Cognitive flexibility, the ability to adapt behavior to changing environmental demands, is a core deficit in schizophrenia (SZ), that predicts disease progression. This review synthesizes findings on the neural substates of cognitive flexibility by using a framework that distinguishes animal model tasks by their motivational valence: aversive versus appetitive. While human studies using tasks like the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST) reveal significant cognitive inflexibility in SZ, particularly in set shifting, rodent models provide important mechanistic insights. The current literature suggests that aversive tasks, such as water mazes, and appetitive tasks, such as the Birrel–Brown discrimination task, engage distinct neural circuits, despite assessing supposedly similar cognitive processes. Aversive paradigms primarily rely on hippocampal–medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) pathways, whereas appetitive tasks heavily involve orbitofrontal cortex (OFC)–striatal circuits, with significant modulation by dopamine and serotonin. Both valences seem to require an intact balance of glutamate and GABA transmission within prefrontal regions. This framework helps clarify inconsistencies in the literature and underscores how motivational context shapes the neural substrates of cognitive flexibility. Full article

Background/Objectives: Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) have gained popularity among young adults globally, but only limited research exists on usage patterns in Saudi Arabia. This study investigated the prevalence, patterns, and factors associated with e-cigarette use initiation and transition to cigarette smoking among university students in Saudi Arabia. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 537 university students in Al-Madinah city during the 2024–2025 academic year. Data were collected using a self-administered online questionnaire assessing e-cigarette use patterns, motivations, susceptibility to future cigarette smoking, and demographic characteristics. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to identify factors associated with e-cigarette use. Results: E-cigarette prevalence was substantial: 11.7% of participants were current users, 5.4% were former users, and 27.9% were ever-users, compared with 5.8% current cigarette smokers. Males had significantly higher use rates than females (20.9% vs. 4.6%; p < 0.001). Senior students showed the highest current use (21.1%). Among ever-users, the primary motivations were enjoyment (29.3%), the possibility of use where smoking is banned (26.1%), and social acceptability (21.7%). Most users (73.0%) used high-nicotine liquids (≥20 mg/mL), and 55.4% vaped daily. Multivariable logistic regression revealed that e-cigarette use was independently associated with male gender (adjusted OR = 4.0), higher academic year (OR = 1.24), current smoking (adjusted OR = 3.45; 95 CI: 1.54–7.82), and lower harm perception (adjusted OR = 1.69; 95 CI: 1.16–2.51). Susceptibility to future cigarette smoking was 18.9% overall but much higher among current e-cigarette smokers (59.5%; p < 0.001). Conclusions: E-cigarette use was prevalent among Saudi university students, particularly males and senior students, with patterns suggestive of nicotine dependence. Strong associations with cigarette smoking and high-concentration nicotine use raise concerns about dual use and addiction potential. Full article

Motivated by task-oriented semantic communication and distributed learning systems, this paper studies a distributed indirect source coding problem where M correlated sources are independently encoded for a central decoder. The decoder has access to correlated side information in addition to the messages received from the encoders and aims to recover a latent random variable under a given distortion constraint rather than recovering the sources themselves. We characterize the exact rate-distortion function for the case where the sources are conditionally independent given the side information. Furthermore, we develop a distributed Blahut–Arimoto (BA) algorithm to numerically compute the rate-distortion function. Numerical examples are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach in calculating the rate-distortion region. Full article

The overuse of nonrenewable resources has motivated intensive research and the development of new types of green bio-based and degradable feedstocks derived from natural sources, such as cellulose derivates, also in nanoforms. The inclusion of such nanoparticles in bio-based polymers with the aim of providing reinforcement is a trend, which, when associated with the incorporation active compounds, creates active packaging suitable for the packaging of highly perishable food, thus contributing to the product’s shelf-life extension. Chitosan (Ch)/sage essential oil (SEO) bionanocomposite reinforced with nanocrystalline cellulose (CNC) was cast as active packaging for the preservation of fresh poultry meat. Meat samples were wrapped in different bioplastics (pristine chitosan, chitosan with commercial CNC, chitosan with CNC obtained from three different lignocellulosic crops, giant reed (G), kenaf (K), and miscanthus (M), chitosan with SEO, and chitosan with SEO and CNC), while unwrapped samples were tested as the control. Periodically, samples were evaluated in terms of their physicochemical properties and microbial growth. Additionally, bionanocomposites were also evaluated in terms of their in situ antimicrobial properties, as well as migration toward food simulants. Meat samples protected with bionanocomposites showed lower levels of microbiological growth (2–3 logs lower than control) and lipid oxidation (20–30% lower than in control), over time. This was attributed to the intrinsic antimicrobial capacity of chitosan and the high oxygen barrier properties of the films resulting from the CNC inclusion. The SEO incorporation did not significantly improve the material’s antimicrobial and antioxidant activity yet interfered directly with the meat’s color as it migrated to its surface. In the in vitro assays, all bionanocomposites demonstrated good antimicrobial activity against B. cereus (reduction of ~8.2 log) and Salmonella Choleraesuis (reduction of ~5–6 log). Through the in vitro migration assay, it was verified that the SEO release rate of phenolic compounds to ethanol 50% (dairy products simulate) was higher than to ethanol 95% (fatty food simulate). Furthermore, these migration tests proved that nanocellulose was capable of delaying SEO migration, thus reducing the negative effect on the meat’s color and the pro-oxidant activity recorded in TBARS. It was concluded that the tested chitosan/nanocellulose bionanocomposites increased the shelf life of fresh poultry meat. Full article

