A rotating imperfect ring resonator of the gyroscope is modeled by a rotating thin ring with evenly distributed point masses. The free response of the rotating ring structure at constant speed is investigated, including the steady elastic deformation and wave response. The dynamic equations are formulated by using Hamilton’s principle in the ground-fixed coordinates. The coordinate transformation is applied to facilitate the solution of the steady deformation, and the displacements and tangential tension for the deformation are calculated by the perturbation method. Employing Galerkin’s method, the governing equation of the free vibration is casted in matrix differential operator form after the separation of the real and imaginary parts with the inextensional assumption. The natural frequencies are calculated through the eigenvalue analysis, and the numerical results are obtained. The effects of the point masses on the natural frequencies of the forward and backward traveling wave curves of different orders are discussed, especially on the measurement accuracy of gyroscopes for different cases. In the ground-fixed coordinates, the frequency splitting results in a crosspoint of the natural frequencies of the forward and backward traveling waves. The finite element method is applied to demonstrate the validity and accuracy of the model. Full article

To address the unclear coupling mechanism between thermal elastohydrodynamic lubrication (TEHL) and dynamic behaviors in planetary gear systems, a novel tribo-dynamic model for dual-star planetary gears considering TEHL effects is proposed. In this model, a TEHL surrogate model is first established to determine the oil film thickness and sliding friction force along the tooth meshing line. Subsequently, the dynamic model of the dual-star planetary gear transmission system is developed through coordinate transformations of the dual-star gear train. Finally, by integrating lubrication effects into both time-varying mesh stiffness and time-varying backlash, a tribo-dynamic model for the dual-star planetary gear transmission system is established. The study reveals that the lubricant film thickness is positively correlated with relative sliding velocity but negatively correlated with unit line load. Under high-speed conditions, a thickened oil film induces premature meshing contact, leading to meshing impacts. In contrast, under high-torque conditions, tooth deformation dominates meshing force fluctuations while lubrication influence diminishes. By establishing a test bench for the planetary gear transmission system, the obtained simulation conclusions are verified. This research provides theoretical and experimental support for the design of high-reliability planetary gear systems. Full article

Wave deformation and sediment transport nearest the shoreside are among the main reasons for sand erosion and beach profile changes. In particular, identifying the areas of incident-wave breaking and longshore current generation parallel to the shoreline is important for understanding the morphological changes of coastal beaches. In this study, a two-phase incompressible flow model along with a sandy sloping topography was employed to investigate the wave deformation and longshore current generation areas in a circular wave basin model. The finite volume method (FVM) was implemented to discretize the governing equations in cylindrical coordinates, the volume-of-fluid method (VOF) was adopted to differentiate the air–water interfaces in the control cells, and the zonal embedded grid technique was employed for grid generation in the cylindrical computational domain. The water surface elevations and velocity profiles were measured in different wave conditions, and the measurements showed that the maximum water levels per wave were high and varied between cases, as well as between cross-sections in a single case. Additionally, the mean water levels were lower in the adjacent positions of the approximated wave-breaking zones. The wave-breaking positions varied between cross-sections in a single case, with the incident-wave height, mean water level, and wave-breaking position measurements indicating the influence of downstream flow variation in each cross-section on the sloping topography. The cross-shore velocity profiles became relatively stable over time, while the longshore velocity profiles predominantly moved in the alongshore direction, with smaller fluctuations, particularly during the same time period and in measurement positions near the wave-breaking zone. The computed velocity profiles also varied between cross-sections, and for the velocity profiles along the cross-shore and longshore directions nearest the wave-breaking areas where the downstream flow had minimal influence, it was presumed that there was longshore-current generation in the sloping topography nearest the shoreside. The computed results were compared with the experimental results and we observed similar characteristics for wave profiles in the same wave period case in both models. In the future, further investigations can be conducted using the presented circular wave basin model to investigate the oblique wave deformation and longshore current generation in different sloping and wave conditions. As a bridge for human–machine interaction, the performance improvement of sensors relies on the in-depth understanding of ion transport mechanisms. This study focuses on the surface effect of resistive gel sensors and designs a polyacrylic acid/ferric ion hydrogel (PAA/Fe3+) gas flow sensor. Prepared by one-pot polymerization, PAA/Fe3+ forms a three-dimensional network through the entanglement of crosslinked and uncrosslinked PAA chains, where the coordination between Fe3+ and carboxyl groups endows the material with excellent mechanical properties (tensile strength of 80 kPa and elongation at break of 1100%). Experiments show that when a gas flow acts on the hydrogel surface, changes in surface humidity alter the density of the network structure, thereby regulating ion migration rates: the network loosens to promote ion transport during water absorption, while it tightens to hinder transport during water loss. This mechanism enables the sensor to exhibit significant resistance responses (ΔR/R0 up to 0.55) to gentle breezes (0–13 m/s), with a response time of approximately 166 ms and a sensitivity 40 times higher than that of bulk deformation. The surface ion transport model proposed in this study provides a new strategy for ultrasensitive gas flow sensing, showing potential application values in intelligent robotics, electronic skin, and other fields. During the process of flexible aerial refueling, the flexible structure of the hose drogue assembly is affected by internal and external interference, such as docking maneuvering, deformation of the hose, attitude changes, and body vibrations, causing the hose to swing and the whipping phenomenon, which greatly limits the success rate and safety of aerial refueling operations. Based on a 2.4 m transonic wind tunnel, high-speed wind tunnel test technology of a flexible aerial refueling hose–drogue system was established to carry out experimental research on the coupling characteristics of aerodynamics and multi-body dynamics. Based on the aid of Videogrammetry Model Deformation (VMD), high-speed photography, dynamic balance, and other wind tunnel test technologies, the dynamic characteristics of the hose–drogue system in a high-speed airflow and during the approach of the receiver are obtained. Adopting flexible multi-body dynamics, a dynamic system of the tanker, hose, drogue, and receiver is modeled. The cable/beam model is based on an arbitrary Lagrange–Euler method, and the absolute node coordinate method is used to describe the deformation, movement, and length variation in the hose during both winding and unwinding. The aerodynamic forces of the tanker, receiver, hose, and drogue are modeled, reflecting the coupling influence of movement of the tanker and receiver, the deformation of the hose and drogue, and the aerodynamic forces on each other. The tests show that during the approach of the receiver (distance from 1000 mm to 20 mm), the sinking amount of the drogue increases by 31 mm; due to the offset of the receiver probe, the drogue moves sideways from the symmetric plane of the receiver. Meanwhile, the oscillation magnitude of the drogue increases (from 33 to 48 and from 48 to 80 in spanwise and longitudinal directions, respectively). The simulation results show that the shear force induced by the oscillation of the hose and the propagation velocity of both the longitudinal and shear waves are affected by the hose stiffness and Mach number. The results presented in this work can be of great reference to further increase the safety of aerial refueling. Full article

