This article examines the seismic assessment and strengthening of a traditional load-bearing masonry structure subjected to strong motion data, with particular emphasis on the effects of soil–structure interaction (SSI). The case study is the Archaeological Museum of Lemnos (AML)—a three-storey building with a composite load-bearing system of timber-framed stone masonry. Over time, the structure has undergone irreversible modifications, primarily involving reinforced concrete (RC) interventions. The building’s seismic performance was evaluated using two finite element models developed in the SAP2000 software (v. 25.3.00). The first model simulates the original structure, strengthened by grout injections, while the second represents the current condition of the structural system following RC additions. Soil–structure interaction was also investigated, given that the local soil is classified as Category D according to Eurocode 8 (EC8). Each model was analyzed under two different support conditions: fixed-base and SSI-inclusive. A suite of appropriate accelerograms was applied to both models, in compliance with Eurocode 8 using the SeismoMatch software, and linear time-history analyses were conducted. The results underscore the significant impact of SSI on the increase of peak tensile stress and interstorey drift ratios (IDRs), and highlight the influence of different strengthening techniques on the seismic response of historic load-bearing masonry structures. Radiography, favoured for its ability to provide a non-invasive insight into the contents of wrapped or coffined artefacts, has revolutionised the study of mummified human and animal remains. Despite this potential, the technology is limited by its capacity to realistically visualise the surface attributes of these often-complex artefacts. In this paper, photogrammetry—a technique widely used in archaeology and heritage applications—is applied to build upon the radiographic investigation of six ancient Egyptian votive artefacts from Manchester Museum; a study which combines the two techniques for the first time on votive material from the collection. The paper showcases the results gained through clinical radiography techniques (digital X-ray and computed tomography) on the internal contents of the artefacts, highlighting the problems encountered when viewing the outer surface. With a simple on-site photogrammetry protocol, improved visualisation was possible, providing photo-realistic renderings with important potential for both research, conservation and engagement. The Laogulou Yashu Archaeological Site in Chongqing represented a significant discovery in the study of medieval Chinese urban heritage. Among its remains, the 13th century terraced building F1 stood out for its scale and function as a governmental qiaolou (gate tower). This study reconstructed the original architectural design of F1 using an archaeotectural approach that integrated archaeological evidence and Song Dynasty architectural treatises, especially Yingzao Fashi, and comparatively analysed the building with contemporaneous structures and visual references. By applying the statistical estimation of historical measurement units (chi), typological analysis based on modular standards (cai) and the interpretive modelling of structural elements, the research offered a historically grounded and dimensionally coherent reconstruction. The study not only enhanced the understanding of Southern Song governmental architecture but also contributed a replicable methodological framework for reconstructing complex historical buildings from fragmentary archaeological data. The coexistence of three sub-ethnic architectural traditions, Cantonese, Hakka and Teochew, renders Guangdong Province a typical locality for cultural geographical study of Chinese building heritage. Focusing on timber structures as the key indicator of Chinese historical architecture, this paper conducts a typological–chronological study on Cantonese palatial-type (Diantang Shi) timber construction, a previously under-studied building type, aiming to establish for the first time its detailed evolutionary process. Through the interdisciplinary methodology of building archaeology, archaeological theory of material cultural evolution as well as archaeological methods of dating analysis are integrated, achieving more precision in architectural examination both geographically and historically. As a result, 20 cases are dated in the Ming and Qing dynasties with 12 structural elements rapidly evolving, substantiating periodization of Cantonese palatial-type timber construction into three evolutionary phases. Periodization further facilitates the identification of two dramatic structural variations in the second phase, revealing Hakka–Cantonese cultural transmission and political intervention as two different socio-cultural mechanisms underpinning architectural transformations. The typological–chronological study is thus transferred into socio-cultural discourse, presenting a new methodological paradigm for architectural heritage study to incorporate the diachronic scope into the static synchronic approach of cultural geographical scholarship. Authenticity is a core principle in conservation guidelines and a key goal of heritage preservation, especially in Serbia, where many aging objects face ongoing deterioration. The subject of this study is the church within the