Romantic relationships are central to adult life, yet contemporary social, cultural, and technological transformations have reshaped how individuals navigate intimacy. This study examines how Greek millennials conceptualize short- and long-term romantic relationships, situating partner preferences and relational strategies at the intersection of evolutionary predispositions, cultural scripts, and digital mediation. Using a qualitative design grounded in social constructionism, ten heterosexual Greek millennials aged 27–42 were recruited via convenience and snowball sampling. Semi-structured interviews explored traits prioritized in partners, self-presentation strategies, and the influence of social and digital contexts. Reflexive thematic analysis identified three main themes: (1) Gendered Moral Economies of Long-Term Partnership, (2) Negotiating Social Scripts in a Digitally Mediated and Disillusioned Context, and (3) Conditional Commitment and the Stratification of Intimacy. The findings indicate that while some partner preferences align with Sexual Strategies Theory, they are heavily mediated by patriarchal norms, digital performativity, personal experiences of trauma, and age-related reflexivity. Short-term relationships were valued for pleasure and autonomy yet morally differentiated from long-term commitments. Overall, the study highlights the dynamic, contextually embedded, and reflexively constructed nature of contemporary romantic strategies among Greek millennials, offering insights for evolutionary, sociocultural, and digital perspectives on intimacy. Sewage sludge management remains a critical challenge in Greece, where increasing regulatory pressure, environmental constraints, and limited stakeholder participation complicate regional decision-making. In particular, the revision of regional Waste Management Plans requires decision-support approaches that are both technically robust and socially legitimate. This study develops and applies a participatory, data-driven multi-criteria decision analysis framework to evaluate sustainable sewage sludge management strategies in the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace. The framework combines structured stakeholder participation with quantitative performance assessment, enabling transparent, reproducible, and systematic comparison of alternative sewage sludge management options. Four realistic sludge management alternatives—composting fr agriculture, forestry use, land restoration, and thermal drying with energy recovery were assessed against fifteen economic, environmental, and social sub-criteria. Data were collected through structured questionnaires administered to forty-four representatives from five stakeholder groups: utilities (water and sewerage service providers), local authorities, scientists/experts, end-users, and citizens. Group preferences were aggregated using equal group weighting to ensure balanced representation. The results show that environmental and economic criteria outweigh social aspects. The highest mean weights were assigned to compliance with environmental requirements for products derived from the disposal method (0.105) and compliance with stricter national environmental legislation (0.104), followed by energy intensity (0.097), installation cost (0.065), and operation and maintenance (O&M) cost (0.061). Overall rankings identified composting and thermal drying as the most preferred options, followed by land restoration and forestry use; sensitivity analysis (±10% variation in sub-criterion weights) confirmed ranking stability. The proposed framework enhances decision transparency by embedding measurable criteria and stakeholder inputs within a structured analytical process. From a policy perspective, it addresses participation gaps in Greek waste planning and offers a transferable decision-support tool for future regional planning. Further extensions may include integration with life cycle assessment and cost–benefit analysis to support adaptive updates under circular economy objectives. Full article

Historically, the electricity sector in Greece was based on local lignite, which provided a stable and affordable base for electricity production. However, current European policy directions, including decarbonization and climate neutrality by 2050, have accelerated the transformation of traditional energy models, resulting in a gradual phasing-out of fossil fuels and an increasing integration of Renewable Energy Sources (RES). In line with EU policy priorities and in light of the new dynamics shaped by the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS), lignite gradually became unprofitable for the national economy, leading the Greek government to announce an accelerated lignite phase-out plan. However, the phase-out of domestic lignite, although consistent with climate objectives, rapidly increased the country’s energy dependency on natural gas and its exposure to natural gas price volatility. At the same time, increased investment in solar and wind technologies has reshaped the electricity mix; yet market design, limited system flexibility and inadequate infrastructure and storage capacity have not allowed the full utilization of RES benefits. This structural gap, in turn, raises critical questions about resilience and affordability. The paper provides evidence on these issues and offers a critical evaluation of the decarbonization pathway that has reshaped the country’s energy dependency. Full article

