Background/Objectives: Family caregiving for people living with dementia is central to ageing and long-term care, but it is not only a practical arrangement but also a relational and structurally shaped experience. Care may be grounded in affection, responsibility, and connection, while still becoming difficult to refuse, share, or limit. Although caregiver burden is well documented, less is known about how former caregivers retrospectively appraise the caregiving role after active care has ended. This study examined role captivity among former family caregivers, focusing on constrained choice, subjective role engulfment, perceived support, and caregiver wellbeing. Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional mixed-methods survey was conducted among 180 former family caregivers of people living with dementia in Northern Italy. Quantitative analyses examined associations between role-captivity-related indicators and retrospective caregiving outcomes. Open-ended responses were analysed using theory-informed qualitative content analysis. Results: Constrained choice at caregiving uptake was reported by 22.2% of participants, and 56.1% met the criterion for subjective role engulfment. Overall, 60.0% would provide family care again, while only 28.3% would be willing to receive family care themselves. One in five reported caregiving-related health problems. In multivariable models, constrained choice was associated with lower willingness to provide care again (OR = 0.27, p = 0.002) and less positive retrospective appraisal (OR = 0.35, p = 0.036). Subjective role engulfment was independently associated with less positive appraisal (OR = 0.36, p = 0.008), while perceived support was associated with positive appraisal (OR = 6.31, p < 0.001) and perceived processing (OR = 2.68, p = 0.013). Qualitative findings showed that caregiving was often remembered as meaningful and relationally important, yet difficult to refuse, progressively all-consuming, and shaped by structural and informational barriers. Conclusions: Retrospective appraisal of family dementia caregiving depends not only on care demands, but also on whether care was experienced as chosen, bounded, shared, and supported. Role captivity helps identify when relationally meaningful care becomes difficult to sustain and highlights the need for caregiver-sensitive dementia care that protects agency, role boundaries, and access to timely support. Public transport systems in rapidly urbanizing Gulf cities confront the simultaneous challenge of decreasing emissions while guaranteeing equal access for riders, many of whom rely on transit for economic reasons. Sustainable smart city development necessitates bus services that are both efficient and sensitive to rider needs in adverse weather conditions. This study develops and evaluates a wellbeing-focused planning framework for Dubai’s bus network, filling gaps in prior research that primarily focuses on temperate, choice-based transport environments. The study uses Generalized Structured Component Analysis (GSCA) to analyze how Service Efficiency and Accessibility (SEA), Physical Environment and Passenger Comfort (PEPC), and Service Operations and Assurance (SOA) impact overall journey wellbeing, based on a cross-sectional survey of 491 riders collected from July–August 2024. Data were collected during peak summer conditions, and the analysis followed a structured workflow that operationalized the proposed constructs into measurable indicators and estimated both the measurement and structural components of the GSCA model to find planning relevant wellbeing drivers. The model shows a strong fit (FIT = 0.684; GFI = 0.991; SRMR = 0.056), with SEA (β = 0.504) having the greatest influence on wellbeing, followed by SOA (β = 0.344) and PEPC (β = 0.070). Affordability and information quality are key SEA metrics, highlighting the necessity of economic access and multilingual, real-time communication. Overall, the findings indicate that wellbeing is most strongly shaped by accessibility-oriented service experience attributes particularly affordability and information quality followed by operational assurance, while comfort-related conditions remain significant under high heat exposure during waiting and transfers. On the other hand, the research indicates that operational reliability helps mitigate environmental discomfort in hyper-arid areas. The report suggests focusing on equal prices, digital information accessibility, dependable operations, and climate-adaptive infrastructure to promote sustainable mobility and long-term public transport use. For millennia, horses have been crucial to human survival and development, providing transportation, labor, and even status. Currently, interest in human relationships with other animals has grown significantly, in the context of promoting the well-being and essential health of both species. This entry aims to explore the possibilities of human–horse relationships, from early interactions to strong bonds. The literature collected here highlights the complexity of this relationship, with special attention to the various biological and social factors involved. The text compares historical