Fire can produce long-lasting changes in forest habitat structure and insect communities, but responses may depend on local post-fire conditions rather than fire history alone. We tested two working hypotheses: (1) drosophilid assemblages at fire-affected sites would differ in abundance and species composition from those in unburned forest, and (2) selected species would show consistent associations with fire-affected or unburned habitats and could therefore serve as candidate indicators of post-fire conditions. Drosophilids were sampled at 11 forest sites in the Mordovia State Nature Reserve, Central European Russia: three sites burned in 2010, six burned in both 2010 and 2021, and two unburned controls. From May to September 2022, 3537 individuals representing 30 species and nine genera were collected using beer-baited traps. The two control sites yielded 2175 individuals (61% of the total catch). Restricted permutation analyses that retained sampling site as the spatial unit and accounted for repeated monthly observations confirmed significant differences in community composition between fire-affected and unburned sites; the contrast remained significant when relative abundances were analyzed, showing that it was not explained solely by differences in total catch. In contrast, once- and twice-burned sites did not differ significantly when compared directly. Seven drosophilid species, Drosophila histrio, D. testacea, D. phalerata, D. transversa, D. obscura, D. subobscura, and Leucophenga quinquemaculata, showed their strongest site-level associations with unburned forest and were 8- to 74-fold more abundant there than at fire-affected sites. However, none of these species-level associations remained significant after false-discovery-rate correction. Gitona distigma was nearly four-fold more abundant at fire-affected sites but likewise was not statistically validated as an indicator. These results support a persistent association between fire-related habitat transformation and drosophilid assemblage structure, while indicating that the number of fires alone did not account for heterogeneity among post-fire sites. We conclude that drosophilid assemblages respond sensitively to fire history and habitat structure, and that the species showing strong habitat associations may be useful candidates for biomonitoring post-fire forest recovery in Central European Russia, provided that the results are confirmed by more long-term and comprehensive studies. In recent years, the frequency of forest fires has increased in many regions worldwide, with many fires developing rapidly and affecting large areas. Such fires lead to profound changes in ecosystem structure and functioning. Diptera play an important role in temperate European forests and, due to their high mobility, are among the first insect groups to colonize burned areas. However, many aspects of post-fire colonization by flying insects remain insufficiently studied. The study was conducted in the Republic of Mordovia (central European Russia) during the first year after the fires of 2021. Insects were collected using beer traps baited with beer and sugar. Sampling was carried out from April to October 2022 at 11 plots. The plots differed in fire intensity, distance from the 2021 fire edge, and the degree of vegetation recovery following the fires of 2010 and 2021. In total, 44 Diptera families were identified, comprising more than 36,000 specimens. Several families were represented by more than 1000 individuals in traps, including Anthomyiidae, Bibionidae, Chloropidae, Drosophilidae, Milichiidae, Muscidae, Polleniidae, Sciaridae, and Tachinidae. The lowest numbers of individuals and families were recorded at plots located farthest from the fire boundary, i.e., at the greatest distance from unburned areas. We found that Diptera abundance in traps correlated significantly with percentage of wood debris on a plot (r = 0.71, p < 0.05), and number of herb species per plot (r = 0.76, p < 0.01). The lowest values of biodiversity indices (Shannon, Simpson, Margalef, Pielou, and Berger–Parker indices) were recorded at a plot located 1 km inside the burned area. The highest values of these indices were observed at plots situated along the fire boundary. At completely burned plots located far from the fire edge, Diptera abundance dynamics were heterogeneous. Seasonal activity of Diptera at other plots was characterized by a slight increase in abundance in May, followed by a decrease by July, and a subsequent gradual increase from August to October. Vespa orientalis is an emerging pest in southern Italy, with increasing impacts on bees in apiculture and urban environments. This study assessed the attractiveness of three bait types—beer, canned peaches, and commercial fish-based cat food—used in transparent plastic bottle traps deployed in apiary and urban sites across the Campania region. Trapping was conducted from September to October in 15 apiaries and 10 urban areas. A total of 419 hornets (V. orientalis and V. crabro) were collected. V. crabro showed a strong preference for beer-baited traps, whereas V. orientalis did not exhibit significant bait preferences, although most captures occurred in protein-baited traps. Species composition differed between environments, with V. orientalis