Novel psychoactive substances (NPSs) exhibit extremely strong pharmaco-toxicological activity, often leading to severe adverse effects that pose a serious risk to consumers’ health. Among these, synthetic cannabinoids (SCs) currently represent the majority of drug seizures in Europe. One such compound, AKB-48 (also known as APINACA), was first identified in Japanese herbal smoking blends in 2012. Although it mimics the effects of Δ9-THC, the primary psychoactive component of Cannabis sativa, AKB-48 can induce more severe and potentially life-threatening outcomes. Several in vivo studies investigating the acute administration of AKB-48 have reported profound behavioral, neurological, and neurochemical alterations, including disruptions of neurotransmission across multiple brain regions, thus confirming its neurotoxic potential. Given the recognized vulnerability of the cerebellum to NPS, and its critical role in integrating neural circuits affected by psychostimulant drugs, the present study evaluated the toxic effects of repeated AKB-48 exposure on the cerebellar cortex of adult male and female ICR-CD1® mice. Particular attention was paid to the modulation of cell death pathways, alongside assessments of sensorimotor responses. The results demonstrate, for the first time, that repeated AKB-48 administration induces significant morphological, immunohistochemical, and ultrastructural changes in both male and female mice. These alterations included pronounced disruption of cerebellar architecture and marked modulation of cell death pathways, further corroborated by TEM-detected ultrastructural damage and a substantial reduction in the basal visual placing response. Overall, the findings provide clear evidence of AKB-48’s sex-independent neurotoxicity, leading to cerebellar alterations that ultimately result in neuroplasticity impairment. Full article

While previous studies have established the positive effects of minimalism on well-being, the issue of how minimalism shapes satisfaction within specific consumption contexts remains underexplored. This study investigates the relationships among minimalism, satisfaction with collaborative consumption (CC), and life satisfaction, examining the moderating role of corporate service sincerity. Drawing on goal satisfaction theory, we conceptualize minimalism as an intrinsic goal orientation that drives psychological fulfillment through value-congruent consumption. Survey data from 430 Japanese consumers with recent CC experience were analyzed using the SPSS PROCESS macro. Results indicate that minimalism positively predicts both satisfaction with CC and life satisfaction, and that these effects are amplified when the CC service is perceived as sincere. However, contrary to theoretical expectations, satisfaction with CC was negatively associated with life satisfaction, suggesting that domain-specific satisfaction in access-based consumption may not spill over to global well-being under certain conditions. We propose that this paradox reflects a boundary condition of goal satisfaction theory: when CC participation is constraint-driven rather than autonomously chosen, satisfaction may coexist with unfulfilled ownership aspirations. These findings advance the minimalist consumption literature by specifying mechanisms linking lifestyle values to consumption outcomes and offer practical guidance for sharing economy platforms seeking to engage value-driven consumers through authentic brand communication. Background/Objectives: Robot-assisted gastrointestinal (GI) cancer surgery has expanded in Japan since national reimbursement in 2018, yet hospital profitability remains uncertain because of capital, maintenance, and consumable costs. We examined whether a program-level volume threshold for profitability exists under Japan’s fee schedule and quantified actionable improvement targets. Methods: We developed a hospital-perspective, model-based economic evaluation (index admission to 30 days; 2025 Japanese yen (JPY)) comparing robot-assisted surgery (RAS) with conventional laparoscopic surgery (CLS) under Japan’s fee schedule (one point = ¥10) for gastrectomy, colectomy, rectal resection, and pancreatoduodenectomy. Case-level contribution margin differentials (ΔCM) were defined as the revenue differential minus the consumables differential and additional operating room (OR) time costs, plus savings from reduced length of stay (LOS), and were aggregated to annual program profit (Π) after fixed costs and platform sharing. Primary outputs were allowable consumables, required cut (%), and isoprofit contours. Uncertainty was assessed using 50,000-iteration probabilistic sensitivity analysis (PSA), one-way sensitivity analysis (OWSA), and learning-curve scenarios in line with Consolidated Health Economic Evaluation Reporting Standards (CHEERS) 2022. Results: In the base case, ΔCM was predominantly ≤0 for colon, rectum, and pancreatoduodenectomy; therefore, when the case-mix-weighted mean ΔCM was ≤0, increasing volume could not achieve breakeven and instead increased losses. Each 10 min reduction in OR time increased allowable consumables by ¥15,000, and each bed-day reduction increased it by ¥30,000. These required-cut and isoprofit maps provide actionable targets for cost negotiation, operational improvement, and platform sharing. Conclusions: Volume expansion alone rarely yields profitability; coordinated reductions in consumables, OR time, and LOS, together with platform sharing, are required. Full article