practices with current perspectives, examining how these changes affect the relationship between humans and horses. It examines how connecting with horses potentially benefits both humans and horses, underlining the importance of recognizing horse behavior and noting that our assumptions may not reflect their true needs. The gut microbiota plays a crucial role in the health and well-being of primates. This study applied 16S rRNA high-throughput sequencing technology, aiming to investigate the differences in gut microbiota composition and function between captive ring-tailed lemurs (Lemur catta) in different zoos across the north–south demarcation line in China. Results revealed significant differences in gut microbiota composition between northern and southern groups. Alpha diversity indices were higher in the southern group (p < 0.05), while beta diversity analysis showed distinct clustering based on geographic location (p < 0.001). Bacteroidetes were more abundant in the northern group (49.22% vs. 28.44%), while Firmicutes predominated in the southern group (59.10% vs. 32.78%). Functional prediction analysis indicated higher levels of membrane transport and lipid metabolism pathways in the southern group, suggesting differences in nutrient absorption and energy metabolism. These findings suggest that geographic location and associated environmental factors significantly influence the gut microbiota of captive ring-tailed lemurs, even under similar dietary and husbandry conditions. Our study provides insights into the impact of geographic location on gut microbiota in captive primates, highlighting the importance of considering regional factors in zoo animal management and informing future strategies for optimizing the care and conservation of captive primates across different geographic regions. The daily behavioral patterns of giraffes reflect their health status and well-being. Behaviors such as licking, walking, standing, and eating are not only essential components of giraffes’ routine activities but also serve as potential indicators of their mental and physiological conditions. This is particularly relevant in captive environments such as zoos, where certain repetitive behaviors may signal underlying well-being concerns. Therefore, developing an efficient and accurate automated behavior detection system is of great importance for scientific management and welfare improvement. This study proposes a multi-behavior automatic detection method for giraffes based on YOLO11-Pose and the spatial-adaptive two-stream network (SATSN). Firstly, YOLO11-Pose is employed to detect giraffes and estimate the keypoints of their mouths. Observation-Centric SORT (OC-SORT) is then used to track individual giraffes across frames, ensuring temporal identity consistency based on the keypoint positions estimated by YOLO11-Pose. In the SATSN, we propose a region-of-interest extraction strategy for licking behavior to extract local motion features and perform daily behavior classification. In this network, the original 3D ResNet backbone in the slow pathway is replaced with a video transformer encoder to enhance global spatiotemporal modeling, while a Temporal Attention (TA) module is embedded in the fast pathway to improve the representation of fast motion features. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed method, a giraffe behavior dataset consisting of 420 video clips (10 s per clip) was constructed, with 336 clips used for training and 84 for validation. Experimental results show that for the detection tasks of licking, walking, standing, and eating behaviors, the proposed method achieves a mean average precision (mAP) of 93.99%. This demonstrates the strong detection performance and generalization capability of the approach, providing robust support for automated multi-behavior detection and well-being assessment of giraffes. It also lays a technical foundation for building intelligent behavioral monitoring systems in zoos. Full article

Assessing the well-being of captive brown bears is essential for responsible species management and meeting European and national animal care standards outside their natural habitats. The present study aims to assess the welfare of captive brown bears in Bulgaria, considering environmental parameters, husbandry procedures, and the psychological and physical condition of the animals. The study was conducted on 28 brown bears in 11 zoos in Bulgaria and 19 bears in Bear Sanctuary Belitsa. A specific questionnaire and interviews were conducted with zoo managers and keepers. The welfare of the bears was evaluated based on their living conditions, husbandry, and physical and psychological well-being. The Nature and Animal Protection Center in Dobrich received the highest rating for the welfare of two brown bears among the zoos in the study. The study identified annual veterinary check-ups and enrichment programmes as areas needing improvement. Full article

