Alpine streams are increasingly exposed to multiple disturbances, including extreme flood events, expected to become more frequent under climate change, and the expansion of small hydropower plants (SHPs). Understanding the resilience of aquatic communities and the ability of biomonitoring tools to detect disturbance-driven changes is essential for ecological assessment. We conducted an eleven-year monitoring programme (2014–2024) in the Corsaglia Stream (Northwestern Italy), comprising 16 sampling campaigns before, during, and after two flood events and SHP construction. Macroinvertebrate and fish communities were analysed using taxonomic, functional, and temporal beta-diversity metrics. Macroinvertebrates were assessed using the nationally standardised STAR_ICMi biomonitoring index and the recently developed Flow-T index. Macroinvertebrate assemblages showed high resilience, recovering taxonomic richness while maintaining “Good ecological status” despite severe flood-induced collapse. Recovery followed a nestedness-to-turnover trajectory, indicating recolonization from refugia rather than community replacement. Flow-T detected transient functional changes not captured by STAR_ICMi. In contrast, fish communities exhibited persistent structural changes, with reduced abundance, marked shifts in species composition, and slower recovery of native salmonids and European bullhead (Cottus gobio) under combined flood and hydropower impacts. These findings show that integrating taxonomic, functional, and temporal approaches improves ecological assessment beyond single-index biomonitoring approaches such as STAR_ICMi alone. Full article

Introduction: Biological invasions constitute one of the main threats to freshwater ecosystems, causing significant ecological changes through the introduction of exotic species that compete with or prey upon native species. In Portugal, the introduction and spread of exotic species in lotic and lentic ecosystems, such as pike (Esox lucius), European catfish (Silurus glanis), and largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides), all top predators, may have a big impact on autochthonous species. In contrast, bleak (Alburnus alburnus), European perch (Perca fluviatilis), and common carp (Cyprinus carpio) compete aggressively for food resources. In the Sousa River basin, gudgeon (Gobio lozanoi) is considered an exotic species with potential ecological impact, with the minnow (Phoxinus phoxinus) stand having been recently identified in Portugal and, so far, recorded only in this river basin, and not yet being classified as an invasive species in Portugal. Public knowledge regarding invasive aquatic biodiversity remains a significant bottleneck for conservation. Because recreational angling is a prominent dispersal vector, initiatives that directly target this community are relevant. Objective: The aim is to carry out a bibliographic review on the exotic ichthyofauna species present in the Sousa River, with special focus on the invasion potential of the minnow (P. phoxinus). Methodology: The literature review was conducted based on the ScienceDirect, Springer Nature Link, and Fauna Norvegica databases, selecting publications between 2006 and 2025 concerning relevant studies on the potentially invasive characteristics of the minnow (P. phoxinus). The methodology is based on the analysis of studies regarding the impacts caused on riparian ecosystems. Results: The species P. phoxinus presents a generalist diet and high adaptive capacity, allowing it to colonise new habitats and compete aggressively with native species for trophic resources. Its presence is associated with negative impacts on brown trout populations (Salmo trutta), reducing growth and productivity, especially in mountain ecosystems. Increased species density also causes a significant decrease in benthic macroinvertebrate biodiversity. Studies conducted in the Douro basin indicate that the arrival of minnow in Portugal resulted from human action, probably associated with its use as live bait in recreational fishing. Conservation programmes use diverse tactics to bridge the awareness gap. Recent initiatives feature electrofishing demonstrations to visually differentiate species, theatrical performances, and even culinary show-cooking events using invasive predators like the European catfish to promote harvesting. Conclusions: The potential transition of P. phoxinus into an exotic and invasive species may be associated with the ecological pressure exerted on native communities, particularly through competition for trophic resources, highlighting the need to assess its dispersion in the Sousa basin and its impacts on fish fauna and benthic macroinvertebrates. It is important to do more sampling to understand its real distribution in the Sousa Basin. Additionally is important to explain to recreational anglers and the general population the impacts of fish transfer and the adverse effects of invasive species on freshwater Portuguese ecosystems. Introduction: Freshwater fish communities in Mediterranean basins have undergone profound changes over recent decades due to biological invasions, habitat alteration, and hydrological regulation. The Segura River basin (SE Spain), particularly in the Region of Murcia, represents a paradigmatic case of these transformations, with increasing pressures on native ichthyofauna and growing relevance for recreational fisheries. Objective: This study aims to provide an updated inventory of fish