The Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) is revolutionizing healthcare by enabling continuous patient monitoring, early diagnosis, and personalized treatments. However, the het-erogeneity of IoMT devices and the lack of standardized protocols introduce serious security vulnerabilities. To address these challenges, we propose a hybrid BiLSTM-DNN intrusion detection system, named HBiLD-IDS, that combines Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (BiLSTM) networks with Deep Neural Networks (DNNs), leveraging both temporal dependencies in network traffic and hierarchical feature extraction. The model is trained and evaluated on the CICIoMT2024 dataset, which accurately reflects the diversity of devices and attack vectors encountered in connected healthcare environments. The dataset undergoes rigorous preprocessing, including data cleaning, feature selection through correlation analysis and recursive elimination, and feature normalization. Compared to existing IDS models, our approach significantly enhances detection accuracy and generalization capacity in the face of complex and evolving attack patterns. Experimental results show that the proposed IDS model achieves a classification accuracy of 98.81% across 19 attack types confirming its robustness and scalability. This approach represents a promising solution for strengthening the security posture of IoMT networks against emerging cyber threats. Full article

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains Europe’s leading cause of mortality, responsible for >45% of deaths. Beyond established risk factors (hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidaemia, smoking, obesity), psychosocial elements—depression, anxiety, financial stress, personality traits, and trauma—significantly influence CVD development and progression. Behavioural Cardiology addresses this connection by systematically incorporating psychosocial factors into prevention and rehabilitation protocols. This review examines the HEARTBEAT model, developed by Greece’s first Behavioural Cardiology Unit, which aligns with current European guidelines. The model serves dual purposes: primary prevention (targeting at-risk individuals) and secondary prevention (treating established CVD patients). It is a personalised medicine approach that integrates psychosocial profiling with traditional risk assessment, utilising tailored evaluation tools, caregiver input, and multidisciplinary collaboration to address personality traits, emotional states, socioeconomic circumstances, and cultural contexts. The model emphasises three critical implementation aspects: (1) digital health integration, (2) cost-effectiveness analysis, and (3) healthcare system adaptability. Compared to international approaches, it highlights research gaps in psychosocial interventions and advocates for culturally sensitive adaptations, particularly in resource-limited settings. Special consideration is given to older populations requiring tailored care strategies. Ultimately, Behavioural Cardiology represents a transformative systems-based approach bridging psychology, lifestyle medicine, and cardiovascular treatment. This integration may prove pivotal for optimising chronic disease management through personalised interventions that address both biological and psychosocial determinants of cardiovascular health. Art therapy serves as a crucial intervention modality for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), demonstrating unique value in emotional expression, sensory integration, and social communication. However, current practice presents critical challenges, including the disconnect between design expertise and clinical needs, unclear mechanisms of environmental factors’ impact on therapeutic outcomes, and insufficient evidence-based support for technology integration. Purpose: This study aimed to construct an evidence-based theoretical framework for art therapy environment design for children with autism, clarifying the relationship between environmental design elements and therapeutic effectiveness. Methodology: Based on the Web of Science database, this study employed a dual-track approach comprising bibliometric analysis and micro-qualitative content analysis to systematically examine the knowledge structure and developmental trends. Research hotspots were identified through keyword co-occurrence network analysis using CiteSpace, while 24 representative design cases were analyzed to gain insights into design concepts, emerging technologies, and implementation principles. Key Findings: Through keyword network visualization analysis, this study identified ten primary research clusters that were systematically categorized into four core design elements: sensory feedback design, behavioral guidance design, emotional resonance design, and therapeutic support design. A responsive therapeutic environment conceptual framework was proposed, encompassing four interconnected components based on the ABC model from positive psychology: emotional, sensory, environmental, and behavioral dimensions. Evidence-based design principles were established emphasizing child-centeredness, the promotion of multisensory expression, the achievement of dynamic feedback, and appropriate technology integration. Research Contribution: This research establishes theoretical connections between environmental design elements and art therapy effectiveness, providing a systematic design guidance framework for interdisciplinary teams, including environmental designers, clinical practitioners, technology developers, and healthcare administrators. The framework positions technology as a therapeutic mediator rather than a driver, ensuring technological integration supports rather than interferes with children’s natural creative impulses. This contributes to creating more effective environmental spaces for art therapy activities for children with autism while aligning with SDG3 goals for promoting mental health and reducing inequalities in therapeutic access. Quantum computing, with its foundational principles of superposition and entanglement, has the potential to provide significant quantum advantages, addressing challenges that classical computing may struggle to overcome. As data generation continues to grow exponentially and technological advancements accelerate, classical machine learning algorithms