Under the growing demand for processing multimodal and cross-lingual information, traditional retrieval systems have encountered substantial limitations when handling heterogeneous inputs such as images, textual layouts, and multilingual language expressions. To address these challenges, a unified retrieval framework has been proposed, which integrates visual features from images, layout-aware optical character recognition (OCR) text, and bilingual semantic representations in Chinese and English. This framework aims to construct a shared semantic embedding space that mitigates semantic discrepancies across modalities and resolves inconsistencies in cross-lingual mappings. The architecture incorporates three main components: a visual encoder, a structure-aware OCR module, and a multilingual Transformer. Furthermore, a joint contrastive learning loss has been introduced to enhance alignment across both modalities and languages. The proposed method has been evaluated on three core tasks: a single-modality retrieval task from image → OCR, a cross-lingual retrieval task between Chinese and English, and a joint multimodal retrieval task involving image, OCR, and language inputs. Experimental results demonstrate that, in the joint multimodal setting, the proposed model achieved a Precision@10 of 0.693, Recall@10 of 0.684, nDCG@10 of 0.672, and F1@10 of 0.685, substantially outperforming established baselines such as CLIP, LayoutLMv3, and UNITER. Ablation studies revealed that removing either the structure-aware OCR module or the cross-lingual alignment mechanism resulted in a decrease in mean reciprocal rank (MRR) to 0.561, thereby confirming the critical role of these components in reinforcing semantic consistency across modalities. This study highlights the powerful potential of large language models in multimodal semantic fusion and retrieval tasks, providing robust solutions for large-scale semantic understanding and application scenarios in multilingual and multimodal contexts. Decarbonization of the Greek economy requires significant investments in clean technologies. This will boost demand for goods and services and will create multiplier effects on output value added and employment, though reliance on imported technologies might increase the trade deficit. This study employs input–output analysis to estimate the direct, indirect, and multiplier effects of green transition investments on Greek output, value added, employment, and imports across five-year intervals from 2025 to 2050. Two scenarios are considered: the former is based on the National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP), driven by a large-scale exploitation of RES and technologies promoting electrification of final demand, while the latter (developed in the context of the CLEVER project) prioritizes energy sufficiency and efficiency interventions to reduce final energy demand. In the NECP scenario, GDP increases by 3–10% (relative to 2023), and employment increases by 4–11%. The CLEVER scenario yields smaller direct effects—owing to lower investment levels—but larger induced impacts, since energy savings boost household disposable income. The consideration of three sub-scenarios adopting different levels of import-substitution rates in key manufacturing sectors exhibits pronounced divergence, indicating that targeted industrial policies can significantly amplify the domestic economic benefits of the green transition. Understanding the migratory strategies of plateau-endemic species is essential for informing effective conservation, especially under climate change. The Black-necked Crane (Grus nigricollis), a high-altitude specialist, has shown notable population growth in recent years. We analysed satellite tracking data from 16 individuals of a western subpopulation in the lake basin region of northern Tibet (2021–2024), focusing on migration patterns, stopover use, and habitat selection. This subpopulation exhibited short-distance (mean: 284.21 km), intra-Tibet migrations with low reliance on stopover sites. Autumn migration was shorter, more direct, higher in altitude, and slower in speed than spring migration. Juveniles used smaller, more fragmented habitats than subadults, and their spatial range expanded over time. Given these patterns, we infer that the short-distance migration strategy may reduce energetic demands and mortality risks while increasing route flexibility—characteristics that may benefit population growth. We refer to this as a low-energy, high-efficiency migration strategy, which we hypothesise could support faster population growth and enhance resilience to environmental change. We recommend prioritizing the conservation of short-distance migration corridors, such as the typical lake basin area in northern Tibet–Yarlung Tsangpo River system, which may help sustain plateau-endemic migratory populations under future climate scenarios. Multiple uncertainties in traffic demand fluctuations and infrastructure vulnerability during seismic events pose significant challenges for the resilience assessment of highway transportation networks (HTNs). While Monte Carlo simulation remains the dominant approach for uncertainty propagation, its high computational cost limits its scalability, particularly in metropolitan-scale networks. This study proposes an EQResNet framework for accelerated post-earthquake resilience assessment of HTNs. The model integrates network topology, interregional traffic