communities in the rivers and reservoirs of the Region of Murcia, assessing current composition, relative abundance, and conservation status. Methodology: Fish assemblages were surveyed during sampling campaigns conducted in autumn 2023, 2024 and 2025. Sampling sites included representative reservoirs and river reaches within the middle sector of the Segura River basin, focusing on areas of interest for recreational fishing. Passive fishing gears were used in reservoirs, while electrofishing was conducted in riverine habitats. Presence and relative abundance data were recorded for all detected taxa. Results: A total of 15 taxa were identified (8 in reservoirs and 15 in river reaches). Reservoir communities were almost entirely dominated by non-native invasive species, including Cyprinus carpio, Alburnus alburnus, Sander lucioperca, Micropterus salmoides, Lepomis gibbosus, and Gambusia holbrooki, with Luciobarbus sclateri as the only native species. Riverine sections of the main channel also showed a strong dominance of exotic taxa, with additional species such as Esox lucius, Oncorhynchus mykiss, Gobio lozanoi, and Pseudochondrostoma polylepis. Native species detected included L. sclateri (dominant), Anguilla anguilla, and Salariopsis fluviatilis, the latter showing a recent expansion likely linked to human-mediated introduction. Isolated tributaries hosted the most valuable assemblages, including populations of L. sclateri, Squalius tartessicus, and the endangered Valencia hispanica (recently unauthorized translocations into the Segura river basin). Conclusions: Current fish communities in the Region of Murcia reflect a marked ecological degradation compared to historical conditions, driven by the proliferation of non-native species and habitat alteration. Changes over the last 30 years have been particularly pronounced in reservoirs and regulated sections of the main river channel, where local extinction of the native S. tartessicus has also been detected. Only the headwaters of certain tributaries retain fish assemblages of notable conservation interest, highlighting their priority for management and protection. Full article

The use of mesocosms in stream ecology has long attracted the attention of researchers due to the clear advantages these systems offer for manipulative experiments. Despite some limitations, they provide an effective way to create semi-natural conditions in which selected parameters can be artificially controlled. This study presents the ALPSTREAM eco-hydraulic laboratory, a mesocosm system designed to mimic the conditions of an alpine stream (Ostana, NW Italy). The structure of this system is unique and consists of six 25-m-long flumes, fed directly by the Po River and equipped to regulate key hydraulic parameters. The paper describes the structure of this system and presents two case studies to illustrate some potential applications. The first aimed to analyze the impact of different aquatic insects (scrapers) on periphyton dynamics. The second tested the feasibility of the flumes for the ex situ breeding of a threatened fish species, the European bullhead (Cottus gobio L.). The purpose of this paper is to raise awareness of this facility and make it available to researchers interested in eco-hydraulic studies in mountain environments. Full article

Introduction: A diverse ichthyofauna is supported by the Lima River in northern Portugal. Despite its ecological significance, Ramsar-protected wetlands status and Natura 2000 site, the system remains among the least studied in the Iberian Peninsula. Objective: This study characterises the fish assemblage of the Lima River and some of its tributaries. It examines the composition and abundance of species, as well as key biological parameters, across the river’s freshwater and estuarine sections. Particular attention is given to the balance between native and exotic taxa, and to the threats facing the native ichthyofauna. Methodology: Between 2021 and 2023, 3242 individuals belonging to 15 species were sampled using fyke nets, trammel nets, and electrofishing at 13 sites along the river system. Results: Native species accounted for 51.1% of the total catch. This comprised resident freshwater taxa, such as Pseudochondrostoma duriense, Achondrostoma oligolepis, Luciobarbus bocagei, Squalius carolitertii, Cobitis atlantica, Gasterosteus aculeatus, and resident Salmo trutta, alongside diadromous species, namely Chelon ramada, Petromyzon marinus, Alosa spp., migrant Salmo trutta and Anguilla anguilla. Exotic species accounted for 48.9% of the total catch, with four non-native taxa being recorded: Lepomis gibbosus, Micropterus salmoides, Carassius auratus and Gobio lozanoi. This reflects the extent of the biological invasion pressure on this system. Analysis of the stomach contents of Salmo trutta revealed active predation of non-native species. Plastic debris was detected in 1.1% of Salmo trutta stomachs, which evidences that anthropogenic pollution has reached freshwater feeding habitats. The first recorded instance of the invasive nematode Anguillicola crassus in the Lima River, where 84.8% of the eels sampled exhibited moderate-to-severe swim bladder damage, highlights the vulnerability of native species to biological invasions. Conclusions: Biometric analyses and condition factors suggest that the fish community is under cumulative anthropogenic stress, caused by factors including river fragmentation due to three dams and traditional fishing weirs. The near-equal representation of native and exotic species in catches indicates that the freshwater fish community is under significant invasion pressure, which has direct consequences for the conservation of the native ichthyofauna. These findings establish a crucial baseline for the evidence-based management of an Iberian river system that is ecologically important but data-poor. Full article

