Urban expansion has a profound impact on both society and the environment. In this study, VOSviewer 1.6.16 and CiteSpace 6.3.R1 were used to conduct a bibliometric analysis of 2987 articles published during the period of 1992–2022 from the Web of Science database in order to identify the research hotspots and trends of urban expansion and its driving factors. The number of articles significantly increased during the period of 1992–2022. The spatiotemporal characteristics and driving forces of urban expansion, urban growth models and simulations, and the impacts of urban expansion were the main research topics. The rate of urban expansion showed regional differences. Socioeconomic factors, political and institutional factors, natural factors, path effects, and proximity effects were the main driving factors. Urban expansion promoted economic growth, occupied cultivated land, and affected ecological environments. Big data and deep learning techniques were recently applied due to advancements in information techniques. With the increasing awareness of environmental protection, the number of studies on environmental impacts and spatial planning regulations has increased. Some political and institutional factors, such as subsidies, taxation, spatial planning, new development strategies, regulation policies, and economic industries, had controversial or unknown impacts. Further research on these factors and their mechanisms is needed. A limitation of this study is that articles which were not indexed, were not included in bibliometric analysis. Further studies can review these articles and conduct comparative research to capture the diversity. Full article

Objectives: The present cross-sectional analysis aimed to investigate whether Large Language Model-based chatbots can be used as reliable sources of information in orthodontics by evaluating chatbot responses and comparing them to those of dental practitioners with different levels of knowledge. Methods: Eight true and false frequently asked orthodontic questions were submitted to five leading chatbots (ChatGPT-4, Claude-3-Opus, Gemini 2.0 Flash Experimental, Microsoft Copilot, and DeepSeek). The consistency of the answers given by chatbots at four different times was assessed using Cronbach’s α. Chi-squared test was used to compare chatbot responses with those given by two groups of clinicians, i.e., general dental practitioners (GDPs) and orthodontic specialists (Os) recruited in an online survey via social media, and differences were considered significant when p < 0.05. Additionally, chatbots were asked to provide a justification for their dichotomous responses using a chain-of-through prompting approach and rating the educational value according to the Global Quality Scale (GQS). Results: A high degree of consistency in answering was found for all analyzed chatbots (α > 0.80). When comparing chatbot answers with GDP and O ones, statistically significant differences were found for almost all the questions (p < 0.05). When evaluating the educational value of chatbot responses, DeepSeek achieved the highest GQS score (median 4.00; interquartile range 0.00), whereas CoPilot had the lowest one (median 2.00; interquartile range 2.00). Conclusions: Although chatbots yield somewhat useful information about orthodontics, they can provide misleading information when dealing with controversial topics. Full article

Microbial extracellular polymeric substances (EPSs) are emerging as sustainable alternatives to conventional corrosion inhibitors due to their eco-friendly nature, biodegradability, and functional versatility. Secreted by diverse microorganisms including bacteria, fungi, archaea, and algae, EPSs are composed mainly of polysaccharides, proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids. These biopolymers, chiefly polysaccharides and proteins, are accountable for surface corrosion prevention through biofilm formation, allowing microbial survival and promoting their environmental adaptation. Usually, EPS-mediated corrosion inhibitions can take place via different mechanisms: protective film formation, metal ions chelation, electrochemical property alteration, and synergy with inorganic inhibitors. Even though efficacious EPS corrosion prevention has been demonstrated in several former studies, the application of such microbial inhibitors remains, so far, a controversial topic due to the variability in their composition and compatibility toward diverse metal surfaces. Thus, this review outlines the microbial origins, biochemical properties, and inhibition mechanisms of EPSs, emphasizing their advantages and challenges in industrial applications. Advances in synthetic biology, nanotechnology, and machine learning are also highlighted and could provide new opportunities to enhance EPS production and functionality. Therefore, the adoption of EPS-based corrosion inhibitors represents a promising strategy for environmentally sustainable corrosion control. Full article

The construction of a fence in the sea made of bamboo sticks along the coastal areas of Tangerang, Indonesia, caused controversy and many public debates in most Indonesian media. The case is, however, not unique. It provides a means to pose three questions related to the following topics: (1) which controversies and contradictions between formal procedures and informal practices related to land and sea rights exist; (2) which values and perceptions of the involved stakeholders play a role in these controversies and contradictions; and (3) which kinds of boundary work or boundary objects could resolve these controversies and contradictions. The theoretical embedding for the subject lies in the theories of territory and space on the one hand and formal institutional models of land and sea on the other. The analytical model used to evaluate the controversies and contradictions is McKinsey’s 7S model, while the data used are extracted from journalistic public media reports and social media. The results show a significant discrepancy between the values connected to formal and informal territorial claims, as well as a lack of enforcement capacity to address this discrepancy. Instead, the policy response exhibits an excessive and uncontrolled discretionary space for all stakeholders to pursue their own interests. The theoretical novelty is that institutional models governing territorial sea and land rights, restrictions and responsibilities need to be aligned and connected based on detecting where and how the values of affected stakeholders can be harmonized, rather than enforcing a unilateral system of values of disconnected systems (of either land or sea). The policy implementation implications are to create stricter procedural steps when providing building permits in coastal areas, with better enforcement and stricter control. Soft governance campaigns should raise awareness of what is allowed and required for coastal building permits and reclamations. Additionally, there could be quicker, more thorough inspections of emerging or hidden practices of non-approved fencing and non-approved occupation of coastal land and sea. Full article

