The advanced determination of the type (foreshock–aftershock–swarm) of an ongoing seismic cluster is quite challenging; only retrospective solutions have thus far been proposed. In the period of January–March 2025, a seismic cluster, recorded between Santorini volcano and Amorgos Island, South Aegean Sea, caused considerable social concern. A rapid increase in both the seismicity rate and the earthquake magnitudes was noted until the mainshock of ML = 5.3 on 10 February; afterwards, activity gradually diminished. Fault-plane solutions indicated SW-NE normal faulting. The epicenters moved with a mean velocity of ~0.72 km/day from SW to NE up to the mainshock area at a distance of ~25 km. Crucial questions publicly emerged during the cluster. Was it a foreshock–aftershock activity or a swarm of possibly volcanic origin? We performed real-time discrimination of the cluster type based on a daily re-evaluation of the space–time–magnitude changes and their significance relative to background seismicity using earthquake statistics and the topological metric betweenness centrality. Our findings were periodically documented during the ongoing cluster starting from the fourth cluster day (2 February 2025), at which point we determined that it was a foreshock and not a case of seismic swarm. The third day after the ML = 5.3 mainshock, a typical aftershock decay was detected. The observed foreshock properties favored a cascade mechanism, likely facilitated by non-volcanic material softening and the likely subdiffusion processes in a dense fault network. This mechanism was possibly combined with an aseismic nucleation process if transient geodetic deformation was present. No significant aftershock expansion towards the NE was noted, possibly due to the presence of a geometrical fault barrier east of the Anydros Ridge. The 2025 activity offered an excellent opportunity to investigate deciphering the type of ongoing seismicity cluster for real-time discrimination between foreshocks, aftershocks, and swarms. As an important ecological barrier and animal husbandry resource base in arid and semi-arid areas, grassland degradation directly affects regional ecological security and sustainable development. Ili Prefecture is located in the western part of Xinjiang, China, and is a typical grassland resource-rich area. However, in recent years, driven by climate change and human activities, grassland degradation has become increasingly serious. In view of the lack of comprehensive evaluation indicators and the inconsistency of grassland evaluation grade standards in remote sensing monitoring of grassland resource degradation, this study takes the current situation of grassland degradation in Ili Prefecture in the past 20 years as the research object and constructs a comprehensive evaluation index system covering three criteria layers of vegetation characteristics, environmental characteristics, and utilization characteristics. Net primary productivity (NPP), vegetation coverage, temperature, precipitation, soil erosion modulus, and grazing intensity were selected as multi-source indicators. Combined with data sources such as remote sensing inversion, sample survey, meteorological data, and farmer survey, the factor weight coefficient was determined by analytic hierarchy process. The Grassland Degeneration Comprehensive Index (GDCI) model was constructed to carry out remote sensing monitoring and evaluation of grassland degradation in Yili Prefecture. With reference to the classification threshold of the national standard for grassland degradation, the GDCI grassland degradation evaluation grade threshold (GDCI reduction rate) was determined by the method of weighted average of coefficients: non-degradation (0–10%), mild degradation (10–20%), moderate degradation (20–37.66%) and severe degradation (more than 37.66%). According to the results, between 2000 and 2022, non-degraded grasslands in Ili Prefecture covered an area of 27,200 km2, representing 90.19% of the total grassland area. Slight, moderate, and severe degradation accounted for 4.34%, 3.33%, and 2.15%, respectively. Moderately and severely degraded areas are primarily distributed in agro-pastoral transition zones and economically developed urban regions, respectively. The results revealed the spatial and temporal distribution characteristics of grassland degradation in Yili Prefecture and provided data basis and technical support for regional grassland resource management, degradation prevention and control and ecological restoration. The logistics industry faces challenges from evolving consumer expectations, technological advances, sustainability demands, and market disruptions. Logistics collaboration is in theory perceived as one of the most promising solutions to solve these issues, but here are still a lot of challenges that needs to be better understood and addressed. While vertical collaboration among supply chain actors is well advanced, horizontal collaboration among competing service providers remains under-explored. This study developed a novel methodology based on the COM-B behaviour-change framework to better understand the main challenges, opportunities, capabilities and drivers that would motivate competing companies to exploit the potential of horizontal logistics collaboration. A survey was designed and conducted among 71 logistics service providers in Slovenia, chosen for its fragmented market and low willingness to collaborate. Statistical analysis reveals cost reduction (M = 4.21/5) and improved vehicle utilization (M = 4.29/5) as the primary motivators. On the other hand, maintaining company reputation (M = 4.64/5), fair resource sharing (M = 4.20/5), and transparency of logistics processes (M = 4.17/5) all persist as key enabling conditions. These findings underscore the pivotal role of behavioural drivers and suggest strategies that combine economic incentives with targeted trust-building measures. Future research should employ experimental designs in diverse national contexts and integrate vertical–horizontal approaches to validate causal pathways and advance theory. Full article

