Lithium Slag as a Supplementary Cementitious Material for Sustainable Concrete: A Review

The global cement industry remains a significant contributor to carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, prompting substantial research efforts toward sustainable construction materials. Lithium slag (LS), a by-product of lithium extraction, has attracted attention as a supplementary cementitious material (SCM). This review synthesizes experimental findings on LS replacement levels, fresh-state behavior, mechanical performance (compressive, tensile, and flexural strengths), time-dependent deformation (shrinkage and creep), and durability (sulfate, acid, abrasion, and thermal) of LS-modified concretes. Statistical analysis identifies an optimal LS dosage of 20–30% (average 24%) for maximizing compressive strength and long-term durability, with 40% as a practical upper limit for tensile and flexural performance. Fresh-state tests show that workability losses at high LS content can be mitigated via superplasticizers. Drying shrinkage and creep strains decrease in a dose-dependent manner with up to 30% LS. High-volume (40%) LS blends achieve up to an 18% gain in 180-day compressive strength and >30% reduction in permeability metrics. Under elevated temperatures, 20% LS mixes retain up to 50% more residual strength than controls. In advanced systems—autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC), one-part geopolymers, and recycled aggregate composites—LS further enhances both microstructural densification and durability. In particular, LS emerges as a versatile SCM that optimizes mechanical and durability performance, supports material circularity, and reduces the carbon footprint. Full article

This study reports the synthesis and evaluation of iron molybdate (Fe2(MoO4)3) and iron tungstate (FeWO4) as photocatalysts for the degradation of a real industrial effluent from aluminum anodizing processes under visible light irradiation. The oxides were synthesized via a co-precipitation method in an aqueous medium, followed by microwave-assisted hydrothermal treatment. Structural and morphological characterizations were performed using X-ray diffraction, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, ultraviolet–visible (UV–vis), and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopies. The effluent was characterized by means of ionic chromatography, total organic carbon (TOC) analysis, physicochemical parameters (pH and conductivity), and UV–vis spectroscopy. Both materials exhibited well-crystallized structures with distinct morphologies: Fe2(MoO4)3 presented well-defined exposed (001) and (110) surfaces, while FeWO4 showed a highly porous, fluffy texture with irregularly shaped particles. In addition to morphology, both materials exhibited narrow bandgaps—2.11 eV for Fe2(MoO4)3 and 2.03 eV for FeWO4. PL analysis revealed deep defects in Fe2(MoO4)3 and shallow defects in FeWO4, which can influence the generation and lifetime of reactive oxygen species. These combined structural, electronic, and morphological features significantly affected their photocatalytic performance. TOC measurements revealed degradation efficiencies of 32.2% for Fe2(MoO4)3 and 45.3% for FeWO4 after 120 min of irradiation. The results highlight the critical role of morphology, optical properties, and defect structures in governing photocatalytic activity and reinforce the potential of these simple iron-based oxides for real wastewater treatment applications. A brick kiln was experimentally studied to measure the transient temperature of hot gases and the compressive strength of the bricks, using pine wood as fuel, in order to evaluate the thermal performance of the actual system. In addition, a transient combustion model based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was used to simulate the combustion of natural gas in the brick kiln as a hypothetical case, with the aim of investigating the potential benefits of fuel switching. The theoretical stoichiometric combustion of both pine wood and natural gas was employed to compare the mole fractions and the adiabatic flame temperature. Also, the transient hot gas temperature obtained from the experimental wood-fired kiln were compared with those from the simulated natural gas-fired kiln. Furthermore, numerical simulations were carried out to obtain the transient hot gas temperature and NOx emissions under stoichiometric, fuel-rich, and excess air conditions. The results of CO2 mole fractions from stoichiometric combustion demonstrate that natural gas may represent a cleaner alternative for use in brick kilns, due to a 44.08% reduction in emissions. Contour plots of transient hot gases temperature, velocity, and CO2 emission inside the kiln are presented. Moreover, the time-dependent emissions of CO2, H2O, and CO at the kiln outlet are shown. It can be concluded that the presence of CO mole fractions at the kiln outlet suggests that the transient combustion process could be further improved. The low firing efficiency of bricks and the thermal efficiency obtained are attributed to uneven temperatures distributions inside the kiln. Moreover, hot gas temperature and NOx emissions were found to be higher under stoichiometric conditions than under fuel-rich or excess of air conditions. Therefore, this work could be useful for improving the thermal–hydraulic and emissions performance of brick kilns, as well as for future kiln design improvements. Full article

