Particle adsorbents have gained significant traction in flue gas desulfurization applications, primarily attributed to their high structural homogeneity and large specific surface area. To address the multifaceted requirements of industrial sectors regarding the structural configurations and physicochemical properties of particle adsorbents while promoting sustainable manufacturing practices, this study systematically evaluates and critically appraises contemporary advancements in particle desulfurizing agent technologies. The synthesis of these findings establishes a theoretical framework to facilitate technological innovation and industrial progress within the particle desulfurizer domain. The research systems of particle adsorbents, encompassing active components, inert carriers, preparation methodologies, and gas–solid reaction models, were comprehensively reviewed. The advantages and current limitations of these systems were then systematically summarized. Finally, the fundamental principles and research trajectories in the application fields of distinct particle adsorbent research systems were elucidated. An analysis of the developmental trends indicated that enhancing the utilization efficiency of active components and improving the cyclic stability of adsorbents remained critical engineering challenges. It is posited that the pursuit of high reaction activity, thermal stability, mechanical strength, and superior anti-aggregation/sintering performance constitutes key directions for the advancement of particle adsorbents in China’s flue gas desulfurization industry. Background and Objectives: Severe early childhood caries (S-ECC) is a chronic infectious disease with a multifactorial etiology which has not been completely elucidated. Research on the role of oxidative stress in the etiopathogenesis of oral diseases suggests that the level of local antioxidants plays an important role in determining susceptibility to caries. This study aimed to demonstrate that the host’s redox imbalance, modified by genetic polymorphisms, may influence the onset and severity of S-ECC. Materials and Methods: A total of 110 patients were included in the study (59 diagnosed with S-ECC and 51 healthy controls). Upon initial appraisal, the DMFT (decayed-missing-filled teeth) index was determined, and epithelial cells were collected using oral swabs for genomic DNA extraction. Genotyping of SOD2 (rs4880) and GPX1 (rs1050450) was performed using TaqMan SNP genotyping assays and real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Results: According to the results of the present study, there was a significant difference between the frequency of the reference genotype and variants for rs4880 (p = 0.0303). Subjects carrying the AG and GG variant genotype of rs4880 were significantly associated with a high DMFT value (p = 0.0005). However, no significant difference was found between the genotypes for rs1050450, nor was there an association with the severity of S-ECC. Conclusions: The AG and GG variant genotypes of the SOD2 polymorphism (rs4880) increase the severity of caries in preschoolers and predispose patients to develop carious lesions, especially when associated with certain feeding practices and infrequent toothbrushing. This observation emphasizes that host sensitivity to caries is a crucial factor in the onset and development of carious lesions in primary dentition, despite the main contributing factors to this pathology. The rs1050450 polymorphism was not associated with the severity of S-ECC. Full article

Over the past few decades, a significant number of large concrete structures with deterioration problems related to the alkali–silica reaction (ASR) have been identified in Portugal and worldwide. Assessing the condition of ASR-affected concrete dams involves both diagnosis and prognosis. Diagnosis evaluates the structure’s current state, while prognosis predicts deterioration and safety implications. This is key to estimate the period during which the structure will effectively perform its function, and essential for the timely and cost-effective planning of the necessary mitigation, rehabilitation, and/or reconstruction works. This article aims to contribute to the ongoing discussion of this topic by the scientific and technical community and, therefore, presents the methodology adopted to assess the condition of a severely ASR-affected concrete dam in Portugal, the Alto Ceira dam, in which the concrete was produced with susceptible to ASR quartzitic aggregates and that was decommissioned and replaced by a new one in 2014. The article provides a brief review of the diagnosis and prognosis of the ASR in concrete dams, presents and analyses the results from laboratory testing (including chemical, microstructural, physical, mechanical, and expansion tests), in-situ testing, structural monitoring systems, visual inspections, and numerical modelling, aiming at assessing ASR impacts and evidencing the utility of the reported methodology on the appraisal of ASR-affected structures. Based on Hirschman’s theory of loyalty and Packer’s normative conflict model, the present study examined the roles of organizational identification in the voice emergence and reaction processes, wherein individuals provide voice and receive evaluations for their voice behavior, respectively. Using a survey method, data were collected from 455 cadets and their supervisors at a military educational institute in South Korea, who live and work together under an honor-based organizational system that encourages voice behavior through formal and informal channels. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was used for hypothesis testing. Our findings from multi-source data demonstrated that, when controlling for two social exchange variables (i.e., leader–member exchange and perceived organizational support), organizational identification not only increases voice behavior but also strengthens the positive relationship between voice behavior and supervisor performance evaluations. Specifically, voice behavior has a positive relationship with performance appraisal only when organizational identification is high. Theoretical and practical implications of the findings and directions for future research are discussed. Full article

This paper presents an in-depth investigation of the biogeochemical modeling approaches applied to underground hydrogen storage. It delves into the intricate dynamics of hydrogen in the subsurface, focusing on small (pore-lab scale) and reservoir-scale models, highlighting the importance of capturing microbial, geochemical, and fluid flow dynamic interactions in porous media to simulate storage performance accurately. Small-scale models offer detailed insights into localized phenomena, such as microbial hydrogen consumption and mineral reactions, and can be verified and calibrated against laboratory data. Conversely, large-scale models are essential to assess the feasibility of a project and forecast the storage performance, but cannot be proven by real data yet. This work addresses the challenge of transitioning from fine-scale to reservoir models, integrating spatial heterogeneity and long-term dynamics while retaining biogeochemical complexity. Through the use of several simulation tools, like PHREEQC, Comsol, DuMuX, Eclipse, CMG-GEM, and others, this study explores how modeling approaches are evolving to incorporate multiphysics processes and biochemical feedback loops, which are essential for predicting hydrogen retention, flow, and potential risks. The findings highlight the strengths and limitations of current modeling techniques and suggest a workflow for exploiting at best existing modeling capabilities and developing reservoir models to support hydrogen storage appraisal and management. Corporate websites are crucial in recruitment, as the prospective applicants’ experiences in digital recruitment may influence their intentions. Therefore, understanding how opportunity-to-perform perceptions (OPP) integral to procedural justice experienced by potential applicants while visiting a corporate recruitment website impact their reactions towards the company can be key. This study aims to elucidate the influence of OPP on applicants’ intentions to apply (ITA) via corporate websites. Specifically, it explores the indirect relationship between OPP during recruitment and ITA one month after visiting a company website, mediated by organizational attractiveness and ITA measured immediately after and one week after the website visit. This multi-wave study collected 260 cases from master’s students in psychology who completed a questionnaire across waves. Hypotheses were tested using the PROCESS macro in SPSS. The findings highlighted a serial mediation pathway, wherein the indirect connection between OPP and ITA after one month was mediated through organizational attractiveness, ITA immediately after, and one week after website visits. The results highlight the importance of enhancing procedural justice corporate websites to influence applicants’ perceptions and intentions positively and improve recruitment outcomes. Future research should explore the effect of long-term justice perceptions as a basis for a sustainable employee–employer relationship. Full article

Opioids are the strongest analgesics available and are crucial in the treatment of acute and chronic pain. The line between these critical medications and how they are used beyond standard therapeutics in cases such as abuse, misuse, and medication errors needs to be understood, as it affects their safety, efficacy, and manner of use. The aim of this systematic review was to identify what is known about the adverse events resulting from the abuse, misuse, and medication errors associated with opioid use. A systematic search was conducted in the PubMed®, Scopus® and, EBSCO® databases to retrieve studies from the inception to December 2023 reporting abuse, misuse, and medication errors associated with medicinal opioid use. Two authors independently screened titles and abstracts and full text according to