The conventional manufacturing of refractory complex concentrated alloys (RCCAs) for high-temperature applications is complicated, particularly when material costs and high melting points of the materials processed are considered. Additive manufacturing (AM) could provide an effective alternative. However, the extreme temperatures involved represent significant challenges for manufacturing defect-free alloys using this approach. To address this issue, we investigated the preparation of a CrNbTiZr quaternary complex concentrated alloy from an equimolar blend of elemental powders using commercially available powder-blown L-DED technology. Initially, the alloys exhibited some defects owing to the internal stress caused by the temperature gradients. This was subsequently resolved by optimizing the deposition strategy. SEM, XRD and EDS were used to analyze the alloy in the as-deposited condition, revealing a BCC phase and a secondary Laves phase. Furthermore, Vickers hardness testing demonstrated a correlation between the hardness and the volume fraction of the Laves phase. Finally, successfully performed compression tests confirmed that the prepared material exhibits high-temperature strength and therefore is promising for high-temperature application under extreme conditions. This study systematically investigates the homogenization-induced Laves phase dissolution kinetics and recrystallization mechanisms in laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) processed IN718 superalloy. The as-built material exhibits a characteristic fine dendritic microstructure with interdendritic Laves phase segregation and high dislocation density, featuring directional sub-grain boundaries aligned with the build direction. Laves phase dissolution demonstrates dual-stage kinetics: initial rapid dissolution (0–15 min) governed by bulk atomic diffusion, followed by interface reaction-controlled deceleration (15–60 min) after 1 h at 1150 °C. Complete dissolution of the Laves phase is achieved after 3.7 h at 1150 °C. Recrystallization initiates preferentially at serrated grain boundaries through boundary bulging mechanisms, driven by localized orientation gradients and stored energy differentials. Grain growth kinetics obey a fourth-power time dependence, confirming Ostwald ripening-controlled boundary migration via grain boundary diffusion. Such a study is expected to be helpful in understanding the microstructural development of L-PBF-built IN718 under heat treatments. Full article

In order to improve the hydrogen storage properties of Laves phase AB2-type alloys, a series of Ti1−xZrxMn1.0Cr0.85Fe0.1 (x = 0.1–0.5) alloys were prepared by arc melting. The effects of Zr content on microstructure and hydrogen storage properties was investigated in detail. Crystal structure characterizations confirmed that all the alloys exhibit a single-phase C14 Laves structure, and the lattice parameters increase with increasing Zr content. The hydrogen storage measurements of the alloys indicate that with increasing Zr content, the hydrogen storage capacity initially increases and then decreases. The hydrogen absorption and desorption measurements of the alloys were performed by a Sieverts-type apparatus. Pressure–composition–temperature (P-C-T) tests at various temperatures showed that all the alloys display sloped plateaus. Increasing Zr content results in a gradual decrease in hydrogen absorption and desorption plateau pressures. Moreover, these alloys exhibit varying degrees of hysteresis, which also becomes more pronounced with a rise in Zr content. In summary, the Ti0.7Zr0.3Mn1.0Cr0.85Fe0.1 alloy demonstrates the best comprehensive hydrogen storage capacity. Further investigation on the cyclic performance of the Ti0.7Zr0.3Mn1.0Cr0.85Fe0.1 alloy was conducted. It was found that the alloy particles undergo significant pulverization after hydrogenation cycles, but the alloy maintained good phase structure stability and hydrogen storage performance. This study investigates the microstructural evolution, mechanical behavior, and electrochemical performance of CoCrFeNiNb and CoCrFeNiV HEAs fabricated via mechanical alloying and spark plasma sintering. Microstructural analyses reveal that the alloys have a face-centered cubic (FCC) matrix with Nb-enriched Laves and V-enriched σ phases. The CoCrFeNiNb HEA exhibits superior compressive strength and hardness than CoCrFeNiV due to uniform Laves phases distribution. Fracture surface analysis reveals that at lower sintering temperatures, the fracture is primarily caused by incomplete particle bonding, whereas at higher temperatures, brittle fracture modes dominated via transgranular cracking become predominant. The research results of potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) show that both alloys exhibited superior electrochemical stability in a 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution compared to the CoCrFeNi base alloy. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis confirms the formation of stable oxide layers (Nb2O5 and V2O3) on the precipitated phases, acting as protective barriers against chloride ion penetration. The selective oxidation of Nb and V improves the integrity of the passive film, reducing the corrosion rates and enhancing the long-term durability. These findings highlight the critical role of precipitated phases in enhancing the corrosion resistance of HEAs, and emphasize their potential for use in extreme environments. Full article

