As part of contemporary urban culture, murals support place making and city identity. While much attention has been paid to their role in activating public space during daylight hours, their presence after dark remains largely unexamined. This paper analyzes how mural content interacts with night-time illumination. The research draws on case studies, photographs, luminance measurements, and lighting simulations. It evaluates how existing lighting systems support or undermine the legibility and impact of commercial murals in urban environments. It explores whether standardized architectural lighting guidelines suit murals, how color and surface affect visibility, and which practices improve night-time legibility. The study identifies a gap in existing lighting strategies, noting that uneven lighting distorts intent and reduces public engagement. In response, a new design tool—the Floodlighting Content Readability Map—is proposed to support artists and planners in creating night-visible murals. This paper situates mural illumination within broader debates on creative urbanism and argues that lighting is not just infrastructure, but a cultural and aesthetic tool that extends the reach and resonance of public art in the 24 h city. It further emphasizes the need for interdisciplinary collaboration and a multi-contextual perspective—encompassing visual, social, environmental, and regulatory dimensions—when designing murals in cities. This article explores the concept of textuality as embedded within contemporary architecture, understood as the capacity of buildings to generate meanings, narratives, and interpretations that transcend their physical and functional dimensions. An interdisciplinary approach is adopted, integrating architectural theory, semiotics, hermeneutics, and cultural studies, positioning architecture as a form of symbolic production deeply intertwined with current social and technological contexts. The primary aim is to demonstrate how certain paradigmatic buildings operate as open texts that engage in dialogue with their users, urban surroundings, and cultural frameworks. The methodology combines theoretical analysis with an in-depth study of three emblematic cases: the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and the Seattle Public Library. The findings reveal that these buildings articulate multiple layers of meaning, fostering rich and participatory interpretive experiences that influence both the perception and construction of public space. The study concludes that contemporary architecture functions as a narrative and symbolic device that actively contributes to the shaping of collective imaginaries. The article also identifies the study’s limitations and proposes future research directions concerning architectural textuality within the context of emerging digital technologies. Full article

Sport Participation and Gender Differences in Dietary Preferences: A Cross-Sectional Study in Italian Adults

Background: The relationship between sports participation and food preferences in adults, as well as the influence of gender, is still unclear. Objective: The objective of this study was to investigate the association between sports participation and individual food preferences and to explore potential gender differences among sports participants in a large group of Italian adults. Methods: This cross-sectional study involved 2665 adults (aged ≥ 18 years) who lead normal lives and underwent a routine lifestyle and dietary assessment at a clinical centre specialising in nutrition, metabolic health, and lifestyle counselling in Rome. Participants completed an online questionnaire on food preferences (19 foods) and sports practice. Multivariate logistic regression models, adjusted for age, sex, and smoking, were used to assess associations. Results: Sports participation was defined as engaging in structured physical activity at least once per week and was reported by 53.5% of subjects (men: 60.1%; women: 49.0%; p < 0.0001). After adjustment, active individuals were significantly more likely to prefer plant-based drinks, low-fat yoghurt, fish, cooked and raw vegetables, fruit, whole grains, tofu, and dark chocolate (all p < 0.05) and less likely to prefer cow’s milk (p = 0.018). Among sport participants, males were more likely to prefer meat (general, white, red, processed) and eggs, while females preferred plant-based drinks. No significant gender differences were observed for dairy products, legumes, or fish. Differences in food preferences were also observed according to the type of sport, with bodybuilders showing higher preference for tofu and dark chocolate. The strongest associations were found in the 25–44 age group. Conclusions: Sports participation is independently associated with specific food preferences, characterised by greater preference for plant-based and fibre-rich foods, and gender differences in food choices persist even among active adults. These findings highlight the need to consider both sports participation and gender when designing nutritional interventions. Full article

