Polypropylene (EPP) concrete offers advantages such as low density and good thermal insulation properties, but its relatively low strength limits its engineering applications. Waste steel fibers (WSFs) obtained during the sorting and processing of machining residues can be incorporated into EPP concrete (EC) to enhance its strength and toughness. Using the volume fractions of EPP and WSF as variables, specimens of EPP concrete (EC) and waste steel fiber-reinforced EPP concrete (WSFREC) were prepared and subjected to cube compressive strength tests, splitting tensile strength tests, and four-point flexural strength tests. The results indicate that EPP particles significantly improve the toughness of concrete but inevitably lead to a considerable reduction in strength. The incorporation of WSF substantially enhanced the splitting tensile strength and flexural strength of EC, with increases of at least 37.7% and 34.5%, respectively, while the improvement in cube compressive strength was relatively lower at only 23.6%. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observations of the interfacial transition zone (ITZ) and WSF surface morphology in WSFREC revealed that the addition of EPP particles introduces more defects in the concrete matrix. However, the inclusion of WSF promotes the formation of abundant hydration products on the fiber surface, mitigating matrix defects, improving the bond between WSF and the concrete matrix, effectively inhibiting crack propagation, and enhancing both the strength and toughness of the concrete. This study looked at the performance requirements of repair materials for concrete structures in cold regions, systematically analyzing the effects of steel fiber dosage (0.7–2.1%), early-strength agent PRIORITY dosage (6–10%), and their coupling effects on the workability, interfacial bond strength, and freeze–thaw resistance of rapid-hardening ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC). Through fluidity testing, bond interface failure analysis, freeze–thaw cycle testing, and pore analysis, the mechanism of steel fibers and early-strength agent on the multi-dimensional performance of fast-hardening UHPC was revealed. The results showed that when the steel fiber dosage exceeded 1.4%, the flowability was significantly reduced, while a PRIORITY dosage of 8% improved the flowability by 20.5% by enhancing the paste lubricity. Single addition of steel fibers decreased the interfacial bond strength, but compound addition of 8% PRIORITY offset the negative impact by optimizing the filling effect of hydration products. Under freeze–thaw cycles, excessive steel fibers (2.1%) exacerbated the mass loss (1.67%), whereas a PRIORITY dosage of 8% increased the retention rate of relative dynamic elastic modulus by 10–15%. Pore analysis shows that the synergistic effect of 1.4% steel fiber and 8% PRIORITY can reduce the number of pores, optimize the pore distribution, and make the structure denser. The study determined that the optimal compound mixing ratio was 1.4% steel fibers and 8% PRIORITY. This combination ensures construction fluidity while significantly improving the interfacial bond durability and freeze–thaw resistance, providing a theoretical basis for the design of concrete repair materials in cold regions. This study introduces a new method for modeling the nonlinear behavior of adhesively bonded composite steel–concrete T-beam systems. The model characterizes the interfacial behavior between the steel beam and the concrete slab using a strain compatibility approach within the framework of linear elasticity. It captures the nonlinear distribution of shear stresses over the entire depth of the composite section, making it applicable to various material combinations. The approach accounts for both continuous and discontinuous bonding conditions at the bonded steel–concrete interface. The analysis focuses on the top flange of the steel section, using a T-beam configuration commonly employed in bridge construction. This configuration stabilizes slab sliding, making the composite beam rigid, strong, and resistant to deformation. The numerical results demonstrate the advantages of the proposed solution over existing steel beam models and highlight key characteristics at the steel–concrete interface. The theoretical predictions are validated through comparison with existing analytical and experimental results, as well as finite element models, confirming the model’s accuracy and offering a deeper understanding of critical design parameters. The comparison shows excellent agreement between analytical predictions and finite element simulations, with discrepancies ranging from 1.7% to 4%. This research contributes to a better understanding of the mechanical behavior at the interface and supports the design of hybrid steel–concrete structures. Full article

