Environmental education projects can often be short-term or in extra-curricular spaces, rather than holistically nestled into a way of teaching and learning. Research has highlighted the importance of considering the emotional and active aspects of learning, arguing that we must address education for sustainability through the hands (doing) and the heart (feeling) as well as the head (thinking). Here we ask how this consciousness can be embedded into a school ethos. This paper reports on a co-created ethnographic case study, drawing primarily on observation data, aiming to understand how connectivity with nature is cultivated within a Steiner Waldorf school in the UK. We found that Steiner Waldorf Education cultivates connectivity with nature through play and creativity, the use of songs and verses, prevalence of natural materials, a reverence for Mother Earth and a focus on the rhythm of the seasons through festivals. Through this holistic practice, a strong connectivity with nature is fostered. Based on the evidence that connectivity with nature increases pro-environmental behaviours, we seek to contribute to the environmental education literature the potential of a holistic approach to education that foregrounds the hands and heart in the elementary stages of education rather than addressing environmental challenges head on. We argue that this approach can inspire change through strengthening our relationship to the natural world, thus empowering young people to shape a more sustainable future. Full article

This article offers a theoretically nuanced and empirically grounded investigation into the paradoxical afterlife of classical versification within the poetic practices of the Russian and Soviet avant-garde. Challenging the persistent historiographic narrative that equates avant-garde poetics with an unequivocal rupture from tradition, the study demonstrates that canonical metrical forms—most notably iambic tetrameter—continued to operate as structurally productive, albeit critically reconfigured, elements within experimental verse. Drawing on a broad corpus encompassing poetic manifestos, verse texts, and prose writings by Vladimir Maiakovskii, Ilia Sel’vinskii, Semen Kirsanov, and Nikolai Aseev, the authors combine close formal analysis with quantitative prosodic modeling, including linguistic and speech models derived from Kolmogorov–Taranovsky verse theory. The article argues that avant-garde poets did not simply negate inherited metrics but subjected them to a process of internal recomposition, shifting attention from meter as a fixed scheme to rhythm as a dynamic, semantically charged construct. While rhythmic innovation is shown to be consciously engineered in verse, the analysis of verse-like fragments in prose reveals persistent, unconscious attachments to “classical” rhythmic patterns, particularly the Pushkinian alternating rhythm. This tension between declarative rejection and latent continuity illuminates the avant-garde’s distinctive mode of negotiating tradition: not abolishing it, but instrumentalizing it within a broader project of total artistic reorganization. The study thus reframes avant-garde prosody as a site where innovation and inheritance coexist in a state of productive contradiction, reshaping our understanding of modernist poetic technique. The article discusses contexts of Henry Miller’s works (“Black Spring”, “Tropic of Capricorn”) and the poem Brooklyn Bridge by Vladimir Mayakovsky, which have in common the theme and imagery of a Bridge and the avant-garde era of creation. The authors of the article analyze not so much the “intersection” as the “union” of Miller and Mayakovsky, that is, not so much coincidences and closeness as complements that allow us to trace the entire breadth of the avant-garde literary project. In Henry Miller’s works the semantics of the image of a bridge referring to Nietzche’s Thus Spake Zarathustra is primarily noted and analyzed. In the analysis of Mayakovsky’s poem, special attention is paid to the verse and thematic composition of the text; metaphors; sound repetitions and echoes and their semantics; the specific historicism; and an important concept of reconstruction from traces, remains, and reflexes, turning to which Mayakovsky comes closer to, the unknown to him, Charles S. Peirce (abduction) and Carlo Ginzburg (keys), who was not yet born in the year the text was written. Full article

In the context of the BiblIndex project, which is an online index of biblical textual reuses by the Church Fathers, intrabiblical intertextuality must be considered to better understand the underlying basis of the Church Fathers’ thought. This paper examines the reuse of Psalmic texts in the New Testament as a test case for experimenting with a detection tool that uses traditional natural language processing (NLP) methods exclusively. Biblical verses are compared using similarity measures based on various NLP operations, such as tokenization, lemmatization, part-of-speech tagging, stop word filtering and synset assignment. Textometric measures provide a framework for the numerical assessment of grammatical, lexical and semantic similarities between textual units. We demonstrate the efficiency of this reproducible method, which does not involve a ‘black box’ effect, for detecting and characterizing literal quotations and a significant range of echoes. The geophysical techniques ground penetrating radar (GPR) and electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) are commonly used data collection methodologies in numerous disciplines, including archaeology. Many researchers are now, or will be in the future, associated with projects that use these geophysical