Cardiovascular diseases remain a leading cause of mortality in the United States, driving the need for advanced cardiovascular devices and pharmaceuticals. Mock Circulatory Loops (MCLs) have emerged as essential tools for in vitro testing, replicating pulsatile pressure and flow to simulate various physiological and pathological conditions. While many studies focus on custom MCL designs tailored to specific applications, few have systematically reviewed their use in device testing, and none have assessed their broader utility across diverse biomedical domains. This comprehensive review categorizes MCL designs into three types: mechanical, computational, and hybrid. Applications are classified into four major areas: Cardiovascular Devices Testing, Clinical Training and Education, Hemodynamics and Blood Flow Studies, and Disease Modeling. Most existing MCLs are complex, highly specialized, and difficult to reproduce, highlighting the need for simplified, standardized, and programmable hybrid systems. Improved validation and waveform fidelity—particularly through incorporation of the dicrotic notch and other waveform parameters—are critical for advancing MCL reliability. Furthermore, integration of machine learning and artificial intelligence holds significant promise for enhancing waveform analysis, diagnostics, predictive modeling, and personalized care. In conclusion, the development of MCLs should prioritize standardization, simplification, and broader accessibility to expand their impact across biomedical research and clinical translation. Sexual health constitutes a fundamental aspect of overall well-being, with direct implications for individual development and the broader social and economic progress of communities. Promoting environments that ensure sexual experiences free from coercion, discrimination, and violence is a key public health priority. Sexuality, in this regard, should be understood as an inherent dimension of human experience, shaped by biological, cultural, cognitive, and ideological factors. Accordingly, sexual health education requires a holistic and multidimensional approach that integrates sociocultural, biographical, and professional perspectives. This study aims to examine the level of knowledge and training in sexual health among nursing students and healthcare professionals, as well as to assess the extent to which sexual health content is incorporated into nursing curricula at Spanish universities. A scoping review was conducted using the Dialectical Structural Model of Care (DSMC) as the theoretical framework. The findings indicate a significant lack of knowledge regarding sexual health among both nursing students and healthcare professionals, largely due to educational and structural limitations. Furthermore, sexual health education remains underrepresented in nursing curricula and is frequently addressed from a narrow, fragmented biomedical perspective. These results highlight the urgent need for the comprehensive integration of sexual health content into nursing education. Strengthening curricular inclusion is essential to ensure the preparation of competent professionals capable of delivering holistic, inclusive, and empowering care in this critical area of health. Plant by-products have gained significant attention due to their rich content in bioactive compounds, which exhibit promising antioxidant, antimicrobial, and antitumor properties. In European countries, vegetable waste generation ranged from 35 to 78 kg per capita in 2022, highlighting both the scale of the challenge and the potential for valorization. This review provides an overview of key studies investigating the potential of plant residues in biomedicine, highlighting their possible contents of antioxidant compounds, their antimicrobial and antitumor properties, as well as their applications in dermocosmetics and nutraceuticals. However, despite their potential, several challenges must be addressed, such as the standardization of extraction protocols, as bioactive compound profiles can vary with plant source, processing conditions, and storage methods. Effective segregation and storage protocols for household organic waste also require optimization to ensure the quality and usability of plant by-products in biomedicine. Emerging 4.0 technologies could help to identify suitable plant by-products for biomedicine, streamlining their selection process for high-value applications. Additionally, the transition from in vitro studies to clinical trials is hindered by gaps in the understanding of Absorption, Distribution, Metabolism, and Excretion (ADME) properties, as well as interaction and toxicity profiles. Nonetheless, environmental education and societal participation are crucial to enabling circular bioeconomy strategies and sustainable biomedical innovation. Full article

