The Earth’s lithosphere, the rigid outermost layer of the planet, is composed of numerous tectonic plates of varying sizes that move over the underlying asthenosphere. The motion and interaction of these plates give rise to a wide range of geodynamic processes. Accurate monitoring of these processes is essential for maintaining a stable, up-to-date, and reliable terrestrial reference frame. This study investigates the horizontal and vertical motions of the Antarctic Plate resulting from its interactions with adjacent plates. Tectonic plate movements can be determined using several space-geodetic techniques, including Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI), Satellite Laser Ranging (SLR), and Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR). Among these methods, GNSS is currently the most widely used, as plate motions can be derived from continuous observations recorded at permanent stations and processed using scientific or commercial software. Within the scope of this research, GNSS data collected between 2020 and 2023 were processed using the GAMIT/GLOBK V.10.7 software package to estimate the coordinates and velocities of stations located on the Antarctic, South American, African, and Australian Plates in the ITRF14 reference frame. Furthermore, plate-fixed solutions were generated to analyze the relative motion of the Antarctic Plate with respect to neighboring plates. The results indicate that the Antarctic Plate moves at an average velocity of approximately 4–18 mm/year in the ITRF14 frame. The plate diverges from both the African and Australian Plates and exhibits predominantly strike-slip motion relative to the South American Plate. A comparison with existing global plate motion models demonstrates that the obtained velocities are consistent within 0–5 mm/year. Full article

Precise point positioning ambiguity resolution (PPP-AR) is a key technique for high-precision global navigation satellite system (GNSS) observations, with phase bias products playing a critical role in its implementation. The multi-GNSS experiment analysis center at Wuhan University (WUM) has adopted the undifferenced ambiguity resolution (UDAR) approach to generate high-precision orbit, clock, and observable-specific bias (OSB) products to support PPP-AR since day 162 of 2023. This study presents the analysis strategy employed and assesses the impact of the transition to ambiguity resolution on the orbit precision, using metrics such as orbit boundary discontinuities (OBD) and satellite laser ranging (SLR) validation. Additionally, the stability of the OSB products and the overall performance of PPP-AR solutions are evaluated. The OBD demonstrates specific improvements of 7.1% and 9.5% for GPS and Galileo, respectively, when UDAR is applied. Notably, BDS-3 medium Earth orbit satellites show a remarkable 15.2% improvement compared to the double-differenced results. However, for the remaining constellations, the improvements are either minimal or result in degradation. Using GPS and GLONASS solutions from the International GNSS Service (IGS) and other solutions from the European Space Agency (ESA) as references, the orbit differences of WUM solutions based on UDAR exhibit a significant reduction. However, the improvements in SLR validation are limited, as the radial orbit precision is primarily influenced by the dynamic model. The narrow-lane ambiguity fixing rate for static PPP-AR, based on data from approximately 430 globally distributed stations, reaches 99.2%, 99.2%, 88.8%, and 98.6% for GPS, Galileo, BDS-2, and BDS-3, respectively. The daily repeatability of station coordinates is approximately 1.4 mm, 1.9 mm, and 3.9 mm in the east, north, and up directions, respectively. Overall, these results demonstrate the effectiveness and potential of WUM’s undifferenced ambiguity resolution approach in enhancing GNSS data processing and facilitating PPP-AR applications. With the application and promotion of space geodesy, the popularization of remote sensing technology, and the development of artificial intelligence, a more accurate and stable Terrestrial Reference Frame (TRF) has become more urgent. For example, sea level change detection, crustal deformation monitoring, and driverless cars, among others, require the accuracy of the terrestrial reference frame to be better than 1 mm in positioning and 0.1 mm/a in velocity, respectively. However, the current frequently used ITRF2014 and ITRF2020 do not satisfy such requirements. Therefore, this paper analyzes the coordinate residual time series data of linear TRFs and finds there are still some unlabeled jumps and time-dependent periodic signals, especially in the GNSS coordinate residuals, which can lead to incorrect station epoch coordinates and velocities, further affecting the accuracy and stability of the TRF. The unlabeled jumps could be detected by the sequential t-test