The problem of protecting 7075 Al alloy trekking poles from corrosion in complex outdoor environments was addressed using a composite conversion coating system. This system comprised Na2MoO4, NaF, CoSO4·7H2O, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid-2Na, and H2(TiF6). The influences of this system on the properties of the coating layer were systematically studied by adjusting the pH of the coating solution. The conversion temperature and pH were the pivotal parameters influencing the formation of the conversion coating. The pH substantially influenced the compactness of the coating layer, acting as a regulatory agent of the coating kinetics. When the conversion temperature and pH were set to 40 °C and 3.8, respectively, the prepared coating layer displayed optimal performance in terms of compactness and protective properties. Therefore, this parameter combination favours the synthesis of high-performance conversion coatings. Microscopy confirmed the formation of a continuous, dense composite oxide film structure under these conditions, effectively blocking erosion in corrosive media. Furthermore, the optimised process led to substantial enhancements in the environmental adaptabilities and service lives of the components of trekking poles, thus establishing a theoretical foundation and technical reference for use in the surface protection of outdoor equipment. This study presents the structural and compositional characterisation of a newly developed Ti55Al27Mo13 alloy synthesised via aluminothermic reaction. The alloy was designed to overcome the limitations of conventional processing routes for high–melting–point elements such as Ti and Mo, enabling the formation of a complex, multi–phase microstructure in a single high–temperature step. The aim was to develop and characterise a material with microstructural features expected to enhance wear resistance, oxidation behaviour, and thermal stability in future applications. The alloy is intended as a precursor for composite nanopowders and surface coatings applied to aluminium–, magnesium–, and iron–based substrates subjected to mechanical and thermal loading. Elemental analysis (XRF, EDS) confirmed the presence of Ti, Al, Mo, and minor elements such as Si, Fe, and C. Microstructural investigations using laser confocal and scanning electron microscopy revealed a heterogeneous structure comprising solid solutions, eutectic regions, and dispersed oxide and carbide phases. Notably, the alloy exhibits high hardness values, reaching >2400 HV in Al2O3 regions and ~1300 HV in Mo– and Si–enriched solid solutions. These results suggest the material’s substantial potential for protective surface engineering. Further tribological, thermal, and corrosion testing, conducted with meticulous attention to detail, will follow to validate its functional performance in target applications. Full article

The study investigates the influence of microstructures on fatigue behavior and failure mechanisms of the α-β titanium alloy Ti6246, fabricated via Powder Bed Fusion-Laser Beam (PBF-LB). In particular, the investigation assesses the effect of two post-processing heat treatments, namely α-β annealing at 875 °C (AN875) and solution treatment at 825 °C followed by aging at 500 °C (STA825), on the alloy’s rotating and bending fatigue behavior. The results indicate that the STA825 condition provides superior fatigue resistance (+25%) compared to AN875, due to the presence of a finer bilamellar microstructure, characterized by thinner primary α lamellae (αp) and a more homogeneous distribution of secondary α lamellae (αs) within the β matrix. Additionally, an investigation conducted using the Kitagawa–Takahashi (KT) approach and the El-Haddad model, based on the relationship between the fatigue limit and defect sensitivity, revealed improved crack propagation resistance from pre-existing defects (ΔKth) for the STA825 condition compared to AN875. Notably, the presence of fine αs after aging for STA825 is effective in delaying crack nucleation and propagation at early stages, while refined αp contributes to hindering macrocrack growth. The fatigue behavior of the STA825-treated Ti6246 alloy was even superior to that of the PBF-LB-processed Ti64, representing a viable alternative for the production of high-performance components in the automotive and aerospace sectors. The advent of additive manufacturing (AM), also known as 3D printing, has revolutionized the production of titanium alloys, offering significant advantages in fabricating