Emerging contaminants constitute a growing pressure on river ecosystems due to their persistence, chemical diversity, and ecotoxicological effects. The objective of this study was to analyze the presence of these compounds in muscle tissue across a range of aquatic species, including benthic fish (Gobio lozanoi, Cobitis sp.), nektonic species (Salmo trutta, Lepomis gibbosus), diadromous species (Anguilla anguilla, Petromyzon marinus, in the larval stage), generalist species (Pseudochondrostoma duriense), and crustaceans (Procambarus clarkii). Concentrations were determined using LC-MS/MS, grouping the compounds into different chemical families (e.g., pharmaceuticals, personal care products, industrial compounds, and other emerging contaminants). The results showed significant differences both among species and among compound families. At the interspecific level, Petromyzon marinus (larvae) exhibited the highest total concentrations, followed by Salmo trutta and benthic species such as Gobio lozanoi and Cobitis sp. Intermediate values were observed in Pseudochondrostoma duriense and Lepomis gibbosus, while Anguilla anguilla showed moderate levels. Procambarus clarkii displayed notable accumulation, especially of sediment-associated compounds. Analysis by compound families revealed distinct patterns: pharmaceutical and personal care compounds showed a relatively homogeneous distribution among species, whereas more hydrophobic and industrial compounds tended to accumulate in species with higher lipid content or greater benthic exposure. In particular, benthic species (lamprey larvae, gudgeon, spined loach, and crayfish) showed higher accumulation of sediment-associated compounds, confirming their role as contaminant reservoirs. Lamprey larvae, which exhibit filter-feeding behavior and remain buried in fine sediments for several years, showed high accumulation of multiple contaminant families, highlighting the importance of this life stage as an indicator of environmental contamination. The results demonstrate the coexistence of different accumulation mechanisms: (i) direct exposure to sediment, (ii) trophic biomagnification, and (iii) accumulation linked to the physicochemical properties of the compounds. This combined approach by species and contaminant families allows for a more comprehensive assessment of the ecological status of the system. Finally, the relevance of including multiple taxonomic groups and life cycle stages in monitoring programs is emphasized, especially in vulnerable species such as Petromyzon marinus. Full article

We conducted experiments to assess the importance of the effects of interactions between individuals of co-occurring species, the Common Gudgeon Gobio gobio, native to Europe, and the invasive Monkey Goby Neogobius fluviatilis. We examined the influence of the size of the competitor and the temperature of the water on competition for food between these two species. To investigate whether this food competition is dependent on the size of invasive competitors, we used three size classes of the invasive N. fluviatilis and a single size class of the native G. gobio in a tank-based experiment. To reflect the possible impact of temperature, we used two different water temperatures: 16 °C preferred by the G. gobio and 22 °C preferred by the N. fluviatilis. Based on the number of prey consumed, time to start feeding, and the total time spent hunting prey, we provided direct confirmation that the invasive N. fluviatilis in Europe is the superior competitor for food at both tested temperatures, eating twice as much prey, feeding 2–4 times faster, and spending up to three times more time on hunting. Food competition was size-dependent: the greater threat for native species is invasive fish, which are smaller or similar to them in size. Warmer temperatures (22 °C) gave more than twice as much advantage to the invaders under all tested feeding parameters. Therefore, we concluded that populations of invasive N. fluviatilis present a serious threat to native European benthic fish species (i.e., G. gobio). Increasing temperatures, better tolerated by invasive species, compound this problem. Full article

An economic assessment of an innovative solar thermal system called Application to Solar Thermal Energy to Processes (ASTEP) was conducted. It considered its three main subsystems: a novel rotary Fresnel SunDial, Thermal Energy Storage (TES) and Control System. Current Fresnel collectors are unable to provide thermal energy above 150 °C in high-latitude locations. Therefore, the key contribution of this study is the assessment of the economic performance of the ASTEP system used to provide high-temperature process heat up to 400 °C for industries located at low and high latitudes. The ASTEP system is installed at two end-users: Mandrekas (MAND), a dairy factory located in Greece at a latitude of 37.93 N and ArcelorMittal (AMTP), a manufacturer of steel tubes located in Romania at a latitude of 47.1 N. The life cycle costs (LCC), levelised cost of energy (LCOE), energy cost savings, EU carbon cost savings and benefit–cost