To investigate the modulation effects of high temperature and molecular sieve acidity on olefin cracking pathways and product selectivity, the catalytic cracking performance of 1-pentene was systematically studied under catalytic cracking temperatures of 700, 750 and 800 °C over H-ZSM-5 molecular sieves with silica-alumina molar ratios (SAR) of 23, 42 and 95. The contributions of catalytic cracking and thermal cracking were quantified, and the synergistic effects of temperature and SAR on monomolecular cracking, bimolecular cracking, confined catalytic radical (CCR) reaction and side reactions were analyzed by composition of the cracking products. Results showed that catalytic cracking dominated the cracking of 1-pentene over H-ZSM-5 in 700–800 °C. Higher temperature promoted monomolecular cracking and CCR, thus significantly increasing ethylene selectivity. Lower SAR enhanced acidity and catalytic cracking activity but intensified aromatization and C5+ formation. HZ-95 with weak acidity favored bimolecular cracking and exhibited low ethylene selectivity. HZ-42 achieved the optimal performance at 800 °C, with 1-pentene conversion of 98.80% and ethylene molar selectivity of 82.41%; both hydrogen transfer reactions and methane formation were effectively suppressed. This work provides mechanistic insights and theoretical support for the targeted catalytic cracking to olefins (TCO) process. Full article

The development of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is a crucial pathway to achieving carbon neutrality goals in the aviation industry. In the preparation process of SAF, the performance of catalysts is a core factor determining reaction efficiency, product distribution, and selectivity. Among these, zeolite molecular sieves play an irreplaceable key role in catalytic systems. This paper, through an in-depth survey and systematic analysis of over 70 core literature pieces in related fields, primarily elucidates the structural regulation mechanisms of zeolite catalysts in key reaction steps such as deoxygenation, hydrocracking, and isomerization. Research indicates that differences in pore size, pore channel configuration, and acidity distribution of zeolite molecular sieves with different topological structures (one-dimensional channels such as SAPO-11 and ZSM-22; three-dimensional intersecting channel micropores such as ZSM-5; three-dimensional twelve-membered ring micropores such as Y-type and Beta zeolites) directly affect the selectivity of catalytic reactions and product quality. The formation of unstable solid electrolyte interphases (SEIs) on the surface of lithium metal anodes poses a significant barrier to the commercialization of lithium metal batteries (LMBs). Rational modulation of solvation structures within the electrolytes emerged as one of the most effective strategies to enhance interfacial stability in LMBs; however, this approach often compromises the structural stability of the bulk electrolyte. Herein, we present an innovative method that improves interface stability without adversely affecting the bulk electrolyte’s structural stability. By employing ZSM molecular sieves as efficient ion channels on the lithium metal anode surface—termed ZSM electrolytes—a more aggregated solvation structure is induced at the lithium metal interface, resulting in an anion-rich interphase. This anion-enriched environment promotes the formation of an SEI derived from anions, thereby enhancing the stability of the lithium metal interface. Consequently, Li||Cu cells utilizing the ZSM electrolyte achieve an average coulombic efficiency (CE) of 98.76% over 700 h. Moreover, LiFePO4||Li batteries exhibit stable cycling performance exceeding 900 cycles at a current density of 1 C. This design strategy offers robust support for effective interfacial regulation in lithium metal batteries. Full article

