Tin is an indispensable metal for contemporary society owing to its extensive application. China is a major tin manufacturer and consumer worldwide. Nonetheless, the crucial characteristics of its tin metabolism remain limited. Therefore, a dynamic material flow analysis (MFA) from 2001 to 2022 was performed in this study to trace China’s tin flows and stocks. Findings show that China became a net tin exporter from a life cycle perspective, and annual tin consumption embodied in various final products varied between 49.3 kilo tons (Kt) in 2001 and 161.5 Kt in 2022, with home appliances and electronics being the dominant consumption sectors. A total of 913.3 Kt of tin became in-use stocks. In addition, the imported tin embodied in various final products varied between 13.9 Kt in 2001 and 21.6 Kt in 2022, with machinery being the dominant consumption sector. The exported tin embodied in various final products varied between 12.0 Kt in 2001 and 76.3 Kt in 2022, with machinery being the dominant consumption sector. Finally, this study proposes some suggestions, in view of the Chinese reality, like enhancing tin recycling, promoting tin geological prospecting, optimizing the structure of the tin trade, and promoting regional cooperation, to improve the supply security of tin resources. The new generation of robots (Industry 5.0 and beyond) is expected to be accompanied by the massive introduction of autonomous and cooperative agents in our society, both in the industrial and service sectors. Cooperation with humans will be simplified by humanoid robots with a similar kinematic outline and a similar kinematic redundancy, which is required by the diversity of tasks that will be performed. A bio-inspired approach is proposed for coordinating the redundant DOFs of such agents. This approach is based on the ideomotor theory of action, combined with the passive motion paradigm, to implicitly address the degrees of freedom problem, without any kinematic inversion, while producing coordinated motor patterns structured according to the typical features of biological motion. At the same time, since the approach is force-field-based, it allows us to integrate the computational loop parallel modules that exploit the redundancy of the system for satisfying geometric or kinematic constraints implemented by appropriate repulsive force fields. Moreover, the model is expanded to include dynamic constraints associated with the Lagrangian dynamics of the humanoid robot to improve the energetic efficiency of the generated actions. Full article

As Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) gradually become the common language for sustainable development of international society and international cooperation in China, it is worth discussing whether ESG practices can help Chinese enterprises shape a responsible international image, overcome the liability of foreignness (LOF) and improve the long-term performance of cross-border mergers and acquisitions (M&As). On the basis of theoretical discussion, combined with the panel data of cross-border M&As of China A-share listed companies from 2010 to 2021, this paper empirically examines that the ESG performance of acquirers has a significant positive impact on the long-term performance of cross-border mergers and acquisitions (M&As) of China A-share listed companies. Furthermore, the ESG performance of environment and governance dimensions and heavily polluting enterprises has stronger incentive effects on the long-term performance of cross-border M&As. The ESG performance of the acquirer positively affects the long-term performance of cross-border M&As of China A-share listed companies by acquiring capital market resources, product market competitiveness, regulatory legitimacy, and enhancing internal synergy. A university’s reputation is a key indicator of the quality of its education, the competitiveness of its alumni, its institutional influence in society, and its degree of global recognition, including its ranking and rating among higher education institutions (HEIs) around the world. This not only enhances institutional standing and secures positions in international rankings but also promotes sustainable education practices. In addition, students, their parents, and their partners select universities due to their trust in the reliability of a university’s public reputation and ranking. This study proposes a model to assess a university’s reputation based on specific factors. In this research, the dependent variable is university reputation, the mediating variable is university social responsibility, and the independent variables include the teacher reputation, alumni reputation, research and innovation, and cooperation. A survey of 5902 respondents—including alumni, employers, and parents—offers diverse perspectives on university reputation. Data were analyzed using structural equation modeling tools (Smart PLS 4.1 and SPSS 25.0). The findings confirm that social responsibility has a strong and positive influence on university reputation. Furthermore, faculty and alumni reputation, research and innovation, and external collaboration directly enhance universities’ social responsibility. This suggests that social responsibility serves as a key mediating variable in the relationship between institutional capacity and reputation. This study represents the first empirical assessment of university reputation in Mongolia, addressing a notable gap in the literature. By incorporating context-specific insights and stakeholder perspectives, the research offers both theoretical contributions and practical implications. The results provide a foundation for developing regionally responsive strategies to improve the quality of higher education and advance sustainable development goals. Full article

