Baltimore’s historic row-home neighborhoods face escalating risks to energy, heat, and durability under intensifying climate stress. This study develops a Housing-Performance Atlas that quantifies multi-hazard performance for eight representative archetypes using DesignBuilder/EnergyPlus Version 7.3.1.003, under Baltimore TMY3 boundary conditions. Performance is evaluated across the following four adaptation domains: energy use intensity, passive survivability during 72 h outage events, roof overheating exposure (>150 °F exceedance hours), and material service life derived from ISO 15686 and synthesized into Lean and Full Deficit Indices for comparative resilience ranking. Results show that EUI ranged from 46.7 to 67.6 kBtu ft−2·yr−1, survivability from 0 to 23 h, and roof temperatures exceeded 150 °F for 150–210 h, shortening roof service life by up to 10 years. Composite Lean and Full Deficit Indices ranged 7.8–92.4, ranking Model 5 (end-unit, flat roof, two-story with basement) as the most resilient configuration and Model 8 (end-unit, pitched roof, three-story above-grade) as the least resilient due to compounded overheating and energy losses. Heat-related domains accounted for nearly 70% of overall resilience deficits, confirming thermal safety and roof reflectivity as retrofit priorities. The Housing-Performance Atlas establishes a reproducible diagnostic framework linking simulation, service life, and resilience metrics to guide cost-effective, climate-responsive retrofits in Baltimore’s aging urban housing stock. Enterprises play a key role in achieving sustainable development goals because they affect them to a greater or lesser extent, both in a positive and negative way. The aim of the study presented in the article is to answer the question concerning the level of application of the best practices in enterprises related to the implementation of sustainable development strategy. As recognized means of operational activities in organizations, they are a guarantee of the effective achievement of their goals. The method employed in the research procedure was the Human Lean Green method. Thus, best practices applied in the enterprises analyzed became the basis for measuring their organizational maturity in three areas of sustainable development, i.e., social (Human), economic (Lean) and environmental (Green). The study was conducted in 20 enterprises (manufacturing or service enterprises). The results of the research show, among others, that the popularity of using practices from the Human area is greater than Lean Green practices. Full article

How individuals and organizations interface with the digital economy has been largely influenced by transformations ushered in on the global financial map by the rapidly expanding Financial Technology (FinTech). This paper seeks to shed light on the successes of FinTech, namely on how it contributed to sustainability through financial inclusion, reduction in reliance on cash and the promotion of an innovation-driven economy known for being paperless. Based on contributions from students at Taif University in Saudi Arabia, determinants of FinTech adoption intentions are analyzed using data from n = 544. Our study focuses on evaluating the effects of financial, technical and external factors on adoption behavior by using a two-prong approach: first, we use the DeLone and McLean IS Success Model; then we employ a Second-Order Construct using Structural Equation Modelling (SEM). The results indicated that the strongest effects on attitudes stem from technical factors—information, system and service quality. Additionally, they also show that adoption intention is considerably shaped by financial as well as external dimensions. The Saudi Vision 2030 has set national goals of digital transformation, financial inclusion and human capital empowerment. This study provides a modest contribution to those goals by fostering FinTech adoption among the youth. Furthermore, its findings also offer educators, policymakers and Fintech providers a platform to enhance literacy, strengthen trust and develop sustainable digital finance ecosystems in line with the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 objectives. Background: This study deploys the Lean Six Sigma DMAIC framework to achieve systemic optimization of the school subscription process in Tunisia’s public transport service, a critical administrative operation affecting efficiency and customer satisfaction across the urban mobility network. Methods: Beyond conventional applications, the research integrates advanced analytical and process engineering tools, including capability indices, measurement system analysis (MSA), variance decomposition, and root-cause prioritization through Pareto–ANOVA integration, supported by a structured control plan aligned with ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 31000:2018 risk-management standards. Results: Quantitative diagnosis revealed severe process instability and nonconformities in information flow, workload balancing, and suboptimal resource allocation that constrained effective capacity utilization. Corrective interventions were modeled and validated through statistical control and real-time performance dashboards to institutionalize improvements and sustain process stability. The implemented