Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) is a critical technology for robot intelligence. Compared to cameras, Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) sensors achieve higher accuracy and stability in indoor environments. However, LiDAR can only capture the geometric structure of the environment, and LiDAR-based SLAM often fails in scenarios with insufficient geometric features or highly similar structures. Furthermore, low-cost mechanical LiDARs, constrained by sparse point cloud density, are particularly prone to odometry drift along the Z-axis, especially in environments such as tunnels or long corridors. To address the localization issues in such scenarios, we propose a forward-enhanced SLAM algorithm. Utilizing a 16-line LiDAR and a monocular camera, we construct a dense colored point cloud input and apply an efficient multi-modal feature extraction algorithm based on centroid distance to extract a set of feature points with significant geometric and color features. These points are then optimized in the back end based on constraints from points, lines, and planes. We compare our method with several classic SLAM algorithms in terms of feature extraction, localization, and elevation constraint. Experimental results demonstrate that our method achieves high-precision real-time operation and exhibits excellent adaptability to indoor environments with similar structures. Full article

Light detection and ranging (LiDAR) provides three-dimensional environmental information that is critical for maintaining the safety and reliability of autonomous driving systems. However, dust accumulation on the LiDAR window can cause detection errors and degrade performance. This study determined the optimal spray conditions for accumulating dust to evaluate LiDAR sensor cleaning performance. A primary optimization experiment using spray pressure, spray speed, spray distance, and the number of sprays as variables showed that spray pressure and number of sprays had the most significant influence on the kinetic energy and distribution of dust particles. Notably, the interaction between spray distance and number of sprays—related to curvature effects—was identified as a key variable increasing process sensitivity. A supplementary experiment, which added spray angle as a variable, indicated that while spray pressure remained the most significant factor, spray angle and number of sprays had an indirect influence through interaction terms. Both experiments used the same response variable (point cloud data) interactions to stepwise analyze particle transfer and spatial diffusion. The resulting optimal conditions offer a standard basis for evaluating LiDAR cleaning performance and may help improve cleaning efficiency and maintenance strategies. Full article

Aiming to address the problems of asynchronous acquisition time of multiple sensors in the crop phenotype acquisition system and high cost of the acquisition equipment, this paper developed a low-cost crop phenotype synchronous acquisition system based on the PTP synchronization protocol, realizing the synchronous acquisition of three types of crop data: visible light images, thermal infrared images, and laser point clouds. The paper innovatively proposed the Difference Structural Similarity Index Measure (DSSIM) index, combined with statistical indicators (average point number difference, average coordinate error), distribution characteristic indicators (Charm distance), and Hausdorff distance to characterize the stability of the system. After 72 consecutive hours of synchronization testing on the timing boards, it was verified that the root mean square error of the synchronization time for each timing board reached the ns level. The synchronous trigger acquisition time for crop parameters under time synchronization was controlled at the microsecond level. Using pepper as the crop sample, 133 consecutive acquisitions were conducted. The acquisition success rate for the three phenotypic data types of pepper samples was 100%, with a DSSIM of approximately 0.96. The average point number difference and average coordinate error were both about 3%, while the Charm distance and Hausdorff distance were only 1.14 mm and 5 mm. This system can provide hardware support for multi-parameter acquisition and data registration in the fast mobile crop phenotype platform, laying a reliable data foundation for crop growth monitoring, intelligent yield analysis, and prediction. Over three decades of research has been undertaken on point cloud registration algorithms, resulting in mature theoretical frameworks and methodologies. However, among the numerous registration techniques used, the impact of point cloud scanning quality on registration outcomes has rarely been addressed. In most engineering and industrial measurement applications, the accuracy and density of LiDAR point clouds are highly dependent on laser scanners, leading to significant variability that critically affects registration quality. Key factors influencing point cloud accuracy include scanning distance, incidence angle, and the surface characteristics of the target. Notably, in short-range scanning scenarios, incidence angle emerges as the dominant error source. Building on this insight, this study systematically investigates the relationship between scanning incidence angles and point cloud quality. We propose an incident-angle-dependent weighting function for point cloud observations, and further develop an improved weighted Iterative Closest Point (ICP) registration algorithm. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves approximately 30% higher registration accuracy compared to traditional ICP algorithms and a 10% improvement over Faro SCENE’s proprietary solution. Hydrogen is a potential key component of a carbon-neutral energy carrier and an input to marine industrial processes. This study examines the consequences of coupled hydrogen release and marine environmental factors during floating photovoltaic hydrogen production (FPHP) system failures. A validated three-dimensional numerical model of FPHP comprehensively characterizes hydrogen leakage dynamics under varied rupture diameters (25, 50, 100 mm), transient release duration, dispersion patterns, and wind intensity effects (0–20 m/s sea-level velocities) on hydrogen–air vapor clouds. FLACS-generated data establish the concentration–dispersion distance relationship, with numerical validation confirming predictive accuracy for hydrogen storage tank failures. The results indicate that the wind velocity and rupture size significantly influence the explosion risk; 100 mm ruptures elevate the explosion risk, producing vapor clouds that are 40–65% larger than 25 mm and 50 mm cases. Meanwhile, increased wind velocities (>10 m/s) accelerate hydrogen dilution, reducing the high-concentration cloud volume by 70–84%. Hydrogen jet orientation governs the spatial overpressure distribution in unconfined spaces, leading to considerable shockwave consequence variability. Photovoltaic modules and inverters of FPHP demonstrate maximum vulnerability to overpressure effects; these key findings can be used in the design of offshore platform safety. This study reveals fundamental accident characteristics for FPHP reliability assessment and provides critical insights for safety reinforcement strategies in maritime hydrogen applications. To overcome the limitations of current train positioning systems, including low positioning accuracy and heavy reliance on track transponders or GNSS signals, this paper proposes a novel LiDAR-inertial and visual landmark fusion framework. Firstly, an IMU preintegration factor considering the Earth’s rotation and a LiDAR-inertial odometry factor accounting for degenerate states are constructed to adapt to railway train operating environments. Subsequently, a lightweight network based on YOLO improvement is used for recognizing reflective kilometer posts, while PaddleOCR extracts numerical codes. High-precision vertex coordinates of kilometer posts are obtained by jointly using LiDAR point cloud and an image detection box. Next, a kilometer post factor is constructed, and multi-source information is optimized within a factor graph framework. Finally, onboard experiments conducted on real railway vehicles demonstrate high-precision landmark detection at 35 FPS with 94.8% average precision. The proposed method delivers robust positioning within 5 m RMSE accuracy for high-speed, long-distance train travel, establishing a novel framework for intelligent railway development. Full article

