This paper proposes a two-stage hybrid framework for biosignal quality validation that produces beat-level or segment-level labels for real-time filtering and offline dataset curation. The framework is quantitatively validated exclusively on ECG data. Its modular architecture is designed to extend to further non-stationary periodic biomedical time-series signals including photoplethysmography (PPG), impedance cardiography (ICG), phonocardiography (PCG), electromyography (EMG), and electroencephalography (EEG) through modality-specific parameter adaptation; however, this broader applicability currently reflects architectural extensibility rather than experimentally validated performance. A prerequisite is synchronized acquisition of the primary biosignal together with inertial motion sensing (IMU/accelerometer) and electrode impedance or lead-off status, with the IMU positioned near the sensing electrodes. The first stage performs sensor-integrity gating to reject intervals corrupted by motion or poor electrode contact. The second stage applies software signal quality indices to the remaining beats, including physiological plausibility constraints (R to R peaks analysis), DTW-based morphological consistency against adaptive templates, frequency domain SNR estimation, and baseline wander quantification. This study systematically evaluates and compares the classification performance of six complementary sensor-level and software-based signal quality assessment methods. When integrated within the proposed hybrid framework, validation against expert-annotated ECG quality labels from 20 healthy participants demonstrates high methodological classification accuracy (98.1%), achieving approximately a 98% F1-score, 99% sensitivity, and 97% specificity. Prospective validation on patient populations with cardiovascular pathology is identified as a necessary step toward clinical deployment. This modular approach improves the reliability of downstream analysis by preventing corrupted data from entering feature extraction and model training pipelines, enabling more stable physiological monitoring in free-living conditions, reducing false alarms in continuous monitoring applications, and generating higher-quality datasets for AI-based diagnostic systems. This paper proposes an adaptive layer-dependent threshold function (ALDTF) for denoising electrocardiogram (ECG) and multimode optical fiber-based cardiopulmonary signals. Based on wavelet transform, the method employs a layer-dependent threshold function strategy that utilizes the non-zero periodic peak (NZOPP) of the signal’s normalized autocorrelation function to adaptively determine the optimal threshold for each decomposition layer. The core idea applies soft thresholding at lower layers (high-frequency noise) to suppress pseudo-Gibbs oscillations, and hard thresholding at higher layers (low-frequency noise) to preserve signal amplitude and morphology. The experimental results show that for ECG signals contaminated with baseline wander (BW), electrode motion (EM) artifacts, muscle artifacts (MA), and mixed (MIX) noise, ALDTF outperforms existing methods—including SWT, DTCWT, and hybrid approaches—across multiple metrics. It achieves a ΔSNR improvement of 1.68–10.00 dB, ΔSINAD improvement of 1.68–9.98 dB, RMSE reduction of 0.02–0.56, and PRD reduction of 2.88–183.29%. The method also demonstrates excellent performance on real ECG and optical fiber cardiopulmonary signals, preserving key diagnostic features like QRS complexes and ST segments while effectively suppressing artifacts. ALDTF provides an efficient, versatile solution for physiological signal denoising with strong potential in wearable real-time monitoring systems. Full article

Accurate prediction of photovoltaic power generation is a pivotal factor for enhancing the operational efficiency of electrical grids and facilitating the stable integration of solar energy. This study introduces a holistic forecasting framework that achieves seamless integration of dual-stage decomposition, deep learning architectures, and an advanced metaheuristic algorithm, thereby significantly improving the prediction precision of PV power generation. Initially, the raw PV power sequences are processed using Improved Complete Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition with Adaptive Noise (ICEEMDAN) to capture multi-scale temporal characteristics. The derived components are subsequently categorized into high-, medium-, and low-frequency groups through K-means clustering to manage complexity. To address residual noise and non-stationary behaviors, the high-frequency constituents are further decomposed via Variational Mode Decomposition (VMD). The refined subsequences are then input into a TCN_BiGRU_Attention network, which employs temporal convolutional operations for hierarchical feature extraction, bidirectional gated recurrent units to model temporal correlations, and a multi-head attention mechanism to prioritize influential time steps. For hyperparameter optimization of the forecasting model, an Improved Crested Porcupine Optimizer (ICPO) is developed, integrating Chebyshev chaotic mapping for initialization, a triangular wandering strategy for local search, and Lévy flight to strengthen global exploration and accelerate convergence. Validation on real-world PV datasets indicates that the proposed model attains a Mean Squared Error (MSE) of 0.3456, Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE) of 0.5879, Mean Absolute Error (MAE) of 0.3396, and a determination coefficient (R2) of 99.59%, surpassing all benchmark models by a significant margin. This research empirically demonstrates the efficacy of the dual decomposition methodology coupled with the optimized hybrid deep learning network in elevating both the accuracy and stability of predictions, thereby offering a reliable and stable forecasting framework for PV power systems. Gamified virtual reality (VR) environments are increasingly