actions led to a 37.5% reduction in cycle time, an 80% decrease in process errors, a 38.5% increase in customer satisfaction, and a 38.9% improvement in throughput. Conclusions: This study contributes theoretically by positioning Lean Six Sigma as a data-centric governance framework for stochastic capacity optimization and process redesign in public service systems, and practically by providing a replicable, evidence-based roadmap for operational excellence in governmental organizations within developing economies. This study implemented a Lean Six Sigma (LSS) methodology to enhance the productivity of the mechanical and industrial engineering technology workshops of an international higher education institution. The efficiency and effectiveness of the engineering workshops were often compromised by poor housekeeping and operational practices, which resulted in incomplete tasks, long operational and activity times, disorganized tools, cluttered workspaces, and a lack of systematic processes for managing materials. These issues led to waste in the form of lost time, unnecessary movement, and safety risks. This eventually affected the overall productivity of the workshops. Following the combination of the Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control (DMAIC) methodology of Six Sigma with Lean manufacturing, the investigation was conducted in two parts. The first part of this research mainly consisted of measuring the existing state of the three workshops to map the process and frame issues and origins of variations. During the second part of this study, the focus shifted towards Lean thinking while applying the chosen Lean Six Sigma (LSS) tools. Implementation revealed several benefits in the workshops during each phase of DMAIC. A Plan–Do–Check–Act (PDCA) continuous improvement board was installed in the main workshop to promote continuous improvement and sustainability. The process capability increased for the main workshop and welding laboratory, which shows an increase in service and performance standards after LSS implementation. For the main workshop, the process capability ‘Cp’ increased from 0.33 to 1.24 and the process capability index (Cpk) increased from 0.26 to 0.99. The process capability index (Cpk) for the main workshop increased; however, it did not reach the value of 1.33 due to the computer workstation installation not being completed during the study. The welding laboratory showed an increased ‘Cp’ from 0.67 to 2.13, and the process capability index (Cpk) increased from 0.18 to 1.34. The layout of the workshop office was improved to support efficient workflow by providing easy access to frequently used resources while keeping movement paths clear, thereby minimizing interruptions and promoting productivity. As a result, machines and tools were used more productively and operation times decreased. The mechanical workshops can continue increasing their process capability by following the outcomes and findings of the current study, leading to sustainable quality, efficiency, and operational reliability improvements. The emergence of generative AI, particularly the widespread accessibility of ChatGPT, has led to challenges for higher education. The extent and manner of use are under debate. Local empirical investigations about the use and acceptance of ChatGPT contribute to effective policymaking. The study employs a specialized approach, utilizing an information system view based on the DeLone and McLean Information Systems Success Model as its theoretical framework. A survey was conducted to assess students’ opinions about ChatGPT regarding its usefulness in their studies. The model was tested using PLS-SEM with 466 Hungarian and Romanian higher education students. The model examined six constructs as information quality, system quality, service quality, use, user satisfaction, and net benefits. The results confirmed the effects of information quality and system quality on use and satisfaction, whereas service quality did not make a significant contribution. Satisfaction was found to be the key driver to use. The study contributes to a deeper understanding of AI acceptance in higher education and provides valuable considerations for policymaking. A data-oriented, task-focused policymaking is recommended over system-based regulation. Additionally, a comprehensive framework model is required for international comparisons, which combines information systems success and technology acceptance models. Full article

This study assesses De Lone and McLean’s Information System (D&M IS) Success Model concerning DAS throughout small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Saudi Arabia (SA). The present work mainly sought to evaluate the impact of information quality (IQ), system quality (SysQ), service quality (SrvQ) serving, system utilization, and user satisfaction (Usat) on the usage of the Digital Accounting System (DAS), which is posited to ultimately improve the quality of sustainable decision-making. The research utilized a quantitative methodology, employing a self-administered questionnaire to collect data from 328 decision-makers who are knowledgeable about actual DAS usage by SMEs in SA. Subsequent to gathering data, validation was conducted via Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) by utilizing smart-PLS software. The findings indicate that SysQ and IQ significantly influenced system utilization, although SrvQ did not. DAS was determined to significantly influence user happiness. Moreover, system utilization and user satisfaction positively influenced DAS, thereby affecting the sustainability of decision-making and reflecting the overall benefits of DAS. This work enhances the current IS literature by identifying the characteristics that affect the net advantages of DAS, with the suggested model evaluated in SMEs in SA utilizing DAS. This study serves as a reference to elucidate the significance of DAS and offers consequences, limitations, and prospects for further research. Full article

