Selective outcome-reporting bias refers to the selective reporting of a subset of study findings. This methodological limitation may occur in cancer-related acupuncture studies, where valid empirical studies on psychometric performance are still lacking. We assessed the risk of selective outcome reporting bias in studies published in English that were included in a systematic review on acupuncture for preventing cancer chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting. For each study, we searched for registry availability and, if present, assessed its validity. We described each study outcome (nausea, vomiting, or both) according to the following seven items: type of outcome, domain, specific measurement, specific metric, type of data, methods of aggregation, and timepoint unit and time. Eleven studies published between 1987 and 2019 in English were evaluated. Only four (36%) had a registry, of which only two were prospective and therefore considered valid. Discrepancies were found in the specific measurement of the outcome in two studies and in the specific metric. In many other cases, discrepancies were not evaluable due to missing information. No study reported complete outcomes as planned in the published protocol. Communication about the importance of prospective trial registration, including outcome details, should be enforced to reduce the risk of selective outcome reporting bias in oncology acupuncture studies. Background: This systematic review evaluates the efficacy of rehabilitation-focused exercise interventions for lumbar degenerative disc disease (DDD), a leading cause of chronic low back pain. Methods: Following PRISMA guidelines, a comprehensive search was conducted across international and regional databases (PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Magiran, SID, and Noormags) covering the period from January 2010 to January 2025. The review protocol was registered with the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO) under registration number CRD420251088811. Using keywords such as “lumbar DDD,” “exercise therapy,” and “rehabilitation,” a total of 2495 records were identified. After screening, 20 studies—including clinical trials, quasi-experimental, and experimental designs—met the inclusion criteria and were assessed using the McMaster Critical Review Form for Quantitative Studies. Results: Interventions such as hydrotherapy, core stability training, Pilates, and suspension exercises were found to significantly reduce pain and improve functional outcomes. While multimodal approaches (e.g., aquatic exercise combined with acupuncture) showed positive effects, the comparative studies revealed no significant differences between modalities. Suspension training demonstrated superior efficacy in pain reduction compared to isolated core stability exercises. The methodological quality of included studies ranged from good to excellent, with the majority rated as very good or excellent (McMaster scores: 8 “excellent,” 7 “very good,” and 5 “good”). Common limitations among the studies included methodological heterogeneity, small sample sizes (n = 14–30), and insufficient long-term follow-up. Conclusions: Exercise-based rehabilitation is an effective strategy for managing lumbar DDD. Evidence particularly supports the use of suspension training and aquatic therapy for superior improvements in pain and functional outcomes. Future research should aim to adopt standardized protocols, recruit larger sample sizes, and include extended follow-up periods to produce more robust and generalizable findings. Full article