Almost one in three firefighters develop mental health disorders at some point during their careers, a rate double that in the general population. Frequent exposures to potentially traumatic situations can contribute to symptoms of these disorders, two of the most common being depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). While various psychological interventions have been implemented among this group, reports of their effectiveness include mixed results. To this end, the current study endeavored to test the effectiveness of a 12-week intervention combining occupationally-tailored high-intensity functional training (HIFT) and psychological resilience training (RES) in reducing depressive and post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSSs), as well as increasing psychological resilience and mental wellbeing, in career firefighters. Thirty career firefighters completed four mental health measurements over 17 weeks while anthropometrics and physical performance (i.e., number of stations completed in 20 min during an eight-station simulated job-task circuit workout [T-CAC]) were measured pre- and post-intervention. Pre to post comparisons were made via repeated-measures t-tests. Significant mean differences were observed for T-CAC stations completed, PTSSs, and psychological resilience between pre- and post-intervention. In future interventions, researchers should actively engage firefighters, maximize integration with daily operations, and employ culturally-relevant practices to explore the links between physical and mental health. The integration of Inquiry-Based Learning (IBL) and mobile technologies can transform science education, offering experimentation opportunities to students from budget-constrained schools. This study investigates the efficacy of smartphone-assisted experimentation (SAE) within IBL to enhance pre-service science teachers’ understanding of human physiology and presents a newly developed and validated rubric for assessing their scientific skills. Students (N = 286) from a Science and Mathematics Teacher Education Program participated in a summative IBL activity (“Investigating the Human Physiology”—iHPhys) where they designed experimental projects using smartphone applications to collect body sign data. The scoring rubric, assessing seven criteria including hypothesis formulation, methodological design, data presentation, and conclusion writing, was validated as substantial to almost perfect inter-rater reliability. Results reveal that students exhibited strong skills in hypothesis clarity, theoretical grounding, and experimental design, with a high degree of methodological innovation observed. However, challenges persisted in predictive reasoning and evidence-based conclusion writing. The students were strongly interested in inquiring about the cardiovascular and nervous systems. Correlational analyses suggest a positive relationship between project originality and overall academic performance. Thus, integrating SAE and IBL fosters critical scientific competencies, creativity, and epistemic cognition while democratizing access to scientific experimentation and engaging students in tech-savvy pedagogical practices. The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in education offers novel opportunities to enhance critical thinking while also posing challenges to independent cognitive development. In particular, Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HCAI) in education aims to enhance human experience by providing a supportive and collaborative learning environment. Rather than replacing the educator, HCAI serves as a tool that empowers both students and teachers, fostering critical thinking and autonomy in learning. This study investigates the potential for AI to become a collaborative partner that assists learning and enriches academic engagement. The research was conducted during the 2024–2025 winter semester within the Pedagogical and Teaching Sufficiency Program offered by the Audio and Visual Arts Department, Ionian University, Corfu, Greece. The research employs a hybrid ethnographic methodology that blends digital interactions—where students use AI tools to create artistic representations—with physical classroom engagement. Data was collected through student projects, reflective journals, and questionnaires, revealing that structured dialog with AI not only facilitates deeper critical inquiry and analytical reasoning but also induces a state of flow, characterized by intense focus and heightened creativity. The findings highlight a dialectic between individual agency and collaborative co-agency, demonstrating that while automated AI responses may diminish active cognitive engagement, meaningful interactions can transform AI into an intellectual partner that enriches the learning experience. These insights suggest promising directions for future pedagogical strategies that balance digital innovation with traditional teaching methods, ultimately enhancing the overall quality of education. Furthermore, the study underscores the importance of integrating reflective practices and adaptive frameworks to support evolving student needs, ensuring a sustainable model. Full article

