This paper presents a scalable and low-cost Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) architecture designed to enhance learning in university-level courses, with a particular focus on supporting students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Recent advances in large language models (LLMs) have demonstrated considerable potential in educational contexts; however, their adoption is often limited by computational costs and the need for stable broadband access, issues that disproportionately affect low-income learners. To address this challenge, we propose a lightweight, mobile, and friendly RAG system that integrates the LLaMA language model with the Milvus vector database, enabling efficient on device retrieval and context-grounded generation using only modest hardware resources. The system was implemented in a university-level Data Mining course and evaluated over four semesters using a quasi-experimental design with randomized assignment to experimental and control groups. Students in the experimental group had voluntary access to the RAG assistant, while the control group followed the same instructional schedule without exposure to the tool. The results show statistically significant improvements in academic performance for the experimental group, with p < 0.01 in the first semester and p < 0.001 in the subsequent three semesters. Effect sizes, measured using Hedges g to account for small cohort sizes, increased from 0.56 (moderate) to 1.52 (extremely large), demonstrating a clear and growing pedagogical impact over time. Qualitative feedback further indicates increased learner autonomy, confidence, and engagement. These findings highlight the potential of mobile RAG architectures to deliver equitable, high-quality AI support to students regardless of socioeconomic status. The proposed solution offers a practical engineering pathway for institutions seeking inclusive, scalable, and resource-efficient approaches to AI-enhanced education. Full article

The maritime sector is undergoing a profound transformation driven by disruptive technologies and global decarbonization objectives, placing new demands on Maritime Education and Training (MET) systems. Equipping maritime professionals with competencies for low-carbon shipping is now as critical as technological advancement itself. This study examines how disruptive technologies can be effectively integrated into MET frameworks to support environmental sustainability, using Panama as a representative case study of a major flag and maritime service state. A mixed-methods approach was adopted, combining a structured literature review, expert surveys, and a multi-criteria decision-making analysis based on the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). The findings reveal a significant misalignment between existing MET curricula and the competencies required for decarbonized maritime operations. Key gaps include limited training in alternative fuels, emissions measurement and reporting, energy-efficient technologies, digital analytics, and regulatory compliance. Stakeholders also reported fragmented training provision, uneven access to emerging technologies, and weak coordination between academia, industry, and regulators, particularly in developing contexts. The results highlight the urgent need for curriculum reform and stronger cross-sector collaboration to align MET with evolving technological and regulatory demands. The study provides an applied, evidence-based framework for MET reform, with insights transferable to other systems facing similar decarbonization challenges. Full article

Accommodating Celiac Disease in Higher Education: Evidence-Informed National Recommendations

Objectives: We aimed to develop expert-informed recommendations for colleges and universities to support students with celiac disease (CeD) managing a gluten-free (GF) diet. Methods: A multidisciplinary panel of 40 stakeholders, including physicians, dietitians, a disability rights attorney, university staff, and students, was convened by the Celiac Disease Foundation to create expert-based and experience-informed recommendations. Over a 6-month period, the group conducted literature reviews, stakeholder interviews, and expert consensus discussions to identify common barriers and accommodations aligned with federal disability law. The expert panel collaboratively developed and revised an initial set of recommendations. Two rounds of structured voting were held during which panelists provided feedback to refine content and ensure clarity. All final recommendations were adopted with at least 90% of panelists voting in support. Results: The panel identified 24 accommodations across four domains: academics, housing, dining, and campus life. Academic recommendations include flexibility for illness-related absences, support for remote learning, and classroom modifications. Housing recommendations emphasize access to priority placement, appropriate appliances, and proximity to safe dining. Dining accommodations address GF food availability, ingredient transparency, staff training, and meal plan flexibility. Campus life recommendations ensure full participation in athletics, study abroad, social events, and internships, with supports for psychosocial well-being. Conclusions: This manuscript presents the first expert-informed recommendations