Background/Objectives: Children with cancer suffer due to the underlying disease and prescribed cancer-directed therapies, and non-pharmacologic modalities may offer improved symptom control without additional medications. We sought to elicit knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs of Pediatric Hematology Oncology (PHO) providers surrounding the incorporation of acupuncture for symptom management for their patients. Methods: A cross-sectional survey instrument was created, formatted, and delivered to physicians and advanced practice providers (APPs) at a single US pediatric cancer center. Survey responses were summarized by descriptive statistics. Results: A total of 78 PHO clinicians participated (response rate 29%). Most participants were interested in learning more about acupuncture (n = 42, 56.0%), yet rarely (n = 17, 22.7%) or never (n = 46, 61.3%) recommend acupuncture to patients. Most (n = 51, 73.9%) noted that they would support institutional development of an acupuncture program. Over half (n = 37, 52.2%) indicated their threshold for minimum hematologic indices for acupuncture includes a platelet count greater than 20,000 and absolute neutrophil count (ANC) greater than 500 (n = 37, 54.4%). Approximately two-thirds (n = 52, 66.7%) of participants noted that acupuncture could improve their patient’s quality of life, and most (n = 46, 67.6%) were not worried about harm. Conclusions: Acupuncture for symptom management is an evidenced-based, guideline-concordant recommendation for adults with cancer, but robust data in the pediatric oncology population are lacking. PHO providers do not routinely recommend acupuncture for patients but note that it may improve quality of life. Given their high symptom burden, rigorous studies of non-pharmacologic strategies for pediatric symptom management are vital. Acupuncture should be examined as a potential beneficial adjunct. This review explores current and emerging neuromodulation techniques targeting the cardiac autonomic nervous system for the treatment and prevention of atrial and ventricular arrhythmias. Arrhythmias remain a significant cause of morbidity and mortality, with the autonomic nervous system playing a crucial role in arrhythmogenesis. Interventions span surgical, pharmacological, and bioelectronic methods. We discuss the range of neuromodulation methods targeting the stellate ganglion, the spinal region, the parasympathetic system, and other promising methods. These include stellate ganglion block, stellate ganglion ablation, cardiac sympathetic denervation, subcutaneous electrical stimulation, thoracic epidural anesthesia, spinal cord stimulation, dorsal root ganglion stimulation, vagus nerve stimulation, baroreflex activation therapy, carotid body ablation, renal denervation, ganglionated plexi ablation, acupuncture, and transcutaneous magnetic stimulation. Myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) are chronic blood cancers characterized by overproduction of blood cells, leading to increased thrombotic and ischemic risk. Patients frequently experience symptoms including fatigue, abdominal discomfort, and complications from thrombotic events, which significantly impact the quality of life (QoL). Many patients inquire about complementary and integrative medicine (CIM) approaches, including nutritional interventions and supplements, creating opportunities for healthcare providers to engage in meaningful discussions guided by the principle of safety. This review examines the current evidence for integrative approaches in MPN management, focusing on nutrition, microbiota, supplements, mind–body techniques, and acupuncture. We analyze the available data on anti-inflammatory interventions, QoL improvement strategies, and treatment tolerance enhancement. The review provides clinicians with evidence-based guidance for safely integrating complementary therapeutic approaches with conventional MPN treatment. This integrative approach represents an opportunity to develop more comprehensive and personalized therapeutic paradigms in hematology while ensuring that complementary interventions serve as adjuncts to evidence-based medical treatment. Background and Objectives: Nausea and vomiting (NV) are common and distressing adverse effects among cancer patients undergoing treatment. Despite the widespread use of pharmacological antiemetics, these medications are often insufficient for controlling nausea and may cause medication interactions and side effects. Acupuncture has been proposed as a complementary therapy; however, the comprehensive analysis of its effects on NV across all emetogenic cancer treatments remains limited. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of acupuncture in managing NV in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or surgery. Materials and Methods: We conducted a comprehensive search across three electronic databases and two clinical registry platforms from inception to December 2024. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating acupuncture for NV in cancer patients were included. Risk ratios (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated using a random-effects model. Safety outcomes were assessed based on the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events (CTCAE). Results: Seventeen RCTs met the inclusion criteria, with twelve studies included in the meta-analysis. Acupuncture did not demonstrate significant effects on acute nausea (RR: 0.98; 95% CI: 0.84–1.15; p = 0.80) or acute vomiting (RR: 0.93; 95% CI: 0.65–1.32; p = 0.67). However, it significantly reduced delayed vomiting (RR: 0.76; 95% CI: 0.61–0.95; p = 0.02). Subgroup analysis demonstrated significant effects when acupuncture was administered for at least five days (RR: 0.56; 95% CI: 0.39–0.81; p = 0.002). The most frequently used acupoints were PC6, ST36, CV12, LI4, LR3, and ST25. No serious adverse events related to acupuncture treatments were reported, with only minor AEs such as localized bleeding and mild bruising observed. Conclusions: Acupuncture represents a safe and effective complementary therapy for managing delayed vomiting in cancer patients receiving emetogenic treatments. Clinicians can anticipate optimal benefits from at least five days of treatment, particularly using acupoints PC6, ST36, CV12, LI4, LR3, and ST25. Further high-quality studies are needed to establish standardized treatment regimens and explore its comprehensive effects on NV. Full article

