With rising global temperatures and increasing sustainability demands, the need for advanced pavement solutions has never been greater. This study breaks new ground by integrating phase change materials (PCMs), including paraffin-based wax (Rubitherm RT55), hydrated salt (Climator Salt S10), and fatty acid (lauric acid), as binder modifiers within warm mix asphalt (WMA) mixtures. Moving beyond the traditional focus on binder-only modifications, this research utilizes recycled cigarette filters (CFs) as a dual-purpose fiber additive, directly reinforcing the asphalt mixture while simultaneously transforming a major urban waste stream into valuable infrastructure. The performance of the developed WMA mixture has been evaluated in terms of stiffness behavior using an Indirect Tensile Strength Modulus (ITSM) test, permanent deformation using a static creep strain test, and rutting resistance using the Hamburg wheel-track test. Laboratory tests demonstrated that the incorporation of PCMs and recycled CFs into WMA mixtures led to remarkable improvements in stiffness, deformation resistance, and rutting performance. Modified mixes consistently outperformed the control, achieving up to 15% higher stiffness after 7 days of curing, 36% lower creep strain after 4000 s, and 64% reduction in rut depth at 20,000 passes. Cost–benefit analysis and service life prediction show that, despite costing USD 0.71 more per square meter with 5 cm thickness, the modified WMA mixture delivers much greater durability and rutting resistance, extending service life to 19–29 years compared to 10–15 years for the control. This highlights the value of these modifications for durable, sustainable pavements. Full article

The incorporation of waste polyethylene terephthalate (PET) as a modifier for asphalt presents a promising approach to addressing the environmental pollution associated with waste plastics while simultaneously extending the service life of road surfaces. This study investigates the fundamental physical properties and rheological properties of asphalt modified with waste PET at both high and low temperatures. Utilizing the theory of fractional derivatives, performance evaluation indicators, such as the deformation factor and viscoelasticity factor, have been developed for the assessment of waste PET-modified asphalt. The underlying mechanism of this modification was examined through scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The results indicate that the addition of waste PET enhances the high-temperature stability of the base asphalt but reduces its resistance to cracking at low temperatures. The fractional derivative model effectively describes the dynamic shear rheological properties of waste PET-modified asphalt, achieving a maximum correlation coefficient of 0.99991. Considering the performance of modified asphalt at both high and low temperatures, the optimal concentration of waste PET was determined to be 6%. At this concentration, the minimum creep stiffness of the PET-modified asphalt was approximately 155 MPa at −6 °C. Additionally, the rutting factor of the waste PET-modified asphalt achieved a maximum value of 527.12 KPa at 52 °C. The interaction between waste PET and base asphalt was primarily physical, with mutual adsorption leading to the formation of a spatial network structure that enhanced the deformation resistance of the asphalt. This study provides a theoretical foundation and technical support for the engineering application of waste PET as a modifier in asphalt. Full article

This study proposes a coupled constitutive model that captures the anisotropic failure characteristics and damage evolution of nickel-based single-crystal (SX) superalloys under various temperature conditions. The model accounts for both creep rate and material damage evolution, enabling accurate prediction of the typical three-stage creep curves, macroscopic fracture morphologies, and microstructural features under uniaxial tensile creep for specimens with different crystallographic orientations. Creep behavior of SX superalloys was simulated under multiple orientations and various temperature-stress conditions using the proposed model. The resulting creep curves aligned well with experimental observations, thereby validating the model’s feasibility and accuracy. Furthermore, a finite element model of cylindrical specimens was established, and simulations of the macroscopic fracture morphology were performed using a user-defined material subroutine. By integrating the rafting theory governed by interfacial energy density, the model successfully predicts the rafting morphology of the microstructure at the fracture surface for different crystallographic orientations. The proposed model maintains low programming complexity and computational cost while effectively predicting the creep life and deformation behavior of anisotropic materials. The model accurately captures the three-stage creep deformation behavior of SX specimens and provides reliable predictions of stress fields and microstructural changes at critical cross-sections. The model demonstrates high accuracy in life prediction, with all predicted results falling within a ±1.5× error band and an average error of 14.6%. Full article