This study uses life cycle analysis (LCA) to evaluate the environmental impacts of co-firing bituminous coal with agricultural biomass waste, such as coconut and rice husks, emphasising circular economy principles. Seven experimental scenarios with different coal-to-biomass ratios were designed, ranging from pure coal to pure biomass. The results show that Scenario B (100% rice husk) achieved the best overall environmental performance, with the lowest global warming potential (300 kg CO2 equivalent), eutrophication potential (4.742 kg PO4 equivalent), and smog formation potential (0.012 kg C2H4 equivalent). Additionally, Scenario F (15% biomass mix) recorded the lowest acidification potential (57.39 kg SO2 eq), indicating that even partial substitution can yield significant environmental benefits. In contrast, Scenario C (100% coal) exhibited the highest acidification (164.08 kg SO2 eq) and eutrophication (8.82 kg PO4 eq) potential. Overall, the results demonstrate that co-firing biomass waste significantly reduces pollutant emissions compared to burning coal alone. This study highlights the effectiveness of biomass waste co-firing in mitigating environmental impacts, promoting resource recovery, and supporting a sustainable energy transition within a circular economy framework. Carbon monoxide (CO) is a major toxic gas emitted from vehicle exhaust, industrial processes, and incomplete fuel combustion, posing serious environmental and health risks. Catalytic oxidation of CO into less harmful CO2 is an effective strategy to reduce these emissions. In this study, we investigated the catalytic performance of platinum (Pt) single atoms doped on C3N monolayers with various vacancy defects, including single carbon (CV) and nitrogen (NV) vacancies, using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Our results demonstrate that Pt@NV-C3N exhibited the most favorable catalytic properties, with the highest O2 adsorption energy (−3.07 eV). This performance significantly outperforms Pt atoms doped at other vacancies. It can be attributed to the strong binding between Pt and nitrogen vacancies, which contributes to its excellent resistance to Pt aggregation. CO oxidation on Pt@NV-C3N proceeds via the Eley–Rideal (ER2) mechanism with a low activation barrier of 0.41 eV for the rate-determining step, indicating high catalytic efficiency at low temperatures. These findings suggest that Pt@NV-C3N is a promising candidate for CO oxidation, contributing to developing cost-effective and environmentally sustainable catalysts. The strong binding of Pt atoms to the nitrogen vacancies prevents aggregation, ensuring the stability and durability of the catalyst. The kinetic modeling further revealed that the ER2 mechanism offers the highest reaction rate constants over a wide temperature range (273–700 K). The low activation energy barrier also facilitates CO oxidation at lower temperatures, addressing critical challenges in automotive and industrial pollution control. This study provides valuable theoretical insights for designing advanced single-atom catalysts for environmental remediation applications. Full article

This research develops a dual physics-based machine learning system to forecast fuel consumption and CO2 emissions for a 100 m oil tanker across six operational scenarios: Original, Paint, Advanced Propeller, Fin, Bulbous Bow, and Combined. The combination of hydrodynamic calculations with Monte Carlo simulations provides a solid foundation for training machine learning models, particularly in cases where dataset restrictions are present. The XGBoost model demonstrated superior performance compared to Support Vector Regression, Gaussian Process Regression, Random Forest, and Shallow Neural Network models, achieving near-zero prediction errors that closely matched physics-based calculations. The physics-based analysis demonstrated that the Combined scenario, which combines hull coatings with bulbous bow modifications, produced the largest fuel consumption reduction (5.37% at 15 knots), followed by the Advanced Propeller scenario. The results demonstrate that user inputs (e.g., engine power: 870 kW, speed: 12.7 knots) match the Advanced Propeller scenario, followed by Paint, which indicates that advanced propellers or hull coatings would optimize efficiency. The obtained insights help ship operators modify their operational parameters and designers select essential modifications for sustainable operations. The model maintains its strength at low speeds, where fuel consumption is minimal, making it applicable to other oil tankers. The hybrid approach provides a new tool for maritime efficiency analysis, yielding interpretable results that support International Maritime Organization objectives, despite starting with a limited dataset. The model requires additional research to enhance its predictive accuracy using larger datasets and real-time data collection, which will aid in achieving global environmental stewardship. Integrated GBR–NSGA-II Optimization Framework for Sustainable Utilization of Steel Slag in Road Base Layers

