Sustainable transport innovation often faces funding gaps, as traditional public and private sources rarely support early-stage or high-risk initiatives. Crowdfunding, enabled by digital transformation, is emerging as a complementary financing mechanism for this sector. This study presents a literature review combined with bibliometric mapping to examine the evolving research landscape on crowdfunding in transport. Three research questions guide the analysis: RQ1—What are the dominant research areas at the intersection of crowdfunding and transport? RQ2—What types of transport projects are financed via crowdfunding? RQ3—What research gaps and future directions emerge for transport innovation financing? Findings reveal three core research areas: (1) Sustainability and finance, (2) Fintech and blockchain, and (3) Management and consumer behavior. We propose a typology of crowdfunded transport projects comprising five categories: (1) Large-scale transport infrastructure, (2) Sustainable local mobility, (3) Innovative start-ups, (4) New business models, and (5) Advanced systems and technologies. This demonstrates crowdfunding’s versatility beyond traditional infrastructure, supporting high-risk innovations critical for decarbonization and technological transformation. The study highlights domain-specific challenges—such as integrating PPP models with digital finance and ensuring investor protection—and emphasizes crowdfunding’s role as an enabler of low-carbon transition aligned with global climate strategies (EU Green Deal, SDGs). Despite its potential, investor safety remains a major concern. Policy implications include sandbox regulation, standardized risk assessment, and operationalizing PPP–crowdfunding hybrids to unlock large-scale and innovative transport projects. Full article

Forests are crucial for achieving carbon neutrality and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This study contributes to SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 15 (Life on Land) by constructing a comprehensive evaluation system for high-quality forestry development (HQDF), integrating economic efficiency, ecological functions, and social benefits. Using provincial panel data for China from 2010 to 2023 and applying two-way fixed effects, panel quantile regression, and instrumental-variable methods, we examine the catalytic role of green finance. The results show that green finance significantly promotes HQDF and displays an inverted U-shaped effect over the development cycle. Regional heterogeneity is marked: the strongest effects appear in western and southern China, moderate effects in central regions, and negative effects in some eastern and northern provinces. Among specific instruments, green investment and green bonds exert the largest positive impacts, followed by green insurance and fiscal funds, while green credit plays an important role at particular stages. These findings provide evidence from a major emerging economy and offer practical guidance for optimizing forestry-related green finance strategies worldwide. Full article

The increasing emphasis on environmental protection, climate change mitigation, and the transition to a circular economy requires industries, including the wood-processing sector, to integrate sustainability into strategic and operational management. Green growth indicators represent essential tools for evaluating the environmental, economic, and social impacts of business activities, while also contributing to the sustainable economics and responsible management of forest resources and products. This study applies a qualitative research design using structured interviews with 10 executives from medium and large woodworking enterprises in Slovakia. The interviews examined company strategies, practices, and challenges in sustainable development and forest resource utilization. The findings reveal that while many companies actively manage waste, invest in green technologies, and conduct internal audits, the broader implementation of environmental management systems and the uptake of public sustainability funding remain limited. Notably, 90% of respondents emphasized waste volume and recovery rates as critical indicators. Based on the results, a set of green growth indicators was developed and categorized across key thematic areas including waste management, energy efficiency, stakeholder communication, certification, and strategic planning. These indicators not only support the assessment of corporate sustainability but also strengthen efficient forest resource management, responsible use of raw materials, and the long-term economic viability of the sector. The study highlights the importance of systematically designed and practically applicable indicators for guiding companies toward sustainable competitiveness and emphasizes the need for stronger institutional support, improved access to reliable data, and integration of sustainability metrics into core business decision-making. The rapid economic growth in major coal-consuming countries has often come at the cost of environmental quality and social well-being. This study is urgently needed to provide empirical evidence on how such growth impacts sustainable development, helping policymakers balance economic progress with environmental protection and social