used to enhance engagement and learning, yet most designs still adopt a one-size-fits-all approach that overlooks motivational diversity. The HEXAD framework, which classifies users into six player types, provides a promising lens for addressing this gap, but its predictive validity in immersive VR remains contested. This study investigates how HEXAD profiles shape navigation, time allocation, and engagement dynamics in an open-ended gamified VR environment. Thirty-two undergraduate participants, all regular gamers, completed the HEXAD scale before exploring a VR setting with five thematic islands without predefined tasks. System logs and screen recordings captured first island choices, sequential visit patterns, and time spent, and data were analyzed using qualitative pattern analysis alongside nonparametric statistics. The results showed significant associations between player type and initial choices, with Players favoring Game Island, Socialisers choosing Social Island, Philanthropists engaging most with Library, and Achievers and Free Spirits drawn to Experience. Kruskal–Wallis tests of exploration breadth revealed moderate effect sizes across types, though significance was limited by sample size. Three emergent strategies, Focused Explorers, Wanderers, and Strategic Switchers, captured motivational orientations beyond single metrics, while heat map visualizations highlighted clustering around Game and Experience Islands. By situating these findings within flow theory and inclusive–adaptive design principles, this study demonstrates how behavioral traces can link motivational typologies with embodied interaction. Overall, the results advance debates on HEXAD’s robustness and contribute practical pathways for developing adaptive, motivation-sensitive VR environments that support sustained engagement and inclusivity. Mind wandering (MW) is a significant safety risk in driving, yet research on its scope, underlying mechanisms, and mitigation strategies remains fragmented across disciplines. In this review guided by the PRISMA framework, we analyze findings from 64 empirical studies to address these factors. The presented study quantifies the prevalence of MW in naturalistic and simulated driving environments and shows its impact on driving behaviors. We document its negative effects on braking reaction times and lane-keeping consistency, and we assess recent advancements in objective detection methods, including EEG signatures, eye-tracking metrics, and physiological markers. We also identify key cognitive and contextual risk factors, including high perceived risk, route familiarity, and driver fatigue, which increase MW episodes. Also, we survey emergent countermeasures, such as haptic steering wheel alerts and adaptive cruise control perturbations, designed to sustain driver engagement. Despite these advancements, the MW research shows persistent challenges, including methodological heterogeneity that limits cross-study comparisons, a lack of real-world validation of detection algorithms, and a scarcity of long-term field trials of interventions. Our integrated synthesis, therefore, outlines a research agenda prioritizing harmonized measurement protocols, on-road algorithm deployment, and rigorous evaluation of countermeasures under naturalistic driving conditions. Achieving both accurate and real-time monitoring heartbeat signals by non-invasive sensing techniques is challenging due to various noise interferences. In this paper, we propose an enhanced discrete wavelet transform (DWT) method that incorporates objective denoising quality assessment metrics to determine accurate thresholds and adaptive threshold functions. Our approach begins by denoising ECG signals from various databases, introducing several types of typical noise, including additive white Gaussian (AWG) noise, baseline wandering noise, electrode motion noise, and muscle artifacts. The results show that for Gaussian white noise denoising, the enhanced DWT can achieve 1–5 dB SNR improvement compared to the traditional DWT method, while for real noise denoising, our proposed method improves the SNR tens or even hundreds of times that of the state-of-the-art denoising techniques. Furthermore, we validate the effectiveness of the enhanced DWT method by visualizing and comparing the denoising results of heartbeat signals monitored by fiber-optic micro-vibration sensors against those obtained using other denoising methods. The improved DWT enhances the quality of heartbeat signals from non-invasive sensors, thereby increasing the accuracy of cardiovascular disease diagnosis. Full article

Can we think of the legendary Wandering Jew as a monster? The figure does not easily fit the common definition of a monster and yet, the Wandering Jew is extraordinary. In the medieval and early modern sources of the legend, the Wandering Jew, who once sinned against Christ and is therefore doomed to be an immortal eyewitness to the Passion, serves as a model for the faithful. In his 1796 gothic novel, The Monk, Matthew Lewis creates a new strand of the Wandering Jew tradition, a gothic Wandering Jew, a being transformed from wonder to horror through association with centuries of antisemitic accusations against Jews as agents of conspiracy, ritual murder, nefarious magic, and disease. This essay argues that a variation on the representation of the gothic Wandering Jew, which began with Coleridge’s Rime of the Ancient Mariner, further adapts the legend to make the Wanderer not a sign of redemption, but the monstrous cause of catastrophe not only for himself, but for those he encounters. This article, the first scholarly examination of John Blackburn’s 1972 Wandering Jew novel, Devil Daddy, situates it within the strand of the legend that represents the Wandering Jew as a monstrous source of destruction. Blackburn’s novel, written during a time of global concern over the development of biological weapons of mass destruction, portrays the