Social media platforms and user-generated content (UGC) have become central to how travelers discover and evaluate cultural destinations, yet lesser-known second-tier heritage sites remain substantially underrepresented in digital tourism research. This study investigates how Chinese tourists perceive and engage with the intangible cultural heritage (ICH) of Lamphun, Thailand, through UGC collected from three major Chinese social media platforms (WeChat, Douyin, and Rednote) spanning the period from 2019 to 2023. A total of 642 relevant posts were analyzed using a mixed-methods analytical framework comprising SnowNLP-based Chinese-language sentiment analysis, rule-based tourism intention classification, and TF-IDF-driven K-means thematic clustering. Results indicate an overall predominance of positive sentiment, with sentiment score emerging as the strongest predictor of tourism intention. Thematic clustering revealed three distinct experiential dimensions, with culinary heritage and contemporary local lifestyle and cafe exploration generating the highest sentiment distribution and within-cluster tourism intention rate. These findings demonstrate the analytical value of integrated UGC data mining for underrepresented ICH destinations and offer empirical insights to support data-driven destination marketing strategies and destination management organization (DMO) decision-making for the promotion of secondary cultural heritage destinations. Urban ethnic enclaves are historically layered cultural landscapes whose public signage encodes community vitality, power relations, and cultural identity in ways that conventional land-use inventories cannot capture. Addressing the absence of scalable, longitudinal computational methods for monitoring such at-risk landscapes, this study develops a reproducible digital-mapping pipeline that operationalises linguistic-landscape analysis as a cultural-heritage monitoring tool for heritage-sensitive land-use planning. Taking Daerim-dong—Seoul’s primary Joseonjok (Korean Chinese) enclave—as a case, we process 38,640 Kakao Map Road View images across 17 annual cross-sections (2008–2024). The pipeline integrates four methodological components: a bounded Spatial Weighting Correction that adjusts for uneven historical coverage; zero-shot semantic sign-function classification using the Qwen2-7B-Instruct model; an exploratory Difference-in-Differences design probing the 2016–2017 THAAD geopolitical disruption; and a Boundary Permeability Ratio (BPR) for tracking enclave edge dynamics. The results document a three-phase trajectory—rapid bilingual expansion (2008–2016), stabilisation (2016–2019), and a COVID-period contraction (2019–2024)—and show that raw sign-count metrics can systematically overstate minority-language decline during economic crises once crisis-period signage is isolated. The BPR is presented as a candidate leading indicator of enclave contraction whose operational thresholds remain to be calibrated through multi-enclave validation. As a methodological proof-of-concept, the study illustrates how computational street-view analysis can support cultural-landscape governance, offering urban planners and heritage managers an actionable, transparent baseline for monitoring at-risk multicultural urban landscapes. Annotation and indexing of classical Chinese medical texts enable the extraction of core information, facilitating structured annotation and standardised indexing. These processes provide essential support for knowledge retrieval, digital utilisation, and in-depth analysis of these texts. Recent advances in digital technologies have opened new possibilities for annotation and indexing, offering transformative approaches to address challenges arising from the abstract, concise, and complex nature of classical Chinese medical literature. However, existing research has largely overlooked the intrinsic interconnection and synergistic mechanisms between annotation and indexing within the workflow. This study examines annotation and indexing as an integrated whole, reviewing the current state of research, identifying existing challenges, and proposing future directions. The findings reveal that major challenges in the annotation and indexing of classical Chinese medical texts centre on four key areas: cultural connotation, rule formulation, result dissemination, and technical algorithms. Addressing these issues requires a systematic approach, including the development of a cultural heritage framework for Traditional Chinese Medicine, the establishment of standardised annotation and indexing principles, the construction of high-quality corpora, the optimisation of data circulation mechanisms, and the refinement of intelligent algorithms. Advancing the annotation and indexing of classical Chinese medical texts not only promotes their efficient circulation and secondary utilisation but also lays a solid foundation for the large-scale mining of Traditional Chinese Medicine knowledge, its modern transmission, and cross-disciplinary intelligent applications, thereby driving the innovative development of the field. As one of the most representative cultural heritages, traditional Chinese opera is characterized by highly refined symbolic contexts and stylized narrative structures. Nevertheless, the contemporary generation often struggles with its abstract expression and language, leading to declining attendance. In addition, urbanization and digital entertainment have squeezed out its living spaces, increasing demand for more diverse experiences. To address these issues, this study conducts a systematic and thematically categorized review of the literature, exploring how extended reality (XR) reshapes the spatial and experiential representation of opera culture. Drawing upon the reality–virtuality continuum and spatial computing as theoretical foundations, the research investigates the features, workflows, and cultural adaptability of augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and mixed reality (MR), identifying how each modality of XR supports distinct modes of space generation and audience engagement. Through comparative analysis, we propose three XR-based approaches