The microstructure and properties of a cobalt-free, cost-effective Al0.4CrFe2Ni2 medium-entropy alloy (MEA) after multi-stage thermomechanical processing, including annealing, rolling over a wide temperature range from hot to cryogenic conditions, and subsequent precipitation strengthening, were investigated in the present study. The initially cast microstructure was effectively homogenized through hot rolling with an 80% thickness reduction followed by homogenization annealing, resulting in the formation of a single-phase supersaturated solid solution and enhanced stability of plastic deformation. Strengthening of the MEA was achieved by rolling under both ambient and cryogenic conditions, with the deformation process predominantly governed by shear band formation. However, rolling under cryogenic conditions led to a more pronounced localization of plastic deformation, promoting the formation of deformation nanotwins and resulting in significantly higher strengthening compared to ambient rolling, with the alloy reaching a yield strength of 1040 MPa and an ultimate tensile strength of 1235 MPa. Precipitation hardening was governed by the formation of B2-type (ordered body-centered cubic, BCC) precipitates, which preferentially nucleated along deformation bands, thereby effectively strengthening the alloy to a yield strength of 1420 MPa and an ultimate tensile strength of 1465 MPa. Our results demonstrate that the investigated MEA offers a wide range of tunable mechanical properties, which can be effectively tailored through appropriate combinations of thermomechanical processing routes. The nominal compositions of Fe65Co10−xNi10−xCr15Si2x (x = 1, 2, and 3 at.%) medium-entropy alloys (MEAs) were designed and fabricated by vacuum arc melting. Their microstructure, hardness, and mechanical properties were systematically characterized. Corrosion behavior was evaluated in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution by potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The investigated MEAs exhibit a dual-phase microstructure composed of face-centered cubic (FCC) and body-centered-cubic (BCC) phases. With increasing Si content, yield strength and ultimate tensile strength increase, while uniform elongation decreases. Hardness also increases with increasing Si content. For the x = 3 MEA, the yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, and hardness of are ~518 MPa, ~1053 MPa, and 262 ± 4.8 HV, respectively. The observed strengthening can be primarily attributed to solid solution strengthening effect by Si. Polarization curves indicate that the x = 3 MEA exhibits the best corrosion resistance with the lowest corrosion current density ((0.401 ± 0.19) × 10−6 A × cm−2) and corrosion rate ((4.65 ± 0.19) × 10–2 μm × year−1)). Equivalent electric circuit analysis suggests the formation of a stable passive oxide film on the MEAs. This conclusion is supported by the capacitive behavior, high impedance values (> 104 Ω cm2) at low frequencies, and phase angles within a narrow window of 80.05°~80.64° in the medium-frequency region. The passive-film thickness was calculated and the corrosion morphology was analyzed by SEM. These results provide a reference for developing high-strength, corrosion-resistant, medium-entropy alloys. In this study, 20 wt.% of Nb was incorporated into a CrFeNi medium-entropy alloy (MEA) powder system to prepare CrFeNi-Nb composite coatings on a Q235B mild steel substrate by laser cladding technology. The effects of Nb addition on the phase composition, microstructure, and wear resistance of CrFeNi coatings were systematically investigated. Microstructural characterization revealed that the CrFeNi coating exhibited a single face-centered cubic (FCC) phase structure, while the CrFeNi-Nb composite coating demonstrated a dual-phase structure comprising FCC phase and Laves phase. The Laves phase significantly enhanced the microhardness and wear resistance of the coating. The average microhardness of the CrFeNi-Nb coating increased by 259.62% compared to the substrate and 190.58% compared to the Nb-free CrFeNi coating. The average coefficient of friction (COF) of the coating decreased from 0.74 to 0.68; the wear rate reduced from 5.77 × 10−4 mm3 N−1 m−1 to 2.26 × 10−4 mm3 N−1 m−1; and the weight loss decreased from 10.77 mg to 4.3 mg. The experimental results demonstrated that the addition of Nb promoted the formation of the Laves phase in the CrFeNi MEA, which effectively improved the wear resistance of the coating. Full article

