This study examines how beliefs about the causes of climate change relate to emotions, perceptions of its effects, and willingness to engage in collective action among residents of the Valparaíso Region in Chile, a territory particularly vulnerable to this phenomenon. A survey was conducted with 809 individuals using stratified probabilistic sampling. Analysis of variance revealed significant differences among those who attribute climate change to human, mixed, or natural causes. The results show that individuals who believe in the anthropogenic origin of climate change report higher levels of negative emotions, anxiety, perceived impacts, and willingness to participate in both direct and institutional collective actions. Moreover, these individuals perceive greater negative effects of climate change on their surroundings and daily lives. In contrast, those who attribute the phenomenon to natural causes show a lower predisposition to act and a lower risk perception. The study concludes that causal attribution of climate change significantly influences people’s emotional and behavioral responses, highlighting the importance of strengthening climate education and communication based on scientific evidence as key tools for fostering civic engagement in the face of the environmental crisis. The findings contribute to sustainability by strengthening environmental education, participatory governance, and collective action in vulnerable contexts. Full article

Climate change presents major challenges to agriculture, especially in economically underdeveloped regions. In these areas, farmers often lack access to resources and timely information, which limits their ability to respond effectively to drought and threatens agricultural sustainability. This study uses survey data from farmers in underdeveloped regions of China to examine the association between their ability to acquire information and their drought response behaviors. The results indicate that better information acquisition ability is significantly correlated with more effective and scientifically informed decision-making in drought adaptation strategies. To explore the underlying mechanism, we introduce value perception—that is, farmers’ beliefs about the usefulness and benefits of drought adaptation strategies—as a mediating variable. A mechanism model is constructed to test how information acquisition ability relates to behavior indirectly through this perception. We apply a threshold regression model to identify potential nonlinear associations, finding that the relationship between information acquisition ability and drought response behaviors becomes stronger once a certain threshold is surpassed. Additionally, we employ the Item Response Theory (IRT) model to measure the intensity and quality of farmers’ adaptation behaviors more accurately. These findings provide theoretical insights and empirical evidence for enhancing agricultural resilience, while acknowledging that causality cannot be definitively established due to the cross-sectional nature of the data. The study also offers useful guidance for policymakers seeking to strengthen farmers’ access to information, improve value recognition of adaptive actions, and promote sustainable agricultural development in underdeveloped areas. Climate scientists, systems theorists, and policymakers increasingly suggest that global sustainability challenges stem from dysfunctional worldviews and values that drive individual and collective behaviors, undermining both human flourishing and planetary health. Recognizing that paradigmatic shifts in values and worldviews can arise from transformative experiences, this study employed Integral Inquiry in a mixed-methods design to examine the nature of the relationship between such experiences and engagement with sustainability. A sample of 145 adults was recruited based on self-identification of having undergone a life-changing experience and demonstrated evidence of transformative growth and integration. In the qualitative phase, 73 participants completed an open-text survey detailing their perspectives on sustainability and their related practices and behaviors. Ten individuals from this subset were interviewed to explore the depth and dimensions of their engagement with sustainability. Using Constructivist Grounded Theory analysis, three tentative themes emerged: intraconnection, personal equilibrium, and defining social change. Whilst the study was exploratory in nature, the analysis indicated that transformative experiences seemed to foster a profound felt sense of intraconnection—a deep awareness of interconnectedness with all life. This awareness appeared to naturally clarify participants’ values and beliefs, aligning their actions toward sustainability. Moreover, participants emphasized the importance of cultivating personal equilibrium—a state of inner balance and congruence in daily choices—as a foundation for meaningful social and environmental change. This study tentatively highlights the role transformative experiences can play in bringing about more pro-ecological behavior, and it underscores the need for further research into how such experiences can be more readily integrated to support global sustainability efforts. Addressing climate change requires deeper insight into the psychological drivers of pro-environmental behavior. This study investigates how personality traits, climate-related emotions, and demographic factors can predict sustainable consumption and climate action participation using a Bayesian regression approach. Drawing from the HEXACO personality model and key emotional predictors—Climate Change Worry (CCW) and environmental empathy (EE)—we analyzed data from 604 adults in Greece to assess both private and public climate-related behaviors. This research is novel in its integrative approach, combining dispositional traits and affective states within a Bayesian analytical framework to simultaneously predict both sustainable consumption and climate action. Bayesian model testing highlighted education as the most powerful and reliable predictor of sustainable consumption, with increasing levels—namely Doctoral education—linked to more environmentally responsible action. CCW produced small but reliable effects, supporting hypotheses that moderate emotional concern will lead to sustainable behavior when linked to efficacy belief. The majority of HEXACO traits, e.g., Honesty–Humility and Conscientiousness, produced limited predictive power. This indicates in this case that structural and emotional considerations were stronger than dispositional personality traits. For climate action involvement, Bayesian logistic models found no considerable evidence of any predictor, corroborating the perspective that public participation in high effort action is most likely to rely on contextual enablers instead of internal sentiments or attributes. A significant interaction effect between education and gender also indicated that the sustainability effect of education is moderated by sociocultural identity. Methodologically, this research demonstrates the strengths of Bayesian analysis in sustainability science to make sensitive inference and model comparison possible. The results highlight the importance of affect-related structural variables in behavioral models and have applied implications for theory-informed and targeted climate education and communication interventions to enable different populations to act sustainably. Climate change is one of the most pressing issues on the public policy agenda. Employing data from rounds 8 and 10 of the European Social Survey, this paper examines the relationship between the perception of Europeans towards climate change and the limitation of energy consumption. An ordered logit model shows that socio-demographic characteristics are strongly related to attitudes towards climate change: female, more educated, and left-leaning respondents display, on average, higher levels of worry and personal responsibility for addressing climate change. However, the relationship between these predictors with greater support for energy reduction measures is non-trivial. Through our unique dataset, the study investigates the evolution of attitudes towards private energy consumption reduction over time. Although beliefs are becoming more positive across Europe, personal responsibility to address climate change seems to play an especially pivotal role in Eastern countries. Policy implications are discussed in light of these results. Full article