Invasive, non-native species are recognised as a global problem, and their dispersal and introduction are controversial topics. However, a source of particular interest is that of human–nature interactions and consequent perceptions of natives and non-natives, an issue complicated by misunderstandings of history and sometimes of science. Furthermore, there are only few studies on the perceptions of exotic species by people living in a region subject to invasion. The research compared local stakeholder responses to a non-native invasive bird (ring-necked parakeet Psittacula krameri Scopoli) in two areas with contrasting scenarios regarding the history of establishment, their spread, and their current status. In both locations, parakeets were considered by respondents to be attractive, but where long-established, they were also viewed as a nuisance. Desire for or tolerance of active control measures also increased in areas with a well-established population in comparison to where parakeets were still viewed as a novelty. Increased encounters between native birds and invasive parakeets influenced attitudes towards possible controls. An online survey gathered stakeholder responses, and long-term citizen science and action research were combined with data from Local Environmental Records Centres and ornithological recording groups for each region. This study examines how Chinese and Western news media covered artificial intelligence (AI) privacy issues in higher education from 2019 to 2024. News articles were retrieved from Nexis Uni. First, non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) was employed to identify core AI privacy topics in university teaching, administration, and research. Next, a time trend analysis investigated how media attention shifted in relation to key events, including the COVID-19 pandemic and the emergence of generative AI. Finally, a sentiment analysis was conducted to compare the distribution of positive, negative, and neutral reporting. The findings indicate that AI-driven proctoring, student data security, and institutional governance are central concerns in both Chinese and English media. However, the focus and framing differ: some Western outlets highlight individual privacy rights and controversies in remote exam monitoring, while Chinese coverage more frequently addresses AI-driven educational innovation and policy support. The shift to remote education after 2020 and the rise of generative AI from 2023 onward have intensified discussions on AI privacy in higher education. The results offer a cross-cultural perspective for institutions seeking to reconcile the adoption of AI with robust privacy safeguards and provide a foundation for future data governance frameworks under diverse regulatory environments. Cow’s milk allergy is one of the most prevalent food allergies in infancy. Exclusive breastfeeding is the recommended source of nutrition for the first six months of life, but some infants may develop cow’s milk allergy due to the transfer of milk proteins such as β-lactoglobulin through breast milk. There are still many uncertainties about cow’s milk allergy in breastfed babies. The purpose of this review is to summarize the latest findings mainly focused on immunological mechanisms and challenges in diagnosis. We pointed out which clinical signs in breastfed infants are associated with immediate IgE responses and which are linked to delayed non-IgE mechanisms or mixed IgE/non-IgE-mediated reactions. Since standard IgE tests are often useless in non-IgE cases, diagnosis typically involves dietary elimination and cow’s milk challenge. This study addresses the controversial topic of maternal elimination diets, assessing the nutritional risks to both mothers and infants in relation to their possible benefits. It has also been discussed whether the microbiota signature could be a potential factor in both tolerance development and the risk of cow’s milk allergy in early life. Overall, accurate diagnosis and personalized treatment plans are vital to prevent overdiagnosis and ensure proper growth while maintaining the practice of breastfeeding. Full article

In recent years, corporate ESG performance has been widely incorporated into investment decisions and capital allocation considerations, becoming a focal point and hot topic for research by governments and organizations worldwide. However, due to various reasons, significant discrepancies have emerged in ESG ratings for the same company across different institutions, and this growing divergence in ESG ratings has increasingly drawn the attention of scholars. Studying the differences in ESG (environmental, social, and corporate governance) ratings is of great significance. This not only helps to understand the root causes of differences, improve the objectivity, consistency, and comparability of ratings, but also helps users better understand the meaning and limitations of rating results. It is beneficial for investors to understand the focus of different ratings and develop more effective investment strategies. It can promote rated companies to improve the quality and transparency of ESG-related information disclosure. It can also provide a reference for regulatory agencies and policymakers, identify market failures and potential risks, and promote the development of more unified standards and frameworks. At the same time, this study can also promote the in-depth development of relevant academic research and theories. Based on this, this study systematically reviews the relevant literature on ESG rating divergence, focusing on its existence, causes, influencing factors, and impacts. The study finds that, in addition to the widespread existence of rating divergence in corporate ESG performance, scholars also disagree on the measurement and methods of this divergence. The reasons for rating divergence are mainly that ESG is a qualitative indicator; top-level design, intermediate calculations, and bottom-level data collection across multiple stages exacerbate divergence; and controversies in practice further deepen divergence, among others. The influencing factors and impact effects of ESG rating divergence are diverse. Given the existence of ESG rating divergence, all parties should treat ESG ratings with caution. This paper offers corresponding recommendations and looks forward to the future, providing a foundation for subsequent research. Full article

