This study aimed to determine the impact of natural fermentation time on the chemical composition and antioxidant activities of cassava flour. Samples of flour were fermented for intervals of 12, 24, and 48 h and compared with the control (0 h). The results indicated clear differences in the chemical composition of these samples. The pH value was reduced, TTA increased, and TSS decreased. This is due to the action of lactic acid bacteria during fermentation. The TPC value also increased with fermentation time, achieving 2.95 mg GAE/g after 48 h, compared to 1.35 mg GAE/g initially. Antioxidant activities improved significantly; total antioxidant capacity surged from 23.50 µmol TE/g to 69.81 µmol TE/g over the 48 h fermentation period, based on ABTS, DPPH, and FRAP assays. Protein content also improved significantly, increasing from 1.82% to 3.10%, while the hydrogen cyanide content declined from 25.14 mg/100 g to 5.34 mg/100 g, signifying reduced nutritional risk. An increase in minerals was also noted, with calcium showing the highest concentration of 41.35 mg/100 g after 48 h of fermentation. These findings demonstrate the effectiveness of fermenting cassava flour by enhancing its chemical composition and antioxidant properties while lowering antinutrients, which improves its value in functional foods. This study applies Gradient Boosting Machines (GBMs) and principal component regression (PCR) to forecast the closing price of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) All-Share Index (ALSI), using daily data from 2009 to 2024, sourced from the Wall Street Journal. The models are evaluated under three training–testing split ratios to assess short-term forecasting performance. Forecast accuracy is assessed using standard error metrics: mean absolute error (MAE), root mean square error (RMSE), mean absolute percentage error (MAPE), and mean absolute scaled error (MASE). Across all test splits, the GBM consistently achieves lower forecast errors than PCR, demonstrating superior predictive accuracy. To validate the significance of this performance difference, the Diebold–Mariano (DM) test is applied, confirming that the forecast errors from the GBM are statistically significantly lower than those of PCR at conventional significance levels. These findings highlight the GBM’s strength in capturing nonlinear relationships and complex interactions in financial time series, particularly when using features such as the USD/ZAR exchange rate, oil, platinum, and gold prices, the S&P 500 index, and calendar-based variables like month and day. Future research should consider integrating additional macroeconomic indicators and exploring alternative or hybrid forecasting models to improve robustness and generalisability across different market conditions. Bambara groundnut (Vigna subterranean) is an important legume grain in sub-Saharan Africa, including South Africa. Nevertheless, the peculiarity of being hard to cook and mill and the availability of antinutritional factors often limit Bambara groundnut (BGN) use in food applications. This study investigated the impact of dehulling and malting on the nutritional composition, antinutritional factors, and protein digestibility of flours obtained from three BGN varieties (red, cream, and brown). Dehulling and malting significantly enhanced the moisture and protein content of BGN flours (dry basis), with values varying from 6.01% (control brown variety) to 8.71% (malted cream and brown varieties), and from 18.63% (control red variety) to 21.87% (dehulled brown), respectively. Dehulling increased the fat content from 5.82% (control red variety) to 7.84% (dehulled cream), whereas malting decreased the fat content. Nevertheless, malting significantly increased (p < 0.05) the fiber content from 4.78% (control cream) to 8.28% (malted brown variety), while dehulling decreased the fiber content. Both processing methods decreased the ash and carbohydrate contents of the BGN flours. Dehulling and malting significantly enhanced the amino acids of BGN flours, except for tryptophan and asparagine. Dehulling and malting notably increased the phosphorus, magnesium, potassium, and sulfur contents of the BGN flours, while calcium and zinc were reduced. Malting significantly enhanced the iron content of BGN flour, whereas dehulling reduced it. Both processing methods significantly enhanced palmitic, arachidic, and y-Linolenic acids. Nonetheless, processing methods significantly reduced phytic acid and oxalate, and dehulling achieved the most significant reductions. Dehulling and malting significantly enhanced the protein digestibility of the BGN flours from 69.38 (control red variety) to 83.29 g/100 g (dehulled cream variety). Overall, dehulling and malting enhanced the nutritional quality and decreased the antinutritional factors of BGN flours. Full article