complex geometries with enhanced mechanical properties. This study investigates the variant-specific deformation mechanisms in HIP-treated TA15 (Ti-6.5Al-2Zr-1Mo-1V) titanium alloy, fabricated via selective electron beam melting (SEBM). The alloy exhibits a dual-phase (α+β) microstructure, where six distinct α variants are formed through the β→α phase transformation following the Burgers orientation relationship. Variant selection during AM leads to a non-uniform distribution of these α variants, with α6 (22.3%) dominating due to preferential growth. Analysis of the prismatic slip Schmid factor reveals that α4–α6 variants, with higher Schmid factors (>0.45), primarily undergo prismatic slip, while α1–α3 variants, with lower Schmid factors (<0.3), rely on basal or pyramidal slip and twinning for plastic deformation. In-grain misorientation axis (IGMA) analysis further reveals strain-dependent slip transitions: pyramidal slip is activated in α1–α3 variants at lower strains, while prismatic slip becomes the dominant deformation mechanism in α4–α6 variants at higher strains. Additionally, deformation twins, primarily {10–12}<1–101> extension twins (7.1%), contribute to the plasticity of hard-oriented α variants. These findings significantly enhance the understanding of the orientation-dependent deformation mechanisms in HIPed TA15 alloy and provide a crucial basis for optimizing the performance of additively-manufactured titanium alloys. The application fields of high-temperature titanium alloys are mainly concentrated in the aerospace, defense and military industries, such as the high-temperature parts of rocket and aircraft engines, missile cases, tail rudders, etc., which can greatly reduce the weight of aircraft while resisting high temperatures. However, traditional high-temperature titanium alloys containing multiple types of elements (more than six) have a complex impact on the solidification, deformation, and phase transformation processes of the alloys, which greatly increases the difficulty of casting and deformation manufacturing of aerospace and military components. Therefore, developing low-component high-temperature titanium alloys suitable for hot processing and forming is urgent. This study used data augmentation (Gaussian noise) to expedite the development of a novel quinary high-temperature titanium alloy. Utilizing data augmentation, the generalization abilities of four machine learning models (XGBoost, RF, AdaBoost, Lasso) were effectively improved, with the XGBoost model demonstrating superior prediction accuracy (with an R2 value of 0.94, an RMSE of 53.31, and an MAE of 42.93 in the test set). Based on this model, a novel Ti-7.2Al-1.8Mo-2.0Nb-0.4Si (wt.%) alloy was designed and experimentally validated. The UTS of the alloy at 600 °C was 629 MPa, closely aligning with the value (649 MPa) predicted by the model, with an error of 3.2%. Compared to as-cast Ti1100 and Ti6242S alloy (both containing six elements), the novel quinary alloy has considerable high-temperature (600 °C) mechanical properties and fewer components. The microstructure analysis revealed that the designed alloy was an α+β type alloy, featuring a typical Widmanstätten structure. The fracture form of the alloy was a mixture of brittle and ductile fracture at both room and high temperatures. Full article

This study investigates the effect of boron carbide (B4C) ceramic reinforcement on the microstructural, mechanical, electrical, and electrochemical properties of CoCrMo, Ti, and 17-4 PH alloys produced via powder metallurgy for potential biomedical applications. A systematic experimental design was employed, incorporating varying B4C contents into each matrix through mechanical alloying, cold pressing, and vacuum sintering. The microstructural integrity and dispersion of B4C were examined using scanning electron microscopy. The performance of the materials was evaluated using several methods, including Vickers hardness, pin-on-disk wear testing, ultrasonic elastic modulus measurements, electrical conductivity, and electrochemical assessments (potentiodynamic polarization and EIS). This study’s findings demonstrated that B4C significantly enhanced the hardness and wear resistance of all alloys, especially Ti- and CoCrMo-based systems. However, an inverse correlation was observed between B4C content and corrosion resistance, especially in 17-4 PH matrices. Ti-5B4C was identified as the most balanced composition, exhibiting high wear resistance, low corrosion rate and elastic modulus values approaching those of human bone. Weibull analysis validated the consistency and reliability of key performance metrics. The results show that adding B4C can change the properties of biomedical alloys, offering engineering advantages for B4C-reinforced biomedical implants. Ti-B4C composites exhibit considerable potential for application in advanced implant technologies. Full article

