Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) and end-stage renal disease (ESRD) represent a growing global health burden, affecting nearly one in ten adults worldwide. CKD is associated with high morbidity, premature mortality, reduced quality of life and enormous healthcare costs, and is primarily driven by dialysis and kidney transplantation. The silent and progressive nature of CKD means that most patients are diagnosed late, when irreversible damage has already occurred and costly kidney replacement therapies (KRT) become necessary. Dialysis services are resource-intensive, requiring significant infrastructure, specialized staff, and consumables, which makes them especially challenging to sustain in low- and middle-income countries. Traditional models of nephrology, care center-based dialysis and fragmented follow-up are increasingly inadequate in meeting the demands of a rising CKD population. These challenges highlight the urgent need for innovative approaches that enhance efficiency, improve patient outcomes, and expand access. Objective: This review aims to analyze the current landscape of information and communication technology (ICT) applications in nephrology and to evaluate how digital innovations are reconfiguring kidney therapy. Specifically, it seeks to identify the major ICT tools that are currently in use, assess their clinical and operational impact, and discuss their role in creating more sustainable, patient-centered kidney care models. This study reviews and analyzes ICT tools that are reconfiguring nephrology, including remote monitoring, AI, wearables, patient engagement apps and data dashboards. Methods: Narrative and scoping review of recent innovations in nephrology, including remote patient monitoring (RPM), telehealth, artificial intelligence (AI) analytics, wearable sensors, and clinical decision support platforms. Results: ICT tools such as Sharesource, Versia, telenephrology platforms, medical assistant for Chronic Care Service (MACCS), AI-based predictive analytics, wearable devices and patient engagement apps have improved patient outcomes, adherence, and early detection of complications. Key metrics include technique survival, hospitalization rate, patient-reported outcomes, workflow efficiency, and prediction accuracy. The relevant literature describing the potential of digital health technologies, including ICT platforms, artificial intelligence tools, and remote monitoring systems, to transform nephrology care was retrieved and screened for inclusion in this narrative review. Conclusions: ICT has shifted nephrology from reactive to proactive care, enhancing accessibility, patient empowerment and clinical efficiency. Future directions include precision nephrology, fully wearable kidneys, AI integration and large language models for education and triage. Challenges include digital divide, regulatory heterogeneity, cost and the need for long-term evidence. Full article

This contribution examines the use of ICT in mosaic heritage to enhance the user experience in heritage interpretation. The study focuses on the digital graphic reconstruction of a Roman mosaic featuring animal emblems. As the original mosaic is no longer physically accessible, the reconstruction relied on the systematic collection, comparison, and analysis of diverse visual sources, including archival photographs, historical drawings, and related documentation; photography and drone capture; digital assembly of borders of hand-drawn mosaic elements; and systematic assembly and completion of repetitions in representative mosaic motifs and observational color and design refinement of animal emblems. The article outlines the mosaic’s schematic layout and the key reconstruction steps, resulting in a digital representation developed within the limits imposed by the available evidence. The outcome demonstrates that combining historical research and digital graphics can effectively support the preservation and communication of cultural heritage. Finally, an augmented reality application for interactive presentation of the reconstructed mosaic is introduced, enabling users to explore both the reconstruction process and the interpretive meanings of individual mosaic elements, thereby enhancing engagement and understanding. Digital solutions and social media platforms for older adults are widely associated with positive social and health-related outcomes. However, empirical evidence on their sustained use remains limited, particularly from a usability and accessibility perspective. Previous reviews have primarily examined social media use in later life from social or psychological perspectives, whereas this review focuses on digital inclusion and psychosocial well-being from a technological and ICT-oriented perspective. The aim is to examine how technological and design-related factors may help explain gaps between reported benefits and actual usage among older adults. It also seeks to support researchers and designers in understanding why many digital platforms fail to sustain long-term engagement despite reported initial benefits. The review further identifies areas where emerging approaches, such as AI- or VR/AR-supported (XR) systems, could be explored in future research. Following PRISMA 2020 guidelines, studies published between 2005 and 2025 were reviewed to identify key technological and user-related factors that influence online participation among older adults. Findings indicate that barriers related to digital literacy, accessibility, and usability are frequently associated with reduced engagement. At the same time, the potential role of user-friendly and well-designed platforms is often implied rather than empirically examined. Although inclusive and adaptable systems are widely discussed, explicit HCI- and interface-level usability evaluations remain surprisingly rare. None of the included studies examined AI- or XR-related features of social platforms. This indicates that ageing and social media research have yet to empirically address emerging technologies that increasingly shape online interaction. The review underscores the need for accessible and adaptable technological solutions that promote digital engagement and emotional well-being among older users. Full article

