The interfacial transition zone (ITZ) significantly influences the mechanical properties and durability of lightweight aggregate concrete (LWAC), yet existing research on the ITZ in LWAC remains fragmented due to varied characterization techniques, inconsistent definitions of ITZ thickness and porosity, and the absence of standardized performance metrics. This review focuses primarily on structural LWAC produced with artificial and natural lightweight aggregates, with intended applications in high-performance civil engineering structures. This review systematically analyzes the microstructure, composition, and physical properties of the ITZ, including porosity, microhardness, and hydration product distribution. Quantitative data from recent studies are highlighted—for instance, incorporating 3% nano-silica increased ITZ bond strength by 134.12% at 3 days and 108.54% at 28 days, while using 10% metakaolin enhanced 28-day compressive strength by 24.6% and reduced chloride diffusion by 81.9%. The review categorizes current ITZ enhancement strategies such as mineral admixtures, nanomaterials, surface coatings, and aggregate pretreatment methods, evaluating their mechanisms, effectiveness, and limitations. By identifying key trends and research gaps—particularly the lack of predictive models and standardized characterization methods—this review aims to synthesize key findings and identify knowledge gaps to support future material design in LWAC. To investigate the impermeability of foam concrete in various challenging environments, this study evaluates its water resistance by measuring the water contact angle and water absorption. Polyurethane (PU) was used to fabricate polyurethane foam concrete (PFC), enabling a monolithic hydrophobic modification to improve the permeation performance of foam concrete. The study also examines the effects of carbonation and freeze–thaw environments on the permeation resistance of PFC. Graphene oxide (GO), KH-550, and a composite hydrophobic coating (G/S) consisting of GO and KH-550 were employed to enhance the permeation resistance of PFC through surface hydrophobic modification. The functionality of the G/S composite hydrophobic coating was confirmed using energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The results showed the following: (1) The water contact angle of PFC increased by 20.2° compared to that of ordinary foam concrete, indicating that PU-based hydrophobic modification can significantly improve its impermeability. (2) After carbonation, a micro–nano composite structure resembling the surface of a lotus leaf developed on the surface of PFC, further enhancing its impermeability. However, freeze–thaw cycles led to the formation and widening of microcracks in the PFC, which compromised its hydrophobic properties. (3) Surface hydrophobic modifications using GO, KH-550, and the G/S composite coating improved the anti-permeability properties of PFC, with the G/S composite showing the most significant enhancement. (4) GO filled the tiny voids and pores on the surface of the PFC, thereby improving its anti-permeability properties. KH-550 replaced water on the surface of PFC and encapsulated surface particles, orienting its R-groups outward to enhance hydrophobicity. The G/S composite emulsion coating formed a hydrophobic silane layer inside the concrete, which enhanced water resistance by blocking water penetration, reducing microscopic pores in the hydrophobic layer, and improving impermeability characteristics. Traditional cementitious coating materials struggle to meet the performance criteria for protective coatings in complex environments. This study developed a polymer-modified cement-based coating material with polymer, silica fume (SF), and quartz sand (QS) as the principal admixtures. It also investigated the influence of material composition on the coating’s mechanical properties, durability, interfacial bond characteristics with concrete, and the durability enhancement of coated concrete. The results demonstrated that compared with ordinary cementitious coating material (OCCM), the interfacial bonding performance between 3% Styrene Butadiene Rubber Powder (SBR) coating material and concrete was improved by 42%; the frost resistance and sulfate erosion resistance of concrete protected by 6% polyurethane (PU) coating material were improved by 31.5% and 69.6%. The inclusion of polymers reduces the mechanical properties. The re-addition of silica fume can lower the porosity while increasing durability and strength. The coating material, mixed with 12% SF and 6% PU, exhibits mechanical properties not lower than those of OCCM. Meanwhile, the interfacial bonding performance and durability of the coated concrete have been improved by 45% and 48%, respectively. The grey relational analysis indicated that the coating material with the best comprehensive performance is the one mixed with 12% SF + 6% PU, and the grey correlation degree is 0.84. Full article

This work focuses on the design of concrete for the construction of winemaking tanks, as well as coating behaviour and stability of the systems in wine immersion. More specifically, alternative laboratory concrete mixtures were investigated by replacing cement with natural pozzolan and using silicate aggregates and quartz sand as filler in order to obtain self-compacting concrete of strength class C 20/25. The optimal mixture was selected and further tests were carried out on the mechanical properties of permeability, durability and thermal conductivity. Three coatings and plain concrete were tested for their leachability of heavy metals in wine. The results show that the selected composition with 20% cement replacement by natural pozzolan has the desired workability and strength and is comparable to a reference concrete without natural pozzolan. The leachability tests show that heavy metals do not leach out upon contact with wine, but only calcium and potassium oxide, which can be easily addressed by coating or treating the surface of the concrete. Also, the optimum coating did not influence the pH of the wine. Full article