welfare in an era of increasing climate concerns. Despite growing attention on sustainability, few studies have examined how key economic-environmental transformation drivers, such as coal consumption, financial development, globalization, urbanization, and economic growth, affect social sustainability. This study addresses this gap by analyzing the impact of these drivers on social sustainability in the world’s leading coal-consuming countries, as classified by Global Firepower. Using data from ten major coal-consuming nations between 1991 and 2022, sourced from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), KOF Swiss Economic Institute, the BP Statistical Review of World Energy, the World Bank’s World Development Indicators (WDIs), and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the study applies advanced estimation techniques, including the Augmented Mean Group (AMG) and Feasible Generalized Least Squares (FGLS), to address cross-sectional dependence and slope heterogeneity. The results indicate that coal consumption has a negative and significant effect on social sustainability. In contrast, financial development, globalization, urbanization, and economic growth all show positive and significant effects. These findings highlight the urgent need for deliberate policy reforms to support a socially inclusive energy transition. Policymakers in major coal-consuming countries should invest in clean energy, fund worker retraining and community health, promote green innovation, and encourage private sector and stakeholder collaboration for a just, sustainable transition. Such measures are vital for coal-dependent countries to balance economic progress with social well-being. This study is the first to quantify social sustainability using the HDI, addressing a gap in the literature concerning the relationship between coal consumption and social development, thereby providing a quantitative basis for formulating policies that balance equity and decarbonization. Islands and island communities are often perceived as homogenous in mainstream discourse. While many islands share characteristics, such as smallness or isolation, these are experienced differently across and within island contexts and intersect with spatial, socio-cultural, political, and economic landscapes. The concept of islandness is developed to both understand shared island characteristics and their differences across places, communities, and situations. This makes islandness highly relevant to discussions of green transitions as it highlights the need to examine the diverse, intersecting, and local realities that might interfere with green citizenship. However, analytical approaches to islandness are limited, with few spatial, scalable, and transferable frameworks available. This paper argues that spatial microsimulation offers a productive way to engage with islandness using the case of climate change and environmental attitudes across Iceland. We present the SimIceland model, developed within the EU-funded project PHOENIX: The Rise of Citizens’ Voices for a Greener Europe. The model is developed to better understand how Iceland’s citizens’ feel about climate change by taking socio-cultural, environmental, and different geographical administrative regions into account. Through a simple example of an analytical demonstration, we show how this model can support a deeper understanding of islandness in the specific context of climate attitudes in Iceland. Furthermore, we discuss how the model can contribute to public participation initiatives. The model and data are open access, and we conclude by inviting further developments and the use of spatial microsimulation to explore islandness, green citizenship, and participatory approaches to sustainability in island contexts. This systematic review synthesizes evidence on economic instruments that mobilize renewable-energy investment in emerging economies, analyzing 50 peer-reviewed studies published between 2015 and 2025 under PRISMA 2020. We advance an Institutional Capacity Integration Framework that ties instrument efficacy to regulatory, market, and coordination capabilities. Green bonds have mobilized roughly USD 500 billion yet work only where robust oversight and liquid markets exist, offering limited gains for decentralized access. Direct subsidies cut renewable electricity costs by 30–50% and connect 45 million people across varied contexts, but pose fiscal–sustainability risks. Carbon pricing schemes remain rare given their administrative complexity, while multilateral climate funds show moderate effectiveness (coefficients 0.3–0.8) dependent on national coordination strength. Bibliometric mapping with Bibliometrix reveals three fragmented paradigms—market efficiency, state intervention, and international cooperation—and highlights geographic gaps: sub-Saharan Africa represents just 16% of studies despite acute financing barriers. Sixty-eight percent of articles employ descriptive designs, constraining causal inference and reflecting tensions between SDG 7 (affordable energy) and SDG 13 (climate action). Our framework rejects one-size-fits-all prescriptions, recommending phased, context-aligned pathways that progressively build capacity. Policymakers should tailor instrument mixes to institutional realities, and researchers