This study anticipates cooperative manure management as a process for generating bioenergy from livestock manure, thereby reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in Bangladesh. Therefore, this study’s main objective was to identify clusters for cooperative society development and optimize suitable locations for biogas plant establishment within a cooperative system. Scenarios were explored based on manure types using cluster and network analyses of geographic information systems (GIS). The study observed 13 clusters, which have the potential to produce 6045 million m3 of biogas that can be converted to 9068.64 GWh of electricity yearly. Biogas plants additionally produced 5491.04 kilotons of biofertilizer by reducing GHG emissions estimated to be 10.16 million tons of CO2eq in 2024. This study also optimized 10, 6, and 8 optimum locations for biogas plants according to the scenarios. To implement the findings, this study recommended a coordinated action plan based on the circular economy, which helps to obtain both environmental and economic benefits for a cooperative society. These cooperatives can be implemented for renewable energy production from livestock manure at the community level for sustainable energy generation in Bangladesh. Full article

With the shift of the global innovation model from traditional closed-loop to open ecosystems, knowledge sharing and collaborative cooperation among firms have become key to obtaining sustainable competitive advantages. However, existing studies mostly focus on the static structure, and there is an insufficient exploration of the dynamic evolutionary mechanism and multi-party game strategies. In this paper, a two-dimensional analysis framework integrating the evolutionary game and the Lotka–Volterra model is constructed to explore the behavioral and strategic evolution of core enterprises, SMEs and the government in the innovation ecosystem. Through theoretical modeling and numerical simulation, the effects of different variables on system stability are revealed. It is found that a moderately balanced benefit allocation can stimulate two-way knowledge sharing, while an over- or under-allocation ratio will inhibit the synergy efficiency of the system; a moderate difference in the knowledge stock can promote knowledge complementarity, but an over-concentration will lead to the monopoly and closure of the system; and the government subsidy needs to accurately match the cost of the openness of the enterprises with the potential benefits to the society, so as to avoid the incentive from being unused. Accordingly, it is suggested to optimize the competition structure among enterprises through the dynamic benefit distribution mechanism, knowledge sharing platform construction and classification subsidy policy, promote the evolution of the innovation ecosystem to a balanced state of mutual benefit and symbiosis, and provide theoretical basis and practical inspiration for the governance of the open innovation ecosystem. The so-called “counterfeit monks and nuns” 僧尼偽濫 is regarded as an important reason for the “Huichang Persecution of Buddhism” 會昌滅佛, but it reflects the central views of the Tang Dynasty. When we delve into the local society of the Mid-to-Late Tang period, we find that they developed their own narrative logic. From the perspective of the imperial court, Li Deyu 李德裕 criticized Wang Zhixing 王智興 for establishing an ordination altar in Sizhou 泗州 for personal gain. However, in the biographical inscription of monk Mingyuan 明遠 in Sizhou, Wang Zhixing is portrayed as a key figure who collaborated with Mingyuan to ensure the survival of the Kaiyuan Monastery 開元寺, with the inauguration of the ordination altar 戒壇 serving as a necessary means to obtain financial resources. In fact, Mingyuan had previously undertaken a similar operation at the Lingju Monastery 靈居寺 in Liuhe County 六合縣, Yangzhou 揚州. The inscription of the Lingju Monastery Stele 大唐揚州六合縣靈居寺碑 reflects the cooperation between local monks and secular people at that time. During the process of rebuilding the monasteries, Mingyuan cleverly exploited the cult of the divine monk Sengqie 僧伽 within the Society of Jianghuai 江淮. The cult of Sengqie had become a national belief during the Mid-to-Late Tang period, and the existence of the Sengqie pagoda 僧伽塔 made the Kaiyuan Monastery in Sizhou uniquely significant. Later on, Youxuan 幽玄 also carried out similar initiatives by establishing an ordination altar for the restoration at the Baoli Monastery 寶曆寺 in Hongzhou 洪州. If we set aside the shadow of the overarching theme of the Huichang Persecution of Buddhism on the history of Buddhism during the Mid-to-Late Tang period, we may uncover a more vibrant picture of local Buddhism. This study introduces a simple model, which can be used to examine the influence of reputation on expected income achieved within the Iterated Prisoner’s Dilemma (IPD) game framework. The research explores how different reputation distributions among society members impact overall outcomes by modeling a society of agents, each characterized by a reputation score that dictates their likelihood of cooperation. Due to the simplicity of the model, we can analytically determine the expected incomes based on the distribution of agents’ reputations and model parameters. The results show that a higher reputation generally leads to greater expected income, thereby promoting cooperation over defection. However, in some cases, where there are more defecting individuals, the expected income reaches the maximum for agents with an average reputation, and then decreases for individuals who cooperate more. Various scenarios, including uniform, increasing, and decreasing reputation distributions, are analyzed to understand their effects on the promoted interaction strategy. Finally, we outline future extensions of the model and potential research directions, including the exploration of alternative reputation distributions, variable interaction parameters, and different payoff structures in the dilemma games. This article examines algorithmic bias as a pressing legal challenge, situating the issue within the broader context of artificial intelligence (AI) governance. We employed comparative legal analysis and reviewed pertinent regulatory documents to examine how the fragmented U.S. approaches and the EU’s user-centric legal frameworks, such as the GDPR, DSA, and AI Act, address the systemic risks posed by biased algorithms. The findings underscore persistent enforcement gaps, particularly concerning opaque black-box algorithmic design, which hampers bias detection and remediation. The paper highlights how current regulatory efforts disproportionately affect marginalized communities and fail to provide effective protection across jurisdictions. It also identifies structural imbalances in legal instruments, particularly in relation to risk classification, transparency, and fairness standards. Notably, emerging regulations often lack the technical and ethical capacity for implementation. We argue that global cooperation is not only necessary but inevitable, as regional solutions alone are insufficient to govern transnational AI systems. Without harmonized international standards, algorithmic bias will continue to reproduce existing inequalities under the guise of objectivity. The article advocates for inclusive, cross-sectoral collaboration among governments, developers, and civil society to ensure the responsible development of AI and uphold fundamental rights. The sustainability of the natural gas-to-methanol (NGTM) and methanol-to-gasoline (MTG) processes are assessed in this systematic review as a potential substitute in the global energy transition. Methanol offers itself as a versatile and less carbon-intensive substitute for conventional gasoline in light of growing environmental concerns and the demand for cleaner fuels. This review’s rationale is to assess MTG’s ability to lessen environmental impact while preserving compatibility with current fuel infrastructure. The goal is to examine methanol and gasoline’s effects on the environment, society, and economy throughout their life cycles. This review used a two-phase systematic literature review methodology, filtering and evaluating studies that were indexed by Scopus using bibliometric and thematic analysis. A total of 25 documents were reviewed, in which 22 documents analyzed part of this study, and 68% employed LCA or techno-economic analysis, with the U.S. contributing 35% of the overall publications. A comparative analysis of the reviewed literature indicates that methanol-based fuels offer significantly lower greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and life cycle environmental impacts than gasoline, particularly when combined with carbon capture and renewable feedstocks. This review also highlights benefits, such as improved safety and energy security, while acknowledging challenges, including high production costs, infrastructure adaptation, and toxicity concerns. Several drawbacks are high manufacturing costs, the necessity to adjust infrastructure, and toxicity issues. The report suggests investing in renewable methanol production, AI-driven process optimization, and robust legislative frameworks for integrating green fuels. The life cycle sustainability assessment (LCSA) of NGTM and MTG systems should be investigated in future studies, particularly in light of different feedstock and regional circumstances. The findings emphasize NGTM and MTG’s strategic role in aligning with several UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and add to the worldwide conversation on sustainable fuels. A strong transition necessitates multi-stakeholder cooperation, innovation, and supporting policies to fully realize the sustainability promise of cleaner fuels like methanol. Full article