focused specifically on the needs of college students with CeD. These recommendations are intended to support institutions as they develop strategies to enhance access to GF food, quality of life, educational supports, and student experience for those living with this chronic autoimmune condition. This study aims to (1) examine the impact of AI-driven learning tools (AI-LTs) on educational sustainability (EDS) and (2) investigate the mediating role of students’ engagement (SE) and the moderating effect of digital resilience (DR) in this relationship. Based on sociotechnical systems theory (STS), self-determination theory (SDT), and resilience theory, and (3) developing a multidimensional framework to explore how technological, psychological, and contextual factors interact to shape sustainable learning outcomes. Data were gathered from 387 university students in Saudi universities using a standardized questionnaire and subsequently analyzed utilizing SPSS version 28 and PROCESS Macro Version 4.0. The study performed multiple regression and moderated mediation to evaluate the proposed relationships. The results confirmed that AI-LTs significantly enhance educational sustainability. Based on the findings, AI-LTs significantly improve the long-term viability of education, particularly when it is tailored to individual students, encourages active participation, and is logical from a pedagogical perspective. Student engagement was found to influence the relationship, suggesting that when AI tools are utilized effectively, they foster a sustained commitment to education and improved learning outcomes. Furthermore, digital resilience has a significant influence on the connection between AI-LT–EDS, indicating that students who exhibited improved adaptability to digital challenges reaped considerable benefits. The research enhances the existing literature by integrating three complementary frameworks—STS, SDT, and resilience theory—to provide a comprehensive understanding of AI’s role in sustainable education. Practically, the study underscored the importance of AI integration strategies that improve digital resilience, student engagement, and structural imbalance. The results demonstrated that AI usage necessitates significant institutional support and improved technology to establish educational environments that are adaptable, resilient, and easily accessible to students. Chatbots have emerged as a promising interface for facilitating access to complex datasets, allowing users to pose questions in natural language rather than relying on specialized technical workflows. At the same time, remote sensing has transformed archaeological practice by producing vast amounts of imagery from LiDAR, drones, and satellites. While these advances have created unprecedented opportunities for discovery, they also pose significant challenges due to the scale, heterogeneity, and interpretative demands of the data. In related scientific domains, multimodal conversational systems capable of integrating natural language interaction with image-based analysis have advanced rapidly, supported by a growing body of survey and review literature documenting their architectures, datasets, and applications across multiple fields. By contrast, archaeological applications of chatbots remain limited to text-based prototypes, primarily focused on education, cultural heritage mediation or archival search. This review synthesizes the historical development of chatbots, examines their current use in remote sensing, and evaluates the barriers to adapting such systems for archaeology. Four major challenges are identified: data scale and heterogeneity, scarcity of training datasets, computational costs, and uncertainties around usability and adoption. By comparing experiences across domains, this review highlights both the opportunities and the limitations of integrating conversational AI into archaeological workflows. The central conclusion is that domain-specific adaptation is essential if multimodal chatbots are to become effective analytical partners in archaeology. Full article

Ultrasound-guided femoral vascular access (UFVA) is a crucial step in cardiovascular intervention, yet training models remain costly, anatomically limited, or insufficiently durable. This research aimed to develop and evaluate a reusable, self-healing vascularised leg phantom in collaboration with clinicians. This bifurcating vascular model was cast in Plastisol using a customisable silicone mould design. The material exhibited a Shore OO hardness of 18.0 ± 2.2, a speed of sound of 1454 ± 15 m/s, an acoustic attenuation of 1.66 ± 0.02 × 106 kg/m2s, and healed 18G needle lesions within 3 h. Training capabilities were evaluated in a workshop involving 18 medical students: FVA times improved by more than 60% after 5 min of free practice. Qualitative feedback was collected from 31 medical educators via a seven-question Likert survey, with most reporting they would adopt the phantom for teaching. Phantoms cost £7.87 for materials, yet educators valued the models at £100–£500, underscoring its perceived utility. Compared to commercial alternatives, this in-house production approach reduced costs by 10–60 times, achieving comparable durability and anatomical fidelity. This study establishes a scalable, ultra-low-cost method for producing anatomically