Wandering Jew’s curse as a source of manmade global environmental catastrophe. In this way, the sin of the monstrous Wandering Jew becomes one not against Christ, but against humankind. Even as Devil Daddy explicitly references the horrors of the Holocaust, this representation of a monstrous Wandering Jew haunts the text, undermining its sympathetic representation of Jewish suffering. Electrocardiographic signals (ECG) are ubiquitous, which justifies the research of their optimal storage and transmission. However, proposals for non-uniform signal sampling must take into account the priority of diagnostic data accuracy and record integrity, as well as robustness to noise and interference. In this study, two novel methods are introduced, each utilizing a distinct neural network architecture for optimizing non-uniform sampling of ECG signal. A transformer model refines each time point selection through an iterative process using gradient descent optimization, with the goal of minimizing the mean squared error between the original and resampled signals. It adaptively modifies time points, which improves the alignment between both signals. In contrast, the Temporal Convolutional Network model trains on the original signal, and gradient descent optimization is utilized to improve the selection of time points. Evaluation of both strategies’ efficacy is performed by calculating signal distances at lower and higher sampling rates. First, a collection of synthetic data points that resembled the P-QRS-T wave was used to train the model. Then, the ECG-ID database for real data analysis was used. Filtering to remove baseline wander followed by evaluation and testing were carried out in the real patient data. The results, in particular MSE = 0.0005, RMSE = 0.0216, and Pearson’s CC = 0.9904 for 120 sps in the case of the transformer patient data model, provide viable paths for maintaining the precision and dependability of ECG-based diagnostic systems at much lower sampling rate. Outcomes indicate that both techniques are effective at improving the fidelity between the original and modified ECG signals. Full article

In the task assignment problem of multi-UAV collaborative reconnaissance, existing algorithms have issues with inadequate solution accuracy, specifically manifested as large spatial spans and knots of routes in the task execution of UAVs. To address the above challenges, this paper presents a multi-UAV task assignment model under complex conditions (MTAMCC). To efficiently solve this model, this paper proposes an elite wolf pack algorithm based on probability threshold (EWPA-PT). The EWPA-PT algorithm combines the wandering behavior in the traditional wolf pack algorithm with the genetic algorithm. It introduces an ordered permutation problem to calculate the adaptive wandering times of the detective wolves in a specific direction. During the calling phase of the algorithm, the fierce wolves in the wolf pack randomly learn the task assignment results of the head wolf. The sieging behavior introduces the Metropolis criterion from the simulated annealing algorithm to replace the distance threshold in traditional wolf pack algorithms with a probability threshold, which dynamically changes during the iteration process. The wolf pack updating mechanism leverages the task assignment experience of the elite group to reconstruct individual wolves, thereby improving the individual reconstruction’s efficiency. Experiments demonstrate that the EWPA-PT algorithm significantly improves solution accuracy compared to typical methods in recent years. Full article

In today’s rapidly evolving manufacturing landscape with the advent of intelligent technologies, ensuring smooth equipment operation and fostering stable business growth rely heavily on accurate early fault detection and timely maintenance. Machine learning techniques have proven to be effective in detecting faults in modern production processes. Among various machine learning algorithms, the Backpropagation (BP) neural network is a commonly used model for fault detection. However, due to the intricacies of the BP neural network training process and the challenges posed by local minima, it has certain limitations in practical applications, which hinder its ability to meet efficiency and accuracy requirements in real-world scenarios. This paper aims to optimize BP networks and develop more effective fault warning methods. The primary contribution of this research is the proposal of a novel hybrid algorithm that combines a random wandering strategy within the main loop of an equilibrium optimizer (EO), a local search operator inspired by simulated annealing, and an adaptive learning strategy within the BP neural network. Through analysis and comparison of multiple sets of experimental data, the algorithm demonstrates exceptional accuracy and stability in fault warning tasks, effectively predicting the future operation of equipment and systems. This innovative approach not only overcomes the limitations of traditional BP neural networks, but also provides an efficient and reliable solution for fault detection and early warning in practical applications. With the rise of robotics within various fields, there has been a significant development in the use of mobile robots. For mobile robots performing unmanned delivery tasks, autonomous robot navigation based on complex environments is particularly important. In this paper, an improved Gray Wolf Optimization (GWO)-based algorithm is proposed to realize the autonomous path planning of mobile robots in complex scenarios. First, the strategy for generating the initial wolf pack of the GWO algorithm is modified by introducing a two-dimensional Tent–Sine coupled chaotic mapping in this paper. This guarantees that the GWO algorithm generates the initial population diversity while improving the randomness between the two-dimensional state variables of the path nodes. Second, by introducing the opposition-based