The relationship between ambient particulate matter (PM) and mental health conditions is well established. No study so far has investigated whether different sources of air pollution are associated with distinctive worries. We recruited n = 47 citizens living in an area with seasonal air pollution from studded tires (winter) and cruise ships (summer). We asked about seasonal well-being, symptoms of insomnia, migraine, and eco-anxiety, as well as worries about air pollution. Participants were more worried about air pollution from cruise ships as compared to studded tires (p = 0.013), which stands in contrast to PM caused by studded tires being more severe. There were significant correlations between worries about outdoor air pollution and insomnia symptoms (p = 0.003), worries about indoor air pollution and migraine symptoms (p < 0.001), worries about air pollution from studded tires and eco-anxiety (p = 0.001), and worries about air pollution from cruise ships and symptoms of migraine (p = 0.001). The low participation rate limits generalizability but is a result by itself because of the highly controversial topic of studded tires. We hypothesize that participation in studies set out to demonstrate negative effects of particulate matter needs to be strategically planned when the overall opinion of the population to be studied is positive towards the source of the hazardous pollution. Additionally, we hypothesize that the contribution of air pollution from different sources receives a varying degree of attention from the population. Further research into the relation between attitudes towards the unsustainable use of studded tires and perceived vs. real air pollution might help to design effective campaigns to influence decision-making. Diabetes mellitus has been knowingly associated with increased risk of fractures, so much so that skeletal fragility is considered a complication of diabetes. Determinants of bone fragility in this chronic condition are several, and the diabetes treatment choice could influence bone metabolism. Sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) have recently expanded the therapeutic armamentarium for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D); these antihyperglycemic drugs act by reducing renal glucose reabsorption in the proximal tubule and have a proven cardiorenal benefit. The role of SGLT2i towards phospho-calcium metabolism is still unclear, so we aimed to review the current evidence of the relationship between SGLT2i and calcium and phosphate homeostasis. The PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Knowledge databases were searched to identify original research articles, meta-analyses, and scientific reviews on effects on bone metabolism in T2D patients treated with SGLT2i. Emerging data indicate that SGLT2i may lead to a rise of bone turnover markers, promoting a lower skeletal bone density and an increased fracture risk on murine models, but in real-world studies, results are controversial. Therefore, more clinical trials are needed to further clarify this topic, and the effects of SGLT2i on calcium homeostasis remain to date poorly understood. Full article

Background/Objectives: Aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) remains a life-threatening cerebrovascular event with high rates of mortality and long-term morbidity. Among its complications, delayed cerebral ischemia (DCI) is a major contributor to poor clinical outcomes. Although cerebral vasospasm has traditionally been considered the primary mechanism underlying DCI, recent studies have revealed the multifactorial nature of this condition. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the pathophysiology, preventive strategies, and current treatment options for DCI following aSAH. Methods: A narrative literature review was conducted using the PubMed database to identify peer-reviewed articles relevant to the prevention and treatment of DCI following aSAH. The search strategy employed the following terms: (“Subarachnoid Hemorrhage” [MeSH]) AND “Delayed Cerebral Ischemia” AND (“Prevention and Control” [Subheading] OR “Secondary Prevention” [MeSH]). This search strategy was designed to capture studies addressing both pharmacological and non-pharmacological preventive measures for DCI. Results: A comprehensive PubMed search identified a total of 113 relevant articles. Among these, 40 publications primarily addressed pharmacological interventions, while 22 focused on neuromonitoring techniques. An additional 20 articles explored the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying DCI, and 15 involved preclinical studies utilizing animal models. The remaining 16 articles encompassed diverse topics, including prophylactic endovascular therapies, newly proposed definitions of DCI, treatment algorithm development, functional outcome analyses, and entries in clinical trial registries. Emerging evidence highlights that vasospasm alone does not account for all cases of DCI. Pharmacological approaches such as nimodipine, clazosentan, and fasudil have shown varying degrees of efficacy. Circulatory management and removal of subarachnoid hematoma via CSF drainage or thrombolytics may reduce DCI risk, although their impact on long-term neurological outcomes remains controversial. Endovascular therapy and adjunctive agents such as cilostazol or anticoagulants have demonstrated potential but require further validation through large-scale trials. Conclusions: Effective DCI prevention and treatment require a multimodal approach targeting diverse pathological mechanisms beyond vasospasm. Improved risk stratification, early detection, and individualized therapy are essential for advancing the management of patients with aSAH. Full article

