Rapid urbanization has intensified artificial light at night (ALAN) and reduced access to natural dark sky environments. Dark sky parks provide a potential spatial approach for nighttime environmental protection, ecological conservation, and astronomical recreation. This study develops a constraint-based suitability assessment framework for urban dark sky park site selection and applies it to Wuhan, China. Multi-source geospatial data were integrated into a 1 km × 1 km evaluation grid. The AHP–Delphi method was used to determine indicator weights, while land cover constraints were introduced to exclude artificial surfaces from candidate evaluation areas. Weighted overlay analysis, sensitivity analysis, continuous patch screening, and dark sky quality verification were then conducted. The results show that (1) artificial light visibility (ALV) and cloudless days (CVD) are the most important indicators, with weights of 0.328 and 0.250, respectively; (2) 29.38% of the evaluation units are classified as most suitable or more suitable; (3) the spatial pattern of highly suitable areas remain relatively stable, with Jaccard overlap rates of 73.65% and 87.09% under alternative weighting scenarios; and (4) continuous patch screening identifies Caidian and Yangda as priority candidate areas. Further verification using the Bortle Scale, a nine-level classification of night darkness, shows that the Caidian patch reached Bortle class 4 and National Astronomical Observatories (NAOC) dark sky class 1, indicating stronger practical feasibility for dark sky park development. The proposed framework provides a methodological reference for integrating dark sky protection, land use feasibility, and urban planning in metropolitan regions. Full article

Urban microclimates are traditionally interpreted and modelled based on permanent built surfaces, while semi-permanent elements such as stationary vehicles remain largely overlooked in urban climate studies. Despite their distinct radiative and thermal behaviour and increasing spatial prevalence in contemporary cities, parked vehicles are rarely represented in urban microclimate modelling frameworks. This study provides an exploratory assessment of a commonly used three-dimensional modelling workflow to approximate near-vehicle air temperature patterns at the micro-scale by comparing simulated results with field measurements collected in Lisbon, Portugal. Air temperature was measured in an open parking environment with unobstructed sky exposure, at multiple heights above two black and two white parked vehicles during summer, and corresponding simulated values were extracted at matching locations. Simulated mean air temperatures showed reasonable agreement with observations (MAE = 0.6–0.9 °C; RMSE = 0.7–1.3 °C), suggesting that simplified modelling approaches can reproduce general air temperature patterns under controlled conditions. However, larger localised deviations were observed near vehicle surfaces and rear positions, particularly for dark-coloured vehicles, highlighting limitations in resolving fine-scale radiative and aerodynamic processes. The findings indicate that stationary vehicles can be represented as distinct urban surfaces, while emphasising the need for improved parameterisation to enable their integration into urban microclimate models at larger spatial scales. Background. Exposure to artificial light at night can lead to circadian disruption and health risks. It can cause mood swings, confusion, and depression. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to assess the relationship between the illuminance of urban lighting and the health of residents. Methods: This study was carried out among residents of two similar towns, one with typical street lighting and a Dark Sky Park characterized by reduced lighting. A total of 272 respondents participated in this study. A self-administered questionnaire and the WHOQOL-BREF were used among the respondents. Results. People living in the Dark Sky Park were more likely to be satisfied with their sleep (p < 0.001). In fact, 58.7% of Dark Sky Park residents reported no sleep problems. In the control town, only 49.25% did (p = 0.04). The sleep duration was similar in the two towns, but Dark Sky Park residents were statistically less likely to use sleeping pills and window blinds. People exposed to typical street lighting at night reported suffering from eye diseases, cardiovascular diseases, and mood changes more often than those living in the Dark Sky Park. The environmental and physical quality of life, as measured by the WHOQOL-BREF, were significantly higher in the Dark Sky Park residents than in the control town (p < 0.05). Conclusions. People living in places with limited illuminance declare better health and a higher quality of life in the physical and environmental domains. Full article

