Background/Objectives: This ecological study aimed to investigate changes in the time-varying reproduction number (Rt) of SARS-CoV-2 across six regions of Massachusetts from 2020 to 2022 and to evaluate the impact of various nonpharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) implemented in 2020 by examining associated changes in the Rt. Methods: COVID-19 incident case data from the Johns Hopkins University database were adjusted for reporting delays using deconvolution and for underreporting via a Poisson-distributed multiplier of 4. Negative and zero counts were corrected using imputation. Rt was estimated using R package EpiEstim (Version 2.2-4) with a 7-day sliding window from 2020 to 2022 and with non-overlapping time windows between policy changes in 2020. Results: From 2020 to 2022, Massachusetts experienced five COVID-19 surges, linked to the wild-type strain and emerging variants, with Rt exceeding 1 during each wave and stabilizing at or dropping below 1 during low-incidence phases. School closure and gathering restrictions, the first major intervention, were associated with a 14.7% statewide reduction in Rt (95% credible interval (CrI): −23.6%, −5.6%), with greater reductions in high-density areas such as Boston (−16.9%; 95% CrI: −26.9%, −7.5%). No statistically significant changes in Rt were found to be associated with other NPIs in 2020, including the mask mandate, reopening phases, travel restrictions and quarantine requirements, and curfews. Conclusions: Our findings highlight the different NPIs’ varying impacts on COVID-19 transmission dynamics across regions in Massachusetts in 2020 and underscore the importance of early interventions for future pandemic preparedness. In recent years, China has made strong national commitments to waste reduction and circular economy, including the implementation of mandatory municipal solid waste separation policies and the rollout of zero-waste city initiatives. These efforts represent a strategic shift toward systemic environmental governance. However, the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020—and the subsequent implementation of the country’s stringent zero-COVID policy—led to an abrupt disruption of these programs. Under this policy, strict lockdowns, quarantine of both confirmed and suspected cases, and city-wide containment became top priorities, sidelining environmental initiatives such as waste separation and sustainable waste infrastructure development. This study investigates how Chinese residents’ motivations for waste separation evolved across three key phases: pre-pandemic, during the zero-COVID enforcement period, and post-pandemic recovery. Grounded in the Theory of Planned Behavior and pro-environmental behavior theory, we developed an extended model incorporating pandemic-related social, psychological, and policy variables. Based on 526 valid questionnaire responses collected in late 2023 in Shanghai, we conducted structural equation modeling and repeated-measures analysis. Findings reveal a significant shift from externally driven compliance—reliant on governmental enforcement and service provision—to internally motivated behavior based on environmental values and personal efficacy. This transition was most evident after the pandemic, suggesting the potential for sustained pro-environmental habits despite weakened policy enforcement. Our findings underscore the importance of strengthening internal drivers in environmental governance, especially under conditions where policy continuity is vulnerable to systemic shocks such as public health emergencies. Background: The COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted the mental health and well-being of healthcare professionals worldwide. This study investigated the association between mental health factors, burnout syndrome, quality of life, and insomnia symptoms in healthcare professionals during the COVID-19 pandemic in Montenegro. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted between July and October 2021 among 299 healthcare professionals at the Clinical Center of Montenegro. Participants completed standardized questionnaires, including the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI-HSS), Athens Insomnia Scale (AIS), depression, anxiety, and stress scale (DASS-21), and EQ-5D health-related quality of life questionnaire. Results: Insomnia was reported in 65.0% of female and 35.0% of male participants, with a mean age of 38.57 ± 11.57 years. Insomnia symptoms were more common among those reporting alcohol consumption (p = 0.007), smoking (p = 0.006), and sedative use (p = 0.038). A higher workload (p = 0.017), previous COVID-19 infection (p = 0.001), and quarantine (p = 0.008) were linked to insomnia. Healthcare professionals with insomnia reported lower quality of life across all EQ-5D dimensions (p < 0.001) and higher levels of stress, anxiety, and depression (p < 0.001). Burnout was significantly associated with emotional exhaustion (p < 0.001), while depersonalization and personal achievement showed no significant differences. Conclusions: This study highlights a significant relationship between burnout, mental health issues, and insomnia during the COVID-19 pandemic. Addressing these factors through targeted interventions and workplace policies is essential for improving healthcare professionals’ well-being and ensuring the healthcare system’s sustainability. Understanding the effectiveness of different quarantine strategies is crucial for controlling the spread of COVID-19, particularly in regions with limited data. This study presents a SCIRD-inspired model to simulate the transmission dynamics of COVID-19 in medium-sized cities and their surrounding satellite towns. Unlike previous works that focus primarily on large urban centers or homogeneous populations, our approach incorporates intercity mobility and evaluates the impact of spatially differentiated interventions. By analyzing lockdown strategies implemented during the first year of the pandemic, we demonstrate that short, localized lockdowns are highly effective in reducing virus propagation, while intermittent restrictions balance public health concerns with socioeconomic demands. A key contribution of this study is the validation of the epidemic model using real-world data from the 2021 lockdown that occurred in a medium-sized city, confirming its predictive accuracy and adaptability to different contexts. Additionally, we provide a detailed analysis of how mobility patterns between municipalities influence infection spread, offering a more comprehensive mathematical framework for decision-making. These findings advance the understanding of epidemic control in regions with sparse data and provide evidence-based insights to inform public health policies in similar contexts. Full article