Blagoveštenje Monastery complex in the Ovčar-Kablar gorge, built using stone from a local quarry at the beginning of the 17th century. The inclination of the structure, observed as progressively increasing over the centuries, raises important concerns regarding its stability. This research focuses on identifying the underlying causes of this phenomenon in order to support its long-term preservation. The methods used the study are long-term in situ observations including analysis, geodetic research, 3D laser imaging, geophysical, geological, archaeological research, evaluation of current condition, determination of structural failures and their cause and monitoring the structural behavior of elements. All methods were carried out in accordance with the definition of rehabilitation measures and the protection of masonry buildings. The main contribution of this study is identifying that the church’s inclination and deviation result from the northern foundation resting on weaker soil and a deeper rock mass compared to the southern side. The research approach and findings presented in this paper can serve as a guide for future endeavors aimed at identifying the causes of deformations and the restoration and structural rehabilitation of masonry buildings as cultural heritage. Debates about prehistoric Amazonian subsistence, social organization, and landscape use have ranged from ethnographically based characterizations of relatively mobile foragers to archaeological evidence that suggests sedentary agriculturalists. Recently, great antiquity of settled agriculture and complex social organization has been asserted for portions of the northern Amazon. However, the role of theory and inferences drawn from habitat diversity have receded in these debates. This paper synthesizes the current literature regarding long-term evolutionary changes in Amazon Basin societies with an archaeological case study from mound-building sites of Guyana and ethnoarchaeological data from Venezuelan forager–gardeners to develop a hypothesis regarding the critical role of habitat, aquatic resources, and seasonality in the transition from intensified foraging to cultivation. Weathering steel has a fascinating history that dates back to the 1930s, and its evolution has left an indelible mark on various industries, from railways to architecture. Thanks to its high corrosion resistance with respect to conventional steel, weathering steel has assumed key roles in structural applications (buildings, bridges, railways, etc.), non-structural elements (facades, decorative elements), and installations at archaeological sites (retrofitting, sculptures), especially when exposed to aggressive environments. This paper is aimed at providing a state-of-the-art overview of the application of weathering steel in architecture and engineering applications, focusing on the development of scientific and technical knowledge on the subject and on future directions arising from current utilization. An evolution timeline of weathering steel-based constructions and their structural/typological classification is illustrated and discussed. In such a context, pros and cons related to maintenance aspects of weathering steel structures are also discussed, accounting for costs relative to structural and nonstructural maintenance and those related to environmental sustainability with respect to other traditional constructions. From a structural design point of view, the rules and recommendations provided by the main national and international standards—concerning material properties and types, design, and checks on structural members made with weathering steel—are analyzed, critically discussed, and compared, also with the aim of identifying possible gaps in comparison with other construction materials. In the field of building archaeology, the analysis of wall surfaces represents a fundamental tool for the study of an architecture and its construction phases. In fact, masonry stores valuable information regarding not only used materials and construction techniques but also transformations happen over time for natural events or anthropic interventions. The traditional approach to the analysis of building materials is mainly based on direct observation and manual annotations based on orthophotos obtained through photogrammetric surveys. This process, while providing a high degree of accuracy and understanding, is extremely time- and resource-consuming. In addition, the lack of standardised procedures for the statistical analysis of measurements leads to data that are difficult to compare for different contexts. Time and subjectivity are ultimately the two main limitations that most hinder the diffusion of the mensiochronological approach and for this reason, the most recent artificial intelligence solutions for the segmentation and extraction of measurements of individual masonry components will be addressed. Finally, a workflow will be presented based on image segmentation using machine learning models and the automatic extraction and statistical analysis of measurements using a script designed specifically by the author for the mensiochronological analysis of Roman brick masonry. Desiccated microclimates offer an effective method of managing safe storage of archaeological metals. They utilise simple hardware that can produce low relative humidity (RH) environments on a small scale to control