for reinterpreting Chinese opera: AR for theatrical spaces visualization, VR for performative narratives embodiment, and MR for opera cultural elements superposition. Overall, the research clarifies that XR can be used as a comprehensive medium to enhance replicability and user perception, contributing to the preservation and communication of humanity’s traditional culture. Background: Accented speech contains talker-indexical cues that listeners can use to infer social group membership, yet it remains unclear how the auditory system categorizes accent variability and how this process depends on language experience. Methods: The current study used EEG and the MMN oddball paradigm to test pre-attentive neural sensitivity to accent changes of English words stopped produced by Canadian English or Mandarin Chinese-accented English talkers. Three participant groups were tested: Native English listeners, L1-Mandarin listeners, and Heritage Mandarin listeners. Results: In the Native English and L1-Mandarin groups, we observed MMNs to the Canadian accented English deviant, indicating that the brain can group speech by accent despite substantive inter-talker variation and that this grouping is consistent with an experience-dependent sensitivity to accent. Exposure to Mandarin Chinese-accented English modulated MMN magnitude. Time-frequency analyses suggested that α and low-β power during accent encoding varied with language background, with Native English listeners showing stronger activity when presented with Mandarin Chinese-accented English. Finally, the neurophysiological response in the Heritage Mandarin group reflected a broader phonological space encompassing both Canadian English and Mandarin-accented English, and its magnitude was predicted by Chinese proficiency. Conclusions: These findings provide brain-based evidence that automatic accent categorization is not uniform across listeners but interacts with native phonology and second-language experience. Background/Objectives: The functional architecture connecting speech production and reading comprehension remains unclear in multilinguals. This study investigated the cross-modal interaction between these systems in trilinguals to resolve the debate between Age of Acquisition (AoA) and usage frequency. Methods: We recruited 144 Uyghur (L1)–Chinese (L2)–English (L3) trilinguals, a population uniquely dissociating acquisition order from social dominance. Participants completed a production-to-comprehension priming paradigm, naming pictures in one language before performing a lexical decision task on translated words. Data were analyzed using linear mixed-effects models. Results: Significant cross-language priming confirmed an integrated lexicon, yet a fundamental asymmetry emerged. The top-down influence of production was governed by AoA; earlier-acquired languages (specifically L1) generated more effective priming signals than L2. Conversely, the bottom-up efficiency of recognition was driven by social usage frequency; the socially dominant L2 was the most receptive target, surpassing the heritage L1. Conclusions: The trilingual lexicon operates via “Two Rules”: a history-driven production system (AoA) and an environment-driven recognition system (Social Usage). This asymmetrical baseline challenges simple bilingual extensions and clarifies the dynamics of multilingual language control. Full article

This study explores the fluidity of multilingual and intercultural identities among Australian university students participating in a study abroad (SA) program in China. It pilots a structured analytical framework to analyse visual metaphors created by the participants, examining how Chinese language learners depict their evolving identities, thereby uncovering their fluid nature. An analysis of three case studies of Australian students—one of Chinese heritage, one Australian-born of Serbian heritage, and one Japanese-born who moved to Australia in childhood—illustrates their unique trajectories of identity formation. Multimodal data reveals that while the visual metaphors of all three students point to fluidity, with sub-themes of dynamism, blending, and layeredness, the SA experience triggers diverse individual processes of identity negotiation and transformation. This study contributes to the fields of multilingual and intercultural education and SA through its innovative use of a visual metaphor analysis approach, which effectively captures and decodes the complexities of intercultural development among language learners in an SA environment. The study advocates visual metaphor as a valuable tool for both researching and understanding how multilinguals, especially those whose first and home language is not English, reflect on their multilingual and intercultural identity and experiences. My sinuous life as a humanist traversing disciplinary, periodic, geographical, and national borders has yielded palpable wonders, the most wonderful being the opportunity to live and connect many lives. I was made bilingual, bicultural, and cosmopolitan in colonial Hong Kong, a classicist at Pepperdine University, a Renaissance scholar at Berkeley, an intersectional Americanist at UCLA, and a polyglot comparatist by UCEAP. The many splendors of literary America unraveled by Bruins of disparate stripes have driven me to herald the variegated beauty of Chinese American heritage. I have gone from being an outsider, a suspect even, in both English and Asian American studies to being a humanist resource. It behooves me to usher in, among the Bruins, my mother tongue—the language of the Tang poets, gold miners, and the Transpacific railroad workers, and to stage Cantonese opera. “In my end is my beginning.” Full article

