Ecological resettlement (ER), or conservation-led displacement, is widely implemented to safeguard biodiversity but often produces complex socio-ecological outcomes. This study assessed the environmental justice (both social and ecological) impacts of ER in Nepal’s Terai Arc Landscape (TAL) using an enhanced (including social, ecological, and environmental aspects) environmental justice (EJ) framework. Data were collected from 240 households across all resettled villages within the Chitwan and Parsa National Parks (NPs) of Nepal through household interviews, key informant interviews, focus groups, and field observations, supplemented by policy reviews, reports, and unpublished documents. Household demographics indicated an average family size of 5.5, gender parity (664 females, 658 males), and diverse caste/ethnic composition (ethnic: 146 households; higher caste: 64; lower caste: 6). Wealth distribution and literacy were uneven, with disparities in land ownership, assets, and social positions. Social and ecological justice outcomes were analysed using chi-square and McNemar tests. We observed a significant difference (p < 0.05) in substantive justice (food, shelter, clothing, and security) attributes before and after the resettlements. Similarly, significant improvements post-resettlement were observed in procedural and recognition justice: participation in decision-making increased from 43% to 62% (χ2 = 12.34, p < 0.05). However, recognition of Indigenous knowledge and FPIC rights remained low, with 93% of households reporting inadequate acknowledgment (χ2 = 198.5, p < 0.05). Distributive justice indicators, including access to compensation and forest resources, showed mixed outcomes, with 52% reporting fair compensation and 48% citing inequities (p < 0.05). Ecological outcomes also shifted significantly: forest cover decreased in 65% of surveyed areas post-resettlement, while grassland extent increased in 28% (χ2 = 27.4, p < 0.05). Water source accessibility declined for 48% of households (χ2 = 21.6, p < 0.05), and bushfire incidence decreased by 15% (χ2 = 9.8, p < 0.05). Composite scoring revealed strong linkages between social justice deficits and ecological downturn in the resettled areas, suggesting that inadequate participation, recognition, inequitable compensation, and ecological degradation shift the issues from parks to the outside and exacerbate environmental vulnerability. These findings demonstrate that ER can achieve partial ecological objectives inside the parks but often perpetuates social inequities and ecological downturn in the resettled areas, undermining the long-term sustainability of the socio-ecological landscape. The study highlights the critical need to integrate social justice, participatory governance, and ecological monitoring into resettlement planning. Future policies should be grounded in the understanding that conservation effectiveness and social equity are mutually reinforcing, and that ignoring justice dimensions risks undermining both biodiversity outcomes and human wellbeing. The Indonesian palm oil industry faces enduring social, environmental, and sustainability challenges stemming from rapid expansion over the past decade. Although technologies exist to enhance productivity and balance economic and ecological goals, adoption among smallholders remains limited. This study explores how rural communities respond to the climate crisis and how social and environmental justice is distributed within palm oil-producing regions in Indonesia. Using an exploratory qualitative design grounded in a collective social change perspective, data were collected through observations and document studies to examine institutional dynamics influencing smallholder behavior. The analysis applies institutional logic to understand smallholder attitudes toward sustainability and innovation, and institutional context to assess constraints such as limited access to land, credit, and technical resources. Findings reveal that structural barriers—including corruption, weak legal certainty, and social exclusion—impede innovation and reinforce inequality. This study contributes theoretically by integrating eco-colonialism, intersectionality, and political ecology frameworks to advance understanding of socio-ecological justice in palm oil governance. It highlights how gender, ethnicity, and class shape access to resources, vulnerability, and resilience, emphasizing that environmental issues are embedded in broader power structures rooted in colonial legacies and neoliberal policies. Practically, the research calls for community-centered, participatory policies that recognize customary land rights, institutionalize transparent licensing and FPIC processes, and strengthen smallholder capacity through ISPO-aligned training. These measures can foster inclusive governance, mitigate conflict, and enhance sustainability, contributing to more equitable and resilient palm oil supply chains. Full article