learning method based on the elite strategy, the adaptive nonlinear inertia weight strategy and random wandering law of the Butterfly Optimization Algorithm (BOA), this paper improves the defects of slow convergence speed, low accuracy, and imbalance between global exploration and local mining functions of the GWO algorithm in dealing with high-dimensional complex problems. In this paper, the improved algorithm is named as an EWB-GWO algorithm, where EWB is the abbreviation of three strategies. Finally, this paper enhances the rationalization of the initial population generation of the EWB-GWO algorithm based on the visual-field line detection technique of Bresenham’s line algorithm, reduces the number of iterations of the EWB-GWO algorithm, and decreases the time complexity of the algorithm in dealing with the path planning problem. The simulation results show that the EWB-GWO algorithm is very competitive among metaheuristics of the same type. It also achieves optimal path length measures and smoothness metrics in the path planning experiments. Full article

During the last years, Electrocardiographic Imaging (ECGI) has emerged as a powerful and promising clinical tool to support cardiologists. Starting from a plurality of potential measurements on the torso, ECGI yields a noninvasive estimation of their causing potentials on the epicardium. This unprecedented amount of measured cardiac signals needs to be conditioned and adapted to current knowledge and methods in cardiac electrophysiology in order to maximize its support to the clinical practice. In this setting, many cardiac indices are defined in terms of the so-called bipolar electrograms, which correspond with differential potentials between two spatially close potential measurements. Our aim was to contribute to the usefulness of ECGI recordings in the current knowledge and methods of cardiac electrophysiology. For this purpose, we first analyzed the basic stages of conventional cardiac signal processing and scrutinized the implications of the spatial-temporal nature of signals in ECGI scenarios. Specifically, the stages of baseline wander removal, low-pass filtering, and beat segmentation and synchronization were considered. We also aimed to establish a mathematical operator to provide suitable bipolar electrograms from the ECGI-estimated epicardium potentials. Results were obtained on data from an infarction patient and from a healthy subject. First, the low-frequency and high-frequency noises are shown to be non-independently distributed in the ECGI-estimated recordings due to their spatial dimension. Second, bipolar electrograms are better estimated when using the criterion of the maximum-amplitude difference between spatial neighbors, but also a temporal delay in discrete time of about 40 samples has to be included to obtain the usual morphology in clinical bipolar electrograms from catheters. We conclude that spatial-temporal digital signal processing and bipolar electrograms can pave the way towards the usefulness of ECGI recordings in the cardiological clinical practice. The companion paper is devoted to analyzing clinical indices obtained from ECGI epicardial electrograms measuring waveform variability and repolarization tissue properties. Full article

The performance of a low-power single-lead armband in generating electrocardiogram (ECG) signals from the chest and left arm was validated against a BIOPAC MP160 benchtop system in real-time. The filtering performance of three adaptive filtering algorithms, namely least mean squares (LMS), recursive least squares (RLS), and extended kernel RLS (EKRLS) in removing white (W), power line interference (PLI), electrode movement (EM), muscle artifact (MA), and baseline wandering (BLW) noises from the chest and left-arm ECG was evaluated with respect to the mean squared error (MSE). Filter parameters of the used algorithms were adjusted to ensure optimal filtering performance. LMS was found to be the most effective adaptive filtering algorithm in removing all noises with minimum MSE. However, for removing PLI with a maximal signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), RLS showed lower MSE values than LMS when the step size was set to 1 × 10−5. We proposed a transformation framework to convert the denoised left-arm and chest ECG signals to their low-MSE and high-SNR surrogate chest signals. With wide applications in wearable technologies, the proposed pipeline was found to be capable of establishing a baseline for comparing left-arm signals with original chest signals, getting one step closer to making use of the left-arm ECG in clinical cardiac evaluations. A novel electrocardiogram (ECG) signal de-noising and baseline wander correction method based on complete ensemble empirical mode decomposition with adaptive noise (CEEMDAN) and wavelet threshold is proposed. Although CEEMDAN is based on empirical mode decomposition (EMD), it represents a significant improvement of the original EMD by overcoming the mode-mixing problem. However, there has been no previous study on using CEEMDAN to de-noise ECG signals, to the authors’ best knowledge. In the proposed method, the original noisy ECG signal is decomposed into a series of intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) sorted from high to low frequency by CEEMDAN. Each IMF is then analyzed by the autocorrelation method to find out the first few high frequency IMFs containing random noise, and these IMFs should be de-noised by the wavelet threshold. The zero-crossing rate (ZCR) of all IMFs, including final residue, are computed, and the IMFs with ZCR less than a certain value are removed. Finally, the remaining IMFs are reconstructed to obtain the clean ECG signal. The proposed algorithm is validated through experiments using the MIT–BIH ECG databases, and the results show that the random noise in the ECG signal can be effectively suppressed, and at the same time the baseline wander can be corrected efficiently.