Background and Objectives: Bell’s palsy, characterized by acute idiopathic facial nerve paralysis, exhibits variable recovery outcomes influenced by treatment timing, modality, and patient comorbidities. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of corticosteroid-based treatment (Ear, Nose, and Throat [ENT]), nerve blocks/physical therapy (Pain Medicine), and acupuncture/herbal medicine (Traditional Korean Medicine [KM]) and identify predictors of recovery and recurrence. This retrospective cohort study leverages South Korea’s pluralistic healthcare system, where patients choose specialties, to provide novel insights into departmental treatment outcomes. Materials and Methods: We analyzed 600 patients treated within 72 h of Bell’s palsy onset (2010–2024) at Wonkwang University Hospital, South Korea, using propensity score matching (PSM) (1:1:1) for age, sex, comorbidities, and initial House–Brackmann (HB) grade. The primary outcome was complete recovery (HB grade I) at 6 months; secondary outcomes included recovery time, recurrence, complications, and patient satisfaction. Multivariate logistic regression identified predictors. Results: The ENT group achieved the highest complete recovery rate (87.5%, phi = 0.18) versus Pain Medicine (74.0%) and KM (69.5%) (p < 0.001), with the shortest recovery time (4 weeks, Cohen’s d = 0.65 vs. KM). Synkinesis was lowest in the ENT group (6.0%). ENT treatment (OR: 1.75; 95% CI: 1.29–2.37) and early corticosteroid application (OR: 1.95; 95% CI: 1.42–2.68) predicted recovery. Hypertension (OR: 4.40), hyperlipidemia (OR: 8.20), and diabetes (OR: 1.40) increased recurrence risk. Subgroup analyses showed that ENT treatment was most effective for severe cases (HB grade IV: 90% recovery vs. 65% in KM, p < 0.01). Conclusions: Corticosteroid-based treatment (ENT) yielded superior recovery outcomes. Comorbidity management is critical for recurrence prevention. Early ENT referral and integrated care models are recommended to optimize outcomes in diverse healthcare settings. Full article

Background: Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is a common, debilitating side effect of cancer treatment. Characterized by symptoms like pain, numbness, and muscle weakness, CIPN significantly impacts patients’ quality of life. Current management strategies vary, with limited consensus on effective treatments. This scoping review aims to explore comprehensive rehabilitation interventions for CIPN, focusing on enhancing patient well-being and functional abilities. Methods: A scoping review, guided by Arksey and O’Malley’s framework and Levac et al.’s refinements, was conducted to assess rehabilitation programs for CIPN. Searches across six databases were performed, with inclusion and exclusion criteria focusing on studies with physical rehabilitation interventions. Data were charted, detailing interventions, demographics, and outcomes. Results were synthesized descriptively and presented narratively with tables. Results: The review included 24 studies covering diverse cancer types and treatments, involving a total of 1167 participants. Various interventions for CIPN were assessed, and results were thematically categorized according to exercise category. Physical modalities like ultrasound and exercise showed promise in symptom relief for colorectal and breast cancer patients. No distinct advantage was found in the timing of exercise interventions. Complementary therapies such as acupuncture and yoga demonstrated effectiveness in managing CIPN symptoms. Conclusions: This review highlights the effectiveness of diverse physical and complementary interventions in managing CIPN, advocating for their integration into standard protocols. It emphasizes the need for holistic, patient-centered approaches that combine exercises, physical therapy, and complementary therapies to improve patient outcomes. These findings set a direction for future research and clinical practices focused on comprehensive and personalized CIPN management strategies. Full article

Background: Shoulder pain affects 20–40% of the global population and is associated with substantial healthcare costs. This study aimed to investigate the current clinical practice for shoulder pain in Korean medicine (KM) clinics and collate the insights to suggest updates to the Korean Clinical Practice Guidelines (KCPGs) for shoulder pain. Methods: A web-based survey was conducted among Korean Medicine Doctors (KMDs) from 6 March 2023 to 27 March 2023. The survey comprised 28 questions related to clinical practice, diagnosis, treatment, progress, prognosis, perception of KM on shoulder pain, and demographic characteristics. Some questions accepted multiple responses, whereas some were scaled response questions. Statistical analyses were performed on the collected data. Results: In total, 788 KMDs participated in the survey. More than 40% reported treating over 20 shoulder pain patients monthly. Diagnosis primarily relied on pain pattern, range of motion (ROM), activities of daily living (ADL), and social history. Prognostic valuation also relied on these parameters. Most KMDs used multiple treatment methods, including acupuncture, pharmacopuncture, cupping therapy, Chuna therapy, and herbal medicine. Conclusions: KMDs adopted a comprehensive multifactorial approach toward shoulder pain treatment. Insights from this survey will help update the previous KCPG for shoulder pain. Full article