Iron Age settlements in the Salento peninsula (Southern Italy, 8th–6th century BC) underwent fundamental transformations in social organization, marked by the emergence of local elites through trade development and intense contacts with the Greek world. This study examines organic residue assemblages from 99 ceramic sherds from one key Iron Age site to clarify the role of locally produced ceramics—both coarse ware containers and Japigian matt-painted vessels—in commensal and beverage production practices. Chromatographic analyses identified a wide variety of animal and plant by-products, including fats, oils, waxes, and resin compounds. Integrated phytolith and starch analysis revealed evidence consistent with fermentation processes, particularly through the identification of fungal remains and damaged starch granules suggesting brewing activities in a subset of vessels. Matt-painted pottery forms—characterized by conical rims, funnel-shaped necks, bowls, and jugs—show distinctive use-alteration patterns and residue profiles associated with fermented beverage consumption and preparation in approximately 26% of the analyzed assemblage. Integrating organic residue analysis, experimental archaeology, and microfossil investigation suggests the central role of locally produced pottery in Iron Age commensal activities and status display, though alternative interpretations for some biomarker profiles cannot be excluded. This multiproxy approach demonstrates functional differentiation and consumption practices, refining interpretations of vessel use and providing new insights into food economies and social life during the Iron Age in southern Italy. The sustainable valorization of citrus processing by-products represents a key challenge for the food industry, aiming to reduce waste while recovering valuable bioactive compounds. In this study, a cloud point extraction strategy was developed using soy lecithin as a natural, food-grade surfactant to isolate phenolic antioxidants from orange juice industry residues. Response Surface Methodology was applied to two streams of orange juice by-products, to evaluate the combined effects of pH, NaCl concentration, and lecithin content on extraction efficiency, with total polyphenolic content, DPPH radical scavenging activity, and ferric reducing antioxidant power serving as response variables. Partial Least Squares (PLS) analysis was additionally employed to integrate all antioxidant responses and identify a multivariate optimum. The optimized conditions (pH 3.4, 12% NaCl, 11% lecithin) enabled maximal recovery of antioxidant constituents, highlighting the effectiveness of lecithin-based micellar systems. To assess practical applicability, the optimized extract from the oil emulsion residue (Stream A) was incorporated into tsipouro, a traditional Greek distillate, and its stability was monitored under controlled light and temperature conditions for 30 days at three concentration levels. Results demonstrated that both environmental factors significantly influenced antioxidant retention and physical stability, underscoring the importance of formulation design. Specifically, high gel concentration at 2% w/v, low temperature at 20 °C and light exposure provided the highest overall desirability for TPC, FRAP, and DPPH responses. Overall, this work introduces a green, scalable, and food-compatible extraction approach that not only supports circular economy principles but also opens new opportunities for the development of functional alcoholic beverages enriched with natural antioxidants. The agri-food sector is among the most environmentally impactful industries globally, making its shift toward sustainability a pressing priority. In response, governments—including the EU—are promoting circular economy (CE) principles across all sectors, with CE implementation serving as a key measure of policy effectiveness. The olive oil sector, while economically and culturally vital, poses significant environmental risks due to intensive resource use and problematic waste disposal. Considering resource scarcity and climate change, CE adoption—grounded in industrial ecology—is increasingly relevant. This study investigates the implementation of CE practices in Greek olive oil mills (OOMs) by evaluating the degree of circularity through tailored indicators and conducting a techno-economic analysis (TEA) of selected practices. Together, these methods offer a robust, quantitative assessment of the environmental and financial sustainability of CE initiatives within the olive oil industry. Full article

Women play a key role in Greek olive cultivation, a sector at the heart of local economies currently facing increasing pressures from climate change. This study explores gender roles, responsibilities, and access to resources shaping the adoption of sustainable agriculture practices. Through in-depth interviews with female farmers on the island of Crete, the results show that women face limited access to training and financial services as well as gender-based discrimination and the hidden caregiving and house working tasks. However, they manifest a strong openness towards sustainable practices, driven by environmental values, even among those lacking decision-making authority. Despite these challenges, women show a positive attitude toward learning and innovation, calling for more institutional support and training opportunities. This study sheds light on the need for recognition of women’s roles in agriculture, particularly in the context of climate adaptation, and offers practical recommendations to improve gender roles within the olive sector. The Lower Danube region represents a long-standing zone of interaction between indigenous communities, mobile pastoral populations, and Mediterranean colonial networks. During the Late Iron Age, such contexts have frequently been