The gut microbiome plays a crucial role in the health and physiology of tigers (Panthera tigris), influencing digestion, immune function, and overall well-being. While numerous studies have characterized the gut microbiota of domestic carnivores and some wild felids, comparative analyses across different tiger subspecies under varying environmental contexts remain limited. In this exploratory study, we investigated the gut microbiome diversity and composition of 15 captive tigers, including both Siberian (P. tigris altaica) and Bengal (P. tigris tigris) subspecies, housed in two different regions in Korea. Using 16S rRNA gene sequencing of fecal samples, we analyzed microbial diversity across multiple taxonomic levels. Preliminary analyses revealed significant differences in microbial composition between geographic locations, whereas sex-based differences appeared minimal. Alpha and beta diversity metrics demonstrated substantial inter-individual variability, likely influenced by regional and environmental factors. Given the small sample size and the confounding between subspecies and housing location, the findings should be regarded as preliminary and not generalized beyond this specific cohort. Nevertheless, these insights highlight the potential utility of gut microbiome profiling for health monitoring and management in captive-tiger populations. Future research incorporating larger, more diverse cohorts will be essential to validate these trends and clarify the roles of diet, health status, and enrichment in shaping the gut microbiota. Phycobiliproteins (PBPs), captivating water-soluble proteins found in cyanobacteria, red algae, and cryptophytes, continue to fascinate researchers and industries due to their unique properties and multifaceted applications. These proteins consist of chromophores called phycobilins (PBs), covalently linked to specific protein subunits. Major phycobiliproteins include phycocyanin (PC), allophycocyanin (APC), and phycoerythrin (PE), each distinguished by distinct absorption and emission spectra. Beyond their colorful properties, PBs exhibit a broad spectrum of biological activities, including antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, and antidiabetic effects, making them valuable for pharmaceutical, biotechnological, and medical purposes. The extraction and purification methods for PBs have been optimized to enhance their bioavailability and stability, opening new avenues for industrial production. For this review, a comprehensive literature search was conducted using scientific databases such as PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science, prioritizing peer-reviewed articles published between 2000 and 2025, with an emphasis on recent advances from the last five years, using keywords such as “phycobiliproteins”, “phycobilins”, “bioactivities”, “therapeutic applications”, and “industrial use”. Studies were selected based on their relevance to the biological, technological, and pharmacological applications of PBPs and PBs. This review explores the diverse applications of PBs in therapeutic, diagnostic, and environmental fields, highlighting their potential as natural alternatives in the treatment of various diseases. The future perspectives for PBs focus on their incorporation into innovative drug delivery systems, biocompatible materials, and functional foods, presenting exciting opportunities for advancing human health and well-being. The SEA LIFE Trust Beluga Whale Sanctuary (BWS) has been in operation for over five years and serves as a unique case study to evaluate the effectiveness of marine sanctuaries for cetaceans. While cetacean sanctuaries are often regarded as a middle-ground solution between captivity and release, evidence from the BWS highlights complexities in adapting cetaceans to these environments. Despite initial assumptions that natural conditions would inherently improve welfare, the belugas at the BWS spent the majority of the operational period (92.6%) in a conventional indoor pool, due to health and welfare concerns. Repeated delays, challenges in acclimatization, and distress-related conditions observed during periods in the bay suggest that natural environments alone may not guarantee improved welfare. Additionally, the lack of publicly accessible data on health and welfare outcomes hinders comprehensive evaluation of the sanctuary’s success and raises questions about transparency and evidence-based practices. This review underscores the need for refined sanctuary models, improved infrastructure, and structured adaptation programs tailored to species and individual cetaceans. It highlights the importance of robust planning, ongoing research, and transparency to meet the ambitious goals of marine sanctuaries in the best interests of the well-being of cetaceans under human care. These considerations also raise concerns about the decision to relocate captive cetaceans to marine sanctuaries, as the available evidence suggests that such environments may not inherently guarantee better welfare outcomes. Obesity is a prevalent health issue among captive wildlife, but the obesity status of captive Asian elephants (Elephas maximus) in China has not been systematically investigated. This study assessed obesity in 204 captive Asian elephants across 43 facilities by recording seven potentially relevant variables: sex, age, daily feed supply, proportion of high-calorie feed, outdoor enclosure