This study examines Panama’s 2023 mining restrictions to illuminate persistent legitimacy crises in extractive governance. Employing a qualitative case study, it draws on 25 semi-structured interviews with government officials, industry representatives, Indigenous leaders, local communities, mining critics and other civil society actors, alongside policy and document analysis. Findings suggest that legitimacy reconstruction relies on four interdependent conditions: procedural justice, institutional trust, epistemic legitimacy, and relational governance. Stakeholders consistently emphasized transparency, capacity building, and inclusive engagement as essential for future mining activity, underscoring that technical standards alone are insufficient without credible institutions. Building on—but extending beyond—frameworks such as Social License to Operate (SLO) and Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC), this paper offers Social Legitimacy for Mining (SLM) as a provisional, co-produced framework. Developed through literature synthesis and refined by diverse stakeholder perspectives, SLM is applied in Panama as an illustrative proof of concept that may inform further research and practice, while recognizing the need for additional adaptation across jurisdictions. Fine-grained plant image classification (FPIC) aims to distinguish plant species with subtle visual differences, but existing datasets often suffer from limited category diversity, homogeneous backgrounds, and insufficient environmental variation, limiting their effectiveness in complex real-world scenarios. To address these challenges, a novel dataset, FewMedical-XJAU, is presented, focusing on rare medicinal plants native to Xinjiang, China. This dataset offers higher intra-class variability, more complex and diverse natural backgrounds, varied shooting angles and lighting conditions, and more rigorous expert annotations, providing a realistic testbed for FPIC tasks. Building on this, an improved method called BDCC (Bilinear Deep Cross-modal Composition) is proposed, which incorporates textual priors into a deep metric learning framework to enhance semantic discrimination. A Class-Aware Structured Text Prompt Construction strategy is introduced to improve the model’s semantic understanding, along with a dynamic fusion mechanism to address high inter-class similarity and intra-class variability. In few-shot classification experiments, the method demonstrates superior accuracy and robustness under complex environmental conditions, offering strong support for practical applications of fine-grained classification. This article identifies the nature of Traditional Owners’ interests in Sea Country and addresses issues associated with all offshore energy projects—gas and wind. Exploring the impacts of offshore development on First Nations’ cultural heritage, the article proposes integration of free, prior and informed consent (FPIC) and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), into the regulatory and legislative offshore environment. In the Australian context, this particularly regards administrative and regulatory reforms to overcome uncertainty arising from recent decisions in the Federal Court. The international focus on new energy has fast-tracked many processes that sideline First Nations’ rights, hitherto understood within the onshore minerals extraction regimes. The reforms proposed in this article recognise an international commitment to enact the principles contained in the UNDRIP and other relevant international law. Full article

Community Forest Management (CFM) and REDD+ projects have emerged as key strategies for promoting environmental conservation and livelihood improvement. This review explores the effectiveness of incorporating free, prior, and informed consent (FPIC), safeguard principles, grievance redress mechanisms, and benefit-sharing mechanisms into CFM and REDD+ in Cambodia, with a focus on enhancing communities’ livelihoods and climate change adaptation. This paper synthesizes findings from recent literature on CFM and REDD+ in Cambodia and internationally, analyzing key case studies, policy frameworks, and community engagement strategies. Findings suggest that while REDD+ projects offer potential economic and ecological benefits, challenges related to land tenure, equity in benefit-sharing, and community participation remain. This review highlights the need for stronger community engagement, a robust conflict management structure, clear land tenure policies, equitable benefit-sharing mechanisms, and more climate change adaptation activities to ensure the success of CFM and REDD+ projects in Cambodia and the Global South. This study addresses chaos control in a Buck–Boost converter using ZAD technique and FPIC. The system analysis identified 1-periodic orbits and observed the occurrence of flip bifurcations, indicating chaotic behavior characterized by sensitivity to initial conditions. To mitigate these instabilities, FPIC was successfully applied, stabilizing periodic orbits and significantly reducing chaos in the system. Numerical simulations verified the presence of chaos, confirmed by positive Lyapunov exponents, and demonstrated the effectiveness of the applied control methods. Steady-state and transient responses of the open-loop model and experimental system were evaluated, showing a strong correlation between them. Under varying load conditions, the numerical model accurately predicted the converter’s real dynamics, validating the proposed approach. Additionally, closed-loop control with ZAD exhibited robust performance, maintaining stable inductor current even during abrupt load changes, thus achieving effective control in non-minimum phase systems. This work contributes to the design of robust control strategies for power converters, optimizing their stability and dynamic response in applications that require precise management of power under variable conditions. Finally, a comparison was made between the performance of the Buck–Boost converter controlled with ZAD and the one controlled by PID. It was observed that both controllers effectively regulate the current, with a steady-state error of less than 1%. However, the system controlled with ZAD maintains a fixed switching frequency, whereas the PID-controlled system lacks a fixed switching frequency and operates with a very high PWM frequency. This high frequency in the PID-controlled system presents a disadvantage, as it leads to issues such as chattering, duty cycle saturation, and consequently, overheating of the MOSFET. Full article