There is increasing pressure on South African Universities of Technology (UoTs) to incorporate cutting-edge Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) to enhance teaching and learning. Adopting Learning Management Systems (LMSs), which offer adaptable, easily accessible, and data-driven education, is essential to this change. Nevertheless, many UoT lecturers still struggle to successfully adopt and use LMS platforms, even with investments in digital infrastructure and policy development. This study presents the equity-sensitive Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) framework as a conceptual addition to inclusive digital pedagogy and investigates lecturers’ experiences with LMS integration at South African UoTs. This study aimed to explore how lecturers at South African UoT experience the adoption and integration of LMSs and to examine how institutional support, digital literacy, and infrastructural factors shape inclusive digital pedagogy. The results of an Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) of six interviews with academic staff were structured into three thematic subsections (i.e., (1) lecturers’ experiences of LMS adoption, (2) institutional, infrastructural and personal factors and (3) institutional support, training and inclusivity) that directly align with the three study’s research questions. Rethinking TPACK from an equity-sensitive perspective advances theory by establishing access and equity as central mediating conditions of technology integration, especially in Global South higher education contexts with limited resources. In practical terms, the findings show that to promote inclusive and sustainable LMS adoption, specific capacity building, policy alignment, and institutional investment are required. The paper is relevant to policymakers, academic developers, and institutional leaders because of these implications, which align with the National Digital and Future Skills Strategy, the National Research Foundation (NRF) priorities, and the Department of Higher Education and Training’s (DHET) White Paper on Post-School Education. The agricultural sector in the world and Sub-Saharan Africa faces the pressing challenge of meeting the growing food demand driven by the exponential population growth. With smallholder poultry farming playing a critical role in food and nutritional security, this systematic review synthesizes literature from the past two decades to assess the adoption of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) among smallholder poultry farmers in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). The review focuses on the benefits and barriers impacting this adoption. Following the PRISMA methodology, 19 peer-reviewed studies were analyzed to explore how ICT facilitates market participation, enhances information exchange, and improves producer livelihoods. The included studies in this review were sourced from four major academic databases: Science Direct, Web of Science, Wiley online library, and EBSCOhost. The findings reveal that ICT adoption significantly reduces information asymmetry, enables farmers to access market and production knowledge, and thus improves their profitability and inclusion in informal and formal market platforms. The review underscores the potential of targeted policy interventions and digital platforms to empower smallholder poultry farmers, enhance their commercialization, and contribute towards agricultural sustainability in the region. This study highlights the critical need for increased ICT accessibility, capacity building, and infrastructural improvements to support the digital transformation of smallholder poultry farming in Sub-Saharan Africa. This study analyzes the ICT infrastructure in teaching practice centers from the perspective of students enrolled in early childhood and primary education degree programs at a Spanish university during the 2024–2025 academic year. A quantitative, cross-sectional design was employed. A questionnaire was distributed to all first- to fourth-year students via the university platform, with a sample of 556 participants. The data collection instrument consisted of an ad hoc adaptation and extension of the validated EdSocEval_V2 questionnaire, ensuring factorial validity. It was used to examine the availability of technological resources for communication and digital management, together with personal and contextual variables to support data classification. Results indicate high availability of basic digital resources, including projectors, Wi-Fi, interactive whiteboards, printers, alongside limited access to robotics, digital tablets, and classrooms of the future. High homogeneity was observed in communication and digital management resources, such as websites, virtual learning environments and corporate email. MANOVA analyses revealed that students perceive ICT infrastructure to be more integrated at higher levels of primary education, with no significant differences based on school ownership. Binary logistic regressions showed that school ownership predicts the availability of certain ICT resources, with private schools exhibiting lower network presence. Full article