Gut microbiota-derived trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) has been implicated in both intestinal and renal diseases; however, its specific role in modulating gut–kidney interactions remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the effects of TMAO on gut–kidney crosstalk using a mouse model of diarrhea. Mice were divided into four groups: normal, model, TMAO, and TMAO + model. The normal group received sterile water, while the other groups were administered adenine + Folium sennae, TMAO, or a combination of TMAO and adenine + Folium sennae. Samples were collected to assess morphological changes in the colon and kidney, evaluate the colonic mucosal barrier and renal function, and measure NLRP3 inflammasome activity and inflammatory cytokine levels in colonic and renal tissues. TMAO levels and the gut microbiota composition were analyzed using 16S rRNA sequencing. The model group exhibited altered stool morphology, which was further aggravated by TMAO intervention. Both the model and TMAO + model groups exhibited significant damage to intestinal and renal tissues, along with compromised intestinal mucosal barriers and impaired renal function compared to controls. Inflammatory markers were elevated in these groups, with the TMAO + model group showing the most pronounced increases. Correlation analysis indicated significant relationships among TMAO levels, inflammasome activation, and inflammatory cytokines. The genera Mucispirillum and Anaerotruncus negatively correlated with TMAO, whereas Parabacteroides and Parasutterella genera positively correlated with TMAO. In conclusion, TMAO plays a critical role in modulating gut–kidney crosstalk by promoting inflammation, disrupting mucosal and renal integrity, and altering the gut microbial ecosystem. Full article

Agrarian women are at the forefront of rural livelihoods increasingly affected by the frequency and severity of climate change impacts. However, their household livelihood resilience (HLR) remains limited due to gender-blind policies, scarce sex-disaggregated data, and inadequate consideration of gender-specific needs in resilience-building efforts. Grounded in participatory feminist research, this study employed a multi-method qualitative approach, including semi-structured interviews and oral history narratives, with 60 women in two climate-vulnerable provinces. Data were analyzed through thematic coding, CATWOE (Customers, Actors, Transformation, Worldview, Owners, Environmental Constraints) analysis, and descriptive statistics. The findings identify nine major climate-related events disrupting livelihoods and reveal a limited understanding of HLR as a long-term, transformative concept. Adaptation strategies remain short-term and focused on immediate survival. Barriers to HLR include financial constraints, limited access to agricultural resources and technology, and entrenched gender norms restricting women’s leadership and decision-making. While local governments, women’s associations, and community networks provide some support, gaps in accessibility and adequacy persist. Participants expressed the need for financial assistance, vocational training, agricultural technologies, and stronger peer networks. Strengthening HLR among agrarian women requires gender-sensitive policies, investment in local support systems, and community-led initiatives. Empowering agrarian women as agents of change is critical for fostering resilient rural livelihoods and achieving inclusive, sustainable development. Full article