This study investigates the thermal performance of 23 different mortar types, each containing different mixes, properties, and additives. A comprehensive literature review was conducted to collect experimental data on the thermal properties of these mortars, which were then used in a numerical analysis through thermal finite element modeling. The results showed that all mortar types contributed to reducing the internal temperature of structural steel and reinforced concrete elements, with performance primarily influenced by key factors such as the mortar’s thermal conductivity, specific heat capacity, thermal diffusivity, and coating thickness. In particular, the mortar with glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) as a slag substitute and the mortar with expanded perlite replacing sand showed the highest thermal protection and achieved a temperature reduction on the order of 100%. In contrast, mortars containing 30% vermiculite or 15% light expanded polyvinyl chloride (PVC) as a sand substitute showed the lowest thermal performance. Full article

Previous research on geopolymers has not fully established their porosity and its influence on the matrix structure, as well as its relevance to mechanical and durability properties, supporting the potential of this material as a sustainable alternative to traditional construction materials. In this study, three geopolymer mortar (GM) mixtures were prepared: the first was obtained with fly ash (FA) without mechanical grinding (GM_FA), the second with FA that required crushing and sieving through a #200 sieve (GM_FA_200), and the third was a GM with FA that required crushing and sieving through a #325 sieve (GM_FA_325). The main objective was to evaluate the porosity of the geopolymeric paste and the interfacial transition zone (ITZ) between the aggregate and the geopolymerization products. Due to the susceptibility of this area to develop higher porosity, which leads to reduced mechanical properties and durability, it has become a significant focus of investigation in materials such as concrete and mortar. These analyses were carried out using physical adsorption of gases (PAG), and a methodology for image analysis of GM microporosity was implemented using micrographs obtained from a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and processed with the NI Vision Assistant 8.6 software (VA). The results from both image analysis and physical adsorption demonstrated that the GM_FA_325 matrix exhibited 19% less porosity compared to the GM_FA matrix. The results confirmed that GMs are predominantly mesoporous. It was observed that GM_FA_325 has the lowest total porosity, resulting in a denser and more compact microstructure, which is a key factor in its mechanical performance and potential applications as an eco-friendly construction material for coatings and precast elements such as blocks, panels, and similar products. In addition, image analysis using VA is highlighted as an efficient, cost-effective, and complementary technique to PAG, enabling robust results and resource optimization. Full article

The thermal conductivity of steel is high compared to other materials such as concrete or timber. Therefore, fire protection measures are applied to prolong the duration between the onset of fire exposure and the final loss of load-bearing function of a steel structure. The most common passive fire protection measure is the application of intumescent coating (IC), a thin film that expands at elevated temperatures and forms an insulating char layer of lower thermal conductivity. This paper focuses on structural steel beams with IPE open-section profiles protected by a water-based IC and subjected to static and standard fire loading. ANSYS 16.0 is used to simulate heat transfer, with thermal conductivity function described by standard multivariate linear regression analysis, followed by mechanical analysis considering degradation of material mechanical properties at elevated temperatures. Simulations are conducted for all IPE profile sizes, with varying initial degrees of utilisation, beam lengths, and coating thicknesses. Results indicated fire resistance times ranging from 24 to 53.5 min, demonstrating a relatively good level of fire resistance even with the minimal IC thickness. Furthermore, artificial neural networks were developed to predict the fire resistance time of steel members with IC using varying numbers of hidden neurons and subset ratios. The model achieved a predictability level of 99.9% upon evaluation. Full article

This study provides a systematic comparison of three types of phosphate coatings, applied by identical immersion phosphating processes and tested under two different environmental conditions representative of real industrial scenarios. The focus of this study is the investigation of the corrosion behaviour of zinc, magnesium, and manganese phosphate coatings on reinforcing steel in two different corrosion environments: river water and seawater. The phosphate coatings were obtained via the immersion phosphating technique. Various techniques, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), potentiodynamic polarization curve (PDP) testing, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), were used to evaluate the morphology and corrosion resistance of the coatings. The overall corrosion protection performance of the coatings followed the order of Zn phosphate > Mn phosphate > Mg phosphate. The results indicate that the samples with the Zn-phosphated coating showing the highest improvement. This coating showed no major morphological changes and achieved significantly reduced corrosion rates—0.258 µm/year in river water and 3.060 µm/year in seawater—compared to the typical corrosion rate of uncoated steel, which is about 45 µm/year. These findings emphasize the effectiveness of Zn phosphate coatings in mitigating corrosion in both river water and marine conditions. Full article