Most research on domestic dog (Canis familiaris) behavior has focused on pets with restricted movement. However, free-ranging dogs exist in diverse cultural contexts globally, and their interactions with humans are less understood. Tourists can facilitate unrestricted dog movement into wilderness areas, where they may negatively impact wildlife. This study investigated which stimuli—namely, voice, touch, or food—along with inherent factors (age, sex, sociability) motivate free-ranging dogs to follow a human stranger. We measured the distance (up to 600 m) of 129 free-ranging owned and stray dogs from three villages in southern Chile as they followed an experimenter who presented them one of the above stimuli or none (control). To evaluate the effect of dog sociability (i.e., positive versus stress-related or passive behaviors), we performed a 30 s socialization test (standing near the dog without interacting) before presenting a 10 s stimulus twice. We also tracked whether the dog was in the company of other dogs. Each focus dog was video-recorded and tested up to three times over five days. Generalized linear mixed-effects models revealed that the food stimulus significantly influenced dogs’ motivation to follow a stranger, as well as a high proportion of sociable behaviors directed towards humans and the company of other dogs present during the experiment. Juveniles tended to follow a stranger more than adults or seniors, but no effects were found for the dog’s sex, whether an owner was present, the repetition of trials, the location where the study was performed, or for individuals as a random variable. This research highlights that sociability as an inherent factor shapes dog–stranger interactions in free-ranging dogs when food is given. In the context of wildlife conservation, we recommend that managers promote awareness among local communities and tourists to avoid feeding dogs, especially in the context of outdoor activities close to wilderness. Objective: Considering the absence of research testing the entire sequence of passion, behavioral regulation, and subjective well-being (SWB), this study aimed to analyze the hypothetical causal relationships between the variables of a model that integrates the Dualistic Passion Model (DMP) and Self-Determination Theory (SDT) in order to understand the impact of harmonious passion (HP) and obsessive passion (OP) and the regulation of motivation on the SWB of elite athletes with disability. Method: This study includes 143 elite athletes from national adapted sports (36 female; 107 male) aged between 15 and 59 (M = 29.21; SD = 10.45). Weekly training sessions ranged from 1 to 12 (M = 4.52; SD = 2.71), and the years of competitive practice ranged from 1 to 28 (M = 5.55; SD = 6.98). Data were collected using valid and reliable questionnaires for the study population and analyzed using structural equation analysis. The following results were identified: a positive and a significant effect between OP and self-determination motivation (SDM); a positive but not a significant effect between OP and non-self-determination motivation (NSDM); a significant effect between SDM and SWL and SDM and positive affect (PA); and, finally, a positive but non-significant effect between SDM and negative affect (NA). In contrast, there is a positive and significant effect between HP and SDM; a negative and significant effect between HP and NSDM; a positive but non-significant effect between NSDM and SWL; a negative and significant effect between NSDM and PA; and, finally, a positive and significant effect between NSDM and NA. Conclusions: The perception of passion regarding sport can be a positive predictor of SDM, which, in turn, can influence levels of SWB, both from a cognitive point of view (SWL) and from an emotional point of view (PA). This reinforces the positive effect of the self-determination behavior in adapted sport on SWB and its contribution to health and quality of life in people with disabilities. Full article