demand, and roadway characteristics into a streamlined deep neural network architecture. A comprehensive surrogate modeling strategy is developed to replace conventional traffic simulation modules, including highway status realization, shortest path computation, and traffic flow assignment. Combined with seismic fragility models and recovery functions for regional bridges, the framework captures the dynamic evolution of HTN functionality following seismic events. A multi-dimensional resilience evaluation system is also established to quantify network performance from emergency response and recovery perspectives. A case study on the Sioux Falls network under probabilistic earthquake scenarios demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed method, achieving 95% prediction accuracy while reducing computational time by 90% compared to traditional numerical simulations. The results highlight the framework’s potential as a scalable, efficient, and reliable tool for large-scale post-disaster transportation system analysis. Full article

The growing demand for power and the rising awareness of the need to reduce carbon footprints have led to wider acceptance of photovoltaic (PV)-integrated microgrids. PV-based microgrids have numerous significant advantages over other distributed energy resources; however, creating a dependable protection scheme for the DC microgrid is difficult due to the closely resembling current and voltage profiles of PV array faults and line faults in the DC network. The conventional methods fail to clearly discriminate between them. In this regard, a fault-resilient scheme exploiting the inherent characteristics of Fourier–Bessel Series Expansion and Empirical Wavelet Transform (FBSE-EWT) has been utilized in the present work. In order to enhance the efficacy of the bagging tree-based ensemble classifier, Artificial Gorilla Troop Optimization (AGTO) has been used to tune the hyperparameters. The hybrid protection approach is proposed for accurate fault detection, discrimination between scenarios (source-side fault and line-side fault), and classification of various fault types (pole–pole and pole–ground). The discriminatory attributes derived from voltage and current signals recorded at the DC bus using the hybrid FBSE-EWT have been utilized as an input feature set for the AGTO tuned bagging tree-based ensemble classifier to perform the intended tasks of fault detection and discrimination between source faults (PV array faults) and line faults (DC network). The proposed approach has been found to outperform the decision tree and SVM techniques, demonstrating reliability in terms of discriminating between the PV array faults and the DC line faults and resilience against fluctuations in PV irradiance levels. The cement industry is a significant contributor to global carbon dioxide emissions, primarily due to the energy demands of its production process and its reliance on clinker, a material formed through the high-temperature calcination of limestone. Strategies to reduce emissions include the adoption of low-carbon fuels, the use of carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies, and the integration of supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) to reduce the clinker content. The effectiveness of these measures depends on a complex set of interactions involving technological feasibility, market dynamics, and regulatory frameworks. This study presents a system dynamics model designed to assess how various decarbonization approaches influence long-term emission trends within the cement industry. The model accounts for supply chains, production technologies, market adoption rates, and changes in cement production costs. This study then analyzes a number of scenarios where there is large-scale sustained investment in each of three carbon mitigation strategies. The results show that CCS by itself allows the cement industry to achieve carbon neutrality, but the high capital investment results in a large cost increase for cement. A combined approach using alternative fuels and SCMs was found to achieve a large carbon reduction without a sustained increase in cement prices, highlighting the trade-offs between cost, effectiveness, and system-wide interactions. This study proposes and implements a dual-processor FPGA-ARM architecture to resolve the critical contradiction between massive data volumes and real-time processing demands in UAV-borne hyperspectral imaging. The integrated system incorporates a shortwave infrared hyperspectral camera, IMU, control module, heterogeneous computing core, and SATA SSD storage. Through hardware-level task partitioning—utilizing FPGA for high-speed data buffering and ARM for core computational processing—it achieves a real-time end-to-end acquisition–storage–processing–display pipeline. The compact integrated device exhibits a total weight of merely 6 kg and power consumption of 40 W, suitable for airborne platforms. Experimental validation confirms the system’s capability to store over 200 frames per second (at 640 × 270 resolution, matching the camera’s maximum frame rate), quick-look imaging capability, and demonstrated real-time processing efficacy via relative radio-metric correction tasks (processing 5000 image frames within 1000 ms). This framework provides an effective technical solution to address hyperspectral data processing bottlenecks more efficiently on UAV platforms for dynamic scenario applications. Future work includes actual flight deployment to verify performance in operational environments. Full article