increasingly face difficulties in solving complex real-world problems. The integration of classical machine learning with quantum information processing has led to the emergence of quantum machine learning, a promising interdisciplinary field. This work provides the reader with a bottom-up view of quantum circuits starting from quantum data representation, quantum gates, the fundamental quantum algorithms, and more complex quantum processes. Thoroughly studying the mathematics behind them is a powerful tool to guide scientists entering this domain and exploring their connection to quantum machine learning. Quantum algorithms such as Shor’s algorithm, Grover’s algorithm, and the Harrow–Hassidim–Lloyd (HHL) algorithm are discussed in detail. Furthermore, real-world implementations of quantum machine learning and quantum deep learning are presented in fields such as healthcare, bioinformatics and finance. These implementations aim to enhance time efficiency and reduce algorithmic complexity through the development of more effective quantum algorithms. In recent years, the Internet of Things (IoT) has experienced considerable developments and has played an important role in various domains such as industry, agriculture, healthcare, transportation, and environment, especially for smart cities. Along with that, wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are considered to be important components of the IoT system (WSN-IoT) to create smart applications and automate processes. As the number of connected IoT devices increases, privacy and security issues become more complicated due to their external working environments and limited resources. Hence, solutions need to be updated to ensure that data and user privacy are protected from threats and attacks. To support the safety and reliability of such systems, in this paper, security issues in the WSN-IoT are addressed and classified as identifying security challenges and requirements for different kinds of attacks in either WSNs or IoT systems. In addition, security solutions corresponding to different types of attacks are provided, analyzed, and evaluated. We provide different comparisons and classifications based on specific goals and applications that hopefully can suggest suitable solutions for specific purposes in practical. We also suggest some research directions to support new security mechanisms. Full article

As veganism becomes more popular, the number of vegan pregnant women and children is steadily increasing. During vegan pregnancy and early childhood, there is a high risk for nutrient deficiencies that may impair child development. External factors, such as healthcare advice, social networks, and social environments, that affect the diet of vegan pregnant women, parents, and their children, as well as their approach towards dietary supplementation, have not yet been investigated. Various sources of information, combined with a lack of expertise, sparse food and nutritional health literacy, and qualitatively heterogeneous information provision by medical experts, unsettle vegan pregnant women and parents and affect their dietary choices and potentially the health of their children. The VedieS study aims to investigate potential connections between external influences and associated impacts on a vegan diet and the intake of dietary supplements (DS) of pregnant women and children. Two surveys are being conducted within the study: one targeting 1000 vegan pregnant women and parents, and another targeting 60 experts in each of five healthcare groups: gynecologists, pediatricians, general practitioners, pharmacists, and dietitians. This study is the first to examine how socio-economic, social, and further informational factors influence dietary practices during vegan pregnancy and childhood. It highlights the need for reliable, expert-led guidance, as current information sources are often inconsistent and may put these vulnerable groups at risk. Full article

This study documents Black Wisconsinites’ birthing experiences and their proposed solutions to improve Black birthing people’s trust in healthcare. Between 2019 and 2022, we conducted semi-structured, longitudinal interviews (both individual and focus group interviews) with those enrolled in a local perinatal support group program for Black birthing people (N = 25), asking about their pregnancy, birthing, and postpartum experiences and their ideas for building trust in healthcare. Using the Daughtering Method and Braun and Clarke’s method of reflexive thematic analysis, we coded the interview data and then iteratively collated the codes into themes and subthemes. Participants described experiencing medical racism, including healthcare trauma and provider bias, during pregnancy and delivery. They drew connections between those experiences and the distrust they felt toward healthcare providers and the healthcare system. They provided actionable strategies that individual providers and the healthcare system can take to build the trust of Black birthing people: employ more Black providers, listen to Black birthing people, exhibit cultural humility, engage in shared decision-making, build personal connections with patients, and spend more time with patients. This study connects Black birthing people’s experiences of medical racism to feelings of medical distrust and provides community-identified actionable suggestions to build trust and shape how we combat racial disparities in healthcare provision and health outcomes. This study presents a DIKWP-driven artificial consciousness framework for IoT-enabled smart healthcare, integrating a Data–Information–Knowledge–Wisdom–Purpose (DIKWP) cognitive architecture with a software-defined IoT infrastructure. The proposed system deploys DIKWP agents at edge and cloud nodes to transform raw sensor data into high-level knowledge and purpose-driven actions. This is achieved through a structured DIKWP pipeline—from data acquisition and information processing to knowledge extraction, wisdom inference, and purpose-driven decision-making—that enables semantic reasoning, adaptive goal-driven responses, and privacy-preserving decision-making in healthcare environments. The architecture integrates wearable sensors, edge computing nodes, and cloud services to enable dynamic task orchestration and secure data fusion. For evaluation, a smart healthcare scenario for early