must prioritize causal methods and underrepresented regions through focused initiatives for equitable global progress. The increasing recognition of historical emissions and uneven financial capacities among developed and developing nations has highlighted the need to look for equity and fairness in global climate action. This study aims to present a revised method that enables mapping the current state of fairness in the global energy transition, addressing both the contribution to the climate crisis and the burden that different countries face in coping with the climate disasters resulting from it. For this purpose, we revise various methods and indices used to measure the progress of energy transition efforts, as well as existing methodologies to appraise the responsibility for climate change and the resulting financial capacity. We propose changes to the existing methods to allow for a clearer analysis of the fairness of the global energy transition. An exemplary use of the proposed modified methodology is applied to six countries that represent developing and developed countries using publicly available data from renowned sources such as IRENA, EM-DAT, and the World Bank, showing the applicability of the method. The main trends in the results highlight the added value of the proposed method. The progress in the energy transition is evaluated in terms of fairness as a transition index by taking into account historical responsibility and financial capacity. Damage from climate-induced disasters and contribution towards climate financing are added as contextual considerations. The country’s historical emissions, GDP, NDC, financial costs of climate-induced disaster, and financing from the Green Climate Fund are used as the basis for the analysis. The findings underscore the differences in energy transition achievement, as well as the differences in pledged and deposited funds among various types of countries. The results demonstrate a disproportionate burden experienced by lower-income nations and depict the ongoing challenges in translating principles of “common but differentiated responsibilities” into concrete outcomes. This study provides an open-source and data-driven perspective that highlights the need for change in global policy discourse and also advocates for the creation of more nuanced, just, and effective approaches to accelerate the clean energy transition worldwide. Climate change is the biggest global health threat of the 21st century. However, this challenge presents an opportunity to do things differently. This paper sets out how, using a design-led and collaborative approach, one can re-imagine the delivery of healthcare itself in a way that will deliver environmental sustainability. The paper presents a series of eight projects at the intersections of design, health and wellbeing, and complex net zero challenges, with an emphasis on inclusive, equitable, and sustainable design-led interventions. This encompasses diverse interventions across and beyond conventional design boundaries such as architecture, product design, and textile design providing insights that demonstrate the impact of design thinking, making, and acting on real-world net zero issues. Addressing such a broad and complex topic requires engagement across a wide range of stakeholders. The work undertaken has been conducted as part of a UK Government-funded Green Transition Ecosystem (GTE) Hub that has allowed multiple academic disciplines, research organisations, regional and local industry, and other public sector stakeholders, to connect with policy makers. Across seven themes, the paper describes how Design HOPES (Healthy Organisations in a Place-based Ecosystem, Scotland), as a design-led GTE Hub, brings in multiple and marginalised perspectives and how its design-led projects as one part of a wider movement for transformational change can re-use, nurture and develop these interventions sustainably. The overarching ambition being, through our collaborative design-led thinking, making, and acting, to build a more equitable and sustainable health and social care system across Scotland. Cancer clinical trials contribute significantly to healthcare-related greenhouse gas emissions, highlighting the need to address sustainability in this area as the climate crisis intensifies. This study provides the first national assessment of sustainability awareness, attitudes, and practices within the Irish cancer clinical trials community. A 21-item cross-sectional survey was distributed to 613 cancer research professionals affiliated with Cancer Trials Ireland, including clinicians, research nurses, trial coordinators, patient advocates and industry staff, yielding a 20.6% response rate. Survey items assessed awareness of sustainability tools, perceived carbon contributors, training received, confidence in implementing green practices, and perceived barriers and enablers to sustainability. Awareness of existing carbon footprint tools was low, with only 21% familiar with the Sustainable Clinical Trials Group guidelines and fewer than 6% aware of the National Institute for Health and Care Research calculator. Despite limited training and low confidence in implementing carbon-reductive measures, 86% of respondents expressed willingness to engage with sustainability initiatives. Trial-related travel, sample kit waste, and trial set-up were perceived as the highest contributors to emissions, though perceptions did not always align with published data. Key barriers included lack of education, institutional support, and regulatory clarity, while financial incentives and training were identified as enablers. Coordinated, system-wide interventions are needed to embed sustainability into cancer clinical trial design, governance, and funding processes. Full article

