In this study, astaxanthin, which has previously been shown to have antiviral effects, was examined for its dose-dependent potency to inhibit cellular SARS-CoV-2 infections. Naturally occurring astaxanthin is obtained and orally administered as ASX-oleoresin, a composition of different astaxanthin fatty acid esters. We therefore hypothesized that the compound’s beneficial effects are not only related to astaxanthin. Thus, a “green” algae extract (i.e., poor astaxanthin content < 0.2%; ASXp) of the microalgae Haematococcus pluvialis, as well as an astaxanthin-rich algae extract (astaxanthin content = 20%; ASXr), were tested in in vitro cellular viral infection assays. Thereby, it was found that both extracts reduced viral infections significantly. As a potential mode of inhibitory action, the binding of ASX-oleoresin to the viral spike protein was investigated by isothermal fluorescence titration, revealing binding affinities of Kd = 1.05 µM for ASXr and Kd = 1.42 µM for ASXp. Based on our data, we conclude that several ASX-oleoresin fractions from H. pluvialis exhibit antiviral activity, which extends beyond the known antioxidant activity of astaxanthin. From a molecular dynamic simulation of ASX-oleoresin, fatty acid domains could be considered as activity-chaperoning factors of ASX. Therefore, microalgae biomass should be considered in the future for further antiviral activities. Full article

This study investigates the beneficiation of finely grinded rutile ore utilizing a combination of flocculation and flotation methods. Rutile, a Ti-bearing mineral with industrial significance, is often associated with heavy minerals found in coastal and metamorphic environments. A rutile ore sample from Azıtepe (Alaşehir, Türkiye) was reduced to −63 µm and enriched under varying pH conditions (2.5–12) using different reagent combinations and was used for our investigation of both flocculation and flotation processes using reagents such as Aero801(SIPX), Aero825, tannic acid (TA), and pomace oil. The best results were achieved at pH: 8 using Aero801(SIPX) and pomace oil during flocculation, and Aero801(SIPX), Aero825, and Aerofroth88 during flotation, yielding a concentrate with an 8.99% TiO2 grade and an 89.5% recovery rate. Meanwhile, a 7.00% TiO2 grade concentrate was obtained with a recovery rate of 71.92% at neutral pH. This study found that pH and reagent selection had an important effect on TiO2 enrichment efficiency in fine size, low-grade rutile ores. Future research is recommended to investigate selective depressants and multi-stage cleaning to improve separation. Full article

Background: Relapsed/refractory acute myeloid leukemia (R/R AML) remains a therapeutic challenge due to disease heterogeneity, resistance mechanisms, and poor tolerability to intensive regimens. Venetoclax (VEN), a BCL-2 inhibitor, has shown promise in combination with hypomethylating agents (HMAs), but data on response timing in the R/R setting are limited. The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy, safety, and kinetics of response to HMA-VEN therapy in a real-world cohort of R/R AML patients, with particular focus on early versus late responders. Methods: This prospective single-center study included 33 adult patients with R/R AML treated with VEN plus either azacitidine (AZA) or decitabine (DEC) from 2018 to 2021. The primary endpoint was the composite complete remission (cCR) rate and the rate of early and late response, respectively, occurring within two cycles of therapy or later; secondary endpoints included overall survival (OS), relapse-free survival (RFS), time to relapse (TTR), and safety. Results: The cCR was 58%, with complete remission (CR) or CR with incomplete recovery (CRi) achieved in 52% of patients. Median OS was 9 months. No significant differences in OS or TTR were observed between early (≤2 cycles) and late (>2 cycles) responders. Eight responders (42%) underwent allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), with comparable transplant rates in both groups of responders. Toxicity was manageable. Grade 3–4 neutropenia occurred in all patients, and febrile neutropenia occurred in 44% of patients. An Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) score >2 was associated with inferior response and shorter treatment duration. Conclusions: HMA-VEN therapy is effective and safe in R/R AML, including for patients with delayed responses. The absence of a prognostic disadvantage for late responders supports flexible treatment schedules and suggests that the continuation of therapy may be beneficial even without early blast clearance. Tailored approaches based on performance status and comorbidities are warranted, and future studies should incorporate minimal residual disease (MRD)-based monitoring to refine response assessment. Effects of Compression Pants with Different Pressure Levels on Anaerobic Performance and Post-Exercise Physiological Recovery: Randomized Crossover Trial