Human activities have led to an increased influx of carbon into lakes due to changes in land use that result in higher erosion rates, eutrophication, and the introduction of organic matter. This, in turn, causes greater carbon exports and carbon accumulation in sediments. In our study, we estimated the fluxes of total particulate carbon (FTPC), particulate organic carbon (FPOC), and particulate inorganic carbon (FPIC) in three lakes with different trophic statuses. Two lakes, one eutrophic (Bosque Azul) and one mesotrophic (San José), are in the anthropically impacted zone of the plateau. In contrast, an oligotrophic lake (Tziscao) is in the mountainous, pristine area of “Lagunas de Montebello” National Park, a tropical karst lake district in Chiapas, Mexico. Our findings revealed that the highest FPOC values were observed in the eutrophic lake (0.47 ± 0.2 g m−2 d−1), while the highest FPIC were observed in the mesotrophic lake (1.11 ± 0.8 g m−2 d−1). In contrast, the oligotrophic lake exhibited the lowest fluxes. Eutrophication increased the levels of FPOC, while deforestation and erosion contributed to the rise in FPIC. Eutrophication and erosion in the lakes of LMNP led to five-, two-, and sixteen-fold increases in the FTPC, FPOC, and FPIC, respectively. Full article

This article is based on a review of the governance of land tenure in 18 countries—16 in Africa and 2 in Asia—carried out from 2021 to 2023. It uses international guidelines on land policy and tenure governance as benchmarks to assess progress in each country through reviewing policy documents and literature, and obtaining inputs from key informants. This paper shows that, during the last decade, there has been significant progress in land tenure policies that have improved the recognition of customary and other communal land rights and improved women’s land rights. The formal registration of individual rights to customary and community land has now been achieved cost-effectively, with more rights going to women in a number of settings, and without leading to widespread commoditisation or land dispossession. There is a mixed picture, with countries trying different ways to grapple with common challenges such as securing customary tenure rights, unlocking development potential, improving women’s land rights, and managing the contesting interests in land. There are important examples of best practices in some countries that can be learnt from, such as the legislation of Free Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) requirements and processes of large-scale land rights registration. Despite progress achieved in several countries, too many people are not enjoying the benefits of improved land tenure security; some countries still need to adopt new legislation, while others need to improve their implementation of existing legislation. More needs to be learnt from the range of different approaches to dealing with land tenure as national governments attempt to find solutions that accommodate contesting interests. The lessons and trends identified will be of value to country-level and international work on improving land tenure governance. Full article

Free, prior, and informed consent, or FPIC, is a crucial component of reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries (REDD+) projects. This study addresses a significant research gap regarding FPIC in the context of REDD+ projects, with a focus on the Implementation of Governance, Forest Landscapes, and Livelihoods (I-GFLL) project in the Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Lao PDR). This research aimed to evaluate the FPIC’s components and implementation. We employed a literature review of the FPIC implementation reports from 242 targeted villages involved in the I-GFLL project and face-to-face interviews with 12 key informants. The research found positive aspects, such as female team membership, boosting ethnic women’s participation; the exclusion of forestry officials to foster an open dialogue; and respect for project rejections, displaying adherence to the FPIC principles. However, some challenging aspects were also highlighted, such as the exclusion of civil society organizations (CSOs) and non-government organizations (NGOs) and the loss of their expertise; limited team knowledge of forestry/climate change, hindering communication; short consultation durations; and an incomplete understanding of technical terms due to the project’s novelty, raising concerns. The study emphasizes the importance of crafting FPIC teams that promote communication, respect community rights, and, ultimately, ensure successful project implementation. Full article

This paper presents an analysis and control of chaos in the boost converter controlled with zero average dynamics, fixed-point induced control, and time-delayed autosynchronization techniques. First, the existence of chaos is demonstrated numerically when positive Lyapunov exponents are found in the controlled system, for a range from k1=0.26 to k1=0.4387, when k2=0.5. Additionally, chaos is also found for a range from k1=0.435 to k1=0.26, when k2=0.5. Subsequently, fixed-point-induced control and time-delayed autosynchronization techniques are used to control the chaos. The results show that both techniques are useful to control the chaos in the boost converter. Furthermore, the fixed-point-induced control technique allows better regulation than the time-delayed autosynchronization technique. Moreover, when only the fixed-point induced control technique is used on the boost converter with a time delay, the results were not good enough to stabilize orbits. The stability is validated by calculating the Lyapunov exponents. Full article