This study investigates the interfacial reactions of FeCoNiCr and FeCoNiMn medium-entropy alloys (MEAs) with Sn and Sn-3Ag-0.5Cu (SAC305) solders at 250 °C. The evolution of interfacial microstructures is analyzed over various aging periods. For comparison, the FeCoNiCrMn high-entropy alloy (HEA) is also examined. In the Sn/FeCoNiCr system, a faceted (Fe,Cr,Co)Sn2 layer initially forms at the interface. Upon aging, the significant spalling of large (Fe,Cr,Co)Sn2 particulates into the solder matrix occurs. Additionally, an extremely large, plate-like (Co,Ni)Sn4 phase forms at a later stage. In contrast, the Sn/FeCoNiMn reaction produces a finer-grained (Fe,Co,Mn)Sn2 phase dispersed in the solder, accompanied by the formation of the large (Co,Ni)Sn4 phase. This observation suggests that Mn promotes the formation of finer intermetallic compounds (IMCs), while Cr facilitates the spalling of larger IMC particulates. The Sn/FeCoNiCrMn system exhibits stable interfacial behavior, with the (Fe,Cr,Co)Sn2 layer showing no significant changes over time. The interfacial behavior and microstructure are primarily governed by the dissolution of the constituent elements and composition ratio of the HEAs, as well as their interactions with Sn. Similar trends are observed in the SAC305 solder reactions, where a larger amount of fine (Fe,Co,Cu)Sn2 particles spall from the interface. This behavior is likely attributed to Cu doping, which enhances nucleation and stabilizes the IMC phases, promoting the formation of finer particles. The wettability of SAC305 solder on MEA/HEA substrates was further evaluated by contact angle measurements. These findings suggest that the presence of Mn in the substrate enhances the wettability of the solder. Full article

Aerospace and marine engineering impose higher requirements on mechanical properties and lightweight design of materials. In this work, combining the high mechanical properties of FeCrNi medium entropy alloy (MEA) and the lightweight advantages of lattice structure, four types of high-performance FeCrNi MEA lattice structures (BCC, BCCZ, FCC, and FCCZ) were prepared by selective laser melting (SLM) technology, and their dynamic mechanical properties were systematically characterized via split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) method. The results demonstrate that the FCCZ FeCrNi MEA lattice structure exhibits superior comprehensive performance among the four lattice structures, achieving the highest specific compressive strength of 59.1 MPa·g−1·cm−3 and specific energy absorption of 26.3 J/g, significantly outperforming conventional lattice materials including 316L and AlSi10Mg alloys. Furthermore, the finite element simulation and Johnson-Cook (J-C) constitutive model of the dynamic compression process can effectively predict the microstructural evolution and mechanical response of lattice structure, providing critical theoretical guidance for optimizing the design of high-performance lattice structure materials. CoCrNi medium-entropy alloy (MEA) coatings prepared using laser cladding (LC) with unique properties have aroused great interest in recent years and have been widely studied. However, limited studies have been conducted on the effect of adding Al/Fe on the wear properties of CoCrNi MEA coatings prepared on the surface of stainless steel. In this study, AlCoCrFeNi, CoCrFeNi, and CoCrNi MEA LC coatings were prepared on a stainless steel substrate. The grain structures and microscopic morphologies of coatings were characterized, and the wear mechanisms were analyzed using the nano-indentation and wear tests. The hardness-strengthening mechanism was theoretically investigated using phase diagrams and molecular dynamics (MD). The phase diagram results show that the addition of Al lowered the nucleation initiation temperature, thereby increasing the nucleation rate and forming more grains. Moreover, according to the Voronoi volumes and mean–square atomic displacements (MASD) results using MD, the addition of Al makes the appearance of severe localized lattice distortions, while the addition of Fe tends to form short-range ordered structures. In summary, fine-grain strengthening and the hardness strengthening caused by local lattice distortion were the main strengthening mechanisms of AlCoCrFeNi. These findings are highly significant for expanding the application potential and provide profound insights into the wear properties of the CoCrNi MEA coatings. Full article

The temperature dependence of the mechanical properties of the CoCrFeNi medium-entropy alloy (MEA) manufactured by laser-directed energy deposition (L-DED) and additionally annealed at 1200 °C for 24 h was studied. The microstructure of the as-deposited alloy was represented by a single-phase face-centered cubic structure with coarse columnar grains and a high density of dislocation. Annealing resulted in the development of recrystallization and a reduction in dislocation density. The CoCrFeNi alloy produced by L-DED demonstrated mechanical properties comparable with those of the fine-grained equiatomic CoCrFeMnNi alloy, produced by casting followed by thermomechanical processing. Namely, as-deposited CoCrFeNi had a yield strength (YS) and ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of YS = 370 MPa and UTS = 610 MPa at room temperature, and YS = 565 MPa and UTS = 965 MPa at cryogenic temperature, along with a ductility of ~60%. Annealing resulted in a decrease in strength to YS = 180/350 MPa at 293/77 K. A quantitative analysis of various strengthening mechanisms showed that some strength increment of the as-deposited alloy was ensured by the high dislocation density formed during L-DED. Full article