The supposed meridians of traditional oriental medicine have been a cause of conflict between traditional and modern medical science. A possible resolution has been proposed: That extracellular vesicles, including exosomes, may be the transmitters of traditional therapies such as massage and acupuncture. This article develops that idea by proposing that the pathways between surface and deep structures may be laid down during the embryonic migration of cells from one region of the developing body to distant regions. This hypothesis depends on the proven targeting of vesicular communication via cell surface binding molecules and their complementary binding sites on target cells. The hypothesis is therefore experimentally testable. The article also draws attention to a strong analogy with Charles Darwin’s theory of pangenesis for particulate communication between the soma and germline. Full article

Use of Non-Pharmacological Approaches for Migraine Treatment: Results from the Migraine in Aotearoa New Zealand Survey

Background/Objectives: Migraine is a common neurological disease with a high disability burden. Despite this, many people with migraine do not take medication to prevent attacks, even when this is indicated. Many non-pharmacological approaches to migraine treatment exist, but little is known about how people with migraine use these options. Methods: The online Migraine in Aotearoa New Zealand (NZ) Survey collected responses from 530 people with migraine from August to October 2022. Questions included current and previous use of preventive medications, supplements (e.g., magnesium, riboflavin, coenzyme Q10) and complementary therapies (e.g., meditation, biofeedback, yoga, acupuncture). Results: Around half of the respondents were currently using a supplement, 58% were currently using complementary therapy and half were taking preventive medication. One in five were using all three approaches for migraine prevention. Of those not taking preventive medication, 44% were taking a supplement, and 53% were using complementary therapy. For commonly used non-pharmacological approaches, 20–30% of people had tried them in the past but stopped due to lack of efficacy or other reasons. A high proportion of people would like to try approaches that are not readily available or expensive in NZ (e.g., neurostimulation devices and biofeedback). Conclusions: The use of supplements and complementary therapies for migraine prevention is common, often in combination with medication. There are high levels of discontinuation due to ineffectiveness and cost prohibits use for many. Improved access to non-pharmacological therapies, particularly as an adjunct, has the potential to improve outcomes for people with migraine, but more and better migraine treatment options are also needed. Methods: This review, registered in PROSPERO (CRD42023411712), systematically searched 11 databases up to 31 March 2023. We included randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing EATM interventions to control groups. Data extraction and quality assessment were performed independently by two authors. Meta-analysis used the inverse-variance method in Stata 12.0. A total of 37 RCTs involving 10,776 women (aged 29–38) were analyzed. Studies addressed infertility causes including polycystic ovary syndrome, tubal blockage, diminished ovarian reserve, and unexplained infertility. Acupuncture therapies included body, electro-, laser, and auricular acupuncture. Herbal treatments were administered as powders, pills, granules, decoctions, and ointments based on traditional Chinese formulas. Results: EATM interventions were associated with significant improvements in clinical pregnancy and live birth rates. Acupuncture increased clinical pregnancy rates (CPR: RR 1.316, 95% CI 1.171–1.480) and live birth rates (LBR: RR 1.287, 95% CI 1.081–1.533). HM also enhanced CPRs (RR 1.184) and LBRs (RR 1.147). Subgroup analysis showed true acupuncture and HM were more effective than sham or placebo. No significant differences in adverse events were found. Conclusions: EATM, particularly acupuncture and HM, appears to be a safe and effective complementary therapy that can be used to improve ART outcomes. Future research should focus on developing standardized acupuncture and herbal protocols to optimize integration with ART. Full article