The Shashamane rural district was selected as a target area and corridor of large-scale agriculture investment (LSAI) to produce surplus agricultural products and ensure local development by the state and private (domestic and foreign) investors. Shalo–Melega private LSAI projects started operation in 2008 in the Shashamane rural district. This farm project comprises a crop production site, construction of a road, a crop storage facility, and developing irrigation in a total of about 24,710.51 acres of land along the central Rift Valley basin, for long-term leases. Little attention has been paid to how land ownership has changed and transaction transparency; how the community has been consulted; whether free, prior, and informed consent (FPIC) has been provided; and how local people have been displaced. This study sought to investigate the consultation process, land transaction transparency, the use of FPIC, and local community dis-placement as a result of LSAI in the Shashamane rural district. The study adopted multi-method qualitative and quantitative data collection tools including primary data, collected from a directly impacted population of 134 households, using systematic random sampling techniques; key and in-depth informant interviews; focus group discussions (FGD); and field visits. Through the use of qualitative and qualitative research paradigms, a systematic analysis was conducted. The result of the study shows that 86.6% of respondents (both interested and affected) expressed that both government and the proponents were not taking in account their concerns during the consultation processes. Lack of free, prior, and informed consent (FPIC) reduces local people’s sense of recognition and status. Moreover, LSAI displaced the rural people from their area of settlement and farmland, triggered a shortage of communal grazing and forest resources. Additionally, nonequivalent and unsatisfactory mitigation and compensation methods highly triggers the negative impacts. As a result of manipulation and therapy used during the consultation process, we assert that the local community had less decision-making authority and that the risk to the farm was thereby increased. The government, investors, and local communities are three actors whose respective roles need to be strengthened and transparent. It is crucial to strengthen the implementation of customary land tenure rights to benefit local and indigenous people and civil society organizations (CSOs). Full article

In 2012 and 2019, respectively, the Sarayaku Kichwa and the Huaorani and Cofán peoples of the Ecuadorian Amazon won cases against the Ecuadorian government for its lack of consultation on planned oil exploration. Such cases upholding the correct application of the right to Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC) under international treaties are rare; more often, Western judicial systems and environmental impact assessments have been used to serve corporate interests, as exemplified by the Aguinda v. Texaco case initiated in 1993 and the planned operations of Andes Petroleum in Orellana province 2019–2020, respectively. Indigenous and non-Western epistemologies tend to be incompatible with state-driven liberal secular capitalism—hence Indigenous efforts to prevent land seizures and the expansion of the extractive frontier into Indigenous territories in the Amazon rainforest have been undermined by the imperatives of modernization/developmentalism. These same forces have stimulated demand for gold, the legal and illegal mining of which, along the Napo river, have caused the contamination of the waters of the Amazon, threatening the health of Indigenous and non-indigenous riverine communities. Faba bean is a potential ingredient due to its high protein yield and its possible cultivation in colder climate regions. In this study, meat analogues made from faba bean protein isolate (FPI) and concentrate (FPC) blends were produced using high moisture extrusion. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of the FPI content (FPIc), feed water content (FWC), and temperature of the long cooling die (LT) during extrusion on the mechanical and physicochemical properties as well as on the structure of the meat analogues. Increased FPIc resulted in higher values in hardness, gumminess, chewiness, and cutting strengths as well as in darker colour and decreased water absorption capacity. The effect of increased FWC on these properties was weaker and the opposite. Images from microtomography revealed that higher FPIc led to a less organised fibrous structure. In conclusion, fibrous structures can be achieved by utilising a mixture of faba bean protein ingredients, and a higher FPC content seemed to promote fibre formation in the meat analogue. Indigenous peoples’ environments can be easily disrupted by foreign investments, and disputes have occasionally occurred over the past few years. The objective of this research article is to examine if current international investment law, especially its investor-state dispute settlement (ISDS) mechanism, could provide necessary protection to Indigenous rights. We searched all publicly available ISDS cases from 2000 to 2020, and selected 10 typical ones for comprehensive case study by using various research methods such as doctrinal legal research and comparative analysis. Our research revealed that Indigenous peoples’ participation in the ISDS proceedings is legally restrained, time-consuming, and rarely favorably decided by the arbitral tribunals. Responsibility for such undesirable outcomes rests with all stakeholders involved in the process, while the consequences of post-arbitration tend to be “triple losing”. These findings highlight the quest for a more sustainable international investment regime that promotes Indigenous peoples’ wellbeing and environment protection. We argue that future reform could be promoted not only over ISDS procedural matters, but also by upgrading substantive rules in international investment agreements (IIAs), emphasizing free, prior, and informed consent (FPIC), and strengthening foreign investors’ corporate social responsibilities (CSR).