T-cell-engaging antibodies are a promising new type of treatment for patients with refractory or relapsed (R/R) diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, which has changed the prognosis and evolution of these patients in clinical trials. Bispecific antibodies (BsAbs) bind to two different targets (B and T lymphocytes) at the same time and in this way mimic the action of CAR (chimeric antigen receptor) T-cells. They are the T-cell-engaging antibodies most used in practice and are a solution for patients who do not respond to second- or later-line therapies, including chemoimmunotherapy, followed by salvage chemotherapy and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. They are a therapeutic option for patients who are ineligible for CAR T-cell therapy and are also active in those with prior exposure to CAR T-cell treatment. A remarkable advantage of BsAbs is their rapid availability, even if the disease progresses rapidly, unlike CAR T-cell treatment, and they avoid the practical and financial challenges raised by autologous CAR T-cell therapies. CAR-T has been proven to have better efficacy compared to BsAbs, but cytokine release syndrome and neurotoxicity have appeared significantly more frequently in patients treated with CAR T-cells. The possibility of combining BsAbs with chemotherapy and their administration for relapses or as a frontline therapy is being studied to increase their efficacy. BsAbs are a life-saving therapy for many patients with diffuse large B-cell malignant non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (NHL) who have a poor prognosis with classical therapies, but are not without adverse effects and require careful monitoring. Gaming Against Frailty: Effects of Virtual Reality-Based Training on Postural Control, Mobility, and Fear of Falling Among Frail Older Adults

Background/Objectives: Frailty is a prevalent geriatric syndrome associated with impaired postural control and elevated fall risk. Although conventional exercise is a core strategy for frailty management, adherence remains limited. Virtual reality (VR)-based interventions have emerged as potentially engaging alternatives, but their effects on objective postural control and task-specific confidence in frail populations remain understudied. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a supervised VR training program using the Nintendo Ring Fit Plus™ on postural control, functional mobility, and balance confidence among frail community-dwelling older adults. Methods: Fifty-one adults aged ≥65 years classified as frail or prefrail were enrolled in a four-week trial. Participants were assigned to either a VR intervention group (n = 28) or control group (n = 23). Participants were non-randomly assigned based on availability and preference. Outcome measures were collected at baseline and post-intervention. Primary outcomes included center of pressure (CoP) metrics—sway area, mean velocity, and sway path. Secondary outcomes were the Timed Up and Go (TUG), Berg Balance Scale (BBS), Activities-specific Balance Confidence (ABC), and Falls Efficacy Scale–International (FES-I). Results: After adjusting for baseline values, age, and BMI, the intervention group showed significantly greater improvements than the control group across all postural control outcomes. Notably, reductions in sway area, mean velocity, and sway path were observed under both eyes-open and eyes-closed conditions, with effect sizes ranging from moderate to very large (Cohen’s d = 0.57 to 1.61). For secondary outcomes, significant between-group differences were found in functional mobility (TUG), balance performance (BBS), and balance confidence (ABC), with moderate-to-large effect sizes (Cohen’s d = 0.53 to 0.73). However, no significant improvement was observed in fear of falling (FES-I), despite a small-to-moderate effect size. Conclusions: A supervised VR program significantly enhanced postural control, mobility, and task-specific balance confidence in frail older adults. These findings support the feasibility and efficacy of VR-based training as a scalable strategy for mitigating frailty-related mobility impairments. Full article

Joint attention, the capacity of two or more individuals to focus on a common event simultaneously, is fundamental to human–human interaction, enabling effective communication. When considering the field of social robotics, emulating this capability might be necessary for promoting natural interactions and thus improving user engagement. Responding to joint attention (RJA), defined as the ability to react to external attentional cues by aligning focus with another individual, plays a critical role in promoting mutual understanding. This study examines how RJA impacts user engagement during human–robot interaction. The participants play a turn-taking game against a social robot under two conditions: with our RJA system active and with the system inactive. Auditory and visual stimuli are introduced to simulate real-world dynamics, testing the robot’s ability to detect and follow the user’s focus of attention. We use a twofold approach to evaluate the system’s impact on the user’s experience during the interaction. On the one hand, we use head pose telemetry to quantify attentional aspects of engagement, including measures of distraction and focus during the interaction. On the other hand, we use a post-experimental questionnaire incorporating the User Engagement Scale Short Form to assess engagement. The results regarding telemetry data reveal reduced distraction and improved attentional consistency, highlighting the system’s ability to maintain attention on the current task effectively. Furthermore, the questionnaire responses show that RJA significantly enhances self-reported engagement when the system is active. We believe these findings confirm the value of attentional mechanisms in promoting engaging human–robot interactions. Full article