The charge structure and lightning activities during the development stage of a thunderstorm with a hail-falling process in Datong County of Qinghai Province on 16 August 2014 were studied by using a multi-station observation network composed of a very-high-frequency, three-dimensional, lightning-radiation-source location system and broadband electric field. The research results show that two discharge regions appeared during the development stage of the thunderstorm. The charge structure was all a negative dipolar polarity in two discharge regions; however, the heights of the charge regions were different. The positive-charge region at a height of 2–3.5 km corresponds to −1–−10 °C and the negative-charge region at a height of 3.5–5 km corresponds to −11–−21 °C in one discharge region; the positive-charge region at a height of 4–5 km corresponds to −15–−21 °C and the negative-charge region at a height of 5–6 km corresponds to −21–−29 °C in another region. The charge regions with the same polarity at different heights in the two discharge regions gradually connected with the occurrence of the hail-falling process during the development stage of the thunderstorm, and the overall height of the charge regions decreased. All the intracloud lightning flashes that occurred in the thunderstorm were of inverted polarity discharge, and the horizontal transmission distance of the discharge channel was short, all within 10 km. The negative intracloud lightning flash, negative cloud-to-ground lightning flash, and positive cloud-to-ground lightning flash generated during the thunderstorm process accounted for 83%, 16%, and 1% of the total number of lightning flashes, respectively. Negative cloud-to-ground lightning flashes mainly occurred more frequently in the early phase of the thunderstorm development stage. As the thunderstorm developed, the frequency of intracloud lightning flashes became greater than that of negative cloud-to-ground lightning flashes, and finally far exceeded it. The frequency of lightning flashes decreases sharply and the intensity of thunderstorms decreases during the hail-falling period. Full article

Point cloud denoising is essential for improving 3D data quality, yet traditional K-means methods relying on Euclidean distance struggle with non-uniform noise. This paper proposes a K-means algorithm leveraging Total Bregman Divergence (TBD) to better model geometric structures on manifolds, enhancing robustness against noise. Specifically, TBDs—Total Logarithm, Exponential, and Inverse Divergences—are defined on symmetric positive-definite matrices, each tailored to capture distinct local geometries. Theoretical analysis demonstrates the bounded sensitivity of TBD-induced means to outliers via influence functions, while anisotropy indices quantify structural variations. Numerical experiments validate the method’s superiority over Euclidean-based approaches, showing effective noise separation and improved stability. This work bridges geometric insights with practical clustering, offering a robust framework for point cloud preprocessing in vision and robotics applications. Full article