interpreted through culture-historical frameworks that emphasise socio-economic differentiation among coexisting populations. This study examines whether communities traditionally described in culturally or economically differentiated terms can instead be understood as functionally diverse social entities responding to shared environmental conditions. Three Late Iron Age (4th–3rd centuries BC) settlements from Central Dobruja (Romania), Medgidia Hellenistic 1, 2, and 3, were investigated using an integrated bioarchaeological approach combining archaeozoological and phytolith analyses. The sites are situated along a major communication corridor linking the Danube with the western Black Sea coast, colonised by the Greeks at that time. Faunal assemblages are dominated by domestic mammals, particularly cattle, caprine, and horses, indicating a pastoral economy structured around livestock management, secondary product exploitation, and varying degrees of mobility. Phytolith assemblages reveal a strong cereal signal alongside evidence for grassland exploitation, woody resource use, and wetland vegetation, reflecting mixed agro-pastoral practices embedded within a heterogeneous landscape. Taken together, the results suggest that Getae and Scythian-associated populations did not represent temporally or hierarchically differentiated socio-economic stages, but rather coexisting communities characterised by complementary subsistence practices, shaped by mobility, seasonality, and regional connectivity. This study highlights the value of bioarchaeological evidence for refining interpretations of cultural interaction and adaptive strategies in Late Iron Age Europe. Full article

This work presents the transition of Western Macedonia from a lignite-dominated energy model to a sustainable system based on renewable resources, with particular emphasis on the interlinked roles of policy, regulation, and financing. The analysis is centered on the utilization of biomass and residual waste for district heating applications, highlighting the contribution of the Just Transition Fund and the Greek Green Fund. The study also evaluates the regulatory and institutional frameworks that either support or hinder renewable energy deployment, while embedding the principles of circular economy and cross-border cooperation. The insights derived serve as a reference point for regions undergoing similar post-coal transitions, offering a comprehensive roadmap for sustainable energy integration underpinned by policy alignment and financial cohesion. Ports are crucial nodes in global supply chains, and are critical infrastructures for the execution of global trade and components of the Blue Economy; however, they are highly vulnerable to climate change implications, especially for insular countries like Greece. This study investigates port stakeholder perceptions, priorities, and preparedness for climate risks through field research with the use of questionnaires and in-depth interviews. The findings reveal a strong recognition of climate change threats—especially extreme weather conditions—but limited institutional capacity for adaptation. Key needs include targeted funding, regulatory clarity, and specialized environmental units. National coordination remains weak, with climate change often framed in economic rather than systemic terms. Smaller ports face greater exposure yet fewer resources. The results highlight governance gaps, emphasizing the need for integrated, stakeholder-informed strategies to enhance port resilience and ensure alignment with EU climate directives. This research provides evidence-based insights to guide policy development and foster adaptive capacity in the Greek port sector. Full article

Deposit Refund Systems (DRS) are widely adopted in many European countries as effective mechanisms for increasing recycling rates and promoting circular-economy practices. Greece is currently preparing for the introduction of a national DRS for beverage containers, a transition expected to reshape existing waste-management structures. This study investigates the systemic challenges that may hinder the successful implementation of the upcoming Greek DRS. Focusing exclusively on polyethylene terephthalate (PET), aluminum, and glass beverage containers, this study adopts a multi-stakeholder qualitative approach involving 28 semi-structured interviews with beverage producers, retailers, recyclers, logistics actors, consumer representatives, and regulatory authorities. Thematic analysis reveals four interdependent barriers: restricted consumer accessibility due to uneven distribution of return infrastructure; fragmented governance and unclear institutional responsibilities; weak coordination and operational misalignment among supply-chain actors; and low consumer participation shaped by behavioral and cultural factors. These findings underscore that Greece’s DRS readiness is constrained not by technological limitations but by systemic gaps in governance, infrastructure planning, and stakeholder collaboration. This study contributes to the DRS literature by providing one of the first pre-implementation, multi-actor assessments in a Southern European context and offers policy-relevant insights to support an effective, equitable, and transparent rollout of the national DRS. This study develops an updated national Social Accounting Matrix (SAM) for Greece, based on the 2020 Input–Output Table that captures post-crisis structural and macroeconomic transformations, implemented in Python 3, hence producing a reusable, modular code. This methodological approach facilitates multiplier-based policy analysis of how shocks propagate through