Guardrail concrete in cold regions frequently suffers from corrosion due to icing and solutions, significantly shortening the service life of the guardrail. This paper proposed a cement-based composite coating for concrete protection. The hydrophobic agent was synthesized using nano-silica, tetraethyl orthosilicate and perfluorodecyltrimethoxysilane and used for coating modification as an additive or by impregnation. Also, a commercial hydrophobic agent was used for comparison. The modified coating was characterized by wettability, mechanical properties, chemical stability and icephobicity tests. The results showed that the coating prepared with the synthetic hydrophobic agent presented a higher contact angle than that prepared with the commercial one during the above tests. Moreover, it featured excellent icephobicity by effectively delaying the time of icing on concrete and reducing the icing mass and ice adhesion strength. In addition, the hydrophobic agent used by impregnation was a better choice for concrete surface protection. Chemical composition and morphology analysis of the coating showed that hydrophobicity and icephobicity were mainly attributed to F-containing functional groups and rough structure with low surface energy. This study provided an application potential of modified cement-based composite coating for anti-/de-icing of guardrail concrete. Full article

Polyurea failures in reinforced concrete tanks, such as swimming pools and sewage treatment plants, require a thorough analysis of the causes of failures during renovation. Urban agglomerations are increasingly relying on these facilities for maintaining city functioning, and the increasing concentration of pollutants in these facilities necessitates urgent repairs due to frequent failures. More thorough analysis should be given to repeated failures on the same object or “twin” objects within a short period, causing high renovation costs and long shutdowns. The causes of failures can be found not only as a result of insufficient knowledge but also in a limited analysis of the entire project from the assumption phase to completion. The article analyzed water and sewage tanks on which failures of applied polyurea coatings occurred many times. The posteriori uses of the risk management analysis with the assessment of the impact and probability of occurrence of the planned activities that failed allows it to be applied a priori and treated as a necessary analysis. For this purpose, in selected repairs, those activities that had the greatest impact on failure and a relatively high probability of occurrence during implementation were distinguished from the entire project. Based on the risk management analysis, it was shown that the basic cause of the failure was the poor knowledge and insufficient experience of the entities performing the repairs, and the errors that occurred could be minimized by conducting good diagnostics of the facility, selecting professional designers and contractors, and constant monitoring of each important activity. Water ingress and penetration of aggressive fluids undermines the integrity of many concrete structures. For this reason, optimal performance of such structures up to their designed life cannot be guaranteed. This study introduces nano silicon as an alternative waterproofing admixture for increasing life span of cementitious materials, due to its non-vulnerability to deterioration, which is common to traditional surface coating solutions. Therefore, nano silicon was characterized using Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FESEM), Energy Dispersion Spectroscopy (EDS), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), and surface Zeta potential. The Central Composite Design (CCD) tool was adopted to plan the experiment and further used to model the relationship between experimental variables and experimental response. The model was found to be nonlinear quadratic based on Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). Also, the validity of the model was evaluated and found to have accurate prediction with mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) of 1.62%. The optimum mix ratio necessary to increase resistance to capillary water absorption was established at a nano silicon dosage of 6.6% by weight of cement and w/c of 0.42. In conclusion, the overall results indicate that resistance to capillary water absorption was increased by 62%. Furthermore, while gas permeability was reduced by 31%, on the other hand, volume of water permeable voids decreased by 10%. Full article

