Consumers are increasingly exposed to environmental claims on food products. These claims often lack scientific validation and there are different methodologies that can be used for grounding these claims, which can lead to misleading results. The European Union’s (EU) Environmental Footprint methodology excludes the aggregation of environmental impacts, including damage to human health. This fact reduces transparency and limits the consumers’ ability to make information-based sustainable choices. This study aims to address this issue by calculating aggregated impacts on human health via life cycle assessment (LCA) in the agriculture and food-production sectors. In the study the IMPACT World+ method was used, including trustworthy databases and proper functional unit definition. The assessment encompassed three types of vegetables, four types of fruit, and four types of ready meals. The study also attempts to assess the impact of different farming systems (organic and conventional) on human health. Two standardised functional units, i.e., the unit based on product weight and product energy value were considered for each group of products. Our findings showed significant differences in results when different functional units were used. Additionally, no conclusion could be drawn regarding which farming system is more sustainable. Therefore, it is essential that the regulator clearly defines the criteria for selecting the appropriate functional unit in LCA within the agriculture and food-production sectors. In the absence of these criteria, results should be presented for all alternatives. Although not required by EU regulation, the authors suggest that companies should nevertheless disclose information regarding the environmental impact of agriculture and food production on human health, as this is important for consumers. Digital twin technology is emerging as a core technology that models physical objects or systems in a digital space and links real-time data to accurately reflect the state and behavior of the real world. For the effective operation of such digital twins, high-performance visualization methods that support an intuitive understanding of the vast amounts of data collected from sensors and enable rapid decision-making are essential. The proposed system is designed as a balanced 3D monitoring solution that prioritizes intuitive, real-time state observation. Conventional 3D-simulation-based systems, while offering high physical fidelity, are often unsuitable for real-time monitoring due to their significant computational cost. Conversely, 2D-based systems are useful for detailed analysis but struggle to provide an intuitive, holistic understanding of multiple assets within a spatial context. This study introduces a visualization approach that bridges this gap. By leveraging sensor data, our method generates a physically plausible representation 3D CAD models, enabling at-a-glance comprehension in a visual format reminiscent of simulation analysis, without claiming equivalent physical accuracy. The proposed method includes GPU-accelerated interpolation, the user-selectable application of geodesic and Euclidean distance calculations, the automatic resolution of CAD model connectivity issues, the integration of Physically Based Rendering (PBR), and enhanced data interpretability through ramp shading. The proposed system was implemented in the Unity3D environment. Through various experiments, it was confirmed that the system maintained high real-time performance, achieving tens to hundreds of Frames Per Second (FPS), even with complex 3D models and numerous sensor data. Moreover, the application of geodesic distance yielded a more intuitive representation of surface-based phenomena, while PBR integration significantly enhanced visual realism, thereby enabling the more effective analysis and utilization of sensor data in digital twin environments. The aim of this study is to analyze the factors that influence consumer referents or reference points and their interaction during the decision-making process, along with the principles of prospect theory in the metaverse with market and retail examples. We conducted an integrative literature review. Consumers’ preference for reference points is determined and structured during the buying process, which can be affected by potential signals and biased decisions. To guide consumers’ shopping experiences and purchasing behavior in the most effective way, marketers and organizations must investigate the factors that influence consumer reference points beyond physical or tangible attributes. Businesses must be adaptable and adapt their strategies to changing consumer preferences based on reference points. Our findings can advance discussions about how reference points are being used in the market by using consumer decision-making claims in the discursive construction of the metaverse. By comprehending this, developers can create better experiences and assist users in navigating virtual risks. Our research aids us in better comprehending