The swift advancements in autonomous vehicle systems have facilitated their implementation across various industries, including agriculture. However, studies primarily focus on passenger vehicles, with fewer examining autonomous trucks. Therefore, this study reviews autonomous truck systems implementation in North Dakota’s agricultural industry to develop comprehensive technology readiness frameworks and strategic deployment approaches. The review integrates systematic literature review and event history analysis of 52 studies, categorized using Social–Ecological–Technological Systems framework across six dimensions: technological, economic, social change, legal, environmental, and implementation challenges. The Technology Readiness Level (TRL) analysis reveals 39.5% of technologies achieving commercial readiness (TRL 8–9), including GPS/RTK positioning and V2V communication demonstrated through Minn-Dak Farmers Cooperative deployments, while gaps exist in TRL 4–6 technologies, particularly cold-weather operations. Nonetheless, challenges remain, including legislative fragmentation, inadequate rural infrastructure, and barriers to public acceptance. The study provides evidence-based recommendations that support a strategic three-phase deployment approach for the adoption of autonomous trucks in agriculture. Full article

How do regulatory policies, funding structures, and cross-sector coordination shape knowledge flows and institutional transformation? Focusing on the smart medical device sector in Taiwan, this study explores how governance dynamics accelerate system transformation and foster demand for adaptive and integrative innovation systems. Building on the National Biotechnology Innovation System framework and qualitative system dynamics modeling, the study analyzes institutional interactions through 28 semi-structured interviews and 18 policy documents. Findings identify systemic bottlenecks, including translational gaps, coordination challenges, and barriers for traditional manufacturers. These gaps have enabled tech firms to emerge as system leaders by bridging these institutional gaps. This study extends innovation systems theory by conceptualizing an emergent governance function that addresses institutional gaps. At the policy level, the study highlights the importance of enabling institutional change in governance to address structural fragmentation and support system-wide transformation. Full article

Influence of Membrane Composition on the Passive Membrane Penetration of Industrially Relevant NSO-Heterocycles

This study investigates how phospholipid headgroups influence passive membrane penetration and structural impact of four nitrogen-, sulfur-, and oxygen-containing heterocycles (NSO-HETs)—N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (PIR), 1,4-dioxane (DIOX), oxane (OXA), and phenol (PHE). Using all-atom molecular dynamics simulations combined with Accelerated Weight Histogram free energy calculations, the passive transport of NSO-HETs across DPPC, DPPE, DPPA, and DPPG bilayers was characterized. DPPG showed the highest membrane affinity, increasing permeability (logPmemb/bulk) by 27–64% compared to DPPE, associated with the lowest permeability and tightest lipid packing. Free energy barriers are also decreased in DPPG relative to DPPE; PIR’s central barrier dropped from 19.2 kJ/mol (DPPE) to 16.6 kJ/mol (DPPG), while DIOX’s barrier decreased from 7.2 to 5.2 kJ/mol. OXA exhibited the lowest central barriers (1.2–2.2 kJ/mol) and uniquely accumulated at higher concentrations in the bilayer center than in bulk water, with free energy ranging from −3.4 to −5.9 kJ/mol. PHE and OXA caused significant bilayer thinning (up to 11%) and reduced lipid tail order, especially in DPPE and DPPA. Concentration effects were most pronounced in DPPE, where high solute loading disrupted lipid order and altered free energy profiles. These results highlight the crucial role of headgroup identity in modulating NSO-HET membrane permeability and structural changes. Full article