eligibility using Covidence® software. Full articles were examined by two independent reviewers, and disagreements were resolved by a third reviewer. The risk of bias was assessed by the JBI’s critical appraisal tools. A total of 934 articles were screened by their title and abstract. Then, 151 articles were selected for full text screening. Of these, 34 studies were eligible for inclusion in this review. The included studies varied significantly in their population sizes, ranging from 9 individuals to 298,433 patients, and encompassed a diverse demographic, including all ages and both sexes. The studies consistently reported a range of adverse events associated with opioid use. Fentanyl, morphine, oxycodone, tramadol, and hydrocodone were frequently implicated. The data heterogeneity in this field resulted in challenges in drawing conclusions. The review highlights that some opioids, particularly fentanyl, morphine, and oxycodone, are frequently associated with preventable adverse drug reactions, abuse, and medication errors, underscoring the need for robust preventative measures and ongoing research to mitigate opioid-related harm. Violent social and political conflicts have caused several challenges to internally displaced persons (IDPs), especially girls and young women, among which is sexual violence (SV). Despite extensive records on SV in humanitarian contexts, studies to assess the level, examine the disclosure pattern (DP) and evaluate the availability of abortion care in these settings have received inadequate attention. This scoping review sought to synthesise the current African-based research on SV, DP, and abortion and post-abortion care (APAC) in humanitarian contexts. We conducted a systematic search of five databases: MEDLINE, PubMed, Scopus, Embase and Google Scholar, where the articles retrieved met the criteria for inclusion. The review adhered to PRISMA guidelines and the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP), containing ten questions to help confirm the validity of the research design and the originality of the results in comparison with similar studies. A series of inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied after the search, and 35 eligible articles from ten African countries with evidence of sexual violence, disclosure patterns, and APAC in camp settings were included in the study. Results described situations of SV in humanitarian settings in Africa as “terrible”, “bad”, “an epidemic”, and “severe” as girls were used as sex objects, for profile enhancement and as a weapon of war. We also found that the illegality of APAC in Africa is causing a high occurrence of clandestine abortions in conflict contexts. Disclosing SV among IDPs in Africa did not follow a clear-cut pattern but was generally determined by socio-demographic characteristics. Sexual health is a fundamental right of all, as enshrined in SDG 3, which makes this topic a major public health issue. We therefore conclude that although disclosure may aggravate stigmatisation in some instances due to adverse reactions, it is still crucial to the healing processes. Full article

Recently, the number of people acquiring tattoos has increased, with tattoos gaining significant popularity in people between 20 and 40 years old. Inflammation is a common reaction associated with tattooing. The purpose of this study was to evaluate a nanostructured lipid carrier loading pranoprofen (PRA-NLC) as a tattoo aftercare formulation to reduce the inflammation associated with tattooing. In this context, the in vitro drug release and the ex vivo permeation-through-human-skin tests using Franz cells were appraised. The tolerance of our formulation on the skin was evaluated by studying the skin’s biomechanical properties. In addition, an in vivo anti-inflammatory study was conducted on mice skin to evaluate the efficacy of the formulation applied topically after tattooing the animals. PRA-NLC showed a sustained release up to 72 h, and the amount of pranoprofen retained in the skin was found to be 33.48 µg/g/cm2. The formulation proved to be well tolerated; it increased stratum corneum hydration, and no signs of skin irritation were observed. Furthermore, it was demonstrated to be non-cytotoxic since the cell viability was greater than 80%. Based on these results, we concluded that PRA-NLC represents a suitable drug delivery carrier for the transdermal delivery of pranoprofen to alleviate the local skin inflammation associated with tattooing. Niacinamide (or nicotinamide) is a small-molecule hydrosoluble vitamin with essential metabolic functions in mammalian cells. Niacinamide has become a key functional ingredient in diverse skincare products and cosmetics. This vitamin plays a pivotal role in NAD+ synthesis, notably contributing to redox reactions and energy production in cutaneous cells. Via diversified biochemical mechanisms, niacinamide is also known to influence human DNA repair and cellular stress responses. Based on decades of safe use in cosmetics, niacinamide recently gained