Fe40Mn20Cr20Ni20 medium-entropy alloy (MEA) has a single-phase crystal structure with high strength and good ductility at room temperature. It is important to study the hot deformation behavior for this alloy at a partially recrystallized state for possible high-temperature applications. In this investigation, the tensile tests were conducted on sheet materials treated via cold rolling combined with annealing at strain rates of 1 × 10−3–1 × 10−1 s−1 and deformation temperatures of 573–873 K. And the hyperbolic sine model was used to study the relationship between the peak stress, deformation energy storage and Zener–Hollomon parameter (Z parameter) of Fe40Mn20Cr20Ni20 medium-entropy alloys under high-temperature tension. According to the Arrhenius-type model, the constitutive equation of the alloys based on the flow stress was constructed, and the deformation activation energy and material parameters under different strain conditions were obtained. Based on the power dissipation theory and the instability criterion of the dynamic material model, the power dissipation diagram and the instability diagram were constructed, and the hot working map with a strain of 0.1 was obtained. The results show that the hyperbolic sine relation between the peak stress and Zener–Hollomon parameters can be well satisfied, and the deformation activation energy Q is 242.51 KJ/mol. Finally, the excellent thermo-mechanical processing range is calculated based on the hot working map. The flow instability region is 620–700 K and the strain rate is 2 × 10−3–4 × 10−3 s−1, as well as in the range of 787–873 K and 2 × 10−3–2.73 × 10−2 s−1. The optimum thermo-mechanical window is 850–873 K, ε˙ = 1 × 10−3–2 × 10−3 s−1. Full article

Equiatomic medium-entropy alloy (MEA) FeNiCr-B4C (0, 1, and 3 wt.% B4C) coatings were deposited onto an AISI 1040 steel substrate using pulsed laser cladding. Based on an SEM microstructural analysis, it was found that the cross-sections of all the obtained specimens were characterized by an average coating thickness of 400 ± 20 μm, a sufficiently narrow (100 ± 20 μm) “coating–substrate” transition zone, and the presence of a small number of defects, including cracks and pores. An XRD analysis showed that the formed coatings consisted of a single face-centered cubic (FCC) γ-phase and the space group Fm-3m, regardless of the B4C content. However, additional TEM analysis of the FeNiCr coating with 3 wt.% B4C revealed a two-phase FCC structure consisting of grains (FCC-1 phase, Fm-3m) up to 1 µm in size and banded interlayers (FCC-2 phase, Fm-3m) between the grains. The grains were clean with a low density of dislocations. Raman spectroscopy confirmed the presence of B4C carbides inside the FeNiCr (1 and 3 wt.% B4C) coatings, as evidenced by detected peaks corresponding to amorphous carbon and peaks indicating the stretching of C-B-C chains. The mechanical characterization of the FeNiCr-B4C coatings specified that additions of 1 and 3 wt.% B4C resulted in a notable increase in microhardness of 16% and 38%, respectively, with a slight decrease in ductility of 4% and 10%, respectively, compared to the B4C-free FeNiCr coating. Thus, the B4C addition can be considered a promising method for strengthening laser-cladded MEA FeNiCr-B4C coatings. Full article

Metal alloys with enhanced mechanical properties are in considerable demand in various industries. Thus, this study focused on the development of nanosized precipitates in Fe71.25(CoCrMnNi)23.75Cu3Al2 maraging medium-entropy alloy (MEA). The Fe-based alloying design in the MEA samples initially formed a body-centered cubic (BCC) lath martensite structure. After a subsequent annealing process at 450 °C for varying durations (1, 3, 5, and 7 h), nanosized precipitates (B2 intermetallic) enriched with Cu and with a diameter of approximately 5 nm formed, significantly increasing the hardness of the alloy. The highest Vickers microhardness of 597 HV, along with compressive yield strength and ultimate compressive strength of 2079 MPa and 2843 MPa, respectively, was achieved for the Aged_7h sample. Therefore, the BCC lath martensite structure with B2 intermetallics leads to remarkable mechanical properties. Full article