This study develops and validates a three-level model of digital learning conditions that reflects the progression from ICT accessibility (“access”) to pedagogical use (“use”) and their influence on student learning outcomes (“impact”). Drawing on secondary analysis of the PISA 2022 ICT Familiarity Questionnaire and applying complex-sample regression together with the logic of structural equation modelling (SEM), the study examines how ICT resources, usage practices, and digital feedback (ICTFEED) interact and how they are associated with Lithuanian fifteen-year-olds’ achievement in mathematics, reading, and science. The three-level model includes: (1) ICT infrastructure—access to technology at home and at school and students’ perceived quality of technological resources; (2) ICT learning practices—use of digital tools in subject lessons, inquiry-based activities, and school-related work outside the classroom; and (3) digital feedback and its relationship with academic achievement. Results show that neither home nor school ICT availability predicts students’ experience of receiving digital feedback. The only significant infrastructure-level predictor is the perceived quality of school ICT resources (ICTQUAL). Digital feedback is most strongly predicted by ICT use in inquiry-based learning and by ICT-supported schoolwork outside the classroom, whereas ICT use in subject lessons has only a minimal effect. Across all domains, digital feedback is negatively associated with student achievement, even when ICT access, resource quality, learning-use variables, and digital leisure are controlled for. This pattern suggests that ICTFEED functions primarily as a compensatory mechanism, being more frequently used with lower-achieving students rather than serving as a direct enhancer of academic performance. The proposed three-level model offers a structured framework for interpreting students’ digital learning experiences and highlights the key components of school ICT ecosystems that shape digital assessment practices and learning outcomes. This study analyzes the socio-cultural and behavioral determinants of FinTech adoption and access to credit among Ecuadorian SMEs. A probabilistic sample of 600 firms, operating in the services, commerce, information and communication technologies (ICT), and industry sectors, was surveyed to ensure representation of the country’s productive structure. The model integrates financial literacy, institutional trust, and perceived accessibility as key independent variables, with FinTech adoption as a digital behavioral factor and access to credit and credit conditions as the primary dependent outcomes. Using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM), complemented by multi-group invariance tests and cluster analysis, the study evaluates seven hypotheses linking cognitive, perceptual, and digital mechanisms to financing behavior and firm performance. Results show that financial literacy and institutional trust significantly improve access to formal credit, with perceived accessibility acting as a partial mediator. FinTech adoption enhances credit conditions but remains limited among micro and small firms. Based on these findings, the study recommends strengthening financial education programs, simplifying credit procedures to reduce perceived barriers, and developing trust-building regulatory frameworks for digital finance. The results highlight the importance of socio-cultural and behavioral factors in shaping SME financing decisions and contribute to the understanding of financial inclusion dynamics in emerging economies. This study develops an immersive marine Information and Communication Technology (ICT) convergence framework designed to enhance coastal climate resilience by improving accessibility, visualization, and communication of scientific research on Dokdo (Dok Island) in the East Sea. High-resolution spatial datasets, multi-source marine observations, underwater imagery, and validated research outputs were integrated into an interactive virtual-reality (VR) and web-based three-dimensional (3D) platform that translates complex geophysical and ecological information into intuitive experiential formats. A geospatially accurate 3D virtual model of Dokdo was constructed from maritime and underwater spatial data and coupled with immersive VR scenarios depicting sea-level variability, coastal morphology, wave exposure, and ecological characteristics. To evaluate practical usability and pro environmental public engagement, a three-phase field survey (n = 174) and a System Usability Scale (SUS) assessment (n = 42) were conducted. The results indicate high satisfaction (88.5%), strong willingness to re-engage (97.1%), and excellent usability (mean SUS score = 80.18), demonstrating the effectiveness of immersive content for environmental education and science communication crucial for achieving Sustainable Development Goal 14 targets. The proposed platform supports stakeholder engagement, affective learning, early climate risk perception, conservation planning, and multidisciplinary science–policy dialogue. In