In April 2018, South Africa became the first African country to implement a Health Promotion Levy (HPL) on sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs). This study assessed sugar tax awareness among rural-based university students and involved 342 participants, with an additional 10% to account for attrition. However, only 257 students, randomly selected from six university residences at the University of Venda, reported consuming SSBs. Systematic sampling determined the room selection, and the data was collected through an interviewer-administered questionnaire (8–28 October 2022). A knowledge questionnaire assessed the students’ understanding of the sugar tax. The results showed that 65.8% purchased SSBs five to six times a week, while 41.2% spent over R200 monthly on these beverages. The results showed that students had limited awareness and little perception of the sugar tax, reflecting a broader knowledge gap. Their negative behaviors toward sugar-sweetened beverages indicated that changing their consumption patterns would be challenging. Raising public awareness through taxation is widely recognized as an effective obesity prevention strategy, but misinformation, negative perceptions, and pessimistic attitudes may contribute to continued high consumption. Rivers are recognized as significant pathways and transportation for microplastics (MPs), an emerging contaminant, to aquatic environments. However, there is limited evidence on how riverine reservoirs influence MPs transport. To fill this gap and provide baseline empirical data and insights to South African context, the current study assessed the seasonal variation in MP densities from sediments collected upstream, within the reservoir, and downstream of the Vondo Reservoir along the Mutshindudi River. We hypothesised that MP densities would be highest within the reservoir, due to the lack of constant flow that would otherwise transport accumulated particles downriver. Additionally, we expected the cool–dry season to be associated with the highest MP densities. As expected, high MP densities were observed within the reservoir (117.38–277.46 particles kg−1 dwt) when compared to the downstream (72.63–141.50 particles kg−1 dwt) and upstream (28.81–91.63 particles kg−1 dwt) sites of the reservoir. The cool–dry season (91.63–277.46 particles kg−1 dwt) exhibited the highest MP densities compared to the hot–wet season (28.81–141.50 particles kg−1 dwt). However, MP densities downstream the reservoir were higher during the hot–wet season (141.50 ± 24.34 particles kg−1 dwt) compared to the cool–dry season (72.63 ± 48.85 particles kg−1 dwt). The most dominant MP particles identified were white, transparent, and black fibres/filaments composed primarily of polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE). This suggests diverse sources of MP particles. No significant correlations were found between water parameters and MP densities across sampling sites and seasons, indicating a widespread and context-independent presence of MPs. These findings contribute to MP studies in freshwater environments and further reinforce the role of sediments as sink for MPs and suggest that riverine reservoirs similar to dams can trap MPs, which may then be remobilized downstream during high-flow periods. Importantly, the results of this study can support local municipalities in implementing targeted plastic pollution mitigation strategies and public awareness campaigns, particularly because the Vondo Reservoir serves as a critical water resource for surrounding communities. Background: Unlike other chronic diseases, cancer patients undergo different types of treatments that affect their well-being, and as a result, they tend to have different experiences from those of other chronic disease sufferers. The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of cancer diagnosis and coping strategies on patients in Vhembe District hospitals in Limpopo Province. Methodology: The study design used was a quantitative descriptive cross-sectional survey. The target population included patients in the Vhembe District of Limpopo who had started treatment within the last year. Probability-stratified sampling was used to sample 207 patients from seven selected hospitals in Vhembe District. A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data, and the data were analyzed using a software package for descriptive statistics (SPSS version 23). Tables were used to display the results visually, and chi-square tests were used to compare the variables. Ethical principles were considered for the participants’ privacy, anonymity, and informed consent. Findings: The findings revealed that the majority of patients 185 (89.4%) experienced a sense of psychosocial distress such as emotional pain; 142 (68.6%) participants experienced hopelessness and despair, 127 (61.3%) resorted to substance use, 160 (77.3%) did not have a positive attitude towards seeking the medical and other support resources available, only a minority resorted to spirituality, and 121 (63.2%) indicated