Amaranthus is appointed as a common weed associated with crops. The research was designed to survey the Amaranth existence pattern throughout the Fayoum Depression, Egypt, accompanied with a community vegetation analysis. The study was extended to collect and analyze associated soil samples. The obtained results figured out the prevalence of dicot families, herb growth forms, therophyte followed by phanerophyte life forms, the Pantropical monoregional chorotype, and the Mediterranean and Sudano-Zambezian followed by the Irano-Turanian pluri-regional chorotype. Multilevel pattern analysis stated that Gossypium barbadense, Corchorus olitorius, Sorghum bicolor, Sesamum indicum, and Zea mays are indicator species most related to Amaranth occurrence and prediction. NMDS analysis denoting that the Ibshaway, Youssef Al Seddik, Itsa, and Fayoum districts are the most representative districts for Amaranth existence on the basis of edaphic resources. Itsa and Youssef Al Seddik, in addition to Itsa and Fayoum, resemble each other in species composition. High pH and CaCO3 percentages were discriminatory in Ibshaway, Itsa, and Youssef Al Seddik. Ni was the cornerstone for districts partitioning in pruned trees. Finally, Amaranth was flourishing in both comfortable and harsh habitats with cultivated crops and orchards, as well as on the outskirts. Introduction: Sexual minority men (SMM) are at increased risk for psychosocial stressor exposure, substance use, and poor mental health relative to heterosexual men. While the burden of mental health is growing in the United States, among SMM these trends are increasing at a greater rate, driving health disparities. Methods: Framed within a minority stress framework, these analyses examine how stressors explain substance use and poorer mental health over time. Participants were asked questions on stressor exposure (stigma, discrimination, internalized homophobia, perceived stress), mental health (anxiety, depression, PTSD), and substance use (alcohol to intoxication, club drugs, poly club drugs) over 36 months among 528 SMM in NYC. Results: Perceived stress increased frequency of all substance use, whereas discrimination decreased days of club and poly club drug use. Depression severity predicted increased days of club drug and poly club drug use. PTSD severity predicted increased days of club drug and poly club drug use. Conclusion: We are able to expand on the literature with granular substance use data to highlight associations with stressors and mental health. These findings support an increased need for systematic policy solutions and public health interventions to address drivers of substance use disparities among young SMM. Full article

Social trust has been linked to the development and severity of depression, but trust is a complex, multidimensional construct. This study examines the extent to which two distinct forms of trust, general trust and specific trust, predict depressive symptoms. Drawing on longitudinal data from the Directorate of Health’s national surveys conducted in 2007 and 2009, the analysis includes responses from 3211 Icelanders selected through a stratified random sample. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale (DASS), while specific trust captured trust in close relationships, and general trust measured broader perceptions of trustworthiness in others. The two forms of trust together explained 7.6% of the variance in depressive symptoms, with specific trust contributing a substantially greater share. Both remained significant predictors after controlling for prior depression and physical health. These findings highlight the protective role of specific trust and suggest that general trust, an indicator of broader social capital, may also help buffer against depression. The results underscore the relevance of trust as a public health resource and support continued research into social determinants of mental health in Iceland. Full article

Preserving historical porous materials requires careful monitoring of surface humidity to mitigate deterioration processes like salt crystallization, mold growth, and material decay. While microclimate monitoring is a recognized preventive conservation tool, its role in detecting surface-specific moisture risks remains underexplored. This study evaluates the relationship between indoor microclimate fluctuations and surface moisture dynamics across 13 historical sites in Northern Italy (Lake Como, Valtellina, Valposchiavo), encompassing diverse masonry typologies and environmental conditions. High-resolution sensors recorded temperature and relative humidity for a minimum of 13 months, and eight indicators—including dew point depression, critical temperature–humidity zones, and damp effect indices—were analyzed to assess the moisture risks. The results demonstrate that multivariate microclimate data could effectively predict humidity accumulation. The key findings reveal the impact of seasonal ventilation, thermal inertia, and localized air stagnation on moisture distribution, with unheated alpine sites showing the highest condensation risk. The study highlights the need for integrated monitoring approaches, combining dew point analysis, mixing ratio stability, and buffering performance, to enable early risk detection and targeted conservation strategies. These insights bridge the gap between environmental monitoring and surface moisture diagnostics in porous heritage materials. Full article