Despite the strength and ductility of steel reinforcing bars, their susceptibility to corrosion can limit the long-term durability of reinforced concrete structures. Fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) reinforcing bars made with a thermosetting matrix offer corrosion resistance but cannot be field-bent, which limits flexibility during construction. FRP reinforcing bars made with fiber-reinforced thermoplastic polymers (FRTP) address this limitation; however, their high processing viscosity presents manufacturing challenges. In this study, the Continuous Forming Machine, a novel pultrusion device that uses pre-consolidated fiber-reinforced thermoplastic tapes as feedstock, is described and used to fabricate 12.7 mm nominal diameter thermoplastic composite rebars. Simple bend tests on FRTP rebar that rely on basic equipment are performed to verify its ability to be field-formed. The manual bending technique demonstrated here is practical and straightforward, although it does result in some fiber misalignment. Subsequently, surface deformations are introduced to the rebar to promote mechanical bonding with concrete, and tensile tests of the bars are conducted to determine their mechanical properties. Finally, flexural tests of simply-supported, 6 m long beams reinforced with FRTP rebar are performed to assess their strength and stiffness as well as the practicality of using FRTP rebar. The beam tests demonstrated the prototype FRTP rebar’s potential for reinforcing concrete beams, and the beam load–deformation response and capacity agree well with predictions developed using conventional structural analysis principles. Overall, the results of the research reported indicate that thermoplastic rebars manufactured via the Continuous Forming Machine are a promising alternative to both steel and conventional thermoset composite rebar. However, both the beam and tension test results indicate that improvements in material properties, especially elastic modulus, are necessary to meet the requirements of current FRP rebar specifications. Glass Fiber-Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) bars are becoming increasingly common in structural engineering applications due to their superior material properties, mainly their resistance to corrosion due to their metallic nature in comparison to steel reinforcement and their improved durability in alkaline environments compared to CFRP and BFRP reinforcement. However, GFRP bars also suffer from a few limitations. One of the main issues that affects the performance of GFRP reinforcing bars is their bond with concrete, which may differ from the bond between traditional steel bars and concrete. However, despite the wide attention of researchers, there has not been a critical review of the recent research progress on bond behavior between GFRP bars and concrete. The objective of this paper is to provide an overview of the current state of research on bond in GFRP-reinforced concrete in an attempt to systematize the existing scientific knowledge. The study summarizes experimental investigations that directly measure bond strength and investigates the different factors that influence it. Additionally, an overview of the analytical and empirical models used to simulate bond behavior is then presented. The findings indicate the dependence of the bond on several factors that include bar diameter, bar surface, concrete strength, and embedment length. Additionally, it was concluded that both traditional and more recent bond models do not explicitly account for the effect of different factors, which highlights the need for improved bond models that do not require calibration with experimental tests. Influence of Crossrib Configuration on Bond-Slip Behavior for High-Strength Reinforcement in Concrete

In the present study, the mechanical properties of high-strength steel rebar with different crossrib spacing that affect the bond behavior between steel rebar and concrete is investigated. To reveal the effects of crossrib spacing on the bond behavior of 630 MPa high-strength steel rebar (T63) in concrete, 42 bonding specimens were designed using T63 rebars and T63 rebars with increased crossrib spacing (TB63). The bond properties of two kinds of steel rebar with concrete were investigated by pull-out test and the failure modes, bond strengths, relative slippages, and bond-slip curves were obtained. Based on analysis of bond-slip curves, the applicability of the existing bond-slip constitutive model to describe T63 and TB63 rebars was discussed. It was found that 30–50% increase in crossrib spacing had little effect on the bond failure mode and bond strength of T63 rebar. The bond-slip curves of the two types of bonding specimens were similar and there is a 1.3 to 1.5-fold increase in peak slippage with TB63. The calculation method of critical bond length in Chinese code (GB 50010-2010) is applicable to T63 and TB63 rebars, and the bond-slip characteristics of T63 rebar with different crossrib spacings was reliably described by the bond-slip constitutive model. The research results can be used as the basis for the application of T63 reinforcement and can also be used as a reference for optimizing of rebar ribs outline. Full article