more prevalent in urban sites. Overall, low capture rates of V. orientalis despite high presence in apiaries suggest that conventional attractant-based trapping is poorly suited for this species, highlighting the need for behaviour-based monitoring tools. Background: The Phoridae are one of the most poorly studied families of Diptera insects in Russia. They are small flies that play an important role in ecosystems. Methods: This dataset presents the results of a study on Phoridae conducted between 2019 and 2024 in European Russia. The overall study area covered 400,000 km2. Results: A total of 16,265 specimens were reliably identified, representing 272 species and 22 genera from 180 localities. Of these, 2673 specimens were females (16.4%), while the remaining 83.6% were males. Conclusions: The genus Megaselia Rondani accounted for 200 species (73.5%) and 12,120 specimens (74.5%). Ten species were particularly common: Megaselia pusilla, M. angusta agg., Triphleba opaca, Diplonevra funebris, M. brevicostalis, M. plurispinulosa, M. flavicans, M. lutea, M. minuta, and M. lactipennis. The highest number of localities was recorded for M. angusta agg. (37.2%), M. flavicans (27.8%), and M. brevicostalis (25.0%). In terms of collection methods, the majority of both specimens and species were captured using Malaise traps and pan traps. The highest species richness and specimen abundance were recorded in floodplain habitats, steppified areas, and meadows. In contrast, forested sites showed lower species diversity and abundance. Oxidative stability plays an important role in determining the quality of oxidation-sensitive foods and beverages such as beer, wine, and edible oils. Oxidation occurs through radical chain reactions producing off-flavors and leading to deterioration and decrease in the quality and nutritional value of food and beverages. In this context, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy has emerged as a powerful and selective technique for investigating reactions involving paramagnetic species, particularly free radicals and transition metal ions. This review provides a critical overview of the applications of EPR spectroscopy in the study of the oxidative stability and antioxidant activity of the above-mentioned matrices. It highlights the main methodological approaches that this technique can offer to gain insight into oxidative processes. Furthermore, current advances in low-cost and portable EPR instrumentation are discussed, along with their implications for broader adoption in both research and industry settings. The aim is to provide an up-to-date literature survey on the application of EPR spectroscopy for studying the oxidative stability and antioxidant activity of beer, wine, and edible oils, providing a methodological tool for academic and food industry researchers interested in monitoring, improving, and extending food shelf life through reliable analytical tools. In the forest ecosystems of Central European Russia, the influence of forest edges on the spatial distribution of Drosophilidae was studied for the first time. The research was conducted during the period of 2021–2022 in the Republic of Mordovia. Beer traps baited with fermented beer and sugar were used to collect Drosophilidae. Two study plots were selected, differing in their forest edges, tree stands, and adjacent open ecosystems. In both cases, the forest directly bordered an open ecosystem. Edges serve as transitional biotopes, where both forest and meadow (open area) faunas coexist. Knowing that many drosophilid species prefer forest habitats, we designated forest interior sites as control points. Traps were set at heights of 1.5 m (lower) and 7.5 m (upper) on trees. A total of 936 specimens representing 27 species were collected. Nine species were common across all traps, while ten species were recorded only once. At the forest edges, 23 species were captured across both heights, compared to 19 species in the forest interiors. However, the total abundance at the forest edges was 370 specimens, while it was 1.5 times higher in the forest interiors. Both abundance and species richness varied between plots. Margalef’s index was higher at the forest edges than in the forest interiors, particularly at 1.5 m height at the edge and at 7.5 m height in the forest interior. Shannon and Simpson indices showed minimal variation across traps at different horizontal and vertical positions. The highest species diversity was observed among xylosaprobionts (9 species) and mycetophages (8 species). All ecological groups were represented at the forest edges, whereas only four groups were recorded in the forest interiors, with the phytosaprophagous species Scaptomyza pallida being absent. In general, both species richness and drosophilid abundance increased in the lower strata, both at the forest edge and within the interior. Using the R package Indicspecies, we identified Gitona distigma as an indicator species for the forest edge and Scaptodrosophila rufifrons as an indicator for the forest interior in the lower tier for both plots. In addition, Drosophila testacea, D. phalerata, and Phortica semivirgo were found to be indicator species for the lower tier in both plots, while Leucophenga quinquemaculata was identified as an indicator species