The incorporation of digital health into the medical curricula is becoming more important to better prepare doctors in the future. Digital health comprises a wide range of tools such as electronic health records, health information technology, telemedicine, telehealth, mobile health applications, wearable devices, artificial intelligence, and virtual reality. The present study aimed to explore the medical and biomedical students’ perspectives on the integration of digital health in medical curricula. A cross-sectional study was conducted on the medical and biomedical undergraduate students at the College of Medicine and Health Sciences at Sultan Qaboos University. Data was collected using a self-administered questionnaire. The response rate was 37%. The majority of respondents were in the MD (Doctor of Medicine) program (84.4%), while 29 students (15.6%) were from the BMS (Biomedical Sciences) program. A total of 55.38% agreed that they were familiar with the term ‘e-Health’. Additionally, 143 individuals (76.88%) reported being aware of the definition of e-Health. Specifically, 69 individuals (37.10%) utilize e-Health technologies every other week, 20 individuals (10.75%) reported using them daily, while 44 individuals (23.66%) indicated that they never used such technologies. Despite having several benefits, challenges exist in integrating digital health into the medical curriculum. There is a need to overcome the lack of infrastructure, existing educational materials, and digital health topics. In conclusion, embedding digital health into medical curricula is certainly beneficial for creating a digitally competent healthcare workforce that could help in better data storage, help in diagnosis, aid in patient consultation from a distance, and advise on medications, thereby leading to improved patient care which is a key public health priority. Background/Objectives: The increasing population of childhood cancer survivors presents new challenges for healthcare systems worldwide. While advances in oncological treatments have dramatically improved survival rates, survivors face a broad spectrum of late effects that extend beyond the biological to encompass profound psychological and social dimensions. Methods: This quasi-systematic review synthesizes data from recent studies on adolescent survivors, revealing significant disruptions in cognitive function, mental health, social integration, education, romantic relationships, and vocational outcomes. Results: This review highlights the inadequacy of a solely biomedical model and advocates for a biopsychosocial approach to long-term follow-up care. An emphasis is placed on the necessity of personalized, interdisciplinary, and developmentally informed interventions, especially in countries like Poland, where structured survivorship care models remain underdeveloped. Conclusions: The findings underscore the importance of integrating medical, psychological, and social services to ensure adolescent cancer survivors achieve not only physical recovery but also meaningful life participation and emotional well-being. Snail and Zeb1 have been suggested as markers for the hybrid/mixed epithelial (E)/mesenchymal (M) state of cancer cells. Such cancer cells co-express E- and M-specific transcripts and possess cancer stem cell properties. M13HS-2/-8 tumor hybrid clones derived from human M13SV1-EGFP-Neo breast epithelial cells and human HS578T-Hyg breast cancer cells exhibited co-expression of Snail and Zeb1. To explore the impact of Snail on stemness/epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT)-related properties in M13HS-2/-8 tumor hybrid clones, Snail was knocked out (KO) using CRISPR/Cas9. Mammosphere formation, colony formation, Western blot analyses, cell migration, and invasion assays were conducted for the characterization of Snail knockout cells. Interestingly, Snail-KO in M13SV1-EGFP-Neo cells resulted in the up-regulation of vimentin and N-cadherin, suggesting EMT induction, which was associated with a significantly enhanced colony formation capacity. In contrast, EMT marker pattern and colony formation capacities of M13HS-2/-8 Snail-KO tumor hybrid clones remained unchanged. Notably, the mammosphere formation capacities of M13HS-2/-8 Snail-KO tumor hybrid clones were significantly reduced. The migratory behavior of all Snail-KO cells was not altered compared with their wild-type counterparts. In contrast, M13HS-2 hybrids and their M13HS-2 Snail-KO variant exhibited a markedly enhanced invasive capacity. Therefore, Snail plays a role as a mediator of stemness properties rather than mediating EMT. Full article

Calcium plays a major role in all cellular functions, and its regulation is important in all aspects of human health. This key role calcium plays in cell function can be traced to its unique molecular coordination geometry, which is often overlooked in understanding calcium function. In this review, we integrate calcium’s ability to form various complexes with proteins and small molecules with its role as a key signaling atom. We argue that calcium’s ability to vary its coordination structures, compared to magnesium’s rigid geometry, explains its importance in biological functions. By examining calcium-mediated proteins, such as those containing EF-hand domains and those that assemble and stabilize the extracellular matrix in tissue organization, we demonstrate how calcium’s varied geometric coordination serves as both a signaling molecule and a regulator of physiological homeostasis. Biomedical research training initiatives need rigorous evaluation to achieve national goals of supporting a robust workforce in the biomedical sciences. Higher science self-efficacy is associated with the likelihood of pursuing a science-related research career, but we know little about the psychometric properties of this construct. In this study, we report on a comprehensive validation study of the Science Self-Efficacy Scale using a robust sample of 10,029 undergraduates enrolled across 11 higher education institutions that were part of a biomedical training initiative funded by the National Institutes of Health in the United States. We found the scale to be unidimensional with an Omega hierarchical (ωh) reliability coefficient of 0.86 and a marginal reliability of 0.91. Within the item response theory framework, we did not detect variation in item parameters across undergraduates’ race/ethnicity; however, one item had parameters that varied across gender identity. We determined that the Science Self-Efficacy Scale can be employed across undergraduates enrolled in science, and researchers can use the scale across a diverse group of students. Implications include ensuring that the scale functions consistently across diverse populations, enhancing the validity of conclusions that can be drawn from survey data analysis. Validating this construct with item response theory models strengthens its use for future research. Full article