Automated surface defect detection in steel manufacturing is pivotal for ensuring product quality, yet it remains an open challenge owing to the extreme heterogeneity of defect morphologies—ranging from hairline cracks and microscopic pores to elongated scratches and shallow dents. Existing approaches, whether classical vision pipelines or recent deep-learning paradigms, struggle to simultaneously satisfy the stringent demands of industrial scenarios: high accuracy on sub-millimeter flaws, insensitivity to texture-rich backgrounds, and real-time throughput on resource-constrained hardware. Although contemporary detectors have narrowed the gap, they still exhibit pronounced sensitivity–robustness trade-offs, particularly in the presence of scale-varying defects and cluttered surfaces. To address these limitations, we introduce MBY (MBDNet-Attention-YOLO), a lightweight yet powerful framework that synergistically couples the MBDNet backbone with the YOLO detection head. Specifically, the backbone embeds three novel components: (1) HGStem, a hierarchical stem block that enriches low-level representations while suppressing redundant activations; (2) Dynamic Align Fusion (DAF), an adaptive cross-scale fusion mechanism that dynamically re-weights feature contributions according to defect saliency; and (3) C2f-DWR, a depth-wise residual variant that progressively expands receptive fields without incurring prohibitive computational costs. Building upon this enriched feature hierarchy, the neck employs our proposed MultiSEAM module—a cascaded squeeze-and-excitation attention mechanism operating at multiple granularities—to harmonize fine-grained and semantic cues, thereby amplifying weak defect signals against complex textures. Finally, we integrate the Inner-SIoU loss, which refines the geometric alignment between predicted and ground-truth boxes by jointly optimizing center distance, aspect ratio consistency, and IoU overlap, leading to faster convergence and tighter localization. Extensive experiments on two publicly available steel-defect benchmarks—NEU-DET and PVEL-AD—demonstrate the superiority of MBY. Without bells and whistles, our model achieves 85.8% mAP@0.5 on NEU-DET and 75.9% mAP@0.5 on PVEL-AD, surpassing the best-reported results by significant margins while maintaining real-time inference on an NVIDIA Jetson Xavier. Ablation studies corroborate the complementary roles of each component, underscoring MBY’s robustness across defect scales and surface conditions. These results suggest that MBY strikes an appealing balance between accuracy, efficiency, and deployability, offering a pragmatic solution for next-generation industrial quality-control systems. Shandong Province is rich in geothermal resources, mainly stored in sandstone reservoirs. The setting of reasonable well spacing in the early stage of large-scale recharge has not attracted enough attention. The problem of small well spacing in geothermal engineering is particularly prominent in the sandstone thermal reservoir production area represented by Dezhou. Based on the measured data of temperature, flow, and water level, this paper constructs a typical engineering numerical model by using TOUGH2 software. It is found that when the distance between production and recharge wells is 180 m, the amount of production and recharge is 60 m3/h, and the temperature of reinjection is 30 °C, the temperature of the production well will decrease rapidly after 10 years of production and recharge. In order to solve the problem of thermal breakthrough, three optimization schemes are assumed: reducing the reinjection temperature to reduce the amount of re-injection when the amount of heat is the same, reducing the amount of production and injection when the temperature of production and injection is constant, and stopping production after the temperature of the production well decreases. However, the results show that the three schemes cannot solve the problem of thermal breakthrough or meet production demand. Therefore, it is necessary to set reasonable well spacing. Therefore, based on the strata near the Hydrological Homeland in Decheng District, the reasonable spacing of production and recharge wells is achieved by numerical simulation. Under a volumetric flux scenario ranging from 60 to 80 m3/h, the well spacing should exceed 400 m. For a volumetric flux between 80 and 140 m3/h, it is recommended that the well spacing be greater than 600 m. Full article

Urban Agriculture for Post-Disaster Food Security: Quantifying the Contributions of Community Gardens