In the present work, we design a laminated composite composed of molybdenum–rhenium alloy and silicon carbide ceramics for use in space reactors as a candidate structural material with neutron spectral shift properties. The influence of the internal microstructure on the mechanical properties is investigated by finite element simulation based on scale separation. The results of the study showed that the incorporation of gradient transition layers between the metallic and ceramic phases effectively mitigates thermally induced local stresses arising from mismatches in coefficients of thermal expansion. By optimizing the composition of the gradient transition layers, the stress distribution within the composite under operating conditions has been adjusted. As a result, the stress experienced by the alloy phase is significantly reduced, potentially extending the high-temperature creep rupture life. Full article

The role of pre-hoop expansion deformation on high-temperature mechanical properties of zirconium at 400 °C was investigated. The results showed that with the increase in the pre-strain, the yield strength and ultimate strength increased while the elongation decreased, all in a linear way. The creep life had a significant decrease as the creep stress exceeded 276 MPa. The fatigue–creep results indicated that as the stress ratio was less than 0.7, the deformation process was dominated by fatigue (the fatigue–creep life first increased and then decreased), while as the stress ratio was higher than 0.7, the deformation process was dominated by creep (the fatigue–creep life decreased monotonically). The dwell time had a negative effect on the fatigue–creep life. The stress field simulation results indicated that there existed a compressive stress zone, a stress transition zone, and a tensile stress zone around the pre-hoop expansion deformation zone. The compressive stress was beneficial while the tensile stress was harmful for the high-temperature mechanical properties of the zirconium plate. Full article

This study evaluated the effects of early-life creep feeding with a high-protein, high-energy diet on growth performance, ruminal fermentation, and gut microbiota in Hanwoo calves (n = 10). Calves were assigned to control or treatment groups from birth to 6 months of age. No significant differences were observed in body weight, average daily gain (ADG), or feed conversion ratio (FCR), but ADG and dry matter intake (DMI) tended to be higher in the treatment group. Ruminal pH, NH3-N, and volatile fatty acid (VFA) concentrations showed no significant differences. Fecal VFA profiles exhibited numerical trends suggesting higher propionate at 3 months and lower acetate, butyrate, and total VFA at 6 months in the treatment group, potentially reflecting altered substrate availability or absorption capacity, though these mechanisms were not directly measured. Microbiota analysis indicated stable ruminal alpha diversity, with numerical increases in fecal Bacteroidetes and genera such as Fournierella and Flavonifractor in the treatment group. These results suggest that early creep feeding with high-nutrition diets can support intake and promote potential shifts in hindgut microbiota composition without compromising overall microbial stability. Further research with larger sample sizes is needed to confirm these trends and assess long-term impacts on calf health and productivity. Full article

This article presents the results of studies of the degradation of the structure and mechanical properties of the core materials BN-350 fast neutron and research WWR-K reactors required to justify the service life extension of early-generation power and research reactors. Extending the service life of nuclear reactors is a modern problem, since most operating reactors are early-generation reactors that have exhausted their design lifespan. The possibility of extending the service life is largely determined by the condition of the structural materials of the nuclear facility, i.e., their residual resources must ensure safe operation of the reactor. For the SAV-1 alloy, the structural material of the WWR-K reactor, studies were conducted on witness samples which were in the active zone during its operation for 56 years. It was found that yield strength and tensile strength of the irradiated SAV-1 alloy decreased by 24–48%, and relative elongation decreased by ~2% compared to the unirradiated alloy. Inside the grains and along their boundaries, there were particles of secondary phases enriched with silicon, which is typical for aged aluminum alloys. For irradiated structural steels of power reactors, studied at 350–450 C, hardening and a damping nature of creep were revealed, caused by dispersion hardening and the Hall–Petch effect. Full article