FeCrNi medium entropy alloy (MEA) has been widely regarded for its excellent mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. However, insufficient strength limits its industrial application. Intermetallic particle dispersion strengthening is considered to be an effective method to improve strength, which is expected to solve this problem. In this work, microstructural evolution and mechanical behavior of FeCrNi MEA with different Si content were investigated. We found that the precipitation of fine σ particles can be formed in situ by thermomechanical treatment of Si doping FeCrNi MEAs. The FeCrNiSi0.15 MEA exhibits a good combination of strength and ductility, with yield strength and tensile elongation of 1050 MPa and 7.84%, respectively. The yield strength is almost five times that of the as-cast FeCrNi MEA. The strength enhancement is mainly attributed to the grain-boundary strengthening and precipitation strengthening caused by fine σ particles. Full article

Microstructure, mechanical properties, wear resistance, corrosion and corrosive wear resistance of AlCrFeNiWx (x = 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4) medium-entropy alloys (MEAs) prepared by vacuum arc melting process were investigated. Results of the study show that the microstructure of as-cast AlCrFeNiWx alloys is composed of one disordered Fe-Cr rich BCC phase (A2) and one ordered NiAl-rich (B2) phase when x = 0 and 0.1; W particles appear when x ≥ 0.2. Hardness and strength of AlCrFeNi alloy are markedly increased by the W addition. The strengthening mechanisms include solid-solution strengthening, nano-sized precipitation strengthening and second phase strengthening. The excellent ductility of AlCrFeNi is retained with minor W addition (x ≤ 0.2) but it considerably declines as more W is added, resulting from the precipitation of excessive large-sized W particles. W addition improves the pitting resistance and passivation property of AlCrFeNi HEA in 3.5 wt. % NaCl solution. It is shown that AlCrFeNiW0.3 possesses the highest corrosion resistance, as reflected by the highest Ecorr and the lowest Icorr. Tungsten notably enhances the resistance of this HEA to wear and corrosive wear. AlCrFeNiW0.4 with the highest strength and hardness exhibits the lowest wear volume loss under both dry and corrosive wear conditions. Full article

FeCrNi medium entropy alloy (MEA) is a promising structural material due to its outstanding mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. However, study on the high-temperature tribological behaviors of FeCrNi MEA is still scarce. This work investigates the tribological performances of the FeCrNi MEA against Si3N4 balls over typical operating temperatures from 25 to 800 °C. The FeCrNi MEA exhibits excellent wear resistance at an intermediate temperature of 600 °C. The microstructure characterization of the wear tracks reveals a transition in the wear mechanism from abrasive wear at 25 °C to oxidative-delamination wear at 600 °C. The improved tribological performances are mainly attributed to the high Cr content, which promotes the formation of the compact oxide layer and the precipitation of the hard sigma (σ) phase. A novel Co-free non-equiatomic Ni2FeCr medium-entropy alloy (MEA) was designed, and the Hall–Petch strengthening by grain boundaries and annealing twin boundaries was investigated. For this purpose, the alloy was prepared by cold rolling and recrystallization at 873–1323 K for 40 min–6 h. Annealing at different temperatures revealed that Ni2CrFe alloy forms a stable face-centered cubic (FCC) solid solution. Mean grain sizes (excluding annealing twin boundaries) and mean crystallite sizes (including both grain and annealing twin boundaries) were determined using the linear intercept method and the equivalent circle diameter in electron back-scattered diffraction (EBSD) soft. Tensile tests at 293 K indicated that the Hall-Petch slopes of grain sizes and crystallite sizes are 673 and 544 MPa μm1/2, respectively, and this contribution was then subtracted from the overall strength to calculate the intrinsic uniaxial lattice strength (90 MPa). Additionally, tensile tests, performed between 293 K and 873 K, revealed that the Ni2CrFe MEA has a stronger resistance to softening at high temperatures. Transmission electron microscopy of deformed specimens revealed the formation of dislocation pile-ups at annealing twin boundaries, indicating that it is also an obstacle to dislocation slip. Furthermore, the thickening of the annealing twin boundary after deformation was observed and illustrated by the interaction between different dislocations and annealing twin boundaries. Full article

Abundant nanotwins and the dual face-centered cubic−hexagonal close-packed (FCC-HCP) phases were formed in some specimens. The Taguchi experimental method and analysis of variance (ANOVA) were applied to find the optimized parameters. The control factors are five deposition parameters: substrate bias, substrate temperature, working pressure, rotation speed and pulsed frequency. According to the signal-to-noise ratio results, the optimized parameters for low electrical resistivity (98.2 ± 0.8 μΩ·cm), low surface roughness (0.5 ± 0.1 nm) and high hardness (9.3 ± 0.2 GPa) were achieved and verified with confirmed experiments.