The Strait of Malacca faces persistent maritime safety challenges due to high vessel density and complex navigational conditions. Current risk assessment methods often lean towards treating static accident analysis and dynamic traffic modeling separately, although some nascent hybrid approaches exist. However, these hybrids frequently lack the capacity for comprehensive, real-time factor integration. This study proposes an integrated framework coupling accident hotspot identification with vessel traffic network analysis. The framework combines trajectory clustering using improved DBSCAN with directional filters, Kernel Density Estimation (KDE) for accident hotspots, and Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (FAHP) for multi-factor risk evaluation, acknowledging its subjective and region-specific nature. The model was trained and tuned exclusively on the 2023 dataset (47 incidents), reserving the 2024 incidents (24 incidents) exclusively for independent, zero-information-leakage validation. Results demonstrate superior performance: Area Under the ROC Curve (AUC) improved by 0.14 (0.78 vs. 0.64; +22% relative to KDE-only), and Precision–Recall AUC (PR-AUC) improved by 0.16 (0.65 vs. 0.49); both p < 0.001. Crucially, all model tuning and parameter finalization (including DBSCAN/Fréchet, FAHP weights, and adaptive thresholds) relied solely on 2023 data, with the 2024 incidents reserved exclusively for independent temporal validation. The model captures 75.2% of reported incidents within 20% of the study area. Cross-validation confirms stability across all folds. The framework reveals accidents concentrate at network bottlenecks where traffic centrality exceeds 0.15 and accident density surpasses 0.6. Model-based associations suggest amplification through three pathways: environmental-mediated (34%), traffic convergence (34%), and historical persistence (23%). The integrated approach enables identification of both where and why maritime accidents cluster, providing practical applications for vessel traffic services, risk-aware navigation, and evidence-based safety regulation in congested waterways. In the current economic context, organizations providing automotive repair services face significant challenges in ensuring service quality, operational efficiency, and long-term sustainability. This paper examines the importance of implementing process monitoring systems through the integration of European quality frameworks and Japanese operational principles such as Kaizen, Lean Manufacturing, and Poka-Yoke, to improve the quality of services and increase performance within automotive repair organizations. The research is grounded in Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 9—Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, and SDG 12—Responsible Consumption and Production), demonstrating how structured quality practices contribute to reducing waste, optimizing processes, and delivering responsible services. The main objectives of the study are to identify the elements that influence the performance of service-specific processes, to improve the quality management practices related to these processes, to eliminate non-conformities, and to enhance profitability and competitive differentiation through service quality assurance. A mixed-methods research design was applied, including direct participatory observation, performance monitoring, and correlational statistical analysis over a six-month period in two Romanian automotive service centers. Key performance indicators (KPIs) such as technician efficiency, rework rate, and order throughput time were collected and analyzed before and after the implementation of selected tools. Findings demonstrate measurable improvements: rework rates decreased from 7.8% to 2.6%, technician efficiency improved from 89% to 105%, and average service completion time was reduced by 1.6 days. Correlation analysis confirmed strong relationships between visual management adoption and rework reduction (r = −0.75), as well as between Lean implementation and technician efficiency (r = +0.89). The study’s novelty lies in its integration of cross-cultural quality management practices into a replicable and sustainable operational model for post-sale service environments. The results validate that implementing monitoring systems, combined with Kaizen, Lean, and Poka-Yoke, supported by visual management and active employee engagement, can lead to superior service quality management, increased customer satisfaction, and long-term organizational success in the automotive repair industry. Continuum robots with