Amino acids (AAs), a type of nitrogen-based organic compounds in the atmosphere, are directly and indirectly related to climate change, and as their link to allergic diseases becomes more known, the need for quantitative analysis of ultrafine dust (PM2.5) will become increasingly necessary. When sensing water-soluble AAs using a gas chromatograph combined with a tandem mass spectrometer (GC-MS/MS), derivatization should be considered to increase the volatility and sensitivity of target analytes. In this study, two methods were used to compare and evaluate 13 AA derivatives in PM2.5 samples: N-tert-butyldimethylsilyl-N-methyltrifluoroacetamide with 1% tert-butyldimethylchlorosilane (MTBSTFA w/1% t-BDMCS), which is preferred for silylation, and ethyl chloroformate (ECF) with methanol (MeOH) for chloroformate derivatization. The most appropriate reaction conditions for these two derivative methods, such as temperature and time, and the analytical conditions of GC-MS/MS for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of AAs were optimized. Furthermore, the calibration curve, detection limit, and recovery of both methods for validating the quantification were determined. The two derivative methods were applied to 23 actual PM2.5 samples to detect and quantify target AAs. The statistical significances between pairwise measurements of individual AAs detected by both methods were evaluated. This study will help in selecting and utilizing appropriate derivative methods for the quantification of individual AAs in PM2.5 samples. Full article

In this study, the impact of moderate and high CO2 and O2 levels was compared to low and moderate gas combinations during prolonged storage on the quality of Regina sweet cherries harvested in different maturity stages, particularly in terms of decreasing internal browning. Fruits were harvested in two different maturity stages (Light and Dark Mahogany skin color) and stored in CA of 15% CO2 + 10% O2; 10% CO2 + 10% O2; 10% CO2 + 5% O2; 5% CO2 + 5% O2 and MA of 4 to 5% CO2 + 16 to 17% O2 for 30 and 40 days at 0 °C and 90% RH, followed by a marketing period. After the storage, both maturity stages significantly reduced internal browning, decay, and visual quality losses in CA with 10–15% CO2 and 10% O2. In addition, it preserved luminosity, total soluble solids (TSSs), titratable acidity (TA), and bioactive compounds such as anthocyanins and phenols. This treatment also maintained the visual appearance of the sweet cherries, favoring their market acceptance. At the same time, the light red fruits showed a better general quality compared to darker color after the storage. In conclusion, a controlled atmosphere with optimized CO2 and O2 concentrations, together with harvesting with a Light Mahogany external color, represents an effective strategy to extend the shelf life of Regina sweet cherries up to 40 days plus the marketing period, maintaining their physical and sensory quality for export markets. The present article aims to develop a technological scheme for processing zinc ferrite residue, which typically forms during the leaching of zinc calcine. This semi-product is currently processed through the Waelz process, the main disadvantage of which is the loss of precious metals with the Waelz clinker. The experimental results of numerous experiments and analyses have verified a technological scheme including the following operations: sulfuric acid leaching of zinc ferrite residue under atmospheric conditions; autoclave purification of the resulting productive solution to obtain hematite; chloride leaching of lead and silver from the insoluble residue, which was produced in the initial operation; and cementation with zinc powder of lead and silver from the chloride solution. Utilizing such an advanced methodology, the degree of zinc leaching is 98.30% at a sulfuric acid concentration of 200 g/L, with a solid-to-liquid ratio of 1:10 and a temperature of 90 °C. Under these conditions, 96.40% Cu and 92.72% Fe form a solution. Trivalent iron in the presence of seeds at a temperature of 200 °C precipitates as hematite. In chloride extraction with 250 g/L NaCl, 1 M HCl, and a temperature of 60 °C, the leaching degree of lead is 96.79%, while that of silver is 84.55%. In the process of cementation with zinc powder, the degree of extraction of lead and silver in the cement precipitate is 98.72% and 97.27%, respectively. When implementing this scheme, approximately 15% of the insoluble residue remains, containing 1.6% Pb and 0.016% Ag. Full article