Ecological restoration and brownfield reuse are important issues in the current field of urban sustainable development and environmental protection. This paper adopts bibliometric and network analysis methods, using more than 600 literature from Web of Science (WOS) and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) databases as research objects, to analyze the research trends, main researchers, contributions of different disciplines, and research hotspots in ecological restoration and brownfield reuse. Based on the results of quantitative analysis, this paper reviews the main research theories, methods, and technologies of ecological restoration and brownfield reuse at home and abroad, as well as response strategies in different regions and future prospects under challenges. Among the top 10 disciplines in terms of disciplinary contribution, the discipline with the highest relevance in the research articles of CNKI is “Environmental Science and Technology”, accounting for approximately 47.24%. The discipline with the highest relevance in the research articles of WOS is “Building Science and Engineering”, accounting for approximately 61.21%. In terms of research theories and methods, emphasis is placed on the application of ecological engineering, landscape ecology, land economics, and sustainable development methods. At the same time, adaptive management methods are emphasized, aiming to achieve a balance between ecological protection and urban development. In terms of response strategies for different regions, the main strategies for ecological restoration and brownfield reuse are proposed from five main aspects: reducing soil erosion and controlling water pollution, restoring ecological communities and enhancing biodiversity, landscape reshaping and spatial transformation, tourism development, and leisure space design. Based on the current challenges in technology, law, funding, management, and society, research prospects for strengthening interdisciplinary integration, digital drive, interdisciplinary collaboration, and multi-party cooperation in the future are proposed. It can be seen that research in this field is no longer just a simple ecological issue, but a comprehensive social problem. Full article