realistic, self-healing vascular phantoms, validated for effective skill acquisition in both educational and research settings. This study investigates the factors influencing the expansion of organic farming in Europe between 2000 and 2022. Driven by consumer demand and EU support through the Common Agricultural Policy, organic farming has grown significantly. The research uses panel data and linear regression to assess the impact of socio-economic, agronomic, and environmental variables, including GDP, HDI, population density, education, broadband access, pesticide use, and biodiversity indicators. Data sources include FAOSTAT, FiBL, Eurostat, and the World Bank. The analysis also incorporates crop-specific organic farming data and environmental metrics such as ammonia emissions. The results show that expansion is shaped simultaneously by environmental pressures and socio-economic conditions: greater pesticide use, larger land availability, higher human development, and agricultural employment support organic adoption, while intensive livestock-related emissions and indicators of urbanization, such as broadband access, tend to constrain it. The phenomenon of underachievement of working-class young people in the English education system reveals long-standing prejudices surrounding English language development. This article reports the findings of a small-scale, qualitative study exploring the power of aesthetic experience in supporting the acquisition and development of the English language in a Further Education (FE) college in England. Findings provide evidence of how engagement with aesthetic experiences enables learners to access new ways of thinking and relate to new and complex ideas and concepts that may once have seemed beyond their reach. Findings also suggest that experimentation with various forms of art, as sources of inspiration, impacts confidence, engagement, and the learners’ experience of education in profound ways. This study challenges hierarchical and class-based socio-political forces which elevate one form of language or expression above another on the grounds that this can cause serious damage to the confidence and self-esteem of learners from lower socio-economic groups. With reference to data from the study and the works of Gadamer, Bernstein, and Dewey, the article concludes that pedagogic engagement through aesthetic experiences in FE can help learners from lower socio-economic groups access their Pedagogic Rights, to which they have been previously denied. Service-learning has emerged as a promising pedagogical approach to address social challenges while fostering students’ academic, socioemotional, and civic development. Despite the growing body of literature, there is a lack of systematic reviews evaluating its effectiveness in secondary education beyond the United States. Therefore, this systematic review aimed to synthesize the available empirical research on service-learning interventions implemented with secondary education students (grades 7–10) outside United States. Following The Campbell Collaboration guidelines, a comprehensive search was conducted across Web of Science and ProQuest, supplemented by other resources (general web search, hand searches, ongoing research, open access and relevant institutions and networks). Inclusion criteria required quantitative empirical studies (randomized controlled trials, quasi-experimental designs, or pretest–posttest designs) published from 2008 to June 2025 that measured academic, cognitive, socio-emotional, civic, and community outcomes using quantitative procedures. After screening, 10 studies met the inclusion criteria. The findings indicate that service-learning programs can generate positive outcomes on academic performance and non-cognitive skills. Nevertheless, methodological weaknesses and heterogeneity across studies prevent drawing robust conclusions. The review highlights the need for more rigorous research to strengthen the evidence base for service-learning among adolescents in systems worldwide. Full article

Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) has regional influence in the Caribbean, with a diversified economy focused on energy, manufacturing, and finance compared to the tourism-related economies of most of the other Caribbean islands. Notwithstanding, this has not translated into equitable opportunities for all, specifically for people with disabilities. A lack of disaggregated employment data thwarts effective policy planning for people with disabilities. This research sought to examine the barriers to their employment in T&T. Underpinned by the social model of disability, a concurrent mixed-methods approach was employed. Emanating from interviews with people with disabilities and key informants, challenges to employment access, employer perceptions, and apathy emerged as key themes, together with the underlying issues of a lack of legislation and inequitable access to mainstream education. The survey findings indicated that 64% of employers had never employed people with disabilities, 57% expressed neutrality regarding future employment of such individuals, and 69% had not introduced workplace accommodations. A key recommendation of the study is the establishment of an employer resource centre that assists employers in creating and maintaining inclusive workplace accommodations for people with disabilities. This study is the first in Trinidad and Tobago to examine these research objectives from multiple perspectives. Full article