Urban parks often represent the last viable habitats for wildlife in city centres, functioning as crucial refuges and biodiversity hotspots for a wide array of plant and animal species. This study investigates the issue of light pollution in urban parks in selected Polish cities from the perspective of sustainable urban development and dark-sky friendly ordinances. Field data conducted in 2024 and 2025 include measurements of Upward Light Output Ratio (ULOR), illuminance, luminance, correlated colour temperature (CCT), and spectral characteristics of light sources. In addition, an analysis of changes in the level of light pollution in the studied parks and their surroundings between 2012 and 2025 was performed using data from the VIIRS (Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite) located on the Suomi NPP satellite. Results highlight the mismatch between sustainable development objectives and the current practice of lighting in most of the analysed parks. The study emphasises the need for better integration of light pollution mitigation in urban spatial policies and provides recommendations for environmentally and socially responsible lighting design in urban parks. Dark skies, a vital natural and cultural resource, have been increasingly threatened by light pollution due to rapid urbanization, leading to ecological degradation and biodiversity loss. As a key strategy for sustainable regional development, dark sky parks (DSPs) not only preserve nocturnal environments but also enhance livability by balancing urban expansion and ecological conservation. This study develops a novel framework for evaluating DSP suitability, integrating ecological and socio-economic dimensions, including the resource base (e.g., nighttime light levels, meteorological conditions, and air quality) and development conditions (e.g., population density, transportation accessibility, and tourism infrastructure). Using the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) as a case study, we employ Delphi expert consultation, GIS spatial analysis, and multi-criteria decision-making to identify optimal DSP locations and prioritize conservation zones. Our key findings reveal the following: (1) spatial heterogeneity in suitability, with high-potential zones being concentrated in the GBA’s northeastern, central–western, and southern regions; (2) ecosystem advantages of forests, wetlands, and high-elevation areas for minimizing light pollution; (3) coastal and island regions as ideal DSP sites due to the low light interference and high ecotourism potential. By bridging environmental assessments and spatial planning, this study provides a replicable model for DSP site selection, offering policymakers actionable insights to integrate dark sky preservation into sustainable urban–regional development strategies. Our results underscore the importance of DSPs in fostering ecological resilience, nighttime tourism, and regional livability, contributing to the broader discourse on sustainable landscape planning in high-urbanization contexts. Light pollution is a rapidly growing environmental challenge, with the global brightness of the night sky increasing by an average of 9.6% per year. This study assessed the ecological impact of artificial light at night (ALAN) on protected areas in Poland, including all 23 national and 125 landscape parks, from 2012 to 2023. Based on VIIRS satellite radiance data and modelled sky surface brightness (Sa), we developed and applied the Ecological Light Pollution (ELP) scale, which classifies areas into four classes of ecological impact: strong (ELP-A), pronounced (ELP-B), noticeable (ELP-C), and weak or none (ELP-D). The analysis revealed that 38.5% of protected areas are affected by artificial skyglow at levels classified as ELP-B or ELP-C. Under cloudy conditions, which intensify light pollution effects, 22% of national parks and 41.8% of landscape parks fell into these classes. Notably, Wielkopolski National Park exhibited the most pronounced impact (ELP-B) even under clear skies, primarily due to its proximity to the Poznań metropolitan area. In contrast, Bieszczadzki and Białowieski National Parks recorded near-natural darkness (ELP-D). These light pollution effects can disrupt nocturnal species’ behaviour, reduce biodiversity, and degrade opportunities for dark-sky tourism. The findings emphasise the need for targeted mitigation, including stricter outdoor lighting regulations, formal dark-sky protection zones, and public education to preserve protected areas’ ecological integrity and tourism potential. Anthropogenic light impacts both wildlife and human well-being, and national parks are some of the only remaining large swaths of land where natural dark skies remain. Over the past two decades, a significant amount of science has contributed both to our understanding of these impacts and to engineering advances to reduce negative lighting effects. This has resulted in changes to lighting infrastructure in some national parks, and growth in Dark Sky Certification for many protected areas globally. To date, changing infrastructure, such as street and parking lot lighting, to less intrusive hues and intensities or removing lights altogether have been some of the sustainable changes