Enhanced weathering of silicate rocks in agriculture is an option for atmospheric CO2 removal and fertility improvement. The objective of our work is to characterise some of the agricultural consequences of a basaltic powder amendment on soil-crop systems. Two doses of basalt (80 and 160 t ha−1) were applied to two types of slightly acid soils (sandy or silty clayey), derived from long-term trials at Bordeaux (INRAE, France) and Rothamsted Research (England), respectively. For each soil, half of the pots were planted with ryegrass; the other half were left bare. Thus, the experiment had twelve treatments with four replications per treatment. Soil pH increased with the addition of basalt (+0.8 unit), with a 5% equivalence of that of reactive chalk. The basalt contained macro- and micronutrients. Some cations extractable in the basalt before being mixed to the soil became more extractable with increased weathering, independent of plant cover. Plant uptake generally increased for macronutrients and decreased for micronutrients, due to increased stock (macro) and reduced availability (micronutrients and P), related to pH increases. K supplied in the basalt was responsible for a significant increase in plant yield on the sandy soil, linked to an average basalt K utilisation efficiency of 33%. Sweet cherry (Prunus avium L.) is becoming increasingly popular in China, but its postharvest quality deteriorates significantly during harvest storage and transport. Here, we investigated the efficiency of different modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) treatments on the quality and physiology of ‘Meizao’ sweet cherry during 60 days of cold storage (0 ± 0.5 °C). Fruits were sealed in four types of MAP low-density polyethylene (LDPE) liners (PE20, PE30, PE40, and PE50), with unsealed 20 μm LDPE packaging bags used as the control. Our findings demonstrated that PE30 packaging established an optimal gas composition (7.0~7.7% O2 and 3.6~3.9% CO2) that effectively preserved ‘Meizao’ sweet cherry quality. It maintained the fruit color, firmness, soluble solid content (SSC), titratable acidity (TA), and vitamin C (Vc) content while simultaneously delaying deteriorative processes such as weight loss, pedicel browning, and fruit decay. These results indicate that PE30 was the most suitable treatment for preserving the quality of ‘Meizao’ sweet cherries during cold storage. Furthermore, physiological research showed that significant inhibition of respiration rate was achieved by PE30, accompanied by maintained activities of antioxidant enzymes (CAT, POD, and SOD), which consequently led to reduced accumulations of ethanol and malondialdehyde (MDA) during cold storage. To date, no systematic studies have investigated the physiological and biochemical responses of ‘Meizao’ to different thickness-dependent LDPE-MAP conditions. These observations highlight the power of the optimized PE30 packaging as an effective method for extending the fruit storage life, delaying postharvest senescence, and maintaining fruit quality of ‘Meizao’ sweet cherry. Vibrio parahaemolyticus is the leading cause of bacterial diarrhea in humans from shellfish consumption. In Thailand, blood clam is a popular shellfish, but homemade cooking often results in insufficient heating. Therefore, consumers may suffer from food poisoning due to Vibrio infection. This study aimed to determine the effect of chitooligosaccharide conjugated with epigallocatechin gallate (COS-EGCG) at different concentrations (200 and 400 ppm) combined with high-voltage atmospheric cold plasma (HVACP) on inhibiting V. parahaemolyticus in vitro and in challenged blood clam meat. Firstly, HVACP conditions were optimized for gas composition and treatment time (20 and 60 s); a 70% Ar and 30% O2 gas mixture resulted in the highest ozone formation and a treatment time of 60 s was used for further study. COS-EGCG conjugate at 400 ppm with HVACP (ACP-CE400) completely killed V. parahaemolyticus after incubation at 37 °C for 6 h. Furthermore, an antibacterial ability of ACP-CE400 treatment against bacterial cells was advocated due to the increased cell membrane damage, permeability, and leakage of proteins and nucleic acids. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed cell elongation and pore formation, while confocal microscopy revealed disrupted biofilm formation. Additionally, the shelf life of challenged blood clam meat treated with ACP-CE400 was extended to nine days. SEM analysis revealed damaged bacterial cells on the meat surface after ACP-CE400 treatment, indicating the antibacterial activity of the combined treatment. Thus, HVACP combined with COS-EGCG conjugate, especially at a highest concentration (400 ppm), effectively inhibited microbial growth and extended the shelf life of contaminated blood clam meat. Several strains of the genus Serratia isolated from the rhizosphere of crops are plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) that may possess various traits associated with nitrogen metabolism, auxin production, and other characteristics. The objective of the present study was to investigate the in vitro and in vivo characteristics of the growth-promoting activity of S. liquefaciens UNJFSC 002 in potato plants. This strain was inoculated into potato varieties (Solanum tuberosum) under laboratory and greenhouse conditions to determine the bacterial strain’s ability to promote growth under controlled conditions. It was found that the S. liquefaciens strain UNJFSC 002 had a significantly greater effect on the fresh and dry weight of the foliage and induced a higher tuber weight per plant and larger tuber diameter compared to the uninoculated potato plants (p < 0.05). Additionally, in vitro, the strain demonstrated the ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen and produce indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), as well as the capacity to solubilise tricalcium phosphate in the laboratory. This research reveals the potential of S. liquefaciens UNJFSC 002 as an inoculant to improve potato production, demonstrating its ability to promote the growth and productivity of potato varieties suitable for direct consumption and processing under controlled conditions. The increasing demand for sustainable energy has spurred the exploration of advanced technologies for biodiesel production. This paper investigates the use of Dielectric Barrier Discharge (DBD)-generated low-temperature plasmas to enhance the conversion of fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs) into hydrogenated fatty acid methyl esters (H-FAMEs) and other high-value hydrocarbons. A key mechanistic advance is achieved via in situ distillation: at the reactor temperature, unsaturated C18 and C20 FAMEs remain liquid due to their low melting points, while the corresponding saturated C18:0 and C20:0 FAMEs (with melting points of approximately 37–39 °C and 46–47 °C, respectively) solidify and deposit on a glass substrate. This phase separation continuously exposes fresh unsaturated FAME to the plasma, driving further hydrogenation and thereby delivering high overall conversion efficiency. The non-thermal, energy-efficient nature of DBD plasmas offers a promising alternative to conventional high-pressure, high-temperature methods; here, we evaluate the process efficiency, product selectivity, and scalability of this room-temperature, atmospheric-pressure approach and discuss its potential for sustainable fuel-reforming applications. We present a corrosion-resistant quadrupole ion trap mass spectrometer (QIT-MS) designed for trace detection of volatiles in sulfuric acid aerosols, with a specific focus on phosphine (PH3). Here, we detail the gas calibration methodology using permeation tube technology for generating certified ppb-level PH3/H2S/CO2 mixtures, and report results from mass spectra with sufficient resolution to distinguish isotopic envelopes that validate the detection of PH3 at a concentration of 62 ppb. Fragmentation patterns for PH3 and H2S agree with NIST data, and signal-to-noise performance confirms ppb sensitivity over 2.6 h acquisition periods. We further assess spectral interferences from oxygen isotopes and propose a detection scheme based on isolated phosphorus ions (P+) to enable specific and interference-resistant identification of PH3 and other reduced phosphorus species of astrobiological interest in Venus-like environments. This work extends the capabilities of QIT-MS for trace gas analysis in chemically aggressive atmospheric conditions. Full article

Up-Cycling Broccoli Stalks into Fresh-Cut Sticks: Postharvest Strategies for Quality and Shelf-Life Enhancement