Background: Peritoneal dialysis (PD) remains underutilized worldwide, partly due to limited patient education, misconceptions, and barriers to accessing reliable health information. Artificial intelligence (AI)-based chatbots have emerged as promising tools for improving health literacy, supporting shared decision-making, and enhancing patient engagement. However, concerns regarding content quality, reliability, and readability persist, and no study to date has systematically evaluated AI-generated content in the context of PD. Therefore, this study aimed to systematically evaluate the quality, reliability, and readability of AI-generated educational content on peritoneal dialysis using multiple large language model-based chatbots. Methods: A total of 45 frequently asked questions about PD were developed by nephrology experts and categorized into three domains: general information (n = 15), technical and clinical issues (n = 21), and myths/misconceptions (n = 9). Three AI-based chatbots, Gemini Pro 2.5, ChatGPT-5, and LLaMA Maverick 4, were prompted to generate responses to all questions. Each response was independently evaluated by two blinded reviewers for textual characteristics, readability using the Flesch Reading Ease Score (FRES) and Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level (FKGL), and content quality/reliability using the Ensuring Quality Information for Patients (EQIP) tool and the Modified DISCERN instrument. Results: Across all domains, significant differences were observed among the chatbots. Gemini Pro 2.5 achieved higher Flesch Reading Ease (FRES) scores (32.6 ± 10.5) compared with ChatGPT-5 (24.2 ± 11.7) and LLaMA Maverick 4 (16.2 ± 7.5; p < 0.001), as well as higher EQIP scores (75.4% vs. 59.4% and 61.5%, respectively; p < 0.001) and Modified DISCERN scores (4.0 [4.0–4.5] vs. 3.0 [3.0–3.5] and 3.0 [2.5–3.5]; p < 0.001). ChatGPT-5 demonstrated intermediate performance, while LLaMA Maverick 4 showed lower scores across evaluated metrics. Conclusions: These findings demonstrate differences among AI-based chatbots in readability, content quality, and reliability when responding to identical peritoneal dialysis–related questions. While AI chatbots may support health literacy and complement clinical decision-making, their outputs should be interpreted with caution and under appropriate clinical oversight. Future research should focus on multilingual, multicenter, and outcome-based studies to ensure the safe integration of AI into PD patient education. Full article

Grounded in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG4), specifically addressing the urgent need to increase relevant skills for decent work (Target 4.4) while ensuring inclusive access and quality (Targets 4.3, 4.5, 4.c), this study develops a province-level indicator system for the “talent chain” and “industry chain” and integrates entropy-weighted composite evaluation, a coupling coordination model, correlation tests, and mismatch typology classification to systematically assess the alignment between higher education talent formation and industrial demand across 31 Chinese provinces during 2000–2022. The analysis aims to characterize China’s phase-specific progress in SDG4-consistent development at the education–industry interface and to provide a theoretical and empirical basis for improving graduate job matching. The results show that (1) overall talent–industry matching improved steadily from 2000 to 2022, yet pronounced regional disparities persist, with eastern provinces generally outperforming central and western regions; (2) educational quality and structural inputs—such as faculty capacity, per-student expenditure, and the composition of human capital—are the primary drivers of talent-chain performance, whereas expansion-oriented indicators exhibit limited marginal contributions, implying that sustainable graduate job matching hinges more on quality upgrading and supply-structure optimization than on quantitative expansion alone; (3) industry-chain advancement is jointly driven by industrial scale, structural upgrading, and employment absorptive capacity, with the tertiary sector playing a particularly prominent role in shaping demand for higher-skilled labor; and (4) a divergence in driving mechanisms—quality- and structure-oriented on the education side versus scale- and structure-oriented on the industry side—combined with regional heterogeneity produces stage-specific mismatch typologies, suggesting remaining scope for structural alignment between higher education systems and industrial upgrading. Overall, strengthening regional coordination, integration, quality, and upgrading drives synergistic development, advancing SDG 4 targets by validating that quality-driven education reform is the key lever for sustainable employment in China. Background/Objectives: To promote sustainable and healthy diets, increased consumption of pulses (the edible grains of legumes) is recommended. Adolescence is a period in which perceptions and behaviours develop that can impact lifelong dietary behaviours. Therefore, this study aimed to understand how Australian adolescents perceive healthy, sustainable diets and perceive and consume