Although Hylocereus polyrhizus pulp residues polysaccharides (HPPP) have shown potential in improving metabolic disorders and intestinal barrier function, the mechanism by which they exert their effects through regulating O-glycosylation modifications in the mucus layer remains unclear. Therefore, this study established a HFD-induced obese colitis mouse model (n = 5 per group) and combined nano-capillary liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (nanoLC-MS/MS) technology to quantitatively analyze the dynamic changes in O-glycosylation. Additionally, through quantitative O-glycosylation proteomics and whole-proteome analysis, we identified 155 specifically altered O-glycosylation sites in colon tissue, with the glycosylation modification level of the MUC2 core protein increased by approximately 2.1-fold. The results indicate that HPPP alleviates colonic mucosal damage by regulating interactions between mucus O-glycosylation. Overall, we demonstrated that HPPP increases HFD-induced O-glycosylation sites, improves intestinal mucosal structure in obese mice, and provides protective effects against obesity-induced intestinal mucosal damage. This study investigates the foundational causes of unsustainability that obstruct efforts to address global challenges such as climate change, environmental degradation, water crises, and public health deterioration. Using qualitative research with in-depth expert interviews from education, environmental studies, and business, it finds that these global challenges, while visible on the surface, are deeply rooted in worldviews that shape human behavior, societal structures, and policies. Building on this insight, the thematic analysis manifests three interrelated systemic paradigms as the fundamental drivers of unsustainability: a crisis of wholeness, reflected in fragmented identities and collective disorientation; a disconnection from nature, shaped by human-centered perspectives; and the influence of dominant political-economic systems which prioritize growth logics over ecological and social concerns. These paradigms underlie both structural and cognitive barriers to systemic transformation, which influence the design and implementation of education for sustainability. By clarifying a body of knowledge and systemic paradigms regarding unsustainability, this paper calls for transformative education that promotes a holistic, value-based approach, eco-empathy, and critical thinking, aiming to equip future generations with the tools to challenge and transform unsustainable systems. Transportation is often cited as a significant barrier to healthcare access by Veterans, particularly those from minority groups, who have disabilities, or live in rural areas. Autonomous shuttles (AS) offer a potential solution, yet limited research has explored Veterans’ experiences with this technology. This study qualitatively investigated Veterans’ lived experiences with AS through focus groups, enrolling participants aged 18+ from Gainesville, The Villages, and Lake Nona, Florida. Via a directed content analysis, six key themes were identified: Perceived Benefits, Safety, Experience with Autonomous Vehicles (AV), AS Experience, AV Adoption, and Perception Change. Among 26 participants (aged 30–85; 77% men; 88% urban residents), prominent themes included Safety (n = 161), Perceived Benefits (n = 153), and AS Experience (n = 118), with predominantly positive counts in all themes except AS Experience. Participants acknowledged safety advantages and multitasking potential of AS over human-operated vehicles while recommending improvements to the shuttle’s slow speed, availability and convenience. While the AS ride was positively received overall, some participants noted issues with comfort and braking, emphasizing the need for further technological enhancements. Real-world exposure to AS appeared to influence acceptance positively, offering insights for policymakers and industry stakeholders aiming to optimize AS deployment for mobility-vulnerable Veterans. Oral health during pregnancy is essential for maternal and child well-being, as hormonal and physiological changes increase women’s susceptibility to oral diseases. Despite the recognized importance of prenatal dental care, adherence to dental services remains a challenge in the public health context. This study aimed to analyze oral health and the use of dental services during pregnancy through the perception of pregnant women. It represents the qualitative phase of a mixed-method study conducted with 25 pregnant women (with and without dental care) receiving prenatal care in the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS). Participants were selected through saturation sampling, and data were collected via semi-structured interviews, followed by content analysis. The findings revealed four major themes: barriers and facilitators to dental care, changes during pregnancy and oral health. Discomfort from oral changes was a common concern. Barriers included misinformation, fear, cultural beliefs, and service organization. In contrast, facilitating factors were identified, such as care prioritization, support from healthcare teams, health education, and access through SUS. This study concludes that emotional, cultural, and contextual aspects shape the use of dental services during pregnancy. Access through SUS is perceived as an important facilitator, which simultaneously presents organizational weaknesses that need to be addressed. Full article

