Flexibility is advocated as an effective solution to address the growing need to alleviate grid congestion, necessitating efficient energy management strategies for industrial operations. This paper presents a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP)-based optimization framework for a flexible asset in an industrial setting, aiming to minimize operational costs and enhance energy efficiency. The method integrates dynamic pricing and real-time grid analysis, alongside a state estimation model using Extended Kalman Filtering (EKF) that improves the accuracy of system state predictions. Model Predictive Control (MPC) is employed for real-time adjustments. A real-world case studies from aquaculture industries and industrial power grids in Denmark demonstrates the approach. By leveraging dynamic pricing and grid signals, the system enables adaptive pump scheduling, achieving a 27% reduction in energy costs while maintaining voltage stability within 0.95–1.05 p.u. and ensuring operational safety. These results confirm the effectiveness of grid-aware, flexible control in reducing costs and enhancing stability, supporting the transition toward smarter, sustainable industrial energy systems. With the increasing uncertainty introduced by the large-scale integration of renewable energy sources, traditional power dispatching methods face significant challenges, including severe frequency fluctuations, substantial forecasting deviations, and the difficulty of balancing economic efficiency with system stability. To address these issues, a deep learning-based dispatching framework is proposed, which integrates spatiotemporal feature extraction with a stability-aware mechanism. A joint forecasting model is constructed using Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) to handle multi-source inputs, while a reinforcement learning-based stability-aware scheduler is developed to manage dynamic system responses. In addition, an uncertainty modeling mechanism combining Dropout and Bayesian networks is incorporated to enhance dispatch robustness. Experiments conducted on real-world power grid and renewable generation datasets demonstrate that the proposed forecasting module achieves approximately a 2.1% improvement in accuracy compared with Autoformer and reduces Mean Absolute Error (MAE) and Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) by 18.1% and 14.1%, respectively, compared with traditional LSTM models. The achieved Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE) of 5.82% outperforms all baseline models. In terms of scheduling performance, the proposed method reduces the total operating cost by 5.8% relative to Autoformer, decreases the frequency deviation from 0.158 Hz to 0.129 Hz, and increases the Critical Clearing Time (CCT) to 2.74 s, significantly enhancing dynamic system stability. Ablation studies reveal that removing the uncertainty modeling module increases the frequency deviation to 0.153 Hz and raises operational costs by approximately 6.9%, confirming the critical role of this module in maintaining robustness. Furthermore, under diverse load profiles and meteorological disturbances, the proposed method maintains stable forecasting accuracy and scheduling policy outputs, demonstrating strong generalization capabilities. Overall, the proposed approach achieves a well-balanced performance in terms of forecasting precision, system stability, and economic efficiency in power grids with high renewable energy penetration, indicating substantial potential for practical deployment and further research. Environmental protection has become one of the key challenges of our time. This has led to an increase in pro-environmental activities in the field of cosmetics and household chemicals, where manufacturers are increasingly trying to meet the expectations of consumers who are aware of the potential risks associated with the production of cosmetics and household chemistry products. This is one of the most important challenges of today’s industry, given that some of the raw materials still commonly used, such as surfactants, may be toxic to aquatic organisms. Many companies are choosing to use natural raw materials that have satisfactory performance properties but are also environmentally friendly. In addition, modern products are also characterized by reduced consumption of water, resources, and energy in production processes. These measures reduce the carbon footprint and reduce the amount of plastic packaging required. In the present study, seven formulations of environmentally friendly car shampoo concentrates were developed, based entirely on mixtures of bio-based surfactants. The developed formulations were tested for application on the car body surface, allowing the selection of the two best products. For these selected formulations, an in-depth physicochemical analysis was carried out, including pH, density, and viscosity measurements. Comparison of the results with commercial products available on the market was also performed. Additionally, using the multiple light scattering method, the foamability and foam stability were determined for the car shampoos developed. The results obtained indicate the very high application potential of the products under study, which combine high performance and environmental concerns. Full article