Human adenoviruses (HAdVs) are pathogens causing different illnesses, particularly in pediatric and immunocompromised patients in developed countries. The clinical spectrum of HAdV-infections ranges from mild to severe, and the clinical presentation varies widely. Certain HAdVs types, including types B3, E4, B7, B14, B21, G55, and B66, may be associated with lower respiratory tract infections and thus lead to higher hospitalization, increased morbidity, as well as lethality rates. The aim of this article is to synthesize and analyze the prevalence of specific HAdV types in pediatric patients worldwide. A systematic literature search was performed using MEDLINE, Scopus, and Web of Science. In total, n = 1167 titles and abstracts were screened, and 105 full-text articles were assessed for eligibility. Screening, data extraction, and appraisal were analyzed by reviewers, in accordance with PRISMA guidelines and JBI recommendations. We included studies reporting on currently circulating HAdV types (n = 16). Based on a systematic and narrative approach, relevant types of HAdV biology and infections in children are presented. In detail, HAdV-B3 and HAdV-B7 were commonly associated with severe respiratory tract infections, while HAdV-F40 and HAdV-F41 caused acute gastroenteritis. Moreover, detailed research revealed the critical role of HAdV-C2 and the necessity for particular attention to HAdVs in acute neurological infections. This comprehensive analysis highlights the significant global distribution and diverse clinical implications of different HAdV types in children, pointing out the need for continued surveillance to better understand HAdVs epidemiology and its implications for public health, and future preventive measures, in particular among vulnerable patients. Background: The Museum for Anatomy and Pathology at the Radboud University (The Netherlands) has created a permanent teratological exhibition, which is enhanced with augmented reality (AR) modalities. This exhibition serves various (post)graduate educational purposes and is open to the general public. However, data on visitors’ views and experiences regarding the teratological collection and AR models are currently lacking. Methods: To address this, a qualitative study was conducted to explore visitors’ opinions and experiences. One-on-one in-depth interviews were conducted using a predefined topic list, with audio recordings transcribed verbatim. Thematic analysis was applied to the twenty-six interview transcripts. Results: The findings indicate that publicly displaying teratological specimens alongside AR modalities is valued and positively received by both (bio)medical students and laypeople alike. AR enhances understanding of dysmorphology and provides a more interactive and engaging learning experience for complex topics. Conclusion: The use of AR within a teratological exposition holds tremendous educational potential and improves public awareness and acceptance of developmental anomalies. Moreover, it provides a unique opportunity to reflect on both historical and contemporary bioethical issues. Full article

Background/Objectives: The co-occurrence of Attention-deficit/hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is very common and worsens adaptive functioning. This systematic review evaluates both pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions in this underserved population. Methods: Registered on PROSPERO (CRD42024526157), a systematic search was conducted on PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science until 5 April 2025. The review includes (a) pilot studies and RCTs, (b) participants aged <18 years, (c) diagnoses of ASD and ADHD based on DSM-IV/V or ICD-9/10, (d) at least one group receiving any intervention, and (e) publications in English, Italian, Spanish, or German. Newcastle Ottawa Scale tools for non-randomized studies and the Cochrane Risk of Bias Tools for randomized controlled trials were used to assess studies’ quality. Results: A total of 32 studies were included: 87.5% concerning pharmacological treatments. Specifically, methylphenidate (MPH, n = 11), atomoxetine (ATX, n = 11), guanfacina (n = 4), clonidine (n = 1), or atypical antipsychotics (n = 1) were examined. MPH and ATX were most frequently studied, with both showing positive effects in reducing ADHD core symptoms compared to placebo. ATX also reduces stereotyped behaviors and social withdrawal, although more withdrawals due to adverse events (AEs) were reported for ATX than MPH. Four studies (12.5%) examined non-pharmacological interventions, including treatment with virtual reality tools, digital platforms, educational animations, and biomedical protocols; improvements in emotion recognition, behavioral regulation, attention, and social functioning were found. Conclusions: While limited data prevent definitive conclusions, MPH and ATX appear to be relatively safe and effective on hyperactivity-impulsivity symptoms, even in individuals with ASD. Evidence on non-pharmacological treatments is limited, and further studies are needed to better establish their therapeutic potential. Full article

Anxiety disorders are among the most common psychiatric conditions that significantly impair one’s quality of life and place a significant burden on healthcare systems. Conventional treatments have certain restraints, such as potential side effects and limited efficacy. Τhe underlying pathophysiological mechanisms of anxiety are not fully understood. A comprehensive literature search was performed in MEDLINE and Scopus databases for original English-language articles published between January 2014 and December 2024. Study selection, data extraction, and screening were independently carried out by multiple investigators using predefined criteria. Our review aimed to help better comprehend the molecular basis of anxiety, focusing on the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis, serotonergic signaling, and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) neurotransmission. In addition, we addressed the role of epigenetics and pharmacogenomics in personalized treatment. Although novel anxiety treatments are promising, they are predominantly preclinical and highly heterogeneous, which poses a challenge to achieving reliable therapeutic efficacy. Our findings could potentially contribute to the development of new therapeutic interventions. Further research is warranted, especially in human subjects, with an aim to combine genetic and epigenetic profiles to refine treatment approaches and develop innovative therapeutics. Full article