Debates on sustainability have focused mainly on conventional and organic farming. However, little attention has been given to intermediate production approaches with potential benefits for environmental protection, food affordability, and food safety. This study investigated consumers’ acceptance of an intermediate farming method characterized by minimal use of agrochemicals. Using a preference-based grouping approach, 184 Japanese consumers were divided into organic-prone (OA-prone), conventional-prone (CA-prone), and balance-prone groups (χ2 test, p < 0.001). The results revealed clear differences in how these groups evaluated and responded to the produce from the intermediate farming method. OA-prone consumers tended to evaluate such produce against the standards associated with organic food and therefore showed more cautious acceptance. In contrast, CA- and balance-prone consumers demonstrated relatively higher acceptance when product safety and taste were assured, reflecting a more pragmatic evaluation based on functional attributes and affordability. These findings suggest that the promotion of environmentally friendly intermediate farming depends more on pragmatic CA- and balance-prone consumers rather than those value-driven organic consumers. By highlighting consumer heterogeneity in the evaluation of such farming systems, this study contributes to a broader understanding of sustainable food consumption and underscores the role of intermediate farming in bridging environmental sustainability and food security. Background/Objectives: Skin carotenoid measurements have been proposed as an indicator to reflect of fruit and vegetable intake, but evidence from occupational settings remains limited. The primary aim of this study was to assess the association between fruit and vegetable intake and skin carotenoid levels in the workplace. The secondary aim was to examine the association of skin carotenoid levels with blood glucose levels and blood pressure (BP). Methods: This cross-sectional study included Japanese workers aged ≥20 years between 2022 and 2023. Skin carotenoid levels were measured, dietary intake was assessed using self-administered questionnaires, and data from workplace health check-up records were collected. Multiple regression analysis was conducted to examine the association between skin carotenoid levels and fruit and vegetable intake in 210 participants. Associations between skin carotenoid levels and log-transformed glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c), fasting blood glucose (FBG), systolic BP, and diastolic BP levels were examined in 162, 158, and 183 participants, respectively. Results: Skin carotenoid levels were positively associated with the number of vegetable dishes consumed and the frequency of fruit intake. A slight positive association was observed with HbA1c levels (partial regression coefficient = 0.00012), whereas no associations were found with FBG or BP. Conclusions: Skin carotenoid levels reflect self-reported fruit and vegetable intake, supporting their potential use as a non-invasive dietary assessment tool in workplace nutrition education. However, the associations observed with HbA1c were very small and of limited clinical significance, and the results should be interpreted with caution. Full article

Matcha tea (Camellia sinensis (L.) Kuntze) is a Japanese powdered green tea characterized by an exceptionally high content of health-promoting compounds. It is produced by shading the tea plants for 21 days prior to harvesting. It can be consumed both as an infusion and as a whole powder form. The present study aimed to analyze the micro- and macronutrient composition of matcha tea infusions (traditional and daily) brewed with water at different temperatures, as well as that of matcha powder. Samples were analyzed using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OS). Two types of matcha infusions were analyzed: daily and traditional, prepared at 25 °C, 70 °C, 80 °C, and 90 °C in addition to matcha powders. The results demonstrated that both infusions and matcha powder are sources of the tested elements (potassium, phosphorus, magnesium, calcium, zinc) and may complement