To address the issue of volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions during crude oil storage and transportation, this study proposes a sandwich-structured zeolite molecular sieve (SMZ) fabricated via a pressing-sintering process integrating ZSM-5 powder and granules. The resulting monolithic zeolite exhibits enhanced mechanical strength and optimized pore architecture. Systematic investigations revealed that sintering at 600 °C with 10% carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) yielded SMZ with a specific surface area of 349.51 m2/g and pore volume of 0.37 cm3/g. Its hierarchical pore system—micropores (0.495 nm) coupled with mesopores (2–10 nm)—significantly improved adsorption kinetics. Dynamic adsorption tests demonstrated superior performance: SMZ achieved saturation capacities of 127.6 mg/g for propane and 118.2 mg/g for n-butane in liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), with a breakthrough time of 41 min and a 106% increase in adsorption capacity compared to conventional monolithic zeolite (MZ) (90.2 mg/g vs. 43.8 mg/g). Regeneration studies confirmed that combined thermal desorption (250 °C) and nitrogen purging maintained > 95% capacity retention over five cycles, attributed to the high thermal stability of the MFI topology framework (≤600 °C) and crack-resistant ceramic-like interfaces. Additionally, SMZ exhibited exceptional hydrophobicity, with a selectivity coefficient of 20.9 for propane under 60% relative humidity. This work provides theoretical and technical foundations for developing efficient and durable adsorbents for industrial VOC mitigation. Full article

Methane and carbon dioxide, the primary contributors to global warming, are now at critical levels, threatening the extinction of numerous organisms on our planet. In this regard, dry reforming of methane reactions have gained considerable attention because of the conversion capacity of CH4 and CO2 into synthetic/energy-important syngas (H2 and CO). Herein, a molecular sieve (CBV3024E; SiO2/Al2O3 = 30) with ZSM-8-type pore architect, is utilized as the support for the active site of Ni and Ce promoters. Catalysts are characterized by surface area and porosity, X-ray diffraction study, Raman and infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetry analysis, and temperature-programmed reduction/desorption techniques. A total of 2 wt.% ceria is added over 5Ni/CBV3024E to induce the optimum connectivity of aluminum in the silicate framework. NiO residing in these porous cages are mostly under “prominent interaction with support” which is reduced easily into metallic Ni as the active sites for DRM reactions. The active sites over 5Ni2Ce/CBV3024E remain stable during the DRM reaction and achieve ~58% H2 yield after 300 min TOS at 42,000 mL/(gcat.h) GHSV and ~70% H2 yield after 20 h at 26,000 mL/(gcat.h) GHSV. The high activity after a longer time stream justifies using CBV3024E molecular sieves as the support and ceria as the promoter for Ni-based catalyst towards the DRM reaction. Full article

As a toxic Volatile Organic Pollutant (TVOC), formaldehyde has a toxic effect on microorganisms, consequently inhibiting the biochemical process of formaldehyde wastewater treatment. Therefore, the selective degradation of formaldehyde is of great significance in achieving high-efficiency and low-cost formaldehyde wastewater treatment. This study constructed a heterogeneous Fe-ZSM-5/H2O2 Fenton system f or the selective degradation of target compounds. By immobilizing Fe3+ onto the surface of a ZSM-5 molecular sieve, Fe-ZSM-5 was prepared successfully. XRD, BET and FT-IR spectral studies showed that Fe-ZSM-5 was mainly composed of micropores. The influences of different variables on formaldehyde-selective heterogeneous Fenton degradation performance were studied. The 93.7% formaldehyde degradation and 98.2% selectivity of formaldehyde compared with glucose were demonstrated in the optimized Fenton system after 360 min. Notably, the resultant selective Fenton oxidation system had a wide range of pH suitability, from 3.0 to 10.0. Also, the Fe-ZSM-5 was used in five consecutive cycles without a significant drop in formaldehyde degradation efficiency. The use of reactive oxygen species scavengers indicated that the hydroxyl radical was the primary active species responsible for degrading formaldehyde. Furthermore, great degradation performance was acquired with high concentrations of formaldehyde for this system, and the degradation efficiency was more than 95.0%. Full article

Utilizing carbon dioxide as a carbon source for the synthesis of olefins and aromatics has emerged as one of the most practical methods for CO2 reduction. In this study, an improved selectivity of 85% for targeting products (ethylbenzene and propylbenzene) is achieved with a benzene conversion of 16.8% by coupling the hydrogenation of carbon dioxide to olefins over the bifunctional catalyst “Oxide-Zeolite” (OX-ZEO) and the alkylation of benzene with olefins over ZSM-5. In addition to investigating the influence of SAPO-34 and ZSM-5 zeolite acidity on product distribution, catalyst deactivation due to coke formation is addressed by modifying both molecular sieves to be hierarchical to extend the catalyst lifespan. Even after 100 h of operation at 400 °C, the catalysts maintained over 80% selectivity towards the target products, with benzene conversion over 14.2%. Furthermore, the pathway of propylbenzene formation is demonstrated through simple experimental design, revealing that the surface Brønsted acid sites of SAPO-34 serve as its primary formation sites. This provides a novel perspective for further investigation of the reaction network. Full article

