Shallot (Allium hirtifolium Boiss.) is of considerable nutritional and medical significance due to its strong antioxidant properties; however, no nanophytotoxicity studies have assessed whether the use of nanofertilizers would improve shallot performance, micronutrient iron (Fe) enrichment, and yield in semi-arid regions. Herein, we evaluated the effects of magnetite nanoparticles (nFe3O4) on shallot grown for a full lifecycle in two semi-arid regions through bulb-priming followed by foliar application and compared them with conventional ferrous sulfate (FeSO4) fertilizer and untreated control. Our results showed remarkable cellular adaptations to semi-arid climate upon nFe3O4 treatment as leaves displayed thickened cell walls, distinct chloroplasts featuring organized thylakoid grana and stroma, normal mitochondria, abundant starch grains, and plastoglobuli around chloroplasts compared to FeSO4 or untreated control. At 900 mg/L nFe3O4, chlorophyll-a, chlorophyll-b, and carotenoid increased by 27–55%, 108–126%, and 77–97%, respectively, compared to FeSO4 applied at recommended field rate (1800 mg/L). Significant increments in bulb diameter (38–39%) and sister bulb number (300–500%) were observed upon 900 mg/L nFe3O4 treatment compared to FeSO4 (1800 mg/L) and control. Furthermore, with 900 mg/L nFe3O4 treatment, total phenol, flavonoids, and Fe in bulbs increased by 27–46%, 29–73%, and 486–549%, respectively, compared to FeSO4 (1800 mg/L). These findings demonstrate that bulb-priming followed by foliar application of 900 mg/L of nFe3O4 could significantly promote cellular adaptation, thereby improving photosynthetic efficiency, bulb yield, antioxidant activities, and Fe biofortification in shallot, and may serve as a novel approach for improving shallot production in semi-arid regions. Cutaneous leishmaniasis is a zoonotic disease caused by Leishmania parasites and leads to chronic, non-healing skin lesions. Although current drugs can control the disease, their use is limited by systemic side effects, low efficacy, and inadequate lesion penetration. Therefore, innovative local delivery systems are required to enhance drug penetration and reduce systemic toxicity. To address these challenges, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were synthesized using propolis extract through a green synthesis approach, and a tri-layer wound dressing composed of polyvinyl alcohol and gelatin containing synthesized AgNPs and Glucantime was fabricated by electrospinning. Characterization (SEM-EDX, FTIR, TGA) confirmed uniform morphology, chemical structure, and thermal stability; the wound dressing exhibited hydrophilicity, antioxidant activity, and biphasic release. Biological evaluations against Leishmania tropica demonstrated significant antiparasitic activity. Promastigote viability decreased from 76.3% in neat fibers to 31.6% in nanofibers containing AgNPs and 7.9% in tri-layer nanofibers containing both AgNPs and Glucantime. Similarly, the amastigote infection index dropped from 410 in controls to 250 in neat nanofibers, 204 in AgNPs-containing nanofibers, and 22 in tri-layer nanofibers containing AgNPs and Glucantime. The tri-layer nanofibers demonstrated enhanced antileishmanial activity over AgNPs-containing fibers, confirming synergistic efficacy. All nanofibers were biocompatible, supporting their use as a safe platform for cutaneous leishmaniasis treatment. Full article