a healthy, balanced diet. The type of tea significantly affected elemental content, while brewing temperature did not significantly influence the mineral composition of infusions. Taken together, these results indicate that matcha represents a nutritionally relevant beverage whose mineral profile may contribute to dietary quality and support physiological functions related to metabolic health. Tape stripping (TS) is a minimally invasive technique that enables in vivo assessment of drug uptake in the skin of human subjects. Whilst appropriate for evaluating the bioequivalence (BE) of topical formulations, methodological variations persist, especially regarding the inclusion of clearance time measurements. This manuscript compares the TS protocols described in several publications, including the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and Japanese guidance, containing information relating to the evaluation of utility, practicality, and scientific validity. Evidence suggests that for drugs acting locally in the skin, clearance measurements that require time-consuming practical manipulation and subsequent complex data processing offer limited value, whereas single time point uptake studies, which are more convenient and expedient, may suffice for regulatory BE assessments. This discussion offers practical guidance for BE assessment of topical dermatological products and a more expedient approach using a single time point uptake study protocol, obviating the need for clearance time assessments. Background: Wrist-worn consumer activity trackers are widely used to promote physical activity (PA) and reduce sedentary behavior (SB). However, evidence regarding their validity for measuring PA and SB in free-living school-aged children remains limited. This study evaluated the concurrent validity and wear compliance of a wrist-worn consumer activity tracker in school-aged children under free-living conditions with protocol-defined wear requirements. Methods: A total of 102 children (mean age: 10.2 years; 44.1% girls) wore a wrist-worn device (Fitbit Ace) and a waist-worn accelerometer (Omron Active Style Pro HJA-750c, ASP-750c). Of the 1122 person-days collected over 11 days, 135 person-days meeting inclusion criteria for both devices were included (≥10 h/day wear time and an inter-device wear time difference of ≤60 min). Step count and time in SB, light (LPA), moderate (MPA), vigorous (VPA), and moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA) were assessed. Correlations, mean absolute percentage error (MAPE), agreement, and wear compliance between the two devices were examined. Results: Correlations were strong for step count (r = 0.86), SB (r = 0.72), and LPA (r = 0.71); however, agreement was poor, with systematic overestimation of step count, SB, VPA, and MVPA and underestimation of LPA and MPA by the Fitbit Ace, and MAPE exceeding 20% for all PA variables. Wear compliance (≥10 h/day on ≥4 days) was higher for the Fitbit Ace (97.0%) than for the ASP-750c (62.2%). Conclusions: Although the Fitbit Ace may be useful for characterizing general patterns of LPA and SB in school-aged children, caution is warranted for accurate individual-level PA assessment. Listeria monocytogenes is a high-risk pathogenic bacterium associated with ready-to-eat foods and poses a potential threat to consumer health. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence, characterization and genetic diversity of L. monocytogenes in ready-to-eat raw salmon and trout products obtained from physical stores and online stores in China. Out of 150 samples analyzed, 23 (15.3%) were positive for L. monocytogenes. Among these positive samples, three (12%) were from Japanese restaurants, four (16%) from farmers markets, one (2.9%) from large supermarkets and fifteen (30%) from e-commerce platforms, and only one sample showed a contamination level exceeding 100 most probable number (MPN)/g. The isolates from positive samples demonstrated a concrete public health risk through several findings: twenty-three L. monocytogenes exhibited varying degrees of cytotoxicity, ranging from 7.6% to 71.8%. Compared with the reference strain ATCC 19115, five of these isolates were highly cytotoxic, a result that was validated by mouse survival rate experiment, which also confirmed their high virulence at tested dose. All isolates were resistant to cefuroxime sodium, ceftriaxone, cefepime and nalidixic acid, and 13% showed resistance to sulphamethoxazole-trimethoprim. Three serogroups were identified, with serogroup Ⅰ.1 (1/2a, 3a) being the most prevalent (65.2%). These isolates were grouped into eight sequence types, with ST8 (34.8%) and ST87 (30.4%) dominating. All isolates carried virulence genes associated with LIPI-1 andmultiple internalin genes (inlA, inlB, inlJ and inlK), confirming their potential pathogenicity. Additionally, the isolates harbored antimicrobial resistance genes lin and FosX. The five highly virulent isolates exhibited the highest genetic similarity to J2-031 (GCA_000438645.1) and C1-387 (GCA_000438605.1). The results provided valuable information for Chinese regulatory authorities to strengthen the risk monitoring of L. monocytogenes in ready-to-eat raw salmon and trout products. Full article