Understanding vehicle emissions is essential for developing effective carbon reduction strategies in the transport sector. Conventional emission models often assume homogeneity and linearity, overlooking real-world asymmetries that arise from variations in vehicle design and powertrain configurations. This study explores how machine learning and explainable AI techniques can effectively capture both symmetric and asymmetric emission patterns across different vehicle types, thereby contributing to more sustainable transport planning. Addressing a key gap in the existing literature, the study poses the following question: how do structural and behavioral factors contribute to asymmetric emission responses in internal combustion engine vehicles compared to new energy vehicles? Utilizing a large-scale Spanish vehicle registration dataset, the analysis classifies vehicles by powertrain type and applies five supervised learning algorithms to predict CO2 emissions. SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAPs) are employed to identify nonlinear and threshold-based relationships between emissions and vehicle characteristics such as fuel consumption, weight, and height. Among the models tested, the Random Forest algorithm achieves the highest predictive accuracy. The findings reveal critical asymmetries in emission behavior, particularly among hybrid vehicles, which challenge the assumption of uniform policy applicability. This study provides both methodological innovation and practical insights for symmetry-aware emission modeling, offering support for more targeted eco-design and policy decisions that align with long-term sustainability goals. The exponential proliferation of the Internet of Things (IoT) and optical IoT (O-IoT) has introduced substantial challenges concerning computational capacity and energy efficiency. IoT devices generate vast volumes of aggregated data and require intensive processing, often resulting in elevated latency and excessive energy consumption. Task offloading has emerged as a viable solution; however, many existing strategies fail to adequately optimize both latency and energy usage. This paper proposes a novel task-offloading approach based on deep Q-network (DQN) learning, designed to intelligently and dynamically balance these critical metrics. The proposed framework continuously refines real-time task offloading decisions by leveraging the adaptive learning capabilities of DQN, thereby substantially reducing latency and energy consumption. To further enhance system performance, the framework incorporates optical networks into the IoT–fog–cloud architecture, capitalizing on their high-bandwidth and low-latency characteristics. This integration facilitates more efficient distribution and processing of tasks, particularly in data-intensive IoT applications. Additionally, we present a comparative analysis between the proposed DQN algorithm and the optimal strategy. Through extensive simulations, we demonstrate the superior effectiveness of the proposed DQN framework across various IoT and O-IoT scenarios compared to the BAT and DJA approaches, achieving improvements in energy consumption and latency of 35%, 50%, 30%, and 40%, respectively. These findings underscore the significance of selecting an appropriate offloading strategy tailored to the specific requirements of IoT and O-IoT applications, particularly with regard to environmental stability and performance demands. In the context of growing global climate change awareness and intensifying environmental degradation, technological innovation in renewable energy has become a key realization method for sustainable development. This paper uses data samples from 30 provinces, municipalities, and autonomous regions in China (excluding Tibet, Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan due to data availability) from 2007–2022, constructs an SFA model to measure carbon emission efficiency, and innovatively investigates the U-shaped impact of technological innovation in renewable energy on carbon emission efficiency along with the moderating effects of informatization level and fiscal decentralization. The empirical findings reveal the following: (1) Technological innovation in renewable energy demonstrates a U-shaped impact on carbon emission efficiency, with a negative impact before inflection point 2.596605 and a positive impact after the inflection point. (2) The informatization level plays a positive regulating role in the impact of technological innovation in renewable energy toward carbon emission efficiency, while fiscal decentralization exerts a negative regulating effect. (3) The impact of technological innovation in renewable energy concerning carbon emission efficiency varies depending on regional differences, industrial structure levels, and technological innovation levels in renewable energy. The conclusions of this paper are helpful for promoting the development of technological innovation in renewable energy, improving carbon emission efficiency, and advancing sustainable socio-economic development. A Pilot Study on Thermal Comfort in Young Adults: Context-Aware Classification Using Machine Learning and Multimodal Sensors