As various sectors of the world are grappling with various sustainability challenges, there is an urgent need to seek ways to find sustainable ways of dealing with some of these global challenges. Ecotourism has been seen as an avenue for addressing some of the sustainability challenges facing the tourism industry. Most tourism enterprises have adopted ecotourism principles. This study examines the evolution of ecotourism marketing to identify the key concepts and critical debates within this terrain. In this regard, this study also seeks to identify knowledge gaps and future research directions. Using bibliometric data from Web of Science-indexed publications between 2003 and 2025, this study found that ecotourism marketing has been a growing field of research, which is highly cited across fields. The study found that ecotourism marketing covers a wide range of aspects, including digital marketing, destination branding, sustainable marketing, and demand-side considerations in ecotourism marketing. Ecotourism marketing, in many respects, is equally concerned with how ecotourism establishments embrace the current challenges of climate change from a climate change mitigation, adaptation, and resilience perspective to ensure sustainability. There are several research gaps and directions with respect to ecotourism marketing, some of which could cover various aspects in the future, such as examining the role of new technologies, social influencers, and funding in ecotourism marketing. There is an equal need to understand how various generations view the whole concept of green tourism to inform segmentation and better market positioning. Full article

As Saudi Arabia accelerates its Vision 2030 agenda, sustainable urban development has emerged as a critical pillar for economic diversification and climate resilience. This study investigates the role of green municipal bonds (GMBs) as a catalytic financing tool to address funding gaps in low-carbon infrastructure and renewable energy projects within the Kingdom’s arid, fossil-fuel-dependent context. Employing a mixed-methods approach—combining qualitative case studies of global best practices (e.g., Gothenburg, Cape Town) and quantitative analysis of Saudi municipal financial data—we evaluate the feasibility of GMBs in bridging fiscal shortfalls while aligning with environmental, social, and governance (ESG) criteria. The research introduces a novel conceptual framework that integrates regulatory harmonization, stakeholder coordination, and Shariah-compliant financial mechanisms, tailored to Saudi Arabia’s socio-economic and climatic realities. Key findings reveal that GMBs could cover 40% of municipal revenue gaps, attract global ESG investors, and reduce carbon emissions by 30% through projects such as NEOM’s renewable grids and Riyadh’s urban greening initiatives. By addressing underexplored intersections of fossil-fuel transitions, arid-climate governance, and Islamic finance, this study advances sustainable urban scholarship and offers actionable policy recommendations, including a phased roadmap for GMB adoption and the establishment of a Saudi Green Bond Taskforce. The results position Saudi Arabia as a regional leader in climate-resilient finance, providing replicable insights for resource-dependent economies pursuing carbon neutrality. Full article

The Green Climate Fund (GCF) is mandated to undertake evidence-based and impactful climate change mitigation/adaptation projects in vulnerable countries. However, project effectiveness has often been questioned by some experts and countries. This study investigates recent trends and characteristics of GCF funding practices with the focus on project cost-effectiveness. Data were collected from GCF’s single-country project documents from 2016 to 2023. Given the potential contribution mangrove forest-rich tropical countries like Bangladesh can make to CO2 emission reduction through forest conservation, this research attempts to highlight forest/mangrove-related projects. These data were then analyzed by sectors, project themes, financing types, and cost-effectiveness in terms of local economic benefits and CO2 emission reduction. This investigation revealed that among a total of USD 7.5 billion GCF investment or 187 single-country projects for 89 countries, the investment in forests and land use was found to be one of the most cost effective among other sectors for both adaptation and mitigation although only six dedicated mangrove forest projects were undertaken. Despite the 50-50 rule for funding mitigation and adaptation efforts, GCF projects were focused more on mitigation, especially the energy sector. For Bangladesh, the third largest GCF investment destination in Asia after Mongolia and India, the conservation of the Sundarbans mangrove forest, the largest in the world, received only scant attention whereas vegetation reduction has raised serious concerns in the area. Two GCF projects that are relevant to Bangladesh’s mangrove-dependent communities emphasized livelihood developments for non-mangrove-dependent communities. Full article