Wellington, New Zealand, is highly vulnerable to disaster-induced food security crises due to its geography and geological characteristics, which can disrupt transportation and isolate the city following disasters. Urban agriculture (UA) has been proposed as a potential alternative food source for post-disaster scenarios. This study examined the potential of urban agriculture for enhancing post-disaster food security by calculating vegetable self-sufficiency rates. Specifically, it evaluated the capacity of current Wellington’s community gardens to meet post-disaster vegetable demand in terms of both weight and nutrient content. Data collection employed mixed methods with questionnaires, on-site observations and mapping, and collecting high-resolution aerial imagery. Garden yields were estimated using self-reported data supported by literature benchmarks, while cultivated areas were quantified through on-site mapping and aerial imagery analysis. Six post-disaster food demand scenarios were used based on different target populations to develop an understanding of the range of potential produce yields. Weight-based results show that community gardens currently supply only 0.42% of the vegetable demand for residents living within a five-minute walk. This rate increased to 2.07% when specifically targeting only vulnerable populations, and up to 10.41% when focusing on gardeners’ own households. However, at the city-wide level, the current capacity of community gardens to provide enough produce to feed people remained limited. Nutrient-based self-sufficiency was lower than weight-based results; however, nutrient intake is particularly critical for vulnerable populations after disasters, underscoring the greater challenge of ensuring adequate nutrition through current urban food production. Beyond self-sufficiency, this study also addressed the role of UA in promoting food diversity and acceptability, as well as its social and psychological benefits based on the questionnaires and on-site observations. The findings indicate that community gardens contribute meaningfully to post-disaster food security for gardeners and nearby residents, particularly for vulnerable groups with elevated nutritional needs. Despite the current limited capacity of community gardens to provide enough produce to feed residents, findings suggest that Wellington could enhance post-disaster food self-reliance by diversifying UA types and optimizing land-use to increase food production during and after a disaster. Realizing this potential will require strategic interventions, including supportive policies, a conducive social environment, and diversification—such as the including private yards—all aimed at improving food access, availability, and nutritional quality during crises. The primary limitation of this study is the lack of comprehensive data on urban agriculture in Wellington and the wider New Zealand context. Addressing this data gap should be a key focus for future research to enable more robust assessments and evidence-based planning. Full article

To fully accommodate renewable and derivative energy sources in mine energy systems under supply and demand uncertainties, this paper proposes an optimized electricity–heat scheduling method for mining areas that incorporates Power-to-Gas (P2G) technology and Conditional Value-at-Risk (CVaR). First, to address uncertainties on both the supply and demand sides, a P2G unit is introduced, and a Latin hypercube sampling technique based on Cholesky decomposition is employed to generate wind–solar-load sample matrices that capture source–load correlations, which are subsequently used to construct representative scenarios. Second, a stochastic optimization scheduling model is developed for the mine electricity–heat energy system, aiming to minimize the total scheduling cost comprising day-ahead scheduling cost, expected reserve adjustment cost, and CVaR. Finally, a case study on a typical mine electricity–heat energy system is conducted to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method in terms of operational cost reduction and system reliability. The results demonstrate a 1.4% reduction in the total operating cost, achieving a balance between economic efficiency and system security. Full article

The objective of this study is to develop a combined framework of material flow analysis (MFA) and sustainable supply chain planning to improve demand forecasting and inflow management across the plastic bag lifecycle. Method: the research adopts a quantitative method using the XGBoost algorithm for forecasting and is supported by a polymer-based MFA framework that maps material flows from production to end-of-life stages. Result: the findings indicate that while production processes achieve high efficiency with a yield of 89%, more than 60% of plastic bag waste remains unmanaged after use. Moreover, scenario analysis demonstrates that single interventions are insufficient to achieve circularity targets, whereas integrated strategies (e.g., reducing export volumes, enhancing waste collection, and improving recycling performance) are more effective in increasing recycling rates beyond 35%. Additionally, the study reveals that increasing domestic recycling capacity and minimizing dependency on exports can significantly reduce environmental leakage and strengthen local waste management systems. Conclusions: the study’s novelty lies in demonstrating how machine learning and material flow data can be synergized to inform circular supply chain decisions and regulatory planning. Full article