ratio (BCR) of the ASTEP system were assessed. The results showed that AMTP’s ASTEP system had higher LCC and LCOE than MAND. This can be attributed to the use of two TES tanks and a double-axis solar tracking system for AMTP’s ASTEP system due to its high latitude location, compared to a single TES tank and single-axis solar tracking system used for MAND at low latitude. The total financial savings of the ASTEP system were EUR 249,248 for MAND and EUR 262,931 for AMTP over a period of 30 years. This study demonstrates that the ASTEP system offers financial benefits through its energy and EU carbon cost savings for industries at different latitudes while enhancing their environmental sustainability. Understanding historical processes underlying lineage distribution patterns is a primary goal of phylogeography. We selected Gobio rivuloides (Cypriniformes: Gobionidae) as a model to improve our knowledge about how intraspecific genetic divergence of freshwater fishes arises in coastal drainages of northern China via statistical analysis using cytochrome b gene. The time-calibrated phylogeny of G. rivuloides showed the divergence of two major lineages (I and II) at ~0.98 Ma (million years ago). Lineage I can be divided into two sub-lineages (I-A and I-B) with a divergence time of ~0.83 Ma. Sub-lineage I-A inhabits the Amur River, and sub-lineage I-B lives in the Luan River and Liao River. Lineage II is distributed in the Yellow River and Hai River, with close genetic relationships between the two drainages, and can be split into two sub-lineages (II-C and II-D) with a divergence time of ~0.60 Ma. Our findings indicate that the splitting of lineages and sub-lineages could be attributed to geographic isolation caused by the formation of the Bohai Sea, river capture, and the episodic hydrologic closing of a paleolake during the late Lower–Middle Pleistocene. It is also the first report we know of displaying a clear phylogeographic break for freshwater fishes across coastal drainages in northern China. Full article

The basal South American notothenioid Eleginops maclovinus (Patagonia blennie or róbalo) occupies a uniquely important phylogenetic position in Notothenioidei as the singular closest sister species to the Antarctic cryonotothenioid fishes. Its genome and the traits encoded therein would be the nearest representatives of the temperate ancestor from which the Antarctic clade arose, providing an ancestral reference for deducing polar derived changes. In this study, we generated a gene- and chromosome-complete assembly of the E. maclovinus genome using long read sequencing and HiC scaffolding. We compared its genome architecture with the more basally divergent Cottoperca gobio and the derived genomes of nine cryonotothenioids representing all five Antarctic families. We also reconstructed a notothenioid phylogeny using 2918 proteins of single-copy orthologous genes from these genomes that reaffirmed E. maclovinus’ phylogenetic position. We additionally curated E. maclovinus’ repertoire of circadian rhythm genes, ascertained their functionality by transcriptome sequencing, and compared its pattern of gene retention with C. gobio and the derived cryonotothenioids. Through reconstructing circadian gene trees, we also assessed the potential role of the retained genes in cryonotothenioids by referencing to the functions of the human orthologs. Our results found E. maclovinus to share greater conservation with the Antarctic clade, solidifying its evolutionary status as the direct sister and best suited ancestral proxy of cryonotothenioids. The high-quality genome of E. maclovinus will facilitate inquiries into cold derived traits in temperate to polar evolution, and conversely on the paths of readaptation to non-freezing habitats in various secondarily temperate cryonotothenioids through comparative genomic analyses. Biodiversity is facing an unprecedented crisis and substantial efforts are needed to conserve natural populations, especially in river ecosystems. The use of molecular tools to guide conservation practices in rivers has grown in popularity over the last decades, but the amount of precision and/or biological information that would be gained by switching from the traditional short tandem repeats (STRs) to the increasingly used single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) is still debated. Here, we compared the usefulness of STRs and SNPs to study spatial patterns of genetic variability in two freshwater fish species (Phoxinus dragarum and Gobio occitaniae) in southern France. SNPs were obtained from a pool-seq procedure and mapped to new genome assemblies. They provided much more precise estimates of genetic diversity and genetic differentiation than STRs, but both markers allowed the detection of very similar genetic structures in each species, which could be useful for delineating conservation units. While both markers provided similar outcomes, there were two discrepancies in genetic structures that could, nonetheless, be explained by unrecorded stocking events. Overall, we demonstrated that SNPs are not unconditionally superior to STRs in the context of large-scale riverscape genetic conservation, and that the choice of marker should primarily be based on research questions and resources available. Climate change is affecting freshwater ecosystems globally, particularly those in semi-arid and arid regions. The Central Anatolian Ecoregion (CAE) in Türkiye has a semi-arid climate and is home