seeking further clarity about the disease. The study recommends supporting cancer patients and their families through the cancer journey. Contributions: Clinicians should provide psychosocial support interventions to enhance mental health and quality of life in cancer patients, and decentralize oncology services by including primary care professionals in delivering chronic illness disease management strategies. Soil organic matter (SOM) content is a key indicator for assessing soil health, carbon cycling, and soil degradation. Traditional SOM detection methods are complex and time-consuming and do not meet the modern agricultural demand for rapid, non-destructive analysis. While significant progress has been made in spectral inversion for SOM prediction, its accuracy still lags behind traditional chemical methods. This study proposes a novel approach to predict SOM content by integrating spectral, texture, and color features using a three-branch convolutional neural network (3B-CNN). Spectral reflectance data (400–1000 nm) were collected using a portable hyperspectral imaging device. The top 15 spectral bands with the highest correlation were selected from 260 spectral bands using the Correlation Coefficient Method (CCM), Boruta algorithm, and Successive Projections Algorithm (SPA). Compared to other methods, CCM demonstrated superior dimensionality reduction performance, retaining bands highly correlated with SOM, which laid a solid foundation for multi-source data fusion. Additionally, six soil texture features were extracted from soil images taken with a smartphone using the gray-level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM), and twelve color features were obtained through the color histogram. These multi-source features were fused via trilinear pooling. The results showed that the 3B-CNN model, integrating multi-source data, performed exceptionally well in SOM prediction, with an R2 of 0.87 and an RMSE of 1.68, a 23% improvement in R2 compared to the 1D-CNN model using only spectral data. Incorporating multi-source data into traditional machine learning models (SVM, RF, and PLS) also improved prediction accuracy, with R2 improvements ranging from 4% to 11%. This study demonstrates the potential of multi-source data fusion in accurately predicting SOM content, enabling rapid assessment at the field scale and providing a scientific basis for precision fertilization and agricultural management. This study evaluated the effects of a plant pathogenic bacterium Pectobacterium carotovorum strain BD163 inoculation and nutrient solution (CaCO3 (2 mM), NaCl (1 mM) and K2Cr2O7 (0.001 mM)) on the growth, photosynthesis, nutrient uptake and metabolomics of tomato seedlings. The experiment had four experimental treatments (1. solution + BD163 inoculation, 2. solution alone, 3. BD163 inoculation, 4. control). Plant growth and photosynthesis responses were minimal, and differences in nutrient assimilation and metabolite profiles were clear-cut. Of the photosynthesis parameters, only water use efficiency was impacted; it was higher in the bacterium-only treatment and unchanged in the other treatments. The quantities of boron, bismuth and nickel were affected, accumulating mostly in the “solution + BD163 inoculation” experimental set. Principal component analysis of metabolomics data separated the treatments into three groupings; group 1 was the double treatment, group 2 was the nutrient solution treatment and, finally, group 3 was the P. carotovorum and control treatments. Correlation analysis of the data showed an assumed interdependence of several plant factors. The authors concluded that the interaction between the bacterium, the plant and the nutrient solution is complex and more pronounced at the chemical and metabolite level than at the growth and photosynthesis level. Obesity among adolescents has increased over the past decades in most parts of the world in low- and middle-income countries. This study aimed to investigate the dietary practices and anthropometric status of the rural university students in Limpopo Province. A cross-sectional study was conducted among university students in Limpopo Province. A total of 363 students aged 18 to 42 years residing at the university residences were randomly selected. A structured self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data. Anthropometric measurements were conducted by a qualified biokinetist. Data were analysed using SPSS version 29. More than half (57.3%) of the students were females. About 42.1% reported that they consume fast food once per week. The prevalences of overweight and obesity were 21.8% and 7.5%, respectively. A chi-square analysis revealed a significant association between soft drinks, juice, and energised drink consumption frequency and BMI status (p = 0.006). Results revealed a significant association between the frequency of eating processed food per week and the WHR status (p = 0.013). Overweight and consuming fast food and sugary drinks are significant concerns amongst rural-based university students. The current study recommends that regular nutrition education campaigns be conducted at the university to encourage students to make healthier eating choices. Full article