How to coordinate the relationship between nature reserves and surrounding communities to achieve a win–win situation for protection and development has become an urgent issue that governments around the world need to address. The concept of community co-management emerged in this context, aiming to promote cooperation and interaction between protected areas and surrounding communities, achieve sustainable use of natural resources, and promote the healthy development of the community economy. This study conducted empirical analysis using the Xishuangbanna National Nature Reserve and surrounding communities in China as a case study. This study aims to reveal the key factors affecting the perception of the households in the surrounding communities of the national nature reserve through an in-depth analysis of their perceptions, attitudes, and actual effects on the innovative management model of community co-management. At the same time, it provides empirical evidence and theoretical support for the construction of a more reasonable, efficient, and win–win nature reserve management model. Based on field research and interviews, combined with a questionnaire survey of stakeholders, this study utilized the Q method to conduct a comprehensive analysis of household perceptions under community co-management. The research results indicate that community co-management is an effective path to promote the coordinated development of the local economy, society, and ecology. Specifically, this model not only significantly promotes employment and entrepreneurship among community residents but also achieves economic self-sufficiency and steady growth by cultivating characteristic industries and building distinctive brands. Further analysis reveals that improving residents’ well-being is the core value of community co-management. Meanwhile, system reform is seen as the key to promoting the deepening development of community co-management. This study not only helps to enhance households’ understanding and participation in ecological protection and promotes the deep integration of ecological protection and community development but also provides valuable experience and inspiration for the management of nature reserves in other regions around the world. The global energy matrix needs to undergo considerable changes to achieve the clean and affordable energy target as per the Sustainable Development Goals determined by the United Nations (UN) by 2030. Hydrogen has stood out worldwide as a potential substitute for current non-renewable sources. Once thought to be minor, if not non-existent, natural hydrogen is now becoming a more significant alternative that is being explored. Natural hydrogen can be obtained from subsurface rocks by the generation process of serpentinization, radiolysis, rock fracturing, or magma degassing, using extraction technology similar to that already used in the oil and gas industries. Thus, the goal of this research was to perform a consistent technical–scientific and bibliometric review of natural hydrogen, presenting the Brazilian context. The results showed that from 2017 onwards, there has been an increase in research publications related to the topic. France is the country with the most publications. In Brazil, the potential of natural hydrogen sources has been studied in states such as Goias, Tocantins, Minas Gerais, Roraima, Bahia, and Ceará. It is still difficult to predict the potential cost of natural hydrogen production. However, estimates through the Hydroma company show a cost of 0.5 USD/kg, and Australia and Spain target price projects at approximately 1 USD/kg of natural decarbonization could be aided by natural hydrogen, which could supply the world’s energy needs for generations. Geological processes, reserve behavior, and the efficiency of extraction are among the unknowns, though. Brazil requires a strong regulatory framework and additional research. For exploration to be sustainable, cooperation between the government, businesses, and society is essential. Full article

The rapid urbanization of the world has brought significant environmental, social, and economic challenges to human society. To build a sustainable county, there are many limiting factors, such as the environment, financial resources, and population. Based on this, the purpose of this study is to investigate how countries can empower their development through a sustainable design path for parks with the participation of all. The core of public participation in co-construction lies in the interactive relationship between the government, society, citizens, and many other groups. That is, “co-construction, co-governance, and sharing” is the basic content of the new pattern of social governance from the perspective of the park city; at its core is joint participation, division of labor, and cooperation. Using qualitative research methods, Kaiyuan, a county in Yunnan Province, was selected as a case study, focusing on the Phoenix Ecological Park and Happiness Lawn; citizens and managers were interviewed to explore paths for sustainable design in the counties. The contribution of this study is a research model of sustainable design for county parks with the participation of all the people. The study found that public participation should consider multiple co-constructions and formulate a sound sustainable design path from three dimensions: counties, managers, and citizens. Combined with the local characteristics of counties, the government has called on enterprises, organizations, and citizens to participate together in improving the quality of life and happiness of county residents. Could Commoning Unlock the Potential of Integrated Landscape Approaches?

Background: Landscape approaches are recognized for their holistic view on development and conservation. However, they encounter sustainability and localization challenges due to short-term funding constraints and dependence on external experts. In this paper, we examine commoning as a means of land tenure interventions that enable mixed land use and community stewardship. Methods: Based on desk research and 20 interviews, an institutional analysis was performed on two landscape management cases to shed light on commoning processes and land tenure changes, as well as their impact on land use and community stewardship. Results: In the first case, a collaborative governance model was developed through policy interventions, which provided not only institutional frameworks but also financial resources to incentivize landowners to cooperate with nature conservation groups and share management rights over their land. In the second case, a community land trust model was used by self-organized civil society actors to develop ecovillage practices and ensure the balance of conservation and agricultural uses. In both cases, we found that land tenure innovations in terms of boundary rules, choice rules, aggregation rules, as well as rules for higher-level action situations, were key to enabling land rights sharing, mixed land use, and different levels of stewardship depending on the preferences and capacity of stakeholders. Conclusions: Commoning could address the sustainability and localization challenges faced by landscape approaches to mixed land use and long-term adaptive management. Full article