Body-centered cubic (BCC) refractory high-entropy alloys (RHEAs) demonstrate significant potential as nuclear structural materials due to their exceptional mechanical properties and radiation tolerance. While Zr-containing RHEAs often develop multiphase structures through Zr-rich phase precipitation to enhance high-temperature mechanical performance, their irradiation response mechanisms remain poorly understood. This study investigated the microstructure evolution and radiation damage behavior in equiatomic MoNbTiVZr RHEA under Au-ion irradiation at fluences of 2 × 1015, 4 × 1015, and 1 × 1016 ions/cm2. Microstructural characterization revealed that the annealed alloy primarily consisted of near-equiatomic BCC1 phase, Zr-rich BCC2 phase, (Mo,V)Zr Laves phase, and ordered Zr2C phase. Post-irradiation analysis showed distinct defect evolution patterns: the BCC1 phase developed fine dislocation loops, while the Zr-rich BCC2 and Zr2C phases exhibited dislocation clusters and dense dislocation networks, respectively. BCC1 phase exhibited the most pronounced irradiation hardening corresponding to its fine, dispersed dislocation loop characteristics. Phase separation induced by Zr precipitation reduced chemical complexity, accelerating irradiation defect evolution. These findings demonstrated that Zr-rich phase precipitation detrimentally impacted the radiation resistance of BCC-structured RHEAs, suggesting that single-phase stability should be prioritized in nuclear material design. In this study, a strategy was adopted to promote the formation of NiAl precipitates with the aim of enhancing strength by incorporating a 0.2 wt.% Al into a traditional ultra-low carbon bainitic (ULCB) steel alloy. By integrating thermo-mechanical control processing (TMCP) and a tailored tempering process, a new-generation steel with an outstanding combination of properties has been successfully developed for shipbuilding and marine engineering equipment. It features a yield strength of 880 MPa, a yield ratio of 0.84, and an impact toughness of 175 J. The precipitation characteristics of nanoscale particles in this steel, including NiAl intermetallics and carbides, were systematically investigated. The results show that the alloy with low Al addition formed NiAl precipitates during tempering. The high-density distributions of NiAl, (Mo, V)C, and (Ti, V, Nb)C precipitates, which exhibit slow coarsening kinetics, played a dominant role in enhancing the strength of the tempered steel. In addition to precipitation, the microstructure before and after tempering was also analyzed. It was observed that a granular bainite morphology was favorable for decreasing the yield ratio. Additionally, the formation of reverse-transformed austenite during tempering was critical for retaining toughness despite substantial strength gains. Finally, theoretical modeling was employed to quantitatively assess the contributions of these microstructural modifications to yield strength enhancement of thermo-mechanical controlled processing (TMCP) and tempered steel. This study establishes a fundamental basis for subsequent industrial-scale development and practical engineering applications of novel products. Full article

Refractory metal-based Mo-Si-B alloys have long been considered the most promising candidates for replacing nickel-based superalloys in the aerospace and energy sector due to their outstanding mechanical properties and good oxidation of the Mo-silicide phases. In general, the addition of vanadium to Mo-Si-B alloys leads to a significant density reduction, while small amounts of titanium provide additional strengthening without changing the phase evolution within the Moss-Mo3Si-Mo5SiB2 phase field. In this work, high-energy ball milling studies on Mo-40V-9Si-8B, substituting both molybdenum and vanadium with 2 and 5 at. % Ti in all constituents, were performed to evaluate the potential milling parameters and investigate the effects of Ti doping on the milling characteristics and phase formation of these multicomponent alloys. After different milling durations, the powders were analysed with regard to their microstructure, particle size, oxygen concentration and microhardness. After heat treatment, the silicide phases (Mo,V)3Si and (Mo,V)5SiB2 precipitated homogeneously within a (Mo,V) solid solution matrix phase. Thermodynamic phase calculations using the CALPHAD method showed good agreement with the experimental phase compositions after annealing, confirming the stability of the observed microstructure. Multi-Phase Design Strategy for Synergistic Strength–Ductility Optimization in V-Ti-Cr-Nb-Mo Refractory High-Entropy Alloys

