Emerging technologies offer cultural institutions opportunities to expand their audiences and make their content more accessible. Augmented Virtuality (AV), which integrates real-world content into virtual environments, shows particular potential. It enables the transmission of live or pre-recorded stage performances, such as concerts and theater productions, from the stage to virtual audiences via increasingly affordable head-mounted displays (HMDs). However, as AV remains under-researched, little is known about which recording features enable an immersive user experience while maintaining cost-efficiency—an essential requirement for resource-constrained cultural institutions. In this context, we investigate the influence of features of audio and video recordings on key dimensions of user experience in the use case of a real opera performance integrated into a virtual opera house. We conducted a 2 × 2 within-subjects study with 30 participants to measure the effects of 2D versus 3D videos and stereophonic versus spatial audio rendering on several key dimensions of user experience. The results show that spatial audio has a positive impact on Place Illusion, whereas video dimensionality had no significant effect. Recommendations for the design of AV applications are derived from study results, aiming at balancing immersive user experience and cost-efficiency for virtual cultural participation. Full article

This study positions the podcast Question Everything as an innovative case of metanarrative podcast journalism amid the growing crisis of distrust in news media. Through in-depth interviews with host Brian Reed and producer Zach St. Louis, along with textual analysis of all 27 episodes of the first season, this study examines how self-reflexive narrative storytelling both critiques and reimagines journalism. The dual-method approach explores not only what the podcast says about journalism, but also how the performance of podcasting becomes a mode of journalistic epistemology. Grounded in Metajournalistic Discourse Theory, findings demonstrate how Question Everything challenges traditional definitions of journalism, enacting metajournalistic discourse through four mechanisms: (1) inviting and exploring criticism, (2) performing transparency in the editing process, (3) experimenting with epistemology, and (4) embracing uncertainty and ambiguity. This paper argues that podcasts like Question Everything enact a performative mode of journalism that reconfigures how audiences make sense of truth, credibility, and authority. Full article

Lithium-ion batteries suffer from severe capacity fading and start-up failure at low temperatures owing to restricted Li+ transport and deteriorated interfacial kinetics. To enable rapid and safe activation under such conditions, this study designs a microwave-driven dual-layer leakage-proof composite phase-change module (EPG–BN–CF–PAG), comprising an epoxy–graphene–boron nitride outer encapsulation and a ceramic fiber–boron nitride porous inner scaffold that adsorbs a paraffin–graphene phase-change core. The synergy between the dense outer shell and the internal adsorption framework affords excellent shape stability, with an enthalpy retention exceeding 95% and no visible leakage after 20 heating–cooling cycles. Owing to the strong microwave-absorption capability of graphene, the module can be rapidly heated from −10 °C to ~60 °C within 60 s while establishing a homogeneous and stable temperature field. Combined simulations and experiments show that the module efficiently transfers heat to a lithium-ion cell, raising its temperature from −10 °C to ~30 °C within 60 s and thus bringing it into a practical operating window. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy further reveals that the thermally induced activation markedly improves interfacial kinetics, reducing the bulk resistance from 500 Ω to 30 Ω and the charge-transfer resistance from 800 Ω to 30 Ω. This microwave-driven phase-change heating strategy features ultrafast response, excellent anti-leakage performance, and favorable thermal properties, providing an engineering-feasible thermal-management solution for the rapid cold start of lithium-ion batteries under extremely low-temperature conditions. An enantioselective Mannich reaction of 2-(2-nitrophenylsulfenylimino)acetamide is described. Under the optimized conditions using proline, triethylamine, and diarylthiourea additives, the initially formed Mannich adduct undergoes irreversible cyclization to afford cyclic hemiaminal products in 21–58% yield, with diastereomeric ratios ranging from 53:47 to 83:17. Enantioselectivity reaches up to 97% ee. The presence of N–H functionality of the substrate is crucial for this cyclization; in its absence, the Mannich adduct undergoes facile decomposition. Subsequent reduction in this intermediate efficiently furnished the corresponding homoserine derivative. Full article