area, outdoor time, and foot disorders. Body condition was evaluated using visual scoring, revealing a high prevalence of overweight and obesity, particularly in zoo-kept elephants. Over 70% of captive Asian elephants in China were classified as overweight or obese. Statistical analysis indicated that insufficient outdoor time is likely a primary contributor to obesity among zoo elephants. We recommend extending outdoor time and regulating the supply of high-calorie feeds (e.g., fruits, vegetables, and pellets) to promote exercise and balance energy intake. Additionally, implementing positive reinforcement training for routine health checks, including foot exams and blood sampling, could improve data collection on elephant health and welfare, ultimately enhancing obesity management and overall animal well-being. This study investigates the captive environments of oriental small-clawed otter (OSO; Aonyx cinereus) cafés in Japan, aiming to identify discrepancies with established welfare guidelines. Improved management of these commercial facilities could raise awareness about the difficulties of keeping OSOs as pets and enhance their welfare. Utilizing the role of commercial facilities in public outreach, we consider that the rigorous implementation of proper care practices in these establishments could help mitigate the increasing demand for OSOs domestically and contribute to the conservation of the OSO. In this study, we focused on the critical aspects of the captive environment necessary to maintain the psychological well-being of OSOs and evaluated the captive environments of OSOs housed in animal cafés for OSO welfare using non-invasive methods. Based on zoo husbandry standards, it was found that there were deficiencies in aquatic environments and solitary housing conditions; however, the enrichment tools aligned with the guidelines. The results suggest that deviations from the recommended elements in the environment of OSOs in captivity are associated with a tendency of these OSOs to develop various diseases. It is deemed necessary to amend the regulations governing animal-handling businesses to include welfare criteria, and it is considered essential for each establishment to operate only after ensuring sufficient welfare for the OSOs. The host’s physiological well-being is intricately associated with the gut microbiota. However, previous studies regarding the intestinal microbiota have focused on domesticated or captive birds. This study used high-throughput sequencing technology to identify the gut bacterial communities of sympatric bean geese, hooded cranes, and domestic geese. The results indicated that the gut bacterial diversity in domestic geese and hooded cranes showed considerably higher diversity than bean geese. The gut bacterial community compositions varied significantly among the three hosts (p < 0.05). Compared to the hooded crane, the bean goose and domestic goose were more similar in their genotype and evolutionary history, with less difference in the bacterial community composition and assembly processes between the two species. Thus, the results might support the crucial role of host genotypes on their gut microbiota. The gut bacteria of wild hooded cranes and bean geese had a greater capacity for energy metabolism compared to domestic geese, suggesting that wild birds may rely more on their gut microbiota to survive in cold conditions. Moreover, the intestines of the three hosts were identified as harboring potential pathogens. The relative abundance of pathogens was higher in the hooded crane compared to the other two species. The hooded crane gut bacterial community assemblage revealed the least deterministic process with the lowest filtering/selection on the gut microbiota, which might have been a reason for the highest number of pathogens result. Compared to the hooded crane, the sympatric bean goose showed the least diversity and relative abundance of pathogens. The intestinal bacterial co-occurrence network showed the highest stability in the bean goose, potentially enhancing host resistance to adverse environments and reducing the susceptibility to pathogen invasion. In this study, the pathogens were also discovered to overlap among the three hosts, reminding us to monitor the potential for pathogen transmission between poultry and wild birds. Overall, the current findings have the potential to enhance the understanding of gut bacterial and pathogenic community structures in poultry and wild birds. Full article