Electricity distribution systems face increasing challenges due to demand growth, regulatory requirements, and the integration of distributed generation. In this context, distribution companies must make strategic and well-supported investment decisions, particularly in asset reinforcement actions such as reconductoring. This paper presents a multi-stage methodology to optimize reconductoring investments under load forecasting uncertainties. The approach combines a decomposition strategy with Monte Carlo simulation to capture demand variability. By discretizing a lognormal probability density function and selecting the largest loads in the network, the methodology balances computational feasibility with modeling accuracy. The optimization model employs exhaustive search techniques independently for each network branch, ensuring precise and consistent investment decisions. Tests conducted on the IEEE 123-bus feeder consider both operational and regulatory constraints from the Brazilian context. Results show that uncertainty-aware planning leads to a narrow investment range—between USD 55,108 and USD 66,504—highlighting the necessity of reconductoring regardless of demand scenarios. A comparative analysis of representative cases reveals consistent interventions, changes in conductor selection, and schedule adjustments based on load conditions. The proposed methodology enables flexible, cost-effective, and regulation-compliant investment planning, offering valuable insights for utilities seeking to enhance network reliability and performance while managing demand uncertainties. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have rapidly grown into different essential applications, including surveillance, disaster response, agriculture, and urban monitoring. However, for UAVS to steer safely and autonomously, the ability to detect obstacles and nearby aircraft remains crucial, especially under hard environmental conditions. This study comprehensively analyzes the recent landscape of obstacle and aircraft detection techniques tailored for UAVs acting in difficult scenarios such as fog, rain, smoke, low light, motion blur, and disorderly environments. It starts with a detailed discussion of key detection challenges and continues with an evaluation of different sensor types, from RGB and infrared cameras to LiDAR, radar, sonar, and event-based vision sensors. Both classical computer vision methods and deep learning-based detection techniques are examined in particular, highlighting their performance strengths and limitations under degraded sensing conditions. The paper additionally offers an overview of suitable UAV-specific datasets and the evaluation metrics generally used to evaluate detection systems. Finally, the paper examines open problems and coming research directions, emphasising the demand for lightweight, adaptive, and weather-resilient detection systems appropriate for real-time onboard processing. This study aims to guide students and engineers towards developing stronger and intelligent detection systems for next-generation UAV operations. Full article

The exponential growth of autonomous systems demands robust security mechanisms that can operate within the extreme constraints of real-time embedded environments. This paper introduces SMART DShot, a groundbreaking machine learning-enhanced framework that transforms the security landscape of unmanned aerial vehicle motor control systems through seamless integration of adaptive timing correction and real-time anomaly detection within Digital Shot (DShot) communication protocols. Our approach addresses critical vulnerabilities in Electronic Speed Controller (ESC) interfaces by deploying four synergistic algorithms—Kalman Filter Timing Correction (KFTC), Recursive Least Squares Timing Correction (RLSTC), Fuzzy Logic Timing Correction (FLTC), and Hybrid Adaptive Timing Correction (HATC)—each optimized for specific error characteristics and attack scenarios. Through comprehensive evaluation encompassing 32,000 Monte Carlo test iterations (500 per scenario × 16 scenarios × 4 algorithms) across 16 distinct operational scenarios and PolarFire SoC Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) implementation, we demonstrate exceptional performance with 88.3% attack detection rate, only 2.3% false positive incidence, and substantial vulnerability mitigation reducing Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) severity from High (7.3) to Low (3.1). Hardware validation on PolarFire SoC confirms practical viability with minimal resource overhead (2.16% Look-Up Table utilization, 16.57 mW per channel) and deterministic sub-10 microsecond execution latency. The Hybrid Adaptive Timing Correction algorithm achieves 31.01% success rate (95% CI: [30.2%, 31.8%]), representing a 26.5% improvement over baseline approaches through intelligent meta-learning-based algorithm selection. Statistical validation using Analysis of Variance confirms significant performance differences (F(3,1996) = 30.30, p < 0.001) with large effect sizes (Cohen’s d up to 4.57), where 64.6% of algorithm comparisons showed large practical significance. SMART DShot establishes a paradigmatic shift from reactive to proactive embedded security, demonstrating that sophisticated artificial intelligence can operate effectively within microsecond-scale real-time constraints while providing comprehensive protection against timing manipulation, de-synchronization, burst interference, replay attacks, coordinated multi-channel attacks, and firmware-level compromises. This work provides essential foundations for trustworthy autonomous systems across critical domains including aerospace, automotive, industrial automation, and cyber–physical infrastructure. These results conclusively demonstrate that ML-enhanced motor control systems can achieve both superior security (88.3% attack detection rate with 2.3% false positives) and operational performance (31.01% timing correction success rate, 26.5% improvement over baseline) simultaneously, establishing SMART DShot as a practical, deployable solution for next-generation autonomous systems.
