Ongoing changes in the distribution and abundance of several tick species of medical relevance in Canada have prompted the development of the eTick platform—an image-based crowd-sourcing public surveillance tool for Canada enabling rapid tick species identification by trained personnel, and public health guidance based on tick species and province of residence of the submitter. Considering that more than 100,000 images from over 73,500 identified records representing 25 tick species have been submitted to eTick since the public launch in 2018, a partial automation of the image processing workflow could save substantial human resources, especially as submission numbers have been steadily increasing since 2021. In this study, we evaluate an end-to-end artificial intelligence (AI) pipeline to support tick identification from eTick user-submitted images, characterized by heterogeneous quality and uncontrolled acquisition conditions. Our framework integrates (i) tick localization using a fine-tuned YOLOv7 object detection model, (ii) resolution enhancement of cropped images via super-resolution Generative Adversarial Networks (RealESRGAN and SwinIR), and (iii) image classification using deep convolutional (ResNet-50) and transformer-based (ViT) architectures across three datasets (12, 6, and 3 classes) of decreasing granularities in terms of taxonomic resolution, tick life stage, and specimen viewing angle. ViT consistently outperformed ResNet-50, especially in complex classification settings. The configuration yielding the best performance—relying on object detection without incorporating super-resolution—achieved a macro-averaged F1-score exceeding 86% in the 3-class model (Dermacentor sp., other species, bad images), with minimal critical misclassifications (0.7% of “other species” misclassified as Dermacentor). Given that Dermacentor ticks represent more than 60% of tick volume submitted on the eTick platform, the integration of a low granularity model in the processing workflow could save significant time while maintaining very high standards of identification accuracy. Our findings highlight the potential of combining modern AI methods to facilitate efficient and accurate tick image processing in community science platforms, while emphasizing the need to adapt model complexity and class resolution to task-specific constraints. Since its emergence in the United States in February 2022, Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) H5N1 has caused significant losses for poultry operations, particularly in Iowa between February 2022 and December 2023. Branta canadensis (Canada goose), an abundant North American waterfowl species, is considered a potential reservoir host for H5N1. This study examined the relationship between Canada goose abundance and H5N1 occurrence in Iowa counties. Although counties with H5N1 cases comprised 13% of the state’s Canada goose population—and 32% of those counties had high goose abundance—an inverse relationship was observed. Bivariate analysis indicated that counties with high goose abundance were significantly less likely to report HPAI cases (χ2 = 4.29, p = 0.04). Notably, intermediate goose abundance was associated with a 79% lower likelihood of HPAI occurrence (RR = 0.21, 95% CI [0.05, 0.90], p = 0.04). These findings highlight the limitations posed by the lack of accessible, high-resolution poultry farm location data, which hinders a definitive understanding of Canada geese’s role in H5N1 transmission. To address this gap, stakeholders should consider adopting next-generation surveillance tools like the Biothreats Emergence Analysis and Communication Network (BEACON) AI platform, or AI-integrated chemical sensors that generate real-time, actionable data for biosecurity decision-making. Given the uncertainty surrounding Canada goose role transmission dynamics, the species remains a relevant One Health concern. Full article

Antibiotic resistance is a silent global crisis intensified by the recent pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). To address this growing threat, wastewater-based surveillance (WBS) is emerging as a promising public health tool for monitoring antibiotic resistance within communities. Our meta-analysis aims to reveal the landscape of antibiotic-resistance genes (ARGs) in global wastewater during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. The analysis included wastewater samples collected between 2020 and 2024 from five countries across three continents: Asia (China), Europe (United Kingdom and Russia), and North America (United States and Canada). Our findings showed higher observed ARGs in Russia and China despite their small sample size, while the USA showed more diverse ARGs. Distinct patterns of ARGs were observed in European and North American wastewater samples (p-value < 0.001). We identified 2483 ARGs, with multidrug-resistant (MDR) genes dominating most regions and accounting for almost 45% of all ARGs detected in Europe. Country-specific indicator ARGs showed 22 unique ARGs for Russia, 3 for each of the UK and Canada, and 2 were specific for China. Continentally, 100 indicator ARGs were specific to Asia, 38 to Europe, and 18 to North America. These findings highlight the regional variations in ARG profiles, emphasizing the urgent need for region-specific strategies to combat antibiotic-resistance threat. Additionally, our study further supports the value of WBS as a valuable public health tool for monitoring antibiotic resistance. Full article