analysis of regime shifts (STARS) combined with the generalized extreme Studentized deviate (GESD) algorithms introduced in our earlier paper. These nonlinear time-dependent periodic signals could be modeled better by singular spectrum analysis (SSA) with respect to least squares fitting; the fitting period is no longer composed of semi-annual and annual items, as with ITRF2014. The periods of continuous coordinate residual time series data longer than 5 years are obtained by FFT. The results show that there are no period signals for individual SLR/VLBI sites, and there are still other period terms, such as 34 weeks, 20.8 weeks and 17.3 weeks, in addition to semi-annual and annual items for some GNSS sites. Moreover, after SSA corrections, the re-calculated TRF and the corresponding EOP could be obtained, based on data from the Chinese Earth Rotation and Reference System Service (CERS) TRF and the Earth Orientation Parameter (EOPs) multi-technique determination software package (CERS TRF&EOP V2.0) developed by the Shanghai Astronomical Observatory (SHAO). Their accuracy could be evaluated with respect to the ITRF2014 and the IERS 14 C04, respectively. The results show that the accuracy and stability of the newly established a nonlinear TRF and EOP based on SSA have been greatly improved and better than a linear TRF and EOP. SSA is better than least squares fitting, especially for those coordinate residual time series with varying amplitude and phase. For GPS, comparing with the ITRF2014, the station coordinate accuracy of 10.8% is better than 1 mm, and the station velocity accuracy of 4.4% is better than 0.1 mm/year. There are 3.1% VLBI stations, for which coordinate accuracy is better than 1 mm and velocity accuracy is better than 0.1 mm/year. However, there are no stations with coordinates and velocities better than 1 mm and 0.1 mm/year for the SLR and DORIS. The WRMS values of polar motion x, polar motion y, LOD, and UT1-UTC are reduced by 2.4%, 3.2%, 2.7%, and 0.96%, respectively. The EOP’s accuracy in SOL-B, in addition to LOD, is better than that of the JPL. Full article

International terrestrial reference frame (ITRF) input data, generated by Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), Satellite Laser Ranging (SLR), Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI), and Doppler Orbitography and Radiopositioning integrated by satellite (DORIS) combination centers (CCs), are considered to be relatively high-quality and accurate solutions. Every few years, these input data are submitted to the three ITRS combination centers, namely Institut Géographique National (IGN), Deutsches Geodätisches Forschungsinstitut at the Technische Universität München (DGFI-TUM), and Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), to establish a multi-technique combined terrestrial reference frame (TRF). Generally, these solutions have undergone three rounds of outlier removal: the first at the technique analysis centers during solution generations and the second during the technique-specific combination by the CCs; ITRS CCs then perform a third round of outlier removal and preprocessing during the multi-technique combination of TRFs. However, since the primary objective of CCs is to release the final TRF product, they do not emphasize the publication of analytical preprocessing results, such as the outlier rejection rate. In this paper, our specific focus is on assessing the precision improvement of ITRF input data from 2014 to 2020, which includes evaluating the accuracy of coordinates, the datum accuracy, and the precision of the polar motions, for all four techniques. To achieve the above-mentioned objectives, we independently propose a TRF stacking approach to establish single technical reference frameworks, using software developed by us that is different from the ITRF generation. As a result, roughly 0.5% or less of the SLR observations are identified as outliers, while the ratio of DORIS, GNSS, and VLBI observations are below 1%, around 2%, and ranging from 1% to 1.2%, respectively. It is shown that the consistency between the SLR scale and ITRF has improved, increasing from around −5 mm in ITRF2014 datasets to approximately −1 mm in ITRF2020 datasets. The scale velocity derived from fitting the VLBI scale parameter series with all epochs in ITRF2020 datasets differs by approximately 0.21 mm/year from the velocity obtained by fitting the data up to 2013.75 because of the scale drift of VLBI around 2013. The decreasing standard deviations of the polar motion parameter (XPO, YPO) offsets between Stacking TRFs and 14C04 (20C04) indicate an improvement in the precision of polar motion observations for all four techniques. From the perspective of the weighted root mean square (WRMS) in station coordinates, since the inception of the technique, the station coordinate WRMS of DORIS decreased from 30 mm to 5 