Compression pants, as functional sportswear providing external pressure, are widely used to enhance athletic performance and accelerate recovery. However, systematic investigations into their effectiveness during anaerobic exercise and the impact of different pressure levels on performance and post-exercise recovery remain limited. This randomized crossover controlled trial recruited 20 healthy male university students to compare the effects of four garment conditions: non-compressive pants (NCP), moderate-pressure compression pants (MCP), high-pressure compression pants (HCP), and ultra-high-pressure compression pants (UHCP). Anaerobic performance was assessed through vertical jump, agility tests, and the Wingate anaerobic test, with indicators including time at peak power (TPP), peak power (PP), average power (AP), minimum power (MP), power drop (PD), and total energy produced (TEP). Post-exercise blood lactate concentrations and heart rate responses were also monitored. The results showed that both HCP and UHCP significantly improved vertical jump height (p < 0.01), while MCP outperformed all other conditions in agility performance (p < 0.05). In the Wingate test, MCP achieved a shorter TPP compared to NCP (p < 0.05), with significantly higher AP, lower PD, and greater TEP than all other groups (p < 0.05), whereas HCP showed an advantage only in PP over NCP (p < 0.05). Post-exercise, all compression pant groups recorded significantly higher peak blood lactate (Lamax) levels than NCP (p < 0.05), with MCP showing the fastest lactate clearance rate. Heart rate analysis revealed that HCP and UHCP induced higher maximum heart rates (HRmax) (p < 0.05), while MCP exhibited superior heart rate recovery at 3, 5, and 10 min post-exercise (p< 0.05). These findings suggest that compression pants with different pressure levels yield distinct effects on anaerobic performance and physiological recovery. Moderate-pressure compression pants demonstrated the most balanced and beneficial outcomes across multiple performance and recovery metrics, providing practical implications for the individualized design and application of compression garments in athletic training and rehabilitation. This study investigated the possibility of partial replacement of genetically modified soybean meal (SBM) with raw white lupin (WL) seeds in growing pigs’ diets and determined its impact on performance [body weight (BW), average daily gain (ADG), and average daily feed intake (ADFI)], meat quality, and fatty acid profile (FA). A total of 54 male crossbred pigs [(Topigs Large White × Norsvin Landrace) × Duroc], aged 12 weeks, with an initial average BW of 30.30 ± 0.77 kg, were divided into three dietary groups of 18 piglets each. The control group (CON) was fed a standardized SBM-based complete feed. In the experimental groups (WL1 and WL2) the SBM was replaced with increasing levels of WL seeds [WL1-5.0% and WL2-10.0% (grower period, 30–60 kg BW), and WL1-7.0% and WL2-14.0% (finisher period, 61–110 kg BW)]. All diets were formulated to be isocaloric and isonitrogenous with similar content of total lysine and sulphur amino acids, calcium, and available phosphorus. At the end of 83 days’ fattening trial, the animals were slaughtered. Longissimus dorsi muscle (LD) was sampled for analyses of the physicochemical traits. The results show that increasing the dietary raw WL concentration decreased final BW (p = 0.039), ADG (p < 0.0001), and ADFI (p = 0.004) throughout the experimental period, especially in the second phase of feeding. Dietary treatments did not affect the pigs’ blood biochemical constituents. Concerning LD muscle characteristics, the redness color (a*) and collagen content was higher (p < 0.0001) in the WL1/WL2 vs. CON group. Beneficial decrease in the values of some textural attributes (hardness, gumminess, chewiness, and resilience) of LD in the WL1/WL2 vs. CON group was registered. The use of WL had a significant effect on the content of FAs, especially for eicosapentaenoic (p = 0.014) and n-3 PUFA (p = 0.045), which were higher than those fed the CON diet. In conclusion, WL could be used as a replacement of SBM in growing–finishing pigs’ diets, with significant improvements in the meat fatty acid profile and technological properties. Full article

