Long-range underwater gliders (LRUGs) have emerged as essential platforms for sustained and autonomous observation in deep and remote marine environments. This paper provides a comprehensive review of their developmental status, performance characteristics, and application progress. Emphasis is placed on two critical enabling technologies that fundamentally determine endurance: lightweight, pressure-resistant hull structures and high-efficiency buoyancy-driven propulsion systems. First, the role of carbon fiber composite pressure hulls in enhancing energy capacity and structural integrity is examined, with attention to material selection, fabrication methods, compressibility compatibility, and antifouling resistance. Second, the evolution of buoyancy control systems is analyzed, covering the transition to hybrid active–passive architectures, rapid-response actuators based on smart materials, thermohaline energy harvesting, and energy recovery mechanisms. Based on this analysis, the paper identifies four key technical challenges and proposes strategic research directions, including the development of ultralight, high-strength structural materials; integrated multi-mechanism antifouling technologies; energy-optimized coordinated buoyancy systems; and thermally adaptive glider platforms. Achieving a system architecture with ultra-long endurance, enhanced energy efficiency, and robust environmental adaptability is anticipated to be a foundational enabler for future long-duration missions and globally distributed underwater glider networks. As the penetration of intermittent renewable energy sources continues to increase, ensuring reliable power system and frequency stability is of importance. Battery energy storage systems (BESSs) have emerged as an important solution to mitigate these challenges by providing essential grid support services. In this context, a state-of-charge (SOC)-frequency control strategy for grid-forming BESSs is proposed to enhance their role in stabilizing grid frequency and improving overall system performance. In the system, the DC-link capacitor is regulated to maintain the angular frequency through a matching control scheme, emulating the characteristics of the rotor dynamics of a synchronous generator (SG). Thereby, the active power control is implemented in the control of the DC/DC converter to further regulate the grid frequency. More specifically, the relationship between the active power and the frequency is established through the SOC of the battery. In addition, owing to the inevitable presence of differential operators in the control loop, a high-gain observer (HGO) is employed, and the corresponding parameter design of the proposed method is elaborated. The proposed strategy simultaneously achieves frequency regulation and implicit energy management by autonomously balancing power output with available battery capacity, demonstrating a novel dual benefit for sustainable grid operation. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy, a 0.5-Hz frequency change and a 10% power change are carried out through simulations and also on a hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) platform. The accelerating integration of electric vehicles (EVs) into contemporary transportation infrastructure has underscored significant limitations in traditional charging paradigms, particularly in accommodating heterogeneous user requirements within dynamic operational environments. This study presents a differentiated optimization framework for EV charging strategies through the systematic classification of user types. A multidimensional decision-making environment is established for three representative user categories—residential, commercial, and industrial—by synthesizing time-variant electricity pricing models with dynamic carbon emission pricing mechanisms. A bi-level optimization architecture is subsequently formulated, leveraging deep reinforcement learning (DRL) to capture user-specific demand characteristics through customized reward functions and adaptive constraint structures. Validation is conducted within a high-fidelity simulation environment featuring 90 autonomous EV charging agents operating in a metropolitan parking facility. Empirical results indicate that the proposed typology-driven approach yields a 32.6% average cost reduction across user groups relative to baseline charging protocols, with statistically significant improvements in expenditure optimization (p < 0.01). Further interpretability analysis employing gradient-weighted class activation mapping (Grad-CAM) demonstrates that the model’s attention mechanisms are well aligned with theoretically anticipated demand prioritization patterns across the distinct user types, thereby confirming the decision-theoretic soundness of the framework. This study proposes an intelligent patrol planning framework that leverages reinforcement learning, spatiotemporal crime forecasting, and simulated sensor telemetry to optimize autonomous vehicle (AV) navigation in urban environments. Crime incidents from Washington DC (2024–2025) and Seattle (2008–2024) are modeled as a dynamic spatiotemporal graph, capturing the evolving intensity and distribution of criminal activity