Background: Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) have been reshaping maternal, fetal, neonatal, and reproductive healthcare by enhancing risk prediction, diagnostic accuracy, and operational efficiency across the perinatal continuum. However, no comprehensive synthesis has yet been published. Objective: To conduct a scoping review of reviews of AI/ML applications spanning reproductive, prenatal, postpartum, neonatal, and early child-development care. Methods: We searched PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and Scopus through April 2025. Two reviewers independently screened records, extracted data, and assessed methodological quality using AMSTAR 2 for systematic reviews, ROBIS for bias assessment, SANRA for narrative reviews, and JBI guidance for scoping reviews. Results: Thirty-nine reviews met our inclusion criteria. In preconception and fertility treatment, convolutional neural network-based platforms can identify viable embryos and key sperm parameters with over 90 percent accuracy, and machine-learning models can personalize follicle-stimulating hormone regimens to boost mature oocyte yield while reducing overall medication use. Digital sexual-health chatbots have enhanced patient education, pre-exposure prophylaxis adherence, and safer sexual behaviors, although data-privacy safeguards and bias mitigation remain priorities. During pregnancy, advanced deep-learning models can segment fetal anatomy on ultrasound images with more than 90 percent overlap compared to expert annotations and can detect anomalies with sensitivity exceeding 93 percent. Predictive biometric tools can estimate gestational age within one week with accuracy and fetal weight within approximately 190 g. In the postpartum period, AI-driven decision-support systems and conversational agents can facilitate early screening for depression and can guide follow-up care. Wearable sensors enable remote monitoring of maternal blood pressure and heart rate to support timely clinical intervention. Within neonatal care, the Heart Rate Observation (HeRO) system has reduced mortality among very low-birth-weight infants by roughly 20 percent, and additional AI models can predict neonatal sepsis, retinopathy of prematurity, and necrotizing enterocolitis with area-under-the-curve values above 0.80. From an operational standpoint, automated ultrasound workflows deliver biometric measurements at about 14 milliseconds per frame, and dynamic scheduling in IVF laboratories lowers staff workload and per-cycle costs. Home-monitoring platforms for pregnant women are associated with 7–11 percent reductions in maternal mortality and preeclampsia incidence. Despite these advances, most evidence derives from retrospective, single-center studies with limited external validation. Low-resource settings, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa, remain under-represented, and few AI solutions are fully embedded in electronic health records. Conclusions: AI holds transformative promise for perinatal care but will require prospective multicenter validation, equity-centered design, robust governance, transparent fairness audits, and seamless electronic health record integration to translate these innovations into routine practice and improve maternal and neonatal outcomes. Background/Objectives: We examined maternal perceptions of infant cries as a mediator between maternal tobacco/cannabis use, psychological distress (depression/anger/hostility) and reported cravings for cigarettes and/or cannabis across two time points. Methods: A total of 96 substance-using mothers (35 tobacco-only and 61 tobacco/cannabis) were recruited in pregnancy. Maternal substance use and psychological distress were measured when their children were school age (5–6 years, T1). At the middle childhood assessment (9–12 years, T2), mothers listened to a standardized set of newborn cries and, afterwards, rated their aversiveness, impact on negative affect, and their tobacco/cannabis cravings. Results: Higher levels of maternal depressive symptoms at T1 were associated with perceptions of cries as being more aversive at T2, which, in turn, were associated with increased cannabis cravings at T2. At T1, higher depressive symptoms predicted increased tobacco cravings and higher maternal anger/hostility predicted increased cannabis cravings. Conclusions: Results highlight the role that infant cries and psychological distress play in cravings among tobacco/cannabis-using mothers. Full article

Background: Musculoskeletal disorders significantly affect healthcare professionals, particularly physiotherapists, due to the physical demands of their work. The link between physical ailments and psychological distress is especially prominent in clinical settings. Objectives: To assess the prevalence of work-related low back pain (LBP), stress, anxiety, and depression among physiotherapists in Saudi Arabia, and to identify associated local risk factors. Methods: A cross-sectional study using convenience sampling included 710 licensed physiotherapists across Saudi Arabia. Participants completed an online survey containing demographic data and the validated measures, including the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) for pain, the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), and the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale-21 (DASS-21) for psychological distress. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, correlation, and regression analyses. Results: Of 710 responses, 697 were valid; 378 physiotherapists reported work-related LBP. The mean pain intensity was 4.6 (SD = 1.6), with 54.2% experiencing moderate to severe disability. Mental health results showed 49.7% had depressive symptoms and 33.9% experienced some level of anxiety. Significant correlations were observed between disability and psychological distress (anxiety: r = 0.382; depression: r = 0.375; stress: r = 0.406; all p < 0.001). Regression analyses indicated psychological distress significantly predicted disability, with R2 values ranging from 0.125 to 0.248, being higher among inpatient physiotherapists. Conclusions: This study reveals a high prevalence of LBP and psychological distress among Saudi physiotherapists, with stress being the strongest predictor of LBP severity. Integrated ergonomic and mental health interventions, including workplace wellness programs and psychological support, are recommended to reduce risks and promote a healthier, more sustainable physiotherapy workforce. Background/Objectives: Improvements in depression and anxiety, associated with moderate increases in physical activity, might induce reductions in emotional eating, especially in women with obesity, where emotion-driven eating is highly problematic. This pilot, field-based study sought to assess whether physical activity increase, itself, primarily predicts improved mood (biochemical theories) or if psychosocial factors associated with cognitive–behavioral treatment are principal correlates (behavioral theories). An aim was to inform improved treatment processes. Methods: Women with obesity participated in 6-month community-based behavioral obesity treatments emphasizing either: (a) standard education in weight-reduction methods (n = 28), (b) eating-related self-regulation methods (n = 24), or (c) self-regulation + relaxation training (n = 24). They completed a series of behavioral and psychological self-reports at baseline and Months 3 and 6. Results: Findings confirmed no significant difference in 3-month increases in physical activity, by group. There were significantly greater overall improvements in depression, emotional eating, self-regulation, and self-efficacy across the two self-regulation-focused groups (ps < 0.02), with anxiety improvement not reaching significance (p = 0.055). Separate significant paths from 3-month changes in depression and anxiety → self-efficacy change → emotional eating change were found. The same significant path was detected emanating from 6-month anxiety change; however, the hypothesized path of 6-month changes in depression → self-regulation → self-efficacy → emotional eating was, rather, significant. Weight reduction was considerably greater in the two self-regulation-based groups (~6% reduction), with simultaneously entered changes in self-regulation and self-efficacy significant predictors of those weight changes. Conclusions: Findings suggested viability in behavioral theory-driven explanations of the physical activity-mood improvement relationship. Future treatment foci on self-regulatory skills development leading to improvements in eating-related self-efficacy, emotional eating, and weight were suggested to extend the findings of this pilot study. Background: Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA) is essential for evaluating older cancer patients, but significant gaps persist in both research and clinical practice. This study aimed (I) to identify the CGA elements that most influence anti-cancer treatment decisions in older patients and (II) to explore the predictive value of CGA components for mortality. Methods: This observational study included older patients with newly diagnosed, histologically confirmed solid or hematological cancers, recruited consecutively from 2003 to 2023. Participants were followed for four years. The data collected included CGA measures of functional (Activities of Daily Living-ADL), cognitive (Mini-Mental State Examination-MMSE), and emotional (Geriatric Depression Scale-GDS) domains. Patients were categorized into frail, vulnerable, or fit groups based on Balducci’s criteria. Statistical analyses included decision tree modeling and Cox regression to identify predictors of mortality. Results: A total of 7022 patients (3222 females) were included, with a mean age of 78.3 ± 12.9 years. The key CGA factors influencing treatment decisions were ADL (first step), cohabitation status (second step), and age (last step). After four years, 21.9% patients had died. Higher GDS scores (OR 1.04, 95% CI 1.01–1.07, p = 0.04) were independently associated with survival in men and living with family members (OR 1.67, 95% CI 1.35–2.07, p < 0.001) in women. Younger patients (<77 years) showed both MMSE and GDS as significant risk factors for mortality. Conclusions: Functional capacity, cohabitation status, and GDS scores are crucial for guiding treatment decisions and predicting mortality in older cancer patients, emphasizing the need for a multidimensional geriatric assessment. Background/Objectives: Given the heterogeneous nature of long COVID, its treatment and management remain challenging. This study aimed to investigate whether poor pre-pandemic sleep quality, its deterioration during the peak of the pandemic, and circadian preference increase the risk of long COVID symptoms. Methods: An online survey was conducted between 9 October and 12 December 2022, with 384 participants who had recovered from COVID-19 at least three months prior to data collection. Participants were categorized based on the presence of at least one long COVID symptom. Logistic regression models assessed associations between sleep-related variables and long COVID symptoms. Results: Participants with long COVID symptoms reported significantly poorer sleep quality, higher perceived stress, greater somatic and cognitive pre-sleep arousal, and elevated levels of post-traumatic stress symptoms, anxiety, depression, and aggression. Fatigue (39.8%) and memory problems (37.0%) were the most common long COVID symptoms. Sleep deterioration during the pandemic peak