While personal thermal comfort is critical for well-being and productivity, it is often overlooked by traditional building management systems that rely on uniform settings. Modern data-driven approaches often fail to capture the complex interactions between various data streams. This pilot study introduces a high-accuracy, interpretable framework for thermal comfort classification, designed to identify the most significant predictors from a comprehensive suite of environmental, physiological, and anthropometric data in a controlled group of young adults. Initially, an XGBoost model using the full 24-feature dataset achieved the best performance at 91% accuracy. However, after using SHAP analysis to identify and select the most influential features, the performance of our ensemble models improved significantly; notably, a Random Forest model’s accuracy rose from 90% to 94%. Our analysis confirmed that for this homogeneous cohort, environmental parameters—specifically temperature, humidity, and CO2—were the dominant predictors of thermal comfort. The primary strength of this methodology lies in its ability to create a transparent pipeline that objectively identifies the most critical comfort drivers for a given population, forming a crucial evidence base for model design. The analysis also revealed that the predictive value of heart rate variability (HRV) diminished when richer physiological data, such as diastolic blood pressure, were included. For final validation, the optimized Random Forest model, using only the top 10 features, was tested on a hold-out set of 100 samples, achieving a final accuracy of 95% and an F1-score of 0.939, with all misclassifications occurring only between adjacent comfort levels. These findings establish a validated methodology for creating effective, context-aware comfort models that can be embedded into intelligent building management systems. Such adaptive systems enable a shift from static climate control to dynamic, user-centric environments, laying the critical groundwork for future personalized systems while enhancing occupant well-being and offering significant energy savings. Underwater sensor networks (UWSNs) play a crucial role in subsea operations like marine exploration and environmental monitoring. A major challenge for UWSNs is achieving effective and energy-efficient data collection, particularly in deep-sea mining, where energy limitations and long-term deployment are key concerns. This study introduces a Channel-Aware AUV-Aided Data Collection Scheme (CADC) that utilizes deep reinforcement learning (DRL) to improve data collection efficiency. It features an innovative underwater node traversal algorithm that accounts for unique underwater signal propagation characteristics, along with a DRL-based path planning approach to mitigate propagation losses and enhance data energy efficiency. CADC achieves a 71.2% increase in energy efficiency compared to existing clustering methods and shows a 0.08% improvement over the Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (DDPG), with a 2.3% faster convergence than the Twin Delayed DDPG (TD3), and reduces energy cost to only 22.2% of that required by the TSP-based baseline. By combining a channel-aware traversal with adaptive DRL navigation, CADC effectively optimizes data collection and energy consumption in underwater environments. Full article

Autonomous Unmanned Surface Vehicle (USV) operations in complex ocean engineering scenarios necessitate robust navigation, guidance, and control technologies. These systems require reliable sensor-based object detection and efficient, safe, and energy-aware path planning. To address these multifaceted challenges, this paper proposes a novel synergistic AI framework. The framework integrates (1) a novel adaptation of the Swin-Transformer to generate a dense, semantic risk map from raw visual data, enabling the system to interpret ambiguous marine conditions like sun glare and choppy water, enabling real-time environmental understanding crucial for guidance; (2) a Transformer-enhanced A-star (T-ASTAR) algorithm with spatio-temporal attentional guidance to generate globally near-optimal and energy-aware static paths; (3) a domain-adapted TD3 agent featuring a novel energy-aware reward function that optimizes for USV hydrodynamic constraints, making it suitable for long-endurance missions tailored for USVs to perform dynamic local path optimization and real-time obstacle avoidance, forming a key control element; and (4) CUDA acceleration to meet the computational demands of real-time ocean engineering applications. Simulations and real-world data verify the framework’s superiority over benchmarks like A* and RRT, achieving 30% shorter routes, 70% fewer turns, 64.7% fewer dynamic collisions, and a 215-fold speed