anomaly detection (e.g., arrhythmia and fever) was implemented using wearable devices with coordinated edge–cloud analytics. Simulated experiments on synthetic vital sign datasets achieved approximately 98% anomaly detection accuracy and up to 90% reduction in communication overhead compared to cloud-centric solutions. Results also demonstrate enhanced explainability via traceable decisions across DIKWP layers and robust performance under intermittent connectivity. These findings indicate that the DIKWP-driven approach can significantly advance IoT-based healthcare by providing secure, explainable, and adaptive services aligned with clinical objectives and patient-centric care. Self-medication is a subject of global importance. If practiced responsibly, self-medication represents a part of self-care or positive care of an individual or a community in promoting their own health. However, today’s practices of self-medication are often inappropriate and irresponsible, and as such appear all over the world. Inappropriate self-medication can be connected with possible serious health risks and consequences. Therefore, it represents a global health issue. It can even generate additional health problems, which will eventually become a burden to healthcare systems and can induce significant costs, which also raises socioeconomic concerns. Hence, self-medication attracts the attention of researchers and practitioners globally in efforts to clarify the current status and define feasible measures that should be implemented to address this issue. This narrative review aims to give an overview of the situation in the field of self-medication globally, including current practices and attitudes, as well as implications for actions needed to improve this problem. A PubMed/MEDLINE search was conducted for articles published in the period from 1995 up to March 2025 using keywords “self-medication” or “selfmedication” alone or in combinations with terms related to specific subthemes related to self-medication, such as COVID-19, antimicrobials, healthcare professionals, and storing habits of medicines at home. Studies were included if self-medication was their main focus. Publications that only mentioned self-medication in different contexts, but not as their main focus, were excluded. Considering the outcomes of research on self-medication in various contexts, increasing awareness of responsible self-medication through education and informing, together with surveillance of particular medicines and populations, could lead to more appropriate and beneficial self-medication in the future. Information and communication technologies (ICTs) are becoming increasingly important for sustainable rural development through the smart village concept. This study aims to model ICT’s potential for public services management in European rural areas. It identifies ICT applications across rural service domains, analyzes how these technologies address specific rural challenges, and evaluates their benefits, implementation barriers, and future prospects for sustainable rural development. A qualitative content analysis method was applied using purposive sampling to analyze 79 peer-reviewed articles from EBSCO and Elsevier databases (2000–2024). A deductive approach employed predefined categories to systematically classify ICT applications across rural public service domains, with data coded according to technology scope, problems addressed, and implementation challenges. The analysis identified 15 ICT application domains (agriculture, healthcare, education, governance, energy, transport, etc.) and 42 key technology categories (Internet of Things, artificial intelligence, blockchain, cloud computing, digital platforms, mobile applications, etc.). These technologies address four fundamental rural challenges: limited service accessibility, inefficient resource management, demographic pressures, and social exclusion. This study provides the first comprehensive systematic categorization of ICT applications in smart villages, establishing a theoretical framework connecting technology deployment with sustainable development dimensions. Findings demonstrate that successful ICT implementation requires integrated urban–rural cooperation, community-centered approaches, and balanced attention to economic, social, and environmental sustainability. The research identifies persistent challenges, including inadequate infrastructure, limited digital competencies, and high implementation costs, providing actionable insights for policymakers and practitioners developing ICT-enabled rural development strategies. Background/Objectives: Endometriosis is a chronic, estrogen-driven gynecological disorder affecting approximately 10% of reproductive-aged women worldwide, with significant physical, psychosocial, and socioeconomic impacts. Recent research suggests a possible involvement of the gut microbiome in endometriosis disease mechanisms through immune manipulation, estrogen metabolism, and inflammatory networks. This narrative review aims to summarize current evidence on gut microbiota changes in endometriosis patients, explore the mechanisms by which gut dysbiosis contributes to disease progression, and examine epidemiological links between gastrointestinal health and endometriosis risk. Methods: A narrative review was conducted to synthesize available literature on the compositional changes in gut microbiota associated with endometriosis. The review also evaluated studies investigating potential mechanisms and epidemiological patterns connecting gut health with endometriosis development and severity. Results: Alterations in gut microbiota composition were observed in endometriosis patients, suggesting roles in immune dysregulation, estrogen metabolism, and inflammation. Potential gut-oriented interventions, including dietary changes, probiotics, and lifestyle modifications, emerged as promising management options. However, methodological variability and research gaps remain barriers to clinical translation. Conclusions: Integrating gut microbiome research into endometriosis management holds potential for improving early diagnosis, patient outcomes, and healthcare system sustainability. The study emphasizes the need for further research to address existing challenges and to develop public health strategies that incorporate microbiome-based interventions in population-level endometriosis care. Share enables decentralized, peer-to-peer integration by exchanging executable code in our examples written in the LUA programming language. This approach avoids reliance on centralized infrastructures and allows services to discover and interact with each other dynamically through pattern-matching and contract validation. To assess its suitability, we developed an emulator that directly implements the system under test in LUA, allowing us to verify both the structural and behavioral constraints of service interactions. Our results demonstrate that Share is scalable and effective, even in constrained environments, and supports formal correctness via design-by-contract principles. This makes it a promising solution for lightweight, interoperable IoT systems that require flexibility, dynamic configuration, and resilience without centralized control. Full article