Regional Differences in Awareness of Oral Frailty and Associated Individual and Municipal Factors: A Cross-Sectional Study

Background/Objectives: Despite growing interest in oral frailty as a public health issue, no nationwide study has assessed regional differences in oral frailty awareness, and the factors associated with such differences remain unclear. This study investigated regional differences in oral frailty awareness among older adults in Japan and identified the associated individual- and municipal-level factors, focusing on local policy measures and community-based oral health programs. Methods: A cross-sectional analysis was conducted using data from the 2022 wave of the Japan Gerontological Evaluation Study. The analytical sample comprised 20,330 community-dwelling adults aged ≥65 years from 66 municipalities. Awareness of oral frailty was assessed via self-administered questionnaires. Individual- and municipal-level variables were analyzed using multilevel Poisson regression models to calculate prevalence ratios (PRs). Results: Awareness of oral frailty varied widely across municipalities, ranging from 15.3% to 47.1%. Multilevel analysis showed that being male (PR: 1.10), having ≤9 years (PR: 1.10) or 10 to 12 years of education (PR: 1.04), having oral frailty (PR: 1.04), and lacking civic participation (PR: 1.06) were significantly associated with lack of awareness. No significant associations were found with municipal-level variables such as dental health ordinances, volunteer training programs, or population density. Conclusions: The study found substantial regional variation in oral frailty awareness. However, this variation was explained primarily by individual-level characteristics. Public health strategies should focus on enhancing awareness among socially vulnerable groups—especially men, individuals with low educational attainment, and those not engaged in civic activities—through targeted interventions and community-based initiatives. The Evolving Treatment Landscape for the Elderly Multiple Myeloma Patient: From Quad Regimens to T-Cell Engagers and CAR-T

Multiple myeloma (MM) is predominantly a disease of the elderly. In recent years, a surge of highly effective plasma cell therapies has revolutionized the care of elderly multiple myeloma (MM) patients, for whom frailty and age-related competing causes of mortality determine management. Traditionally, the treatment of newly diagnosed elderly patients has centered on doublet or triplet combinations composed of immunomodulators (IMIDs), proteasome inhibitors (PIs), anti-CD38 monoclonal antibodies (mAbs), and corticosteroids producing median progression-free survival (PFS) rates between 34 and 62 months. However, recently, a series of large phase III clinical trials examining quadruplet regimens of PIs, IMIDs, corticosteroids, and anti-CD38 mAbs have shown exceptional outcomes, with median PFS exceeding 60 months, albeit with higher rates of peripheral neuropathy (≥Grade 2: 27% vs. 10%) when PIs and IMIDs are combined, and infections (≥Grade 3: 40% vs. 29–41%) with the addition of anti-CD38mAbs. The development of T-cell redirecting therapies including T-cell engagers (TCEs) and CAR-T cells has further expanded the therapeutic arsenal. TCEs have shown exceptional activity in relapsed disease and are being explored in the newly diagnosed setting with promising early results. However, concerns remain regarding the logistical challenges of step-up dosing, which often necessitates inpatient admission, the infectious risks, and the financial burden associated with TCEs in elderly patients. CAR-T, the most potent commercially available therapy for MM, offers the potential of a ‘one and done’ approach. However, its application to elderly patients has been tempered by significant concerns of cytokine release syndrome, early and delayed neurological toxicity, and its overall tolerability in frail patients. Robust data in frail patients are still needed. How CAR-T and TCEs will be sequenced among the growing therapeutic armamentarium for elderly MM patients remains to be determined. This review explores the safety, efficacy, cost, and logistical barriers associated with the above treatments in elderly MM patients. Full article