improvement in map generation via CUDA acceleration. This research underscores the importance of integrating powerful AI components within a hierarchical synergy, encompassing AI-based perception, hierarchical decision planning for guidance, and multi-stage optimal search algorithms for control. The proposed solution significantly advances USV autonomy, addressing critical ocean engineering challenges such as navigation in dynamic environments, object avoidance, and energy-constrained operations for unmanned maritime systems. High-voltage diodes, as key devices in power electronic systems, have important significance for system reliability and preventive maintenance in terms of storage life prediction. In this paper, we propose a hybrid modeling framework that integrates the Long Short-Term Memory Network (LSTM) and Transformer structure, and is hyper-parameter optimized by the Improved Artificial Bee Colony Algorithm (IABC), aiming to realize the high-precision modeling and prediction of high-voltage diode storage life. The framework combines the advantages of LSTM in time-dependent modeling with the global feature extraction capability of Transformer’s self-attention mechanism, and improves the feature learning effect under small-sample conditions through a deep fusion strategy. Meanwhile, the parameter type-aware IABC search mechanism is introduced to efficiently optimize the model hyperparameters. The experimental results show that, compared with the unoptimized model, the average mean square error (MSE) of the proposed model is reduced by 33.7% (from 0.00574 to 0.00402) and the coefficient of determination (R2) is improved by 3.6% (from 0.892 to 0.924) in 10-fold cross-validation. The average predicted lifetime of the sample was 39,403.3 h, and the mean relative uncertainty of prediction was 12.57%. This study provides an efficient tool for power electronics reliability engineering and has important applications for smart grid and new energy system health management. Full article

Problem: Existing Human–Robot Collaboration (HRC) allocators cannot react at a sub-second scale while accounting for worker fatigue. Objective: We designed a fatigue-aware combinatorial auction executed every 100 ms. Method: A human and a FANUC robot submit bids combining execution time, predicted energy, and real-time fatigue; a greedy algorithm (≤1 ms) with a 11/e approximation guarantee and O (|Bids| log |Bids|) complexity maximizes utility. Results: In 1000 RoboDK episodes, the framework increases active cycles·min−1 by 20%, improves robot utilization by +10.2 percentage points, reduces per cycle fatigue by 4%, and raises the collision-free rate to 99.85% versus a static baseline (p < 0.001). Contribution: We provide the first transparent, sub-second, fatigue-aware allocation mechanism for Industry 5.0, with quantified privacy safeguards and a roadmap for physical deployment. Unlike prior auction-based or reinforcement learning approaches, our model uniquely integrates a sub-second ergonomic adaptation with a mathematically interpretable utility structure, ensuring both human-centered responsiveness and system-level transparency. This study evaluates the feasibility and visibility of electric vehicles (EVs) in Egypt, addressing critical research gaps and proposing actionable strategies to drive adoption. Employing a systematic review of academic, governmental, and industry sources, the paper identifies underexplored areas such as rural–urban adoption disparities, lifecycle assessments of EV batteries, and sociocultural barriers, including gender dynamics and entrenched consumer preferences. Its primary contribution is an interdisciplinary framework that integrates technical aspects, such as grid resilience and climate-related battery degradation, with socioeconomic dimensions, providing a holistic overview of EV feasibility in Egypt tailored to Egypt’s context. Key findings reveal infrastructure limitations, inconsistent policy frameworks, and behavioral skepticism as major hurdles, and highlight the untapped potential of renewable energy integration, particularly through synergies between solar PV generation (e.g., Benban Solar Park) and EV charging infrastructure. The rapid electrification of transportation and the proliferation of rooftop solar photovoltaics (PVs) in urban environments are reshaping the operational dynamics of power distribution networks. However, the inherent uncertainty in electric vehicle (EV) behavior—including arrival times, charging preferences, and state-of-charge—as well as spatially and temporally variable solar generation, presents a profound challenge to existing scheduling frameworks. This paper proposes a novel data-driven distributionally robust optimization (DDRO) framework for solar-powered EV charging coordination under spatiotemporal uncertainty. Leveraging empirical datasets of EV usage and solar irradiance from a smart city deployment, the framework constructs Wasserstein ambiguity sets around historical distributions, enabling worst-case-aware decision-making without requiring the assumption of probability laws. The