Background/Objectives: In late 2019, the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) caused a pandemic called the ‘coronavirus disease 2019’ (COVID-19). After the acute SARS-CoV-2 infection, many individuals (up to 33%) complained of unexplained symptoms involving multiple organ systems and were diagnosed as having Long COVID-19 (LC-19). Currently, LC-19 is inadequately defined, requiring the formation of consistent diagnostic parameters to provide a foundation for ongoing and future studies of epidemiology, risk factors, clinical characteristics, and therapy. LC-19 represents a significant burden on multiple levels. The reduced ability of workers to return to work or compromised work efficiency has led to consequences at national, economic, and societal levels by increasing dependence on community services. On a personal scale, the isolation and helplessness caused by the disease and its subsequent impact on the patient’s mental health and quality of life are incalculable. Methods: In this paper, we used Walker and Avants’ eight-step approach to perform a concept analysis of the term “Long COVID-19” and define its impact across these parameters. Results: Using this methodology, we provide an improved definition of LC-19 by connecting the clinical symptomology with previously under-addressed factors, such as mental, psychological, economic, and social effects. This definition of LC-19 features can help improve diagnostic procedures and help plan relevant healthcare services. Conclusions: LC-19 represents a complex and pressing public health challenge with diverse symptomology, an unpredictable timeline, and complex pathophysiology. This concept analysis serves as a tool for improving LC-19 definition, but it remains a dynamic disease with evolving diagnostic and therapeutic approaches, requiring deeper investigation and understanding of its long-term effects. Background: Antinuclear antibodies (ANAs) serve as crucial biomarkers for diagnosing systemic autoimmune diseases; however, their interpretation can be complex and may not always correlate with clinical symptoms. Methods: A comprehensive narrative review was conducted to evaluate the peer-reviewed literature published between 1961 and 2025. Databases, including PubMed and Scopus, were searched using combinations of controlled vocabulary and free-text terms relating to antinuclear antibodies and their clinical significance. The objective was to gather and synthesize information regarding the diagnostic utility and interpretation of ANA testing in routine medical practice. Discussion: The indirect immunofluorescence assay (IIF) on HEp-2 cells is established as the gold standard for detecting ANAs, facilitating the classification of various fluorescent patterns. While a positive ANA test can suggest autoimmune disorders, the presence and titre must be interpreted alongside clinical findings, as low titres often lack diagnostic significance. Findings indicate that titres higher than 1:160 may provide greater specificity in differentiating true positives from false positives in healthy individuals. The study also emphasizes the relevance of fluorescence patterns, with specific patterns linked to particular diseases, although many do not have strong clinical correlations. Moreover, certain autoantibodies demonstrate high specificity for diseases like systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD). Ultimately, while ANA testing is invaluable for diagnosing connective tissue diseases, healthcare providers must consider its limitations to avoid misdiagnosis and unnecessary treatment. Conclusions: ANA testing is a valuable tool in the diagnosis of connective tissue diseases, but its interpretation must be approached with caution. Clinical context remains crucial when evaluating ANA results to avoid misdiagnosis and overtreatment. This review is about the diagnostic aspects and clinical consequences of ANA testing, as well as highlighting both the diagnostic benefits and the potential limitations of this procedure in everyday clinical practice. The review fills a gap in the literature by integrating the diagnostic and clinical aspects of ANA testing, with a focus on real-world interpretation challenges. Full article

Sexuality and intimacy are essential aspects of the human experience for all people, contributing significantly to physical and emotional connections, well-being, and quality of life. Despite their importance, these topics are frequently overlooked in stroke rehabilitation, especially for those with cognitive and perceptual impairments. Existing research on post-stroke sexual rehabilitation tends to focus on sexual dysfunction and the secondary physical and psychological stroke symptoms, with little attention to cognitive and perceptual impairments. Cognitive deficits, such as decreased memory, generalized attention, and executive function not only can hinder sexual participation but also raise the complex issue of capacity to consent. This paper argues that it is imperative for researchers and healthcare practitioners to address cognitive and perceptual challenges, understand consent laws in their respective regions, and consider the influence of culture and social norms in order to support the sexual rights and well-being of all stroke survivors. Furthermore, this article provides some practical recommendations, from an occupational therapy perspective, that healthcare practitioners can provide to clients and their partners. Full article