outstanding compliance, dexterity, and lean bodies are successfully applied in medicine, aerospace engineering, the nuclear industry, rescue operations, construction, service, and manipulation. However, the inherent low stiffness characteristics of continuum bodies make it challenging to develop ultra-long and small-diameter continuum robots. To address this size–scale challenge of continuum robots, we developed an 8 m long continuum robot with a diameter of 23 mm by a tip actuation and growth mechanism. Meanwhile, we also realized the untethered design of the continuum robot, which greatly increased its usable space range, portability, and mobility. Demonstration experiments prove that the developed growing continuum robot has good flexibility and manipulability, as well as the ability to cross obstacles and search for targets. Its continuum body can transport liquids over long distances, providing water, medicine, and other rescue items for trapped individuals. The functionality of an untethered growing continuum robot (UGCR) can be expanded by installing multiple tools, such as a grasping tool at its tip to pick up objects in deep wells, pits, and other scenarios. In addition, we established a static model to predict the deformation of UGCR, and the prediction error of its tip position was within 2.6% of its length. We verified the motion performance of the continuum robot through a series of tests involving workspace, disturbance resistance, collision with obstacles, and load performance, thus proving its good anti-interference ability and collision stability. The main contribution of this work is to provide a technical reference for the development of ultra-long continuum robots based on the tip actuation and steering principle. Full article

This study evaluates the degree to which small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) are prepared to adopt smart manufacturing in contrast to large enterprises, a transition that depends on the effective use of the Internet of Things, artificial intelligence (AI), and advanced analytics. While many large multinational companies have already integrated such technologies, smaller firms still struggle because of tight budgets, limited technical expertise, and difficulties in scaling new systems. To capture these realities, the investigation refines the Initiative Mittelstand-Digital für Produktionsunternehmen und Logistik-Systeme (IMPULS) Industry 4.0 readiness model, which was initially developed to help German SMEs, so that it aligns with the circumstances faced by smaller manufacturers. A thorough review of published work first surveys existing readiness and maturity frameworks, highlights their limitations, and guides the selection of new, SME-specific indicators. The framework gauges readiness across six dimensions: strategic planning and organizational design, smart factory infrastructure, lean operations, digital products, data-driven services, and workforce capability. Each dimension is operationalized through a questionnaire that offers clear benchmarks and actionable targets suited to the current resources of each enterprise. Weaving strategic vision, skill growth, and cooperative support, the approach offers managers a direct path to sharper competitiveness and lasting innovation within a changing industrial landscape. Additionally, a separate Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats (SWOT) analysis is provided for each dimension based on survey data offering decision-makers concise guidance for future investment. The proposed adaptation of the IMPULS framework, validated through empirical data from 31 SMEs, introduces a novel readiness index, diagnostic gap metrics, and actionable cluster profiles tailored to developing-country industrial ecosystems. From Pin-Up to Paragon: Maksim Gorky’s Evolving Image on Russian Picture Postcards

By the end of the nineteenth century, picture postcards had become ubiquitous not only as an inexpensive means of communication but also as objects for collection. Literary postcards were especially popular in Russia, and the rapid proliferation of cards featuring portraits of contemporary writers helped feed celebrity culture, turning those images into sought-after commodities for consumption. At the same time, celebrating Russian cultural accomplishments through picture postcards also helped shape contemporary perspectives of nation and national identity. As a rising star on the literary scene at that time, Maksim Gorky quickly became an icon of contemporary Russian youth culture and, consequently, a popular subject for picture postcards. With his floppy hair and distinctive clothing, Gorky’s image itself demonstrated his difference from established traditional norms for the profession of “writer,” and his revolutionary leanings and unconventional life challenged the dominant mores of the time. In the Soviet period, as picture postcards continued to serve this function of shaping national identity and values, Gorky’s image was frequently used on state-issued postcards, both before and after his death, but this time in service to the state as the “father of Soviet literature” (and regardless of his uneven and at times ambivalent attitude toward that state). This paper examines the evolution in the use and function of Gorky’s images on pre-revolutionary and Soviet-era postcards. As an early icon of non-conformism and liberation, Gorky’s image ironically was co-opted by the Soviet regime to serve as a symbol of political orthodoxy and conformity. Full article