to numerous endemic fish species. We used species distribution modelling to elucidate the distribution of sixteen endemic fish species in CAE and predicted their potential distributions for 2041–2060 and 2081–2100 based on the CMIP6 climate model. Half of the species are predicted to experience a significant loss of climatically suitable areas. Anatolichthys fontinalis, Gobio gymnostethus, Gobio hettitorum, and Pseudophoxinus burduricus will face a complete loss of suitable areas by 2081–2100 under a high emissions climate scenario, whereas Cobitis bilseli, Egirdira nigra, Gobio intermedius, and Squalius anatolicus will experience a significant loss. The other eight species can potentially benefit from climate warming if all other stressors remain equal. Anthropogenic stressors, such as water abstraction for irrigation, pollution, invasive species introductions, and dam construction, are already putting endemic fish populations in CAE under extreme pressure. Climate change is expected to exacerbate these threats. Regular monitoring of freshwater ecosystems and fish fauna in the CAE and protecting the region from key anthropogenic stressors are recommended to successfully conserve these endemic freshwater fishes under climate change. We newly sequenced complete mitochondrial genomes (mitogenome) of two gudgeon species Saurogobio dabryi and S. punctatus, and we downloaded 49 gudgeon mitogenomes from GenBank to investigate the phylogeny of the Pseudogobionini group and analyze selection pressure of the genes. With genera Gobio, Acanthogobio, and Romanogobio as outgroups, the phylogeny of the Pseudogobionini group was revealed as ((Xenophysogobio + Gobiobotia) + (Saurogobio + (Abbottina + (Pseudogobio + Biwia complex)))) based on the concatenated nucleotide sequences of 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs). Based on the molecular phylogeny and morphological or osteological characters, we proposed a classification system of the Pseudogobionini group. Moreover, five pairs of sister taxa were selected for gene selection pressure analyses to explore the link of mitochondrial gene evolution to group differentiation and adaptations. We detected significantly different dN/dS values in 11 out of 13 (excluding ND3 and ND4L) PCGs in five pairs of clades, significantly different mean dN/dS, dN, and/or dS values in 8 out of 13 PCGs (excluding ND2, ATP8, ND3, ND4L, and ND6) in three pairs of sub-clades and seven positively selected sites in another three pairs of sub-clades. These results indicated that mitochondrial gene evolution might have contributed to group differentiation and adaptations especially for river or lake environments. Full article

Fish chromosomes are considered homogeneous in their AT/GC nucleotide composition, and banding patterns enabling identification of homologs are largely missing. While cytogenomic approaches try to compensate for this issue by virtual karyotyping, they rely on the quality of genome assemblies available. Recently, soft-masked genome assemblies combining costly and arduous long- and short-read sequencing and new generation assemblers became available for two teleost fish species, climbing perch (Anabas testudineus) and channel bull blenny (Cottoperca gobio). Soft-masking turns repetitive sequences in a genome assembly into lower case letters, leaving unique sequences in upper case. This enables investigators to assess the proportion of guanine and cytosine nucleotides (GC%) of transposable elements as an indicator of AT/GC homogenisation in fish. We have developed a new version of our Python tool Evan, which utilises chromosome-level genome assemblies and combines the profiles of GC% and the proportion of repeats (rep%) along chromosomes. Our profiles of both of those fishes showed clear and abrupt but small-scale fluctuations in GC% along otherwise compositionally homogenised sequences. Our study also highlights the key role of the sliding window size in determining the resolution of GC% profiling. While the quality of the genome assemblies appeared to be sufficient for GC%/rep% profiling, more effective repeat masking is necessary to better distinguish to what extent repeats compositionally homogenize fish genomes. The IgM and IgT classes were previously identified and characterized in the Antarctic teleost Trematomus bernacchii, a species belonging to the Perciform suborder Notothenoidei. Herein, we characterized the gene encoding the polymeric immunoglobulin receptor (pIgR) in the same species and compared it to the pIgR of multiple teleost species belonging to five perciform suborders, including 11 Antarctic and 1 non-Antarctic (Cottoperca gobio) notothenioid species, the latter living in the less-cold peri-Antarctic sea. Antarctic pIgR genes displayed particularly long introns marked by sites of transposable elements and transcription factors. Furthermore, analysis of T. bernacchii pIgR cDNA unveiled multiple amino acid substitutions unique to the Antarctic species, all introducing adaptive features, including N-glycosylation sequons. Interestingly, C. gobio shared most features with the other perciforms rather than with the cold-adapted relatives. T. bernacchii pIgR transcripts were predominantly expressed in mucosal tissues, as indicated by q-PCR and in situ hybridization analysis. These results suggest that in cold-adapted species, pIgR preserved its fundamental role in mucosal immune defense, although remarkable gene structure modifications occurred. Full article