Cancer disparities in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) arise from multifaceted interactions between environmental exposures, infectious agents, and systemic inequities, such as limited access to care. The exposome, a framework encompassing the totality of non-genetic exposures throughout life, offers a powerful lens for understanding these disparities. In LMICs, populations are disproportionately affected by air and water pollution, occupational hazards, and oncogenic infections, including human papillomavirus (HPV), hepatitis B virus (HBV), Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and neglected tropical diseases, such as schistosomiasis. These infectious agents contribute to increased cancer susceptibility and poor outcomes, particularly in immunocompromised individuals. Moreover, climate change, food insecurity, and barriers to healthcare access exacerbate these risks. This review adopts a population-level exposome approach to explore how environmental and infectious exposures intersect with genetic, epigenetic, and immune mechanisms to influence cancer incidence and progression in LMICs. We highlight the critical pathways linking chronic exposure and inflammation to tumor development and evaluate strategies such as HPV and HBV vaccination, antiretroviral therapy, and environmental regulation. Special attention is given to tools such as exposome-wide association studies (ExWASs), which offer promise for exposure surveillance, early detection, and public health policy. By integrating exposomic insights into national health systems, especially in regions such as sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) and South Asia, LMICs can advance equitable cancer prevention and control strategies. A holistic, exposome-informed strategy is essential for reducing global cancer disparities and improving outcomes in vulnerable populations. Full article

Heat Risk Perception and Vulnerability in Puerto Rico: Insights for Climate Adaptation in the Caribbean

Extreme heat poses growing health risks in tropical regions, yet public perception of this threat remains understudied in the Caribbean. This study examines how residents in Puerto Rico perceived heat-related health risks and how these perceptions relate to vulnerability and protective behaviors during the extreme heat events of the summer of 2020. We conducted a cross-sectional telephone survey of 500 adults across metropolitan and non-metropolitan areas of Puerto Rico, using stratified probability sampling. The questionnaire assessed heat risk perception, sociodemographic characteristics, health status, prior heat exposure, and heat-related behaviors. While most participants expressed concern about climate change and high temperatures, fewer than half perceived heat as a high level of personal health risk. Higher levels of risk perception were significantly associated with being male, aged 50–64, unemployed, and in fair health, having multiple chronic conditions, and prior experience with heat-related symptoms. Those with symptoms were nearly five times more likely to report high levels of risk perception (OR = 4.94, 95% CI: 2.93–8.34). In contrast, older adults (65+), despite their higher level of vulnerability, reported lower levels of risk perception and fewer symptoms. Nighttime heat exposure was widespread and strongly associated with heat-related symptoms. Common coping strategies included the use of fans and air conditioning, though economic constraints and infrastructure instability limited access. The findings highlight the disparity between actual and perceived vulnerability, particularly among older adults. Public health strategies should focus on risk communication tailored to vulnerable groups and address barriers to heat adaptation. Strengthening heat resilience in Puerto Rico requires improved infrastructure, equitable access to cooling, and targeted outreach. Full article

Background/Objectives: Endometriosis is a chronic, estrogen-driven gynecological disorder affecting approximately 10% of reproductive-aged women worldwide, with significant physical, psychosocial, and socioeconomic impacts. Recent research suggests a possible involvement of the gut microbiome in endometriosis disease mechanisms through immune manipulation, estrogen metabolism, and inflammatory networks. This narrative review aims to summarize current evidence on gut microbiota changes in endometriosis patients, explore the mechanisms by which gut dysbiosis contributes to disease progression, and examine epidemiological links between gastrointestinal health and endometriosis risk. Methods: A narrative review was conducted to synthesize available literature on the compositional changes in gut microbiota associated with endometriosis. The review also evaluated studies investigating potential mechanisms and epidemiological patterns connecting gut health with endometriosis development and severity. Results: Alterations in gut microbiota composition were observed in endometriosis patients, suggesting roles in immune dysregulation, estrogen metabolism, and inflammation. Potential gut-oriented interventions, including dietary changes, probiotics, and lifestyle modifications, emerged as promising management options. However, methodological variability and research gaps remain barriers to clinical translation. Conclusions: Integrating gut microbiome research into endometriosis management holds potential for improving early diagnosis, patient outcomes, and healthcare system sustainability. The study emphasizes the need for further research to address existing challenges and to develop public health strategies that incorporate microbiome-based interventions in population-level endometriosis care.