Controlling multiple phases by adjusting elemental ratios and applying heat treatments effectively balances the strength and ductility of refractory high-entropy alloys. In this study, five types of V-Ti-Cr-Nb-Mo alloys were designed by varying the contents of V, Ti, and Nb, followed by annealing at 1200 °C for 8 h. The alloys’ crystal structures, microstructure evolution, and mechanical properties were systematically investigated. The V-Ti-Cr-Nb-Mo alloys exhibited a typical dendritic structure with a dual-phase (BCC + HCP) matrix. When the Nb content was maintained at 35 at.% with increasing V content, the volume fraction of the HCP phase increased, and the C14 Laves phase emerged. The as-cast alloy V15Ti30Cr5Nb35Mo15, with a triple-phase (BCC + HCP + Laves) structure, exhibited excellent mechanical properties, including a compressive strength of 1775 MPa and a ductility of 18.2%. After annealing, the HCP phase coarsened and partially dissolved, the Laves phase precipitation reduced, and while the hardness and strength decreased, the ductility improved significantly. The annealed alloy V5Ti35Cr5Nb40Mo15, with a dual-phase (BCC + HCP) structure, achieved a ductility of 26.9% under a compressive strength of 1530 MPa. This work demonstrates that multi-phase refractory high-entropy alloys can significantly enhance the strength–ductility synergy, providing an experimental foundation for the compositional design and performance optimization of refractory high-entropy alloys. Ti-2Al-9.2Mo-2Fe (2A2F) alloy is a low-cost β-Ti alloy in which the expensive β-stabilizing elements (Ta, Nb, W, Ni) are replaced with relatively inexpensive Mo and Fe for use in low-cost applications in various industries. The 2A2F alloy exhibits excellent mechanical properties such as high specific strength and low elastic modulus compared to conventional steel alloys but is prone to brittleness owing to the formation of the ω phase when heat-treated at relatively low temperatures. Therefore, an appropriate aging treatment should be performed to control the precipitation of the isothermal ω phase and secondary α phase. This study aims to derive the appropriate aging-treatment conditions following a solution treatment at 790 °C for 1 h, which is below the β-transus temperature of 815 °C. The aging treatments are conducted at holding temperatures in the range of 450–600 °C and holding times between 1 and 18 h. At relatively low aging temperatures of 450 °C and 500 °C, the precipitation of the isothermal ω phase resulted in significantly high hardness and compressive strength. As the aging temperature and holding time increased, the ω phase gradually transformed into the secondary α phase, leading to a balanced combination of strength and ductility. However, at excessively high aging temperatures and prolonged durations, excessive precipitation and growth of secondary α phases occurred, which caused a reduction in hardness and compressive strength, accompanied by an increase in ductility. In this study, the effects of precipitation evolution on mechanical properties such as tensile strength and hardness under various heat treatment conditions were comparatively analyzed. Full article

This study presents the characteristics of the Ti-33Mo-0.2C alloy, which belongs to the group of titanium alloys with a stable β phase and contains 0.27 wt% carbon; this is significantly higher than the permissible level for this alloy, which is 0.1 wt%. The Ti-33Mo-0.2C alloy was melted in a vacuum induction furnace with a cold copper crucible and subsequently processed into a 12 mm diameter rod through hot rolling and annealing under standard conditions. The microstructure, as well as the mechanical and physicochemical properties of the Ti-33Mo-0.2C alloy, were compared with those of the Ti-33Mo alloy of a similar chemical composition. The following techniques were used to characterize the microstructure and properties of the alloys: LM; SEM/EDS (WDS); XRD; and mechanical, creep, and corrosion