mm for X and Y components, and 25 mm to 5 mm for the Z component; SLR WRMS decreased from 20 mm to better than 10 mm (X, Y and Z); GNSS WRMS decreased from 4 mm to 1.5 mm (X and Y) and 5 mm to 2 mm (Z); while VLBI showed no significant change. This paper presents the results of an orbital analysis of satellite laser ranging data performed by the Borowiec SLR station (7811) in the period from July 1993 to December 2019, including the determination of the station positions and velocity. The analysis was performed using the GEODYN-II orbital program for the independent monthly orbital arcs from the results of the LAGEOS-1 and LAGEOS-2 satellites. Each arc was created from the results of the laser observations of a dozen or so selected stations, which were characterized by a large number of normal points and a good quality of observations. The geocentric and topocentric coordinates of the station were analyzed. Factors influencing the uncertainty of the measurements were determined: the number of the normal points, the dispersion of the normal points in relation to the orbits, and the long-term stability of the systematic deviations. The position leap at the end of 2002 and its interpretation in ITRF2014 were analyzed. The 3D stability of the determined positions throughout the period of study was equal to 12.7 mm, with the uncertainty of determination being at the level of 4.3 mm. A very high compliance of the computed velocity of the Borowiec SLR station (24.9 mm/year) with ITRF2014 (25.0 mm/year) was found. Full article

Earth rotation parameters (ERP) are one of the key parameters in realization of the International Terrestrial Reference Frames (ITRF). At present, the International Laser Ranging Service (ILRS) generates the satellite laser ranging (SLR)-based ERP products only using SLR observations to Laser Geodynamics Satellite (LAGEOS) and Etalon satellites. Apart from these geodetic satellites, many low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites of Earth observation missions are also equipped with laser retroreflector arrays, and produce a large number of SLR observations, which are only used for orbit validation. In this study, we focus on the contribution of multiple LEO satellites to ERP estimation. The SLR and Global Positioning System (GPS) observations of the current seven LEO satellites (Swarm-A/B/C, Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE)-C/D, and Sentinel-3A/B) are used. Several schemes are designed to investigate the impact of LEO orbit improvement, the ERP quality of the single-LEO solutions, and the contribution of multiple LEO combinations. We find that ERP estimation using an ambiguity-fixed orbit can attain a better result than that using ambiguity-float orbit. The introduction of an ambiguity-fixed orbit contributes to an accuracy improvement of 0.5%, 1.1% and 15% for X pole, Y pole and station coordinates, respectively. In the multiple LEO satellite solutions, the quality of ERP and station coordinates can be improved gradually with the increase in the involved LEO satellites. The accuracy of X pole, Y pole and length-of-day (LOD) is improved by 57.5%, 57.6% and 43.8%, respectively, when the LEO number increases from three to seven. Moreover, the combination of multiple LEO satellites is able to weaken the orbit-related signal existing in the single-LEO solution. We also investigate the combination of LEO satellites and LAGEOS satellites in the ERP estimation. Compared to the LAGEOS solution, the combination leads to an accuracy improvement of 0.6445 ms, 0.6288 ms and 0.0276 ms for X pole, Y pole and LOD, respectively. In addition, we explore the feasibility of a one-step method, in which ERP and the orbit parameters are jointly determined, based on SLR and GPS observations, and present a detailed comparison between the one-step solution and two-step solution. The LARES (LAser RElativity Satellite) was built by the Italian Space Agency (ASI) and launched on 13 February 2012 by the European Space Agency. It is intended for studying the Lense–Thirring effect resulting from general relativity as well as for geodynamic studies and satellite geodesy. The satellite is observed by most ground laser stations. The task of this work is to determine the station coordinates and to assess the quality of their determination by comparison with the results from the LAGEOS-1 and LAGEOS-2 satellites. Observation results in the form of normal points (396,105 normal points in total) were downloaded from the EUROLAS Data Center for the period from 29 February 2012 to 31 December 2015. Seven-day orbital arcs were computed by the NASA GSFC GEODYN-II software, determining the coordinates of seventeen selected measuring stations. The average Root Mean Square (RMS) (15.1 mm) of the determined orbits is nearly the same as for LAGEOS (15.2 mm). The stability of the coordinates of each station (3DRMS) is from 9 mm to 46 mm (for LAGEOS, from 5 mm to 15 mm) with the uncertainty of determining the coordinates of 3–11 mm (LAGEOS 2–7 mm). The combined positioning for the LARES + LAGEOS-1 + LAGEOS-2 satellites allows for the stability of 5–18 mm with an uncertainty of 2–6 mm. For most stations, this solution is slightly better than the LAGEOS-only one. Full article