for the upper tier at the second plot. (1) Background: Phoridae is a relatively large and understudied family of Diptera. Species within this family occupy diverse ecological niches across a wide range of habitats. (2) Methods: The dataset is based on Phoridae specimens collected in the Republic of Mordovia (European Russia). Sampling was conducted from 2019 to 2024 using six collection methods: hand-held sweep nets, pitfall traps, beer traps, pan traps, Malaise traps, and window traps. (3) Results: The dataset includes 4713 occurrence records from the Republic of Mordovia, comprising a total of 15,701 Phoridae specimens. It provides data on 271 species. The highest species richness was recorded in the Mordovia State Nature Reserve (226 species, 83.4%). Fewer species were documented in the fauna of the National Park “Smolny” (177 species, 65.3%), with comparable diversity observed in other parts of the region. Ten species were dominant in the dataset (Megaselia pusilla, Triphleba opaca, Megaselia angusta agg., Diplonevra funebris, Megaselia brevicostalis, Megaselia plurispinulosa, Megaselia minuta, Megaselia lutea, Megaselia lactipennis, and Megaselia flavicans). A total of 139 species were represented by fewer than ten specimens each. Seasonal dynamics varied across habitats: in the Mordovia State Nature Reserve, both species richness and specimen abundance were already high in April, peaking in June. In contrast, in the National Park “Smolny”, peak values were observed in August. (4) Conclusions: We have listed 151 new recorded species from Russia in this list. Currently, the Phoridae fauna of the Republic of Mordovia is among the best-studied in Russia. The distribution of many species has become clearer, with the Mordovia State Nature Reserve demonstrating the highest biodiversity compared to other areas of the region. Full article

Seven lager beers and seven non-alcoholic counterparts, marketed by the same producers, were analyzed for their total phenolic content (TPC), radical scavenging activity (RSA) towards the DPPH radical and ThioBarbituric Index (TBI). All beers were also subjected to spin trapping experiments at 60 °C in the presence of PBN. To our knowledge, this is the first time that non-alcoholic beers (NABs) have been subjected to spin trapping experiments coupled with Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) spectroscopy. The evolution of the intensity of the PBN radical adducts during the first 150 min was represented graphically and the intensity at 150 min (I150) and the area under the curve (AUC), were measured. The I150 and the AUC of lagers and NABs are significantly different, whereas the TPC, the EC50 of the DPPH assay, and the TBI of the two groups are superimposed. A relationship, previously proposed by us, to correlate ESR spectroscopy parameters with others obtained from UV-Vis spectrophotometry, was also applied, demonstrating its practicability. Multivariate analysis shows that clustering in two separate groups occurs only if I150 and AUC are included in the model. Based on these results, ESR spectroscopy can be applied to study the oxidative stability of NABs. Full article

Slugs are significant agricultural pests, causing extensive crop damage and economic losses. While chemical molluscicides are commonly used for control, concerns about their environmental impact have driven interest in alternative methods, including beer traps. This study evaluated the effectiveness of different beer types as attractants for slug trapping in field conditions over two consecutive years (2022–2023). Five types of beer—Union Lager, Paulaner Weissbier, BrewDog Punk IPA, Guinness Draught, and Chimay Blue—were tested alongside ethanol (10%) and a control treatment. The results demonstrated that Paulaner Weissbier and Union Lager were the most effective attractants, followed by Guinness Draught and Chimay Blue, while BrewDog Punk IPA had moderate effectiveness. Ethanol (10%) and the control treatment failed to attract slugs, confirming that volatile compounds, rather than alcohol alone, drive slug attraction. Gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis revealed that Paulaner Weissbier contained high levels of isoamyl acetate and limonene, while Union Lager exhibited elevated ethyl esters, which likely contributed to their effectiveness. Environmental factors influenced slug activity, with higher temperatures correlating with increased slug capture rates, while precipitation had no significant effect. These findings highlight the role of fermentation-derived volatile compounds in slug attraction and suggest that optimizing beer traps based on beer composition and environmental conditions could improve their effectiveness as a non-chemical slug control method. Future research should explore the long-term stability of beer attractants, the potential of synthetic formulations, and alternative yeast-based attractants to enhance slug management strategies. (1) Background: Blattodea and Dermaptera in the temperate forest zone include a limited number of species, some of which are widely distributed and common. However, digital data on their biology remains insufficient. (2) Methods: The surveyed area extends from Kaluga Oblast to Tatarstan and from Vladimir Oblast to Voronezh Oblast. Insects