Urban Heat Island effects and the general rise in outdoor temperatures are increasing the cooling demand in buildings. As a consequence, electrical cooling systems are becoming more common, increasing energy consumption and thus resulting in negative environmental impacts. Optimizing passive solutions that require no energy input can provide substantial benefits for building energy efficiency and urban sustainability. This study presents a research activity, financed by the EU-funded project LIFE SUPERHERO, that enhances existing roofing technologies based on passive cooling; defines an experimental method to assess their benefits in terms of energy savings; and finally evaluates their effectiveness in future climate scenarios based on greenhouse gas Representative Concentration Pathways across a set of mid-temperate/hot climate locations, also in comparison with traditional unventilated roofs. A new Climate Adaptation Efficiency Index (CAEI) was introduced to evaluate the energy efficiency potential of buildings equipped with highly ventilated and permeable clay tile roofs compared to a baseline scenario without the intervention. The results confirm the potential of ventilated and air-permeable roofs to reduce incoming heat flux and support cooling energy-efficiency planning. Indeed, CAEI values were above 20%, reaching 45–50% in hot Mediterranean and arid climates and 28–33% in cooler/temperate contexts. Under future climate scenarios, benefits further increase in the hottest Mediterranean locations, reaching up to 66%, while rising to about 44% in temperate climates, with an average increase of 10–15 percentage points, highlighting the strong potential of highly ventilated and air-permeable clay tile roofs as an effective, affordable, sustainable, and easy-to-install climate adaptation strategy. Notch signalling is a critical regulator of multiple developmental processes through its ability to control gene expression and thereby influence cell fate specification and cell proliferation through direct cell–cell communication. Although Notch signalling has been implicated in myogenesis during late embryogenesis, its role in early mesoderm development has been largely unexplored. Endocytosis of the Notch ligand Delta and the Notch receptor extracellular domain, a critical step in Notch pathway activation, has been extensively observed in the ventral mesoderm of the early Drosophila embryo, indicating a potential for Notch signalling activity in this early germ layer. Here, we present evidence that genes critical to mesoderm development require and are responsive to Notch signalling activity. Using a novel light-inducible Optogenetic variant of the Notch intracellular domain (OptoNotch), which affords precise spatial and temporal control over ectopic activation of Notch signalling, in combination with high-resolution fluorescent RNA in situ hybridization and qPCR, we identified a set of mesodermal genes whose expression is directly regulated by Notch signalling. We also provide evidence that Notch signalling indirectly regulates the dorsal–ventral patterning program mediated by the Toll signalling pathway through the Dorsal/Twist/Snail gene network. Our findings demonstrate that Notch signalling regulates ventral mesoderm patterning and is critical for establishing the mesoderm–mesectoderm–ectoderm boundary by regulating gene expression patterns and providing negative feedback on the upstream patterning network. Background/Objectives: First row transition metal ions have recently regained attention in coordination chemistry as alternatives to gadolinium-based paramagnetic contrast agents, motivated by emerging safety concerns associated with certain Gd3+-based contrast agents. In this study, we report the development of a novel homoleptic diketonate Fe3+ complex functionalized with biocompatible indole moieties. We investigate its potential as a paramagnetic relaxation agent by evaluating its ability to modulate the T1 and T2 relaxation times of water proton. Methods: Iron(III) tris-1,3-(1-methylindol-3-yl)propanedionate [Fe(BIP)3] was synthesized via a thermal method from bis(1-methylindol-3-yl)-1,3-propanedione (HBIP) using Fe(ClO4)3∙6 H2O as the metal source. The complex was characterized by UV-Vis, IR and NMR spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry–thermogravimetric analysis, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Fe(BIP)3 aggregation behavior in aqueous environment, including size and morphology of aggregates, was investigated using dynamic light scattering and scanning electron microscopy. Incorporation of the aggregates into phospholipid vesicles was evaluated by fluorescence resonance energy transfer and fluorescence correlation spectroscopy. The paramagnetic properties of monomeric Fe(BIP)3 were probed in solution by nuclear magnetic resonance recurring to the Evans bulk magnetization method. Results: The designed synthetic procedure successfully afforded Fe(BIP)3, which was fully characterized by UV-Vis and IR spectroscopy, as well as single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Aqueous solutions of Fe(BIP)3 spontaneously formed rice-grain-shaped nanoscale aggregates of hydrodynamic radius ≈ 30 nm. Incorporation of these aggregates into phospholipid vesicles enhanced their stability. The longitudinal r1 and transverse r2 relaxivities of Fe(BIP)3 aggregates were assessed to be 1.92 and 52.3 mM−1s−1, respectively, revealing their potential as paramagnetic relaxation agents. Conclusions: Fe(BIP)3 aggregates, stabilized through incorporation into phospholipid vesicles, demonstrate promising potential as novel paramagnetic relaxation agents in aqueous environments. The informal street food sector serves as a vital component of urban economies in South Africa, providing affordable nutrition and employment. However, this industry struggles to comply with required health and safety practices and standards. This study protocol outlines a mixed-methods investigation into hygiene practices, regulatory compliance, and the intersection with business sustainability among informal food vendors in Johannesburg’s inner city. This study aims to investigate how vendors’ perceptions of health risks and benefits influence compliance behaviours and, in turn, how these behaviours impact operational efficiency, financial stability, and customer trust. Grounded in the Health Belief Model (HBM) and the Balanced Scorecard (BSC) framework, the research seeks to explore both behavioural drivers and performance outcomes associated with hygiene adherence. The study will employ structured stall observations, semi-structured vendor interviews, and customer surveys across high-density vending zones. Quantitative data will be analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics, while qualitative data will be thematically analysed and triangulated with observed practices. The expected outcome is to identify key barriers and enablers of hygiene compliance and demonstrate how improved food safety practices contribute to business resilience, customer trust, and urban public health. The findings aim to inform inclusive policy and innovative business support strategies that integrate informal vendors into safer and more sustainable food systems. Full article

Radiation is widely used as a powerful tool for inducing molecular transformation and expanding chemical diversity; however, its application in clinically relevant antibiotics remains limited. Minocycline (1), a clinically used tetracycline antibiotic, was subjected to gamma irradiation at doses of up to 30 kGy, resulting in the formation of a previously unreported radiation-induced derivative, minocyclinosin A (2). The structure of the newly generated compound was elucidated by comprehensive spectroscopic analyses, including one- and two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and high-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, which revealed extensive A-ring cleavage, degradation, and recyclization to form a unique cyclopenta[b]anthracene-type tetracycline scaffold. Biological evaluation revealed that minocyclinosin A exhibited enhanced anti-inflammatory activity by suppressing lipopolysaccharide-induced nitric oxide production in RAW 264.7 macrophages, while maintaining antibacterial activity against skin inflammation-associated Staphylococcus species. High-performance liquid chromatography further demonstrated a clear dose-dependent molecular conversion, with irradiation at 30 kGy affording minocyclinosin A as the major product with a conversion efficiency of approximately 78.3%. There is an increasing number of academic and regulatory investigations into the behavioral and psychological implications of using Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) services due to their rapid growth. There have been extensive investigations into impulse purchases using BNPL services; however, there has been relatively little focus placed upon examining post-purchase regret associated with BNPL service use. The purpose of this paper is to present a systematic review of the extant literature investigating how BNPL service use relates to both impulsive purchasing behavior and post-purchase regret. A total of ten empirical studies were identified through a comprehensive search of the Scopus database according to the PRISMA 2020 guidelines, which were all published between 2018 and 2025. The results indicated that BNPL features, including deferred payments, perceived affordability, and urgency cues, are consistent predictors of both greater impulsive purchasing and lower levels of payment salience. The results of this review, however, reveal that many existing studies have failed to directly measure post-purchase regret and instead rely on proxy indicators, including financial distress, emotional