Post-monolingual circumstances are increasing reflecting the growing occurrence of multilingualism, migration, and advancing communication technologies. Cultural groups value maintaining heritage languages while also learning the ones in their new life environments. Heritage language maintenance is, for example, promoted by immigrant parents and grandparents in the Northern Netherlands, as well as in other locations. Maintaining cultural heritage language also needs innovative instructional approaches and pedagogy. This article presents a study exploring the role of peer collaboration in supporting children’s Chinese heritage language use and learning in New York City. Drawn from sociocultural theory and extended in prior research examining peer collaboration in writing development, we focused on understanding the role of peer collaboration in Chinese immigrant children’s Chinese heritage language use in an after-school (Sunday school) program. In collaboration with organizers of the school, our study involved a 30 min peer collaboration writing activity. The activity invited children to collaborate with a peer to write a letter about the fun experiences they had in the Chinese language school. Interaction processes and products were collected and analyzed to address two primary research questions including the following: What are the languages and peer collaboration processes that children in this Chinese language school used in their conversations and in the text of the letters they created together? How did children’s use of Chinese and English during peer collaboration relate to language in the texts they wrote? Results indicated that children played diverse, mutually supportive roles during their collaboration, such as suggesting narrative sequences for the letter, including confirming/agreeing, and correcting and clarifying, although different pairs balanced such strategies somewhat differently. Among numerous findings is that children used Mandarin most frequently when narrating events that they found enjoyable at the Chinese language school. The findings fill a gap in research on multilingual peer collaboration, in particular with Chinese and English in the United States. In addition to those findings, research in an after-school heritage language program provides a model for innovative research in practice. Full article

As cities densify and lifestyles become increasingly individualized, older adults face heightened risks of isolation and reduced wellbeing. Yet in historic Chinese neighborhoods, everyday socio-cultural practices—square dancing, Mahjong, community gardening and street markets—continue to foster social cohesion and spatial familiarity. This study employs Christopher Alexander’s pattern-language framework to examine how these practices are spatially embedded across six traditional neighborhoods in Chengdu. Drawing on systematic field observation, photographic surveys and typological mapping, it identifies recurring spatial configurations that support older adults’ participation and cultural continuity. While many canonical patterns remain relevant, the analysis shows how several require contextual reinterpretation to reflect Chinese collectivism, threshold sociability and informal public-space use. Synthesizing these insights, the paper develops a pattern-based design toolkit for culturally sensitive urban regeneration, contributing to age-friendly planning grounded in lived spatial practices. Although centered on six historic neighborhoods in Chengdu, the findings are intended primarily for Chinese heritage-led regeneration and—where comparable high-density morphologies, edge conditions and management regimes exist—are cautiously transferable to heritage districts elsewhere. Sensory heritage encompasses culturally valued practices, rituals, and everyday activities experienced through the senses. While sight often dominates, hearing and smelling are generally more immersive and pervasive. Soundscape research is a well-established field within urban studies; however, smellscape remains insufficiently recognised. This study is part of Multimodal Hong Kong, a project aimed at documenting sensory cultural heritage across the city by capturing the complex interplay between soundscape, smellscape, urban experiences, everyday activities, and memory. We investigated the multisensory environment at Wong Tai Sin Temple through acoustic measurements and perceptual ratings of soundscape and smellscape across 197 locations within and around the site. Additionally, semi-structured interviews were conducted with visitors (N = 54, 15,015 words of transcript), which were analysed using content analysis and natural language processing. The results indicate that elevated noise levels mainly arise from human voices and pipe music within the temple compound, as well as traffic noise in the surrounding area. The smell of incense dominates near the temple altars, whereas natural, grassy odours prevail in the adjacent park. Interview responses confirm that incense burning constitutes a traditional religious practice forming a distinctive olfactory marker for Chinese temples, but it is also perceived as having adverse health implications. This study contributes to the growing body of sensory heritage research, underscoring the importance of both soundscape and smellscape in fostering culturally inclusive, vibrant, and sustainable urban environments. Drawing on data from a three-year longitudinal study of 56 Chinese–Canadian families with early elementary school-aged children, this study explores Chinese immigrant parents’ lived-through emotional experiences of heritage language maintenance (HLM). Informed by Vygotsky’s concept of perezhivanie, thematic analysis of annual interview data reveals the mixed and refracted nature of parental emotions involved in Chinese language preservation and bilingual child-rearing. These emotional experiences were profoundly shaped by the intersection of environmental, personal, and situational factors and were deeply entangled with parents’ perceptions of and attitudes toward their children’s heritage language learning and use at home. The emotional work involved significantly influenced the parents’ language and literacy planning and HLM practices. By foregrounding the emotional dimensions of heritage language education, this study offers important implications for educational stakeholders seeking to support immigrant parents both emotionally and practically in raising bilingual children in the host country. Ting, Tai, Lou, and Ge are types of ancient buildings that represent traditional Chinese architecture and culture. They are