(1) Background: Environmental enrichment (EE) is a management principle aimed at meeting the needs of animals under human care by identifying and providing essential environmental stimuli to contribute to the integrity of their psychological and physiological well-being. Studies on EE have been carried out worldwide, but consolidated information on how it has been used, who it has been used for, how it has been evaluated, and what gaps still exist in the subject is scarce in the scientific literature. This study assessed, employing a systematic review, the global scenario of research into EE in animals kept under human care over the last 17 years, answering the above-mentioned questions. (2) Methods: A search for EE papers was carried out in the Web of Science and Scopus databases from January 2005 to December 2021, resulting in 2002 articles from which information was extracted. (3) Results: Results showed an increase in the number of articles published on EE, especially in farms, but studies in laboratory environments continue to be more frequent. Mammals and birds are the most studied animal groups. Cognitive enrichment is the least utilised by researchers. The number of publications by researchers from countries in the southern hemisphere is low. (4) Conclusions: Although the technique of EE is being widely used, it is still focused on certain groups of animals in certain captive environments and carried out mainly in the northern hemisphere of the planet. Housing different animal groups in close-by facilities is common in wildlife centers. However, the impact on animal welfare is insufficiently studied in the literature. In this study, we analyzed the behavior of two adjacently housed chimpanzee groups to investigate how intergroup interactions may affect their behavior and, thus, their welfare. We recorded occurrences of abnormal and self-directed behaviors, two well-known indicators of stress in chimpanzees. Furthermore, we explored the social responses to said intergroup interactions by recording all inter- and intragroup affiliative and agonistic behaviors. Finally, we measured the number of vigilance occurrences that individuals directed towards other chimpanzees as an indicator of interest. Generalized Linear Mixed Models (GLMMs) were used to assess whether and how social interactions between neighboring groups might influence their behaviors, taking gender, age, group, and intergroup participation into account. Our results suggest that intergroup interactions promoted the occurrence of affiliative behaviors between group members. However, intergroup interactions caused the chimpanzees to exhibit a higher number of abnormal and self-directed behaviors and increased vigilance towards their group members when agonistic intergroup interactions occurred. Thus, adjacent housing does impact the chimpanzees’ behavior and welfare and should be continuously monitored and assessed to promote and maximize welfare. Full article

Inadequate management conditions can impair the welfare of captive-bred horses. Understanding individuals’ viewpoints and the factors influencing their decisions about adopting or avoiding certain practices may provide insights into their motivations and decision-making processes. This is particularly relevant in the equestrian community, where equine practitioners and enthusiasts often engage in harmful practices. We explored the beliefs, knowledge, and attitudes of equine practitioners and enthusiasts about horse welfare and the barriers that prevent them from employing better management practices that are essential to promoting horses’ welfare. The study consisted of in-depth semi-structured interviews conducted in person with 31 individuals directly involved in the equestrian environment in Brazil. Responses were analyzed through thematic analysis with a data-driven deductive approach. Participants’ beliefs, knowledge and attitudes to horse welfare were divided into three themes. The first theme, “Let the horse be a horse”, captured participants’ perceptions about how physical and mental aspects related to the nature and welfare of horses. The second theme, “Everyone does it like that”, includes the social norms that influence decisions about the practices that impact on the welfare of the horses. The third theme, “Beyond utopia: how and why horses are managed the way they are”, covered barriers that participants perceived as impediments to the use of best practices for the welfare of horses. While participants demonstrated awareness of welfare issues and acknowledged factors that negatively impact horses, there was a notable discrepancy between this knowledge and the implementation of improved management practices. This could be explained by several perceived barriers to implementing management practices that could enhance horse welfare, including lack of financial resources, limited physical space, shortage of qualified labor, time constraints, inadequate tools, and insufficient knowledge. Additionally, we identified deeply rooted social norms within the equestrian community and culturally established practices that limit approaches to horse welfare. Participants underscored the influence of these norms and different interpretations of “letting the horse be a horse” based on the horse’s value and purpose. Concerning low-value horses, the primary justifications for stall housing and concentrated feeding were linked to elevated costs involved in spatial demands and labor; in contrast, for high-value horses used in performance and aesthetics, the arguments shifted to potential benefits to the horses’ well-being. From an ethical perspective, ideally, individuals should refrain from owning horses if they cannot ensure the animals’ welfare. Additionally, if the equestrian community neglects public attitudes towards animal welfare, it risks eroding its social license. Full article