techniques, but who are not well versed in the instrumentation, its function, related terminology, data interpretation, and outcomes. This entry outlines the general approach and background for completing this type of research, dissects the methodology from a completed geoarchaeological project that uses both GPR and ERT, and provides concise definitions and explanations for all facets of the methodology. Based on this methodology, 21 terms or concepts related to GPR are explained in detail, as are 26 terms or concepts related to ERT, and visual representations of some of the terms and concepts are further illuminated via 11 figures. Overall, the cultural and artistic practices that continue to surround hitchhiking subcultures are largely untapped by serious scholastic research. This paper, deliberately non-linear, explores the haptic dimensions of hitchhiking. We use this mode of travel to make certain observations about our late-modern, or cosmopolitan age, as well as about some of the subcultures surrounding adventurous, competitive, and alternative transport. The piece is grounded in a form of duo-auto-ethnography, inspired by the experiences of two authors who are well-versed in this practice, but who have still not met in person. The paper argues that one of the main lessons to arise from the era of mass hitchhiking during the mid-twentieth century is that the types of sensory knowledge acquired and passed on by hitchhikers themselves are unique in their spatio-temporal potential for being imaginatively transformed into tools for shaping wider socio-political projects. The assumption of similarity between artistic speech melody and music was deeply rooted in Russian Symbolism and based on the culturally established analogy between poetry/lyrical prosody and music. This connection was the basis for a wide range of performative practices focused on performed word such as the experiments of director Vsevolod Meyerhold and composer Mikhail Gnesin in Petrograd theater studios in 1900–1910s, and the collective declamation of Vasilii Serezhnikov and Vsevolod Vsevolodskii-Gerngross. However, after the October revolution, this analogy not only inspired new artistic paths, but also new approaches in humanities. This article explores the correlation between a practice-based strategy and advanced theory that characterized the structure and curricula of the Petrograd Institute of the Living Word (Institut zhivogo slova; 1918–1924). Its specific institutional features affected the development of disciplines in the fields of linguistics, poetics, and literary studies. The earlier period of its work (1918–1921) was defined by the search for common ground, which could unite representatives of different disciplines. The study of the melody of speech, which this article is focused on, became one of the key joint research projects of the Institute’s team. It is the perspective of the Institute of the Living Word’s research projects and performance-related art practices that is used for analysis of the Russian Formalist approaches in the 1910s–20s, specifically articles and books of philologist Boris Eikhenbaum on the melody and composition of verse intonation. Industry is the primary application for induction machines. As such, it is essential to calculate the induction devices’ electrical properties accurately. With DC testing, no-load rotor tests, and locked rotor tests, one may empirically evaluate the electrical variables of induction motors. These tests are expensive and difficult to conduct, however. The information supplied by machine makers can also be used to accurately approximate the equivalent variables of the circuits in induction machines. This article has successfully predicted motor reactance (Xm) for both double- and single-cage models using artificial neural networks (ANN). Although ANNs have been investigated in the literature, the ANN structures were trained to use unmemorized training. Besides ANN, six other approaches have been suggested to address this issue: heap-based optimization (HBO), leagues championship algorithm (LCA), multi-verse optimization (MVO), osprey optimization algorithm (OOA), cuckoo optimization algorithm (COA), and sooty tern optimization algorithm (STOA). The efficaciousness of the suggested approaches was compared with each another. Regarding the obtained outcomes, the suggested MVO- multi-layer perceptron (MLP) technique performed better than the other five methods regarding reactance prediction, with R2 of 0.99598 and 0.9962, and RMSE of 20.31492 and 20.80626 in the testing and training phases, respectively. For the projected model, the suggested ANNs have produced great results. The novelty lies in the mentioned methods’ ability to tackle the complexities and challenges associated with induction motor reactance optimization, providing innovative approaches to finding optimal or near-optimal solutions. As researchers continue to explore and refine these techniques, their impact on motor design and efficiency will likely grow, driving advancements in electrical engineering. Full article