The study is motivated by the application of dry finish milling for post-build processing of additive Ti6Al4V blanks, since the use of neither lubricant nor coolants has been attracting increasing attention due to its environmental benefits, non-toxicity, and the elimination of the need for additional cleaning processes. For end mills, wear patterns were investigated upon finish milling of the SLM Ti6Al4V samples under various machining conditions (by varying the values of radial depth of cut and feed values at a constant level of axial depth of cut and cutting speed). When using all the applied milling modes, the identical tool wear mechanism was revealed. Built-up edges mainly developed on the leading surfaces, increasing the surface roughness on the SLM Ti6Al4V samples but protecting the cutting edges. However, abrasive wear was mainly characteristic of the flank surfaces that accelerated peeling of the protective coatings and increased wear of the end mills. The following milling parameters have been established as being close to rational ones: Vc = 60 m/min, Vf = 400 mm/min, ap = 4 mm, and ae = 0.4 mm. They affected the surface roughness of the SLM Ti6Al4V samples in the following way: max cutting thickness—8 μm; built-up edge at rake surface—50 ± 3 μm; max wear of flank surface—15 ± 1 μm; maximum adherence of workpiece. Mode III provided the maximum MRR value and negligible wear of the end mill, but its main disadvantage was the high average surface roughness on the SLM Ti6Al4V sample. Mode II was characterized by both the lowest average surface roughness and the lowest wear of the end mill, as well as an insufficient MRR value. Since these two modes differed only in their feed rates, their values should be optimized in the range from 200 to 400 mm/min. Full article

The logistics industry faces challenges from evolving consumer expectations, technological advances, sustainability demands, and market disruptions. Logistics collaboration is in theory perceived as one of the most promising solutions to solve these issues, but here are still a lot of challenges that needs to be better understood and addressed. While vertical collaboration among supply chain actors is well advanced, horizontal collaboration among competing service providers remains under-explored. This study developed a novel methodology based on the COM-B behaviour-change framework to better understand the main challenges, opportunities, capabilities and drivers that would motivate competing companies to exploit the potential of horizontal logistics collaboration. A survey was designed and conducted among 71 logistics service providers in Slovenia, chosen for its fragmented market and low willingness to collaborate. Statistical analysis reveals cost reduction (M = 4.21/5) and improved vehicle utilization (M = 4.29/5) as the primary motivators. On the other hand, maintaining company reputation (M = 4.64/5), fair resource sharing (M = 4.20/5), and transparency of logistics processes (M = 4.17/5) all persist as key enabling conditions. These findings underscore the pivotal role of behavioural drivers and suggest strategies that combine economic incentives with targeted trust-building measures. Future research should employ experimental designs in diverse national contexts and integrate vertical–horizontal approaches to validate causal pathways and advance theory. Full article

Balancing Profitability and Sustainability in Electric Vehicles Insurance: Underwriting Strategies for Affordable and Premium Models

This study aims to develop an optimal underwriting strategy for affordable (H1 and M1) and premium (L1 and M2) electric vehicles (EVs), balancing financial risk and sustainability commitments. The research is motivated by regulatory pressures, risk management needs, and sustainability goals, necessitating an adaptation of traditional underwriting models. The study employs a modified Delphi method with industry experts to identify key risk factors, including accident risk, repair costs, battery safety, driver behavior, and PCAF carbon impact. A sensitivity analysis was conducted to examine premium adjustments under different risk scenarios, categorizing EVs into four risk segments: Low-Risk, Low-Carbon (L1); Medium-Risk, Low-Carbon (M1); Medium-Risk, High-Carbon (M2); and High-Risk, High-Carbon (H1). Findings indicate that premium EVs (L1 and M2) exhibit lower volatility in underwriting costs, benefiting from advanced safety features, lower accident rates, and reduced carbon attribution penalties. Conversely, budget EVs (H1 and M1) experience higher premium fluctuations due to greater accident risks, costly repairs, and higher carbon costs under PCAF implementation. The worst-case scenario showed a 14.5% premium increase, while the best-case scenario led to a 10.5% premium reduction. The study recommends prioritizing premium EVs for insurance coverage due to their lower underwriting risks and carbon efficiency. For budget EVs, insurers should implement selective underwriting based on safety features, driver risk profiling, and energy efficiency. Additionally, incentive-based pricing such as telematics discounts, green repair incentives, and low-carbon charging rewards can mitigate financial risks and align with net-zero insurance commitments. This research provides a structured framework for insurers to optimize EV underwriting while ensuring long-term profitability and regulatory compliance. Full article