were sampled from 736 plots using various methods, including pitfall traps, beer traps, window traps, pan traps, and sweep nets. (3) Results: The dataset contains 2149 occurrences comprising 18,362 specimens belonging to 5 species of Blattodea and 4 species of Dermaptera. For most occurrences, we recorded the developmental stage (nymph or adult) and the sex (male or female for adults) of the specimens. (4) Conclusions: Three non-synanthropic species are widely distributed and common: Ectobius lapponicus, E. sylvestris, and Forficula auricularia. Ectobius sylvestris is characterized as a true forest species, while E. lapponicus inhabits both forest and grassland habitats. In contrast, F. auricularia is associated with gardens, urban habitats, and some meadows. Ectobius sylvestris exhibits a more pronounced sexual dimorphism concerning the effectiveness of different sampling methods compared to E. lapponicus. Seasonal dynamics of cockroaches and earwigs are described and discussed. Full article

The increasing global energy demand, coupled with the urgent need to reduce CO2 emissions, has intensified the search for renewable energy sources. Biogas, produced from agro-industrial biomass, presents a viable solution. In beer production, brewery’s spent grain (BSG), the largest by-product by volume, offers potential for bioenergy recovery. This study applied a biorefinery approach to BSG, extracting protein hydrolysates (PH) through mild alkaline hydrolysis and nanostructured lignin (LN) via the Ionic Liquid Method. The objective was to assess biogas production from the residual biorefinery biomass and evaluate the co-digestion of BSG with Olive Mill Wastewater (OMWW) and Olive Pomace (OP), by-products of the olive oil industry. Biogas was produced in lab-scale batch reactors and the quantity of biogas produced was measured via the volumetric method. Conversely, the amount of biomethane obtained was evaluated by introducing, in the production chain, an alkaline trap. Biogas yields were the highest for untreated BSG (1075.6 mL), co-digested BSG with OMWW (1130.1 mL), and BSG residue after PH extraction (814.9 mL). The concentration of biomethane obtained in the various samples ranged from 54.5 vol % (OMWW + BSG) to 76.59 vol % (BSG). An energy balance analysis considering both the theoretical energy consumed by a semi-continuous anaerobic digestion bioreactor and the energy produced as bio-CH4 revealed that BSG after PH extraction was the most energy-efficient treatment, producing a net energy gain of 5.36 kJ. For the scope, the energy consumption was calculated by considering a PEIO index equal to 33% of the energy produced during the day, showing the highest biogas production. In contrast, the co-digested BSG with OMWW yielded the lowest net energy gain of 1.96 kJ. This comprehensive analysis highlights the energy efficiency of different treatments, identifying which process should be improved. Full article

Six different methods of catching Coleoptera used in studies of the biodiversity of regional faunas were compared. This research employed pitfall traps (PfT), beer traps (BT), freely hanging flight intercept traps or window traps (FWT), Malaise traps (MT), pan traps (PT), and sweep net (SN). The goal was to assess the effectiveness of these methods in evaluating the biodiversity of this insect group. Studies were conducted from 2011 to 2017 and 2019 to 2023 in the Ryazan region (the central part of European Russia). A total of 27,892 specimens of Coleoptera (927 species from 64 families) were collected. Specifically, 17,659 specimens were collected using PfT (396 species from 36 families), 4971 specimens using BT (146 species from 30 families), 1014 specimens using FWT (221 species from 51 families), 109 specimens using MT (43 species from 16 families), 2220 specimens using PT (357 species from 42 families), and 1919 specimens using SN (265 species from 32 families). The maximum number of families was observed with FWT, while the minimum number of families was registered with MT. Interestingly, the highest number of rare species from both protected lists was obtained using BT and PfT. The Margalef index was higher for Coleoptera collections using PT and PfT, while the largest Shannon index values were recorded for samples using SN and PT. The Berger–Parker index was the highest for catches using BT, which was characterized by the highest dominance of one or more species. In our study, four species of Coleoptera were found that are included in the protected lists of the Russian Federation and 14 species of Coleoptera were listed in the protected species of the Ryazan region. Considering the results of this study, the Coleoptera fauna of the Ryazan region currently accounts for 1674 species. Full article