testing. The conducted analyses demonstrated that the addition of approximately 0.2 wt% carbon to the Ti-33Mo alloy leads to the expected improvement in microstructural stability by reducing grain growth and inhibiting the precipitation of the α phase at β grain boundaries. Consequently, a unique simultaneous enhancement of both strength and ductility, with increased creep resistance, is observed while maintaining the excellent corrosion resistance of the investigated alloy. The observed beneficial effects and additional capabilities resulting from the presence of carbon in the investigated alloy justify the conclusion that carbon should no longer be regarded as an undesirable impurity, which stands in contrast to some previous statements. Scaling up the production of TiAl turbine wheels for passenger car turbochargers requires the fabrication of thin blades that are similar to those of nickel-based superalloys. To achieve this, the molten metal fillability and impact resistance of thin blades must be improved. In this study, the effects of composition on these properties are predicted using simple laboratory experiments with binary, ternary, and practical alloys and are then verified with actual turbine wheels. The melt fillability of the turbine wheel blade is predicted using the amount of molten metal passing through an Al2O3-1%SiO2 mesh. The binary alloy exhibits the best fillability, which is reduced by the addition of Cr and Si. Charpy impact tests on as-cast materials at 25 and 850 °C show that the addition of Cr and Mn improves the impact resistance, but the addition of Nb, W, Mo and Si reduces it. Therefore, the molten metal fillability and/or impact resistance of practical TiAl alloys containing such additives owing to other requirements are low and require improvement for use in thin-blade turbine wheel applications. In this paper, a new TaMoNbTiZr multielement alloy has been designed, using chemical elements that exhibit extremely low bio-toxicity for the human body. The alloy was obtained by melting in vacuum arc remelting (VAR) equipment MRF ABJ 900 from high-purity chemical elements (99.5%) as mini-ingots having about 40 g weight each. The biocompatible alloys underwent changes in hardness after performing the annealing at 900 °C for 2 h, followed by cooling in water. The new alloy had an average hardness in the cast state of 545 HV0.5, and after heat treatment, it hardened to a value of 984 HV0.5, over 40% higher than that in the casting state, which ensures a longer working period. To use them as materials for medical instruments, their biocompatibility was highlighted through specific laboratory tests. For this, mesenchymal stem cells isolated from bone tissue and a human fibroblast cell line were cultured in vitro on the TaMoNbTiZr alloy’s surface. The biocompatibility of the alloy with the biological environment was evaluated by analyzing cell viability, adhesion, and proliferation, and in parallel, the cytolysis effects manifested by the increase in lactate dehydrogenase activity in the culture media were analyzed. Conventional etchants for multi-metal/alloy stacked structures often suffer from nonuniform etching, residual layers, or undercutting, failing to meet high-generation production standards. This study presents a stable copper-molybdenum (Cu-Mo) etchant with extended bath life for thin film transistor liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) applications, achieved through compositional optimization. Systematic investigations have been conducted on the effects of etching time, copper ion (Cu2+) loading (bath life) and storage time on the etch performance, alongside evaluations of sudden-eruption point and material compatibility. Results demonstrate that over-etching beyond the “detected endpoint” by 10% to 90% maintains critical dimension (CD) bias and taper angle of MoNiTi(MTD)/Cu/MTD three-layer and Cu/MTD two-layer within process specifications, as well as the difference between the CD bias of the three-layer and two-layer structures at the same over-etch time. The optimized formulation exhibits a 20% broader process window and 20% longer bath life compared to the process-of-record (POR) etchant. Shelf stability exceeds 15 days with minimal performance degradation, while maintaining compatibility with industrial equipment materials. These advancements address key challenges in high-precision etching for advanced TFT-LCD manufacturing, providing a scalable solution for next-generation display production. Full article