The government, business, and higher education sectors benefit from internationalisation. This viewpoint is articulated considering the improved academic quality and international recognition derived from faculty/student exchange programs and research partnerships, which elevate academic standards and the institution’s profile internationally. This systematic review is intended to (i) highlight the prevalence of current publications and other research-related activities that are steered towards the innovation of internationalisation in Higher Education Sector (HES), (ii) analyse and organise data on the impact of internationalisation effectiveness in the HES, and (iii) conclude with future characteristics of internationalisation effectiveness with suggestions to government, decision-makers, and institutions to achieve sustainable education sector. A search strategy was initiated through various research databases within the years 2005–2024. Of the 3865 identified papers from the database search, 3558 were excluded, and 307 were selected, of which 32 publications were utilised in the review process. The study identified several themes: transformation, factors, global nationality, international mobility, impact, curriculum and strategic framework. The study highlights the need to decolonise the HES for internationalisation effectiveness. This study also highlights future empirical research on the innovative effects of internationalisation for economic development. Full article

Native to South Africa, Bush tea is a plant that thrives in various climates. Cultural practices such as mineral nutrition, fertigation, pruning, and harvesting have been shown to influence bush tea’s quality, growth, and yield. This study set out to determine the effects of mulching and deficit irrigation on the growth, yield, and quality of bush tea. Three deficit irrigation treatments (0%, 30%, and 100% Crop evapotranspiration (ETc) on field capacity) and three mulch treatments (sawdust, black plastic mulch, and no mulch) were included in a two-factor experiment, which was set up in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. Physiological and growth parameters were taken every two weeks. The number of branches was counted, and measurements of chlorophyll content and the proportion of radiation intercepted by the canopy were recorded. Yield and secondary metabolites such as sugar residuals, fatty acids, and phenols of bush tea were determined after harvest. Growing bush tea under various water regimes showed that a 30% water regime significantly enhanced plant growth characteristics, including the proportion of intercepted radiation, plant height, and both fresh and dry weight. Furthermore, under different water regimes, sawdust improved plant growth in bush tea grown in the field. Black plastic mulch and a 0% water regime produced more compounds beneficial to health than tea treated with half or full irrigation. The extraction of data for Proton Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and Mass Spectrometry analyses was conducted for quality components. Our study did not show any distinct structural differences in the tea under different water regimes or mulching. Flavones, phenols, diterpenes, and gardoside were some of the most abundant compounds found in bush tea using mass spectrometry. Background: Participation in sports offers children with intellectual disabilities (IDs) crucial opportunities for development. However, they often face barriers to inclusion in school-based sports, especially in under-resourced areas. This study aimed to (1) assess the level of participation in school sports among learners with IDs, and (2) explore teachers’ perceptions of the benefits and barriers to such participation in special schools within the Vhembe District of South Africa. Methods: A qualitative, descriptive research design was employed. Face-to-face semi-structured interviews were conducted with 20 teachers from four special schools. Thematic analysis helped identify key themes and interpret responses. Results: All schools offered weekly sports activities, as required by the Department of Education. Teachers viewed sports as vital for social interaction, physical fitness, and psychological well-being. However, barriers such as insufficient adapted equipment, inadequate facilities, and limited family support hindered meaningful participation, particularly for learners with profound disabilities. Conclusions: School sports have the potential to transform the lives of learners with IDs, but systemic barriers restrict access. Increased investment in inclusive infrastructure, adaptive equipment, teacher training, and community awareness is essential to align policy with practice in special education. Full article