Broccoli stalks are considered an agro-industrial by-product that, in the context of fresh consumption, is undervalued, as only broccoli florets are typically marketed. This study evaluated the up-cycling of broccoli stalks into a value-added fresh-cut product through postharvest preservation strategies. Stalks were peeled, cut into sticks (8 × 8 mm × 50–100 mm), sanitised, packaged under modified atmosphere conditions, and stored at 5 °C. Treatments included (a) calcium ascorbate (CaAsc, 1% w/v), (b) trehalose (TREH, 5% w/v), (c) hot water treatment (HWT, 55 °C, 1 min), and several combinations of them. HWT alone was highly effective in reducing browning, a key factor for achieving an extended shelf-life, controlling microbial growth and respiration, and obtaining the highest sensory scores (appearance = 7.3 on day 11). However, it was less effective in preserving bioactive compounds. The HWT + CaAsc treatment proved to be the most effective at optimising quality and retaining health-promoting compounds. It increased vitamin C retention by 78%, antioxidant capacity by 68%, and total phenolic content by 65% compared to the control on day 11. This synergistic effect was attributed to the antioxidant action of ascorbic acid in CaAsc. TREH alone showed no preservative effect, inducing browning, elevated respiration, and microbial proliferation. Overall, combining mild thermal and antioxidant treatments offers a promising strategy to valorise broccoli stalks as fresh-cut snacks. An 11-day shelf-life at 5 °C was achieved, with increased content of health-promoting bioactive compounds, while supporting circular economy principles and contributing to food loss mitigation. The consumption of fresh fruit and vegetables is essential for a healthy diet as they contain a diverse composition of vitamins, minerals, fibre, and bioactive compounds. However, cross-contamination during harvest and post-harvest poses a high risk of microbial contamination. Therefore, handling fruit and vegetables during processing and contact with wet equipment and utensil surfaces is an ideal environment for microbial contamination and foodborne illness. Nevertheless, less attention has been paid to some emerging pathogens that are now increasingly recognised as transmissible to humans through contaminated fruit and vegetables, such as Arcobacter and Cronobacter species in various products, which are the main risk in fruit and vegetables. Cronobacter and Arcobacter spp. are recognised food-safety hazards because they pose a risk of foodborne disease, especially in vulnerable groups such as newborns and immunocompromised individuals. Cronobacter spp. have been linked to severe infant conditions—notably meningitis and sepsis—most often traced to contaminated powdered infant formula. Although Arcobacter spp. have been less extensively studied, they have also been associated with foodborne disease, chiefly from dairy products and meat. With this in mind, this review provides an overview of the main chemical and physical sanitisation methods in terms of their ability to reduce the contamination of fresh fruit and vegetable products caused by two emerging pathogens: Arcobacter and Cronobacter. Emerging chemical (organic acid compounds, extracts, and essential oils) and physical methods (combination of UV-C with electrolysed water, ultrasound, and cold atmospheric plasma) offer innovative and environmentally friendly alternatives to traditional approaches. These methods often utilise natural materials, less toxic solvents, and novel techniques, resulting in more sustainable processes compared with traditional methods that may use harsh chemicals and environmentally harmful processes. This review provides the fruit and vegetable industry with a general overview of possible decontamination alternatives to develop optimal and efficient processes that ensure food safety. Full article

Polylactic acid (PLA) fabrics exhibit significant sunlight reflectivity and high emissivity within the atmospheric window, making them suitable as the foundational material for this study. This research involves the modification of one side of the fabric with hydrophilic agents and titanium dioxide (TiO2), while the opposite side is treated with MXene and subsequently coated with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) to inhibit oxidation of the MXene. Through these surface modifications, a thermal management fabric based on PLA was successfully developed, capable of passively regulating temperature in response to environmental conditions and user requirements. The study discusses the optimal concentrations of TiO2 and MXene for the fabric, and characterizes and evaluates the functional surface of the PLA. Surface morphology analyses and tests indicate that the resulting functional PLA fabrics possess excellent ultraviolet (UV) resistance, favorable air permeability, high sunlight reflectivity on the TiO2-treated side, and superior photothermal conversion capabilities on the MXene-treated side. Furthermore, photothermal effect tests conducted under a light intensity of 1000 W/m2 reveal that the MXene-treated fabric exhibits a heating effect of