Participation in organized sport is widely encouraged for youth development, yet positive outcomes are not guaranteed. Parents play a pivotal role in shaping young athletes’ experiences, requiring emotional support, interpersonal skills, and self-regulation. This study examines the meanings parents attribute to their children’s sports participation and how young athletes construct their experiences under parental and coaching influences. An interpretive phenomenological methodology involved semi-structured interviews with coaches, focus groups with parents, and open-ended questionnaires to young athletes. Seventeen players (M = 11.2 years, SD = 0.59), nineteen parents (M = 47.6 years, SD = 3.61), and two coaches from the same football club volunteered to participate in the study. Participants were selected through purposive sampling to ensure a homogeneous experience. The findings reveal that parental involvement balances support and pressure, while trust-building between parents and coaches significantly impacts the athletes’ experiences. The evolving role of technology and the importance of social dynamics within teams also emerged as critical factors. Intrinsic motivation, fostering emotional bonding through the sport, and adopting a developmental rather than purely competitive framework were emphasized factors identified as supporting positive youth sport experiences. These findings offer insights into how interconnected relationships among parents, coaches, and athletes influence children’s sports engagement and development. Full article

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a prevalent disorder linked to metabolic complications such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease. By fragmenting normal sleep architecture, OSA perturbs the growth hormone/insulin-like growth factor (GH/IGF) axis and alters circulating levels of IGF-binding proteins (IGFBPs). A prior clinical observation of elevated IGFBP4 in OSA patients motivated the present investigation in a controlled animal model. Building on the previously reported protocol, OSA was induced in male C57BL/6 mice (9–12 weeks old) through intralingual injection of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), producing tongue hypertrophy, intermittent airway obstruction, and hypoxemia. After 8–10 weeks, the study assessed (1) hypoxia biomarkers—including HIF-1α and VEGF expression—and (2) neurobehavioral outcomes in anxiety and cognition using the open-field and novel object recognition tests. PTFE-treated mice exhibited a significant increase in circulating IGFBP4 versus both baseline and control groups. Hepatic Igfbp4 mRNA was also upregulated. Behaviorally, PTFE mice displayed heightened anxiety-like behavior and impaired novel object recognition, paralleling cognitive deficits reported in human OSA. These findings validate the PTFE-induced model as a tool for studying OSA-related hypoxia and neurocognitive dysfunction, and they underscore IGFBP4 as a promising biomarker and potential mediator of OSA’s systemic effects. Mapping Wetlands with High-Resolution Planet SuperDove Satellite Imagery: An Assessment of Machine Learning Models Across the Diverse Waterscapes of New Zealand

(1) Background: Wetlands are ecologically significant ecosystems that support biodiversity and contribute to essential environmental functions such as water purification, carbon storage and flood regulation. However, these ecosystems face increasing pressures from land-use change and degradation, prompting the need for scalable and accurate classification methods to support conservation and policy efforts. In this research, our motivation was to test whether high-spatial-resolution PlanetScope imagery can be used with pixel-based machine learning to support the mapping and monitoring of wetlands at a national scale. (2) Methods: This study compared four machine learning classification models—Random Forest (RF), XGBoost (XGB), Histogram-Based Gradient Boosting (HGB) and a Multi-Layer Perceptron Classifier (MLPC)—to detect and map wetland areas across New Zealand. All models were trained using eight-band SuperDove satellite imagery from PlanetScope, with a spatial resolution of ~3 m, and ancillary geospatial datasets representing topography and soil drainage characteristics, each of which is available globally. (3) Results: All four machine learning models performed well in detecting wetlands from SuperDove imagery and environmental covariates, with varying strengths. The highest accuracy was achieved using all eight image bands alongside features created from supporting geospatial data. For binary wetland classification, the highest F1 scores were recorded by XGB (0.73) and RF/HGB (both 0.72) when including all covariates. MLPC also showed competitive performance (wetland F1 score of 0.71), despite its relatively lower spatial consistency. However, each model over-predicts total wetland area at a national level, an issue which was able to be reduced by increasing the classification probability threshold and spatial filtering. (4) Conclusions: The comparative analysis highlights the strengths and trade-offs of RF, XGB, HGB and MLPC models for wetland classification. While all four methods are viable, RF offers some key advantages, including ease of deployment and transferability, positioning it as a promising candidate for scalable, high-resolution wetland monitoring across diverse ecological settings. Further work is required for verification of small-scale wetlands (<~0.5 ha) and the addition of fine-spatial-scale covariates. Full article