Background: Gender-based violence has serious health impacts on survivors and is perpetuated by cultural norms, patriarchy, and traditional values. This study explored women’s (survivors) views, attitudes and the impact of gender-based violence on their health in a selected rural village within the Collins Chabane Municipality, Vhembe District, Limpopo Province. Methods: A qualitative descriptive design was used, involving 20 women aged 18 to 59. Semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted, and data were analysed thematically using ATLAS.ti 8, based on Braun and Clarke’s six-step framework. Ethical considerations were prioritised due to the sensitive nature of the research. Results: The results revealed that women in the Collins Chabane Municipality experience multiple forms of GBV, including physical, sexual, emotional, and financial abuse, which severely impacts their mental and physical health. Additionally, socioeconomic factors like unemployment and financial dependence exacerbate their vulnerability, making it difficult to escape abusive relationships. Conclusions: Cultural norms, patriarchal beliefs, and limited community support intersect to shape women’s experiences and responses to abuse. Full article

Assessing the Physiochemical Parameters and Reduction Efficiency from Two Typical Wastewater Treatment Plants in the Vhembe District in South Africa

The primary sources of widespread pollution in most river catchments are improperly treated final effluents from various wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), affecting the physicochemical characteristics of the receiving water bodies. Wastewater discharge must be monitored regularly to ensure compliance with national and municipal water quality regulatory/standard restrictions. This study monitored the physicochemical parameters of two typical WWTPs (WWTP A = a peri-urban plant and WWTP B = a rural plant) for 5 months. The physicochemical parameters that were assessed included pH, temperature, total dissolved solids (TDSs), turbidity, chemical oxygen demand (COD), alkalinity, dissolved oxygen (DO), free chlorine, chloride, sulphate, phosphate, ammonium, and electrical conductivity (EC). The evaluation yielded the following results: temperature (14 to 21 °C and 14 to 23 °C), pH (7.2–8.2 and 7.3–8.4), EC (90–800 μs/cm and 80–750 μs/cm), TDSs (65–440 and 55–410 mg/L), alkalinity (2.6–20.9 mg/L), nitrate (0.24–26.5 mg/L), nitrite (0.01–90 mg/L), phosphate (0.0–18.0 mg/L and 0.0–21 mg/L), ammonia (0.2–75 mg/L and 0.8–70 mg/L), sulphate (0.0–18.0 mg/L and 0.0–21 mg/L), chloride (5.0–22.0 mg/L and 2.0–25 mg/L), COD (6.0–710 mg/L and 7.0–800 mg/L), and turbidity (0.4–150 NTU and 1.8–130 NTU) for wastewater treatment A and B, respectively. The results also showed that temperature, pH, TDSs, nitrite/nitrate, chloride, turbidity, alkalinity, sulphate, and free chlorine were among the parameters in the final effluent discharged that met the set guidelines. In contrast, parameters such as COD, EC, phosphate, and ammonia did not meet the guideline values for most of the sampling period for both WWTPs. Furthermore, this study found that WWTPs reduced nitrate, sulphate, phosphate, and COD pollutants by more than 90% while maintaining 60% alkalinity. Temperature, pH, TDSs, EC, Cl, and other parameters were less than 40% for WWTP A and roughly less than 50% for WWTP B. Full article

Bambara groundnut (Vigna subterranea (L.) Verdc.) is an underutilized leguminous crop, with its grains consumed differently, especially in developing countries. Bambara groundnut (BGN) is the cheapest source of protein and a rich source of dietary fiber, carbohydrates, amino acids, and minerals. It also contains a variety of non-nutritional components known as phytochemicals. The phytochemicals in BGN include polyphenols, flavonoids, tannins, phytic acid, oxalate, and trypsin inhibitors. Nevertheless, some phytochemicals are classified as antinutrients because they impair nutrient absorption. Bambara groundnut also contains metabolites, such as epicatechin, catechin, procyanidin, esters, and citric acid. Bioprocessing, such as dehulling, germination, malting, fermentation, ultrasonication, micronization, and others, reduces BGN flour’s antinutrients. However, bioprocessing may increase or decrease the levels of metabolites in BGN flour. For example, fermentation increases esters, whereas malting decreases them. Various studies have reported the use of BGN flour in bakery products, meat products, non-alcoholic beverages, pasta, and others. Thus, this study aimed to review the influence of bioprocessing on the nutritional quality, antinutrients, functional characteristics, and metabolites of BGN flour and its potential food applications. This study will explore the health benefits of bioprocessed BGN flour and promote its use in various food products. Full article