Scientific disinformation has emerged as a critical challenge at the interface of science and society. This paper examines how false or misleading scientific content proliferates across both social media and traditional media and evaluates strategies to counteract its spread. We conducted a comprehensive literature review of research on scientific misinformation across disciplines and regions, with particular focus on climate change and public health as exemplars. Our findings indicate that social media algorithms and user dynamics can amplify false scientific claims, as seen in case studies of viral misinformation campaigns on vaccines and climate change. Traditional media, meanwhile, are not immune to spreading inaccuracies—journalistic practices such as sensationalism or “false balance” in reporting have at times distorted scientific facts, impacting public understanding. We review efforts to fight disinformation, including technological tools for detection, the application of inoculation theory and prebunking techniques, and collaborative approaches that bridge scientists and journalists. To empower individuals, we propose practical guidelines for critically evaluating scientific information sources and emphasize the importance of digital and scientific literacy. Finally, we discuss methods to quantify the prevalence and impact of scientific disinformation—ranging from social network analysis to surveys of public belief—and compare trends across regions and scientific domains. Our results underscore that combating scientific disinformation requires an interdisciplinary, multi-pronged approach, combining improvements in science communication, education, and policy. We conducted a scoping review of 85 open-access studies focused on climate-related misinformation and disinformation, selected through a systematic screening process based on PRISMA criteria. This approach was chosen to address the lack of comprehensive mappings that synthesize key themes and identify research gaps in this fast-growing field. The analysis classified the literature into 17 thematic clusters, highlighting key trends, gaps, and emerging challenges in the field. Our results reveal a strong dominance of studies centered on social media amplification, political denialism, and cognitive inoculation strategies, while underlining a lack of research on fact-checking mechanisms and non-Western contexts. We conclude with recommendations for strengthening the resilience of both the public and information ecosystems against the spread of false scientific claims. Full article

This review paper examines two underutilized yet transformative drivers in addressing the climate crisis: (1) the role of cultural belief systems in fostering large-scale behavioral shifts toward sustainability, and (2) the use of participatory artificial intelligence (AI) methods to mitigate natural disaster risks, such as flooding. Despite their potential, both areas remain largely untapped. The first driver stems from persistent inertia in behavioral change, prompting the 2023 IPCC Report to call for an ‘inner transition’—a cultural shift in which deeply held values shape socio-ecological behavior, encouraging individuals to move away from business-as-usual lifestyles. However, the mechanisms behind such a transition remain unclear, and empirical support for this approach is still emerging. The second driver highlights the untapped potential of advanced computational techniques in developing intelligent solutions for worsening ecological crises. AI development is often expert-driven, disconnected from societal needs and lived realities. To bridge this gap, inclusive technology co-design—engaging all societal groups, especially those most affected by climate change—is crucial. Additionally, effective mechanisms for networking, amplifying, and scaling these efforts are essential. This paper proposes an integrated, multi-method framework that unites both drivers, offering a novel approach to accelerating progress in climate action. Full article