across neighborhoods and time windows. The agent’s state space incorporates synthetic AV sensor inputs—including fuel level, visual anomaly detection, and threat signals—to reflect real-world operational constraints. We evaluate and compare three learning strategies: Deep Q-Network (DQN), Double Deep Q-Network (DDQN), and Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO). Experimental results show that DDQN outperforms DQN in convergence speed and reward accumulation, while PPO demonstrates greater adaptability in sensor-rich, high-noise conditions. Real-map simulations and hourly risk heatmaps validate the effectiveness of our approach, highlighting its potential to inform scalable, data-driven patrol strategies in next-generation smart cities. Background: Preterm infants and their families face a challenging experience during their stay in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Family-centered care emphasizes the importance of welcoming parents, involving them in their baby’s daily care, and supporting the development of parenting skills. NICU staff should support parents in understanding their baby’s needs and in strengthening the parent–infant bond. Although many tools outline what parents should learn, there is a limited structured framework to monitor their involvement in the infant’s care. Tracking parental participation in daily caregiving activities could support professionals in effectively guiding families, ensuring a smoother transition to discharge. Aims: The aim of this study was to evaluate the adherence to and effectiveness of a structured tool for parental involvement in the NICU. This tool serves several key purposes: to track the progression and timing of parents’ autonomy in caring for their baby, to support parents in building caregiving competencies before discharge, and to standardize the approach of NICU professionals in promoting both infant care and family engagement. Methods: A structured template form for documenting parental involvement (“together TO-CARE template”, TTCT) was integrated into the computerized chart adopted in the NICU of Modena. Nurses were asked to complete the TTCT at each shift. The template included the following assessment items: parental presence; type of contact with the baby (touch; voice; skin-to-skin); parental involvement in care activities (diaper changing; gavage feeding; bottle feeding; breast feeding); and level of autonomy in care (observer; supported by nurse; autonomous). We evaluated TTCT uploaded data for very low birth weight (VLBW) preterm infants admitted in the Modena NICU between 1 January 2023 and 31 December 2024. Staff compliance in filling out the TTCT was assessed. The timing at which parents achieved autonomy in different care tasks was also measured. Results: The TTCT was completed with an average of one entry per day, during the NICU stay. Parents reached full autonomy in diaper changing at a mean of 21.1 ± 15.3 days and in bottle feeding at a mean of 48.0 ± 22.4 days after admission. The mean length of hospitalization was 53 ± 38 days. Conclusions: The adoption of the TTCT in the NICU is feasible and should become a central component of care for preterm infants. It promotes family-centered care by addressing the needs of both the baby and the family. Encouraging early and progressive parental involvement enhances parenting skills, builds confidence, and may help reduce post-discharge complications and readmissions. Furthermore, the use of a standardized template aims to foster consistency among NICU staff, reduce disparities in care delivery, and strengthen the support provided to families of preterm infants. Background/Objectives: The aim was to identify patterns of autonomic and neuroendocrine reactivity to an immersive virtual reality (VR) social-emotional stressor and explore their associations with perceived stress and eating behavior. Methods: This one-group pretest–posttest study included 30 children and adolescents with obesity (15 boys and 15 girls), aged 8 to 17 years. The VR protocol consisted of two consecutive phases: a 5 min relaxation phase using the Forest application and a 5 min stimulation phase using a cognitively engaging VR game designed to elicit social-emotional stress. Physiological responses were measured using heart rate variability (HRV) indices and salivary stress biomarkers, including cortisol and alpha amylase. Subjective stress and eating responses were assessed via visual analogue scales (VAS) administered immediately post-exposure. The Three-Factor Eating Questionnaire (TFEQ-R21C) was used to evaluate cognitive restraint (CR), uncontrolled eating (UE), and emotional eating (EE). Results: The cortisol reactivity was blunted and may reflect both the attenuated HPA axis responsiveness characteristic of pediatric obesity and the moderate psychological challenge of the VR stressor used in this study. Two distinct autonomic response patterns were identified via exploratory factor analysis: (1) parasympathetic reactivity, associated with increased RMSSD and SDNN and decreased LF/HF, and (2) sympathetic activation, associated with increased heart rate and alpha-amylase levels and reduced RR intervals. Parasympathetic reactivity was correlated with lower perceived stress and anxiety, but also paradoxically with higher uncontrolled eating (UE). In contrast, sympathetic activation was associated with greater cognitive restraint (CR) and higher anxiety ratings. Conclusions: This study demonstrates that immersive VR game exposure elicits measurable autonomic and subjective stress responses in children and adolescents with obesity, and that individual differences in physiological reactivity are relevantly associated with eating behavior traits. The findings suggest that parasympathetic and sympathetic profiles may represent distinct behavioral patterns with implications for targeted intervention. Full article