Alloy 625 is a widely utilized nickel-based superalloy known for its excellent mechanical strength and corrosion resistance in aggressive environments. However, its high niobium (Nb) content can lead to the formation of detrimental phases, such as Laves and MC carbides, during welding processes, compromising the mechanical integrity and long-term performance of the weld overlay. This review systematically examines recent research findings on the implications of reducing Nb content in Alloy 625 weld overlays, particularly with respect to microstructure evolution, mechanical behavior, and corrosion performance. Key advancements, including the understanding of segregation behavior, solidification paths, and secondary phase formation, are presented based on recent studies. This paper aims to provide a discussion on the trade-offs and future directions for optimizing Alloy 625 weld overlay claddings through Nb content modification. Full article

Mold copper plates (Cr–Zr–Cu alloy) frequently fail due to severe wear under high-temperature conditions during continuous casting. To solve this problem, Inconel 718 coatings were prepared on the plate surface via laser cladding to enhance its high-temperature wear resistance. The results demonstrate that the coatings exhibit a defect-free structure with metallurgical bonding to the substrate. The coating primarily consists of a γ-(Fe, Ni, Cr) solid solution and carbides (M23C6 and M6C). Notably, elongated columnar Laves phases and coarse Cr–Mo compounds were distributed along grain boundaries, significantly enhancing the coating’s microhardness and high-temperature stability. The coating exhibited an average microhardness of 491.7 HV0.5, which is approximately 6.8 times higher than that of the copper plate. At 400 °C, the wear rate of the coating was 4.7 × 10−4 mm3·N−1·min−1, significantly lower than the substrate’s wear rate of 8.86 × 10−4 mm3·N−1·min−1, which represents only 53% of the substrate’s wear rate. The dominant wear mechanisms were adhesive wear, abrasive wear, and oxidative wear. The Inconel 718 coating demonstrates superior hardness and excellent high-temperature wear resistance, effectively improving both the surface properties and service life of mold copper plates. Body-centered cubic (BCC) refractory high-entropy alloys (RHEAs) demonstrate significant potential as nuclear structural materials due to their exceptional mechanical properties and radiation tolerance. While Zr-containing RHEAs often develop multiphase structures through Zr-rich phase precipitation to enhance high-temperature mechanical performance, their irradiation response mechanisms remain poorly understood. This study investigated the microstructure evolution and radiation damage behavior in equiatomic MoNbTiVZr RHEA under Au-ion irradiation at fluences of 2 × 1015, 4 × 1015, and 1 × 1016 ions/cm2. Microstructural characterization revealed that the annealed alloy primarily consisted of near-equiatomic BCC1 phase, Zr-rich BCC2 phase, (Mo,V)Zr Laves phase, and ordered Zr2C phase. Post-irradiation analysis showed distinct defect evolution patterns: the BCC1 phase developed fine dislocation loops, while the Zr-rich BCC2 and Zr2C phases exhibited dislocation clusters and dense dislocation networks, respectively. BCC1 phase exhibited the most pronounced irradiation hardening corresponding to its fine, dispersed dislocation loop characteristics. Phase separation induced by Zr precipitation reduced chemical complexity, accelerating irradiation defect evolution. These findings demonstrated that Zr-rich phase precipitation detrimentally impacted the radiation resistance of BCC-structured RHEAs, suggesting that single-phase stability should be prioritized in nuclear material design. This study investigates the microstructure and mechanical properties of Inconel 718, a nickel-based alloy, reinforced with ceramic phases via additive manufacturing. Two reinforcement strategies were explored: in situ formation of ceramic phases through titanium powder addition, and direct incorporation of Cr2O3 and TiO2 ceramic particles. Both approaches significantly modified the alloy’s microstructure and elemental distribution. The in situ formation method produced leaf-like Ti-rich precipitates (up to 70.13 wt%), while direct ceramic addition suppressed the preferred orientation of the Laves phase and promoted the formation of NbC precipitates. Microhardness increased by 19.4% with titanium addition, compared to a modest 1.3% improvement with direct ceramic addition. Tensile testing revealed that titanium powder enhanced ultimate tensile strength but reduced elongation, whereas direct ceramic addition led to decreases in both strength and ductility. Wear resistance evaluation showed that direct ceramic addition yielded superior performance, evidenced by the lowest friction coefficient (0.514) and smallest wear volume (16,290,782 μm3). These findings demonstrate the effectiveness of ceramic reinforcement strategies in optimizing the mechanical and tribological behavior of additively manufactured Inconel 718, and offer valuable guidance for the development of wear-resistant components such as those used in hydraulic support systems. This study employs DFT+U calculations to investigate the ferromagnetic properties of ErAl2 and ErNi2 Laves phases under an external hydrostatic pressure P (0 GPa ≤ P ≤ 1.0 GPa). The calculated magnetic moments per formula unit for both crystalline structures align with experimentally reported values: 4.40 μB/f.u. in the hard magnetization <001> axis for ErAl2 and 5.56 μB/f.u. in the easy magnetization <001> axis for ErNi2. The DFT results indicate that the magnetic moment remains unchanged up to 1 GPa of hydrostatic pressure, with no structural instabilities observed, as evidenced by a nearly constant formation energy for ErAl2 and ErNi2 alloys. The simulations confirm that the magnetic behavior of ErAl2 is primarily driven by the electrons localized in the f orbitals. In contrast, for ErNi2, both d and f orbitals significantly contribute to the total magnetic moment. Finally, the electronic specific heat coefficient was calculated and reported as a function of hydrostatic pressure up to P = 1.0 GPa for each Laves phase. Full article