primarily constructed using mortise and tenon joints, complemented by brick and stone foundations, showcasing traditional architectural craftsmanship. However, research aimed at conserving, inheriting, and rejuvenating these buildings is limited, despite their status as Provincial Cultural Relic Protection Units of China. Therefore, the aim of this study was to reveal the spatial distribution of Ting, Tai, Lou, and Ge buildings across China, as well as the factors driving differences in their spatial distribution. Tourist experiences and building popularity were also explored. The spatial analysis method (e.g., Standard deviation ellipse and Geographic detector), Word cloud generation, and sentiment analysis, which uses Natural Language Processing techniques to identify subjective emotions in text, were applied to investigated the research issues. The key findings of this study are as follows. The ratio of Ting, Tai, Lou, and Ge buildings in Southeast China to that in Northwest China divided by the “Heihe–Tengchong” Line, an important demographic boundary in China with the ratio of permanent residents in the two areas remaining stable at 94:6, was 94.6:5.4. Geographic detector analysis revealed that six of the seven natural and socioeconomic factors (topography, waterways, roads, railways, population, and carbon dioxide emissions) had a significant influence on the spatial heterogeneity of these cultural heritage buildings in China, with socioeconomic factors, particularly population, having a greater influence on building spatial distributions. All seven factors (including the normalized difference vegetation index, an indicator used to assess vegetation health and coverage) were significant in Southeast China, whereas all factors were non-significant in Northwest China, which may be explained by the small number of buildings in the latter region. The average rating scores and heat scores for Ting, Tai, Lou, and Ge buildings were 4.35 (out of 5) and 3 (out of 10), respectively, reflecting an imbalance between service quality and popularity. According to the percentages of positive and negative reviews, Lou buildings have much better tourism services than other buildings, indicating a need to improve services to attract more tourists to Ting, Tai, and Ge buildings. Four main types of words were used with high frequency in the tourism reviews collected form Ctrip, a popular online travel platform in China: (1) historical stories; (2) tourism; (3) culture; and (4) cities/provinces. Ting and Tai buildings showed similar word clouds, as did Lou and Ge buildings, with only the former including historical stories. Conversely, landmark was a high-frequency word only in the reviews of Lou and Ge buildings. Specific suggestions were proposed based on the above findings to promote tourism and revive ancient Chinese architecture. Full article

Learning a language means both mastering the grammatical structures and using contextually appropriate language, or developing sociolinguistic competence, which has been examined by measuring the native-like patterns of sociolinguistic variables. This study investigates subject personal pronoun expression (SPE) variation in Mandarin by young adult and child heritage language learners (or Chinese Heritage Language, CHL) and explores the development of sociolinguistic competence. With data collected from 15 young adults and 27 children, regression analyses show that internal linguistic constraints, psychophysiological constraints, and social constraints all significantly affect SPE variation in CHL. Overall, CHL children used fewer subject pronouns than young adults. The use of pronouns in both child language and young adult speech is constrained by similar factors. However, the difference in SPE patterns between the two groups was not statistically significant. This suggests that children may have already established some adult-like variation patterns, but these are not further developed until early adulthood. By exploring the development of sociolinguistic competence, this research contributes to the current understanding of how sociolinguistic variables are acquired and employed in heritage language at different developmental stages. PCcGE: Personalized Chinese Couplet Generation and Evaluation Framework Based on Large Language Models

Couplets, consisting of a pair of clauses, are an important form of Chinese intangible cultural heritage, playing a significant role in the education and transmission of traditional Chinese culture. By engaging in couplet creation, students can enhance their Chinese comprehension and expression skills, literary creativity, and cultural identity. Personalized Chinese couplet (PCc) generation entails creating paired clauses that meet specific requirements while adhering to certain linguistic rules (e.g., morphological and syntactical symmetry). However, generating PCcs and evaluating the results is a challenging task that requires both cultural context and language understanding. Large Language Models (LLMs) have powerful learning and language comprehension abilities, providing new possibilities for addressing the challenges. In this study, we propose a framework for generating and evaluating PCcs using LLMs. First, we construct a couplet database, then use a retrieval method and design a specific prompt to provide a pair of clauses as references to guide the LLM following the rules of couplet style. Second, we construct a custom PCc generation dataset to train the base model, improving its ability for this task. Finally, we introduce a debate method based on LLMs to evaluate the quality of the generated couplets. By simulating adversarial human debate processes, it obtains more comprehensive and nuanced reference data for evaluation purposes. The experimental results show that our approach effectively generates and evaluates couplets. Reduced creation difficulty promotes couplet education and the preservation of Chinese intangible cultural heritage. Positive feedback from participants indicates that our framework can enhance user engagement, offer a positive PCc creation experience, and contribute to the education and transmission of couplet culture.