This study proposes an integrated, machine learning-based multi-objective optimization framework to evaluate and optimize the utilization of steel slag in road base layers, simultaneously addressing economic costs and environmental impacts. A comprehensive dataset of 482 scenarios was engineered based on literature-informed parameters, encompassing transport distance, processing energy intensity, initial moisture content, gradation adjustments, and regional electricity emission factors. Four advanced tree-based ensemble regression algorithms—Random Forest Regressor (RFR), Extremely Randomized Trees (ERTs), Gradient Boosted Regressor (GBR), and Extreme Gradient Boosting Regressor (XGBR)—were rigorously evaluated. Among these, GBR demonstrated superior predictive performance (R2 > 0.95, RMSE < 7.5), effectively capturing complex nonlinear interactions inherent in slag processing and logistics operations. Feature importance analysis via SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) provided interpretative insights, highlighting transport distance and energy intensity as dominant factors affecting unit cost, while moisture content and grid emission factor predominantly influenced CO2 emissions. Subsequently, the Gradient Boosted Regressor model was integrated into a Non-Dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II (NSGA-II) framework to explore optimal trade-offs between cost and emissions. The resulting Pareto front revealed a diverse solution space, with significant nonlinear trade-offs between economic efficiency and environmental performance, clearly identifying strategic inflection points. To facilitate actionable decision-making, the Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) method was applied, identifying an optimal balanced solution characterized by a transport distance of 47 km, energy intensity of 1.21 kWh/ton, moisture content of 6.2%, moderate gradation adjustment, and a grid CO2 factor of 0.47 kg CO2/kWh. This scenario offered a substantial reduction (45%) in CO2 emissions relative to cost-minimized solutions, with a moderate increase (33%) in total cost, presenting a realistic and balanced pathway for sustainable infrastructure practices. Overall, this study introduces a robust, scalable, and interpretable optimization framework, providing valuable methodological advancements for sustainable decision making in infrastructure planning and circular economy initiatives. Urban metabolism frameworks offer insight into flows of energy, materials, and services in cities, yet tree species selection is seldom treated as a metabolic indicator. In Amman, Jordan, we integrate spatial metabolic metrics to critique monocultural greening policies and demonstrate how species choices forecast long-term urban metabolic performance. Using ENVI-met 5.61 simulations, we compare Melia azedarach, Olea europaea, and Ceratonia siliqua, mainly assessing urban flow related elements like air temperature reduction, CO2 sequestration, and evapotranspiration alongside rooting depth, isoprene emissions, and biodiversity support. Melia delivers rapid cooling but shows other negatives like a low biodiversity value; Olea offers average cooling and sequestration but has allergenic pollen issues in people as a flow; Ceratonia provides scalable cooling, increased carbon uptake, and has a high ecological value. We propose a metabolic reframing of green infrastructure planning to choose urban species, guided by system feedback rather than aesthetics, to ensure long-term resilience in arid urban climates. The integration of autonomous vehicles (AVs) into urban transportation systems has significant potential to enhance traffic efficiency and reduce environmental impacts. This study evaluates the impact of different AV penetration scenarios (0%, 10%, 30%, 50%) on traffic performance and carbon emissions along Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Road in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Using microscopic simulation (SUMO) based on real-world datasets, we assess key performance indicators such as travel time, stop frequency, speed, and CO2 emissions. Results indicate notable improvements with increasing AV deployment, including up to 25.5% reduced travel time and 14.6% lower emissions at 50% AV penetration. Coordinated AV behavior was approximated using adjusted simulation parameters and Python-based APIs, effectively modeling vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V), vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I), and vehicle-to-network (V2N) communications. These findings highlight the benefits of harmonized AV–human vehicle interactions, providing a scalable and data-driven framework applicable to smart urban mobility planning. Full article

Case Study on Emissions Abatement Strategies for Aging Cruise Vessels: Environmental and Economic Comparison of Scrubbers and Low-Sulphur Fuels