post-excavation change in objects. Previous studies have highlighted the complexity of decision-making when setting up desiccated microclimates involving many factors that can impact on their performance. These include the design of the container used to house the microclimate, the ambient external atmosphere, the target internal RH, the amount of silica gel used and its regeneration schedule. This paper builds on that understanding by replicating reported sector-wide variations in how silica gel is used within desiccated microclimates. The desiccation efficacy, rate of change in RH and response to short-term fluctuations have been examined by monitoring the RH in polypropylene containers when silica gel is used loose, in polythene bags and Tyvek® bags. The effect of variables in the use of polythene bags to hold silica gel, including the distribution of bags and the number and size of holes in bags has also been investigated. Results indicate that these variables impact rates of change in RH and how effective the desiccated microclimate is at buffering external RH fluctuations. All tests reinforce the importance of airflow between the silica gel and the microclimate. Where airflow is restricted, the ability of the microclimate to desiccate the environment below lowest known corrosion thresholds (15% RH) is compromised. The practical implications of the results have been discussed to support decision-making and guidance is offered on best practice. Full article

Military Orders in the Iberian Peninsula in the Middle Ages were greatly involved in both the processes of conquest and subsequent transformation of the territories seized from Islamic rule. Evidence of this involvement is still visible today through solid and long-lasting buildings raised in response to the new needs of the dominant Christian society. The most significant were fortresses, and all their variants, followed by the temples of various sizes and categories. However, there were also other lesser-known constructions including mills, hospitals, houses of the commandery, and houses of agricultural domains. This study, based on written and archaeological sources, focuses on the constructions linked to the Military Orders, especially those of the Orders of Santiago, Calatrava, and St. John throughout the Kingdom of Castile between the 12th and 15th centuries. This analysis thus delves into the temporal sequence and regional variations of these features that not only led to a transformation of the landscape but also reflected changes in the framework of a particular type of society affected by power relations, technological evolution, available resources and wealth, as well as by its mentality and identity. Founded on data gleaned through basic research, this study thus attempts to reconstruct, among other aspects, this historical development by identifying the operational sequence which began with the procurement of raw materials, passing through the construction processes, and the application of different techniques. The study has likewise placed a special emphasis on the alarifes and the final results of their duties by analysing their choices of construction techniques and their functions. Full article

In ancient Olynthus (Greece), an Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) was utilized to collect both RGB and multispectral (MS) images of the archaeological site. Ground Control Points (GCPs) were used to solve the blocks of images and the production of Digital Surface Models (DSMs) and orthophotomosaics. Check Points (CPs) were employed to verify the spatial accuracy of the products. The innovative image fusion process carried out in this paper, which combined the RGB and MS orthophotomosaics from UAS sensors, led to the creation of a fused image with the best possible spatial resolution (five times better than that of the MS orthophotomosaic). This improvement facilitates the optimal visual and digital (e.g., classification) analysis of the archaeological site. Utilizing the fused image and reviewing the literature, the paper compiles and briefly presents information on the Hippodamian system of the excavated part of the ancient city of Olynthus (regularity, main and secondary streets, organization of building blocks, public and private buildings, types and sizes of dwellings, and internal organization of buildings) as well as information on its socio-economic organization (different social groups based on the characteristics of the buildings, commercial markets, etc.). In their evolution from conservation places of isolated resources to social spaces in service of communities, museums are increasingly called to express their representative character towards their originating territories. Furthermore, the museum’s mission has been gradually enriched with new, more complex functions towards local communities, through a call to actively confront with their contexts, a trend the recent pandemic events have only accelerated. Cultural heritage, with museums at the forefront, as an acknowledged driver of socioeconomic development, has manifold impacts on territories, which have been identified and investigated in the literature, often from a potential perspective. Given the strong territorial component of the museum heritage connection with its reference context, this study aims to investigate the contribution that mapping and GIS technologies, traditionally employed