Background: Acetic acid has been suggested to have health benefits. Our previous exploratory study linked acetic acid intake to higher protein and vitamin consumption, but relationships with age and sex remained unclear. Objective: This study examined associations between acetic acid intake, age, and sex, and explored nutrient correlates after adjusting for age, sex, and energy intake. Methods: Dietary data from 12,074 Japanese adults aged 20–69 years, collected via the Asken food-tracking app, were analyzed. Two-way ANOVA assessed effects of age, sex, and their interaction on acetic acid intake. Multiple linear regressions examined associations between acetic acid intake and nutrient intakes. Model 1 adjusted for age and sex; Model 2 additionally adjusted for total energy intake. Results: Participants included 3038 men (47.8 ± 11.9 y) and 9036 women (42.4 ± 11.8 y). Acetic acid intake was higher among men and older participants (sex: F = 11.0, p < 0.001; age: F = 9.1, p < 0.001). In Model 1, acetic acid intake correlated positively with most nutrients. After adjusting for energy (Model 2), negative associations were found with carbohydrates, sugars, starches, saturated fat, and butyric acid (all p < 0.05). Conclusions: Individuals with higher acetic acid intake tended to consume fewer carbohydrates and saturated fats, even at equivalent energy intake. These findings suggest that acetic acid-containing diets may reduce the intake of starches and saturated fatty acids, potentially contributing to obesity prevention. Full article

Shishamo smelt (Spirinchus lanceolatus), which is endemic to Hokkaido, Japan, is frequently substituted in markets with morphologically similar capelin (Mallotus villosus) imported from abroad. Lipids are essential nutrients that play important roles in fish authenticity, validation, and nutritional assessment. Although shishamo has long been consumed in Japan, its region-specific lipid distribution and composition are different from those of capelin and have not been well explored. To overcome these gaps, we used untargeted liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry to profile sex- and region-specific lipids in the Japanese S. lanceolatus and Nordic M. villosus. The results revealed that female S. lanceolatus heads exhibited high triacylglycerol (TAG) content, closely resembling roe composition. Docosahexaenoic acid and eicosapentaenoic acid were enriched in the female S. lanceolatus viscera. Multivariate analysis identified monounsaturated fatty acids, such as fatty acid (FA) 22:1 and FA 20:1, as robust discriminatory markers between S. lanceolatus and M. villosus. Overall, sex- and regiospecific differences in lipid composition between the two species were correlated and compared. These lipidomic signatures provide a basis for verifying species authenticity and geographic origin, while highlighting the nutritional lipid potential of S. lanceolatus, particularly from the female viscera. Background/Objectives: Some Japanese people still adhere to a systematic traditional Japanese diet pattern (the Shokuyo diet) consisting mainly of brown rice, vegetables, legumes, and small amounts of fish. We investigated the impact of this dietary pattern on the intestinal microbiota of its female consumers. Methods: The intestinal microbiota of 19 Japanese females in their 60s and 70s consuming the Shokuyo diet (Shokuyo diet group) and 50 females of the same age consuming a normal Japanese diet (NJ diet group) were compared. The NJ diet group was further subdivided into a healthy NJ diet H subgroup, comprising females (n = 19) without any diseases, and an unhealthy NJ diet UH subgroup (n = 31) consisting of females with certain diseases, and a subgroup analysis was performed. Intestinal microbiota analysis was performed using 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing. Results: The β-diversity of the intestinal microbiota significantly differed between the Shokuyo diet and NJ diet groups. Similarly, in the subgroup analysis, β-diversity also significantly differed between the NJ diet UH subgroup and the Shokuyo diet group. However, no significant difference was observed between the NJ diet H and Shokuyo diet groups. These results indicate that the intestinal microbial composition of the Shokuyo diet group resembled that of the healthy participants, and that differences in intestinal microbial composition between the Shokuyo and NJ diet groups