Studies on saproxylic species of Coleoptera have garnered significant attention due to the rarity of some of them. To investigate the distribution and biology of Protaetia fieberi (Kraatz, 1880) (Scarabaeidae: Cetoniinae) in European Russia, we analyzed data from 16 regions collected between 2018 and 2024. This species has been reliably recorded in 26 regions. We describe the species’ distribution area boundaries and discuss limiting factors that inhibit its spread to the north, south, and southeast of European Russia. The primary limiting factor is the lack of suitable biotopes. Within its distribution, Protaetia fieberi prefers deciduous and mixed forests of various types. These habitats include both old-growth forest ecosystems and secondary forests that have regenerated following logging. The species also inhabits man-made forest ecosystems, such as field protection forest belts, old parks, and gardens. In forest ecosystems, Protaetia fieberi tends to occupy the upper levels and is rarely found on the ground layer. Conversely, in open areas such as glades, the species is more commonly found at ground level. This distribution pattern is linked to the adults’ feeding preferences, which include consuming sap on tree trunks in forests and feeding on flowering plants in open ecosystems. The seasonal activity of Protaetia fieberi peaks from the third decade of June to the second decade of July. It is hypothesized that the perceived rarity of Protaetia fieberi in research samples is due to the specific baiting methods used, with beer traps being the most effective. The status of the species is re-evaluated in light of new data, suggesting that Protaetia fieberi is common rather than rare in European Russia. Full article

Our study focuses on the investigation of the ecological aspects (seasonal dynamics, height distribution, and preference of biotopes) of six species within the genus Panorpa (P. alpina Rambur, 1842, P. cognata Rambur, 1842, P. communis Linnaeus, 1758, P. germanica Linnaeus, 1758, P. hybrida MacLachlan, 1882, and P. vulgaris Imhoff & Labram, 1845). The observed seasonal dynamics predominantly display a monovoltine nature. P. communis was active from the early days of May, with individuals persisting until the beginning of October. Conversely, P. vulgaris exhibits activity from the third decade of May to mid-September. P. hybrida manifests within a concise timeframe, observed from late May to late July. P. cognata demonstrates activity commencing in early May, with individuals observed until the end of September. Within forest environments, the highest population density of all species is concentrated at a height of 1.5 m above ground level, whereas the minimum population density is recorded at a height of 12 m above ground level. P. vulgaris demonstrates comparable abundance across heights ranging from 1.5 to 7.5 m, whereas P. hybrida exhibits uniform distribution solely at heights of 1.5 and 3.5 m. Furthermore, the abundance of P. communis surpasses that at other heights when observed at the height of 1.5 m. Panorpa specimens exhibit an absence in open ecosystems at heights of 8 and 10 m. The peak of population density for all species is consistently identified at heights of 2 and 4 m. The application of six diverse entomological methodologies leads to optimal outcomes. Our investigations reveal that P. communis, P. vulgaris, and P. hybrida display greater attraction to beer traps, while P. cognata exhibits a comparatively diminished propensity for such traps. P. cognata, in contrast, demonstrates a substantial presence in pan traps and pitfall traps. In Malaise traps, pan traps, and pitfall traps, five distinct species were captured, although with a species composition differing from alternative methods. To sum up, for the comprehensive study of Panorpa across an expansive geographical spectrum, it is judicious to integrate both net captures and the use of diverse trap types. In addition, it is necessary to explore all biotopes and tiers of the forest. Full article

Fires can significantly impact forest ecosystems. However, studies on the effects of fires on insect communities in post-fire plots in natural forests are rare. This study presents an analysis of the Coleoptera fauna in the forests of the Mordovia State Nature Reserve (European Russia) in 2022 and 2023 after a fire. Insects were sampled from burned plots (9) in 2010 and 2021, as well as unburned (control) plots (2), and alpha diversity was compared. After processing the material, we examined a total of 12,218 Coleoptera specimens from 38 families and identified 194 species. The families Nitidulidae, Cerambycidae, Elateridae, and Scarabaeidae were the most abundant across all plots. Cerambycidae, Elateridae, Nitidulidae, Staphylinidae, Coccinellidae, and Scarabaeidae exhibited the greatest species diversity. In total, 17 species were found on all plots, including Cetonia aurata, Protaetia cuprea volhyniensis, Trogoderma glabrum, Carpophilus hemipterus, Epuraea biguttata, Glischrochilus grandis, Glischrochilus hortensis, Glischrochilus quadripunctatus, Soronia grisea, Pediacus depressus, Chrysanthia geniculata, Anastrangalia reyi, Leptura quadrifasciata, Leptura thoracica, Lepturalia nigripes, Rhagium mordax, and Anisandrus dispar. Only five species exhibited preferences for certain plots. Maximum abundance and species diversity were observed on unburned (control) plots. The plots where fires occurred in 2010 and 2021 had the lowest total abundance values for Coleoptera. These fires destroyed almost all potential sites for beetle settlement, feeding, breeding, and shelter. Traps recorded a higher abundance of Coleoptera in the first year after fires compared to the second year. The Coleoptera fauna showed the greatest similarity on the control plots. Full article