An advanced strategy was developed for the synthesis of molecular sieve-supported Pd catalysts. In this method, reductant containing C=C was in-situ prepared and pre-dispersed in the pore of the zeolites. The C=C group in the reductant can reduce the Pd2+ to Pd0 efficiently, leading to the formation of small and uniform Pd nanoparticles (~2 nm). The physical and chemical properties of the catalyst were characterized by XRD, TEM, XPS (ICP-OES), N2 isothermal adsorption-desorption, and H2-TPR. These catalysts showed high catalytic performance for the hydrogenation of nitrobenzene to aniline. All the TOFs for 1.5 Pd/Y, 1.5 Pd/ZSM-5, and 1.5 Pd/MOR with 1.5 wt% Pd loading are higher than 1000 h−1 at 30 °C and 0.1 MPa H2. Meanwhile, kinetic analysis for 2.0 Pd/Y was carried out, and an apparent activation energy of 28.88 kJ mol−1 was obtained, which is lower than most of the reported values in the literature. Furthermore, these catalysts were stable and recyclable. Full article

The hydrophobic nature of inorganic zeolite particles plays a crucial role in the efficacy of mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) for the separation of trichloroethylene (TCE) through pervaporation. This study presents a novel approach to further augment the hydrophobicity of ZSM-5. The ZSM-5 zeolite molecular sieve was subjected to modification using three different silane coupling agents, namely, n-octyltriethoxysilane (OTES), γ-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (KH-570), and γ-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (KH-550). The water contact angles of the resulting OTES@ZSM-5, KH-570@ZSM-5, and KH-550@ZSM-5 particles exhibited significant increases from 97.2° to 112.8°, 109.1°, and 102.7°, respectively, thereby indicating a notable enhancement in hydrophobicity. Subsequently, mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) were fabricated by incorporating the aforementioned silane-modified ZSM-5 particles into polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), leading to a considerable improvement in the adsorption selectivity of these membranes towards trichloroethylene (TCE). The findings indicate that the PDMS membrane with a 20 wt.% OTES@ZSM-5 particle loading exhibits superior pervaporation performance. When subjected to a temperature of 30 °C, flow rate of 100 mL/min, and vacuum of 30 Kpa, the separation factor and total flux of a 3 × 10−7 wt.% TCE solution reach 328 and 155 gm−2·h−1, respectively. In comparison to the unmodified ZSM-5/PDMS membrane, the separation factor demonstrates a 41% increase, while the TCE flux experiences a 6% increase. Consequently, this approach effectively enhances the pervaporation separation capabilities of the PDMS membrane for TCE. Full article