the influence of referents on consumer purchasing decisions in the marketing communications field. Numerous opportunities for academic research into consumer reference points have arisen, in which individuals as digital consumers are influenced by the same biases and heuristics that guide their behavior in reality. The most frequently used laboratory animals for studies on adipose tissue properties and obesity are rodents. However, there are significant differences in the types of visceral fat depots between rodents and humans, including fat depots in the heart area. The large human fat depot of greatest interest in cardiac research is the epicardial adipose tissue (EAT). Its properties are widely investigated, because the EAT lies directly on the heart’s surface and can easily affect myocardial physiology. The major fat depot in rodents‘ chest—pericardial fat—is located on the ventral surface of the parietal lamina of the pericardium and is often incorrectly referred to as the EAT. Further confusion arises from reports claiming that rodents are entirely devoid of the EAT. We decided to verify adipose tissues in the heart area of 16 male Sprague Dawley rats under physiological conditions and in obesity. The animals in the NFD group (n = 8) were fed with a standard diet while these in the HFD group (n = 8) were fed with a high-fat diet (31% fat) starting from 4 weeks after birth. When the animals reached 12 weeks, the presence of fat deposits was verified. Additionally, their blood was collected to characterize carbohydrate and lipid metabolism changes, adipokine profile alterations, and their systemic inflammation status. The obesogenic diet caused significant disturbances in their carbohydrate and lipid metabolism, as well as hyperleptinemia. A high-fat diet primarily promoted the accumulation of pericardial fat, which was absent in the NFD rats and observed in 6 out of the 8 HFD animals. In both groups, adipocytes were also found directly on the hearts’ surfaces (EAT), albeit in very small numbers and limited to the atrioventricular groove on the dorsal side of the hearts. These adipocytes were dispersed among the vessels, making quantitative assessment and separation difficult, however, macroscopic evaluation revealed no noticeable differences in its extent. In conclusion, although rats are not entirely devoid of the EAT, their suitability for studying the properties of the EAT appears to be considerably limited. Full article

Mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) have been previously linked with improved cognition and reduced stress, anxiety, and depression. Yet, traditional MBIs are lengthy and resource intensive. Brief and online MBIs represent a bridge into more extensive practice—but questions of whether these protocols improve cognition and affect remain. The present experiment used a randomized longitudinal design to assess the effects of a 31-day, 15 min daily mindfulness program compared to a podcast control on a battery of cognitive and self-report measures in a sample of university students. Results indicated that, over the course of the study, the MBI group found their intervention less challenging, more enjoyable, more relaxing, more engaging, and more useful compared to the podcast control group. MBI participants also increased in state and dispositional mindfulness and state metacognition following the intervention relative to the Podcast group. However, both groups scored comparably on all cognitive and affective post-intervention measures, with equivalence testing suggesting that the observed effect sizes in the present study were significantly smaller than in some previously reported effects. Taken together, the results suggest that while brief online MBIs can elicit near transfer to proximal domains (e.g., mindfulness, metacognition), more work is needed to make strong claims that these MBIs elicit far transfer to cognitive and affective domains. Focusing on the legend of Phaedra and Hippolytus as developed in Euripides and Seneca and especially in Racine’s Phèdre and taking into account as well its further development in works by Camillo Boito, Luchino Visconti, and Yukio Mishima, I make the following arguments: (1) Contrary to many theologians and philosophers of love, a pathological form of love that issues in murder and suicide should not be regarded as unworthy of serious attention. Racine’s tragedy provides a catharsis for universal experiences of unrequited love and jealousy, a major human phenomenon. (2) Contrary to Paul Valéry, Phèdre’s love cannot be called merely animal, since the analytical insight she develops into her morbid passion carries tremendous moral force and lies at the origin of the European psychological novel, as launched by Madame de La Fayette a year later. (3) Contrary to François Mauriac, even if she is a heroine of desire or concupiscence rather than of “true love” (in contrast to the relatively innocent affections of Hippolyte and Aricie), the incredible beauty of her language resists such an easy