Climate change will create significant challenges to agriculture. The effects on livestock productivity and crop production are highly dependent on weather conditions with consequences for food security. If agriculture is to remain a viable industry and to maintain future food security, the adaptations and the ideal timeframes for their implementation to mitigate against climate change impacts will be essential knowledge. This study aims to show how farms will be affected and will need to adapt to climate change, based on a holistic examination of the entire farming process. A modified Bayesian belief network (BBN) was used to investigate climate change impacts on livestock, crops, soil, water use, disease, and pesticide use through the use of 48 indicators (comprising climate, agricultural, and environmental). The seasonal impact of climate change on all aspects of farming was investigated for three different climate forcing scenarios (RCPs 2.6, 4.5, and 8.5) for four timeframes (2030, 2050, 2080, and 2099). The results suggest that heat stress and disease in both livestock and crops will require adaptations (e.g., shelter infrastructure being built, new crops, or cultivators grown). Pest intensity is expected to rise, leading to increased pesticide use and greater damage to crops and livestock. Higher temperatures will likely cause increased drought and irrigation needs, while increasing rain intensity might lead to winter flooding. Soil quality maintenance will rely increasingly on fertilisers, with significant decreases in quality if unsustainable. Crop yield will be dependent on new crops or cultivators that can cope with a changing climate being successful and market access; failure to do so could lead to substantial decrease, in food security. Impacts are more significant from 2080 onwards, with the severity of impacts dependent on season. Full article

This study challenges the commonly held belief that typhoons universally improve air quality by dispersing pollutants, offering new insights into their complex effects on PM10 concentrations. Through a comprehensive analysis of long-term data (2001–2021) from seven major South Korean cities, we demonstrate that typhoons can lead to significant increases in PM10 concentrations, particularly before and after their passage, under specific meteorological conditions. Contrary to the prevailing assumption, PM10 levels often rise before typhoons due to atmospheric stagnation, and after typhoons due to subsidence and long-range pollutant transport. Our results indicate that the post-typhoon period is particularly prone to high-PM10 events, with PM10 concentrations increasing by 84.5% in Incheon, 60.8% in Busan, and 62.3% in Gwangju. A case study of Typhoon MITAK revealed that pre-typhoon atmospheric conditions contributed to PM10 concentrations exceeding 81 μg/m3 in Seoul, a level classified as ‘unhealthy’ by Korean air quality standards. These findings challenge existing perceptions and provide essential insights into the complex relationship between typhoons and air pollution. The study underscores the importance of understanding the nuanced dynamics of typhoon-induced air pollution and its implications for air quality management, particularly in the context of ongoing climate change and urbanization. Moreover, the integration of real-time monitoring data into predictive air quality models could enhance the ability to mitigate the adverse effects of typhoon-induced air pollution in vulnerable regions. The main objective of this study was to investigate European consumers’ intentions to purchase cosmetics and detergents with green ingredients made from recycled CO2. Aiming to better understand both moral and practical criteria of consumers’ intentions, a combination of the Values-Beliefs-Norms and the Theory of Planned Behaviour models served as the basis of this study’s theoretical framework. The combination was extended with risk perception about global warming, scepticism and media influence. Online interviews were conducted with stratified samples based on gender and age distributions in France, Germany, Greece and Spain. Structural equation modelling and moderation analyses were employed to analyse the data. The results indicated that consumption intentions are generated by consumers’ biospheric values and a sequence of risk perception, awareness of consequences, and ascription of responsibility while they are directly determined (in declining order) by perceived behavioural control, personal norms, attitudes and subjective norms. Subjective norms indicated additional indirect impacts on consumption intentions through personal norms and ascription of responsibility. Moderation also indicated that the relationship between perceived behavioural control and consumption intentions is stronger in consumers, who are less sceptical towards ecological claims on packaging, while the relationship between personal norms and consumption intentions is stronger in consumers, who are less influenced by advertisements. Theoretical, managerial and social implications were derived from the results. Full article