Traditional oncological therapies have contributed to reducing the global cancer burden; however, they have not achieved complete eradication, nor have they effectively prevented relapses, minimized toxicity, or preserved immune function. Recent advances, particularly the introduction of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) and CAR-T cell therapies, have markedly improved clinical outcomes and overall survival in certain cancer subtypes. Nevertheless, response rates remain suboptimal, and adverse immunological events are frequent. This review starts by highlighting the FDA-approved ICIs currently utilized in cancer immunotherapy, emphasizing those that have demonstrated clinical efficacy in recent years. The true focus of our analysis is on the latest clinical applications of near-infrared photoimmunotherapy (NIR-PIT). This emerging modality is evaluated in patients with head and neck cancers (HNC), particularly in cases that are unresectable, locally advanced, or recurrent. Finally, the review explores the current landscape and prospects of NIR-PIT, considering its potential to enhance therapeutic efficacy and extend relapse-free survival. Photoimmunotherapy is a promising, molecularly targeted option for patients with limited prognosis, offering new hope where conventional therapies fail. By synthesizing recent clinical trial data, this work highlights how NIR-PIT could bridge the translational gap between preclinical research and clinical practice. The integration of advanced technologies and interdisciplinary collaboration among researchers, clinicians, and technologists will be critical in optimizing NIR-PIT, improving its accuracy, efficacy, and safety, and ultimately advancing standards of cancer care and patient survival. Spinal deformities, particularly thoracolumbar kyphosis, affect approximately one-third of patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD) and significantly impair their quality of life and mobility. Conventional treatments, including levodopa and surgical interventions, have limited efficacy, necessitating alternative therapies. In this report, a 76-year-old woman with PD and severe thoracolumbar kyphosis (TK: 77.7°; sagittal vertical axis [SVA]: 95.55 mm) experienced postural instability and gait impairment. She underwent integrative postural rehabilitation (acupuncture, pharmacopuncture, Chuna spinal manual therapy, thermotherapy, and bodyweight exercises). A 4-week inpatient treatment improved spinal alignment (TK: 61.1°; SVA: 77.84 mm), gait, postural stability (MDS-UPDRS score improved by 3 points), and functional outcomes, with reductions in the Oswestry Disability Index (70 to 31) and pain severity (Numeric Rating Scale: 50 to 40). No adverse events were observed. Integrative postural rehabilitation can mitigate paraspinal muscle atrophy and fatty infiltration by promoting protein synthesis, neurotrophic factor expression, and proprioceptive neuromodulation. Our literature review suggests that proprioceptive stimulation and exercise enhances postural stability and gait, aligning with the outcomes of this case. This report suggests that integrative rehabilitation may improve kyphotic deformities and related motor dysfunctions in patients with PD. Further research is warranted to validate the treatment’s efficacy and long-term benefits. Full article

Background/Objectives: Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a major neurodegenerative condition, mainly treated using dopamine-based therapies. However, the side effects and limitations of these therapies hinder their use. This study aimed to analyze the utilization of Korean medicine (KM) by patients with PD in Korea. Methods: Data of the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service–National Patient Sample were used to investigate the status and trend of KM utilization by patients with PD in Korea from January 2010 to December 2019. Data of 18,562 patients were included, and analyses were performed on the status of KM and Western medicine (WM) utilization, cost of care, prescribed medications, comorbidities, and characteristics of patients with PD. Results: The number of patients who utilized KM services for PD gradually increased over the 10-year period, with 10.6% of all patients with PD using KM services in 2019. In addition, the number of KM users with PD, number of claims, and expenses all showed an increase. The rate of increase in KM service utilization was greater than that of WM. Among KM services, acupuncture had the highest expense (50.6%). Regarding comorbidities in patients with PD, musculoskeletal diseases were the most common (58.6%). Among WM medications prescribed for the KM users, dopa and dopa derivatives (15.5%) and anti-dementia drugs (11.7%) were the most common. Conclusions: This study provides useful information on KM utilization status and trends among patients with PD and the characteristics of these patients. Follow-up research is warranted on the utilization status of more diverse KM services. Full article