The purpose of this article is to examine a previously unrecognized role for the vasopressin–oxytocin (VP-OT) system in mammalian “stress-response hormesis.” The current review adds hormesis to the long list of beneficial effects of OT. Hormesis, a biphasic adaptive response to low-level stressors, is introduced here to contextualize the dynamic roles of oxytocin and vasopressin. As with hormesis, the properties of the VP-OT system are context-, time-, and dose-sensitive. Here we suggest that one key to understanding hormesis is the fact that VP and OT and their receptors function as an integrated system. The VP-OT system is capable of changing and adapting to challenges over time, including challenges necessary for survival, reproduction and sociality. Prior research suggests that many beneficial effects of OT are most apparent only following stressful experiences, possibly reflecting interactions with VP, its receptors and other components of the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis. The release of OT is documented following various kinds of hormetic experiences such as birth, vigorous exercise, ischemic events and the ingestion of emetics, including psychedelics. The phasic or cyclic modulation of VP and related “stress” hormones, accompanied or followed by the release of OT, creates conditions that conform to the core principles of hormesis. This concept is reviewed here in the context of other hormones including corticotropin releasing hormone (CRH) and urocortin, as well as cytokines. In general, VP and classic “stress hormones” support an active response, helping to quickly mobilize body systems. OT interacts with all of these, and may subsequently re-establish homeostasis and precondition the organism to deal with future stressors. However, the individual history of an organism, including epigenetic modifications of classical stress hormones such as VP, can moderate the effects of OT. Oxytocin’s effects also help to explain the important role of sociality in mammalian resilience and longevity. A hormetic perspective, focusing on a dynamic VP-OT system, offers new insights into emotional and physical disorders, especially those associated with the management of chronic stress, and helps us to understand the healing power of social behavior and perceived safety. The Use of Humic Substances as an Additive to Feed Mixtures in Pheasant Breeding

The effect of humic substances on growth performance, excretion, and the digestive organs was studied in pheasant chickens. Three hundred 1-day-old pheasant chicks were assigned to two equal groups. Chicks in the experimental group were fed diets supplemented with humic substances (5 g/kg). Chickens in the experimental group reached significantly higher average daily weight gains (p ˂ 0.05) in the second phase of rearing (29–49 d) at a significantly better feed conversion ratio (p ˂ 0.05). The supplementation of humic substances led to a significant increase in the average body weight of pheasants at the end of the experiment (p ˂ 0.05), and to a significant increase in average daily weight gains for the entire monitored period (p ˂ 0.05). In the experimental group, significantly higher relative weights of the gizzard (p ˂ 0.05), small intestine (p ˂ 0.05), and jejunum (p ˂ 0.05), along with a significantly larger relative length of the duodenum (p ˂ 0.05), were recorded. A significantly higher concentration of dry matter in the droppings of pheasants was found in the experimental group than in the control group (p ˂ 0.05). According to our results, feeding humic substances had the most beneficial effect on pheasant growth performance during the growing phase. Humic substances can also have a positive effect on the microclimate within the breeding facility. Reductions in the water content of droppings contribute to a reduction in the humidity of the litter, thus limiting the activity of nitrogenic bacteria. Full article

Background/Objectives: Pacifier use in infants has both beneficial and harmful implications, and dipping pacifiers in sweeteners is used by some parents to soothe infants. This study aimed to assess pacifier usage among mothers in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and to examine its association with child demographics, maternal socioeconomic status (SES), and maternal knowledge of the risks associated with dipping pacifiers in sweeteners. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among mothers of healthy children aged 2 to 4 years during community-awareness events in Jeddah. Participants completed a validated Arabic questionnaire covering pacifier use patterns, feeding practices, SES background, and knowledge regarding the adverse effects of pacifier sweetening. Results: A total of 1438 mothers participated. The mean age of children was 34.3 ± 10.7 months, with 441 children (30.7%) reported as pacifier users. Among them, 202 (45.8%) used pacifiers both during the day and at night. Most children (35.6%) discontinued use between 4 and 6 months of age. Only 6.1% of mothers reported adding sweeteners to pacifiers. Pacifier usage was significantly higher among first-born children (37.6%, p < 0.001), those who received both bottle- and breastfeeding (65.5%, p < 0.001), and children enrolled in nursery (62.1%, p = 0.007). Most mothers (75.6%) were aware of the link between sweetened pacifiers and dental caries, and 69.4% of those who had this knowledge avoided giving their child a pacifier (p = 0.077). Conclusions: Birth order, feeding practices, and nursery attendance are key predictors of pacifier use. Enhancing parental awareness and education may support early interventions to promote healthier oral and feeding habits in young children. Full article