categorization. (4) Study of concrete presentations of “love” in literature confirms that the meaning and use of this word is marked by an irreducible pluralism. Philosophical and theological analysis of love has to come to terms with this. (5) The role of a work of art, in crystallizing archetypical emotions and situations in a way that carries authority, is to provide the middle ground between the abstractions of philosophy on the one hand and the uncontrollable diversity of the empirical on the other. Even psychologies or sociologies of love, which claim to be close to the concrete data, need to be anchored in and corrected by the special concrete vision that only great literature can bring. Statistical data demonstrate a concurrent rise in smoking prevalence and mental disorders, such as depression and anxiety, which may be attributed to contemporary lifestyle factors, including social media and recent global events. This indicates a potential correlation between these trends, as individuals with mental disorders may engage in smoking as a form of self-medication to alleviate anxiety. However, smoking is harmful and increases the risk of many diseases. Therefore, smoking cessation strategies are increasingly being considered. Nicotine is a naturally produced alkaloid in plants that makes smoking so addictive. Unfortunately, the public’s lack of understanding of the effects of nicotine leads to misleading claims in the public and media about its biological effects. Thus, current narrative literature review is focused on the examination of the biological effects of organic nicotine from various angles, considering the psychological aspects of addiction and the immune system. Analysis of recent data showed that nicotine not only causes addiction but also has therapeutic benefits in certain diseases (depression, anxiety, schizophrenia) and has anti-inflammatory properties (autoimmunity, neurodegenerative diseases), and a deeper understanding and a broader approach to its effects is needed. LK-99, with chemical formula Pb10−xCux(PO4)6O, was recently reported to be a room-temperature superconductor. While this claim has met with little support in a flurry of ensuing work, a variety of calculations (mostly based on density-functional theory) have demonstrated that the system possesses some unusual characteristics in the electronic structure, in particular flat bands. We have established previously that within DFT, the system is insulating with many characteristics resembling the classic cuprates, provided the structure is not constrained to the P3(143) symmetry nominally assigned to it. Here we describe the basic electronic structure of LK-99 within self-consistent many-body perturbative approach, quasiparticle self-consistent GW (QSGW) approximation and their diagrammatic extensions. QSGW predicts that pristine LK-99 is indeed a Mott/charge transfer insulator, with a bandgap gap in excess of 3 eV, whether or not constrained to the P3(143) symmetry. When Pb9Cu(PO4)6O is hole-doped, the valence bands modify only slightly, and a hole pocket appears. However, two solutions emerge: a high-moment solution with the Cu local moment aligned parallel to neighbors, and a low-moment solution with Cu aligned antiparallel to its environment. In the electron-doped case the conduction band structure changes significantly: states of mostly Pb character merge with the formerly dispersionless Cu d state, and high-spin and low spin solutions once again appear. Thus we conclude that with suitable doping, the ground state of the system is not adequately described by a band picture, and that strong correlations are likely. Irrespective of whether this system class hosts superconductivity or not, the transition of Pb10(PO4)6O from being a band insulator to Pb9Cu(PO4)6O, a Mott insulator, and multi-determinantal nature of doped Mott physics make this an extremely interesting case-study for strongly correlated many-body physics. E-commerce live streaming in China has become a major retail channel, yet hosts often employ subtle phonetic or semantic “morphs” to evade moderation and make unsubstantiated claims, posing risks to consumers. To address this, we study the Live Auditory Morph Resolution (LiveAMR) task, which restores morphed speech transcriptions to their true forms. Building on prior text-based morph resolution, we propose an LLM-enhanced training framework that mines three types of explanation knowledge—predefined morph-type labels, LLM-generated reference corrections, and natural-language rationales constrained for clarity and comprehensiveness—from a frozen large language model. These annotations are concatenated with the original morphed sentence and used to fine-tune a lightweight T5 model under a standard cross-entropy objective. In experiments on two test sets (in-domain and out-of-domain), our method achieves substantial gains over baselines, improving F0.5 by up to 7 pp in-domain (to 0.943) and 5 pp out-of-domain (to 0.799) compared to a strong T5 baseline. These results demonstrate that structured