discomfort, and decreased well-being. These findings, therefore, highlight a major theoretical and methodological void in the existing literature. In addition, by providing a synthesis of the current evidence base, this review aims to provide a clearer understanding of how BNPL features influence both consumer decision-making processes and post-purchase emotional responses; additionally, this review highlights the necessity for future research to utilize valid measures of regret, longitudinal designs and ethically informed analytical frameworks when investigating the psychological impacts of adopting BNPL services. Food insecurity is not merely an outcome of individual deprivation but a place-based expression of how urban food systems operate within unequal socio-spatial contexts. Using the Drivers–Pressures–State–Impacts–Responses (DPSIR) framework as a policy-relevant analytical lens, this study examines the Metropolitan Region of Rome to show how structural inequalities and uneven food infrastructures shape exposure to food-related risks. The results show that vulnerability is amplified by food price inflation, the rising cost of a healthy diet, and spatial gaps in retail provision—captured through the combined presence of food deserts and food blackouts—disproportionately affecting peripheral municipalities. State indicators, including the Food Insecurity Experience Scale (FIES), the Food Affordability Index (FAI), and the spatial distribution of FEAD beneficiaries, reveal a markedly uneven geography of food poverty, mirroring a higher prevalence of overweight, obesity, and diabetes. These spatial configurations point to obesogenic environments in which constrained affordability and limited accessibility restrict the capacity to maintain healthy diets, generating hidden social and health costs that disproportionately burden peripheral areas. Overall, food insecurity in Rome follows a pronounced centre–periphery gradient rooted in structural and institutional arrangements rather than incidental variation. Addressing this condition requires place-based, justice-oriented interventions that strengthen food infrastructures, improve coordination across governance scales, and place food security at the core of an integrated metropolitan Food Policy. The anti-Markovnikov addition of thiyl radicals, generated via one-electron oxidation of thiols, to C=C double bonds is a useful method for synthesizing unsymmetrical sulfides and has been widely applied in the preparation of pharmaceuticals and functional materials. However, conventional radical thiol–ene reactions require metal-based photoinitiators or organic photosensitizers, raising concerns about product isolation and environmental impact. Herein, we demonstrate an initiator-free thiol–ene coupling via electrochemical oxidation of thiols. Using a microfluidic electrochemical reactor, the electrochemically generated thiyl radicals undergo rapid and selective addition to alkenes, affording thioethers in reasonable yields. Substrate scope studies involving 13 alkenes and 13 thiols indicate that thiol acidity (pKa), alkene electronic properties, and steric effects play key roles in determining reaction efficiency. Although further optimization is required to improve yields and broaden substrate scope, this electrochemical approach highlights the potential of thiol–ene coupling as a sustainable tool in green synthetic chemistry. Although plant-based convenience foods have gained significant market share, many are high in fat, salt, and sugar while low in nutrients. The current study aimed to develop a vegan oyster mushroom soup powder enriched with moringa, mung bean, and pumpkin. These ingredients were chosen for their high nutritional value and availability. Four soup formulas, each containing varying amounts of moringa (0%, 1%, 2%, and 3%), were prepared, and a sensory evaluation, proximate analysis, and total aerobic plate count were carried out. The 1% moringa formulation showed the highest consumer acceptance. In this formula, moisture, ash, protein, fat, fiber, carbohydrate, and energy content were reported as 13.6%, 7.6%, 16.3%, 2.2%, 9.8%, 50.5%, and 287 kcal/100 g, respectively. The novel powdered soup product had higher amounts of phenolic compounds, total antioxidants, and iron compared to local, commercially available equivalents. Total aerobic plate counts remained below 105 CFU/g; a common acceptability limit for dried soups, throughout the 4-month storage study under ambient conditions. Overall, the developed soup powder demonstrated superior nutritional quality and could support consumers in meeting their daily nutrient requirements. With further refinement, particularly by optimizing the drying process to better retain heat-sensitive nutrients, this product shows potential as an affordable and nutritious option to address inadequate protein intake and iron deficiency in Sri Lanka.