In recent years, there has been an increasing transition from 1D point-based to 3D point-cloud-based data acquisition for monitoring applications and deformation analysis tasks. Previously, many studies relied on point-to-point measurements using total stations to assess structural deformation. However, the introduction of terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) has commenced a new era in data capture with a high level of efficiency and flexibility for data collection and post processing. Thus, a robust understanding of both data acquisition and processing techniques is required to guarantee high-quality deliverables to geometrically separate the measurement uncertainty and movements. TLS is highly demanding in capturing detailed 3D point coordinates of a scene within either short- or long-range scanning. Although various studies have examined scanner misalignments under controlled conditions within the short range of observation (scanner calibration), there remains a knowledge gap in understanding and characterizing errors related to long-range scanning (scanning calibration). Furthermore, limited information on manufacturer-oriented calibration tests highlights the motivation for designing a user-oriented calibration test. This research focused on investigating four primary sources of error in the generic error model of TLS. These were categorized into four geometries: instrumental imperfections related to the scanner itself, atmospheric effects that impact the laser beam, scanning geometry concerning the setup and varying incidence angles during scanning, and object and surface characteristics affecting the overall data accuracy. This study presents previous findings of TLS calibration relevant to the four error sources and mitigation strategies and identified current challenges that can be implemented as potential research directions. Planar heaters are designed to deliver uniform heat across broad surfaces and serve as critical components in applications requiring energy efficiency, safety, and mechanical flexibility, such as wearable electronics and smart textiles. However, conventional metal-based heaters are limited by poor adaptability to curved or complex surfaces, low mechanical compliance, and susceptibility to oxidation-induced degradation. To overcome these challenges, we applied a protein-assisted electroless copper (Cu) plating strategy to electrospun poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) nanofiber substrates to fabricate flexible, conductive planar heating membranes. For interfacial functionalization, a protein-based engineering approach using bovine serum albumin (BSA) was employed to facilitate palladium ion coordination and seed formation. The resulting membrane exhibited a dense, continuous Cu coating, low sheet resistance, excellent durability under mechanical deformation, and stable heating performance at low voltages. These results demonstrate that the BSA-assisted strategy can be effectively extended to complex three-dimensional fibrous membranes, supporting its scalability and practical potential for next-generation conformal and wearable planar heaters. Thermal control in rolling mills motors is gaining importance as more and more hard-to-deform steel grades are rolled. The capabilities of diagnostics monitoring also expand as digital IIoT-based technologies are adopted. Electrical drives in modern rolling mills are based on synchronous motors with frequency regulation. Such motors are expensive, while their reliability impacts the metallurgical plant output. Hence, developing the on-line temperature monitoring systems for such motors is extremely urgent. This paper presents a solution applying to synchronous motors of the upper and lower rolls in the horizontal roll stand of plate mill 5000. The installed capacity of each motor is 12 MW. According to the digitalization tendency, on-line monitoring systems should be based on digital shadows (coordinate observers) that are similar to digital twins, widely introduced at metallurgical plants. Modern reliability requirements set the continuous temperature monitoring for stator and rotor windings and iron core. This article is the first to describe a method for calculating thermal loads based on the data sets created during rolling. The authors have developed a thermal state observer based on four-mass model of motor heating built using the Simscape Thermal Models library domains that is part of the MATLAB Simulink. Virtual adjustment of the observer and of the thermal model was performed using hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation. The authors have validated the results by comparing the observer’s values with the actual values measured at control points. The discrete masses heating was studied during the rolling cycle. The stator and rotor winding temperature was analysed at different periods. The authors have concluded that the motors of the upper and lower rolls are in a satisfactory condition. The results of the study conducted generally develop the idea of using object-oriented digital shadows for the industrial electrical equipment. The authors have introduced technologies that improve the reliability of the rolling mills electrical drives which accounts for the innovative development in metallurgy. The authors have also provided recommendations on expanded industrial applications of the research results. Full article