Multi-Domain Controversial Text Detection Based on a Machine Learning and Deep Learning Stacked Ensemble

Due to the rapid proliferation of social media and online reviews, the accurate identification and classification of controversial texts has emerged as a significant challenge in the field of natural language processing. However, traditional text-classification methodologies frequently encounter critical limitations, such as feature sensitivity and inadequate generalization capabilities. This results in a notably suboptimal performance when confronted with diverse controversial content. To address these substantial limitations, this paper proposes a novel controversial text-detection framework based on stacked ensemble learning to enhance the accuracy and robustness of text classification. Firstly, considering the multidimensional complexity of textual features, we integrate comprehensive feature engineering, i.e., encompassing word frequency, statistical metrics, sentiment analysis, and comment tree structure features, as well as advanced feature selection methodologies, particularly lassonet, i.e., a neural network with feature sparsity, to effectively address dimensionality challenges while enhancing model interpretability and computational efficiency. Secondly, we design a two-tier stacked ensemble architecture, which not only combines the strengths of multiple machine learning algorithms, e.g., gradient-boosted decision tree (GBDT), random forest (RF), and extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost), with deep learning models, e.g., gated recurrent unit (GRU) and long short-term memory (LSTM), but also implements the support vector machine (SVM) for efficient meta-learning. Furthermore, we systematically compare three hyperparameter optimization algorithms, including the sparrow search algorithm (SSA), particle swarm optimization (PSO), and Bayesian optimization (BO). The experimental results demonstrate that the SSA exhibits a superior performance in exploring high-dimensional parameter spaces. Extensive experimentation across diverse topics and domains also confirms that our proposed methodology significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art approaches. Full article

Soil health is the cornerstone of sustainable agriculture, serving as the foundation for crop productivity, environmental resilience, and long-term ecosystem stability. Contemporary agricultural methods, characterized by excessive pesticide and fertilizer application, monoculture, and intensive tillage, have resulted in extensive soil degradation, requiring novel strategies to restore and sustain soil functionality. This review examined sustainable practices to enhance soil health and improve crop quality in modern agricultural systems. Preserving soil’s physical, chemical, and biological characteristics is essential for its health, achievable through various agronomic strategies. Practices such as crop rotation, cover cropping, no-till or carbon farming, conservation agriculture (CA), and the use of organic amendments were explored for their ability to restore the soil structure, increase organic matter, and promote biodiversity. These initiatives seek to preserve and enhance soil ecosystems by aligning agricultural practices with ecological principles, ensuring long-term productivity and environmental stability. Enhancing soil health will improve soil functions, supporting the concept that increasing the soil organic carbon (SOC) is necessary. This study determined that conservation tillage is more advantageous for soil health than conventional tillage, a topic that is still controversial among scientists and farmers, and that various tillage systems exhibit distinct interactions. These strategies, through the integrated management of the interaction of plant, soil, microbial, and human activities, would enhance soil health. Full article

Efficacy and Safety of Prolonged Adjuvant Temozolomide Treatment in Glioblastoma: Prospective Study of 81 Patients Undergoing up to 101 Cycles of Treatment

Background: Although several studies investigated the efficacy of long-term adjuvant temozolomide (TMZ) therapy in glioblastomas (GBs), no univocal data are currently available, and this topic remains controversial. The present study on our ongoing experience aims to assess whether the extended STUPP protocol confers prognostic benefits with acceptable safety. Methods: From 2004 to 2018, 81 patients with a new diagnosis of GB according to the World Health Organization (WHO) 2021 classification, treated with gross total resection (GTR) or subtotal resection (STR), were enrolled. Patients were divided into Group A (long-term TMZ; N = 40) and Group B (standard STUPP protocol; N = 41). Results: In the extended STUPP group, compared with the standard STUPP group, progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) were significantly improved (PFS: 27.8 vs. 7.5 months, p = 0.00001; OS: 35.9 vs. 11.3 months, p = 0.0001). To mitigate a potential survival bias, we focused on those in Group B who completed the recommended six cycles. Patients in Group A demonstrated a prolonged OS compared to Group B (27 vs. 10 months, p < 0.001). Similar findings were observed in a focused analysis of patients who had achieved a minimum survival of 12 months (27 vs. 15 months, p < 0.001) or 18 months (34 vs. 24 months, p = 0.044). Conclusions: Our analysis demonstrates a PFS and OS advantage with extended STUPP and suggests that young patients without corpus callosum invasion, with methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase (MGMT) promoter methylation, and treated with GTR are the best candidates. No significant safety difference emerged between extended and standard TMZ treatment. Full article