Background: Ethics is an essential component of human research, and knowledge and awareness of ethical guidelines are required to conduct research involving human subjects and ensure the participants’ safety. Objectives: To investigate medical professionals’ and researchers’ knowledge of national and international research ethics guidelines, key principles in human research projects, ethical issues in different types of research, the importance of informed consent, and institutional review boards. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study with 251 participants, including physicians, nurses, and researchers from three different research centers and hospitals in Riyadh city, was carried out using an electronic self-structured questionnaire. The sample size was estimated using OpenEpi, Version 3. The questionnaire contained six different sets of questions to analyze knowledge about research ethics and guidelines. The results were analyzed using SAS version 9.4 (SAS Institute Inc., Cary, NC, USA). Results: About 53.78% of the participants had received research ethics education, out of which 78.51% of the participants expressed the need for more training in research ethics education. The Belmont Report showed a high level of unawareness among nurses (88.3%), physicians (73.8%), and researchers (55.32%). Nurses had a high level of positive attitude about all the key principles of human research. The highest level of awareness of ethical issues in clinical trials and interventional studies was found among researchers (54%), and the lowest level of awareness was exhibited by nurses (19.32%). Nurses (74.34%) and physicians (62.79%) had the lowest positive attitudes about obtaining children’s assent in pediatric research. Physicians and researchers had a higher awareness of the IRB than nurses. Conclusion: Researchers were well-versed in research ethics, regulatory guidelines, and ethical issues in various types of research, whereas nurses were enthusiastic about key principles in human research and the importance of informed consent. This study shows that a very low percentage of nurses have received research ethics education and emphasizes the critical importance of including research ethics education in nursing curricula, as the involvement of nurses in research is inevitable. This study also shows the lack of knowledge among nurses, researchers, and doctors about various international guidelines. It emphasizes the importance of adding regulatory guidelines to the curriculum and teaching them effectively to students. Also, periodic workshops should be conducted to enhance the practical knowledge of the professionals regarding the guidelines and guide them in overcoming the practical difficulties they encounter during their practice. Cancer misinformation is becoming an increasingly complex issue. When a person or a loved one receives a diagnosis of possible cancer, that person, family and friends will try to better inform themselves in this area of healthcare. Like most people, they will turn to their clinician for guidance and the internet to better verse themselves on the topic. But can they trust the information provided online? Are there ways to provide a quick evaluation of such information in order to prevent low-quality information and potentially dangerous consequences of trusting it? In the context of the UL Cancer Research Network (ULCan), this interdisciplinary project aims to develop the Health Information Portal for Patients and Public (HIPPP), a web-based application co-designed with healthcare domain experts that helps to improve people navigate the health information space online. HIPPP will be used by patients and the general public to evaluate user-provided web-based health information (WBHI) sources with respect to the QUEST framework and return a quality score for the information sources. As a web application, HIPPP is developed with modern extreme model-driven development (XMDD) technologies in order to make it easily adaptable and evolvable. To facilitate the automated evaluation of WBHI, HIPPP embeds an artificial intelligence (AI) pipeline developed following model-driven engineering principles. Through co-design with health domain experts and following model-driven engineering principles, we have extended the Domain Integrated Modelling Environment (DIME) to include a graphical domain-specific language (GDSL) for developing websites for evaluating WBHI. This GDSL allows for greater participation from stakeholders in the development process of both the user-facing website and the AI-driven evaluation pipeline through encoding concepts familiar to those stakeholders within the modelling language. The time efficiency study conducted as part of this research found that the HIPPP evaluation pipeline evaluates a sample of WBHI with respect to the QUEST framework up to 98.79% faster when compared to the time taken by a human expert evaluator. Renewable energies are clean alternatives to the highly polluting fossil fuels that are still used in the power generation sector. The goal of this research was to look into replacing a Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO) thermal power plant in Limbe, southwest Cameroon, with a hybrid photovoltaic (PV) and wind power plant combined with a storage system. Lithium batteries and hydrogen associated with fuel cells make up this storage system. The total cost (TC) of the project over its lifetime was minimized in order to achieve the optimal sizing of the hybrid power plant components. To ensure the reliability of the new hybrid power plant, a criterion measuring the loss of power supply probability (LPSP) was implemented as a constraint. Moth Flame Optimization (MFO), Improved Grey Wolf Optimizer (I-GWO), Multi-Verse Optimizer (MVO), and African Vulture Optimization Algorithm (AVOA) were used to solve this single-objective optimization problem. The optimization techniques entailed the development of mathematical models of the components, with hourly weather data for the selected site and the output of the replaced thermal power plant serving as input data. All four algorithms produced acceptable and reasonably comparable results. However, in terms of proportion, the total cost obtained with the MFO algorithm was 0.32%, 0.40%, and 0.63% lower than the total