Despite its biological relevance, allomelanin remains significantly less explored than other synthetic melanin analogs, particularly compared to polydopamine, a synthetic analog of eumelanin. In this review, we provide a comprehensive overview of current knowledge on allomelanin, summarizing the main methods used to characterize its molecular structure, morphology, and chemical functionalities. We also present its emerging applications, ranging from human health to materials science, highlighting how its optical characteristics, ability to modulate redox processes, and antioxidant properties support its growing technological interest. Finally, we describe the natural presence and biological role of allomelanin, highlighting how knowledge of its biosynthetic processes and functions in nature can guide more effective strategies for the design and optimization of new allomelanin materials. Green technologies are actively being used to produce nanosized zinc oxide, which is in demand for water purification processes to remove pollutants. Despite the success of the green synthesis of ZnO nanoparticles, no scientific approach exists for selecting plant extracts to produce nanoparticles with the desired properties. This study shows that the antioxidant activity of the plant extracts used is a key parameter influencing the properties of the resulting ZnO nanoparticles. This conclusion is based on the results of nanoparticle synthesis with the use of various plant extracts. The antioxidant activity of the extracts increases in the following order: plum–gooseberry–black currant–strawberry–sea buckthorn. The synthesized ZnO nanoparticles were characterized by UV–visible spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The catalytic properties of ZnO nanoparticles were tested under the degradation of a synthetic methylene blue dye after exposure to UV light. We found that with an increase in the AOA of plant extracts, the size of the nanoparticles decreases, while their photocatalytic activity increases. The smallest (d = 13 nm), most uniform in size (polydispersity index 0.1), and most catalytically active ZnO nanoparticles with a small band gap (2.85 eV) were obtained using the sea buckthorn extract with the highest AOA, pH 10 of the reaction mixture and 0.1 M Zn(CH3COO)2∙2H2O as a precursor salt. ZnO nanoparticles synthesized in the sea buckthorn extract demonstrated the highest dye photodegradation efficiency (96.4%) compared with other nanoparticles. The established patterns demonstrate the “antioxidant activity–size–catalytic activity” triad can be considered as a practical guide for obtaining ZnO nanoparticles of a given size and with given properties for environmental remediation applications. In this study, selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) were synthesized using polysaccharides extracted from blueberry pomace (BP) as a stabilizing agent. BP was characterized as an acidic polysaccharide with a molecular weight of 5.4 × 105 Da. The resulting BP-SeNPs were monodisperse spheres with an average size of 94.33 nm, as confirmed by TEM, DLS, FT-IR, XRD, and EDX analyses. Compared to SeNPs, BP-SeNPs demonstrated superior stability under varying conditions of storage time, temperature, pH, and ionic strength. Furthermore, in vitro evaluation using AAPH-induced rabbit erythrocytes revealed that BP-SeNPs offered enhanced protection against hemolysis. This protective effect was attributed to their ability to significantly bolster antioxidant enzyme activities (SOD, CAT, and GSH-Px) and preserve membrane integrity by maintaining ATPase function and sialic acid content. These results establish BP as an effective stabilizer for SeNPs and suggest the promising potential of BP-SeNPs as antioxidant agents in functional food or nutraceutical applications. Full article

As a natural flavonoid compound, quercetin possesses excellent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-atherosclerotic activities. However, the poor water solubility and sensitivity to the environment severely limit the application of quercetin. Initially, quercetin-loaded zein/carboxymethyl chitosan nanoparticles (ZCQ NPs) were prepared using an anti-solvent precipitation method. The fabricated ZCQ NPs exhibited a small particle size and polydispersity index (PDI). The ZCQ NPs had a negative zeta potential with an absolute value of 41.50 ± 1.76 mV. ZCQ NPs could remain highly stable against light, heat and ion strength. In addition, ZCQ NPs maintained good monodispersity and displayed minimal changes in particle size under long-term storage conditions. Additionally, a superior antioxidant capacity of ZCQ NPs was also observed in the free radical and reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging study compared to that of free quercetin. All these results of this study suggest that ZCQ NPs could serve as an effective drug delivery system for encapsulating and delivering quercetin. Full article

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a leading cause of chronic pain worldwide. This is driven by progressive cartilage degradation, inflammation, oxidative stress, and metabolic dysfunction. Current pharmacologic interventions mostly lead to symptomatic relief without actually affecting disease progression. Thus, there is a growing interest in the development of new interventional methods. Our review seeks to synthesize preclinical, translational, and clinical evidence on the impact nutritional methods have on OA management. Whole-diet approaches, such as Mediterranean and plant-based, have been linked to reduced pain, increased physical function, and positive biomarker changes. Bioactive compounds, including curcumin, polyphenols, omega-3 fatty acids, and select herbal extracts, have shown anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and chondroprotective effects via NF-κB, Nrf2, AMPK, and SIRT1 pathways. This review particularly focuses on plant-derived substances. Emerging nanoparticle technology with regard to advanced delivery systems shows initial promise in nutraceutical pharmacokinetics and tissue targeting. Overall, nutritional interventions are adjunct interventions to OA management. Although these are not full treatment replacements, dietary modifications and targeted nutraceutical strategies with improved delivery systems may lead to more preventive, personalized, and holistic OA management and care. Starch and its derivatives have undergone substantial advancement in the food and beverage industry, driven by growing demand for improved functionality and health-promoting attributes. Native starches are widely used as thickeners and stabilizers; however, their applications are limited by deficiencies such as poor freeze–thaw stability. To overcome these constraints, a range of physical, chemical, and enzymatic modification techniques has been developed, yielding starches with tailored and enhanced properties. Recent innovations include polyphenol-modified starches, which improve physicochemical characteristics and confer additional health benefits, such as reduced digestibility and increased antioxidant activity—features that are particularly valuable for functional foods targeting hyperglycemia. Enzymatic modifications further enhance starch quality and processing efficiency, while chemically modified forms, such as oxidized and acetylated starches, improve emulsification and water-binding capacities in various processed foods. Starch nanoparticles have also gained attention as encapsulating agents and carriers for bioactive compounds, broadening their technological applications. In parallel, the exploration of unconventional starch sources derived from fruit-processing by-products supports sustainability efforts while introducing novel functional attributes. Collectively, these developments are contributing to the creation of healthier, more stable food products that align with consumer expectations and regulatory standards. The following sections of this article examine emerging applications of starch and its derivatives, with particular emphasis on their health benefits and sustainable production pathways. Full article