at the scale of single museum buildings, can offer in assessing the actual “living” presence of museums in the local socioeconomic and productive fabric, through the relationships with other reference entities in the territories and their outreach. Taking a sample with a marked nature of spatially ‘distributed’ heritage (archaeologic museums of the Puglia region, South Italy) as a case study, the article presents a mapped representation of a questionnaire-based survey of museums’ recent territorial relationships. The twofold outcomes of the study show, on the one hand, that the investigated sample still experiences criticalities in fully expressing and communicating its potentialities and values in the current scenario and, on the other hand, that mapping technologies can concretely contribute to the museum sector’s innovation by examining its territorial relationships, in line with the current conceptual evolution, also with possible implications on museums’ quality assessment. The present study constitutes the latest in a series of investigations conducted between 2021 and 2023 as part of the ongoing, multidisciplinary research project at the UNESCO archaeological site of Umm ar-Rasas in Amman Governorate, Jordan, which began in 2013. Building on the foundations of previous studies, this latest research offers a comprehensive analysis of the region, with a special focus on pinpointing the boundaries of the Byzantine–Umayyad settlement. The delineation of these boundaries has hitherto been the subject of theoretical discourse only, thus rendering this study a significant addition to the field. An innovative multi-dimensional, multi-methodological, and multi-scalar approach has been adopted, incorporating the capabilities of remote sensing technologies, archaeological surveys, laser scans, and geophysical prospecting to facilitate a shared interpretation of the results. This approach has culminated in the establishment of a probable configuration of the northern limits, which is truly remarkable. Full article

Below the central nave of the Gothic Cathedral of Palencia (14th to 16th centuries) lies the Crypt of San Antolín, which represents the remains of a Visigothic building from the mid-7th century. The crypt itself has suffered recurrent episodes of flooding over the centuries. However, the latest flooding, which began in mid-2021 and ended in mid-2023, is one of the most long-lasting episodes on the historical record. To establish the origin of these flooding episodes, the geological and hydrological properties of the subsoil have been determined by direct prospecting techniques (drilling) and indirect geophysical techniques (Electrical Resistivity Tomography). The prospecting has determined that the aquifer in the area has a basin-like geometry, which favors the accumulation of water below the crypt. This work has shown that the recurrent floods suffered by the crypt prior to 2021 are related to episodes of intense rainfall. However, after 2021, there is a direct relationship between the persistent flooding and the onset of landscaping at the Plaza de San Antolín, one of the squares near the cathedral. In addition, previous archaeological excavations carried out in 1965 in that same square had disrupted the stratigraphic column, easing the percolation of water. We conclude that the increase in landscaped areas in archaeological environments may modify the hydrogeological dynamics of the subsoil and affect the surrounding buildings. Full article

The architectural artefacts, materials, and techniques used for constructing shelters may share some common properties derived from the architectural culture that has evolved within the human species. This article examines the material features and settlement organisations employed in the nest-building activities of early human species and the shelter forms of indigenous peoples residing in sub-Saharan Africa. It questions whether early modern human notions of architectural heritage, which lack substantiation, might have influenced nest construction, typological differentiation, material utilisation, and the transmission of practices to subsequent generations and habitats. The focus is on home-based spatial organisation and the construction of structures. We recognise the need to clarify some fundamental misunderstandings regarding the nature of cultural and archaeological taxonomies, as well as the misuse of analogical reasoning when comparing contemporary hunter–gatherer populations with certain hominin groups. The paper aims to explore whether the early ‘Homo architecture’ in Africa bears any resemblance to that of modern Africans. The central inquiry of this study is whether indigenous architectural artefacts, materials, and techniques have been passed down throughout the evolution of architectural culture. The discussion suggests that the architectural products found in the settlement remains of early Homo species may exhibit characteristics similar to the huts of the indigenous people, who live as hunter–gatherers in sub-Saharan Africa. Discussing the architectural activities of different human species proves fruitful, as early architectural understanding and principles can be adapted to contemporary placemaking scenarios, urban design approaches, and housing models. We believe that, with further evidence, this foundational idea has the potential to be developed further. Full article