Cities are facing the combined effects of multiple challenges, e.g., climate change, biodiversity, pollution, and lacking resources. Synergic innovative solutions are required to simultaneously address them while also considering their social impacts. In this context, the TALEA—Green Cells Leading the Green Transition project, funded by the European Urban Initiative, called Greening Cities (EUI02-064)—aims to tackle urban climate challenges in Bologna (Italy) by mitigating Urban Heat Islands (UHI) and Urban Heat Waves (UHW) through an innovative, nature-based, and data-driven approach. TALEA introduces the TALEA Green Cells (TGCs) concept, modular spatial units that integrate nature-based solutions, creative technological innovation, real-time environmental monitoring, and citizen-science-driven data collection within a broader green infrastructure strategy (Bologna Verde project). TGCs bridge the physical and digital dimensions of urban planning: at the macroscale, they contribute to restoring a continuous urban green corridor; at the microscale, they regenerate underused urban spaces, transforming them into climate shelters and hubs for community engagement. A key feature of TALEA is its digital innovation ecosystem, which integrates data from different sources, including remote sensing, sensors, and citizen-generated inputs, within the Systemic Urban Observation Atlas, the Smart Innovation Package and the Digital Twin that the city of Bologna is developing. These tools enable data-driven decision-making, supporting both urban planners and local communities in designing resilient, adaptive, and inclusive urban environments. The scalability and transferability potential of this integrated approach is tested through its real implementation in three Bologna urban pilots. Full article

This study explores how university students’ engagement in sustainability-themed extracurricular activities influences their awareness of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Given the critical role of higher education in advancing sustainability, this research assesses initiatives such as environmental action clubs, sustainability research, eco-innovations, green campuses, and training workshops for fostering awareness, engagement, and leadership. A cross-sectional quantitative design targeted 400 university students in Greece involved in sustainability-related extracurricular activities. Structured online questionnaires were used, and multiple regression analysis examined the relationship between extracurricular activities and SDG engagement. The findings highlighted that all five activity types significantly enhance students’ sustainability awareness. Environmental action clubs improve knowledge of climate change and waste reduction, while research projects strengthen engagement with renewable energy and climate resilience. Eco-innovation challenges foster problem solving and interdisciplinary collaboration, particularly in urban and industrial sustainability. Green campus initiatives promote practical sustainable strategies, and capacity-building programs develop leadership and teamwork skills. Extracurricular activities serve as transformative tools that bridge theoretical knowledge with real-world sustainability applications, equipping students with the mindset and skills to address global challenges. Universities and policymakers should enhance funding, digital integration, and collaborations to expand the reach of these programs. Future research should assess the long-term impact of student participation on sustainable behavior and broader societal well-being. Full article

Urban afforestation is a key strategy for combating climate change and enhancing urban living by reducing carbon emissions and improving air quality. Reflecting these priorities, Italy’s National Ecological Transition Plan (NETP), led by the Ministry of Ecological Transition (MiTE), introduced the National Urban Forestry Plan to accelerate sustainability and resilience in urban areas. This plan focuses on reducing carbon emissions, enhancing natural capital through reforestation, and promoting Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) for climate adaptation. Our study aligns with this framework by exploring how local urban forestry initiatives support the NETP’s objectives, providing a concrete example of policy implementation. Genoa (Italy) serves as a compelling case study. In 2023, the city received PNRR funding under the “Protection and Enhancement of Urban and Extra-Urban Greenery” initiative to improve air quality, restore biodiversity, and strengthen ecological corridors. Our research identifies three key areas for improvement: ecological planning, citizen engagement, and impact monitoring. We present initial findings and quantitative data, evaluating CO2 sequestration potential, communication strategies, and consider the strengths and weaknesses of the specific context. These findings highlight the need for further investigation to optimize and communicate urban greening efforts. Full article