LLM-derived signals can be mined without fine-tuning the LLM itself and injected into small models to yield efficient, accurate morph resolution. Despite advances in technique and technology, the chainsaw is still the most widely used tool in forestry. For this reason, equipment manufacturers are developing new technical solutions to make working with a chainsaw as easy and efficient as possible. Some examples of this are the development of professional battery-powered chainsaws and the development of new types of saw chains by the leading industry manufacturers. The aim of this paper was to determine the efficiency of the Stihl MSA 300C battery-powered chainsaw equipped with two different types of professional saw chains (Stihl Rapid Super and Stihl Rapid Hexa) when sawing round wood. The efficiency was determined based on measurements of electricity consumption, sawing speed, sawn wood cross-section, and wood chips and dust mass produced during sawing. The second aim was to determine whether there is a difference in measured vibration magnitude between the two tested saw chains. Fresh-fallen European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) log, approx. 25 cm diameter without pronounced ellipticity, was used for sampling. Results indicate that although the saw chain manufacturer claims the new type of saw chain (Stihl Rapid Hexa) enables greater efficiency of the chainsaw, this was not the case. Results point to a 37% increase in mean sawing time, as well as a 23% increase in energy consumption when using the Rapid Hexa chain, with statistically significant difference (p ≤ 0.05). It should be emphasized that the manual operation of the chainsaw does not allow for a reliable determination of differences in energy consumption caused by changes in saw chain geometry. The advantages of this saw chain are that it is easier to maintain (sharpen) and significantly less wood chips and dust are produced. The measured vibration magnitude shows a statistically significant difference (p ≤ 0.05), i.e., a lower vibration total value on the front handle when using the Stihl Rapid Hexa chain. Full article

Non-operating room anesthesia (NORA) is a rapidly growing domain for anesthesia professionals due to advances in procedural technology and increased emphasis on patient comfort. The majority of these procedures are conducted under monitored anesthesia care (MAC) where patients receive varying levels of sedation. Analysis of the Anesthesia Closed Claims database suggests that adverse respiratory events continue to be the main cause of morbidity and mortality in patients undergoing NORA procedures. Most NORA claims occurred under MAC, with oversedation leading to respiratory depression coupled with inadequate monitoring making up the majority of claims. The American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) has released standards of pre-anesthesia, intraoperative monitoring, and post-anesthesia care, which apply to all anesthetizing locations including NORA. The ASA has also made recommendations in a statement on NORA to promote patient safety. Evidence suggests that patient characteristics, monitoring tools, physical constraints, and team familiarity play a role in the risk for adverse respiratory events. Future studies are required to further understand the challenges specific to NORA locations. Full article

Rapidly decarbonizing the electricity grid is crucial for achieving net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by mid-century and mitigating climate change impacts. Hydropower facilities can directly support grid decarbonization; however, like all energy systems, they emit GHGs throughout their lifecycle, with reservoirs being an important source. Further research is urgently needed to improve the accounting and mitigation of hydropower reservoir GHG emissions to ensure that this technology is accurately considered in decarbonization policies and to allow project owners and energy buyers to make credible emission claims regarding this energy source. To this end, this paper reviews over seven dozen studies and emerging research to synthesize the current state of the science on reservoir GHG emission pathways as well as advancements in emission measurement tools to identify areas where further research is needed. This paper presents a research roadmap for government agencies, research institutions, and funding organizations covering four action areas: understanding and reducing uncertainties in reservoir GHG estimation and associated publicly accessible estimation tools; reducing the technical and economic barriers for reservoir managers to use GHG estimation tools; setting common standards to enable consistent monitoring, allocation, and reporting of reservoir GHG emissions; and supporting work on reservoir GHG emission mitigation strategies, including watershed-scale strategies. Progress in these areas will enable robust accounting of hydropower reservoir GHG emissions and targeted mitigation efforts to advance grid decarbonization. Full article