The main goal of this work was to develop nanoparticles of lysozyme (Lys) for biological and biomedical applications. The developed biosystems were based on Lys-loaded calcium alginate 2% and chitosan 1% beads and films with different concentrations of each polymer. Encapsulation efficiency was 100%. The ratio of adsorbed Lys on the films, Lys activity, and the release profile of Lys were measured using water and buffer solution at pH similar to the environment of cancer cells, at a controlled temperature of 37 °C and a constant speed, to assess the efficacy of the encapsulation process. Lys antimicrobial activity was assessed using Micrococcus lysodeikticus. Moreover, the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of the developed biosystems were also evaluated. The anti-inflammatory activity of Lys released from calcium alginate 2%-chitosan 1% beads loaded with Lys was about 99%. These findings highlight the potential of the developed beads and films for biomedical applications, particularly in antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory therapies. Full article

Selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs), a highly promising candidate as a nutrient fortificant and food additive, face challenges in stability and biosafety. These limitations hinder their application in the food industry. In this study, Ganoderma lucidum melanin (GLM) was utilized as a natural stabilizer. Three distinct types of GLM-stabilized SeNPs, termed GLM-SeNPs (S-GLM, D-GLM, and A-GLM), were subsequently synthesized via an ascorbic acid reduction method. The results showed that the prepared nanoparticles exhibited uniform particle size (55–75 nm) and good dispersibility. Among them, S-GLM possessed the highest selenium content (2598.90 mg/kg) and demonstrated the best stability. GLM-SeNPs significantly downregulated (p < 0.05) the mRNA expression of key pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-1β) and upregulated (p < 0.05) the mRNA expression of the anti-inflammatory factor IL-10 in LPS-induced RAW264.7 macrophages. A potential mechanism underlying this effect may be the suppression of the NF-κB signaling pathway. In addition, GLM-SeNPs exhibited potent inhibitory effects against common foodborne pathogens. This study explores a potential novel strategy for the high-value utilization of natural functional components in food systems. These preliminary findings suggest GLM-SeNPs may have application potential in areas like functional beverages and food preservation. Further research is warranted to validate their feasibility in real food systems. Full article

The purpose of the study was to characterize the basic structure of nanoparticles (Zein-CS-Cur-Que) embedded in curcumin and quercetin, realize the synergistic antioxidant of dietary polyphenols, and improve the transmembrane transport rate and bioavailability of curcumin. The oral delivery system Zein-CS-Cur-Que developed based on the synergistic encapsulation of curcumin and quercetin using the anti-solvent method with corn alkyd-soluble proteins and sodium caseinate possessed varying nanoparticle sizes (173.96–191.03 nm) and good dispersibility (PDI < 0.17), and relied on electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonding, and hydrophobic interactions to successfully encapsulate curcumin (94.62%) and quercetin (73.75%). The results showed that Zein-CS-Cur-Que enhanced the stability and antioxidant activity of curcumin, and increased the bioaccessibility (nearly 2-fold) and rate of translocation (nearly 2-fold) of curcumin in the gastrointestinal tract significantly. Therefore, the nanocomposite system developed in this study is crucial for the development of functional foods and dietary supplements, providing effective insights into the synergy of polyphenol interactions. To reduce the environmental impact of plastic packaging in the edible fungi supply chain, this study developed an edible natural chitosan composite film loaded with chlorogenic acid–chitosan oligosaccharide nanoparticles (CGA/COS NPs). The effects of CGA/COS NPs as additives on the structure and overall performances of chitosan-based films were systematically studied, and the application effect of nanoparticles/chitosan (NPs/CS) composite films in the preservation of Pleurotus geesteranus was explored. The results showed that the NPs had good compatibility with the film matrix, filled the voids of the chitosan matrix, enhanced the comprehensive performance of the film, and significantly improved the antioxidant activity of the film (DPPH free radical scavenging activity increased from 16.95% to 76.47%). Among all the films, the 5%NPs/CS composite film performed the best, not only having stronger barrier properties against moisture, oxygen, and ultraviolet rays, but also having the best thermal stability and mechanical properties, which can effectively extend the shelf life of Pleurotus geesteranus. This study developed a high-performance edible composite film, which provides a new path of great value for solving the preservation problem of perishable agricultural products such as Pleurotus geesteranus and promoting the innovative development of the green food packaging industry. Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) have attracted growing interest in several fields, including topical biomedical applications, due to their stability, biocompatibility and therapeutic potential. In this study, chitosan (Ch), gelatin (G) and arabic gum (AG) were combined to formulate hydrogels loaded with different ZnO NP concentrations. The main aim is to assess the synergy between the properties of biopolymers and ZnO moieties in terms of antiviral activity. ZnO NPs were synthesized via co-precipitation. Hydrogels were prepared using the freeze–thaw method, and the loading of 2.5, 5 and 7.5% w/w of ZnO NPs with respect to Ch was promoted by ultrasonication. The structural, morphological, surface and thermal properties of hydrogels loaded with ZnO NPs (HZ 2.5, HZ 5 and HZ 7.5) and the control matrix (H) were characterized using FTIR spectroscopy, confirming the successful incorporation and interaction of ZnO NPs with the polymeric network. Low ZnO NP concentrations enhanced the swelling degree of the hydrogels (from 1044% to 1253%), improving their thermal stability and solubility (96 h vs. 48 h HZ 7.5 and 14 h in the case of H). This behavior could be ascribed to the aggregation of ZnO NPs with increasing amounts, which was verified through FESEM. Virucidal activity was tested against herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and bovine coronavirus (BCoV), demonstrating a substantial enhancement when the ZnO NPs are added independently of the concentration. An almost 100% viral inhibition was recorded when the HZs were analyzed, whereas the H matrix showed an inhibition of about 40% against the same virus. Antioxidant activity was evaluated via the DPPH free radical inhibition method, revealing an improvement with the loading of NPs. Full article