addition, it establishes a foundation for a digital twin system capable of integrating real-time ecological sensor data for environmental monitoring and scenario-based simulation. Overall, this integrated ICT-driven framework provides a transferable model for visualizing marine research outputs, enhancing public understanding of coastal change, and supporting sustainable and adaptive decision-making in small island and coastal regions. Access to Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) is a critical component for social inclusion and population development. This study aimed to analyze ICT access in Argentine households, considering its distribution according to deprivation conditions and area of residence (urban–rural) at the regional level, and incorporating a spatial association perspective at the departmental level. The percentage of households with Internet access, computers (or tablets), and cell phones with connectivity was examined at the regional level, according to household deprivation type and area of residence. At the departmental level, the analysis was conducted through thematic maps and the estimation of spatial autocorrelation patterns (global and local Moran’s Index). Indicators were constructed using data from the 2022 Population, Household, and Housing Census. Results revealed significant disparities in ICT access, attributable to deprivation conditions and the geographic distribution of households. Spatial autocorrelation patterns with low ICT access were mainly identified in the Northwest (NOA) and Northeast (NEA) regions, while the highest coverage levels were concentrated in the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area (AMBA), the Pampeana, and Patagonia regions. The evidence highlights the need to design public policies aimed at reducing digital divides. Full article

The creative economy includes the processes involved in producing, sharing, and using goods and services that depend on creativity, cultural understanding, entrepreneurship, and intellectual property as essential factors for economic value. This study examines the impact of digital infrastructure, artificial intelligence (AI), and innovation capabilities on the performance of South Africa’s creative economy from 1999 to 2023. It uses the autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) model and incorporates patent activity, ICT-related trade, and creative sector variables to analyse the short-term and long-term relationships. The findings suggest that digital trade and sector maturity significantly increase intellectual property revenues, while patent activities show minimal effect, and funding factors face measurement challenges. Persistent digital divides, reflected in uneven ICT adoption, limit equitable participation and business prospects. These results highlight the challenges and systemic obstacles faced by creative entrepreneurs. Policy suggestions emphasise targeted support for commercialising intellectual property, wider access to affordable digital infrastructure, and creating AI-focused creative hubs to strengthen South Africa’s role in the global creative economy. The development of electronics education requires continuously keeping pace with changes in pedagogical methods, hardware, and software, as well as with emerging laboratory concepts such as remote, virtual, and augmented reality. This paper proposes an open, curriculum-integrated approach to embed ICT competencies, specifically computer networking and programming, into electronics education and assesses its impact. We developed a networked measurement and information-processing system that students not only use but also learn about every aspect of its operation across our electronics courses. The system uses LXI-capable measurement instruments connected using principles of standard computer networks, enabling built-in remote-access capabilities and high scalability. Software for communication, instrument control, and purpose-built functions for electronics applications is implemented in Python 3. The software also handles data acquisition and local or remote post-processing. In this way, the system is open, versatile, and readily adaptable to future instrument developments. Integrating this system into the curriculum demonstrably enhanced students’ ICT, digital, and entrepreneurial competencies, aligning with the European Commission competency frameworks. Evaluation, using purpose-built questionnaires, indicated strong student reception across multiple system aspects and confirmed the approach relevance and applicability from the perspective of industry stakeholders. Hybrid Analysis of Videoconference Technology Use by Aging-in-Place Organizations to Promote Social Engagement for Older Adults: A Scoping Review with Latent Topic Modeling