Homogenization researches for corrugated cardboard are predominantly based on plate theories assuming constant thickness, such as the Reissner–Mindlin plate. However, corrugated cardboard is prone to significant deformation in the thickness direction. To address this limitation, the present work proposes an improved plate element designed by expanding the deflection function to the quadratic term of the thickness coordinate, enabling a linearly varied transverse normal strain. Furthermore, an extension of the established homogenization method is developed to derive the constitutive matrix. The element is implemented via the Abaqus user subroutine UEL. Validation demonstrates that the proposed element effectively characterizes a linearly varied transverse normal strain and stress. Simulation results from the homogenized model applying the proposed element and extended homogenization method are compared with those from detailed models. The comparisons confirm the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed approach. Full article

Sign language is a complex and dynamic visual language that requires the coordinated movement of various body parts, such as the hands, arms, and limbs—making it an ideal application domain for sensor networks to capture and interpret human gestures accurately. To address the intricate task of precise and expedient SLR from raw videos, this study introduces a novel deep learning approach by devising a multimodal framework for SLR. Specifically, feature extraction models are built based on two modalities: skeleton and RGB images. In this paper, we firstly propose a Multi-Stream Spatio-Temporal Graph Convolutional Network (MSGCN) that relies on three modules: a decoupling graph convolutional network, a self-emphasizing temporal convolutional network, and a spatio-temporal joint attention module. These modules are combined to capture the spatio-temporal information in multi-stream skeleton features. Secondly, we propose a 3D ResNet model based on deformable convolution (D-ResNet) to model complex spatial and temporal sequences in the original raw images. Finally, a gating mechanism-based Multi-Stream Fusion Module (MFM) is employed to merge the results of the two modalities. Extensive experiments are conducted on the public datasets AUTSL and WLASL, achieving competitive results compared to state-of-the-art systems. Full article

This work systematically addresses the dual challenges of non-inertial dynamic coupling and kinematic constraint redundancy encountered in dynamic modeling of serial–parallel–serial hybrid robotic mechanisms, and proposes an improved Newton–Euler modeling method with constraint compensation. Taking the Skiing Simulation Platform with 6-DOF as the research mechanism, the inverse kinematic model of the closed-chain mechanism is established through GF set theory, with explicit analytical expressions derived for the motion parameters of limb mass centers. Introducing a principal inertial coordinate system into the dynamics equations, a recursive algorithm incorporating force/moment coupling terms is developed. Numerical simulations reveal a 9.25% periodic deviation in joint moments using conventional methods. Through analysis of the mechanism’s intrinsic properties, it is identified that the lack of angular momentum conservation constraints on the end-effector in non-inertial frames leads to system controllability degradation. Accordingly, a constraint compensation strategy is proposed: establishing linearly independent differential algebraic equations supplemented with momentum/angular momentum balance equations for the end platform. Co-Simulation results demonstrate that the optimized model reduces the maximum relative error of actuator joint moments to 0.98%, and maintains numerical stability across the entire configuration space. The constraint compensation framework provides a universal solution for dynamics modeling of complex closed-chain mechanisms, validated through applications in flight simulators and automotive driving simulators. The quality of machined marine propellers plays a critical role in underwater propulsion performance. Precision casting is the predominant manufacturing technique; however, deformation of wax models and rough blanks during manufacturing frequently cause deviations in the dimensions of final products and, thus, affect propellers’ performance and service life. Current inspection methods primarily involve using coordinate measuring machines and sampling. This approach is time-consuming, has high labor costs, and cannot monitor manufacturing quality in real-time. This study developed a real-time online automated measurement system containing a high-resolution CITIZEN displacement sensor, a four-degree-of-freedom measurement platform, and programmable logic controller-based motion control technology to enable rapid, automated measurement of blade deformation across the wax model, rough blank, and final product processing stages. The measurement data are transmitted in real time to a cloud database. Tests conducted on a standardized platform and real propeller blades confirmed that the system consistently achieved measurement accuracy to the second decimal place under the continual measurement mode. The system also demonstrated excellent repeatability and stability. Furthermore, the continuous measurement mode outperformed the single-point measurement mode. Overall, the developed system effectively reduces labor requirements, shortens measurement times, and enables real-time monitoring of process variation. These capabilities underscore its strong potential for application in the smart manufacturing and quality control of marine propellers. Full article