Knowledge extraction and sharing is one of the biggest challenges organizations face to ensure successful and long-lasting knowledge repositories. The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) commissioned a web-based knowledge management program called Communicate Lessons, Exchange Advice, Record (CLEAR) for end-users to promote employee-generated innovation and to institutionalize organizational knowledge. Reusing knowledge from an improperly managed database is problematic and potentially causes substantial financial loss and reduced productivity for an organization. Poorly managed databases can hinder effective knowledge dissemination across the organization. Data-driven dashboards offer a promising solution by facilitating evidence-driven decision-making through increased information access to disseminate, understand and interpret datasets. This paper describes an effort to create data visualizations in Tableau for CLEAR’s gatekeeper to monitor content within the knowledge repository. Through the three web-based strategic dashboards relating to lessons learned and best practices, innovation culture index, and website analytics, the information displays will aid in disseminating useful information to facilitate decision-making and execute appropriate time-critical interventions. Particular emphasis is placed on utility-related issues, as data from the NCDOT indicate that approximately 90% of projects involving utility claims experienced one or two such incidents. These claims contributed to an average increase in project costs of approximately 2.4% and schedule delays averaging 70 days. The data dashboards provide key insights into all 14 NCDOT divisions, supporting the gatekeeper in effectively managing the CLEAR program, especially relating to project performance, cost savings, and schedule improvements. The chronological analysis of the CLEAR program trends demonstrates sustained progress, validating the effectiveness of the dashboard framework. Ultimately, these data dashboards will promote organizational innovation in the long run by encouraging end-user participation in the CLEAR program. Full article

Characterization of HFE 7500 Refrigerant Suspensions Containing Oxide and Nitride Nanoparticles: Thermal, Rheological, and Electrokinetic Insights

Nanofluids—engineered suspensions of nanometer-sized particles—have attracted significant attention due to their reportedly enhanced thermal properties, making them promising candidates for advanced heat transfer applications. However, despite extensive studies, uncertainties remain regarding the magnitude and origin of these effects, limiting their practical implementation. To address this, we present a comprehensive study on nanofluid formulations based on the commercial refrigerant HFE-7500, incorporating surfactant-stabilized dispersions of several metal oxide and nitride nanoparticles. We measured key physicochemical properties, including zeta potential, particle size, viscosity, and thermal conductivity. Our results show that while the nanofluids exhibited high stability, their particle sizes in suspension were significantly larger than the primary nanoparticle sizes measured by TEM. Notably, alumina-based suspensions demonstrated the greatest enhancement, exhibiting approximately 10–15% increases in thermal conductivity as a function of volume percentage. These surpassed the 5–10% improvements observed with other metal oxides, an effect that may be linked to their comparatively larger particle sizes. However, the observed enhancements were lower than some previously reported values that claimed anomalously high thermal conductivity increases. Furthermore, steady shear viscosity increased with particle concentration, showing enhancements of 10–20%, which suggests a potential trade-off for practical implementation. Our findings refine the understanding of nanofluid behavior in refrigerants and establish a foundation for optimizing their performance in thermal management applications. However, viscosity increases must be carefully considered when designing next-generation nanofluids for real-world use. Full article

The way literature scholars read now has been under scrutiny for over a decade. The same long decade has seen an explosion in experimental literatures that make reading in the literary-critical sense a matter for poets: a poet’s hybrid, whose disturbance of genre is claimed by publishers as the writing’s main attraction. This paper explores the disturbance of literary criticism in the work of contemporary North American poets, Maureen N. McLane and Lisa Robertson. Asking how these poets read now, the paper argues that an exchange of powers between analysis and performance reorients criticism toward a hybrid ‘dramatic’ mode, activist in its sensibilities and committed to a redistribution of agencies by style and form. Far from deepening the divide between creative and academic criticism, these poets model the significance of composition, prosody, and voice for critical writing of all kinds. Full article