Valorizing fruit and vegetable residues as renewable sources of bioactive compounds (BCs) is critical for advancing sustainable biotechnology. This review (i) assesses the occurrence, diversity and functionality of BCs in 20 edible plant residues; (ii) compares and classify them by botanical family and residue type; (iii) reviews and evaluates the efficiency of conventional and green extraction and characterization techniques for recovering phytochemical and isolating phenolics (e.g., flavonoids and anthocyanins), carotenoids, alkaloids, saponins, and essential oils; and (iv) examines the BCs’ environmental, medical, and industrial applications. It synthesizes current knowledge on the phytochemical potential of these crops, highlighting their role in diagnostics, biomaterials, and therapeutic platforms. Plant-derived nanomaterials, enzymes, and structural matrices are employed in regenerative medicine and biosensing. Carrot- and pumpkin-based nanoparticles accelerate wound healing through antimicrobial and antioxidant protection. Spinach leaves serve as decellularized scaffolds that mimic vascular and tissue microenvironments. Banana fibers are used in biocompatible composites and sutures, and citrus- and berry-derived polyphenols improve biosensor stability and reduce signal interference. Agro-residue valorization reduces food waste and enables innovations in medical diagnostics, regenerative medicine, and circular bioeconomy, thereby positioning plant-derived BCs as a cornerstone for sustainable biotechnology. The BCs’ concentration in fruit and vegetable residues varies broadly (e.g., total phenolics (~50–300 mg GAE/g DW), anthocyanins (~100–600 mg C3G/g DW), and flavonoids (~20–150 mg QE/g DW)), depending on the crop and extraction method. By linking quantitative food waste hotspots with phytochemical potential, the review highlights priority streams for the circular-bioeconomy interventions and outlines research directions to close current valorization gaps. Mitigation of abiotic stress of crops is currently one of the primary issues for modern agriculture to secure food supply. On that point, it is acknowledged that climate change is leading to an increase in temperature and solar radiation, while also contributing to prolonged drought events. In contrast, saline soil and heavy metal pollution have been globally problematic, affecting a large part of crops. In this review, we have provided an overview of the eco-physiological and molecular aspects of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) as a novel technology for alleviating abiotic stress in plants. It is reported that the presence of ZnO-NPs has positive benefits in physiological processes, such as photosynthetic efficiency, osmotic regulation, ionic homeostasis, and the activation of antioxidant defense systems through gene modifications and the regulation of genes that are regulated under stress conditions. These are positive results for yields, nutrition, and resistance levels in cereals, legumes, and horticultural crops. Furthermore, essential details are reported, suggesting that the addition of ZnO-NPs to crops may be involved in regulating plant metabolism. Nonetheless, we recognize that this technology poses significant challenges for validation on a large scale, particularly in uncontrolled environments. Full article