made in these areas. This study advances our understanding of lighting issues by examining national park visitors’ perceptions of personal lighting use (e.g., headlamps). Specifically, this study explores camper and mountaineer perceptions of personal lighting devices and their impact on social and ecological systems in Grand Teton National Park, USA. During peak visitation in the summer of 2023, 17 mountaineer interviews and 16 general camper interviews took place in the park at night. Results indicate that campers and mountaineers are largely unaware of anthropogenic light impacts on wildlife and humans. However, once informed, they are willing to change their behaviors and reduce the use of personal lighting devices and use more wildlife-friendly lighting with amber or red settings (which, to date, are just emerging and available for general consumers by several companies). These results provide insights for developing educational strategies and personal lighting engineering designs that will ultimately lead to more sustainable normative shifts capable of reducing anthropogenic lighting impacts in parks and beyond. In the digital age, effective website promotion plays a pivotal role in attracting visitors to alternative forms of tourism. This study examines the websites of 177 UNESCO Global Geoparks and 190 International Dark Sky Parks, employing specific evaluation criteria essential for enhancing the promotion of alternative tourism forms such as geotourism and astronomical tourism. Our findings reveal that geopark websites adeptly promote geotourism through a diverse array of digital tools, with the potential for minor enhancements. In contrast, the majority of dark sky park websites exhibit limited visibility in the promotion of astronomical tourism. These identified criteria and results serve as crucial benchmarks for optimizing the websites of UNESCO Global Geoparks and International Dark Sky Parks, thus ensuring the comprehensive fulfillment of established promotional standards for alternative tourism destinations. Astrotourism is considered to be a modern form of ecotourism. The main resource for astrotourism is a high-quality night sky, but this is very sensitive to natural as well as anthropogenic factors; for example, land utilization and expansion of urban areas often cause the negative effect of light pollution. The aim of the study is to perform a lighting survey by night sky brightness (NSB) measurements using the sky quality meter (SQM-L) at 20 study sites of the Slovenské stredohorie Upland region (Slovakia) and to assess the region’s potential for astrotourism development (PAD) using a multicriteria analysis. The NSB values ranged from 19.90 (city Žiar nad Hronom at Žiarska kotlina Basin) to 21.54 mag/arcsec2 (recreation area Poľana at Poľana Mountains). At 14 out of 20 study sites, the NSB values even reached 21.2 mag/arcsec2, as recommended by the International Dark-Sky Association for dark-sky parks. Four study sites were categorized as sites with medium PAD, and sixteen with low PAD. No study site reached a high or very high PAD. The best conditions for astrotourism development are fulfilled mainly by the Poľana Mountains geographical unit. The findings can be used for sustainable astrotourism development, land management, and planning to ensure socioeconomic development, together with nature and dark-sky conservation. Full article

Light pollution is a type of pollution that climaxes in cities and occurs increasingly away from them, due to the increase of artificial lighting and inappropriate lighting design (selection of luminaires, aiming, illuminance/luminance levels, and spectral characteristics). Increasingly, light pollution also affects the countryside due to local lighting but also distant lighting propagating from urban areas. This has a significant impact on ecosystems and astronomical observing sites. This work analyzes the main facts about light pollution (causes, impact, and solutions) and studies the methods, parameters, and special requirements for planning of light pollution protected areas. This dark sky park planning methodology is implemented as a case study in mount Parnon which has been selected due to its significance as a Natura 2000 protected area and because it is Greece’s most popular astronomical observing site. Mount Parnon is located close to two major cities as well as significant highways, however the site itself remains dark due to its sparse population. Planning a dark sky park involves a complete study of facts regarding the specific site. Existing lighting installations are surveyed in detail by recording types of luminaires and lamps and recording their positions in a map. Lighting illuminance levels are measured by photometers and spectra are analyzed using a spectrometer. Sky brightness levels measurements are performed using specialized photometers and light pollution origins are traced using wide-field photography. Finally, a proposal is made for a dark sky park scheme suited to the specific case of the site. Full article