Background: Age is considered an independent cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factor, but limited data exist concerning the impact of age and years in the fire service on firefighter health and physical performance. Objectives: We assessed the impact of age and years in the fire service on structural firefighter health and physical performance. Methods: 142 firefighters completed an annual clinical assessment. General linear model (GLM) multivariate and univariate analyses were performed across age groups, with years of fire service experience as a covariate. Partial Eta squared (ηp2) values for the GLM statics and Cohen’s d for pairwise comparisons were used to assess effect size. Results: GLM analyses revealed statistically significant differences (p < 0.05) for several demographic, body composition, blood biomarker, and physical performance parameters. Pairwise comparisons revealed that younger firefighters displayed more favorable health and fitness profiles than their older counterparts. Interestingly, when accounting for years of fire service experience, differences for only the following variables remained: body mass index, waist circumference, lean mass, visceral adipose tissue, triglycerides, cardiopulmonary exercise test time-to-exhaustion, and VO2max. Conclusions: These findings suggest differences in CVD risk biomarkers, physical fitness levels, and body composition metrics across age groups. However, years of fire service experience appears to have a greater impact on these variables, suggesting that firefighters’ time in the fire service may accelerate the effects of aging on these outcomes. While age-specific health interventions are recommended to manage and mitigate CVD risk effectively, there also should be consideration for the years of fire service. Full article

This study explores the perceptions of future educators, specifically Early Childhood Education students at the Universities of Cádiz and Gdansk, regarding the interconnections between critical thinking and sustainability. The work aims to provide valuable insights into general teacher training, examining how these students’ experiences are contextualized within their respective educational systems and cultural contexts. To achieve this, eleven group interviews (three in Cádiz, eight in Gdansk) were conducted using a structured and expert-validated script. The transcribed data were qualitatively analyzed using QDA MINER v.6 software. Key findings reveal divergent perceptions of critical thinking among pre-service teachers: while Spanish students leaned towards a subjective understanding, Polish students emphasized an objective, data-driven approach. This distinction has significant implications for the conceptualization and teaching of critical thinking in educator training. Despite these differences, both groups of participants highlighted the necessity of implementing active methodologies in higher education (such as cooperative learning, problem-solving, and debates) to foster critical thinking, both for their own development and for preparing for their future practice with young children. This study also identified an excessive emphasis on theoretical aspects of sustainability in these future teachers’ training and a limited understanding of their practical application in the classroom. Furthermore, explicit connections between critical thinking and sustainability were scarce in student responses, highlighting a gap in current educator training in these areas. Collectively, the results suggest significant weaknesses in current teacher training efforts regarding the development of critical thinking and its effective integration with sustainability competencies. This study aims to critically analyze the theoretical and practical contributions of recent literature on the Critical Chain Project Management (CCPM) method in multi-project environments. To this end, a systematic literature review (SLR) was conducted based on 62 studies indexed in the Scopus and Web of Science databases between 2014 and 2025. The articles were analyzed in terms of application domains, employed methods, obtained results, and proposed integrations with other approaches. Most studies used modeling and simulation, focusing on time reduction, risk mitigation, and cost optimization. A growing trend has been identified toward integrating CCPM with methodologies, such as Scrum, BIM, Lean Construction, Fuzzy FMEA, and predictive algorithms, thereby broadening its applicability in high-complexity scenarios. However, a significant gap remains in empirical studies applied to Engineer-to-Order (ETO) systems and service-based organizations, which are characterized by high customization, variability, and interdependence of resources. The research is justified by the need to consolidate accumulated knowledge on CCPM and to guide future investigations toward underexplored sectors. The findings strengthen the theoretical robustness of the method while indicating concrete opportunities for empirical validation in real-world organizational settings. Full article