The conceptual design and engineering of an integrated catalytic reactor requires a thorough understanding of the prevailing mechanisms and phenomena to ensure a safe operation while achieving desirable efficiency and product yields. The necessity and importance of these requirements are demonstrated in this investigation in the case of novel membrane-assisted reactors tailored for CO2 hydrogenation. Firstly, a carbon molecular sieve membrane was developed for simultaneous separation of CO2 from a hot post-combustion CO2-rich stream, followed by directing it along a packed-bed of hybrid CuO-ZnO/ZSM5 catalysts to react with hydrogen and produce DiMethyl Ether (DME). The generated water is removed from the catalytic bed by permeation through the membrane which enables reaction equilibrium shift towards more CO2-conversion. Extra process intensification was achieved using a membrane-assisted reactive distillation reactor, where similarly several such parallel membranes were erected inside a catalytic bed to form a reactive-distillation column. This provides the opportunity for a synchronized separation of CO2 and water by a membrane, mixing the educts (i.e., hydrogen and CO2) and controlling the reaction along the catalytic bed while distilling the products (i.e., methanol, water and DME) through the catalyst loaded column. The hybrid catalyst and carbon molecular sieve membrane were developed using the synthesis methods and proved experimentally to be among the most efficient compared to the state-of-the-art. In this context, selective permeation of the membrane and selective catalytic conversion of hybrid catalysts under the targeted operating temperature range of 200–260 °C and 10–20 bar pressure were studied. For the membrane, the obtained high flux of selective CO2-permeation was beyond the Robeson upper bound. Moreover, in the hybrid catalytic structure, a combined methanol and DME yield of 15% was secured. Detailed results of catalyst and membrane synthesis and characterization along with catalyst test and membrane permeation tests are reported in this paper. The performance of various configurations of integrated catalytic and separation systems was studied through an experimentally supported simulation along with the systematic analysis of the conceptual design and operation of such reactive distillation. Focusing on the subnano-/micro-meter scale, the performance of sequential reactions while considering the interaction of the involved catalytic materials on the overall performance of the hybrid catalyst structure was studied. On the same scale, the mechanism of separation through membrane pores was analyzed. Moreover, looking at the micro-/milli-meter scale in the vicinity of the catalyst and membrane, the impacts of equilibrium shift and the in-situ separation of CO2 and steam were analyzed, respectively. Finally, at the macro-scale separation of components, the impacts of established temperature, pressure and concentration profiles along the reactive distillation column were analyzed. The desired characteristics of the integrated membrane reactor at different scales could be identified in this manner. Full article

Spiramycin (SPM), a widely employed antibiotic in both clinical therapy and the livestock industry, poses significant challenges in terms of safe and efficacious management. A heterogeneous photo-Fenton system, devised using Schwertmannite (Sch), can effectively degrade contaminants. However, it is accompanied by a relatively low conversion efficiency of ≡Fe3+/≡Fe2+ and a significant iron loss. In this study, a catalyst featuring Fe3O4 and ZSM-5 molecular sieve-modified Sch (Fe3O4/ZSM-5/Sch) was devised to enhance the catalytic activity and stability. The findings revealed that Fe3O4/ZSM-5/Sch exhibited exceptional catalytic activity, with the reaction first-order kinetic exceeding that of pure Sch. The active species including ·OH, h+, e, ·O2 and SO4· were identified in the UV/Fe3O4/ZSM-5/Sch-H2O2 system. The enhanced catalytic activity of Fe3O4/ZSM-5/Sch could be ascribed to the effective conversion of ≡Fe3+/≡Fe2+. The photogenerated electrons within Fe3O4 were transported to Sch via ZSM-5, which effectually reduced ≡Fe3+/≡Fe2. Moreover, Fe3O4/ZSM-5/Sch demonstrated outstanding stability; even after six cycles, the degradation efficiency of SPM remained above 86.50%, and the leaching quantity of Fe remained below 0.24 mg/L. This research not only develops an excellent catalyst for the safe treatment of SPM but also proffers innovative perspectives for the future design of efficient iron-based catalysts. Full article