Quarantine policies during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic prolonged time spent at home, leading to an unintended occurrence of sick building syndrome (SBS) symptoms. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of SBS symptoms among residents in Suzhou, China, during the COVID-19 pandemic. A questionnaire survey was conducted online from February to May 2022. A total of 442 adults were included in this study. The prevalence of SBS symptoms was much higher during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the proportions of general, mucosal, and skin symptoms were 59.3%, 45.5% and 49.1%, respectively. The influences of building characteristics, occupant lifestyle, indoor environment and perception of indoor environment were analysed using a multivariate logistic regression model. Neighbourhood pollutant sources, older residences, non-ownership and humidity indicators were significant risk factors for SBS symptoms. Frequent use of air fresheners was significantly associated with general (adjusted odds ratio (AOR): 4.9, 95% confidence interval (CI: 2.4–10.0), mucosal (AOR: 5.3, 95% CI: 2.4–11.5), and skin symptoms (AOR: 4.6, 95% CI: 1.6–13.1), while the use of disinfectants was significantly correlated with skin symptoms (AOR: 4.0, 95% CI: 1.5–10.7). Residents’ perception of an uncomfortable indoor environment was a significant predictor of general (AOR: 2.2, 95% CI: 1.2–4.0) and mucosal symptoms (AOR: 3.1, 95% CI: 1.6–6.0). The use of air cleaners can reduce the prevalence of general symptoms. An important finding of this study is that the psychological impact of staying at home for a long time was associated with general symptoms (AOR: 1.3, 95% CI: 1.1–1.7), which means that attention should also be paid to the mental health of residents during the COVID-19 pandemic. Although the quarantine period has now ended, our results can still serve as a reference for the impact of the indoor environment on the health of people with SBS, especially for those who stay at home for a long time, such as the elderly. Facing the threat of SARS-CoV-2, several countries implemented protective measures to annihilate the waves of the pandemic. Apart from quarantine, social distancing, frequent disinfection, and the use of a face mask, vaccination against COVID-19 soon became available. The measures taken in the workplace to inhibit the spread of the virus were important, as some controversial policies emerged regarding the vaccination status of employees. The “health pass” changed the workplace environment immensely, as in many job sectors vaccination became mandatory. Unvaccinated employees were required to undergo specific COVID-19 tests to access their workplace, while other specialized workers such as health workers were removed from their work altogether. Such measures would be justified if it was certain that vaccinated people cannot transmit the virus, but over the course of years this hypothesis seems to have faded. The main aim of this study is the confirmation (or the non-validation) of this hypothesis and of the specific applied measures through the elaboration and statistical analysis of vaccination data from 35 countries in relation to their daily announced infections over the time frame from the forty-fourth week of 2021 to the fourth week of 2022. This is examined from an occupational safety and health (OSH) perspective (taking into account the three pillars of sustainability) concerning risk management and safety assessment at the workplaces of sustainable engineering systems (SES). The findings imply that this hypothesis is contestable. Therefore, it is doubtful whether workplace segregation measures were socially and economically sustainable. It is deduced that (i) the complete freedom of vaccinated employees was a situation which intensified occupational risk, degraded the safety level at the workplaces of sustainable engineering systems, and increased the OSH risk management difficulties, and, on the other hand, (ii) the financial burden of mandatory unemployment and frequent testing was not justified and economically sustainable for the unvaccinated individuals in the middle of a worldwide economic crisis. From cost and management perspectives, the sudden outbreak of COVID-19 and the subsequent countermeasures adversely affected labor-intensive construction companies owing to the restrictive guidelines. Following a systematic literature review, this study developed a theoretical framework to assess the impacts of COVID-19 and its countermeasures on construction sites. Based on a developed framework reflecting abroad cases, we explored the Republic of Korea (ROK) situation. Questionnaires were utilized to detect this impact, and were then analyzed using the relative importance index. Through interviews with site managers in the ROK, combined with text-mining and network analysis, this study aimed to pinpoint effective countermeasures and validate the framework. Results revealed that despite policy changes, construction sites in the ROK were not seriously affected during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, while foreign investment remained steady owing to robust financial contracts, labor shortages and cooperative challenges hindered productivity. Additionally, beyond telecommuting and