This study aims to assess the factors influencing homeowner behaviour regarding climate-adaptive renovations. This study extends the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) by integrating additional factors such as inherent homeowner qualities (IHQs) and building attributes (BAs) to better capture climate-adaptive renovation decisions. Different configurations for the impacts of these additional factors were tested, and their correlation to homeowner attitudes (ATs) and homeowner intentions (INTs) was studied. The results indicate that attitudes related to beliefs about climate change impacts are the strongest predictors of climate-adaptive behaviour. It was also found that IHQ was a strong determinant of homeowner attitudes and had a strong indirect impact on homeowner intentions to perform climate-adaptive renovations. Given the significant role of cognitive attitudes in shaping climate-adaptive behaviours, policy interventions should focus on fostering more climate-conscious attitudes. Targeted public campaigns can highlight localised climate risks and the benefits of adaptive renovations. Sharing narratives from regions affected by severe climate events, potentially in the form of targeted workshop sessions, could make climate risks more tangible, especially for those without direct exposure, fostering greater public engagement and adaptive actions. Climate change has continued to cause severe coastal flooding, erosion, and storm surge in the northeastern U.S. region. Compounding the coastal storm challenge, this region also experienced multiple 1-in-100-, 1-in-200-, and 1-in-500-year rainfall events in 2024. In recent years, community-based flood risk management has become an important component for generating locally viable mitigation strategies to build environmental sustainability. At the heart of this community engagement paradigm is flood risk communication, which aims to bring together community stakeholders to strengthen their social resilience to collaborate in generating flood risk management solutions. Extant research has rarely examined the direct connection between theory-driven risk communication factors and community-based flood risk management. To better understand the role of risk communication in facilitating participatory flood risk management planning, this study integrated risk communication constructs with the relevant Health Belief Model components to propose and test a conceptual framework. Specifically, this study conducted a survey with 302 residents of a coastal community highly vulnerable to sea level rise, storm surge, and year-round flooding in the coastal region of northeastern U.S. Study results suggested that flood information exposure could drive greater perceived flood risk severity and mitigation barriers, in addition to furthering flood risk information-seeking behavior and affiliated community-engaged flood risk communication. Community-engaged communication was positively linked to perceived social efficacy beliefs in tackling flood risk management, aside from being linked to perceived flood risk mitigation response efficacy. Both perceived social efficacy and response efficacy in flood risk management positively predicted interest in participatory flood risk management planning. Full article

Climate action represents the most comprehensive of the 2015 United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in that climate change impacts all other goals. Urban overpopulation is a primary cause, as energy consumption is a significant source of carbon dioxide emissions directing climate change. The population increase origin is attributable to the agricultural/urban developments that became geographically widespread approximately 6000 years ago. Simultaneously, religious belief stressed multiple children, with women obligated to produce them. This female duty created gender inequality and reduced the health and well-being of women, as pregnancy is a noted risk factor for decreased lifetime health. Regardless of the detrimental risk to their health and well-being, the gender inequality, and the adverse effects of birthing multiple children regarding climate action, women today continue to feel obliged to reproduce appropriately. This burden requires change to meet the three sustainable development goals of good health and well-being (SDG 3), gender equality (SDG 5), and climate action (SDG 13). An author-developed mindfulness-based psychoanalytic narrative research method presents a means for promoting such change based on a qualitative narrative analysis of the responses of several participants regarding its success in clarifying the values of these women in overcoming career-related burnout. Climate change is a global issue with diverse regional impacts threatening the survival of both human and non-human species. While the academic discourse on climate change predominantly focuses on macro-level studies, it often neglects the vital role of local environmental practices and the perspectives of affected communities. This paper presents insights from ethnographic fieldwork conducted among the Bishnoi community in Khejarli Village, Jodhpur, in the Thar Desert of India. This study utilizes participant observations, semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions, and case studies to explore local environmental knowledge and practices aimed at mitigating and adapting to climate change. Findings reveal the Bishnois’ deep-rooted relationship with nature and the pivotal role of religious beliefs in shaping their conservation efforts. Since the 15th century, the Bishnois have been committed to protecting local species, such as plants and animals, which has been crucial for sustaining the desert ecosystem and combating climate change. Moreover, their religious teachings and principles have helped conserve values among younger generations, ensuring a lasting culture of environmental stewardship. This paper supports integrating micro-level ethnographic studies into global climate change dialogues, urging the recognition of local knowledge as an essential resource for addressing contemporary environmental challenges. During the last decade, the discussions about climate change have evolved beyond technical and technological debates, and politicians and religious leaders have started to acknowledge the complexity of the matter more frequently than ever. These discussions aptly underlined the inadequacy of the offered technical solutions to problems due to climate change, which are bound to social and psychological barriers and evaluated through the lenses of existing culture, values, and beliefs, which can hinder appropriate responses. The current study problematises this puzzle by exploring variations in ideological positions, religious affiliations, and religiosity levels and their interactions with climate anxiety. The findings indicate that differing religious affiliations and religiosity levels are robust predictors of variations in climate anxiety. Moreover, their interactions and ideological positions also effectively explain the variations in perceptions related to climate anxiety. These findings provide critical insights into how religious and ideological dimensions influence responses to climate issues, offering practical implications for policymakers. Full article