The traditional preparation of ZSM-5 molecular sieves relies on chemical reagents to provide silicon and aluminum sources, which are limited as raw materials and cannot be commonly used in production practice. Using coal gangue as the raw material and using medium-temperature chlorination roasting and the pressure acid leaching process to control the silicon–aluminum ratio [n(Si/Al)] of coal gangue, a ZSM-5 molecular sieve was prepared using the alkali melting hydrothermal method. The pressure acid leaching process solved the limitation that kaolinite and mica cannot simultaneously be activated. Under optimal conditions, the n(Si/Al) of the coal gangue increased from 6.23 to 26.14 and complied with the requirements for the synthesis n(Si/Al) of a ZSM-5 molecular sieve. The effect of n(Si/Al) on the preparation of the ZSM-5 molecular sieve was studied. Finally, spherical granular ZSM-5 molecular sieve material with a microporous specific surface area of 169.6329 m2/g, an average pore diameter of 0.6285 nm, and a pore volume of 0.0988 cm3/g was prepared. Providing ideas for the high-value utilization of coal gangue, it is significant for solving the problem of coal gangue solid waste, as well as the problem of ZSM-5 molecular sieve feed stock. In this study, a ZSM−5/CLCA molecular sieve was prepared by the hydrothermal method using coal gangue as the raw material and cellulose aerogel (CLCA) as the green templating agent, which not only reduces the cost of traditional molecular preparation but also improves the comprehensive resource utilization rate of coal gangue. Through a series of characterization methods (XRD, SEM, FT-IR, TEM, TG, and BET), the crystal form, morphology, and specific surface area of the prepared sample were tested and analyzed. The performance of the adsorption process of malachite green (MG) solution was analyzed by adsorption kinetics and adsorption isotherm. The results show that the synthesized zeolite molecular sieve and the commercial zeolite molecular sieve are highly consistent. At a crystallization time of 16 h, a crystallization temperature of 180 °C, and an additive amount of cellulose aerogel of 0.6 g, the adsorption capacity of ZSM−5/CLCA for MG was up to 136.5 mg/g, much higher than that of commercially available ZSM−5. This provides an idea for the green preparation of gangue-based zeolite molecular sieves to remove organic pollutants from water. Moreover, the process of adsorbing MG on the multistage porous molecular sieve, which is spontaneous, conforms to the pseudo-second-order kinetic equation and Langmuir isothermal adsorption model. N2O is a greenhouse gas and a candidate oxidant. Volatile organic pollutants (VOCs) have caused great harm to the atmospheric ecological environment. Developing the technique utilizing N2O as the oxidant to oxidize VOCs to realize the collaborative purification has significant importance and practical value for N2O emission control and VOC abatement. Therefore, the study of N2O catalytic oxidation of tert-butanol based on zeolite catalysts was carried out. A series of molecular sieves, including FER, MOR, ZSM-5, Y, and BEA, were selected as the catalyst objects, and the 1.5% wt Fe and Co were, respectively, loaded on the zeolite catalysts via the impregnation method. It was found that the catalytic performance of BEA was the best among the molecular sieves. Comparing the catalytic performance of Fe-BEA under different load gradients (0.25~2%), it was found that 1.5% Fe-BEA possessed the best catalytic activity. A series of characterization methods showed that Fe3+ content in 1.5% Fe-BEA was the highest, and more active sites formed to promote the catalytic reaction. The α-O in the reaction eventually oxidized tert-butanol to CO2 over the active site. The Co mainly existed in the form of Co2+ cations over Co-BEA samples; the 2% Co-BEA possessing higher amounts of Co2+ exhibited the highest activity among the prepared Co-BEA samples. Full article

In this research, catalytic cracking of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) has been carried out in the presence of three kinds of typical molecular sieves, including ZSM-5, HY and MCM-41, respectively. The effects of different catalysts on the composition and quantity of pyrolysis products consisting of gas, oil and solid material were systematically investigated and summarized. Specially, the three kinds of catalysts were added into LDPE for pyrolysis to obtain regulatable oil and gas products (H2, CH4 and a mixture of C2–C4+ gaseous hydrocarbons). These catalysts were characterized with BET, NH3-TPD, SEM and TEM. The results show that the addition of MCM-41 improved the oil yield, indicating that the secondary cracking of intermediate species in primary pyrolysis decreased with the case of the catalyst. The highest selectivity of MCM-41 to liquid oil (78.4% at 650 °C) may be attributed to its moderate total acidity and relatively high BET surface area. The ZSM-5 and HY were found to produce a great amount of gas products (61.4% and 67.1% at 650 °C). In particular, the aromatic yield of oil production reached the maximum (65.9% at 500 °C) when the ZSM-5 was used. Accordingly, with the three kinds of catalysts, a new environment-friendly and efficient recovery approach may be developed to obtain regulatable and valuable products by pyrolysis of LDPE-type plastic wastes.