was reported by 34.6% of respondents. Pre-pandemic poor sleep quality, its deterioration during the pandemic, and poor sleep at the time of the survey were all significantly associated with long COVID. An extreme morning chronotype consistently predicted long COVID symptoms across all models, while an extreme evening chronotype was predictive only when accounting for sleep quality changes during the pandemic. COVID-19 frequency, severity, financial impact, and somatic pre-sleep arousal were significant predictors in all models. Conclusions: Poor sleep quality before the pandemic and its worsening during the pandemic peak are associated with a higher likelihood of long COVID symptoms. These findings underscore the need to monitor sleep health during pandemics and similar global events to help identify at-risk individuals and mitigate long-term health consequences, with important clinical and societal implications. Clinical and animal studies suggest that multiple brain systems are involved in mediating reward-motivated and related emotional behavior including the consumption of commonly used drugs and palatable food, and there is evidence that the repeated ingestion of or exposure to these rewarding substances may in turn stimulate these brain systems to produce an overconsumption of these substances along with co-occurring emotional disturbances. To understand this positive feedback loop, this review focuses on a specific population of hypothalamic peptide neurons expressing melanin-concentrating hormone (MCH), which are positively related to dopamine reward and project to forebrain areas that mediate this behavior. It also examines neurons expressing the peptide hypocretin/orexin (HCRT) that are anatomically and functionally linked to MCH neurons and the molecular systems within these peptide neurons that stimulate their development and ultimately affect behavior. This report first describes evidence in animals that exposure in adults and during adolescence to rewarding substances, such as the drugs alcohol, nicotine and cocaine and palatable fat-rich food, stimulates the expression of MCH as well as HCRT and their intracellular molecular systems. It also increases reward-seeking and emotional behavior, leading to excess consumption and abuse of these substances and neurological conditions, completing this positive feedback loop. Next, this review focuses on the model involving embryonic exposure to these rewarding substances. In addition to revealing a similar positive feedback circuit, this model greatly advances our understanding of the diverse changes that occur in these neuropeptide/molecular systems in the embryo and how they relate, perhaps causally, to the disturbances in behavior early in life that predict a later increased risk of developing substance use disorders. Studies using this model demonstrate in animals that embryonic exposure to these rewarding substances, in addition to stimulating the expression of peptide neurons, increases the intracellular molecular systems in neuroprogenitor cells that promote their development. It also alters the morphology, migration, location and neurochemical profile of the peptide neurons and causes them to develop aberrant neuronal projections to forebrain structures. Moreover, it produces disturbances in behavior at a young age, which are sex-dependent and occur in females more than in males, that can be directly linked to the neuropeptide/molecular changes in the embryo and predict the development of behavioral disorders later in life. These results supporting the close relationship between the brain and behavior are consistent with clinical studies, showing females to be more vulnerable than males to developing substance use disorders with co-occurring emotional conditions and female offspring to respond more adversely than male offspring to prenatal exposure to rewarding substances. It is concluded that the continued consumption of or exposure to rewarding substances at any stage of life can, through such peptide brain systems, significantly increase an individual’s vulnerability to developing neurological disorders such as substance use disorders, anxiety, depression, or cognitive impairments. Background/Objectives: The Rapid Access and Stabilization Program (RASP), launched in Nova Scotia in April 2023, aims to improve timely psychiatric care, reduce reliance on emergency services, and provide early intervention. This study describes the sociodemographic and clinical characteristics of the RASP participants and examines their association with acute service use. Methods: This cross-sectional descriptive study used self-reported surveys and administrative data from 738 RASP participants. Descriptive statistics summarized key sociodemographic and clinical variables. Associations between these characteristics and acute service use (emergency department visits, inpatient admissions, and mobile crisis calls) were examined using chi-square and Fisher’s Exact tests. Bonferroni correction was applied for multiple comparisons. Results: The sample was predominantly female (65.2%) and aged 20–40 years (38.4%). Despite high rates of severe anxiety (53.9%) and depression (36.0%), acute service use was low: emergency department visits (7.2%), mobile crisis calls (1.0%), and inpatient admissions (0.8%). Preliminary analyses showed that education level and housing status were associated with ED visits and inpatient admissions. However, these associations did not remain statistically significant after Bonferroni correction. Conclusions: Although mental health symptom severity was high, acute mental health service use remained low after RASP enrollment, indicating the program’s potential in reducing reliance on crisis services. No participant characteristics were significantly associated with acute service use after adjustment, underscoring the complexity of predicting utilization and the need for robust multivariable models. Continued investment in rapid access programs may be essential to improving timely mental health care and supporting early intervention strategies. Full article