Background/Objectives: Despite the health benefit of regular physical activity, many adults often discontinue it within 3–6 months due to various obstacles. The purpose of this study was to investigate factors affecting physical activity adherence of male office workers based on self-determination theory by constructing a structural equation model. Methods: In total, 257 full-time male office workers who engage in regular physical activity participated. The participants from 15 companies completed a survey asking about perceived physical activity barriers, autonomy support, psychological need satisfaction in physical activity, autonomous motivation, and physical activity adherence. Data analysis was performed using the SPSS 28.0 and the AMOS 26.0 programs to verify the fit of the hypothetical model and identify the direct and indirect effects of variables on physical activity adherence for male office workers. Results: As a result, the path significance test results for the hypothetical model showed that five of the nine paths were significant. The results show that psychological need satisfaction in physical activity and autonomous motivation were significant variables that had a direct effect on physical activity adherence, while autonomy support from significant others and perceived physical activity barriers had a significant indirect effect through psychological need satisfaction and autonomous motivation, explaining 62.0%. Conclusions: Based on these findings, it is recommended to implement customized workplace-specific physical activity interventions to enhance autonomous motivation and the autonomy, competence, and relatedness aspects of psychological need satisfaction in physical activity. Addressing lateral-directional control challenges during unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) landing in complex wind fields, this study proposes a drift angle control strategy that integrates coordinated heading and trajectory regulation. An adaptive radius optimization method for the Dubins approach path is designed using wind speed estimation. By developing a wind-coupled flight dynamics model, we establish a roll angle control loop combining the L1 nonlinear guidance law with Linear Active Disturbance Rejection Control (LADRC). Simulation tests against conventional sideslip approach and crab approach, along with flight tests, confirm that the proposed autonomous landing system achieves smoother attitude transitions during landing while meeting all touchdown performance requirements. This solution provides a theoretically rigorous and practically viable approach for safe UAV landings in challenging wind conditions. Full article

Background/Objectives: Respectful maternity care involves privacy, dignity, and informed choice within the process of delivery as stipulated by the World Health Organization (WHO). Informed consent is a cornerstone of patient-centered care, representing not just a formal document, but an ongoing ethical and clinical process through which women are offered objective, understandable information to support autonomous, informed decision-making. Methods: This narrative review critically examines the literature on informed consent in maternity care, with particular attention to both obstetric-led and midwifery-led models of care. In addition to identifying institutional, cultural, and systemic obstacles to its successful implementation, the review examines the definition and application of informed consent in perinatal settings and evaluates its effects on women’s autonomy and satisfaction with care. Results: Important conclusions emphasize that improving women’s experiences and minimizing needless interventions require active decision-making participation, a positive provider–patient relationship, and ongoing support from medical professionals. However, significant gaps persist between legal mandates and actual practice due to provider attitudes, systemic constraints, and sociocultural influences. Women’s experiences of consent can be more effectively understood through the use of instruments such as the Mothers’ Respect (MOR) Index and the Mothers’ Autonomy in Decision Making (MADM) Scale. Conclusions: To promote genuinely informed and considerate maternity care, this review emphasizes the necessity of legislative reform and improved provider education in order to close the gap between policy and practice. Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP) is a leading cause of mortality among individuals with epilepsy, particularly those with drug-resistant forms. This review explores the complex multisystem mechanisms underpinning SUDEP, integrating recent findings on brain, cardiac, and pulmonary dysfunctions. Background/Objectives: The main objective of this review is to elucidate how seizures disrupt critical physiological systems, especially the brainstem, heart, and lungs, contributing to SUDEP, with emphasis on respiratory control failure and autonomic instability. Methods: The literature from experimental models, clinical observations, neuroimaging studies, and genetic analyses was systematically examined. Results: SUDEP is frequently preceded by generalized tonic–clonic seizures, which trigger central and obstructive apnea, hypoventilation, and cardiac arrhythmias. Brainstem dysfunction, particularly in areas such as the pre-Bötzinger complex and nucleus tractus solitarius, plays a central role. Genetic mutations affecting ion channels (e.g., SCN1A, KCNQ1) and neurotransmitter imbalances (notably serotonin and GABA) exacerbate autonomic dysregulation. Risk is compounded by a prone sleeping position, reduced arousal capacity, and impaired ventilatory responses. Conclusions: SUDEP arises from a cascade of interrelated failures in respiratory and cardiac regulation initiated by seizure activity. The recognition of modifiable risk factors, implementation of monitoring technologies, and targeted therapies such as serotonergic agents may reduce mortality. Multidisciplinary approaches integrating neurology, cardiology, and respiratory medicine are essential for effective prevention strategies. Full article

The electromechanical braking (EMB) system is an important component of intelligent vehicles and is also the core actuator for longitudinal dynamic control in autonomous driving motion control. Therefore, we propose a new mechanism layout form for EMB and a feedforward second-order linear active disturbance rejection controller based on clamping force. This solves the problem of excessive axial distance in traditional EMB and reduces the axial distance by 30%, while concentrating the PCB control board for the wheels on the EMB housing. This enables the ABS and ESP functions to be integrated into the EMB system, further enhancing the integration of line control and active safety functions. A feedforward second-order linear active disturbance rejection controller (LADRC) based on the clamping force of the brake caliper is proposed. Compared with the traditional clamping force control methods three-loop PID and adaptive fuzzy PID, it improves the response speed, steady-state error, and anti-interference ability. Moreover, the LADRC has more advantages in parameter adjustment. Simulation results show that the response speed is increased by 130 ms, the overshoot is reduced by 9.85%, and the anti-interference ability is increased by 41.2%. Finally, the feasibility of this control algorithm was verified through the EMB hardware-in-the-loop test bench. Full article

Microglia, as the immune guardians of the central nervous system (CNS), have the ability to maintain neural homeostasis, respond to environmental changes, and remodel the synaptic landscape. However, persistent microglial activation can lead to chronic neuroinflammation, which can alter neuronal signaling pathways, resulting in accelerated cognitive decline. Phosphoinositol 3-kinase (PI3K) has emerged as a critical driver, connecting inflammation to neurodegeneration, serving as the nexus of numerous intracellular processes that govern microglial activation. This review focuses on the relationship between PI3K signaling and microglial activation, which might lead to cognitive impairment, inflammation, or even neurodegeneration. The review delves into the components of the PI3K signaling cascade, isoforms, and receptors of PI3K, as well as the downstream effects of PI3K signaling, including its effectors such as protein kinase B (Akt) and mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) and the negative regulator phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN). Experiments have shown that the overproduction of certain cytokines, coupled with abnormal oxidative stress, is a consequence of poor PI3K regulation, resulting in excessive synapse pruning and, consequently, impacting learning and memory functions. The review also highlights the implications of autonomously activated microglia exhibiting M1/M2 polarization driven by PI3K on hippocampal, cortical, and subcortical circuits. Conclusions from behavioral studies, electrophysiology, and neuroimaging linking cognitive performance and PI3K activity were evaluated, along with new approaches to therapy using selective inhibitors or gene editing. The review concludes by highlighting important knowledge gaps, including the specific effects of different isoforms, the risks associated with long-term pathway modulation, and the limitations of translational potential, underscoring the crucial role of PI3K in mitigating cognitive impairment driven by neuroinflammation. Heart rate (HR) is strongly affected by the autonomic nervous system (ANS), while its spontaneous fluctuations, called heart rate variability (HRV), report about the dynamics of the complex, vegetative