Assessing Climate Change and Reservoir Impacts on Upper Miño River Flow (NW Iberian Peninsula) Using Neural Networks

Climate change is altering the global hydrological cycle, which, combined with human interventions, such as reservoir operation, further disrupts river flows. Given the heterogeneity and importance of these impacts, and the particularities of each basin, regional studies are essential to assess local vulnerabilities. This study focuses on the upper Miño basin (NW Iberian Peninsula), together with the Belesar reservoir, to evaluate projected changes in streamflow between historical (1985–2014) and future (2070–2099) periods under the SSP5-8.5 and the SSP2-4.5 scenarios. Neural networks were applied to model the hydrological cycle, estimating flow from temperature and precipitation data, as well as to simulate reservoir operation, achieving successful validation. Results for SSP5-8.5 reveal a projected intensification of the hydrological cycle, with the 10th percentile (defining low-flow conditions) projected to decrease by approximately −10%, while the 99.997th percentile (defining high-flow conditions) is expected to increase by about +5%. Mean streamflow is projected to decline by more than −15%. Under the more moderate SSP2-4.5 scenario, changes are less pronounced, with the low-flow percentile expected to decrease by roughly −5% and mean streamflow showing a projected decline not reaching −15%. In contrast, the high-flow percentile exhibits an opposite trend, with a projected decrease of about −30% relative to the historical period. The analysis of reservoir operation was conducted under the most extreme emission scenario (SSP5-8.5), to assess its regulatory capacity under the harshest projected hydrological conditions. Results show that reservoir operation helps moderate the projected impact by redistributing water from wetter to drier periods, more than doubling projected summer flows downstream relative to upstream, and lowering winter flows, with the one-year return period value (99.997th percentile) projected to be reduced by approximately −15% by reservoir operation. Although natural future conditions are projected to become more critical, both the adoption of a more moderate emission pathway and an adequate reservoir operation will contribute to alleviating the most adverse hydrological impacts. This paper focuses on the study of the prehistoric art site at Penedo do Gato Rock Art Shelter (NW Spain) through an interdisciplinary collaboration. A key objective was to develop and implement a multi-analytical protocol for characterising prehistoric rock paintings with portable analytical techniques such as colour spectrophotometry and Raman spectroscopy. Additionally, three possible colouring materials collected during the archaeological survey of the site were investigated by means of X-ray diffraction, stereomicroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy (surface and cross-section modes) with the aim of determining their mineralogical composition and texture. The results indicate that hematite (α-Fe2O3) is the main component of the red motifs. Amorphous carbon has been found in several motifs. The presence of amorphous carbon on the rock suggests it may have been deposited onto the paintings by nearby bonfires; however, the potential use of charcoal as an additive in the red pigments to modify their colour should not be overlooked. Regarding the mineralogical composition of potential colouring materials, only one of the samples can be considered as a viable source. This was the only sample with a compact and homogeneous composition, rich in hematite, making it likely that, after grinding, it was used for painting. In contrast, the other collected samples either lacked hematite or contained only a thin layer of it. In these cases, it is unlikely that the hematite layer was extracted using tools to obtain the pigment. Full article

Marine environmental variability and climate change are interconnected; they are the main causes of the fluctuations in ecosystems and cyclically affect fisheries. This work has four main goals. The first is to present a broad historical review of international research activities on fisheries and climate change, mainly in European waters. We have recovered a selection of seminal international scientific publications from 1914 to 1995, which aroused great interest among the scientific community at that time, although most of these publications have fallen into oblivion in the 21st century. The second goal is to review the main intergovernmental initiatives on climate and marine research from the 1980s to the present, detecting gaps and a lack of unanimity in some guidelines from international organizations. The third goal is to analyze decadal warming/cooling in the Canary Current Upwelling System (extending from the NW Iberian Peninsula to Senegal), to understand the current rapid tropicalization of pelagic and benthic ecosystems in Southern European Atlantic seas. The fourth goal is to identify priority research lines for the future, including the need to promote an international retrospective on fisheries oceanography research, for at least the last hundred years. Estuaries are dynamic and resource-rich ecosystems renowned for their high productivity and ecological significance. The Rías Baixas, located in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula, consist of four highly productive estuaries that support the region’s economy through key fisheries and aquaculture activities. Numerical modeling of biogeochemical processes in the rias is essential to address environmental and anthropogenic pressures, particularly in areas facing intense human development. This study presents a high-resolution water quality model developed using Delft3D 4 software, integrating the hydrodynamic (Delft3D-FLOW) and water quality (Delft3D-WAQ) modules. Calibration and validation demonstrate the robust performance and reliability of the model in simulating critical biogeochemical processes, such as nutrient cycling and phytoplankton dynamics. The model effectively captures seasonal and spatial variations in water quality parameters, including water temperature, salinity, inorganic nutrients, dissolved oxygen, and chlorophyll-a. Of the variables studied, the model performed best for dissolved oxygen, followed by nitrates, phosphates, ammonium, silicate, and chlorophyll-a. While some discrepancies were observed in the inner zones and deeper layers of the rias, the overall performance metrics aligned closely with the observed data, enhancing confidence in the model’s utility for future research and resource management. These results highlight the model’s value as a tool for research and managing water and marine resources in the Rías Baixas. Full article