Reinforced concrete structures are prone to the development of microcracks during service. In this study, a composite-modified epoxy potting adhesive was formulated using nano-TiO2, carboxyl-terminated butadiene nitrile liquid rubber (CTBN), and the reactive diluent D-669. The mechanical properties and effectiveness of this composite adhesive in repairing oblique cracks were systematically evaluated and compared with those of single-component-modified epoxy adhesives. Key material parameters influencing the performance of oblique crack repair were identified, and the underlying repair mechanisms were analyzed. Based on these findings, a theoretical formula for calculating the shear-bearing capacity of beams with repaired web reinforcement was proposed. Experimental results demonstrated that compared to single-component-modified epoxy resin, the optimally formulated composite adhesive improved the tensile strength, elongation at break, and bond strength by 4.07–21.16 MPa, 13.28–20.4%, and 1.05–3.79 MPa, respectively, while reducing the viscosity by 48–872 mPa·s. The viscosity of the adhesive was found to play a critical role in determining the repair effectiveness, with toughness enhancing the crack resistance and bond strength contributing to the structural stiffness recovery. The adhesive effectively penetrated the steel–concrete interface, forming a continuous bonding layer that improved energy dissipation and significantly enhanced the load-bearing capacity of the repaired beams. This study investigates the influence of steel fiber content (0~3% by volume) on the workability and mechanical properties of ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) incorporating slag or fly ash. Although UHPC exhibits excellent strength and durability, its brittleness and high cost hinder broader applications. Steel fibers are known to improve mechanical performance and toughness, but their interaction with mineral admixtures remains underexplored. Flowability, compressive strength, flexural behavior, impact resistance, and microstructure were evaluated. Results show that increasing fiber content significantly reduces workability, with fly ash-based mixes showing better flowability than slag-based ones. Mechanical properties improved with higher fiber volume, and an optimal content of 2% achieved the best balance between workability and strength. Impact testing and stress–strain analysis revealed that steel fibers enhance energy absorption and toughness under dynamic loading. SEM observations at 3 days indicated initial bonding between the fibers and matrix, with minor microcracks, suggesting further strength development over time. This work offers a fresh understanding of the combined influence of steel fibers and mineral admixtures in UHPC and supports their effective application in durable and cost-efficient high-performance concrete design. The behavior of the cast-in-place continuously reinforced concrete (CRC) bus pad applied to bus stop pavement in a central bus-only lane was experimentally analyzed under environmental and moving vehicle loads, and the early-age performance of the CRC bus pad was evaluated using experimental data and finite element analysis results. Using various measurement sensors, the concrete slab strain, longitudinal steel bar strains, horizontal and vertical displacements, and crack behavior of the CRC bus pad due to environmental loads were measured, and the dynamic responses of the concrete slab and steel bars due to moving vehicle loads were also measured. Additionally, a method for converting strain gauge measurements of a cracked concrete slab to the strain of an uncracked concrete slab was also proposed. Under environmental loads, the range of stresses acting on the steel bars and the bond between concrete and steel bars were analyzed to be appropriate for ensuring excellent performance of the CRC bus pad. The crack widths and vertical and longitudinal displacements of the CRC bus pad were found to have no effect on the pavement performance. Within the vehicle velocity range used in this experiment, the strains of the slab and steel bars as the vehicle passed through the CRC bus pad were virtually independent of the vehicle velocity and were within a range that did not cause any reduction in pavement performance. This study confirmed that the CRC bus pad has excellent performance and can replace asphalt concrete bus stop pavement or jointed concrete bus pad. Full article

This paper proposes a steel-ECC ordinary concrete composite continuous bridge deck structure to address the cracking problem of simply supported beam bridge deck continuity. Through theoretical and experimental research, a high-performance ECC material was developed. The ECC material has a compressive strength of 57.58 MPa, a tensile strain capacity of 4.44%, and significantly enhanced bending deformation ability. Bonding tests showed that the bond strength of the ECC-reinforcing bar interface reaches 22.84 MPa when the anchorage length is 5d, and the splitting strength of the ECC-concrete interface is 3.58 MPa after 4–5 mm chipping treatment, with clear water moistening being the optimal interface treatment method. Full-scale tests indicated that under 1.5 times the design load, the crack width of the ECC bridge deck continuity structure is ≤0.12 mm, the maximum deflection is only 5.345 mm, and the interface slip is reduced by 42%, achieving a unified control of multiple cracks and coordinated deformation. The research results provide a new material system and interface design standards for seamless bridge design. Full article

Noncorrosive concrete reinforcement, such as polymer fibers, is needed to overcome the current issues caused by corroded steel reinforcements. Fibers made of polypropylene show a low bonding behavior in concrete. Fillers can help to overcome this issue but often lead to reduced mechanical properties. Core-shell fibers, which split the mechanical properties and the bonding behavior between the core and the shell component, could be a solution. This study investigates mono-material and core-shell fibers produced with calcium carbonate and bentonite fillers and compares their behavior in tensile tests, density measurements, contact angle measurements, topography measurements, single fiber pull-out tests, reflected light microscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. The fillers caused an increased drawability, resulting in higher mechanical properties. Further, in the core-shell fibers, the calcium carbonate increased the surface roughness, which led to a better anchoring of the fiber in concrete, which was also visible in the deformation during pull-out observed in reflected light microscopy pictures. The thermogravimetric analysis showed a delay in onset of degradation for fibers containing bentonite. Full article

