This article focuses on activities addressed in the European project hydrogen lightweight & innovative tank for zero-emission aircraft, H2ELIOS. The authors propose a preliminary approach oriented to the design of a structural health monitoring SHM system conceived for a cryo-tank liquid hydrogen storage for medium range vehicles. The system was ideated to be installed on board and operating during service, to provide early detection and localization of potential damage, critical both in terms of safety and maintenance. The use of optical fibers for strain measurement is justified, on one hand, by the capability of pure silica fiber to prevent hydrogen darkening effects and, on the other hand, by the absence of metal components, which eliminates the risk of embrittlement. In detail, distributed and fiber Bragg grating FBG sensors designed for this specific application have demonstrated reliable monitoring capabilities, even after exposure to hydrogen and at cryogenic temperatures. Furthermore, another key contribution of this preliminary activity is the analysis of thermoplastic material faults by correlating damage characteristics with static and dynamic response. This is due to the fact that the investigated physics strongly depend on the nature of occurring damage. Achievements lie in the demonstrated ability to assess the health status of the reference composite structure, establishing the first steps for a future qualification of the proprietary system, made of commercial and original hardware and software. The classical V-Model has served as the foundational framework for aerospace systems engineering, but its scope terminates upon aircraft certification, creating a significant gap in addressing reliability degradation during operational service. This study introduces the W-model framework—a comprehensive lifecycle management approach that extends the V-Model to systematically integrate reliability-centered component modifications with established aerospace development practices. The W-model incorporates a structured six-phase reliability-centered modification methodology that transforms operational data into certified design improvements through systematic reliability monitoring, candidate selection, design reviews, development, and certification processes. A detailed case study on the aviation pneumatic bypass valve demonstrates the methodology. Application of the W-model resulted in a 36% improvement in the mean time between failures and a significant reduction in unscheduled removals. The W-model represents a paradigm shift from reactive maintenance strategies to proactive, data-driven reliability enhancement, providing a systematic approach that maintains the rigor and traceability required for commercial aviation while enabling continuous reliability growth throughout the complete aircraft lifecycle. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have rapidly grown into different essential applications, including surveillance, disaster response, agriculture, and urban monitoring. However, for UAVS to steer safely and autonomously, the ability to detect obstacles and nearby aircraft remains crucial, especially under hard environmental conditions. This study comprehensively analyzes the recent landscape of obstacle and aircraft detection techniques tailored for UAVs acting in difficult scenarios such as fog, rain, smoke, low light, motion blur, and disorderly environments. It starts with a detailed discussion of key detection challenges and continues with an evaluation of different sensor types, from RGB and infrared cameras to LiDAR, radar, sonar, and event-based vision sensors. Both classical computer vision methods and deep learning-based detection techniques are examined in particular, highlighting their performance strengths and limitations under degraded sensing conditions. The paper additionally offers an overview of suitable UAV-specific datasets and the evaluation metrics generally used to evaluate detection systems. Finally, the paper examines open problems and coming research directions, emphasising the demand for lightweight, adaptive, and weather-resilient detection systems appropriate for real-time onboard processing. This study aims to guide students and engineers towards developing stronger and intelligent detection systems for next-generation UAV operations. Full article

To enhance the reliability of electric propulsion in electric aircraft and address power interruptions caused by current sensor failures, this study proposes a current sensorless fault-tolerant control strategy for permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) based on a long short-term memory (LSTM) network. First, a hierarchical architecture is constructed to fuse multi-phase electrical signals in the fault diagnosis layer (sliding mode observer). A symbolic function for the reaching law observer is designed based on Lyapunov theory, in order to generate current predictions for fault diagnosis. Second, when a fault occurs, the system switches to the LSTM reconstruction layer. Finally, gating units are used to model nonlinear dynamics to achieve direct mapping of speed/position to phase current. Verification using a