Background: Individuals with intellectual disability face an increased risk of mental health issues compared to the general population. Despite the proven efficacy of physical activity (PA) in improving anxiety and depression in the general population, little is known about this relationship in adults with intellectual disability and the factors that influence it. The purpose of the study was to determine whether a correlation exists between PA and perceived levels of anxiety and depression, and assess gender disparities in PA and mental health. Method: People with intellectual disability were recruited from day centers and sports events. The amount of PA was evaluated through the International Physical Activity Questionnaire. Perceived mental health was assessed through the Zung Self-Rating Anxiety (ZAS) and Depression Scale (ZDS). Results: In total, 99 adults (34 females, aged 33 ± 12) participated in the study. A gender disparity was found in anxiety levels, while depression, PA, and type of sport participation did not differ between males and females. Multiple regression analysis highlights how the depression score was significantly predicted by gender (β = −3.57, p = 0.015), intellectual disability level (β =−3.08, p < 0.008), and PA (β =−0.10, p= 0.001), while anxiety was influenced by gender (β = −4.48, p = 0.003) and intellectual disability level (β = −3.23, p = 0.007). Conclusions: These findings underscore the relevance of physical activity as a factor associated with lower depressive symptoms in adults with intellectual disability, highlighting its potential role in mental health promotion within this population. Objectives: To identify clinical, functional, laboratory, and patient-reported parameters associated with medium-term risk of hospitalization or death among older adults attending a multidisciplinary outpatient clinic, and to assess the predictive performance of these measures for individual risk stratification. Methods: In this cohort study, 350 adults aged ≥65 years were assessed at baseline and followed for an average of 8 months. The primary outcome was a composite of hospitalization or all-cause mortality. Parameters assessed included frailty and comorbidity measures, functional parameters, such as gait speed and grip strength, laboratory biomarkers, and patient-reported measures, such as quality of life (QoL, assessed on a Likert scale) and the presence of depressive symptoms. Predictive performance was evaluated using univariable logistic regression and multivariable modeling. Discriminative ability was assessed via area under the ROC curve (AUC), and selected models were internally validated using repeated k-fold cross-validation. Results: Overall, 40 participants (11.4%) experienced hospitalization or death. Traditional clinical risk indicators, including frailty and comorbidity scores, were significantly associated with the outcome. Patient-reported QoL (AUC = 0.74) and Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) scores (AUC = 0.67) demonstrated useful overall discriminatory ability, with high specificities at optimal cut-offs, suggesting they could act as “red flags” for adverse outcomes. However, the limited sensitivities of individual predictors underscore the need for more comprehensive screening instruments with improved ability to identify at-risk individuals earlier. A multivariable model that incorporated several predictors did not outperform QoL alone (AUC = 0.79), with cross-validation confirming comparable discriminative performance. Conclusions: Patient-reported measures—particularly quality of life and depressive symptoms—are valuable predictors of hospitalization or death and may enhance traditional frailty and comorbidity assessments in outpatient geriatric care. Future work should focus on developing or integrating screening tools with greater sensitivity to optimize early risk detection and guide preventive interventions. Full article

The global youth mental health crisis is increasingly intertwined with climate change, as young people experience heightened climate anxiety and ecological grief. This study examines the relationship between nature connectedness, climate worry, coping strategies, and mental health outcomes among Canadian university students. Drawing on Pihkala’s process model of eco-anxiety, we propose the Developing Ecological Consciousness Model, a three-act framework that traces young people’s journey from climate awareness to meaningful engagement. Using path analysis on two independent samples (N = 1825), we found that nature connectedness predicts increased climate worry, which in turn correlates with higher levels of depression and anxiety. However, meaning-focused coping emerged as a protective factor, mitigating these negative mental health impacts. Problem-focused coping alone was insufficient, highlighting the need for balanced strategies. The study underscores the dual role of nature connectedness—both as a source of climate distress and a foundation for resilience. These findings highlight the need for interventions that foster ecological consciousness while addressing the emotional toll of climate change, offering insights for policymakers, educators, and mental health practitioners working with youth in a warming world.