In this study, 20 wt.% of Nb was incorporated into a CrFeNi medium-entropy alloy (MEA) powder system to prepare CrFeNi-Nb composite coatings on a Q235B mild steel substrate by laser cladding technology. The effects of Nb addition on the phase composition, microstructure, and wear resistance of CrFeNi coatings were systematically investigated. Microstructural characterization revealed that the CrFeNi coating exhibited a single face-centered cubic (FCC) phase structure, while the CrFeNi-Nb composite coating demonstrated a dual-phase structure comprising FCC phase and Laves phase. The Laves phase significantly enhanced the microhardness and wear resistance of the coating. The average microhardness of the CrFeNi-Nb coating increased by 259.62% compared to the substrate and 190.58% compared to the Nb-free CrFeNi coating. The average coefficient of friction (COF) of the coating decreased from 0.74 to 0.68; the wear rate reduced from 5.77 × 10−4 mm3 N−1 m−1 to 2.26 × 10−4 mm3 N−1 m−1; and the weight loss decreased from 10.77 mg to 4.3 mg. The experimental results demonstrated that the addition of Nb promoted the formation of the Laves phase in the CrFeNi MEA, which effectively improved the wear resistance of the coating. Full article

This study uses a new type of nitrogen-containing nickel-based flux-cored welding wire to study the microstructure and tensile properties of the deposited metal at 600 –700 °C. The results indicate that the precipitation phases of deposited metal mainly include the M (C, N) phase, Laves phase, and γ′ phase. After solution and aging treatment, the Laves phase remelts into the substrate. Nano-sized M (C, N) phase particles precipitate inside the grains, while the M23C6 phase forms at the grain boundaries. When stretched at 600 °C, the main deformation mechanism of the as-welded specimen is the cutting of precipitated phases by a/2<110> unit dislocations. The ultimate tensile strength of the heat-treated sample is much higher than that of the as-welded sample, but the ductility is reduced. The deformation mechanism involves not only the a/2<110>matrix dislocation cutting precipitation phase, but also two a/6<121>incomplete dislocation cutting precipitation phases together to form stacked dislocations. When stretched at 700 °C, dislocation loops appeared in the SA sample, indicating that the dislocation bypass mechanism had been activated. The tensile deformation mechanism of the deposited metal achieved a transition from dislocation cutting precipitated phases to dislocation bypassing precipitated phases. Full article