This paper deals with the analysis of local Love and Shida numbers (parameters h2 and l2) values of the Australian Yarragadee and Mount Stromlo satellite laser ranging (SLR) stations. The research was conducted based on data from the Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) satellites, LAGEOS-1 and LAGEOS-2, and Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites, STELLA and STARLETTE. Data from a 60-month time interval, from 01.01.2014 to 01.01.2019, was used. In the first research stage, the Love and Shida numbers values were determined separately from observations of each satellite; the obtained values of h2, l2 exhibit a high degree of compliance, and the differences do not exceed formal error values. At this stage, we found that it was not possible to determine l2 from the data of STELLA and STARLETTE. In the second research stage, we combined the satellite observations of MEO (LAGEOS-1+LAGEOS-2) and LEO (STELLA+STARLETTE) and redefined the h2, l2 parameters. The final values were adopted, and further analyses were made based on the values obtained from the combined observations. For the Yarragadee station, local h2 = 0.5756 ± 0.0005 and l2 = 0.0751 ± 0.0002 values were obtained from LAGEOS-1 + LAGEOS-2 and h2 = 0.5742 ± 0.0015 were obtained from STELLA+STARLETTE data. For the Mount Stromlo station, we obtained the local h2 = 0.5601 ± 0.0006 and l2 = 0.0637 ± 0.0003 values from LAGEOS-1+LAGEOS-2 and h2 = 0.5618 ± 0.0017 from STELLA + STARLETTE. We found discrepancies between the local parameters determined for the Yarragadee and Mount Stromlo stations and the commonly used values of the h2, l2 parameters averaged for the whole Earth (so-called global nominal parameters). The sequential equalization method was used for the analysis, which allowed to determine the minimum time interval necessary to obtain stable h2, l2 values. It turned out to be about 50 months. Additionally, we investigated the impact of the use of local values of the Love/Shida numbers on the determination of the Yarragadee and Mount Stromlo station coordinates. We proposed to determine the stations (X, Y, Z) coordinates in International Terrestrial Reference Frame 2014 (ITRF2014) in two computational versions: using global nominal h2, l2 values and local h2, l2 values calculated during this research. We found that the use of the local values of the h2, l2 parameters in the process of determining the stations coordinates influences the result. Full article

In the framework of the European Gravity Service for Improved Emergency Management (EGSIEM) project, consistent sets of state-of-the-art reprocessed Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) orbits and satellite clock corrections have been generated. The reprocessing campaign includes data starting in 1994 and follows the Center for Orbit Determination in Europe (CODE) processing strategy, in particular exploiting the extended version of the empirical CODE Orbit Model (ECOM). Satellite orbits are provided for Global Positioning System (GPS) satellites since 1994 and for Globalnaya Navigatsionnaya Sputnikovaya Sistema (GLONASS) since 2002. In addition, a consistent set of GPS satellite clock corrections with 30 s sampling has been generated from 2000 and with 5 s sampling from 2003 onwards. For the first time in a reprocessing scheme, GLONASS satellite clock corrections with 30 s sampling from 2008 and 5 s from 2010 onwards were also generated. The benefit with respect to earlier reprocessing series is demonstrated in terms of polar motion coordinates. GNSS satellite clock corrections are validated in terms of completeness, Allan deviation, and precise point positioning (PPP) using terrestrial stations. In addition, the products herein were validated with Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) precise orbit determination (POD) and Satellite Laser Ranging (SLR). For low Earth orbiting satellites, non-gravitational forces cause one of the largest perturbing accelerations. During a precise orbit determination (POD), the accurate modeling of the satellite-body attitude and solar panel orientation is important since the satellite’s effective cross-sectional area is directly related to the perturbing acceleration. Moreover, the position of tracking instruments that are mounted on the satellite body are affected by the satellite attitude. For satellites like Jason-1/-2/-3, attitude information is available in two forms—as a so-called nominal yaw steering model and as observation-based (measured