The maritime sector is undergoing rapid transformation, driven by increasingly stringent international regulations targeting air pollution. While newly built vessels integrate advanced technologies for compliance, the global fleet averages 21.8 years of age and must meet emission requirements through retrofitting or operational changes. This study evaluates, at environmental and economic levels, two key sulphur abatement strategies for a 1998-built cruise vessel nearing the end of its service life: (i) the installation of open-loop scrubbers with fuel enhancement devices, and (ii) a switch to marine diesel oil as main fuel. The analysis was based on real operational data from a cruise vessel. For the environmental assessment, a Tier III hybrid emissions model was used. The results show that scrubbers reduce SOx emissions by approximately 97% but increase fuel consumption by 3.6%, raising both CO2 and NOx emissions, while particulate matter decreases by only 6.7%. In contrast, switching to MDO achieves over 99% SOx reduction, an 89% drop in particulate matter, and a nearly 5% reduction in CO2 emissions. At an economic level, it was found that, despite a CAPEX of nearly USD 1.9 million, scrubber installation provides an average annual net saving exceeding USD 8.2 million. From the deterministic and probabilistic analyses performed, including Monte Carlo simulations under various fuel price correlation scenarios, scrubber installation consistently shows high profitability, with NPVs surpassing USD 70 million and payback periods under four months. Optimizing Energy Performance of Phase-Change Material-Enhanced Building Envelopes Through Novel Performance Indicators

Over recent decades, phase-change materials (PCMs) have gained prominence as latent-heat thermal energy storage systems in building envelopes because of their high energy density. However, only PCMs that complete a full daily charge–discharge cycle can deliver meaningful energy and carbon-emission savings. This simulation study introduces a methodology that simultaneously optimizes PCM integration for storage efficiency, indoor thermal comfort, and energy savings. Two new indicators are proposed: overall storage efficiency (ECn), which consolidates heating and cooling-efficiency ratios into a single value, and the performance factor (PF), which quantifies the PCM’s effectiveness in maintaining thermal comfort. Using EnergyPlus v8.9 coupled with DesignBuilder, a residential ASHRAE 90.1 mid-rise apartment was modeled in six warm-temperate (Cfb) European cities for the summer period from June 1 to August 31. Four paraffin PCMs (RT-22/25/28/31 HC, 20 mm thickness) were tested under natural and controlled ventilation strategies, with windows opening 50% when outdoor air was at least 2 °C cooler than indoors. Simulation outputs were validated against experimental cubicle data, yielding a mean absolute indoor temperature error ≤ 4.5%, well within the ±5% tolerance commonly accepted for building thermal simulations. The optimum configuration—RT-25 HC with temperature-controlled ventilation—achieved PF = 1.0 (100% comfort compliance) in all six cities and delivered summer cooling-energy savings of up to 3376 kWh in Paris, the highest among the locations studied. Carbon-emission reductions reached 2254 kg CO2-e year−1, and static payback periods remained below the assumed 50-year building life at a per kg PCM cost of USD 1. The ECn–PF framework, therefore, provides a transparent basis for selecting cost-effective, energy-efficient, and low-carbon PCM solutions in warm-temperate buildings. Full article

Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions due to human activities are responsible for approximately 80% of the drivers of global warming, resulting in a 1.1 °C increase above pre-industrial temperatures. This study quantified the CO2 assimilation and productivity of the brown macroalgae Lessonia spicata in the central Pacific coast of Chile, across seasonal and daily cycles, under different environmental stressors, such as temperature and solar irradiance. Measurements were performed using an infra-red gas analysis (IRGA) instrument which had a chamber allowing for precise quantification of CO2 concentrations; additional photophysiological and biochemical responses were also measured. CO2 assimilation, along with the productivity and biosynthesis of proteins and lipids, increased during the spring, coinciding with moderate temperatures (~14 °C) and high photosynthetically active radiation (PAR). Furthermore, the increased production of photoprotective and antioxidant compounds, including phenolic compounds, and carotenoids, along with the enhancement of non-photochemical quenching (NPQ), contribute to the effective photoacclimation strategies of L. spicata. Principal component analysis (PCA) revealed seasonal associations between productivity, reactive oxygen species (ROSs), and biochemical indicators, particularly during the spring and summer. These associations, further supported by Pearson correlation analyses, suggest a high but seasonally constrained photoacclimation capacity. In contrast, the reduced productivity and photoprotection observed in the summer suggest increased physiological vulnerability to heat and light stress. Overall, our findings position L. spicata as a promising nature-based solution for climate change mitigation. Full article