were strongly influenced by the presence of participants with diseases in the NJ diet group. That is, differences in β-diversity may have been strongly mediated by the health status of the participants. Conclusions: Consumption of the Shokuyo diet may be associated with a healthy intestinal microbial composition in older Japanese female, suggesting its potential as a viable dietary intervention option. In this article, we examine the dynamic interdependencies among components of Japan’s consumer price index (CPI) using a two-lag time-varying loading factor (TLTVLF) model. Whereas previous studies have typically decomposed CPI series into long-term trends, seasonal patterns, and cyclical fluctuations, such approaches mainly describe structural features without fully uncovering the latent mechanisms that drive price dynamics. The proposed TLTVFL modeling framework addresses this limitation by allowing both factor loadings and their lagged effects to evolve over time, thereby capturing gradual structural changes and the time-varying propagation of shocks across CPI categories. Using monthly data for ten major CPI categories from January 1970 to December 2024, we identify evolving common factors, category-specific sensitivities, and dynamic transmission patterns associated with major macroeconomic events. The findings reveal substantial temporal variation in inter-category linkages, offering fresh insights into sectoral contributions to inflationary pressures and providing policy-relevant implications for more effective monetary and fiscal interventions. Methodologically, this study extends the frontier of dynamic factor modeling, while empirically, it deepens the understanding of the mechanisms underlying price fluctuations over a long historical horizon. Purpose: Cross-sectional analysis using open data has revealed an association between the traditional Japanese diet score (TJDS) and healthy life expectancy (HALE). This study aimed to clarify the association of the TJDS with the HALE and average life expectancy (LE) via a longitudinal analysis. Methods: Data regarding the food supply and total energy were extracted from the database of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, and data regarding HALE and LE were obtained from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019. The supply of items consumed frequently (rice, fish, soybeans, vegetables, and eggs) and less frequently (wheat, milk, and red meat) in the Japanese diet were scored (total: −8 to 8 points) and stratified into tertiles by country. The gross domestic product, aging rates, years of education, smoking rate, physical activity, and obesity rate were used as covariates. Longitudinal analyses were conducted for 143 countries, using the HALE and LE for each country from 2010 to 2019 as dependent variables and the 2010 TJDS as an independent variable. Results: The fixed effects (standard errors) were HALE 0.424 (0.102) and LE 0.521 (0.119), indicating significance (p < 0.001). Conclusion: The nine-year longitudinal analysis using international data suggests that the traditional Japanese diet based on rice may prolong the HALE and LE. Full article

The use of full-battery electric vehicles is an essential strategy for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and mitigating climate change. This study examined the transition to full-battery electric vehicles by conducting a cross-sectional household survey in 2023 that collected information on vehicle preferences, evaluations, purchase intentions, environmental attitudes, and socioeconomic and demographic characteristics. The results show that among households using a vehicle as their primary mode of transportation, approximately 89% relied on fossil fuel vehicles, whereas only 6% used electric vehicles. The study further finds that acceptance of vehicles during inter-vehicle transitions is closely linked to energy type: households currently owning fossil fuel vehicles exhibited a high likelihood of repurchasing a fossil fuel vehicle, while electric vehicle owners were more inclined to choose another electric vehicle across cities and areas of different sizes. Households that own electric vehicles tend to report higher levels of well-being compared with those that own fossil fuel vehicles. In addition, sufficient charging infrastructure, stronger knowledge of environmental issues, participation in altruistic donation activities, and cooperative behavior positively influenced electric vehicle adoption. These findings suggest several policy implications, including the expansion of charging stations for business and public use, setting reasonable vehicle prices, improving charging speed, developing electric vehicles suitable for large families, and encouraging individuals to gain initial driving experience with electric vehicles to promote adoption.