physical prototype shows that the proposed method can complete mode switching within 10 ms after a sensor failure, which is 80% faster than EKF, and its speed error is less than 2.5%, fully meeting the high speed error requirements of electric aircraft propulsion systems (i.e., ≤3%). The current reconstruction RMSE is reduced by more than 50% compared with that of the EKF, which ensures continuous and reliable control while maintaining the stable operation of the motor and realizing rapid switching. The intelligent algorithm and sliding mode control fusion strategy meet the requirements of high real-time performance and provide a highly reliable fault-tolerant scheme for electric aircraft propulsion. This paper develops empirical relationships to estimate FAA/EASA and MIL-3013B rules-compliant take-off field performance for single and multi-engine aircraft. Recent experience with modern aircraft flight manuals revealed that popular empirical legacy methods are no longer accurate; improvements in tires and brakes lead to significantly shorter certified distances. This work relies upon a survey of current operational aircraft and extensive numerical simulations of generic configurations to support the development of a collection of new equations to estimate take-off performance for single and multi-engine aircraft under dry and wet conditions. These relationships are individually tailored for civilian and U.S. Military rules; they account for the superior capability of modern braking systems and the implications of minimum-control speed on the certified distance. Prognostic and Health Management (PHM) strategies are gaining increasingly more traction in almost every field of engineering, offering stakeholders advanced capabilities in system monitoring, anomaly detection, and predictive maintenance. Primary flight control actuators are safety-critical elements within aircraft flight control systems (FCSs), and currently, they are mainly based on Electro-Hydraulic Actuators (EHAs) or Electro-Hydrostatic Actuators (EHSAs). Despite the widespread diffusion of PHM methodologies, the application of these technologies for EHAs is still somewhat limited, and the available information is often restricted to the industrial sector. To fill this gap, this paper provides an in-depth analysis of state-of-the-art EHA PHM strategies for aerospace applications, as well as their limitations and further developments through a Systematic Literature Review (SLR). An objective and clear methodology, combined with the use of attractive and informative graphics, guides the reader towards a thorough investigation of the state of the art, as well as the challenges in the field that limit a wider implementation. It is deemed that the information presented in this review will be useful for new researchers and industry engineers as it provides indications for conducting research in this specific and still not very investigated sector. The aircraft nose-wheel steering system serves as a critical component for ensuring ground taxiing safety and maneuvering efficiency. However, its dynamic control stability faces significant challenges under complex operational conditions. Existing research predominantly focuses on single-discipline modeling, with insufficient in-depth analysis of the coupling effects between hydraulic system dynamics and mechanical dynamics. Traditional PID controllers exhibit limitations in scenarios involving nonlinear time-varying conditions caused by normal load fluctuations of the landing gear buffer strut during high-speed landing phases, including increased control overshoot and inadequate adaptability to abrupt load variations. These issues severely compromise the stability of high-speed deviation correction and overall aircraft safety. To address these challenges, this study constructs a digital twin model based on real aircraft data and innovatively implements multidisciplinary co-simulation via Simcenter 3D, AMESim 2021.1, and MATLAB R2020a. A fuzzy adaptive PID controller is specifically designed to achieve adaptive adjustment of control parameters. Comparative analysis through co-simulation demonstrates that the proposed mechanical–electrical–hydraulic collaborative control strategy significantly reduces response delay, effectively minimizes control overshoot, and decreases hydraulic pressure-fluctuation amplitude by over 85.2%. This work provides a novel methodology for optimizing steering stability under nonlinear interference scenarios, offering substantial engineering applicability and promotion value. Full article