Influence of Nanosilica and PVA Fibers on the Mechanical and Deformation Behavior of Engineered Cementitious Composites

This paper evaluates the synergistic effect of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fibers and nanosilica (nS) on the mechanical behavior and deformation properties of engineered cementitious composites (ECCs). ECCs have gained a reputation for high ductility, crack control, and strain-hardening behavior. Nevertheless, the next step is to improve their performance even more through nano-modification and fine-tuning of fiber dosage—one of the major research directions. In the experiment, six types of ECC mixtures were made by maintaining constant PVA fiber content (0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0%), while the nanosilica contents were varied (0, 1, 2, 3, and 5%). Stress–strain tests carried out in the form of compression, together with unrestrained shrinkage measurement, were conducted to test strength, strain capacity, and resistance to deformation, which was highest at 80 MPa, recorded in the concrete with 2% nS and 0.5% PVA. On the other hand, the mixture of 1.5% PVA and 3% nS had the highest strain result of 2750 µm/m, which indicates higher ductility. This is seen to be influenced by refined microstructures, improved fiber dispersion, and better fiber–matrix interfacial bonding through nS. In addition to these mechanical modifications, the use of nanosilica, obtained from industrial byproducts, provided the possibility to partially replace Portland cement, resulting in a decrease in the amount of CO2 emissions. In addition, the enhanced crack resistance implies higher durability and reduced long-term maintenance. Such results demonstrate that optimized ECC compositions, including nS and PVA, offer high performance in terms of strength and flexibility as well as contribute to the sustainability goals—features that will define future eco-efficient infrastructure. This study presents a novel approach to address these challenges by introducing automobile platinum honeycomb catalysts into biomass combustion systems. The study employed a dual methodology, combining experimental investigations and a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) case study, to comprehensively evaluate the catalyst’s performance and environmental impacts. The catalyst’s ability to facilitate combustion without open flame formation and its operational efficiency throughout combustion phases position it as a promising avenue for reducing gaseous and particulate matter emissions. The LCA considers multiple impact categories, employing the ReCiPe 2008 Hierarchist midpoint and endpoint perspective to assess environmental effects. The experimental results show that the catalyst effectively reduced CO, SO2, and particulate emissions. Temperatures below 400 °C diminished the catalyst’s performance. The catalyst achieved a 100% CO conversion rate at specific temperatures of 427.4–490.3 °C. The findings highlight the potential for a 34% reduction in environmental impacts when replacing conventional rice husk combustion with the catalyst-integrated system. Notably, the study emphasizes the significance of sustainable catalyst manufacturing processes and cleaner electricity sources in maximizing environmental benefits. In conclusion, the integration of platinum honeycomb catalysts into biomass combustion systems, exemplified by rice husk combustion, emerges as a promising strategy for achieving more sustainable and environmentally friendly bioenergy production. In the era of “carbon dioxide peaking and carbon neutrality”, low-carbon development of road traffic and transportation has now become a rigid demand in China. Considering the fact that socioeconomic and demographic characteristics vary significantly across Chinese cities, proper city-level transportation development strategies should be established. Using detailed data from cities at prefecture level and above in China, this study investigates the spatially heterogeneous effects of various factors on road traffic CO2 emissions. Another theoretical issue is concerned with the analytic method for zonal CO2 emission modeling. We combine the concepts of geographically weighted regression (GWR) and machine learning for nonparametric regression, proposing a modified random forest (RF) algorithm, named “geographically weighted random forest” (GWRF). Our empirical analysis indicates that, when an appropriate weight parameter is applied, GWRF is able to achieve significantly superior performance compared to both the traditional RF and GWR methods. Moreover, the influences of various explanatory variables on CO2 emissions differ across cities. These findings suggest that low-carbon transportation strategies should be customized to reflect regional heterogeneity, rather than relying on a unified national policy. Full article