costs obtained with the I-GWO, MVO, and AVOA algorithms, respectively. Finally, the effect of the type of storage coupled to the PV and wind systems on the overall project cost was assessed. The MFO meta-heuristic was used to compare the results for the PV–Wind–Hydrogen–Lithium Battery, PV–Wind–Hydrogen, and PV–Wind–Lithium Battery scenarios. The scenario of the PV–Wind–Hydrogen–Lithium Battery had the lowest total cost. This scenario’s total cost was 2.40% and 18% lower than the PV–Wind–Hydrogen and PV–Wind–Lithium Battery scenarios. The intricate interdependency of device design and fabrication process complicates the development of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS). Commercial pressure has motivated industry to implement various tools and methods to overcome challenges and facilitate volume production. By now, these are only hesitantly being picked up and implemented in academic research. In this perspective, the applicability of these methods to research-focused MEMS development is investigated. It is found that even in the dynamics of a research endeavor, it is beneficial to adapt and apply tools and methods deduced from volume production. The key step is to change the perspective from fabricating devices to developing, maintaining and advancing the fabrication process. Tools and methods are introduced and discussed, using the development of magnetoelectric MEMS sensors within a collaborative research project as an illustrative example. This perspective provides both guidance to newcomers as well as inspiration to the well-versed experts. Full article

Construction-induced ground settlement is a serious hazard in underground tunnel construction. Accurate ground settlement prediction has great significance in ensuring the surface building’s stability and human safety. To that end, 148 sets of data were collected from the Singapore Circle Line rail traffic project containing seven defining parameters to create a database for predicting ground settlement. These parameters are the tunnel depth (H), the tunnel advance rate (AR), the EPB earth pressure (EP), the mean SPTN value from the soil crown to the surface (Sm), the mean water content of the soil layer (MC), the mean modulus of elasticity of the soil layer (E), and the grout pressure used for injecting grout into the tail void (GP). Three hybrid models consisting of random forest (RF) and three types of meta-heuristics, Ant Lion Optimizier (ALO), Multi-Verse Optimizer (MVO), and Grasshopper Optimization Algorithm (GOA), were developed to predict ground settlement. Furthermore, the mean absolute error (MAE), the mean absolute percentage error (MAPE), the coefficient of determination (R2) and the root mean square error (RMSE) were used to assess predictive performance of the constructed models for predicting ground settlement. The evaluation results demonstrated that the GOA-RF with a population size of 10 has achieved the most outstanding predictive capability with the indices of MAE (Training set: 2.8224; Test set: 2.3507), MAPE (Training set: 40.5629; Test set: 38.5637), R2 (Training set: 0.9487; Test set: 0.9282), and RMSE (Training set: 4.93; Test set: 3.1576). Accurate prediction of fresh concrete slumps is a complex non-linear problem that depends on several parameters including time, temperature, and shear history. It is also affected by the mixture design and various concrete ingredients. This study investigates the efficiency of three novel integrative approaches for predicting this parameter. To this end, the vortex search algorithm (VSA), multi-verse optimizer (MVO), and shuffled complex evolution (SCE) are used to optimize the configuration of multi-layer perceptron (MLP) neural network. The optimal complexity of each model was appraised via sensitivity analysis. Various statistical metrics revealed that the accuracy of the MLP was increased after coupling it with the above metaheuristic algorithms. Based on the obtained results, the prediction error of the MLP was decreased by up to 17%, 10%, and 33% after applying the VSA, MVO, and SCE, respectively. Moreover, the SCE emerged as the fastest optimizer. Accordingly, the novel explicit formulation of the SCE-MLP was introduced as a capable model for the practical estimation of fresh concrete slump, which can assist in project planning and management. Successful implementation of construction projects worldwide calls for a set of effective risk management plans in which uncertainties associated with risks and effective response strategies are addressed meticulously. Thus, this study aims to provide an optimization approach with which risk response strategies that maximize the utility function are selected. This selection is by opting for the most appropriate strategies with the highest impact on the project regarding the weight of each risk and budget constraints. Moreover, the risk assessment and response strategy of a construction project in Iran as a case study, based on the global standard of the project management body of knowledge (PMBOK) and related literature, is evaluated. To handle the complexity of the proposed model, different state of the art metaheuristic algorithms including the ant lion optimizer (ALO), dragonfly algorithm (DA), grasshopper optimization algorithm (GOA), Harris hawks optimization (HHO), moth-flame optimization algorithm (MFO), multi-verse optimizer (MVO), sine cosine algorithm (SCA), salp swarm algorithm (SSA), whale optimization algorithm (WOA), and grey wolf optimizer (GWO). These algorithms are validated by the exact solver from CPLEX software and compare with each other. One finding from this comparison is the high performance of MFO and HHO algorithms.