Ultrahigh-temperature ceramic composites based on hafnium diboride have a wide range of applications, including as components for high-speed aircraft and energy generation and storage devices. Consequently, developing methodologies for their fabrication and studying their properties are of paramount importance, in particular in using them as an electrode material for energy storage devices with increased oxidation resistance. This study investigates the behavior of ceramic composites based on the HfB2-HfO2-SiC system, obtained using 15 vol% Ti2AlC MAX-phase as a sintering component, under the influence of subsonic flow of dissociated air. It was determined that incorporating the modifying component (Ti2AlC) altered the composition of the silicate melt formed on the surface during ceramic oxidation. This modification led to the observation of a protective antioxidant function. Consequently, liquation was observed in the silicate melt layer, resulting in the formation of spherical phase inhomogeneities in its volume with increased content of titanium, aluminum, and hafnium. It is hypothesized that the increase in the high-temperature viscosity of this melt prevents it from being carried away in the form of drops, even at a surface temperature of ~1900–2000 °C. Despite the established temperature, there is no sharp increase in its values above 2400–2500 °C. This is due to the evaporation of silicate melt from the surface. In addition, the electrochemical behavior of the obtained material in a liquid electrolyte medium (KOH, 3 mol/L) was examined, and it was shown that according to the value of electrical conductivity and specific capacitance, it is a promising electrode material for supercapacitors. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR), as an active microwave imaging system, has the capability of all-weather and all-time observation. In response to the challenges of aircraft detection in SAR images due to the complex background interference caused by the continuous scattering of airport buildings and the demand for real-time processing, this paper proposes a YOLOv7-MTI recognition model that combines the attention mechanism and involution. By integrating the MTCN module and involution, performance is enhanced. The Multi-TASP-Conv network (MTCN) module aims to effectively extract low-level semantic and spatial information using a shared lightweight attention gate structure to achieve cross-dimensional interaction between “channels and space” with very few parameters, capturing the dependencies among multiple dimensions and improving feature representation ability. Involution helps the model adaptively adjust the weights of spatial positions through dynamic parameterized convolution kernels, strengthening the discrete strong scattering points specific to aircraft and suppressing the continuous scattering of the background, thereby alleviating the interference of complex backgrounds. Experiments on the SAR-AIRcraft-1.0 dataset, which includes seven categories such as A220, A320/321, A330, ARJ21, Boeing737, Boeing787, and others, show that the mAP and mRecall of YOLOv7-MTI reach 93.51% and 96.45%, respectively, outperforming Faster R-CNN, SSD, YOLOv5, YOLOv7, and YOLOv8. Compared with the basic YOLOv7, mAP is improved by 1.47%, mRecall by 1.64%, and FPS by 8.27%, achieving an effective balance between accuracy and speed, providing research ideas for SAR aircraft recognition. This article presents the design, development, and evaluation of an AI-based assistant tailored to support users in the application of the Specific Operations Risk Assessment (SORA) methodology for unmanned aircraft systems. Built on a customized language model, the assistant was trained using system-level instructions with the goal of translating complex regulatory concepts into clear and actionable guidance. The approach combines structured definitions, contextualized examples, constrained response behavior, and references to authoritative sources such as JARUS and EASA. Rather than substituting expert or regulatory roles, the assistant provides process-oriented support, helping users understand and complete the various stages of risk assessment. The model’s effectiveness is illustrated through practical interaction scenarios, demonstrating its value across educational, operational, and advisory use cases, and its potential to contribute to the digital transformation of safety and compliance processes in the drone ecosystem. Due to the limited endurance of UAVs, especially in scenarios involving large areas and dense target nodes, it is challenging for multiple UAVs to complete diverse tasks while ensuring timely execution. Toward this, we propose a cross-platform system consisting of an aircraft carrier (AC) and multiple UAVs, which makes unified task planning for included heterogeneous platforms to maximize the efficiency of the entire combat system. The carrier-based UAV swarm mission planning problem is formulated to minimize completion time and resource utilization, taking into account large-scale targets, multi-type tasks, and multi-obstacle environments. Since the problem is complex, we design a decoupled framework to simplify the solution by decomposing it into two levels: upper-level AC path planning and bottom-level multi-UAV cooperative mission planning. At the upper level, a drop point determination method and a discrete genetic algorithm incorporating improved A* (DGAIIA) are proposed to plan the AC’s path in the presence of no-fly zones and radar threats. At the bottom level, an improved differential evolution algorithm with a market mechanism (IDEMM) is proposed to minimize task completion time and maximize UAV utilization. Specifically, a dual-switching search strategy and a neighborhood-first buying-and-selling mechanism are developed to