inspections, changing hygiene regulations prompted the adoption of smart technologies. Further, site managers requested the optimization of worker management and smart systems with governance, hygiene, and quarantine policies. Although impacts from other countries have been studied, the experiences of industries in the ROK remain unanalyzed. In addition, the existing literature has only examined the economic viability of the construction industry; therefore, this study assessed the impacts and countermeasures of COVID-19 from the perspective of managers using a unified theoretical framework. Background: Studies of aging have suggested that QoL is positively associated with active social contacts and supportive face to face social networks. However, social networks and contacts in later life decrease due to a variety of reasons; the narrowing of social networks contributes to increased social isolation and loneliness and leads to the deterioration of well-being and QoL among adult persons. The goal of this study was to explore the relationship between loneliness feelings and QoL during the COVID-19 quarantine as potentially moderated by group physical activity prior to the COVID-19 pandemic quarantine. Methods: A convenience sample of 99 older adults aged 60 and over was interviewed. Using bootstrapping, we tested the strength and significance of the conditional moderation effect of group physical activity prior to the COVID-19 pandemic quarantine on the relationship between loneliness feelings and QoL during the COVID-19 quarantine. Results: the results demonstrated a direct negative effect between loneliness feelings and QoL during the COVID-19 pandemic and that the relationship was moderated by group physical activity prior to the COVID-19 pandemic quarantine (p = 0.000). Conclusion: the findings indicate that policy makers and professionals working with older adults should seek ways to attract older adults to participate in group physical activity and enjoy its long-term social benefits. The first reported infections from COVID-19 were in 2019 and, since then, an outbreak has spread rapidly to other parts of the world, resulting in many deaths. As a result, governments began to implement border restrictions and quarantine measures, bringing the travel industry to a halt and plunging the global economy into a severe contraction. Many regions chose to coexist with COVID-19 and gradually eased their border restrictions with certain conditions, such as using personal health status certificates, vaccination certificates, etc. Digital certificates are becoming a global trend, and Taiwan has invested in developing related tools. This paper presents a technical evaluation from the government’s point of view. Taiwan uses the European Union (EU) Digital COVID Certificate as a basis to build a digital certificate that can fully meet the residents’ current international business and tourism needs. The government hopes that this digital proof will promote the public’s return to normal life and overcome the inconveniences brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. In the post-pandemic era, finding a way to coexist with the virus while gradually relaxing border and community epidemic-prevention policies without impacting our Taiwan’s medical capacity is a significant challenge. Providing key technological solutions to assist in risk stratification is essential in addressing this issue. Full article

This study examines the response of the BRICS and MSCI emerging stock market indices to the COVID-19 outbreak. For this purpose, this study uses a multifractal detrended fluctuation analysis (MF-DFA) to investigate the market efficiency dynamics of these indices and then ranks them based on their market efficiency. Overall, our results indicate that the returns from all the stock indices exhibit long-range correlations, implying that these markets are not weak-form efficient. Specifically, China showed the highest level of multifractality (i.e., inefficiency), which can be attributed to its highly volatile market structure. Using a subsample analysis, we further explore the impact of COVID-19 on these markets’ efficiency by dividing the dataset into pre- and post-COVID periods. The findings indicate that COVID-19 adversely affected the efficiency of all the indices. Surprisingly, improvement in the Chinese market’s inefficiency was witnessed, which can be attributed to the prompt and effective measures (i.e., timely imposition of health-related measures such as lockdowns and resident quarantines to contain COVID-19 and financial packages designed to curtail the economic meltdown) introduced by the Chinese government. The findings of this study may help investors, policymakers and regulators in refining their financial and policy decisions according to the new efficiency levels of these markets. Full article

This paper aims to empirically analyze the difference in the closure rate of the commercial district according to the industry structure of the commercial district. Theoretically, the larger the number of stores in a commercial district, the greater the positive externality caused by the agglomeration economies in consumption, namely, the external economies of scale. However, the agglomeration economies could occur from comparison shopping or one-stop shopping, depending on the business structure of the commercial district. According to the empirical results of the regression analysis of all 1164 commercial districts in Korea, the more specialized a commercial district is by stores in a specific industry, the lower the closure rate of that commercial district. This means that the agglomeration economies in consumption are driven by comparison shopping rather than by one-stop shopping and implies that it is necessary to introduce incentives that allow stores in the same industry to cluster together in terms of policy. Meanwhile, if the closure is limited to a specific industry, it will cause an endogeneity problem since it affects the industry structure of the commercial district. Considering this, as a result of additional estimation by 2SLS and GMM using instrumental variables, the error in estimation due to the endogeneity problem was not large, confirming that COVID-19 corresponds to an overall external shock that is not limited to a specific industry. In addition, this paper presents diagnostic indicators for commercial districts to measure the impact of COVID-19. Through this, it will be possible to alleviate conflicts between social classes over compensation or subsidies for sanctions for quarantine. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first time to use all commercial districts in Korea for a research in evaluating the impact of COVID-19, and empirical results on agglomeration economies focusing on the consumption side are limited. In this article, we analyze a second-order stochastic SEIR epidemic model with latent infectious and susceptible populations isolated at home. Firstly, by putting forward a novel inequality, we provide a criterion for the presence of an ergodic stationary distribution of the model. Secondly, we establish sufficient conditions for extinction. Thirdly, by solving the corresponding Fokker–Plank equation, we derive the probability density function around the quasi-endemic equilibrium of the stochastic model. Finally, by using the epidemic data of the corresponding deterministic model, two numerical tests are presented to illustrate the validity of the theoretical results. Our conclusions demonstrate that nations should persevere in their quarantine policies to curb viral transmission when the COVID-19 pandemic proceeds to spread internationally. Full article

The Impact of Japan’s Soft Lockdown on Depressive Symptoms among Community-Dwelling Older Adults

This study investigated the impact of stay-at-home orders on depressive symptoms among community-dwelling older adults during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic. A questionnaire was administered to older adults living in Ayase City, Kanagawa Prefecture, in July 2020, after the Japanese government declared its first COVID-19 state of emergency and stay-at-home order. In a sample of 1056 people, 69.1% were stay-at-home, and 30.9% were not. Those in the first group were more likely to be women, young-old, or non-workers. In addition, the patients tended to have more diseases. Of the participants, 39.3% had depressive symptoms and 60.7% did not. Multivariate analysis revealed that depressive symptoms were associated with increased frequency of being alone during the daytime (OR = 1.27; 95% CI = 1.07, 1.51), less face-to-face contact with friends or acquaintances (OR = 0.78; 95% CI = 0.65, 0.94), increased contact with friends or acquaintances through email/LINE app (OR = 1.29; 95% CI = 1.03, 1.60), and refraining from going out (OR = 1.54; 95% CI = 1.12, 2.09). These results suggest that quarantine measures related to soft lockdowns may aggravate the mental health of community-dwelling older adults. Meeting the mental health needs of perinatal women during the COVID-19 pandemic is a serious concern. This scoping review looks at how to prevent, mitigate or treat the mental health problems faced by women during a pandemic, and lays out suggestions for further research. Interventions for women with pre-existing mental health problems or health problems that develop during the perinatal period are included. The literature in English published in 2020–2021 is explored. Hand searches were conducted in PubMed and PsychINFO using the terms COVID-19, perinatal mental health and review. A total of 13 systematic and scoping reviews and meta-analyses were included. This scoping review shows that every woman should be assessed for mental health issues at every stage of her pregnancy and postpartum, with particular attention to women with a history of mental health problems. In the COVID-19 era, efforts should be focused on reducing the magnitude of stress and a perceived sense of lack of control experienced by perinatal women. Helpful instructions for women with perinatal mental health problems include mindfulness, distress tolerance skills, relaxation exercises, and interpersonal relationship building skills. Further longitudinal multicenter cohort studies could help improve the current knowledge. Promoting perinatal resilience and fostering positive coping skills, mitigating perinatal mental health problems, screening all prenatal and postpartum women for affective disorders, and using telehealth services appear to be indispensable resources. In future, governments and research agencies will need to pay greater attention to the trade-offs of reducing the spread of the virus through lockdowns, physical distancing, and quarantine measures and developing policies to mitigate the mental health impact on perinatal women. This study analyzed major issues related to diabetes during the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic by using topic modeling analysis of online news articles provided by BIGKind dating from 20 January 2020, the onset of the COVID-19 outbreak in Korea, to 17 April 2022, the lifting of the social distancing restrictions. We selected 226 articles and conducted topic modeling analysis to identify the main agenda of news related to patients with diabetes in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic; both latent Dirichlet allocation and visualization were conducted by generating keywords extracted from news text as a matrix using Python 3.0. Four main topics were extracted from the news articles related to “COVID-19” and “diabetes” during the COVID-19 pandemic, including “COVID-19 high-risk group,” “health management through digital healthcare,” “risk of metabolic disease related to quarantine policy,” and “child and adolescent obesity and diabetes.” This study is significant because it uses big data related to diabetes that was reported in the mass media during the new epidemic to identify problems in the health management of patients with diabetes during a new epidemic and discuss areas that should be considered for future interventions.