Bracara Augusta (Braga, Portugal), one of the most important cities of the NW Iberian Peninsula, was founded by the emperor Augustus approximately between the years 16/15 BC. Throughout the Roman period, it has undergone various monumentalisation programmes according to its status, the first one as a convent capital and a later one as a provincial capital. The investigation of the economic cost of construction in the ancient world allows us to understand Roman architecture and the society of builders, both from economic and social perspectives. In recent years, based on the works of Janet DeLaine and Paolo Barresi, despite the large number of variables and the difficulty of quantifying them, a calculation methodology has been developed to approximate the cost of architecture, based on the information contained in two main documents: the Diocletian’s Edict of Prices (301 AD) and the nineteenth-century architecture and engineering manuals summarised by Pegoretti. Our goal is to understand part of the construction process of Roman architecture in the NW Iberian Peninsula, considering the cost of raw materials, namely stone, and the labour required in its preparation and utilisation. In this study, we present a cost proposal associated with the monumentalisation of two of the city’s important buildings: the forum’s large buildings and the theatre. The construction of the city was made fundamentally using local stone, from different quarries, endowing it with notable buildings and requiring a strong contribution from the local elites. This study presents data on the concentration of Alternaria spores in the atmosphere of the northwestern Iberian Peninsula. A non-viable volumetric method was used to collect the samples, resulting in a database of 70 annual. When the annual averages for each locality are calculated, Ourense stands out with 2152 spores/m3, followed by Vigo and Lugo, while Santiago de Compostela recorded the lowest concentrations. Focusing on the total data for each locality, the main sporulation period started in May and ended in October in all localities, centered on a single phase, with an earlier onset and longer duration in Ourense and Vigo. The number of days with concentrations in excess of 100 spores/m3 was very low in Santiago de Compostela, Ourense, and Vigo and null in Lugo. Temperature was the meteorological parameter for which the highest statistical correlation was obtained in all locations, being favorable to the concentration of spores in the air. Temperature ranges favorable to the presence of airborne spores in the study area ranged from 25.5 to 31.2 °C. Based on the analysis of the data collected, it is concluded that Alternaria spore concentrations are low throughout most of the year. Full article

Idunella spinifera (Dauvin and Gentil, 1983) (Crustacea: Amphipoda: Liljeborgiidae) is reported for the first time after the original description that was based on one immature female. Specimens were collected in the Ría de Muros (NW Iberian Peninsula) during the course of a study on macrofauna diversity in shallow sublittoral biogenic sands along a one-year period. Despite the fact that the first red tide reported on the coasts of the Iberian Peninsula was due to Lingulodinium polyedra, knowledge about their frequency and, particularly, about the environmental conditions contributing to bloom initiation is still scarce. For this reason, L. polyedra bloom episodes were observed and studied in three Galician rias during the summer season based on the 1993–2008 record database period; additionally, samples were collected in summer 2008. Proliferations of L. polyedra occurred in the rias of Ares and Barqueiro in June and August, respectively, while in the Ria of Coruña, they persisted from the end of June to early September. Red tides developed when the surface temperature reached 17 °C, with “seasonal thermal window” conditions, and when salinities were ≥30, i.e., an “optimal salinity window”; when these parameters were lower than these thresholds, cyst germination decreased. A cyst transport mechanism from sediments to the surface must also exist; this mechanism was found to be natural (tidal currents) in the ria of Barqueiro or anthropogenic (dredging) in the rias of Ares and Coruña. Surface temperatures during summer were usually favorable for cyst germination (85 to 100%) during the 1993–2008 period; however, water temperatures below 10 m depth only rarely reached the 17 °C threshold (2 to 18%). During this 16-year period, dredging activities could explain 71% (Coruña) and 44% (Ares) of the recorded bloom events. When a bloom episode developed in early summer, favorable conditions did not lead to a new red tide, probably due to the lag period required by cysts for germination. Moreover, blooms did not develop when high densities of diatoms (>1,000,000 cells·L−1) remained in the water column as a result of summer upwelling pulses occurring in specific years. The temperature–sediment disturbance pattern found in this study provides a useful tool for the prevention of eventual risks resulting from red tides of this dinoflagellate. Full article