Linear Dependence of Sublimation Enthalpy on Young’s Elastic Modulus: Implications for Thermodynamics of Solids

Classical thermodynamics omits rigidity, which property distinguishes solids from gases and liquids. By accounting for rigidity (i.e., Young’s elastic modulus, ϒ), we recently amended historical formulae and moreover linked heat capacity, thermal expansivity, and ϒ. Further exploration is motivation by the importance of classical thermodynamics to various applied sciences. Based on heat performing work, we show here, theoretically, that density times sublimation enthalpy divided by the molar mass (ρΔHsub/M, energy per volume), depends linearly on ϒ (1 GPa = 109 J m−3). Data on diverse metals, non-metallic elements, chalcogenides, simple oxides, alkali halides, and fluorides with cubic structures validate this relationship at ambient conditions. Furthermore, data on hcp metals and molecular solids show that ρΔHsub/M is proportional to ϒ for anisotropic materials. Proportionality constants vary only from 0.1 to 0.7 among these different material types (>100 substances), which shows that the elastic energy reservoir of solids is large. Proportionality constants depend on whether molecules or atoms are sublimated and are somewhat affected by structure. We show that ductility of refractory, high-ϒ metals affect high-temperature determinations of their ΔHsub. Our results provide information on sublimation processes and subsequent gas phase reactions, while showing that elasticity of solids is the key parameter needed to assessing their energetics. From Values to Action: The Roles of Green Self-Identity, Self-Efficacy, and Eco-Anxiety in Predicting Pro-Environmental Behaviours in the Italian Context

Background: Human activity is recognised as a major contributor to changes in Earth’s climate, land surface, oceans, ecosystems, and biodiversity. These alterations are largely due to greenhouse gas emissions, deforestation, mass pollution, and land degradation. In light of these environmental challenges, examining the psychological determinants of pro-environmental behaviour has become increasingly important. Study’s Aim: To provide a comprehensive model evaluating the structural relationships among biospheric values, green self-identity, green self-efficacy, and eco-anxiety to investigate the underlying mechanisms relating to the adoption of various pro-environmental behaviours (PEBs). Methods: An online self-report questionnaire was completed by 510 Italian participants (aged 18–55, M = 35.18, SD = 12.58) between November and December 2023. Data analysis was performed using R statistical software, employing Structural Equation Modelling. Results: The results indicate that eco-anxiety, green self-efficacy, and green self-identity are significant positive predictors of PEBs. Furthermore, green self-identity significantly influences eco-anxiety and green self-efficacy, while biospheric values are a major trigger for both green self-efficacy and green self-identity, but not for eco-anxiety. Conclusions: These findings suggest that while eco-anxiety can be an adaptive motivator for PEBs, biospheric values foster a green self-identity and self-efficacy, which in turn drive pro-environmental actions. The study concludes that encouraging biospheric values and strong green self-identity is crucial for promoting sustainable behaviours. Full article

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), launched by the United Nations in 2015, outline 17 interconnected objectives designed to promote human well-being and sustainable development worldwide. Education is recognized by the United Nations as a key factor in promoting sustainable development. To cultivate students with both global perspectives and local engagement, it is essential to integrate sustainability education into elementary curricula. Accordingly, this study aimed to enhance elementary school students’ understanding of the SDGs by designing a structured instructional activity and developing a hybrid digital-physical board game. The game was implemented as a supplementary review tool to traditional classroom teaching, leveraging the motivational and knowledge-retention benefits of physical board games while incorporating digital features to support learning process monitoring. To address the limitations of conventional review approaches—such as reduced student engagement and increased cognitive load—the instructional model incorporated the board game during review sessions following formal instruction. This was intended to maintain student attention and reduce unnecessary cognitive effort, thereby supporting learning in sustainability-related content. A quasi-experimental design was employed to evaluate the effectiveness of the instructional intervention and the board game system, focusing on three outcome variables: learning motivation, cognitive load, and learning achievement. The results indicated that students in the game-based Sustainable Development Goals group achieved significantly higher delayed posttest scores (M = 72.91, SD = 15.17) than the traditional review group (M = 61.30, SD = 22.82; p < 0.05). In addition, they reported significantly higher learning motivation (M = 4.40, SD = 0.64) compared to the traditional group (M = 3.99, SD = 0.69; p < 0.05) and lower cognitive load (M = 1.84, SD = 1.39) compared to the traditional group (M = 2.66, SD = 1.30; p < 0.05), suggesting that the proposed approach effectively supported student learning in sustainability education at the elementary level.