Foodborne parasitic diseases represent a major threat to public health. Trichinellosis, caused by the nematode parasite Trichinella spp., is one of the most important foodborne diseases, while alariosis, caused by the trematode parasite Alaria spp., is less common in humans, and rare cases have been reported only in the USA and Canada. Both parasites can infect humans via the consumption of raw or undercooked wild boar meat. In order to investigate the prevalence of these parasites in wild boar meat in Greece, samples from the diaphragm pillars and the region of the mandibular angle from 128 wild boars, hunted in Greece, were collected. The samples were examined by classical parasitological (compression, artificial digestion, and Alaria spp. migration) and by molecular (real-time PCR) methods. For Trichinella spp. an existent real-time PCR detecting all species likely to be present in Greece was applied, while for Alaria spp. a real-time PCR was developed, employing an LNA TaqMan probe targeting the large subunit ribosomal RNA gene. All examined wild boar samples from Greece resulted negative for Trichinella and Alaria species, indicating a low prevalence of infection in the examined population. The novel real-time PCR for Alaria spp. has 81.5% amplification efficiency and is able to detect 0.12 larvae per 50 g of tissue and could be utilized as a complementary to AMT diagnostic tool in surveillance. Salmonella surveillance and outbreak management is a key function of public health. Laboratories are shifting from antigenic serotype determination to molecular methods including microarray or whole genome sequencing technologies. The objective of this study was to compare the Check&Trace Salmonella™ DNA microarray (CTS), a commercially available assay with the Salmonella in silico typing resource (SISTR), which uses whole genome sequencing technology for serotyping clinical Salmonella strains in Alberta, Canada, collected over an 18-month period. A high proportion of isolates (96.3%) were successfully typed by both systems. SISTR is a powerful tool for laboratories which already have a WGS infrastructure in place, whereas smaller laboratories can benefit from a commercial microarray system and reduce the processing cost per isolate compared to traditional serotyping. The 2014 Health Canada’s Surveillance Tool, Tier System (HCST) is a nutrient profiling model developed to evaluate adherence of food choices to dietary recommendations. With the recent release of the nationally representative Canadian Community Health Survey-Nutrition (CCHS-N) 2015, this study used HCST to evaluate nutritional quality of the dietary intakes of Canadians in the CCHS-N. Dietary intakes were ascertained using 24-hour dietary recalls from Canadians adults ≥19 years (N = 13,605). Foods were categorized into four Tiers based on degree of adherence to dietary recommendations according to thresholds for sodium, total fat, saturated fats, and sugars. Tier 1 and Tier 2 represented “recommended foods”, Tier 3 represents foods to “choose less often”, and Tier 4 represented foods “not recommended”. Across all dietary reference intakes (DRI) groups, most foods were categorized as Tier 1 for Vegetable and Fruits (2.2–3.8 servings/day), Tier 2 for Grain Products (2.9–3.4 servings/day), Tier 3 for Milk and Alternatives (0.7–1 serving/day) or for Meat and Alternatives (1.1–1.6 servings/day). Consumption of foods from Tier 4 and “other foods” such as high fat/sugary foods, sugar-sweetened beverages, and alcohol, represented 24–26% and 21–23% kcal/day, for males and females, respectively. Canadians are eating more foods categorized as Tier 1–3, rather than Tier 4. Adults with the highest intakes of Tier 4 and “other foods” had lower intakes of macronutrients and increased body mass index. These findings can be used by policy makers to assist in identifying targets for food reformulation at the nutrient level and quantitative guidance to support healthy food choices. Full article