Background/Objectives: Loneliness and social isolation are common among older adults and linked to adverse health outcomes. Videoconferencing can support social connections, but the role of aging-in-place organizations (AIPOs), such as senior centers and Area Agencies on Aging, in facilitating adoption is poorly understood. This review examined how AIPOs use relational videoconferencing to promote social engagement among older adults. Methods: We applied a hybrid methodology combining a scoping review with latent topic modeling to contextualize and analyze the evidence base. Exploratory searches revealed limited literature specifically addressing AIPO involvement; therefore, we first conducted latent topic modeling of the broader literature on social videoconferencing among older adults to establish a thematic foundation for the subsequent PRISMA-guided scoping review. Thematic analysis of this broader corpus, identified through 2021 database searches, applied Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) to a collection of peer-reviewed articles. Subsequent refinement of this corpus by removing non-primary research and non-AIPO records produced the narrower PRISMA subset used for the scoping review. The scoping review followed JBI guidelines and was based on database searches (EBSCOhost: MEDLINE, AgeLine, SocINDEX, Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition, and Family & Society Studies Worldwide; ProQuest Social Science Premium Collection; and PubMed, including MEDLINE, PMC, and in-process content) for peer-reviewed studies published between 2011 and 2025. Inclusion criteria required primary research involving adults aged 65 years or older, use of videoconferencing technology for social engagement, and reference to AIPOs or analogous community-based aging services. The protocol was post-registered with the Open Science Framework. Results: The LDA analysis of 101 peer-reviewed articles identified six latent themes describing the broader research landscape: problem of isolation, character of socialization, physical health, technology as intervention, technology as social medium, and supportive environments. This thematic framework informed the scoping review, which screened 1908 records and retained 25 publications (representing 24 unique studies) explicitly referencing AIPO involvement in relational videoconferencing. Only one study predated COVID-19. Mapping these studies to the LDA-derived themes revealed the least consistent coverage to be in supportive environments and physical health, particularly among AIPOs other than senior or community centers. Conclusions: Relational videoconferencing has potential to sustain and expand older adults’ social connections, but evidence mapped through the scoping review shows that documentation of how AIPOs support adoption is sparse. The hybrid approach advances understanding of videoconferencing in aging contexts and identifies priorities for documenting, comparing, and refining AIPO practices to inform future interventions and policy. Energy consumption is a key driver of economic and social development, particularly in rapidly expanding sectors such as Information and Communication Technology (ICT). This study explores the energy demand of Quito’s ICT sector across technical, organizational, economic, social, and environmental dimensions, aiming to inform sustainable urban strategies. A mixed-methods approach was applied, combining quantitative and qualitative analyses. Data was collected via questionnaires from 398 ICT companies and analyzed using descriptive statistics and multivariate techniques, including the Gower similarity coefficient, Principal Coordinate Analysis (PCoA), and biplots. The VENSIM PLE x64 version 9.1.1 was used to model energy consumption dynamics. Results indicate that most ICT firms are micro and small enterprises focused on software development and e-commerce, employing highly skilled personnel. Energy use is concentrated in computing and printing equipment, with limited reliance on climate control systems. While 93% of firms express environmental awareness, fewer than 10% have formal energy efficiency policies. Financial constraints and limited access to efficient equipment are the main barriers to improved energy management. The study concludes that, despite a moderate energy profile, there is an urgent need to strengthen internal energy practices. The findings offer a contextualized framework to guide energy policy and organizational strategies, contributing to more resilient and sustainable urban ICT ecosystems. Full article

Noncontact Gesture-Based Switch Improves Communication Speed and Social Function in Advanced Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy: A Case Report

Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) enables digital access for individuals with severe motor impairment. Conventional contact-based switches rely on residual voluntary movement, limiting efficiency. We report the clinical application of a novel, researcher-developed noncontact assistive switch, the Augmentative Alternative Gesture Interface (AAGI), in a 39-year-old male with late-stage Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) retaining minimal motion. The AAGI converts subtle, noncontact gestures into digital inputs, enabling efficient computer operations. Before intervention, the participant used a conventional mechanical switch, achieving 12 characters per minute (CPM) in a 2 min text entry task and was unable to perform high-speed ICT tasks such as gaming or video editing. After 3 months of AAGI use, the input speed increased to 30 CPM (+2.5-fold), and previously inaccessible tasks became feasible. The System Usability Scale (SUS) improved from 82.5 to 90.0, indicating enhanced usability, whereas the Short Form 36 (SF-36) Social Functioning (+13) and Mental Health (+4) demonstrated meaningful gains. Daily living activities remained stable. This case demonstrates that the AAGI system, developed by our group can substantially enhance communication efficiency, usability, and social engagement in advanced DMD, highlighting its potential as a practical, patient-centered AAC solution that extends digital accessibility to individuals with severe motor disabilities.