Obesity, a multifactorial metabolic syndrome driven by genetic–epigenetic crosstalk and environmental determinants, manifests through pathological adipocyte hyperplasia and ectopic lipid deposition. With the limitations of conventional anti-obesity therapies, which are characterized by transient efficacy and adverse pharmacological profiles, the scientific community has intensified efforts to develop plant and fungal polysaccharide therapeutic alternatives. These polysaccharide macromolecules have emerged as promising candidates because of their diverse biological activities and often act as natural prebiotics, exerting beneficial effects through multiple pathways. Plant and fungal polysaccharides can reduce blood glucose levels, alleviate inflammation and oxidative stress, modulate metabolic signaling pathways, inhibit nutrient absorption, and reshape gut microbial composition. These effects have been shown in cellular and animal models and are associated with mechanisms underlying obesity and related metabolic disorders. This review discusses the complexity of obesity and multifaceted role of plant and fungal polysaccharides in alleviating its symptoms and complications. Current knowledge on the anti-obesity properties of plant and fungal polysaccharides is also summarized. We highlight their regulatory effects, potential intervention pathways, and structure–function relationships, thereby providing novel insights into polysaccharide-based strategies for obesity management. The genus Trichoderma plays a pivotal role in sustainable agriculture through its multifaceted contributions to plant health and productivity. This review explores Trichoderma’s biological functions, including its roles as a biocontrol agent, plant growth promoter, and stress resilience enhancer. By producing various enzymes, secondary metabolites, and volatile organic compounds, Trichoderma effectively suppresses plant pathogens, promotes root development, and primes plant immune responses. This review details the evolutionary adaptations of Trichoderma, which has transitioned from saprotrophism to mycoparasitism and established beneficial symbiotic relationships with plants. It also highlights the ecological versatility of Trichoderma in colonizing plant roots and improving soil health, while emphasizing its role in mitigating both biotic and abiotic stressors. With increasing recognition as a biostimulant and biocontrol agent, Trichoderma has become a key player in reducing chemical inputs and advancing eco-friendly farming practices. This review addresses challenges such as strain selection, formulation stability, and regulatory hurdles and concludes by advocating for continued research to optimize Trichoderma’s applications in addressing climate change, enhancing food security, and promoting a sustainable agricultural future. Multi-Scale Pure Graphs with Multi-View Subspace Clustering for Salient Object Detection

Salient object detection is a challenging task in the field of computer vision. The graph-based model has attracted lots of research attention and achieved remarkable progress in this task, which constructs graphs to formulate the intrinsic structure of any image. Nevertheless, the existing graph-based salient object detection methods still have certain limitations and face two major challenges: (1) Previous graphs are constructed by the Gaussian kernel, but they are often corrupted by original noise. (2) They fail to capture common representations and complementary diversity of multi-view features. Both of these degrade saliency performance. In this paper, we propose a novel method, called multi-scale pure graphs with multi-view subspace clustering for salient object detection. Its main contribution is a new, two-stage graph, constructed and constrained by multi-view subspace clustering with sparsity and low rank. One of the advantages is that the multi-scale pure graphs upgrade the saliency performance from the propagation of noise in the graph matrix. Another advantage is that the multi-scale pure graphs exploit consistency and complementary information among multi-view features, which can effectively boost the capability of the graphs. In addition, to verify the impact of the symmetry of the multi-scale pure graphs on the salient object detection performance, we compared the proposed two-stage graphs, which included cases considering the multi-scale pure graphs and those not considering the multi-scale pure graphs. The experimental results were derived using several RGB benchmark datasets and several state-of-the-art algorithms for comparison. The results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms the state-of-the-art approaches in terms of multiple standard evaluation metrics. This paper reveals that multi-view subspace clustering is beneficial in promoting graph-based saliency detection tasks. Full article

Pro-Reparative Effects of KvLQT1 Potassium Channel Activation in a Mouse Model of Acute Lung Injury Induced by Bleomycin

Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) is a complex and devastating form of respiratory failure, with high mortality rates, for which there is no pharmacological treatment. The acute exudative phase of ARDS is characterized by severe damage to the alveolar–capillary barrier, infiltration of protein-rich fluid into the lungs, neutrophil recruitment, and high levels of inflammatory mediators. Rapid resolution of this reversible acute phase, with efficient restoration of alveolar functional integrity, is essential before the establishment of irreversible fibrosis and respiratory failure. Several lines of in vitro and in vivo evidence support the involvement of potassium (K+) channels—particularly KvLQT1, expressed in alveolar cells—in key cellular mechanisms for ARDS resolution, by promoting alveolar fluid clearance and epithelial repair processes. The aim of our study was to investigate whether pharmacological activation of KvLQT1 channels could elicit beneficial effects on ARDS parameters in an animal model of acute lung injury. We used the well-established bleomycin model, which mimics (at day 7) the key features of the exudative phase of ARDS. Our data demonstrate that treatments with the KvLQT1 activator R-L3, delivered to the lungs, failed to improve endothelial permeability and lung edema in bleomycin mice. However, KvLQT1 activation significantly reduced neutrophil recruitment and tended to decrease levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines/chemokines in bronchoalveolar lavages after bleomycin administration. Importantly, R-L3 treatment was associated with significantly lower injury scores, higher levels of alveolar type I (HTI-56, AQP5) and II (pro-SPC) cell markers, and improved alveolar epithelial repair capacity in the presence of bleomycin. Together, these results suggest that the KvLQT1 K+ channel may be a potential target for the resolution of the acute phase of ARDS. Full article