widespread popularity as an active ingredient which aligns with the “Kligman standards” in skincare. From a therapeutic standpoint, the intrinsic properties of niacinamide may be applied to managing acne vulgaris, melasma, and psoriasis. From a cosmeceutical standpoint, niacinamide has been widely leveraged as a multipurpose antiaging ingredient. Therein, it was shown to significantly reduce cutaneous oxidative stress, inflammation, and pigmentation. Overall, through multimodal mechanisms, niacinamide may be considered to partially prevent and/or reverse several biophysical changes associated with skin aging. The present narrative review provides multifactorial insights into the mechanisms of niacinamide’s therapeutic and cosmeceutical functions. The ingredient’s evolving role in skincare was critically appraised, with a strong focus on the biochemical mechanisms at play. Finally, novel indications and potential applications of niacinamide in dermal fillers and alternative injectable formulations were prospectively explored. Full article

Neuroimaging studies using autobiographical recall methods investigated the neural correlates of happy autobiographical memories (AMs). The scope of the present activation likelihood estimation (ALE) meta-analysis was to quantitatively analyze neuroimaging studies of happy AMs conducted with autobiographical recall paradigms. A total of 17 studies (12 fMRI; 5 PET) on healthy individuals were included in this meta-analysis. During recall of happy life events, consistent activation foci were found in the frontal gyrus, the cingulate cortex, the basal ganglia, the parahippocampus/hippocampus, the hypothalamus, and the thalamus. The result of this quantitative coordinate-based ALE meta-analysis provides an objective view of brain responses associated with AM recollection of happy events, thus identifying brain areas consistently activated across studies. This extended brain network included frontal and limbic regions involved in remembering emotionally relevant positive events. The frontal gyrus and the cingulate cortex may be responsible for cognitive appraisal processes during recollection of happy AMs, while the subthalamic nucleus and globus pallidus may be involved in pleasure reactions associated with recollection of happy life events. These findings shed light on the neural network involved in recalling positive AMs in healthy individuals, opening further avenues for future research in clinical populations with mood disorders. The use of various advanced oxidation methods in the treatment of wastewater has become the subject of many studies published in recent years. In particular, it is exceedingly significant to compare these treatment methods for industrial wastewater to reduce environmental effects and optimize plant operations and economics. The present study is the first to deal with the treatability of real epoxy paint wastewater (EPW) using MW- and UV-assisted Fenton processes within an optimization framework. A three-factor, three-level Box–Behnken experimental design combined with response surface methodology (RSM) was conducted for maximizing the chemical oxygen demand (COD) and color removal efficiencies of ultraviolet (UV)/Fenton and microwave (MW)/Fenton processes in the treatment of the real epoxy paint wastewater (EPW, initial COD = 4600 ± 90 mg/L, initial color = 114 ± 4 Pt-Co), based on 15 different experimental runs. Three independent variables (reaction time ranging from 20 to 60 min (UV) and from 5 to 15 min (MW), power ranging from 20 to 40 W (UV) and from 300 to 600 W (MW), and H2O2/Fe2+ ratio ranging from 0.2 to 0.6 (for both UV and MW)) were consecutively coded as A, B, and C at three levels (−1, 0, and 1), and four second-order polynomial regression equations were then derived to estimate the responses (COD and color removals) of two distinct systems. The significance of the independent model components and their interrelations were appraised by means of a variance analysis with 99% confidence limits (α = 0.01). The standardized differences of the independent variables and the consistency between the actual and predicted values were also investigated by preparing normal probability residual plots and experiment-model plots for all processes. The optimal operating conditions were attained by solving the quadratic regression models and analyzing the surface and contour plots. UV/Fenton and MW/Fenton processes, which constitute combined Fenton processes, were performed using advanced oxidation methods, while Fenton processes were utilized as the standard method for wastewater treatment. When UV/Fenton and MW/Fenton processes were applied separately, the COD removal efficiencies were determined to be 96.4% and 95.3%, respectively. For the color parameter, the removal efficiencies after the application of both processes were found to exceed 97.5%. While these efficiencies were achieved in 1 h with a 38 W UV unit, they were achieved in 15 min with a MW power of 570 W. According to the RSM-based regression analysis results, the R2 values for both processes were greater than 0.97 and p values were less than 0.003. Full article