approximately 25 °C, while the TiO2-treated side demonstrates a cooling effect exceeding 5 °C. This study presents the living coccolithophore communities and the morphological variability of Emiliania huxleyi in the South Aegean Sea from three sampling regions during winter-early spring (March 2017, March 2019) and summer (August 2019). Emphasis is given to March 2017 to monitor the variations in coccolithophore assemblages after an exceptionally cold event in December 2016, which resulted in newly produced dense waters that ventilated the Aegean deep basins. The assemblages displayed distinct seasonality with the predominance of E. huxleyi and Syracosphaera molischii during winter-early spring, associated with the water column mixing. By contrast, summer assemblages were featured by holococcolithophores and typical taxa of warm, oligotrophic upper waters. It seems that the phytoplanktonic succession as well as the nutrient supply to the upper euphotic layers were affected by the water column perturbation during the extreme winter of 2016–2017, which led to strong convective mixing and dense water formation. The decreased coccosphere densities during March 2017, accompanied by the notable presence of diatoms, were most probably associated with a prolonged diatom bloom, causing delay in the development of the coccolithophore community and resulting in a nitrogen-limited setting. Emiliania huxleyi morphometry showed the characteristic seasonal calcification trend of the Aegean, with the dominance of smaller coccoliths in the summer and increased coccolith length and width during the cold season. The intense cold conditions and wind-induced mixing during the winter of 2016–2017 possibly increased the absorption of atmospheric CO2 in surface waters, causing increased acidity and the subsequent presence of etched/undercalcified E. huxleyi coccoliths and other taxa, most probably implying in situ calcite dissolution. In the present study, a process for the production of 2,2,3,3,4,4,4-heptafluorobutyl acetate (HFBAc) is proposed for the first time. The production process of HFBAc from acetic acid (AAc) and 2,2,3,3,4,4,4-heptafluorobutan-1-ol (HFBol) was carried out at laboratory scale using batch reactive distillation (BRD). The process was conducted at atmospheric pressure in the presence of an acid catalyst, with an excess of AAc relative to HFBol (initial molar ratio of reagents HFBol/AAc is 45/55). During the BRD, the aqueous phase of the distillate was withdrawn from the system, while the organic phase of the distillate was returned as reflux. Since part of AAc is lost along with the aqueous phase of the distillate, a minor excess of AAc is reasonable for maximizing the conversion of the most expensive reagent—HFBol. The losses of AAc and HFBol with the aqueous phase of the distillate were less than 2 mole % and less than 0.5 mole % of the feed, respectively. The purity of HFBAc after BRD was 97.9 wt. %, and the conversion of HFBol exceeded 99 mole % of the feed. The purity of certain product fractions of HFBAc was greater than 99.6 wt. %. The obtained data can be used for industrial technology development to obtain HFBAc. Full article

The Nanmiao Emergency Groundwater Source Area, rich in H2SiO3, serves as a strategic freshwater reserve zone in western Jiangxi Province. However, the mechanisms underlying groundwater formation in this area remain unclear. This study applied a combination of statistical analysis, isotopic tracing, and hydrochemical modeling to reveal the hydrochemical characteristics and origins of groundwater in the region. The results indicate that Na+ and Ca2+ dominate the cations, while HCO3 and Cl dominate the anions. Groundwater from descending springs is characterized by low mineralization and weak acidity, with hydrochemical types of primarily HCO3–Na·Mg and HCO3–Mg·Na·Ca. Groundwater from boreholes is weakly mineralized and neutral, with dominant hydrochemical types of HCO3–Ca·Na and HCO3–Ca·Na·Mg, suggesting a deep circulation hydrogeochemical process. Hydrogen and oxygen isotope analysis indicates that atmospheric precipitation is the primary recharge source. The chemical composition of groundwater is mainly controlled by rock weathering, silicate mineral dissolution, and cation exchange processes. During groundwater flowing, water and rock interactions, such as leaching, cation exchange, and mixing, occur. This study identifies the recharge sources and circulation mechanisms of regional groundwater, offering valuable insights for the sustainable development and protection of the emergency water source area.