This paper investigates flexible multibody dynamic modeling and a staged deployment strategy for large-scale spinning tethered satellite systems, targeting deployment instability, inefficiencies, and tension-induced fracture risks. A nonlinear flexible multibody model is constructed using the absolute nodal coordinate formulation within an arbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian framework, enabling accurate large-deformation modeling of the tether with geometric nonlinearity. This model surpasses traditional massless/rigid rod models by integrating tether mass distribution, flexible dynamics, and satellite attitude dynamics. A two-stage deployment strategy is proposed based on tether safe tension thresholds. Stage 1 optimizes deployment velocity to eliminate libration angles, ensuring stability while maintaining deployment efficiency. Stage 2 employs dynamic angular velocity tracking and torque compensation to reduce tether tension, prioritizing deployment safety. Numerical simulations validate the model’s accuracy and the strategy’s effectiveness, showing significant tension reduction compared to the single-stage strategy and suppressing libration angle oscillations within ±0.5°. The impact of space environmental forces on deployment stability across different orientations is analyzed, highlighting the necessity of force compensation for parallel-to-ground configurations. This research integrates dynamics and control, providing a practical solution for safe and efficient deployment of the spinning tethered satellite system. Full article

This study presents the synthesis, physicochemical characterization, and biological evaluation of a novel ternary nickel(II) complex with isoleucine and 1,10-phenanthroline ligands, [Ni(Phen)(Ile)2]∙6H2O, designed as a potential antitumor agent. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction revealed a monoclinic structure (C2-space group) with an octahedral Ni(II) coordination involving Phen and Ile ligands. A Hirshfeld surface analysis highlighted intermolecular interactions stabilizing the crystal lattice, with hydrogen bonds (H···H and O···H/H···O) dominating (99.1% of contacts). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations, including solvation effects (in water and methanol), demonstrated strong agreement with the experimental geometric parameters and revealed higher affinity to the water solvent. The electronic properties of the complex, such as HOMO−LUMO gaps (3.20–4.26 eV) and electrophilicity (4.54–5.88 eV), indicated a charge-transfer potential suitable for biological applications through interactions with biomolecules. Raman and infrared spectroscopic studies showed vibrational modes associated with Ni–N/O bonds and ligand-specific deformations, with solvation-induced shifts observed. A study using ultraviolet–visible–near-infrared absorption spectroscopy demonstrated that the complex remains stable in solution. In vitro cytotoxicity assays against MCF-7 (breast adenocarcinoma) and HCT-116 (colorectal carcinoma) cells showed dose-dependent activity, achieving 47.6% and 65.3% viability reduction at 100 μM (48 h), respectively, with lower toxicity to non-tumor lung fibroblasts (GM07492A, 39.8%). Supporting the experimental data, we performed computational modeling to examine the pharmacokinetic profile, with particular focus on the absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion properties and drug-likeness potential. The mechanisms of in-service damage caused to the cylinder units of internal combustion engines (ICE) during their operation are analyzed. Long-term operation under harsh conditions, failure to comply with operating conditions, and breach of design and technology standards were found to be the major reasons for the initiation and propagation of in-service defects. The life of ICE cylinder liners is proposed to be extended by forming regular microreliefs. This represents a promising surface engineering strategy. Axial lines of the regular microrelief’s grooves were considered using analytical dependencies, which helped determine their coordinates and those of their equidistant. The authors simulated the pattern according to which the groove axes of type II regular microrelief could be aligned on the inner surface of the cylinder liner. To this end, a tool with three deforming elements was used. Technical means have been developed to implement this technology on the working surfaces of the liner–piston group’s mating parts.