Using a discourse approach, this study examines online news and opinion pieces about calls for the British Museum to return Chinese artefacts. We examine the interpersonal meanings conveyed by the linguistic choices made in these texts. This study uses the appraisal system in the systemic functional linguistic (SFL) framework to examine how news discourse addresses the issue and constructs interpersonal meanings. Graduation resources, as a subcategory of appraisal system, can underpin the degree of meanings and perspectives, allowing writers to adjust the gradability of attitudinal meanings conveyed to readers. This research first examines how the writer’s voice is embedded in graduation resources, and later, how these graduation resources are used in online news articles calling for the return of the artefacts. This study also examines how online newspapers covered a short film by vloggers called “Escape from the British Museum”, which sparked massive social media reactions, offering new perspectives on how social media and traditional news organisations interact to construct meanings through language. The results show that quantification and fulfilment (completion) resources are the two most common subcategories of graduation resources. The findings shed light on the language strategies used in news and social media discourse, as well as the interpersonal meanings behind such requests for cultural heritage repatriation. Full article

A successful transition to a lower-emission society may require major changes in the patterns of individual behaviours. Yet, whilst awareness and concern about climate change have increased in recent years among the global population, global greenhouse gases emissions have not ceased to rise. This paper discusses potential reasons underlying the gap between individual knowledge of climate change and the actions implemented to contain greenhouse gas emissions. To investigate this phenomenon, we look at the scientific literature exploring the factors influencing pro-environmental behaviour. First, we highlight how an individual’s environmental knowledge is not only approximate but also biased by cognitive, affective, and cultural factors, influencing their appraisal of climate information and their motivation to act. Second, we discuss three major models of pro-environmental behaviour, such as the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB), the Norm-Activation Model (NAM), and the Value-Belief-Norm (VBN), to highlight their failure to account for automatic cognitive and affective factors influencing an individual’s ability to implement pro-environmental intentions. Then, we discuss the Comprehensive-Action-Determination Model of pro-environmental behaviour (CADM), and its efforts to overcome the limits of the previous models. Finally, we examine the dispositional traits associated with pro-environmental engagement to highlight how the relationship between dispositions and pro-environmental behaviour performance appears related to self-regulation processes, supported by executive functioning; increased self-regulation would enable alignment of pro-environmental intentions and behaviours, and anticipation of the long-term consequences of present behaviours. We conclude by calling for more research to be carried out on the effect of enhanced self-regulation, and of self-regulation training, on individual reactions to the climate crisis. Full article

Background: Stem cells have been associated with self-renewing and plasticity and have been investigated in various odontogenic lesions in association with their pathogenesis and biological behavior. We aim to provide a systematic review of stem cell markers’ expression in odontogenic tumors and cysts. Methods: The literature was searched through the MEDLINE/PubMed, EMBASE via OVID, Web of Science, and CINHAL via EBSCO databases for original studies evaluating stem cell markers’ expression in different odontogenic tumors/cysts, or an odontogenic disease group and a control group. The studies’ risk of bias (RoB) was assessed via a Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Tool. Meta-analysis was conducted for markers evaluated in the same pair of odontogenic tumors/cysts in at least two studies. Results: 29 studies reported the expression of stem cell markers, e.g., SOX2, OCT4, NANOG, CD44, ALDH1, BMI1, and CD105, in various odontogenic lesions, through immunohistochemistry/immunofluorescence, polymerase chain reaction, flow cytometry, microarrays, and RNA-sequencing. Low, moderate, and high RoBs were observed in seven, nine, and thirteen studies, respectively. Meta-analysis revealed a remarkable discriminative ability of SOX2 for ameloblastic carcinomas or odontogenic keratocysts over ameloblastomas. Conclusion: Stem cells might be linked to the pathogenesis and clinical behavior of odontogenic pathologies and represent a potential target for future individualized therapies. Full article