Prenatal alcohol exposure is a leading cause of disability, and a major public health concern in Canada. There are well-documented barriers for women and for service providers related to asking about alcohol use in pregnancy. Confidential research is important for learning about alcohol use before, during and after pregnancy, in order to inform fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) prevention strategies. The Research Advancement through Cohort Cataloguing and Harmonization (ReACH) initiative provides a unique opportunity to leverage the integration of the Canadian pregnancy and birth cohort information regarding women’s drinking during pregnancy. In this paper, we identify: The data that can be collected using formal validated alcohol screening tools; the data currently collected through Canadian provincial/territorial perinatal surveillance efforts; and the data currently collected in the research context from 12 pregnancy cohorts in the ReACH Catalogue. We use these findings to make recommendations for data collection about women’s alcohol use by future pregnancy cohorts, related to the frequency and quantity of alcohol consumed, the number of drinks consumed on an occasion, any alcohol consumption before pregnancy, changes in use since pregnancy recognition, and the quit date. Leveraging the development of a Canadian standard to measure alcohol consumption is essential to facilitate harmonization and co-analysis of data across cohorts, to obtain more accurate data on women’s alcohol use and also to inform FASD prevention strategies. With the rapid development and broad applications of next-generation sequencing platforms and bioinformatic analytical tools, genomics has become a popular area for biosurveillance and international scientific collaboration. Governments from countries including the United States (US), Canada, Germany, and the United Kingdom have leveraged these advancements to support international cooperative programs that aim to reduce biological threats and build scientific capacity worldwide. A recent conference panel addressed the impacts of the enhancement of genomic sequencing capabilities through three major US bioengagement programs on international scientific engagement and biosecurity risk reduction. The panel contrasted the risks and benefits of supporting the enhancement of genomic sequencing capabilities through international scientific engagement to achieve biological threat reduction and global health security. The lower costs and new bioinformatic tools available have led to the greater application of sequencing to biosurveillance. Strengthening sequencing capabilities globally for the diagnosis and detection of infectious diseases through mutual collaborations has a high return on investment for increasing global health security. International collaborations based on genomics and shared sequence data can build and leverage scientific networks and improve the timeliness and accuracy of disease surveillance reporting needed to identify and mitigate infectious disease outbreaks and comply with international norms. Further efforts to promote scientific transparency within international collaboration will improve trust, reduce threats, and promote global health security. Full article

Canadians’ food purchases consist largely of packaged processed and ultra-processed products, which typically fall outside the “core” foods recommended by Canada’s Food Guide (CFG). Almost half of packaged products in Canada carry nutrition marketing (i.e., nutrient content and health claims). This study assessed whether packaged foods carrying nutrition marketing align with recommendations outlined in the 2007 CFG. Label data (n = 9376) were extracted from the 2013 Food Label Information Program (FLIP). Label components (including nutrition marketing) were classified using the International Network for Food and Obesity/NCDs Research, Monitoring and Action Support (INFORMAS) labelling taxonomy. The Health Canada Surveillance Tool (HCST) was used to assess the alignment of products to CFG. Each food or beverage was classified into one of five groups (i.e., Tier 1, Tier 2, Tier 3, Tier 4, “Others”). Products in Tier 1, 2 or water were considered “in line with CFG”. Most products in the analyzed sample were classified as Tier 2 (35%) and Tier 3 (27%). Although foods with nutrition marketing were significantly more likely to align to CFG recommendations (p < 0.001), many products not “in line with CFG” still carried nutrition marketing. This study provides important baseline data that could be used upon the implementation of the new CFG. Full article

The 2014 Health Canada Surveillance Tool (HCST) was developed to assess adherence of dietary intakes with Canada’s Food Guide. HCST classifies foods into one of four Tiers based on thresholds for sodium, total fat, saturated fat and sugar, with Tier 1 representing the healthiest and Tier 4 foods being the unhealthiest. This study presents the first application of HCST to assess (a) dietary patterns of Canadians; and (b) applicability of this tool as a measure of diet quality among 19,912 adult participants of Canadian Community Health Survey 2.2. Findings indicated that even though most of processed meats and potatoes were Tier 4, the majority of reported foods in general were categorized as Tiers 2 and 3 due to the adjustable lenient criteria used in HCST. Moving from the 1st to the 4th quartile of Tier 4 and “other” foods/beverages, there was a significant trend towards increased calories (1876 kcal vs. 2290 kcal) and “harmful” nutrients (e.g., sodium) as well as decreased “beneficial” nutrients. Compliance with the HCST was not associated with lower body mass index. Future nutrient profiling systems need to incorporate both “positive” and “negative” nutrients, an overall score and a wider range of nutrient thresholds to better capture food product differences.