Data over sound (DoS) is an established technique that has experienced a resurgence in recent years, finding applications in areas such as contactless payments, device pairing, authentication, presence detection, toys, and offline data transfer. This study introduces CardiaWhisper, a system that extends the DoS concept to the medical domain by using a medical data-over-sound (MDoS) framework. CardiaWhisper integrates wearable biomedical sensors with home care systems, edge or IoT gateways, and telemedical networks or cloud platforms. Using a transmitter device, vital signs such as ECG (electrocardiogram) signals, PPG (photoplethysmogram) signals, RR (respiratory rate), and ACC (acceleration/movement) are sensed, conditioned, encoded, and acoustically transmitted to a nearby receiver—typically a smartphone, tablet, or other gadget—and can be further relayed to edge and cloud infrastructures. As a case study, this paper presents the real-time transmission and processing of ECG signals. The transmitter integrates an ECG sensing module, an encoder (either a PLL-based FM modulator chip or a microcontroller), and a sound emitter in the form of a standard piezoelectric speaker. The receiver, in the form of a mobile phone, tablet, or desktop computer, captures the acoustic signal via its built-in microphone and executes software routines to decode the data. It then enables a range of control and visualization functions for both local and remote users. Emphasis is placed on describing the system architecture and its key components, as well as the software methodologies used for signal decoding on the receiver side, where several algorithms are implemented using open-source, platform-independent technologies, such as JavaScript, HTML, and CSS. While the main focus is on the transmission of analog data, digital data transmission is also illustrated. The CardiaWhisper system is evaluated across several performance parameters, including functionality, complexity, speed, noise immunity, power consumption, range, and cost-efficiency. Quantitative measurements of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) were performed in various realistic indoor scenarios, including different distances, obstacles, and noise environments. Preliminary results are presented, along with a discussion of design challenges, limitations, and feasible applications. Our experience demonstrates that CardiaWhisper provides a low-power, eco-friendly alternative to traditional RF or Bluetooth-based medical wearables in various applications. Full article

This study addresses collision detection in the unmanned loading of ore from load-haul-dump (LHD) machines into mining trucks in underground metal mines. Such environments present challenges like heavy dust, confined spaces, sensor occlusions, and poor lighting. This work identifies two primary collision risks and proposes corresponding detection strategies. First, for collisions between the bucket and tunnel walls, LiDAR is used to collect 3D point cloud data. The point cloud is processed through filtering, downsampling, clustering, and segmentation to isolate the bucket and tunnel wall. A KD-tree algorithm is then used to compute distances to assess collision risk. Second, for collisions between the bucket and the mining truck, a kinematic model of the LHD’s working device is established using the Denavit–Hartenberg (DH) method. Combined with inclination sensor data and geometric parameters, a formula is derived to calculate the pose of the bucket’s tip. Key points from the bucket and truck are then extracted to perform collision detection using the oriented bounding box (OBB) and the separating axis theorem (SAT). Simulation results confirm that the derived pose estimation formula yields a maximum error of 0.0252 m, and both collision detection algorithms demonstrate robust performance. Full article

Precise monitoring of vegetative growth is essential for assessing crop responses to environmental changes. Conventional methods of geometric characterization of plants such as RGB imaging, multispectral sensing, and manual measurements often lack precision or scalability for growth monitoring of rice. LiDAR offers high-resolution, non-destructive 3D canopy characterization, yet applications in rice cultivation across different growth stages remain underexplored, while LiDAR has shown success in other crops such as vineyards. This study addresses that gap by using LiDAR for geometric characterization of rice plants at early, middle, and late growth stages. The objective of this study was to characterize rice plant geometry such as plant height, canopy volume, row distance, and plant spacing using the proximal LiDAR sensing technique at three different growth stages. A commercial LiDAR sensor (model: VPL−16, Velodyne Lidar, San Jose, CA, USA) mounted on a wheeled aluminum frame for data collection, preprocessing, visualization, and geometric feature characterization using a commercial software solution, Python (version 3.11.5), and a custom algorithm. Manual measurements compared with the LiDAR 3D point cloud data measurements, demonstrating high precision in estimating plant geometric characteristics. LiDAR-estimated plant height, canopy volume, row distance, and spacing were 0.5 ± 0.1 m, 0.7 ± 0.05 m3, 0.3 ± 0.00 m, and 0.2 ± 0.001 m at the early stage; 0.93 ± 0.13 m, 1.30 ± 0.12 m3, 0.32 ± 0.01 m, and 0.19 ± 0.01 m at the middle stage; and 0.99 ± 0.06 m, 1.25 ± 0.13 m3, 0.38 ± 0.03 m, and 0.10 ± 0.01 m at the late growth stage. These measurements closely matched manual observations across three stages. RMSE values ranged from 0.01 to 0.06 m and r2 values ranged from 0.86 to 0.98 across parameters, confirming the high accuracy and reliability of proximal LiDAR sensing under field conditions. Although precision was achieved across growth stages, complex canopy structures under field conditions posed segmentation challenges. Further advances in point cloud filtering and classification are required to reliably capture such variability. Full article