Smartphones have revolutionized our daily lives, becoming portable pocket computers with easy internet access. India, the second-highest smartphone and internet user, experienced a significant rise in smartphone usage between 2013 and 2024. Prolonged smartphone use, exceeding 20 min at a time, can lead to physical and mental health issues, including psychophysiological disorders. Digital devices and their extended exposure to blue light cause digital eyestrain, sleep disorders and visual-related problems. This research examines the impact of 1 h smartphone usage on visual fatigue among young Indian adults. A portable, low-cost system has been developed to measure visual activity to address this. The developed visual activity measurement system measures blink rate, inter-blink interval, and pupil diameter. Measured eye activity was recorded during 1 h smartphone usage of e-book reading, video watching, and social-media reels (short videos). Social media reels show increased screen variations, affecting pupil dilation and reducing blink rate due to continuous screen brightness and intensity changes. This reduction in blink rate and increase in inter-blink interval or pupil dilation could lead to visual fatigue. Full article

This article investigates the role of space in the fiction of Jeffrey Eugenides, focusing on The Virgin Suicides (1993) and Middlesex (2002) through the lens of spatial theory. Drawing on key thinkers such as Henri Lefebvre, Michel Foucault, Edward Soja, Yi-Fu Tuan, and Doreen Massey, the study explores how Eugenides constructs spatial environments that not only frame but actively shape the identities, desires, and traumas of his characters. In The Virgin Suicides, suburban domestic spaces are shown to function as heterotopias—sites of surveillance, repression, and mythologized femininity—while Middlesex engages with transnational and urban spaces to narrate diasporic and intersex identity as dynamic, embodied, and liminal. The analysis reveals that Eugenides uses space as both a narrative device and a thematic concern to interrogate gender, memory, and power. Rather than passive backdrops, the novelistic spaces become charged arenas of conflict and transformation, reflecting and resisting dominant socio-cultural discourses. This study argues that space in Eugenides’ fiction operates as a critical register for understanding the politics of belonging and the production of subjectivity. By situating Eugenides within the broader field of literary spatiality, this article contributes to contemporary debates in literary geography, gender studies, and American fiction. Full article

Urban population growth is intensifying pressure on mobility systems, with road transportation contributing to environmental and sustainability challenges. Policymakers must navigate complex uncertainties in addressing rising mobility demand while pursuing sustainability goals. Advanced technologies offer promise, but their real-world effectiveness in urban contexts remains underexplored. This meta-review comprised three complementary studies: a broad analysis of sustainable mobility with Norwegian case studies, and systematic literature reviews on digital twins and Big Data/AI applications in urban mobility, covering the period of 2019–2024. Using structured criteria, we synthesised findings from 72 relevant articles to identify major trends, limitations, and opportunities. The findings show that mobility policies often prioritise technocentric solutions that unintentionally hinder sustainability goals. Digital twins show potential for traffic simulation, urban planning, and public engagement, while machine learning techniques support traffic forecasting and multimodal integration. However, persistent challenges include data interoperability, model validation, and insufficient stakeholder engagement. We identify a hierarchy of mobility modes where public transit and active mobility outperform private vehicles in sustainability and user satisfaction. Integrating electrification and automation and sharing models with data-informed governance can enhance urban liveability. We propose actionable pathways leveraging Big Data and AI, outlining the roles of various stakeholders in advancing sustainable urban mobility futures. Full article

As augmented reality (AR) advertising becomes increasingly prevalent across digital platforms, understanding how its unique features influence consumer responses is critical for both theory and practice. Based on the elaboration likelihood model (ELM), this study develops and validates a dual-dimension content–dual-route processing model to investigate how different features of AR advertising influence consumer engagement. Specifically, it examines how product-related attributes (attractiveness, informativeness) and technology-related attributes (interactivity, augmentation) shape attitudes toward the ad and purchase intentions through cognitive (information credibility) and affective (enjoyment) pathways. Using data from an online survey (N = 299), the study applies partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) to test the proposed model. The results show that informativeness and augmentation significantly enhance information credibility, while attractiveness primarily influences emotional responses. Interactivity and augmentation positively influence cognitive and affective responses. Mediation analysis confirms the simultaneous activation of central and peripheral processing routes, with flow experience emerging as a significant moderator in selected pathways. By introducing a structured framework for AR advertising content, this study extends the applicability of the ELM in immersive media contexts. It underscores the combined impact of rational evaluation and emotional engagement in shaping consumer behavior and offers practical insights for designing effective AR advertising strategies.