The cast nickel-based superalloy K417G exhibits excellent high-temperature strength, but non-equilibrium solidification during casting can cause defects such as irreparable interdendritic microporosity, which significantly degrades its fatigue and creep properties. This study uses hot isostatic pressing (HIP) to eliminate internal flaws such as porosity in the K417G alloy, aiming to improve its mechanical properties. We investigated the microstructure and mechanical properties of K417G under two thermal conditions: solution heat treatment (SHT) and hot isostatic pressing (HIP). The results indicate that HIP significantly reduces microporosity. Compared to SHT, HIP improves the mechanical performance of K417G. The creep fracture mechanism shifts from intergranular brittle fracture (SHT) to ductile fracture (HIP). Consequently, HIP increases the alloy′s creep life approximately threefold and raises its fatigue limit by about 20 MPa. This improvement is attributed to pore density reduction, which decreases stress concentration zones and homogenizes the microstructure, thereby impeding fatigue crack nucleation and extending the crack incubation period. This research evaluates the rheological and mechanical properties of polymer- and nanomaterials-modified bitumen by incorporating nanosilica (NSA), nanoclay (NCY), and Acrylonitrile Styrene Acrylate (ASA) at 5% by weight of the bitumen. The samples were prepared at 165 °C for one hour to obtain homogeneous blends. All samples were subjected to short- and long-term aging to simulate the effects of different operating conditions. The research conducted a series of tests, including consistency, frequency sweep, and multiple creep stress and recovery (MSCR) using the dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) and bending beam rheometer (BBR). The results showed that all modified bitumen outperformed the neat bitumen. The frequency sweep showed a higher complex modulus (G*) and lower phase angle (δ), indicating enhanced viscoelastic properties and, thus, higher resistance to permanent deformation. The BBR test revealed that the bitumen modified with NCY5% has a creep stiffness of 47.13 MPa, a 51.5% improvement compared to the neat bitumen, while the NSA5% has the highest m-value, a 28.5% enhancement compared with the neat bitumen. The MSCR showed that the modified blends have better recovery properties and, therefore, better resistance to permanent deformation under repeated loadings. The aging index demonstrated that the modified bitumen is less vulnerable to aging and maintains their good flexibility and resistance to permanent deformations. Finally, these results showed that adding 5% polymer and nanomaterials improved the bitumen’s’ performance before and after aging by reducing permanent deformation and enhancing crack resistance at low temperatures, thus extending the pavement service life and making them an effective alternative for improving pavement performance in various climatic conditions and under high traffic loads. Testing and the estimation methods for predicting the life of crack initiation and crack growth for P92 steel using a circular sharp notched round bar specimen (CNS) under strain-controlled creep and fatigue conditions have been reported previously. A unique estimation method for the cycle-sequential characteristics of tensile and compressive peak stresses is proposed; specifically, the nominal stress range σnet=(σmaxσmin)net and the measurement of crack length using the direct current electric potential drop (DCPD) method were adopted. This method was effective in specifying the failure life and crack initiation life by verifying the crack growth length. However, to show the universality of these results, it is important to compare the experimental results obtained under strain-controlled creep and fatigue conditions with those obtained under stress-controlled creep and fatigue conditions and with those for smooth specimens estimated based on the linear and nonlinear damage summation rule. Furthermore, it may also be important to compare these results with those of smooth specimens estimated based on the Manson–Coffin law when the failure life is fatigue-dominant. Considering these aspects, detailed experiments and analyses were systematically conducted for P92 steel in this study, and the above comparisons were conducted. The results aid in achieving a unified understanding of the law of fracture life, including those under stress- and strain-controlled creep and fatigue conditions. Full article

Friction behaviour at the wheel–rail interface is of critical importance for railway operations and maintenance and is generally characterised by creep curves. The V-Track test rig was used in this study to measure both the lateral and longitudinal creep curves with uncontaminated dry interface conditions, utilising contact pressures representative of operational railway wheel–rail systems. The novelties of this study are threefold. 1. With proper representations of train/track components, the V-Track tests revealed the effects of structural dynamics on measuring wheel–rail creep curves in real life. 2. Pure lateral and longitudinal creepage conditions were produced with two distinct experimental principles—displacement- and force-controlled—on the V-Track, i.e., by carefully controlling the angle of attack and the traction/braking torque, respectively, and thus the coefficient of friction from lateral and longitudinal creep curves measured on the same platform could be cross-checked. 3. The uncertainties in the measured creep curves were analysed, which was rarely addressed in previous studies on creep curve measurements. In addition, the measured creep curves were compared against the theoretical creep curves obtained from Kalker’s CONTACT. The influence of wheel rolling speed and torque direction on the creep curve characteristics was then investigated. The measurement results and findings demonstrate the reliability of the V-Track to measure wheel–rail creep curves and study the wheel–rail frictional rolling contact. Full article