Optimization of the Froth Flotation Process for the Enrichment of Cu and Co Concentrate from Low-Grade Copper Sulfide Ore

The increasing demand for critical raw materials such as copper and cobalt highlights the need for efficient beneficiation of low-grade ores. This study investigates a copper–cobalt sulfide ore (0.99% Cu, 0.028% Co) using froth flotation to produce high-grade concentrates. Various types of surfactants are applied in different ways, each serving an essential function such as acting as collectors, frothers, froth stabilizers, depressants, activators, pH modifiers, and more. A series of flotation tests employing different collectors (SIPX, PBX, AERO, DF 507B) and process conditions was conducted to optimize recovery and selectivity. Methyl isobutyl carbinol (MIBC) was consistently used as the foaming agent, and 700 g/L was used as the slurry density at 25 °C. Dosages of 30 and 100 g/t1 were used in all tests. Notably, adjusting the pH to ~4 using HCl significantly improved cobalt concentrate separation. The optimized flotation conditions yielded concentrates with over 15% Cu and metal recoveries exceeding 80%. Mineralogical characterization confirmed the selective enrichment of target metals in the concentrate. The results demonstrate the potential of this beneficiation approach to contribute to the European Union’s supply of critical raw materials. Full article

Early Rotator Cuff Repair Yields Lower Retear Rates and Superior Functional Outcomes: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Background: Optimal timing for surgery following acute rotator cuff tears remains unclear. This study examines how the timing of arthroscopic rotator cuff repair (RCR) affects retear rates and functional outcomes. Methods: This PROSPERO-registered review (CRD42024528249) followed PRISMA guidelines and included randomized trials, and cohort, studies on adults with imaging-confirmed full-thickness rotator cuff tears. Studies lacking timing data or key outcomes were excluded. Risk of bias was assessed using ROBINS-I. Meta-analysis of retear rates was performed comparing surgical timing. Qualitative analysis was conducted classifying results as early-beneficial, delayed-detrimental, or neutral. Results: Our review included 13 studies and 871 patients with an average age of 57.9. Meta-analysis of eight studies comparing retear rates between early and delayed RCR demonstrated a significant benefit associated with early intervention risk ratio 0.60 (95% CI: 0.38–0.96). Functional outcomes also favored early intervention with four studies demonstrating significantly greater postoperative functional improvements in the early intervention group. Conclusions: Early arthroscopic RCR decreased the rate of retear and improved functional outcomes. No study found early intervention to be detrimental or delayed intervention to be superior. These findings support consideration of early repair when clinically appropriate. Future studies should determine more finite timing guidelines. Full article

Constructal Design and Numerical Simulation Applied to Geometric Evaluation of Stiffened Steel Plates Subjected to Elasto-Plastic Buckling Under Biaxial Compressive Loading

Widely employed in diverse engineering applications, stiffened steel plates are often subjected to biaxial compressive loads. Under these conditions, buckling may occur, initially within the elastic range but potentially progressing into the elasto-plastic domain, which can lead to permanent deformations or structural collapse. To increase the ultimate buckling stress of plates, the implementation of longitudinal and transverse stiffeners is effective; however, this complexity makes analytical stress calculations challenging. As a result, numerical methods like the Finite Element Method (FEM) are attractive alternatives. In this study, the Constructal Design method and the Exhaustive Search technique were employed and associated with the FEM to optimize the geometric configuration of stiffened plates. A steel plate without stiffeners was considered, and 30% of its volume was redistributed into stiffeners, creating multiple configuration scenarios. The objective was to investigate how different arrangements and geometries of stiffeners affect the ultimate buckling stress under biaxial compressive loading. Among the configurations evaluated, the optimal design featured four longitudinal and two transverse stiffeners, with a height-to-thickness ratio of 4.80. This configuration significantly improved the performance, achieving an ultimate buckling stress 472% higher than the unstiffened reference plate. In contrast, the worst stiffened configuration led to a 57% reduction in performance, showing that not all stiffening strategies are beneficial. These results demonstrate that geometric optimization of stiffeners can significantly enhance the structural performance of steel plates under biaxial compression, even without increasing material usage. The approach also revealed that intermediate slenderness values lead to better stress distribution and delayed local buckling. Therefore, the methodology adopted in this work provides a practical and effective tool for the design of more efficient stiffened plates. Full article