problem is formulated as a two-stage optimization model. The first stage determines day-ahead charging schedules, solar utilization levels, and grid allocations across an urban-scale distribution feeder. The second stage models real-time recourse actions—such as dynamic curtailment or demand reshaping—after uncertainties are realized. Physical grid constraints are modeled using convexified LinDistFlow equations, while EV behavior is segmented into user classes with individualized uncertainty structures. The model is evaluated on a modified IEEE 123-bus feeder with 52 EV-PV nodes, using 15 min resolution over a 24 h horizon and 12 months of real-world data. Comparative results demonstrate that the proposed DDRO method reduces total operational costs by up to 15%, eliminates voltage violations entirely, and improves EV service satisfaction by more than 30% relative to deterministic and stochastic baselines. This work makes three primary contributions: it introduces a robust, tractable optimization architecture that captures spatiotemporal uncertainty using empirical Wasserstein sets; it integrates behavioral and physical modeling within a unified dispatch framework for urban energy-mobility systems; and it demonstrates the value of robust coordination in simultaneously improving grid resilience, renewable utilization, and EV user satisfaction. The results offer practical insights for city-scale planners seeking to enable the reliable and efficient electrification of mobility infrastructure under uncertainty. Full article

This comprehensive review maps the fast-evolving landscape in which artificial intelligence (AI) and deep-learning (DL) techniques converge with the Internet of Things (IoT) to manage energy, comfort, and sustainability across smart environments. A PRISMA-guided search of four databases retrieved 1358 records; after applying inclusion criteria, 143 peer-reviewed studies published between January 2019 and April 2025 were analyzed. This review shows that AI-driven controllers—especially deep-reinforcement-learning agents—deliver median energy savings of 18–35% for HVAC and other major loads, consistently outperforming rule-based and model-predictive baselines. The evidence further reveals a rapid diversification of methods: graph-neural-network models now capture spatial interdependencies in dense sensor grids, federated-learning pilots address data-privacy constraints, and early integrations of large language models hint at natural-language analytics and control interfaces for heterogeneous IoT devices. Yet large-scale deployment remains hindered by fragmented and proprietary datasets, unresolved privacy and cybersecurity risks associated with continuous IoT telemetry, the growing carbon and compute footprints of ever-larger models, and poor interoperability among legacy equipment and modern edge nodes. The authors of researches therefore converges on several priorities: open, high-fidelity benchmarks that marry multivariate IoT sensor data with standardized metadata and occupant feedback; energy-aware, edge-optimized architectures that lower latency and power draw; privacy-centric learning frameworks that satisfy tightening regulations; hybrid physics-informed and explainable models that shorten commissioning time; and digital-twin platforms enriched by language-model reasoning to translate raw telemetry into actionable insights for facility managers and end users. Addressing these gaps will be pivotal to transforming isolated pilots into ubiquitous, trustworthy, and human-centered IoT ecosystems capable of delivering measurable gains in efficiency, resilience, and occupant wellbeing at scale. Waste-to-energy (WtE) are clean technologies that support a circular economy by providing solutions to managing non-recyclable waste while generating alternative energy sources. Despite the promising benefits, technology adoption is challenged by financing constraints, technical maturity, environmental impacts, supporting policies, and public acceptance. A growing number of studies analyzed the acceptability of WtE and identified the factors affecting the adoption of WtE technologies. This study aims to analyze these research hotspots, technologies, and acceptability factors by combining bibliometric and systematic analyses. An initial search from the Web of Science and Scopus databases identified 817 unique documents, and the refinement resulted in 109 for data analysis. The results present a comprehensive overview of the state-of-the-art, providing researchers a basis for future research directions. Among the WtE technologies in the reviewed literature are incineration, anaerobic digestion, gasification, and pyrolysis, with limited studies about refuse-derived fuel and landfilling with gas recovery. The identified common factors include perceived risks, trust, attitudes, perceived benefits, “Not-In-My-BackYard” (NIMBY), awareness, and knowledge. Moreover, the findings present valuable insights for policymakers, practitioners, and WtE project planners to support WtE adoption while achieving sustainable, circular, and low-carbon economies.