This study presents a critical evaluation of image-based 3D reconstruction techniques for small archaeological artifacts, focusing on a quantitative comparison between Neural Radiance Fields (NeRF), its recent Gaussian Splatting (GS) variant, and traditional Structure-from-Motion (SfM) photogrammetry. The research targets artifacts smaller than 5 cm, characterized by complex geometries and reflective surfaces that pose challenges for conventional recording methods. To address the limitations of traditional methods without resorting to the high costs associated with laser scanning, this study explores NeRF and GS as cost-effective and efficient alternatives. A comprehensive experimental framework was established, incorporating ground-truth data obtained using a metrological articulated arm and a rigorous quantitative evaluation based on root mean square (RMS) error, Chamfer distance, and point cloud density. The results indicate that while NeRF outperforms GS in terms of geometric fidelity, both techniques still exhibit lower accuracy compared to SfM, particularly in preserving fine geometric details. Nonetheless, NeRF demonstrates strong potential for rapid, high-quality 3D documentation suitable for visualization and dissemination purposes in cultural heritage. These findings highlight both the current capabilities and limitations of neural rendering techniques for archaeological documentation and suggest promising future research directions combining AI-based models with traditional photogrammetric pipelines. Point clouds acquired by mobile laser scanners (MLS) are widely used for generating as-built building information models (BIM), particularly in indoor construction environments and existing buildings. While MLS offers fast and efficient scanning through SLAM technology, its accuracy and precision remains lower than that of terrestrial laser scanners (TLS). This study investigates the potential to improve MLS-based as-built BIM accuracy by analyzing and utilizing error distribution patterns inherent in MLS point clouds. Based on the assumption that each MLS device exhibits consistent and unique error distribution patterns, an experiment was conducted using three MLS devices and TLS-derived reference data. The analysis employed iterative closest point (ICP) registration and cloud-to-mesh (C2M) distance measurements on mock-ups with closed shapes. The results revealed that error patterns were stable across scans and could be leveraged as correction factors. In other words, the results indicate that when using MLS for as-built BIM generation, robust fitting methods have limitations in obtaining realistic object dimensions, as they do not account for the unique error patterns present in MLS point clouds. The proposed method provides a simple and repeatable approach for enhancing MLS accuracy, contributing to improved dimensional reliability in MLS-driven BIM applications. Full article

Seedlings of the ecologically important, critically endangered tree Ocotea monteverdensisis experience high mortality in the Monteverde, Costa Rica, cloud forests at the onset of the wet season, yet there are no studies suggesting the disease etiology. Here, healthy and diseased plant root and bulk soils were analyzed for various carbon and nitrogen (N) metrics and respiration levels, and DNA sequence-based bacterial and fungal community compositions. All nitrogen metric levels were greater in diseased vs. healthy plant root soils, which could enhance pathogen growth and pathogenic mechanisms. Greater DNA percentages from several potential pathogens were found in diseased vs. healthy plant root soils, suggesting this disease may be associated with a root pathogen. The DNA of the fungus Mycosphaerella was at greater levels in diseased vs. healthy plant root soils than other potential pathogens. Mycosphaerella causes similar diseases in other plants, including coffee, after onset of the wet season. The O. monteverdensis disease also occurs in seedlings planted within or near former coffee plantations at wet season onset. Distance-based linear model analyses indicated that NO3 levels best predicted the pattern of fungal pathogens in the soils, and Mycosphaerella and Tremella best predicted the patterns of the different N metrics in the soils, supporting their possible roles in this disease. Vessel detection technology based on marine remote sensing imagery is of great importance. However, it often faces challenges, such as small vessel targets, cloud occlusion, insufficient data volume, and severely imbalanced class distribution in datasets. These issues result in conventional models failing to meet the accuracy requirements for practical applications. In this paper, we first construct a novel remote sensing vessel image dataset that includes various complex scenarios and enhance the data volume and diversity through data augmentation techniques. Secondly, we address the class imbalance between foreground (small vessels) and background in remote sensing imagery from two perspectives: the sensitivity of IoU metrics to small object localization errors and the innovative design of a cost-sensitive loss function. Specifically, at the dataset level, we select vessel targets appearing in the original dataset as templates and randomly copy–paste several instances onto arbitrary positions. This enriches the diversity of target samples per image and mitigates the impact of data imbalance on the detection task. At the algorithm level, we introduce the Normalized Wasserstein Distance (NWD) to compute the similarity between bounding boxes. This enhances the importance of small target information during training and strengthens the model’s cost-sensitive learning capabilities. Ablation studies reveal that detection performance is optimal when the weight assigned to the NWD metric in the model’s loss function matches the overall proportion of small objects in the dataset. Comparative experiments show that the proposed NWD-YOLO achieves Precision, Recall, and AP50 scores of 0.967, 0.958, and 0.971, respectively, meeting the accuracy requirements of real-world applications.