by star tracking cameras) quaternions of the spacecraft body orientation and rotation angles of the solar arrays. In this study, we have developed a preprocessing procedure for publicly available satellite attitude information. We computed orbits based on Satellite Laser Ranging (SLR) observations to the Jason satellites at an overall time interval of approximately 25 years, using each of the two satellite attitude representations. Based on the analysis of the orbits, we investigate the influence of using preprocessed observation-based attitude in contrast to using a nominal yaw steering model for the POD. About 75% of all orbital arcs calculated with the observation-based satellite attitude data result in a smaller root mean square (RMS) of residuals. More precisely, the resulting orbits show an improvement in the overall mission RMS of SLR observation residuals of 5.93% (Jason-1), 8.27% (Jason-2) and 4.51% (Jason-3) compared to the nominal attitude realization. Besides the satellite orbits, also the estimated station coordinates benefit from the refined attitude handling, that is, the station repeatability is clearly improved at the draconitic period. Moreover, altimetry analysis indicates a clear improvement of the single-satellite crossover differences (6%, 15%, and 16% reduction of the mean of absolute differences and 1.2%, 2.7%, and 1.3% of their standard deviations for Jason-1/-2/-3, respectively). Sentinel-3A/3B (S3A/B) satellites are equipped with a number of precise instruments dedicated to the measurement of surface topography, sea and land surface temperatures and ocean and land surface color. The high-precision orbit is guaranteed by three instruments: Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver, laser retroreflector dedicated to Satellite Laser Ranging (SLR) and Doppler Orbitography and Radiopositioning Integrated by Satellite (DORIS) antenna. In this article, we check the possibility of using SLR observations and GPS-based reduced-dynamic orbits of active S3A/B satellites for the determination of global geodetic parameters, such as geocenter motion, Earth rotation parameters (ERPs) and the realization of the terrestrial reference frame, based on data from 2016-2018. The calculation process was preceded with the estimation of SLR site range biases, different network constraining tests and a different number of orbital arcs in the analyzed solutions. The repeatability of SLR station coordinates based solely on SLR observations to S3A/B is at the level of 8-16 mm by means of interquartile ranges even without network constraining in 7-day solutions. The combined S3A/B and LAGEOS solutions show a consistency of estimated station coordinates better than 13 mm, geocenter coordinates with a RMS of 6 mm, pole coordinates with a RMS of 0.19 mas and Length-of-day with a RMS of 0.07 ms/day when referred to the IERS-14-C04 series. The altimetry observations have to be corrected by the geocenter motion to obtain unbiased estimates of the mean sea level rise. The geocenter motion is typically derived from SLR measurements to passive LAGEOS cannonball-like satellites. We found, however, that SLR observations to active Sentinel satellites are well suited for the determination of global geodetic parameters, such as Earth rotation parameters and geocenter motion, which even further increases the potential applications of Sentinel missions for deriving geophysical parameters. Crustal movement is one of the main factors influencing the change of the Earth system, especially in its vertical direction, which affects people’s daily life through the frequent occurrence of earthquakes, geological disasters, and so on. In order to get a better study and application of the vertical crustal movement,as well as its changes, the foundation and prerequisite areto devise and establish its reference frame; especially, a unified global reference frame is required. Since SLR (satellite laser ranging) is one of the most accurate space techniques for monitoring geocentric motion and can directly measure the ground station’s geocentric coordinates and velocities relative to the centre of the Earth’s mass, we proposed to take the vertical velocity of the SLR technique in the ITRF2008 framework as the reference frame of vertical crustal motion, which we defined as the SLR vertical reference frame (SVRF). The systematic bias between other velocity fields and the SVRF was resolved by using the GPS (Global Positioning System) and VLBI (very long baseline interferometry) velocity observations, and the unity of other velocity fields and SVRF was realized,as well. The results show that it is feasible and suitable to take the SVRF as a reference frame, which has both geophysical meanings and geodetic observations, so we recommend taking the SLR vertical velocity under ITRF2008 as the global reference frame of vertical crustal movement.