Controlling multiple phases by adjusting elemental ratios and applying heat treatments effectively balances the strength and ductility of refractory high-entropy alloys. In this study, five types of V-Ti-Cr-Nb-Mo alloys were designed by varying the contents of V, Ti, and Nb, followed by annealing at 1200 °C for 8 h. The alloys’ crystal structures, microstructure evolution, and mechanical properties were systematically investigated. The V-Ti-Cr-Nb-Mo alloys exhibited a typical dendritic structure with a dual-phase (BCC + HCP) matrix. When the Nb content was maintained at 35 at.% with increasing V content, the volume fraction of the HCP phase increased, and the C14 Laves phase emerged. The as-cast alloy V15Ti30Cr5Nb35Mo15, with a triple-phase (BCC + HCP + Laves) structure, exhibited excellent mechanical properties, including a compressive strength of 1775 MPa and a ductility of 18.2%. After annealing, the HCP phase coarsened and partially dissolved, the Laves phase precipitation reduced, and while the hardness and strength decreased, the ductility improved significantly. The annealed alloy V5Ti35Cr5Nb40Mo15, with a dual-phase (BCC + HCP) structure, achieved a ductility of 26.9% under a compressive strength of 1530 MPa. This work demonstrates that multi-phase refractory high-entropy alloys can significantly enhance the strength–ductility synergy, providing an experimental foundation for the compositional design and performance optimization of refractory high-entropy alloys. This study examines the feasibility of micromagnetic NDE techniques, i.e., micromagnetic measurements, supported by machine learning methods, to identify and characterize the micro- and macrostructural changes caused by the mechanical loading at high temperatures of power plant steels, i.e., ferritic/martensitic P91 and the high chromium ferritic steel HiperFer-17Cr2. While the P91 did not show any systematic changes in micromagnetic measurements, which generally correlate with the evolution of the microstructure and the mechanical properties, for the HiperFer-17Cr2, pronounced changes in the micromagnetic properties were observed. In correlation with the evolution of the hardness and cyclic deformation behavior, which are both mainly attributed to Laves phase precipitation, the micromagnetic measurements significantly changed depending on the temperature, number of load cycles and load amplitude applied. Thus, these NDE methods can be used for early diagnosis and preventive maintenance strategies for HiperFer-17Cr2, potentially extending the lifespan of the components and mitigating safety risks. This article evaluates the possibility of replacing creep-resistant magnesium Mg-Zn-RE-Zr alloys (EZ33) with Mg-Al-Ca-Sr alloys. (1) Background: Mg alloys with RE metals show excellent properties. Due to their high cost, new, more economical Mg alloys are being developed. Replacing RE metals with cheaper elements such as Al and Ca allows us to obtain high mechanical properties at elevated temperatures due to the tendency to form stable intermetallic phases. (2) Methods: Microstructure analysis (LM, SEM, TEM, and XRD) was performed and mechanical properties were tested at ambient and elevated temperatures. (3) Results: Increasing the Ca content and decreasing the Al content leads to the formation of a continuous skeleton of high-melting and brittle Ca-rich Laves phases and Sr-rich intermetallic phases and the formation of plate-like precipitates of the C15 phase inside the α-Mg solid solution. The crystallographic orientation of plate-like precipitates contributes to the blocking of dislocations in slip systems activated at elevated temperatures. Increasing the Ca and Sr content allows for the regulation of the Al concentration in the α-Mg, providing solution strengthening and stability of the α-Mg solid solution. These factors contribute to a significant improvement in creep resistance of Mg-Al-Ca-Sr alloys. (4) Conclusions: The strength properties and elongation at ambient temperature of the Mg alloys with Ca and Sr addition are comparable to those of the EZ33 alloy, and due to the presence of lighter alloying elements, a better specific strength is achieved. Ca-rich Mg-Al-Ca-Sr alloys exhibit better creep resistance at temperatures of up to 200 °C compared to the EZ33 alloy. Full article

In this paper, the as-cast microstructure, microsegregation, the kinetics of secondary precipitation phase, and thermal deformation behavior in Ta-containing GH4151 alloy (Ta-GH4151) were studied using optical microscope (OM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), electron probe (EPMA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), mechanical testing and simulation (MTS) and electron backscattering diffraction (EBSD). The results indicate that Ti, Ta, Nb and Mo are mainly distributed in the interdendritic region and exhibit negative segregation characteristics, while Cr and W are mainly distributed in the dendritic arm region and exhibit positive segregation characteristics. The initial dissolution temperatures for Laves phase, eutectic (γ + γ′) and η phase are 1140–1150 °C, 1150–1160 °C and 1170–1180 °C, respectively. The diffusion activation energies of Nb, Ta and W are 313 kJ/mol, 323 kJ/mol and 345 kJ/mol, respectively. The hot deformation activation energy of Ta-GH4151 alloy after homogenization is 1694.173 kJ/mol. Based on the constitutive equation and hot processing map, the optimum hot deformation temperature and strain rate range are determined to be 1160–1170 °C/0.3–1 s−1. The addition of Ta not only increases the redissolution temperature of the Laves phase, eutectic (γ + γ′) and η phase but also increases the segregation of Nb, Ta and W, diffusion activation energy and homogenization. The results are expected to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the modification and accelerated application of GH4151 alloy. Full article