Paralytic shellfish poisoning is an important concern for mollusk fisheries, aquaculture, and public health. In Galicia, NW Iberian Peninsula, such toxicity has been monitored for a long time using mouse bioassay. Therefore, little information exists about the precise toxin analogues and their possible transformations in diverse mollusk species and environments. After the change in the European PSP reference method, a refinement of the Lawrence method was developed, achieving a 75% reduction in chromatogram run time. Since the beginning of 2021, when this refinement Lawrence method was accredited under the norm UNE-EN ISO/IEC 17025, it has been used in the area to determine the toxin profiles and to estimate PSP toxicity in more than 4500 samples. In this study, we have summarized three years of monitoring results, including interspecific, seasonal, and geographical variability of PSP toxicity and toxin profile. PSP was detected in more than half of the samples analyzed (55%), but only 4.4% of the determinations were above the EU regulatory limit. GTX1,4 was the pair of STX analogs that produced the highest toxicities, but GTX2,3 was found in most samples, mainly due to the reduction of GTX1,4 but also by the higher sensitivity of the method for this pair of analogs. STX seems to be mainly a product of biotransformation from GTX2,3. The studied species (twelve bivalves and one gastropod) accumulated and transformed PSP toxins to a different extent, with most of them showing similar profiles except for Spisula solida and Haliotis tuberculata. Two seasonal peaks of toxicity were found: one in spring-early summer and another in autumn, with slightly different toxin profiles during outbreaks in relation to the toxicity during valleys. In general, both the total toxicity and toxin profiles of the southernmost locations were different from those in the northern part of the Atlantic coast and the Cantabrian Sea, but this general pattern is modified by the PSP history of some specific locations. Beaches are among the habitats most frequented by migratory birds for breeding and/or wintering. However, threats such as human pressure and sea level rise can reduce the availability of these habitats for different species. The presence of alternative areas, such as salt pans and brackish habitats, is essential for many migratory shorebird populations. This study addresses the post-breeding dispersal of the Kentish plover (Charadrius alexandrinus) in the Iberian Peninsula by analysing C and N isotopes in feathers. The study was conducted at six locations along the Iberian coast, which were categorized into three areas: the NW Atlantic coast, the Atlantic coast of Andalusia, and the Mediterranean coast. Although linear mixed models did not reveal any significant effects of sex or coastal area on isotopic levels, the variability in the data suggests different habitat-use strategies in the post-reproductive period. Isotopic levels in birds from the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula exhibit greater fidelity to a single habitat type, while those from the Mediterranean coast and the Atlantic coast of Andalusia show greater variability, indicating different individual dispersal strategies. The lack of alternative habitats for the northwest Iberian population, the reduction in available habitat due to rising sea levels, and human pressure together pose a serious threat to the survival of this species, already with an unfavourable conservation status. Pseudo-nitzschia spp. blooms are a recurrent problem in many coastal areas globally, imposing some significant threats to the health of humans, ecosystems and the economy. Monitoring programmes have been established, where feasible, to mitigate the impacts caused by Pseudo-nitzschia spp. and other harmful algae blooms. The detection of such blooms from satellite data could really provide timely information on emerging risks but the development of taxa-specific algorithms from available multispectral data is still challenged by coupled optical properties with other taxa and water constituents, availability of ground data and generalisation capabilities of algorithms. Here, we developed a new set of algorithms (PNOI) for the detection and monitoring of Pseudo-nitzschia spp. blooms over the Galician coast (NW Iberian Peninsula) from Sentinel-3 OLCI reflectances using a support vector machine (SVM). Our algorithm was trained and tested with reflectance data from 260 OLCI images and 4607 Pseudo-nitzschia spp. match up data points, of which 2171 were of high quality. The performance of the no bloom/bloom model in the independent test set was robust, showing values of 0.80, 0.72 and 0.79 for the area under the curve (AUC), sensitivity and specificity, respectively. Similar results were obtained by our below detection limit/presence model. We also present different model thresholds based on optimisation of true skill statistic (TSS) and F1-score. PNOI outperforms linear models, while its relationship with in situ chlorophyll-a concentrations is weak, demonstrating a poor correlation with the phytoplankton abundance. We showcase the importance of the PNOI algorithm and OLCI sensor for monitoring the bloom evolution between the weekly ground sampling and during periods of ground data absence, such as due to COVID-19. Sediment compositions and enrichment patterns are investigated in an urban reach of a bedrock river, the Miño River passing through Ourense City, Spain. This study focuses on the trace element distribution in different fractions to gain insights into trace element enrichment. To assess enrichment, a context-specific approach was employed, based on the mean, the standard deviation of the estimated background, and the empirical rule, avoiding the pitfalls of general and arbitrary thresholds. Notably, the <0.063 mm and <2 mm fractions showed differential accumulation patterns. Both fractions serve to detect enrichments that can be indicative of contamination, but they measure different things, the maturity of sediments and postdepositional processes being key factors in understanding the sediment composition and enrichments. These findings also highlight the role of rock cavities, particularly those hosting permanent deposits, as traps for trace elements and their potential significance in assessing environmental enrichment. This work contributes to understanding sediment compositions and enrichment dynamics in bedrock rivers. It also underscores the significance of considering site-specific approaches for enrichment assessment and the necessity for further research to unravel the mechanisms driving differential accumulation within distinct depositional environments. This building exhibits a set of particularities that confirms its archeological importance. It is a construction dating from the middle of the 1st century AD, subject to two reforms, one in the second half of the 1st century AD and another in the 2nd century AD, with a trapezoidal shape and comprising ten rectangular tanks rendered with opus signinum mortars. It shows a unique architectural configuration in the city, as well as in the Portuguese territory, and the space is under musealization, together with a set of graves identified in the same archeological intervention. The present investigation contextualizes the funerary and religious architecture of the city. Its description is presented, highlighting its relevance, and an interpretative possibility is formulated. Full article