the Greek economy, and therefore, this study contributes to the literature by addressing the gap in multiplier analysis for this setting. Output, value-added, and income multipliers were estimated using the Moore–Penrose pseudo-inverse via Singular Value Decomposition (SVD). Findings highlighted the substantial role of government transfers in supporting household and firm incomes, largely due to COVID-19 relief measures. This analysis showed that production expansion in energy, construction, and wholesale and retail trade can stimulate broad economic activity, while service-related sectors play a critical role in income generation and equity considerations. At the same time, firms in trade, hospitality, and real estate were heavily affected by the pandemic shock. The findings of this study provide a benchmark for understanding Greece’s economic structure at a critical moment in time (the COVID-19 pandemic). Full article

The spatial configuration of Waste-to-Energy infrastructure plays a decisive role in determining the environmental and economic performance of municipal solid waste (MSW) management systems. This study applies a Life Cycle Assessment methodology to evaluate the environmental implications of centralized and decentralized siting strategies for Refuse-Derived Fuel utilization in Greece. Two alternative scenarios were modeled: (i) a centralized approach based on six large WtE plants as proposed by the Greek Ministry of Environment and Energy (gr. YPEN), and (ii) a decentralized approach involving smaller, regionally distributed units located closer to Recycling and Recovery Facilities. Using the SimaPro software and the ReCiPe method, environmental impacts were quantified across categories including global warming potential, acidification, eutrophication, and particulate matter formation. The results indicate that the decentralized scenario yields substantial environmental advantages, with reductions ranging from 33% to 45% across all impact categories and displaying a 35% decrease in CO2-equivalent emissions compared to the centralized scenario. Economic analysis confirms these findings, showing a 31% reduction in total transport and emissions-related costs due primarily to minimized long-distance and maritime transport. The study concludes that decentralized RDF-to-energy systems offer a more balanced and sustainable pathway, enhancing operational flexibility, lowering environmental burdens, and improving social acceptance. These results underscore the importance of integrating spatial and logistical parameters in national WtE planning to align with EU waste hierarchy principles and circular economy objectives. This study investigates the influence of pressure groups on the structure of the Greek economy, emphasizing their function as intermediaries between civil society and policymaking institutions. The significance of this research lies in revealing how organized interests—operating in an environment of informal and weakly regulated lobbying—shape sectoral dynamics and policy outcomes. The central hypothesis is that sectors represented by strong and well-organized pressure groups, such as manufacturing, tourism, and public administration, exhibit higher and more stable shares of Gross Value Added (GVA) due to their lobbying capacity and institutional access. To test this hypothesis, the paper integrates qualitative institutional analysis with a quantitative econometric model based on sectoral data from 2013 to 2023. The descriptive results indicate patterns consistent with the hypothesis that organized pressure groups are associated with sectoral resilience and performance. Nevertheless, the findings also suggest that excessive or unregulated influence may distort economic allocation and weaken transparency. The study concludes that establishing clearer oversight and accountability mechanisms is essential to ensure that the role of pressure groups supports democratic integrity and balanced economic development. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has evolved from philanthropy to a strategic capability, but its role in recovering economies remains underexplored. This study examines how CSR strategies affect consumer perceptions in the Greek retail sector, where firms face fragile trust and constrained resources. Using survey data from 322 consumers, the research tested three drivers of CSR effectiveness: strategic integration into core business and community engagement, emphasis on sustainability-oriented initiatives, and localization to cultural and stakeholder expectations. Data were analyzed through exploratory factor analysis to validate the constructs, followed by hierarchical multiple regression to assess their influence on perceived CSR performance. Results showed that CSR embedded transparently into strategy had strong effects on consumers’ overall evaluations of CSR effectiveness, sustainability-oriented actions emerged as the most powerful predictor of perceived CSR performance, and localized initiatives enhanced trust and authenticity by signaling responsiveness to community needs. Perceived CSR performance was conceptualized as an integrative construct, capturing outcomes such as brand equity, consumer engagement, and loyalty in a unified evaluative measure. These findings suggest that CSR is a credible driver of consumer value even during economic recovery and that its effectiveness depends on authenticity, environmental relevance, and cultural fit. The study offers theoretical contributions by contextualizing CSR in fragile markets and provides practical guidance for retailers seeking resilience through responsible, strategically aligned practices.