improve the search efficiency of the IDEMM. In the course of studying automatic control for students majoring in Mechatronics and Control Engineering, Python has become the dominant language in artificial intelligence and machine learning as an essential tool for the analysis and design of automatic control systems. In response to the widespread issues of an inadequate ability to apply automatic control principles, an unclear understanding of logical architecture, and a lack of coding abilities in programming for complex systems, we introduce the “Wenxinyiyan” large language models (LLMs) tool. For the height control of the V-22 Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft in helicopter mode, we guided students to develop a control system in a structured question-and-answer learning process and a model-driven approach. This assisted students in establishing a computer-aided design framework for complex systems and enhancing their understanding of control logic. The LLM assisted students in writing high-quality and clean code. Full article

This paper addresses the problem of loss of control during flight caused by failures of flight control surfaces. It presents a study of an emergency thrust control system based on linear-quadratic control with integral action. The research encompasses an analysis of thrust modulation control characteristics, a review of existing control systems, and a detailed description of the development process, including the research platform configuration, identification of the aircraft state-space model, control law design, integration of system components within the MATLAB and Simulink environment, and software-in-the-loop testing conducted in the X-Plane 11 flight simulator using a Boeing 757-200 model. The study also investigates the issue of control channel cross-coupling and its impact on simultaneous control of the aircraft’s longitudinal and lateral dynamics. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed emergency system provides adequate controllability, with settling times of approximately 12 s for achieving a flight path angle setpoint of +5°, and 13 s for attaining a maximum (limited) roll angle of 20°, achieved in separate manoeuvres. Furthermore, simulated landing attempts suggest that the system could potentially enable successful landings at approach speeds significantly higher than standard recommendations. However, further investigation is required to address decoupling of control channels, ensure system stability, and evaluate control performance across a broader range of aircraft configurations. Modern aircraft increasingly utilizes highly integrated electronic equipment, driving continuously increasing heat dissipation demands. Vapor compression refrigeration systems demonstrate stronger alignment with future aircraft thermal management trends, leveraging their superior volumetric cooling capacity, high energy efficiency, and independence from engine bleed air. This paper reviews global research progress on aircraft vapor compression refrigeration systems, covering performance optimization, dynamic characteristics, control strategies, fault detection, and international development histories and typical applications. Analysis identifies emerging challenges under large-temperature-range cooling requirements, with comparative assessment establishing zeotropic mixture auto-cascade vapor compression refrigeration systems as the optimal forward-looking solution. Finally, recognizing current research gaps, we propose future research directions for onboard auto-cascade vapor compression refrigeration systems: optimizing refrigerant mixtures for flight conditions, achieving efficient gas-liquid separation during variable overloads and attitude conditions, and developing model predictive control with intelligent optimization to ensure reliability. Medium and large-sized birds exhibit remarkable agility and maneuverability in flight, with their flapping motion encompassing degrees of freedom in flapping, twist, and swing, which enables them to adapt effectively to harsh ecological environments. This study proposes a flapping–twist coupled driving mechanism for large-scale flapping-wing aircraft by mimicking the motion patterns of birds. The mechanism generates simultaneous twist and flapping motions based on the phase difference of double cranks, allowing for the adjustment of twist amplitude through modifications in crank radius and phase difference. The objective of this work is to optimize the lift and thrust of the flapping wing to enhance its flight performance. To achieve this, we first derived the kinematic model of the mechanism and conducted motion simulations. To mitigate the effects of the flapping wing’s flexibility, a rigid flapping wing was designed and manufactured. Through wind tunnel experiments, the flapping wing system was tested. The results demonstrated that, compared to the non-twist condition, there exists an optimal twist amplitude that slightly increases the lift of the flapping wing while significantly enhancing the thrust. It is hoped that this study will provide guidance for the design of multi-degree-of-freedom flapping wing mechanisms. Full article