New STI/HIV diagnoses disproportionately impact U.S. Black cisgender women at higher rates compared to other racial/ethnic U.S. cisgender women. Biomedical HIV prevention interventions, such as HIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis, have demonstrated lower uptake among Black women. Given the need to further develop prevention interventions that meet the sexual and reproductive health (SRH) needs of U.S. Black women, this study aimed to identify and characterize condom use behaviors, sexual communication efficacy, and SRH healthcare utilization among sexually experienced young Black women (YBW) aged 18–25 (N = 206). Participants completed a self-administered questionnaire assessing sexual and conception vulnerability, sexual/reproductive healthcare utilization, and sexual communication efficacy. Descriptive statistics and univariate analyses were conducted to identify correlations in sexual and reproductive behaviors. The results showed that 32% of YBW used a condom during their last sexual encounter. Five distinct trends in condom use were identified, three of which included condomless vaginal/oral sex. YBW reported high levels of sexual communication with sexual partners and consistent engagement in sexual/reproductive health care, including abortion care. Young Black women have diverse sexual/reproductive health needs and require culturally responsive patient-centered clinical practices aimed at reducing STI/HIV rates and unintended pregnancies. Future research could examine healthcare providers’ understanding of Black women’s SRH priorities and assess how this knowledge aligns with or diverges from established clinical guidelines and best practices. Such inquiries could illuminate potential gaps in provider education and clinical practice, ultimately informing the development of care models that are both evidence-based and responsive to the lived experiences of young Black women. “Walking a Day in My Shoes”: A Clinical Shadowing Program to Enhance Medical Students’ Understanding of Chronic Disease Management Beyond Clinical Settings

Aims/Background: Medical education is largely clinical and biomedical with little emphasis being put upon the social determinants of health (SDH) and patient-centredness. A programme entitled “Walking a Day in My Shoes” was devised as a pilot cohort study with the view of evaluating the impact of a clinical shadowing experience upon the empathy, SDH awareness, and patient-centredness of medical students. Methods: A prospective cohort study, involving 28 final-year London-area medical students, employing a three-phase teaching programme comprising preparation, observation, and reflection was carried out. Students’ confidence in the management of non-medical barriers, SDH awareness, and empathy before and after shadowing were measured using pre- and post-shadowing questionnaires. Qualitative analysis of patient feedback and journals also occurred. Results: Statistically significant improvements were observed in students’ empathy (mean score increase from 6.8 to 8.9, p < 0.001), understanding of SDH (advanced comprehension rose from 35% to 93%), confidence in addressing non-clinical barriers (from 39% to 86%), and awareness of logistical challenges (from 31% to 81%). Qualitative analysis highlighted key themes, including systemic barriers (transportation, polypharmacy, and social isolation) and students’ increased awareness of the emotional toll of chronic illness. Patients expressed high satisfaction, with 97% agreeing that the programme improved students’ understanding of chronic disease management. These findings suggest the programme’s practicality and scalability in medical education. Conclusions: This pilot cohort study demonstrated the significant enhancement of the students’ empathy, perception of SDH, and patient-centredness preparation through immersive shadowing. The findings support the use of experiential learning programmes as curricular interventions. Full article

Vaccination Schedules Recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention: From Human-Readable to Machine-Processable

Background: Reusable, machine-processable clinical decision support system (CDSS) rules have not been widely achieved in the medical informatics field. This study introduces the process, results, challenges faced, and lessons learned while converting the United States of America Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)-recommended immunization schedules (2022) to machine-processable CDSS rules. Methods: We converted the vaccination schedules into tabular, charts, MS Excel, and clinical quality language (CQL) formats. The CQL format can be automatically converted to a machine-processable format using existing tools. Therefore, it was regarded as a machine-processable format. The results were reviewed, verified, and tested. Results: We have developed 465 rules for 19 vaccines in 13 categories, and we have shared the rules via GitHub to make them publicly available. We used cross-review and cross-checking to validate the CDSS rules in tabular and chart formats. The CQL files were tested for syntax and logic with hypothetical patient HL7 FHIR resources. Our rules can be reused and shared by the health IT industry, CDSS developers, medical informatics educators, or clinical care institutions. The unique contributions of our work are twofold: (1) we created ontology-based, machine-processable, and reusable immunization recommendation rules, and (2) we created and shared multiple formats of immunization recommendation rules publicly which can be a valuable resource for medical and medical informatics communities. Conclusions: These CDSS rules can be important contributions to informatics communities, reducing redundant efforts, which is particularly significant in resource-limited settings. Despite the maturity and concise presentation of the CDC recommendations, careful attention and multiple layers of verification and review are necessary to ensure accurate conversion. The publicly shared CDSS rules can also be used for health and biomedical informatics education and training purposes. Full article