The application of superhydrophobic (SH) coatings in road construction has attracted growing attention due to their potential to improve surface durability, reduce cracking, and enhance skid resistance. Among various materials, SiO2 nanoparticles have emerged as key components in SH coatings by contributing essential surface roughness and hydrophobicity. This review paper analyzes the role of SiO2 nanoparticles in enhancing the water-repellent properties of coatings applied to road surfaces, particularly concrete and asphalt. Emphasis is placed on their influence on road longevity, reduced maintenance, and overall performance under adverse weather conditions. Furthermore, this review compares functionalization techniques for SiO2 using different hydrophobic modifiers, evaluating their efficiency, cost effectiveness, and scalability for large-scale infrastructure. In addition to highlighting recent advancements, this study discusses persistent challenges—including environmental compatibility, mechanical wear, and long-term durability—that must be addressed for practical implementation. By offering a critical assessment of current approaches and future prospects, this short review aims to guide the development of robust, high-performance SH coatings for sustainable road construction. Metaconcrete (MC) is a class of engineered cementitious composites that integrates locally resonant inclusions to filter stress waves. While the dynamic benefits are well established, the effect of resonator content and geometry on static compressive resistance remains unclear. This study develops the first two-dimensional mesoscale finite-element model that explicitly represents steel cores, rubber coatings, and interfacial transition zones to predict the quasi-static behavior of MC. The model is validated against benchmark experiments, reproducing the 56% loss of compressive strength recorded for a 10.6% resonator volume fraction with an error of less than 1%. A parametric analysis covering resonator ratios from 1.5% to 31.8%, diameters from 16.8 mm to 37.4 mm, and coating thicknesses from 1.0 mm to 4.2 mm shows that (i) strength decays exponentially with volumetric content, approaching an asymptote at ≈20% of plain concrete strength; (ii) larger cores with thinner coatings minimize stiffness loss (<10%) while limiting strength reduction to 15–20%; and (iii) material properties of the resonator have a secondary influence (<6%). Two closed-form expressions for estimating MC strength and Young’s modulus (R2 = 0.83 and 0.94, respectively) are proposed to assist with the preliminary design. The model and correlations lay the groundwork for optimizing MC that balances vibration mitigation with structural capacity. Full article

Corrosion Performance and Post-Corrosion Evolution of Tensile Behaviors in Rebar Reinforced Ultra-High Performance Concrete

The application of rebar reinforced ultra-high-performance concrete (R-UHPC) has been increasingly adopted in engineering structures due to its exceptional mechanical performance and durability characteristics. Nevertheless, when subjected to combined saline and stray current conditions, R-UHPC remains vulnerable to severe corrosion degradation. This investigation examined the corrosion performance and tensile behavior evolution of R-UHPC containing 2.0 vol% copper-coated steel fiber content and HRB400 steel rebar with a reinforcement ratio of 3.1%. The accelerated corrosion process was induced through an impressed current method, followed by direct tensile tests at varying exposure periods. The findings revealed that the embedding of rebar in UHPC led to the formation of fiber-to-rebar (F-R) conductive pathways, generating radial cracks besides laminar cracks. The bonding between rebar and UHPC degraded as corrosion progressed, leading to the loss of characteristic multiple-cracking behavior of R-UHPC in tension. Meanwhile, R-UHPC load-bearing capacity, transitioning from gradual to accelerated deterioration phases with prolonged corrosion, aligns with steel fibers temporally. During the initial 4 days of corrosion, the specimens displayed surface-level corrosion features with negligible steel fiber loss, showing less than 4.0% reduction in ultimate bearing capacity. At 8 days of corrosion, the steel fiber decreased by 22.6%, accompanied by an 18.3% reduction in bearing capacity. By 16 days of corrosion, the steel fiber loss reached 41.5%, with a corresponding bearing capacity reduction of 29.1%. During the corrosion process, corrosion cracks and load-bearing degradation in R-UHPC could be indicated by the ultrasonic damage factor. Full article

This paper investigates nine PVA fiber-reinforced cementitious composites with varying fiber content (1–2.5%) and types (oil-coated and non-coated). The experimental compositions utilize locally available cement, high volumes of fly ash, silica fume, PVA fibers, and a superplasticizer, entirely omitting natural aggregates. Key parameters evaluated include bulk density, compressive strength, secant modulus of elasticity, flexural tensile strength, fracture energy, and structural design applicability. The results show that FRCs without natural aggregates achieves significantly lower densities (1500–1720 kg/m3). Compressive strength is influenced by matrix density, with the highest value recorded at 30.98 MPa. The high fly ash content reduces the secant modulus of elasticity, while flexural tensile strength follows a similar pattern to compressive strength. Oil-coated fibers generally lower fracture energy, except for the 1.5% PVA content, where the 2.5% composition performs best. All specimens exhibit tension softening rather than the strain-hardening behavior of ECCs. Structural design equations were developed, though experimental validation is necessary. The 2.5% PVA composition increases the compression zone height by 7% while requiring 2% more reinforcement. As a sustainable alternative to conventional concrete, the composites offer promising mechanical properties and structural viability for construction applications. Full article