Oil shale, an unconventional oil and gas resource, can generate the required hydrocarbons through high-temperature pyrolysis. In situ conversion extraction technology utilizes downhole heaters to directly inject high-temperature heat into the oil shale layer to achieve the effect of oil and gas recovery. For the metal material components of the combustion heaters, the uneven temperature fields experienced during the start of operations, processing, and end of operations can lead to fatigue conditions, such as high-temperature creep, micro-damage, and micro-deformation due to thermal effects. To prevent the occurrence of the aforementioned issues, it is necessary to conduct fatigue life analysis of downhole combustion heaters. By combining actual combustion heater operation experiments with finite element simulation, this paper analyzes the impact of temperature, structure, and stress amplitude on the fatigue life of heaters. The results indicate that the fatigue life of the heaters is most significantly influenced by the metal gaskets, and the higher the exhaust gas temperature, the lower the fatigue life of the heater. Heating operations significantly reduce the fatigue life of the heater, while cooling operations have almost no effect on the fatigue life. Circular-pore metal gaskets have a higher fatigue life than those with a square hole shape. Considering only the thickness of the metal gaskets, the thicker the gasket, the higher the fatigue life. Stress amplitude has the most significant impact on the fatigue life of the heater; when the stress amplitude is doubled, the metal gaskets quickly undergo fatigue damage. Full article

This study systematically investigated the low-cycle fatigue (LCF) and creep–fatigue interaction behaviors of medium-silicon molybdenum ductile iron. It was found that QTRSi4Mo exhibited cyclic hardening at room temperature and 400 °C, whereas it exhibited cyclic softening at 600 °C and 700 °C for low-cycle stress–strain responses. During creep–fatigue tests with hold time, variations in the strain amplitude did not alter the hysteresis loop shape or the hardening/softening characteristics of the material. They only induced a slight upward shift in the yield center. Additionally, stress relaxation primarily occurred in the initial phase of the hold period, so the hold duration had little effect on the final stress value. The investigation of creep–fatigue life models highlighted that accurately characterizing the damage induced by stress relaxation during the hold stage is critical for creep damage evaluation. The calculated creep damage results differed greatly from the experimental results of the time fraction model (TF). A combined approach using the strain energy density dissipation model (T-SEDE) and the Ostergren method demonstrated excellent predictive capability for creep–fatigue life. Full article

This study investigates the fatigue durability of Plexus MA300 methacrylic adhesive, which is employed in structural joints of metals, plastics, and composites. Cast adhesive specimens were subjected to cyclic tensile loads at a frequency of 5 Hz with a stress ratio R = 0.1. Six load levels were tested. Hysteresis loops were recorded during testing and analyzed in detail. Significant differences in fatigue fracture characteristics were observed depending on load level. Specimens subjected to high loads exhibited a characteristic radial structure with a distinct crack initiation point, whereas specimens tested at lower loads showed more uniform, matte fracture surfaces. Hysteresis loop analysis revealed phenomena typical for polymers: creep and damping causing energy dissipation. Various fatigue approaches were compared: stress-based, strain-based, energy-based, and stiffness-based. The highest coefficient of determination (R²) was obtained for the model based on strain energy density, indicating its superior utility in predicting the fatigue life of the tested adhesive. The obtained results contribute to the understanding of the fatigue behavior of methacrylic adhesives and provide practical data for structural joint design involving this material class. Aero-engine turbine vanes made from directionally solidified nickel-based superalloys often fail with crack formation from the external wall of cooling channels. Therefore, this study simulates the compressive load on the external wall of the vane and conducts a sequence of creep–fatigue evaluations at 980 °C to investigate the creep–fatigue damage mechanisms of a directionally solidified superalloy and to assess its life. It is found that at low strain ranges, creep damage is dominant, with creep cavities forming inside the specimen and fatigue sources mostly distributed in the specimen interior. As the strain range increases, the damage mechanism transitions from creep-dominated to creep–fatigue coupled damage, with cracks nucleating preferentially on the surface and exhibiting a characteristic of multiple fatigue sources. In the longitudinal (L) specimen, dislocations in multiple orientations of the {111}<110> slip system are activated simultaneously, interacting within the γ channels to form dislocation networks, and dislocations shear through the γ′ phase via antiphase boundary (APB) pairs. In the transverse (T) specimen, stacking intrinsic stacking faults (SISFs) accumulate within the limited {111}<112> slip systems, subsequently forming a dislocation slip band. The modified creep–fatigue life prediction model, incorporating strain energy dissipation and stress relaxation mechanisms, demonstrates an accurate fatigue life prediction under creep–fatigue coupling, with a prediction accuracy within an error band of 1.86 times.