Geopolymer concrete (GPC) offers reduced carbon emissions and employs industrial by-products such as fly ash and ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS). In this study, the synergistic augmentation of shear carrying capacity in steel-fiber-reinforced rubberized geopolymer concrete (FRGC) incorporating industrial by-products such as fly ash, GGBFS, and recycled rubber for sustainable construction is investigated. The reinforced rubberized geopolymer concrete (RFRGC) mixtures contained 20% rubber crumbs as a partial replacement for fine aggregate, uniform binder, and alkaline activator. The findings revealed that 1.25% steel fiber achieved optimal hardened properties (compressive strength, flexural, and split tensile strength), with 12 M sodium hydroxide and oven curing achieving maximum values. An increase in molarity improved geopolymerization, with denser matrices, while oven curing boosted polymerization, enhancing the bonding between the matrix and the fiber. The effect of steel fiber on the shear carrying capacity of RFRGC beams without stirrups is also discussed in this paper. An increased fiber content led to an increased shear carrying capacity, characterized by an improvement in first crack load and a delayed ultimate failure. These results contribute to sustainable concrete technologies for specifically designed FRGC systems that can balance structural toughness, providing viable alternatives to traditional concrete without compromising strength capacity. In the present study, a programme of experimental investigations was carried out to examine the direct uniaxial tensile (and pull-out) behaviour of plain and fibre-reinforced lightweight aggregate concrete. The lightweight aggregates were recycled from fly ash waste, also known as Pulverised Fuel Ash (PFA), which is a by-product of coal-fired electricity power stations. Steel fibres were used with different aspect ratios and hooked ends with single, double and triple bends corresponding to 3D, 4D and 5D types of DRAMIX steel fibres, respectively. Key parameters such as the concrete compressive strength flck, fibre volume fraction Vf, number of bends nb, embedded length LE and inclination angle ϴf were considered. The fibres were added at volume fractions Vf of 1% and 2% to cover the practical range, and a direct tensile test was carried out using a purpose-built pull-out test developed as part of the present study. Thus, the tensile mechanical properties were established, and a generic constitutive tensile stress–crack width σ-ω model for both plain and fibrous lightweight concrete was created and validated against experimental data from the present study and from previous research found in the literature (including RILEM uniaxial tests) involving different types of lightweight aggregates, concrete strengths and steel fibres. It was concluded that the higher the number of bends nb and the higher the volume fraction Vf and concrete strength flck, the stronger the fibre–matrix interfacial bond and thus the more pronounced the enhancement provided by the fibres to the uniaxial tensile residual strength and ductility in the form of work and fracture energy. A fibre optimisation study was also carried out, and design recommendations are provided. Full article

Steel-fiber-reinforced geopolymer recycled-aggregate concrete (SFGRC) represents a promising low-carbon building material, yet data on its bond behavior remains scarce, limiting its structural application. To study the mechanical properties and bond strength of SFGRC, five groups of different mix proportions were designed. The main variation parameters were the content of recycled aggregate and the volume content of steel fiber. The cube compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, and flexural strength tests of SFGRC were completed. The influence law of different anchorage lengths on the bond strength between steel bars and SFGRC was studied through the central pull-out test. A multi-parameter probability prediction model of bond strength based on Bayesian method was established. The results show that with the increase of the content of recycled aggregate, the compressive strength of the specimen shows a downward trend, but the tension-compression ratio is increased by 18–22% compared to concrete with natural aggregates at equivalent strength grades. The content of steel fiber can significantly improve the mechanical properties of SFGRC. The bond strength between steel bars and SFGRC is 14.82–17.57 MPa, and the ultimate slip is 0.30–0.38 mm. A probability prediction model of ultimate bond strength is established based on 123 sets of bond test data. The mean and covariance of the ratio of the predicted value of the probability model to the test value are 1.14 and 2.61, respectively. The model has high prediction accuracy, and continuity and can reasonably calculate the bond strength between steel bars and SFGRC. The developed Bayesian model provides a highly accurate and reliable tool for predicting SFGRC bond strength, facilitating its safe and optimized design in sustainable construction projects. To investigate the anchorage performance of an innovative assembled joint with large-diameter steel bar grout lapping in a concrete reserved hole, the effects of anchorage length and high-strength grouting material types on the failure mode, load–displacement curve, ultimate bond strength and strain variation were analyzed through the pull-out tests of 15 specimens. On this basis, the calculation formulae of critical and ultimate anchorage length were established and the applicability was verified, and then the recommended value of minimum anchorage length was provided. The results showed that the failure modes included splitting-steel bar pull-out failure and UHPC-concrete interface failure. With the increase in anchorage length, the bond strength showed a trend of increasing first and then decreasing. Increasing the grouting material strength can effectively improve the bond performance. When the anchored steel bar is HRB400 with a diameter not less than 20 mm, the recommended minimum anchorage length is 15.0d~18.3d. When the grouting material strength is larger than or equal to 100 MPa, the anchorage length should not be less than 15.0d. Full article