pulses. Methods: Students (11–17 years old, median = 15 years, n = 33) in Brisbane, Australia, participated in school-based face-to-face focus groups and an online survey. Results: Students’ perceptions of healthy and sustainable dietary behaviours largely focused on the health aspects of food and consideration of food waste. The main factors that adolescents identified as influencing the health and sustainability of their diet were a lack of perceived responsibility for the impact of their meal choices and lack of knowledge of what constitutes a healthy and sustainable diet. Most students were unfamiliar with the term ‘pulses’ and lacked a desire to consume pulses more often. Consumption of pulses was below recommendations in national and international dietary guidelines. The main factors that adolescents identified as influencing pulse consumption related to students’ lack of capability to prepare pulses and the limited opportunities to access pulse-based foods. Conclusions: Perceptions of sustainable diets and pulses were very limited, and a lack of knowledge, skills, and limited availability were identified as barriers to their consumption. Education and cooking classes, in conjunction with increased availability of tasty pulse foods, are recommended to increase students’ pulse consumption as part of a healthy and sustainable diet. Background/Objectives: Neurological diseases are a major cause of long-term disability and dependence. In Poland, as in many countries, informal caregivers provide most long-term care for individuals with chronic and progressive neurological conditions. Although essential, this role is associated with substantial physical, psychological, and social burden. This study aimed to assess the scope and nature of support provided by caregivers to people with neurological diseases and to identify factors associated with differences in support and caregiver burden. Methods: A cross-sectional quantitative study was conducted using a CAWI survey. The sample included 104 informal caregivers of adults with various neurological conditions. An author-designed questionnaire and the “Actually Provided Support” subscale of the Berlin Social Support Scales (BSSS) were used. Nonparametric statistical tests were applied (p < 0.05). Results: Caregivers provided a high level of support, particularly emotional and instrumental support, while informational support was less intensive. Women more frequently reported high emotional and instrumental support. Higher buffering–protective support was more common among caregivers aged over 45 years. The most frequently reported difficulties were psychological fatigue (70.9%) and physical fatigue (60.2%), indicating a substantial caregiving burden. Key barriers included limited access to reimbursed healthcare services and the lack of temporary replacement in caregiving. Caregivers most often indicated the need for respite care and better access to information and education. Conclusions: Informal caregivers play a crucial role in the daily functioning of people with neurological diseases, despite high burden and insufficient systemic support. Expanding respite care, improving access to information, and better coordination of healthcare services are urgently needed. Full article

Background: Health education is a vital component of preventative care; however, rural Filipino adults often face structural, linguistic, and access barriers to obtaining reliable health information. Designing equitable and culturally relevant health education programs requires understanding which sources are most significant and how context affects them. Objective: To identify preferred sources of health education among adults in rural Philippine communities and investigate the contextual factors that influence these preferences. Methods: A cross-sectional mixed-methods study included 1203 adults from disadvantaged Luzon and Visayas barangays. Participants completed a self-administered survey on the importance of neighborhood health fairs, native-language instructional tools, and social media. Descriptive statistics (mean ± standard deviation) were used to aggregate importance ratings, and exploratory comparisons were made using paired and independent-samples t-tests. A subsample of 60 semi-structured interviews was analyzed using thematic analysis to interpret qualitative data. Results: Community health fairs were identified as the primary source of health education, with a mean rating of 8.5 ± 1.6, followed by native-language educational materials, which received a mean rating of 5.5 ± 2.4. In contrast, social media was rated the lowest, with a mean of 3.5 ± 2.3. Preference patterns were consistent across regions and sociodemographic groups, with only slight variation in rating magnitudes. Qualitative analysis revealed four themes influencing source preferences: accessibility and proximity, cultural and linguistic relevance, confidence in local health providers, and structural obstacles to digital access. Conclusions: In rural Philippine communities, intimacy, confidence, and cultural congruence influence health education preferences more than online platforms do. Strengthening community-based, locally integrated health education strategies may enhance the reach and contextual relevance of preventive health communication in underserved settings. Full article