Pleistocene Glaciations of the Northwest of Iberia: Glacial Maximum Extent, Ice Thickness, and ELA of the Soajo Mountain

Soajo Mountain is located in the northwestern Iberian Peninsula near the border between Portugal and Spain. Its highest elevation is 1416 m at the Pedrada summit. During the Pleistocene, the cascade cirques on the east flank and the icefield that covered the flattened surface of the high plateau generated several glacier valleys. This study presents a paleoglacial reconstruction of the relict glacial landscape in Soajo Mountain for the Glacial Maximum Extent (GME) through the following methods: (1) a detailed geomorphological map supported by high-resolution orthophotography, digital elevation models with a spatial resolution of 70 cm, and field surveys; (2) the delineation of the glacial surface, and the calculation of the glacial flowlines to obtain the numerical model of the ice thickness; and (3) an estimation of the paleoELA altitudes. The paleoglacial reconstruction, using GlaRe methodology, reveals a glacial surface of 16 km2, including an icefield on the Lamas de Vez plateau (mean elevation of 1150 m) and a radial glacial flow to the east and north. The arrangement of the glaciated area attests to the topographic, lithological, and structural conditioning on the development of small glacial tongues, with an emphasis on the ice tongue flowing northwards, with a thickness of 173 m and a length of 2.92 km. The Soajo GME paleoglacier comprises three main glacial sectors: Lamas de Vez Icefield, Vez and Aveleira Valleys, and the Eastern Glacial Sector. These paleoglaciers have achieved maximum ice volumes of 214.4 hm3, 269.2 hm3, and 115.8 hm3, respectively, with maximum ice thicknesses of 127 m, 173 m, and 118 m, respectively. On the west flank, a smaller paleoglacier named Branda da Gémea recorded an ice volume of 24.3 hm3 and a maximum ice thickness of 110 m. According to the ELA-AABR method, Soajo Mountain has one of the lowest ELA values in the Iberian NW, ranging from 1085 to 1057 m. This is due to its oceanic location, an orographic barrier effect, and the influence of the polar front. Full article

Artificial substrates have been implemented to overcome the problems associated with quantitative sampling of marine epifaunal assemblages. These substrates provide artificial habitats that mimic natural habitat features, thereby standardizing the sampling effort and enabling direct comparisons among different sites and studies. This paper explores the potential of the “Artificial Seaweed Monitoring System” (ASMS) sampling methodology to evaluate the natural variability of assemblages along a coastline of more than 200 km, by describing the succession of the ASMS’ associated macrofauna at two Rías of the Galician Coast (NW Iberian Peninsula) after 3, 6, 9, and 12 months after deployment. The results show that macrofauna assemblages harbored by ASMS differ between locations for every type of data. The results also support the hypothesis that succession in benthic communities is not a linear process, but rather a mixture of different successional stages. The use of the ASMS is proved to be a successful standard monitoring methodology, as it is sensitive to scale-dependent patterns and captures the temporal variability of macrobenthic assemblages. Hence, the ASMS can serve as a replicable approach contributing to the “Good Environmental Status” assessment through non-destructive monitoring programs based on benthic marine macrofauna monitoring, capturing the variability in representative assemblages as long as sampling deployment periods are standard.