regulation of the heart rhythm. Hence, HRV is widely considered an important marker of the ANS effects on the cardiac system, and as such, a crucial diagnostic tool in cardiology. In order to obtain nontrivial results from HRV analysis, it would be desirable to establish exact, universal interrelations between the typical HRV parameters and HR itself. That, however, has not yet been fully accomplished. Hence, our aim was to perform a comparative statistical analysis of ECG recordings from a public database, with a focus on the HR dependence of typical HRV parameters. We revealed their fundamental connections, which were substantiated by basic mathematical considerations, and were experimentally demonstrated via the analysis of 24 h of ECG recordings of more than 200 healthy individuals. The large database allowed us to perform unique age-cohort analyses. We confirmed the HR dependence of typical time-domain parameters, such as RMSSD and SDNN, frequency-domain parameters such as the VLF, LF, and HF components, and nonlinear indices such as sample entropy and DFA exponents. In addition to shedding light on their relationship, we are the first, to our knowledge, to identify a new, diffuse structure in the VHF regime as an important indicator of SNS activity. In addition, the demonstrated age dependence of the HRV parameters gives important new insight into the long-term changes in the ANS regulation of the cardiac system. As a possible molecular physiological mechanism underlying our new findings, we suggest that they are associated with Piezo2 channel function and its age-related degradation. We expect our results to be utilized in HRV analysis related to both medical research and practice. Full article

Car interior design should evoke emotions, offer comfort, convey safety and at the same time project the brand identity of the car manufacturer. Lighting is used to address these functions. Modules required for automotive interior lighting often feature injection-moulded (IM) light guides, whereas woven fabrics with polymer optical fibres (POFs) offer certain technological advantages and show first-series applications in cars. In the future, car interior illumination will become even more important in the wake of megatrends such as autonomous driving. Since the increase in deployment of these technologies facilitates a need for an economical comparison, this paper aims to deliver a cost-driven approach to fulfil the aforementioned objective. Therefore, the cost structures of the supply chains for an IM-based and a POF-based illumination module are analysed. The employed research methodologies include an activity-based costing approach for which the data is collected via document analysis and guideline-based expert interviews. To account for data uncertainty, Monte Carlo simulations are conducted. POF-based lighting modules have lower initial costs due to continuous fibre production and weaving processes, but are associated with higher unit costs. This is caused by the discontinuous assembly of the rolled woven fabric which allows postponement strategies. The development costs of the mould generate high initial costs for IM light guides, which makes them beneficial only for high quantities of produced light guides. For the selected scenario, the POF-based module’s self-costs are 11.05 EUR/unit whereas the IM module’s self-costs are 14,19 EUR/unit. While the cost structures are relatively independent from the selected scenario, the actual self-costs are highly dependent on boundary conditions such as production volume. Full article

With the development of electrification and intelligent technologies in vehicles, ride comfort issues represented by motion sickness have become a key constraint on the performance of autonomous driving. The occurrence of motion sickness is influenced by the comprehensive movement of the vehicle in the longitudinal, lateral, and vertical directions, involving ACC, LKA, active suspension, etc. Existing motion sickness control method focuses on optimizing the longitudinal, lateral, and vertical directions separately, or coordinating the optimization control of the longitudinal and lateral directions, while there is relatively little research on the coupling effect and coupled optimization of the longitudinal and vertical directions. This study proposes a coupled framework of ACC and active suspension control system based on MPC. By adding pitch angle changes caused by longitudinal acceleration to the suspension model, a coupled state equation of half-car vertical dynamics and ACC longitudinal dynamics is constructed to achieve integrated optimization of ACC and suspension for motion suppression. The suspension active forces and vehicle acceleration are regulated coordinately to optimize vehicle vertical, longitudinal, and pitch dynamics simultaneously. Simulation experiments show that compared to decoupled control of ACC and suspension, the integrated control framework can be more effective. The research results confirm that the dynamic coordination between the suspension and ACC system can effectively suppress the motion sickness, providing a new idea for solving the comfort conflict in the human vehicle environment coupling system.
